Rockfall in limestone mines is a common geohazard in the Changdu area of eastern Tibet and one of the leading geo-safety issues that mining enterprises and railway projects are faced with. We carried out a detailed geohazard survey using the methods of general geology, structural geology, and geohazard geology. We found the rockfall development pattern, characterized rock mass structural planes, discussed the collapse's mechanism, and established its failure mode. The results show that rockfall sites in the study area show a linear spreading along the fold and thrust zone. Five groups of steep-dip structural planes have developed in the rock body, including the longitudinal joint (S1), the transverse joint (S2), the X-type conjugate shear joints (S3 and S4), and the interlayer shear joint (S5). Paired with regional folds and hedging faults, these structural planes cut the rock mass into broken blocks. The collapses are the product of coupled internal and external dynamic geological processes. The sedimentary foundation of the rockfalls in the Qamdo area is the limestone from the upper Triassic Bolila Formation (T3b) formed in the intracontinental rift basin. The strongly folded orogeny triggered by the Cenozoic (Cz) India-Eurasia collision laid down the tectonic framework in the region, which is the essential condition for rockfall development. The strong Neotectonic movement since the Quaternary (Q), frequent hot and humid climate alternations with abundant rainfall since the Late Pleistocene (Q3), everyday human activities, and other internal and external dynamic coupling effects are the main triggering factors of the rockfall disaster. Three failure modes of rockfall are identified, namely toppling, falling, and sliding. The research results have specific guiding significance for rockfall prevention and control in the karst area and the railway construction in the Sichuan-Tibet area.

To better understand the influence of different levels of two-way stress differences on the development of damage in Anchang diametral laminar shale in the northern Qianbei area, a numerical model of laminar shale with a representative fine-scale structure was established by using RFPA3D-CT. A triaxial compression test was conducted; a three-dimensional mesoscale fracture box dimension algorithm based on digital images was generated by using MATLAB R2020b; and the fractal characteristics were quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that under the influence of the horizontal stress ratio and two-way stress, the greater the two-way stress is, the more notable the plastic characteristics of specimen damage are, and the higher the residual strength is. The specimens with lower two-way stress exhibited obvious brittle damage characteristics. The difficulty degree of complex fracture network formation increased with the increase in the horizontal tension ratio, and the degree of increase in the fracture network complexity gradually decreased. At a horizontal stress ratio of 1.25, the fractal dimension was the highest, which indicates that the cracks were the most pronounced. Fracture formation after specimen damage was the most common phenomenon. Under the condition of a lower horizontal stress ratio, a large number of fracture structures could be generated in shale specimens after damage, promoting the expansion of natural fractures. The Makeng iron deposit in southwest Fujian is a significant iron polymetallic deposit containing various types of iron ore, including garnet magnetite, diopside magnetite, and quartz magnetite. The metallogenetic type of the deposit has been a subject of debate, particularly in relation to the genesis of magnetite and the source of iron. In situ microanalysis of trace elements in magnetite from different ores shows relatively low levels of V, Ti, Cu, and Zn, with higher concentrations of Ca and Si, indicating the characteristics of a skarn type deposit. The δ57Fe values of the magnetite range from −0.091‰ to 0.317‰. Combining these data, whole-rock iron isotope analyses, including Juzhou and Dayang granites, diabase, and the Lower Carboniferous Lindi Formation sandstone, suggest that Fe in the magnetite primarily originates from granitic pluton, with potential contributions from diabase and the Lower Carboniferous Lindi Formation sandstone. Combined with field work, these results indicate that Makeng iron deposit is a skarn-type magnetite deposit associated with Yanshanian granitic intrusions. Therefore, the initial ore-forming fluid is postulated to be a high-temperature magmatic hydrothermal fluid with high oxygen fugacity. This fluid infiltrates spaces such as interlayer fracture zones between the Upper