Emotional disorders inflict an enormous burden on society. Research on brain abnormalities implicated in emotional disorders has witnessed great progress over the past decades. Using cross‐sectional and longitudinal designs, resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs‐fMRI) and its analytic approaches have been applied to characterize the local properties of patients with emotional disorders. Additionally, brain activity alterations of emotional disorders have shown frequency‐specific. Despite the gains in understanding the roles of brain abnormalities in emotional disorders, the limitation of the small sample size needs to be highlighted. Lastly, we proposed that evidence from the positive psychology research stream presents it as a viable discipline, whose suggestions could be developed in future emotional disorders research. Background: The neuropathophysiological mechanisms of brain damage underlying hypothyroidism remain unclear. Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) has been established as a reliable indicator for investigation of abnormal spontaneous brain activity that occurs at specific frequencies in different types of mental disorder. However, the changes of fALFF in specific frequency bands in hypothyroidism have not yet been investigated. Methods: Fifty-three hypothyroid patients and 39 healthy controls (HCs) underwent thyroid-related hormone levels tests, neuropsychological assessment, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. The fALFF in the standard band (0.01-0.1 Hz), slow-4 (0.027-0.073 Hz), and slow-5 bands (0.01-0.027 Hz) were analyzed. An analysis of Pearson correlation was conducted between fALFF, thyroid-related hormone levels, and neuropsychological scores in hypothyroid patients. Results: Compared to HCs, within the routine band, hypothyroidism group showed significantly decreased fALFF in left lingual gyrus, middle temporal gyrus (MTG), precentral gyrus, calcarine cortex, and right inferior occipital gyrus; within the slow-5 band, the hypothyroidism group exhibited decreased fALFF in left lingual gyrus, MTG, superior temporal gyrus, postcentral gyrus, and paracentral lobule, and increased fALFF in supplementary motor area (SMA) and right middle frontal gyrus; additionally, fALFF in the left lingual gyrus within the routine and slow-5 bands were negatively correlated with the level of thyroid stimulating hormone. Conclusions: In this study, the slow-5 frequency band exhibits better sensitivity than the standard band in detecting fALFF values. A decrease of fALFF values in the lingual gyrus and MTG was observed in both the standard and slow-5 bands and might present potential neuroimaging biomarkers for hypothyroidism. Background Premature ejaculation (PE) is linked with abnormal brain activity that is modifiable by electroacupuncture (EA). Aim In this study we aimed to explore the central pathological mechanism underlying EA in treating PE. Methods Six-week-old male Sprague–Dawley rats were divided into a PE group (n = 8) and a control group (n = 8) according to ejaculatory frequency during copulatory behavior. All rats underwent EA at the Zusanli acupoint (ST-36) for 4 weeks. Magnetic resonance imaging data were collected before and after EA. Outcomes The behavioral parameters, plasma norepinephrine levels, fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF), and regional homogeneity (ReHo) were evaluated. Results The PE group ejaculated more times with shorter latency compared with controls. After EA, the ejaculation frequency of the PE group decreased, and the ejaculation latency period increased, with no changes observed in the control group. Norepinephrine levels were higher in the PE group than in the controls and were positively correlated with ejaculation frequency and negatively correlated with ejaculation latency. The PE group showed lower fALFF in the right striatum and higher ReHo in the brainstem compared with controls. After EA, controls showed decreased fALFF in the right striatum, left olfactory bulb, and dorsal fornix and increased ReHo in the right interpeduncular nucleus, as well as decreased ReHo in the left striatum, prelimbic system, right basal forebrain region, septal region, and olfactory bulb, while the model group exhibited increased fALFF in the right hypothalamic region, decreased fALFF in the left globus pallidum and right basal forebrain region and increased ReHo in the right interpeduncular nucleus, as well as decreased ReHo in the left striatum, olfactory bulb, basal forebrain region, dentate gyrus, right dysgranular insular cortex, and striatum. Compared with the controls after EA, the model group showed increased ReHo of the right hypothalamic region and decreased ReHo of the right dysgranular insular cortex. Clinical Implications These findings might enhance the understanding of PE and contribute to new, targeted therapies for PE. Strengths and Limitations The therapeutic effects might be achieved by EA inhibiting the activity in brain regions involved in ejaculatory behavior. However, the curative effect of acupuncture might be underestimated due to some curative effects of sham acupuncture used in the control group. Conclusion