Due to the widespread use of mulching film in cotton planting in China, residual mulching film mixed with machine-picked cotton poses a significant hazard to cotton processing. Detecting residual mulching film in seed cotton has become particularly challenging due to the film's semi-transparent nature. This study constructed an imaging system combining an area array camera and a line scan camera. A detection scheme was proposed that utilized features from both image types. To simulate online detection, samples were placed on a conveyor belt moving at 0.2 m/s, with line lasers at a wavelength of 650 nm as light sources. For area array images, feature extraction was performed to establish a partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model. For line scan images, texture feature analysis was used to build a support vector machine (SVM) classification model. Subsequently, image features from both cameras were merged to construct an SVM model. Experimental results indicated that detection methods based on area array and line scan images had accuracies of 75% and 79%, respectively, while the feature fusion method achieved an accuracy of 83%. This study demonstrated that the proposed method could effectively improve the accuracy of residual mulching film detection in seed cotton, providing a basis for reducing residual mulching film content during processing. Foreign fibers directly impact the quality of raw cotton, affecting the prices of textile products and the economic efficiency of cotton textile enterprises. The accurate differentiation and labeling of foreign fibers require domain-specific knowledge, and labeling scattered cotton foreign fibers in images consumes substantial time and labor costs. In this study, we propose a semi-supervised foreign fiber detection approach that uses unlabeled image information and a small amount of labeled data for model training. Our proposed method, Efficient YOLOv5-cotton, introduces CBAM to address the issue of the missed detection and false detection of small-sized cotton foreign fibers against complex backgrounds. Second, the algorithm designs a multiscale feature information extraction network, SPPFCSPC, which improves its ability to generalize to fibers of different shapes. Lastly, to reduce the increased network parameters and computational complexity introduced by the SPPFCSPC module, we replace the C3 layer with the C3Ghost module. We evaluate Efficient YOLOv5 for detecting various types of foreign fibers. The results demonstrate that the improved Efficient YOLOv5-cotton achieves a 1.6% increase in mAP@0.5 (mean average precision) compared with the original Efficient YOLOv5 and reduces model parameters by 10% compared to the original Efficient YOLOv5 with SPPFCSPC. Our experiments show that our proposed method enhances the accuracy of foreign fiber detection using Efficient YOLOv5-cotton and considers the trade-off between the model size and computational cost. It is important to detect and classify foreign fibers in cotton, especially white and transparent foreign fibers, to produce subsequent yarn and textile quality. There are some problems in the actual cotton foreign fiber removing process, such as some foreign fibers missing inspection, low recognition accuracy of small foreign fibers, and low detection speed. A polarization imaging device of cotton foreign fiber was constructed based on the difference in optical properties and polarization characteristics between cotton fibers. An object detection and classification algorithm based on an improved YOLOv5 was proposed to achieve small foreign fiber recognition and classification. The methods were as follows: (1) The lightweight network Shufflenetv2 with the Hard-Swish activation function was used as the backbone feature extraction network to improve the detection speed and reduce the model volume. (2) The PANet network connection of YOLOv5 was modified to obtain a fine-grained feature map to improve the detection accuracy for small targets. (3) A CA attention module was added to the YOLOv5 network to increase the weight of the useful features while suppressing the weight of invalid features to improve the detection accuracy of foreign fiber targets. Moreover, we conducted ablation experiments on the improved strategy. The model volume, mAP@0.5, mAP@0.5:0.95, and FPS of the improved YOLOv5 were up to 0.75 MB, 96.9%, 59.9%, and 385 f/s, respectively, compared to YOLOv5, and the improved YOLOv5 increased by 1.03%, 7.13%, and 126.47%, respectively, which proves that the method can be applied to the vision system of an actual production line for cotton foreign fiber detection. Abstract: It is difficult to separate foreign fiber objects from the background in a live image captured by an automated visual inspection system for foreign fiber detection due to the inhomogeneous background brightness and various types of foreign fibers in different colors and shapes. This paper presents a saliency-based color image segmentation method aiming at foreign fiber detection. The RGB color image captured in real-time was firstly separated into , and color channels. Then the red, green and blue color features were calculated respectively from the corresponding , and channels. Afterwards, three saliency maps were obtained from these three color features and then fused together. The fused saliency map was segmented to get the color foreign fiber objects. Those foreign fiber objects in dark black or bright white were also segmented out using a threshold method from the brightness saliency map. Finally, all foreign fiber objects obtained were fused together to obtain the final objects. The results indicate that the proposed method can segment out color foreign fiber objects as well as gray foreign fiber objects in dark black or bright white. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