Carboniferous Jingshe Formation–Middle Permian Qixia Formation carbonate rocks and the Lower Carboniferous Lindi Formation sandstone, resulting in diverse magnetite ores due to metasomatism. The mineralization process of the Makeng iron deposit is basically the same, as it is composed of typical skarn deposits. Magnetite was mainly formed during calcic skarn formation stage, and this process persisted until the initial phase of the retrograde alteration of skarns. Shale gas production is obviously higher within the Silurian Longmaxi Formation than that of the Cambrian Niutitang Formation according to the drilling test results in the northwest Hunan area. To clarify the reasons behind this variation, core samples from the two sets of shales were studied for a comprehensive comparison and analysis of their organic matter (OM) pore structure. Methods were used, including the total organic carbon content test, the vitrinite reflectance test, X-ray diffraction, and focused ion-beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM). The results show that these two shales have similar reservoir characteristics, both with abundant organic matter and high content of brittle minerals. However, the Longmaxi shale with 2.3% to 3.0%Ro presents lower thermal maturity than the Niutitang shale with over 3.0%Ro. In the case of pore structure associated with OM, a huge difference exists between the two shales. The OM pore shape of the Longmaxi shale is very regular, being mostly round and oval, while the OM pore shape of the Niutitang shale is irregular, being flat with a thin middle and thick and elongated ends. An important factor affecting OM pore evolution is thermal maturity. In turn, the thermal maturity is controlled by the tectonic evolution process, especially the maximum paleo-burial depth. In conclusion, the paleo-burial depth of the Lower Cambrian Niutitang shale in northwest Hunan is too large, which leads to the excessive evolution of organic matter in the shale, and the physical and chemical properties are similar to graphite, which leads to the disappearance of OM pores. Shale gas has no effective reservoir space and is largely dispersed in geological history. At the same time, due to the insufficient hydrocarbon-generation evolution time of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation shale in this area, the shale could not form enough gaseous hydrocarbons and a large amount of effective reservoir space (OM pores with regular shape and large pore size), and finally failed to become a gas reservoir. Therefore, the exploration and development potential of the marine shale gas of the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation and the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in northwest Hunan is poor. Microscopic pore structures are of great significance in evaluating shale gas reservoirs and understanding the occurrence state of shale gas. Integrating geochemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), low-temperature N2 adsorption (LTNA), mercury injection pressure (MIP), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), this work systematically characterized microscopic pore structures and then discussed their controlling factors, for the Lower Carboniferous Luzhai (C1lz) shale in Guizhong Depression. The results show that pores in the Luzhai shale are generally shaped by ink bottles, parallel plates, and slits, which are characterized by a larger pore throat ratio, lower efficiency of mercury withdrawal, and poor connectivity. Micropores (<2 nm) and mesopores (2 nm-50 nm) provide the primary specific surface area (SSA) of shale reservoirs, dominantly controlled by the contents of TOC and clay minerals, whereas pore volume is mainly contributed from mesopores, which is positively correlated to quartz content. The fractal dimension (2.94) of macropores is higher than that (2.65) of mesopores, corresponding more complicated and heterogeneous pore structure. With increasing pore size, the correlation between TOC and fractal dimension of macropores weakens. The unconnected pores in mesoscopic range are more complex than connected pores, primarily resulting from morphology and deformation of clay minerals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Sayashk tin (Sn) deposit is located within the southern part of the Eastern Junggar orogenic belt in Xinjiang Province and forms part of the Kalamaili alkaline granite belt. There are many Sn polymetallic deposits in the area. To constrain the age, genesis, and tectonic setting of the Sayashk tin deposit in the East Junggar region, we conducted a bulk-rock geochemical analysis of the granite porphyry (SR1) and medium- to fine-grained granite (SR2) hosts of the deposit, LA-ICP-MS zircon U–Pb dating and Lu–Hf isotopic analysis, as well as molybdenite Re–OS dating and combined our results with the metallogenic conditions and other geological characteristics of the deposit. The results show that the Sayashk Sn deposit is indeed spatially, temporally, and genetically closely related to the granite porphyry and medium-fine-grained granite. Both zircon U–Pb ages are 308.2 ± 1.5 Ma and 310.9 ± 1.5 Ma, respectively. The isochron age of molybdenite is 301.4 ± 6.7 Ma, which represents the crystallization age of the granite porphyry and medium-fine-grained granite. Therefore, all of them formed in the late Carboniferous epoch. The medium-fine-grained granites and granite porphyry are characteristically rich in Si and alkali, poor in Ca and Mg, rich in high field-strength elements (HFSE, e.g., Zr, Hf) and Ce, and deficient in Ba, Sr, Eu, P, and Ti. They are typical A-type granites, showing the characteristics of a mixed crustal mantle source. The εHf(t) values of the zircon from the granite porphyry (SR1) range from 10.27 to 16.17 (average 13.71), εHf(t) values of the zircon from the medium-fine-grained granites (SR2) are between 5.72 and 9.21 (average 7.08), and the single model ages (TDM1) and two-stage model ages (TDM2) of the granite porphyry (SR1) fall within the ranges of 319~535 Ma and 339~644 Ma. The single model ages (TDM1) and two-stage model ages (TDM2) of the medium-fine-grained granites (SR2) fall within the ranges of 346~479 Ma and 309~557 Ma. There is little difference between their two-stage model ages and zircon U–Pb ages, indicating that the Sayashk granite may be the product of partial melting of juvenile crustal. At present, the understanding of the sedimentary paleoenvironment and organic matter enrichment law of black shale in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation is still insufficient. This time, we investigated the total organic carbon (TOC) content, X-ray diffraction mineralogical composition, and the major and trace element abundances of the newly recovered cores of three shale gas exploration wells in Changning, Qianjiang, and Xiushan areas which were, respectively, selected to discuss and compare the varying paleoenvironmental conditions and the factors that control organic matter accumulation, such as terrigenous input, redox conditions, primary productivity, and the degree of water retention in the basin. The results show that black siliceous shale lithofacies, gray-black shale lithofacies, gray-black silty shale lithofacies, gray argillaceous siltstone lithofacies, and gray shell marl lithofacies are mainly deposited in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in the southeastern Sichuan Basin. Organic-rich black shale is mainly concentrated in the lower part of the Wufeng Formation and Longmaxi Formation. The continuous thickness of organic carbon content greater than 2% in the Changning area is 32 m, the continuous thickness in the Qianjiang area is 22 m, and the continuous thickness in the Xiushan area is 11 m. The hydrocarbon generation potential gradually weakens from west to east. The identification of the geochemical behavior characteristics of major and trace elements shows that enrichment of the organic matter black shale section in the Changning-Qianjiang-Xiushan areas is mainly formation in the anoxic-moderate water mass restriction environment with high primary productivity and less terrigenous detritus input under the low hydrodynamic conditions. However, the correlations of terrigenous detrital proxies Ti/Al, redox proxies V/Cr, Ni/Co, and paleoproductivity proxies Babio with the TOC contents show that the Changning area is a favorable area for the formation of organic-rich black shale and the Qianjiang area is affected by the Wuling underwater uplift; the thickness of the black shale deposits becomes thinner; the Xiushan area is adjacent to the Xuefeng uplift, and the deposition conditions of the accumulation of organic matter black shale deteriorate, which is unfavorable for shale gas exploration. Mud shale is characterized by low strength and strong swelling, with rheological effects and deformation caused by drilling fluid and formation water. Establishing a rheological model to characterize the deformation characteristics is key to solving the problem of wellbore stability. The influence of moisture content on rock strength and creep mechanical properties were studied by means of water absorption, uniaxial compression, and creep tests. The tests showed that with the increase in moisture content, the elastic modulus and strength of hard brittle mud shale decreased. Further, under the same load, the instantaneous