In conclusion, the ejaculatory frequency of rats may be reduced and ejaculation latency could be extended by EA at ST-36, which might be achieved by the effects of this treatment on brain activity. BackgroundThis study aims to investigate the underlying characteristics of spontaneous brain activity by analyzing the volumes of the hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus, as well as the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo), in order to differentiate between bipolar disorder (BD) and unipolar depressive disorder.MethodsA total of 46 healthy controls, 58 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 61 patients with BD participated in the study and underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans. The researchers calculated the differences in volume, fALFF, and ReHo values among the three groups. Additionally, they conducted correlation analyses to examine the relationships between clinical variables and the aforementioned brain measures.ResultsThe results showed that the BD group exhibited increased fALFF in the hippocampus compared to the healthy control (HC) and MDD groups. Furthermore, the ReHo values in the hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus were significantly higher in the BD group compared to the HC group. The findings from the person correlation analysis indicated a positive relationship between ReHo values in the hippocampus and both HAMD and HAMA scores. Moreover, there was no correlation between the volumes, fALFF, and ReHo values in the hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus, and cognitive function levels (RBANS).ConclusionTaken together, these aberrant patterns of intrinsic brain activity in the hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus may serve as quantitative indicators for distinguishing between BD and unipolar depression.

Background: Psychogenic erectile dysfunction (PED) can seriously affect emotional and marital wellbeing. Electroacupuncture (EA) seems an effective method for treating PED. However, the central mechanisms underlying PED and the beneficial effects of EA treatment are unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the central mechanisms of PED and to examine the impact of EA on erectile function. Methods: We recruited 14 PED patients and 14 matched normal controls (NCs). PED patients underwent twice rs-fMRI scans, respectively, pre- and posttreatment. The NCs only completed one rs-fMRI scan. We used the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) to compare spontaneous neural activity between the PED patients and NCs, and to examine the differences between the pre- and post-EA treatment scans in the PED patients. Results: Scores on the IIEF5, QEQ, and SEAR improved after EA treatment. Compared with the NCs, PED patients showed increased fALFF in the right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), right supplementary motor area (SMA), and left middle occipital gyrus. Most of these regions are closely implicated in sexual inhibition. The results of the correlation analysis results indicated that the fALFF of the right PCC was negatively correlated with IIEF5 scores. After treatment, fALFF values were substantially lower in the left triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus, right DLPFC, right SMA, bilateral PCC and the orbital part of the middle frontal gyrus, and higher in the left middle temporal gyrus and left caudate nucleus. These regions mainly belong to the default mode network (DMN), executive control network and primary sensory motor network. The results of the correlation analysis indicated a positive association between the changes in IIEF5 score and changes in the fALFF value in the right PCC after EA treatment. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study highlights that PED patients have abnormal patterns of activity in the right PCC, right DLPFC, and right SMA mainly involved in the DMN, executive central network, and sensory motor network which could lead to a higher levels of sexual inhibition. EA might regulate the process of sexual inhibition to improve erection function in PED patients probably by modulating spontaneous brain activity in the DMN, executive central network, and sensory motor network. Purpose: We aimed to identify the aberrant functional hubs in patients with acute severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) and investigate whether they could help inform prognosis. Methods: Twenty-eight sTBI patients and health controls underwent imaging scanning. The graph-theoretical measure of degree centrality (DC) was applied to identify the abnormal brain functional hubs and conjoined with regions of interest-based analysis to investigate their interaction and impact on whole-brain. We further split sTBI patients into two subgroups according to their recovery to explore whether the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) roles in functional connectivity (FC) differential areas to help inform the patients' long-term prognosis. Results: We identified the part of prefrontal cortex (PFC), precentral and postcentral gyrus (Pre-/Post-CG), cingulate gyrus (CgG), posterior medial cortex (PMC), and brainstem that could be core hubs whose DC was significantly increased in patients with acute sTBI. The interaction strength of the paired hubs could be enhanced (CG-PFC, CgG-PFC, CG-brainstem, CgG-brainstem, PMC-brainstem, and PFC-brainstem) and weakened (CG-CgG, CG-PMC, CgG-PMC, and PMC-PFC), compared with healthy controls. We also found abnormal FC in 5 hubs to whole-brain. The spontaneous brain activities in the FC differential regions [e.g., the fALFF and mean fALFF value] were valid to predict outcome at 6-month in patients with sTBI. Conclusion: We demonstrated a compensatory mechanism that part of brain regions will converge into abnormal functional hubs in patients with acute sTBI, which provides a potential approach to objectively predicting patients' long-term outcome. Results: Patients with DE had significantly higher fALFF values in the left calcarine sulcus (CS) than the HC group, while fALFF values in the bilateral middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and right MFG/right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) were significantly lower in DE patients than in HC group. fALFF values had a high diagnostic value for differentiating patients with DE from the HC group (P < 0.001). Right MFG and right MFG/IFG were significantly correlated with HADS values. Objective To investigate the changes of fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) in brains of patients with BP Ⅱ depression based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), and to explore the pathological mechanism. Methods In total of 20 patients with BP Ⅱ depression (the patients group or BP group) and 24 volunteers without neuropsychiatric disease and family history of psychiatric disorders were recruited (the healthy control group or HC group) . In BP group, the clinical symptoms of the patients were evaluated by the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD17), Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA), Young's manic scale (YRMS) and Beck scale for suicidal ideation (BSI). All the participants were assessed with the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), including RBANS overall score and 5 cognitive domain factors containing immediate memory, visual span, language, attention and delayed memory to evaluate cognitive function. rs-fMRIscans were performed on all the participants. The statistical fALFF aberrant brain areas were screened out between the two groups through DPABI4. 3 and SPM12 software analysis, and FC between statistical fALFF aberrant brain areas and other voxels in the whole brain was analyzed. The partial correlation analysis was conducted on fALFF values, FC values of statistical aberrant brain areas in BP group and clinical symptom scale scores (including HAMD scale score, HAMA scale score, YMRS scale score, BSI scale score), cognitive function scale scores. Results The total score of RBANS and three cognitive domain factors (immediate memory, attention, delayed memory) scores of patients in BP group were lower than those of HC group. Compared with HC group, the brain regions with significantly increased fALFF scores of patients in BP group were the right cerebelum crural 2 area, the right medial frontal gyrus and left corpus callosum, and the brain regions with significantly decreased fALFF scores was the right fusiform, all P<0. 05. The fALFF value of the right cerebelum crural 2 area of the patients in BD group was positively correlated with visual span score (r=0. 514, P=0. 035) . Compared with HC group, the connections with significantly reduced FC value of patients in BP were right fusiform gyrus and right occipitoglossal gyrus, right fusiform gyrus and right superior temporal gyrus, and right fusiform gyrus and left paracentral lobule, all P<0. 05. FC values between the right fusiform and the right occipital lingual gyrus of the patients in BP group was positively correlated with attention score (r=0. 515, P=0. 034), FC values between the right fusiform and the right superior temporal gyrus was positively correlated with HAMD score, HAMA score (r=0. 586, P<0. 05；r=0. 538, P< 0. 05). Conclusions Compared with HC group, patients with BP Ⅱ depression have abnormal spontaneous neural activity in the right cerebelum crural 2 area, the right medial frontal gyrus, the left corpus callosum and the right fusiform. Besides, FC significantly decreases between the right fusiform and the right occipital lingual gyrus, the right superior temporal gyrus, the left paracentral lobule. to explore the differences in the central response after acupuncture and moxibusbution at Zúsānlĭ (足三里ST36) in treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD) based on the analysis of fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rfMRI). a total of 60 patients with FD were randomized into an acupuncture group and a moxibustion group, 30 cases in each one. In the acupuncture group, acupuncture was applied to bilateral ST36. In the moxibustion group, moxibustion was exerted at bilateral ST36. The treatment was given once a day, 5 times a week, totally for 4 weeks in each group, including 20 treatments with acupuncture or moxibustion. Separately, before and