strain increased with increasing moisture content. Meanwhile, under various loading stresses, rock creep exhibited non-linear characteristics, which can be divided into three different creep stages: attenuated creep, stable creep, and accelerated creep. Starting with a non-linear viscous dashpot, and then introducing aging degradation and water-bearing weakening effects, based on the water-bearing creep characteristics of hard brittle shale as well as the modeling ideas of the classic component combination model, a new improved creep model based on the Nishihara model was established to describe the characteristics of the accelerated creep stage of hard brittle mud shale with various moisture contents. Subsequently, the Levenberg–Marquardt non-linear, least-squares method was adopted to invert the creep parameters. The results showed that the simulated creep curves achieved by employing the new creep model were consistent with the experimental results, thereby confirming the ability of the new non-linear creep model to provide a theoretical reference for the study of wellbore stability of hard brittle mud shale. The large, newly discovered Lijiagou pegmatite spodumene deposit, is located southeast of the Ke'eryin pegmatite ore field, in the central Songpan-Garze Fold Belt (SGFB), Eastern Tibet. The Lijiagou albite spodumene pegmatites are unzoned, granite-pegmatites of the subtype LCT (Lithium, Cesium, and Tantalum) and consist of medium- to coarse-grained spodumene, lepidolite, microcline, albite, quartz, muscovite, and accessory amounts of beryl, cassiterite, columbite-tantalite and zircon. Secondary fluid inclusions in quartz and spodumene include two-phase aqueous inclusions (V + L), mono-phase vapor inclusions (V); three-phase CO2-rich CO2-H2O inclusions (CO2 + V + L) and less abundant liquid inclusions (L). The homogenization temperature of the fluid inclusions are low (257.3 to 204.3°C in early stage, 250.3 to 199.6°C in middle stage, 218.7 to 200.6°C in late stage). Fluid inclusions were formed during the long cooling period from the temperature of the pegmatite emplacement. Liquid-vapor-gas boiling was extensive during the middle and late stages. The salinity of the corresponding stages are 15.4 to 13.0 wt.% NaCl equiv., 12.5 to 9.1 wt.% NaCl equiv. and 9.8 to 7.8 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. δ18O values of fluid are 7.2 to 5.2‰, 5.6 to 3.9‰ and 2.7 to −0.2‰ from early to late stages; and δD range from −75.1 to −76.8‰, −59.0 to −73.5‰ and −61.6 to −85.5‰ respectively. The δ13C of CO2 values are −5.6 to −6.6‰, −8.5 to −19.9‰, −11.8 to −18.7‰ from early to late stages, suggesting that CO2 in the fluids were probably sourced from a magmatic system, possibly with some mixing of CO2 dissolved in groundwater. δD and δ18O values of fluid indicate that the fluids were originally magmatic water and mixed with some meteoric water in late stage. The magma evolution sequence in the Ke'eryin orefield, from the central two-mica granite through the Lijiagou deposit out to the distal pegmatites, with the ages gradually decreasing, indicates that the Ke'eryin complex rocks are the product of multistage magmatic activity. The performed morphotectonic regionalization of the northwestern Caucasus shows that the fold structures directly expressed in the topography of the territory and continuing to evolve under the settings of contemporary lateral shortening predominate in the northwestern Caucasus. A map of fold structures expressed in the topography of the northwestern Caucasus is presented. The districts distinguished therein correspond to the largest regional tectonic units, the fold topography of which occurs at various stages of tectonic evolution from primary brachyanticlinal ridges of the Taman and Sochi districts to the complex fold-thrust and inversion fold ridges of the axial zone. Data on active newly formed fold and inversion structures are given. In 2010, a 500-km-long wide-angle reflection/refraction seismic profile was completed, running northwest from the central Sichuan Basin. This profile orthogonally crosses the meizoseismal area of great Wenchuan earthquake of 12 May 2008, which occurred in the central part of the Longmenshan. The profile also passes through the northwestern Sichuan Plateau, along which a new deep seismic sounding observation system was set up that was much improved over previous datasets and enabled abundant observations to be recorded. Seismic wave phase records that reflect the structural characteristics of different tectonic blocks, especially the complicated phase features associated with the Wenchuan earthquake, were calculated and analyzed in detail. A 2D crustal P-wave