at the end of treatment, rfMRI scanning was conducted in two groups. Using data processing assistant for resting-state fMRI (DPARSF) software and MATLAB data platform, rfMRI data were collected for preprocessing and fALFF analysis. compared with the data before treatment, after treated with acupuncture at ST36 in FD patients, fALFF value was reduced in the right superior frontal gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus, right cuneus, left precuneus, right middle occipital gyrus, left middle occipital gyrus, etc., and it was increased in the left parahippocampus, right parahippocampus, left cerebellum, etc (all P < 0.01). After treated with moxibustion, the remarkable increase of fALFF was not discovered in brain areas, but fALFF decreased significantly in the left superior parietal gyrus (P < 0.01). Compared with moxibustion at ST36, after acupuncture at ST36 in FD patients, the increase of fALFF appeared in the right putamen and the decrease of it occurred in the middle occipital gyrus, indicating the statistical significance (both P < 0.05). the differences in central function responses are induced in treamtent with acupuncture and moxibustion, which is probably related to the resting-state default network associated with targeted regulation and ventral attention of brain areas in functional dyspepsia. Background: The rate of patients with unilateral hearing impairments (UHI) increase with age and are characterized by asymmetric auditory afferents in which auditory information is asymmetrically transmitted to the brain. Long-term bilateral hearing imbalance can cause abnormal functional changes in the cerebral cortex. However, the relationship between functional alterations in the brain and the severity of the hearing impairment remains unclear.Methods: This study included 33 patients with UHI (left-sided impairment in 17 and right-sided impairment in 16) and 32 healthy patients. All participants underwent resting-state, blood oxygen level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging. Fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) values were calculated after data preprocessing and compared among the left-sided and right-sided impairment groups and the control group. Pure tone audiometry was used to evaluate patients' hearing impairment level. The correlation between fALFF values of abnormal brain regions and the duration and severity of hearing impairment was analyzed.Results: Results provide evidence for altered resting-state functional activities in the brain of patients with left or right long-term UHI, with significantly increased fALFF values in the Heschl's gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, and insula were observed. Moreover, complicated networks reorganization involved in the visual, cognitive, sensorimotor and information transmission functions except for the auditory function and some brain regions exhibited functional changes only in the one-sided impairment group. In addition, the severity of hearing impairment is related with the functional activities in the bilateral Heschl's gyrus, bilateral insula, right superior temporal gyrus, and left middle frontal gyrus.Conclusion: In conclusion, alterations in functional activity are observed in the brains of patients with long-term hearing impairments and multiple brain regions within different functional networks are involved in the brain functional remodeling. The brain reintegration mechanism appears to be asymmetrical and the lateralization pattern in the contralateral brain hemisphere for auditory information processing related with the severity of hearing impairment. Parkinson's disease (PD), the second most frequent neurodegenerative disease, affects significantly life quality by a combination of motor and cognitive disturbances. Although it is traditionally associated with basal ganglia dysfunction, cortical alterations are also involved in disease symptoms. Our objective is to evaluate the alterations in brain dynamics in de novo and recently treated PD subjects using a nonlinear method known as Active Information Storage. In the current research, Active Information Storage (AIS) was used to study the complex dynamics in motor cortex spontaneous activity captured using resting state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rs-fMRI) at early-stage in non-medicated and recently medicated PD subjects. Supplementary to AIS, the fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuation (fALFF), which is a better-established technique of analysis of rs-fMRI signals, was also evaluated. Compared to healthy subjects, the AIS values were significantly reduced in PD patients over the analyzed motor cortex regions; differences were also found at less extent using the fALFF measure. Correlations between AIS and fALFF values showed that the measures seem to capture similar neuronal phenomena in rs-fMRI data. The highest sensitivity when detecting group differences revealed by AIS, and not captured by traditional linear approaches, suggests that this measure is a promising tool for the analysis of rs-fMRI neural data in PD. Antipsychotic medications can have a significant effect on brain function after only several days of treatment. It is unclear whether such an acute effect can serve as an early predictor for treatment response in schizophrenia. Thirty-two patients with drug-naive, first-episode schizophrenia and 32 healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Patients were treated with olanzapine and were scanned at baseline and 1 week of treatment. Healthy controls were scanned once at baseline. Symptom severity was assessed within the patient group using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at three time points (baseline, 1 week of treatment, and 8 weeks of treatment). The fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and support vector regression (SVR) methods were used to analyze the data. Compared with the control group, the patient group showed increased levels of fALFF in the bilateral putamen at baseline. After 1week of olanzapine treatment, the patient group showed decreased levels of fALFF in the right putamen relative to those at baseline. The SVR analysis found a significantly positive relationship between the reduction in fALFF after 1 week of treatment and the improvement in positive symptoms after 8 weeks of treatment (r = 0.431, p = 0.014). The present study provides evidence that early reduction and normalization of fALFF in the right putamen may serve as a predictor for treatment response in patients with schizophrenia.

Unilateral hearing impairment is characterized by asymmetric hearing input, which causes bilateral unbalanced auditory afferents and tinnitus of varying degrees. Long-term hearing imbalance can cause functional reorganization in the brain. However, differences between intrinsic functional changes in the brains of patients with left- and those with right-sided long-term hearing impairments are incompletely understood. This study included 67 patients with unilateral hearing impairments (left-sided, 33 patients; right-sided, 34 patients) and 32 healthy controls. All study participants underwent blood oxygenation level dependent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and T1-weighted imaging with three-dimensional fast spoiled gradient-echo sequences. After data preprocessing, fractional amplitude of low frequency (fALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) analyses were used to evaluate differences between patients and healthy controls. When compared with the right-sided hearing impairment group, the left-sided hearing impairment group showed significantly higher fALFF values in the left superior parietal gyrus, right inferior parietal lobule, and right superior frontal gyrus, whereas it showed significantly lower fALFF values in the left Heschl’s gyrus, right supramarginal gyrus, and left superior frontal gyrus. In the left-sided hearing impairment group, paired brain regions with enhanced FC were the left Heschl’s gyrus and right supramarginal gyrus, left Heschl’s gyrus and left superior parietal gyrus, left superior parietal gyrus and right inferior parietal lobule, right inferior parietal lobule and right superior frontal gyrus, and left and right superior frontal gyri. Background: This study aims to investigate the underlying characteristics of spontaneous brain activity by analyzing the volumes of the hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus, as well as the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo), in order to differentiate between bipolar disorder (BD) and unipolar depressive disorder., Methods: A total of 46 healthy controls, 58 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 61 patients with BD participated in the study and underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans. The researchers calculated the differences in volume, fALFF, and ReHo values among the three groups. Additionally, they conducted correlation analyses to examine the relationships between clinical variables and the aforementioned brain measures., Results: The results showed that the BD group exhibited increased fALFF in the hippocampus compared to the healthy control (HC) and MDD groups. Antipsychotic medications can have a significant effect on brain function after only several days of treatment. It is unclear whether such an acute effect can serve as an early predictor for treatment response in schizophrenia. Thirty-two patients with drug-naive, first-episode schizophrenia and 32 healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Patients were treated with olanzapine and were scanned at baseline and 1 week of treatment. Healthy controls were scanned once at baseline. Symptom severity was assessed within the patient group using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at three time points (baseline, 1 week of treatment, and 8 weeks of treatment). The fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and support vector regression (SVR) methods were used to analyze the data. Compared with the control group, the patient group showed increased levels of fALFF in the bilateral putamen at baseline. After 1week of olanzapine treatment, the patient group showed decreased levels of fALFF in the right putamen relative to those at baseline. The SVR analysis found a significantly positive relationship between