velocity model for the orogenic belt in the central Longmenshan and its margins was determined, and crustal structure differences between the stable Sichuan Basin and the thickened northwestern Sichuan Plateau were characterized. Lithological variations within the upper and lower crust in the interior of the plateau, especially a great velocity decrease and plastic rheological properties associated with strong lithologic weakening in lower crust, were detected. From west to east in the lower crust beneath the orogenic belt lying between the Sichuan Basin and the northwestern Sichuan Plateau, a giant shovel-like upwelling is observed that dips gently in the lower part and at higher angles in the upper part; this is inferred to be related to the fault systems in the central Longmenshan. An upwelling in the upper-middle crust along the eastern margin of the orogenic belt is associated with steeply dipping thrusts that strongly uplift the upper crust and crystalline basement beneath a central fault system in the Longmenshan. The data, combined with an understanding of the regional tectonic stress field and previous geological results, enable a discussion of basin-and-range coupling, orogenic tectonics, the crustal fault system, and the seismogenic tectonic environment of the central Longmenshan along the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The time gap between diagenesis and mineralization (TGDM) for comagmatic gold deposits (CGD) plays an important role in confirming the genetic relationship between gold deposits and their related intrusions. With the help of preciously published isotopic ages of some typical gold deposits and their related rocks in China, the authors have discussed and quantified the distribution characteristics and scope of the TGDM. Statistical analyses and Kolmogorov tests showed that mineralizing events are either contemporaneous with or slightly postdate their cognate magma. The TGDM conforms with normal distributions at a 0.05 confidence level and clusters between 0 and 16.0 Ma with a mean of 7.0 Ma. Thus, if the TGDM of CGD is less than 16.0 Ma, it is reasonable to consider, with the aid of other evidence, the possibility of its comagmatic genetic affiliation. The authors also emphasized that to get a precise time gap it is necessary to strengthen the diagenesis-mineralization geological background of the deposits studied, and to pay attention to the study of time gap in combination with trace elements and isotope tracing. Chuankou tungsten (W) ore field, with an estimated WO3 reserve exceeding 300,000 tonnes, is so far the largest Indosinian (Triassic) granite-related W ore field in South China. However, the precise emplacement ages, sources of granitoids, and their relationship with W mineralization are still not well understood. In this research, four main magmatic stages (G-1 to G-4) have been identified in the Chuankou ore field, including G-1 (phase I, biotite monzogranite), G-2 (phase II, two-mica monzogranite), G-3 (phase III, fine-grained granite), and G-4 (phase IV, granite porphyry). LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of zircon grains from granitoids of the Chuankou W ore field yields emplacement ages of 230.8 ± 1.6 Ma, 222.1 ± 0.56 Ma, 203.1 ± 1.6 Ma, and 135.5 ± 2.4 Ma, respectively. Granitoids from the Chuankou ore field contain a large amount of peraluminous minerals such as biotite, musvite, garnet and tourmaline. Geochemically, the granitoids have high Si and Al (A/CNK > 1.1) content but low alkali, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Ca content. Moreover, there is enrichment of Rb, Zr, Hf, Th, and U, but depletions of Ba, Sr, P, and Ti. The granitoids have especially low Zr + Nb + Ce + Y and high Rb/Ba ratios, further indicating a highly fractionated S-type granite affinity with a significant crystal fractionation process in regard to K-feldspar, plagioclase, biotite, Ti-bearing minerals (except rutile), zircon, apatite, allanite, and monazite. Whole-rock εNd(t) and TDM2 values are −10.77 and 2090 Ma for G-1, −9.09 to −7.47 and 1764–1684 Ma for G-2, −10.07 to −6.53 and 1669–1471 Ma for G-3, respectively, indicating that the Chuankou granitoids were derived from two episodes of partial melting of the Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic metamorphic basement. Trace elements within the zircons and whole-rock geochemistry yielded evidence of the close relationship between W mineralization and G-1 and G-2 granitoids of the Chuankou ore field. The batholith of the Chuankou ore field was formed 20–10 Ma later than the peak age of the collisions orogeny and formed in a post-collisional setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