the reduction in fALFF after 1 week of treatment and the improvement in positive symptoms after 8 weeks of treatment (r = 0.431, p = 0.014). The present study provides evidence that early reduction and normalization of fALFF in the right putamen may serve as a predictor for treatment response in patients with schizophrenia. Unilateral hearing impairment is characterized by asymmetric hearing input, which causes bilateral unbalanced auditory afferents and tinnitus of varying degrees. Long-term hearing imbalance can cause functional reorganization in the brain. However, differences between intrinsic functional changes in the brains of patients with left- and those with right-sided long-term hearing impairments are incompletely understood. This study included 67 patients with unilateral hearing impairments (left-sided, 33 patients; right-sided, 34 patients) and 32 healthy controls. All study participants underwent blood oxygenation level dependent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and T1-weighted imaging with three-dimensional fast spoiled gradient-echo sequences. After data preprocessing, fractional amplitude of low frequency (fALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) analyses were used to evaluate differences between patients and healthy controls. When compared with the right-sided hearing impairment group, the left-sided hearing impairment group showed significantly higher fALFF values in the left superior parietal gyrus, right inferior parietal lobule, and right superior frontal gyrus, whereas it showed significantly lower fALFF values in the left Heschl's gyrus, right supramarginal gyrus, and left superior frontal gyrus. In this study, combining degree centrality (DC) and fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) analyses of resting state (rs)-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, we aimed to explore functional connectivity density, local brain spontaneous activity, and their coupling strengths in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Forty-three BPD patients and 39 demographically-matched controls underwent rs-fMRI after completing a series of psychological tests. Two-sample t-tests were performed to compare DC and fALFF between these two groups. Across-voxel correlation analysis was conducted to assess DC-fALFF coupling strengths in each group. Imaging parameters and psychological variables were correlated by Pearson correlation analysis in the BPD group. Altered DC and fALFF values in the BPD group, compared with the control group, were distributed mainly in default mode network (DMN), and DC-fALFF coupling strengths were decreased in the left middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and right precuneus in the BPD group. Additionally, insecure attachment scores correlated positively with left precuneus DC and negatively with fALFF of the right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) in the BPD group. These altered DC and fALFF findings indicate that the BPD patients had disturbed functional connectivity density and local spontaneous activity in the DMN compared with control subjects. Their decreased connectivity-amplitude coupling suggests that the left MTG and right precuneus may be functional impairment hubs in BPD. Disturbed rs function in the left precuneus and right PCC might underlie insecure attachment in BPD.

Objective To observe time-variant effects of needling Zhigou(SJ6) on fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations(fA LFF) in thebrainsof healthy subjects atresting state by using functional magnetic imaging(fM RI). Methods Eighteen healthy participants were scanned with fM RI. The scanning involved pre-treatment pure resting state(R1), then needle-retention resting states(R2-R5) and post-treatment resting states(R6 ～ R7). All gathered data was analyzed with fA LFF method. Results(1)The fA LFF of bilateral precuneus transformed from inactivation before treatment topositive activation after treatment and maintained tillR6 state(except for R5), and the amplitude as well as clusters of activation both remained stable.(2)fA LFF of superior frontal gyrus and medial frontal gyrus were strengthened on the basis of pre-treatment activation within R1; alternating positive activation on both sides of the two gyri were observed within R2, R4, R5 and R6 states except for R3 state, during within which both sides had positive activations.(3)Compared with R1, the fA LFF of inferior parietal lobule transformed from deactivations to positive activations only within R2 and R3 state, as there were no significant changes within R4-R7.(4)The fA LFF of cerebellum posterior lobe presented positive activation within R2 state and both cerebellum anterior and posterior lobe presented positive activation within R6 while made deactivations within R3 and R5 states. Conclusions The findings of this study could provide certain theoretical foundation for acupuncture on SJ6 in the treatment of diseases with weakened function of precuneus, superior frontal gyrus, medial frontal gyrus, inferior parietal lobule and strengthened function of cerebellum anterior and posterior lobefrom the perspective of brain energy metabolism. Objective: To find out the difference between children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and normal control, and the difference between boys and girls with ADHD in resting-state. Methods: There were 38 children with ADHD in this study including 31 boys and 7 girls, meanwhile, 42 normal controls whose age and gender were matched with children with ADHD were involved too, including 29 boys and 13 girls. Total scores of ADHD rating scale (ADHD-RS) were used to measure the severity of symptom for both ADHD and normal control. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to collect the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, and the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (f^VLFF) was measured for each child. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to find out the difference bet\veen the group and the sex. Results: Children with ADHD showed a higher fALFF in the right medial superior frontal gyrus and right supplementary motor area, and a lower fALFF in the left putamen, bilateral cerebellum and bilateral precuneus than controls (all corrected P<0.05). ADHD boys showed a lower fALFF in the left cerebellum and a higher fALFF in the bilateral medial superior frontal gyrus than boys without ADHD (all corrected P <0. 05). ADHD girls showed a higher fALFF in the bilateral cerebellum and in the thalamus than girls without ADHD, and a lower fALFF in the insula than girls without ADHD (all corrected P<0.05). There was a negative relationship between the fALFF of the left cerebellum of ADHD girls and the sores of inattention symptoms. Background: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is becoming highly prevalent among female and is characterized by emotional, physical and behavior symptoms. Previous evidence suggested functional dysregulation of female brain was expected to be involved in the etiology of PMS. The aim of present study was to evaluate the alterations of spontaneous brain activity in PMS patients based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).Methods: 20 PMS patients and 21 healthy controls underwent resting-state fMRI scanning during luteal phase. All participants were asked to complete a prospective daily record of severity of problems (DRSP) questionnaire.Results: Compared with healthy controls, the results showed that PMS patients had increased fALFF in bilateral precuneus, left hippocampus and left inferior temporal cortex, and decreased fALFF in bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and cerebellum at luteal phase. Moreover, the DRSP scores of PMS patients were negatively correlated with the mean fALFF in ACC and positively correlated with the fALFF in precuneus.Limitations: (1) the study did not investigate whether or not abnormal brain activity differences between groups in mid-follicular phase, and within-group changes. between phases.(2) it was relatively limited sample size and the participants were young; (3) fALFF could not provide us with more holistic information of brain network;(4) the comparisons of PMS and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) were not involved in the study.Conclusions: The present study shows abnormal spontaneous brain activity in PMS patients revealed by fALFF, which could provide neuroimaging evidence to further improve our understanding of the underlying neural mechanism of PMS. Background: Psychogenic erectile dysfunction (PED) can seriously affect emotional and marital wellbeing. Electroacupuncture (EA) seems an effective method for treating PED. However, the central mechanisms underlying PED and the beneficial effects of EA treatment are unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the central mechanisms of PED and to examine the impact of EA on erectile function., Methods: We recruited 14 PED patients and 14 matched normal controls (NCs). PED patients underwent twice rs-fMRI scans, respectively, pre- and post-treatment. The NCs only completed one rs-fMRI scan. We used the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) to compare spontaneous neural activity between the PED patients and NCs, and to examine the differences between the pre- and post-EA treatment scans in the PED patients., Results: Scores on the IIEF5, QEQ, and SEAR improved after EA treatment. Compared with the NCs, PED patients showed increased fALFF in the right posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), right supplementary motor area (SMA), and left middle occipital gyrus. Most of these regions are closely implicated in sexual inhibition. The results of the correlation analysis results indicated that the fALFF of the right PCC was negatively correlated with IIEF5 scores. After treatment, fALFF values were substantially lower in the left triangular part of the inferior frontal gyrus, right DLPFC, right SMA, bilateral PCC and the orbital part of the middle frontal gyrus, and higher in the left middle temporal gyrus and left caudate nucleus. These regions mainly belong to the default mode network (DMN), executive control network and primary sensory motor network. The results of the correlation analysis indicated a positive association between the changes in IIEF5 score and changes in the fALFF value in the right PCC after EA treatment., Conclusion: In conclusion, our study highlights that PED patients have abnormal patterns of activity in the right PCC, right DLPFC, and right SMA mainly involved in the DMN, executive central network, and sensory motor network which could lead to a higher levels of sexual inhibition. Tobacco use during later adolescence and young adulthood may cause serious neurophysiological changes; rationally, it is extremely important to study the relationship between brain dysfunction and behavioral performances in young adult smokers. Previous resting state studies investigated the neural mechanisms in smokers. Unfortunately, few studies focused on spontaneous activity differences between young adult smokers and nonsmokers from both intra-regional and inter-regional levels, less is known about the association between resting state abnormalities and behavioral deficits. Therefore, we used fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) to investigate the resting state spontaneous activity differences between young adult smokers and nonsmokers. A correlation analysis was carried out to assess the relationship between neuroimaging findings and clinical information (pack-years, cigarette dependence, age of onset and craving score) as well as cognitive control deficits measured by the Stroop task. Consistent with previous addiction findings, our results revealed the resting state abnormalities within frontostriatal circuits, i.e., enhanced spontaneous activity of the caudate and reduced functional strength between the caudate and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in young adult smokers. Moreover, the fALFF values of the caudate were correlated with craving and RSFC strength between the caudate and ACC was associated with the cognitive control impairments in young adult smokers. Our findings could lead to a better understanding of intrinsic functional architecture of baseline brain activity in young smokers by providing regional and brain circuit spontaneous neuronal activity properties as well as their association with cognitive control impairments. In light of future pharmacological interventions, neuroimaging markers able to assess the response to treatment would be crucial. In Granulin (GRN) disease, preclinical data will prompt pharmacological trials in the future. Two main points need to be assessed: (1) to identify target regions in different disease stages and (2) to determine the most accurate functional and structural neuroimaging index to be used. To this aim, we have taken advantage of the multivariate approach of multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to explore the information of brain activity patterns in a cohort of GRN Thr272fs carriers at different disease stages (14 frontotemporal dementia (FTD) patients and 17 asymptomatic carriers) and a group of 33 healthy controls. We studied structural changes by voxel-based morphometry (VBM), functional connectivity by assessing salience, default mode, fronto-parietal, dorsal attentional, executive networks, and local connectivity by regional homogeneity, amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF), fractional ALFF (fALFF), degree centrality, and voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity. In FTD patients with GRN mutation, the most predictive measure was VBM structural analysis, while in asymptomatic carriers the best predictor marker was the local connectivity measure (fALFF). Altogether, all indexes demonstrated fronto-temporo-parietal damage in GRN pathology, with widespread structural damage of fronto-parietal and temporal regions when disease is overt. MVPA could be of aid in identifying the most accurate neuroimaging marker for clinical trials. This approach was able to identify both the target region and the best neuroimaging approach, which would be specific in the different disease stages. Further studies are needed to simultaneously integrate multimodal indexes in a classifier able to trace the disease progression moving from preclinical to clinical stage of the disease. Purpose To examine thalamic and cortical injuries using fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFFs) and functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) based on resting state (RS) and task-related fMRI in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Materials and Methods Twenty-seven patients and 27 age-matched controls were recruited. The 3 Tesla fMRI at RS and finger tapping task were used to assess fALFF and fcMRI patterns. fALFFs were computed with filtering (0.01-0.08 Hz) and scaling after preprocessing. fcMRI was performed using a standard seed-based correlation method, and delayed fcMRI (coherence) in frequency domain were also performed between thalamus and cortex. Results In comparison with controls, MTBI patients exhibited significantly decreased fALFFs in the thalamus (and frontal/temporal subsegments) and cortical frontal and temporal lobes; as well as decreased thalamo-thalamo and thalamo-frontal/ thalamo-temporal fcMRI at rest based on RS-fMRI (corrected P < 0.05). This thalamic and cortical disruption also existed at task-related condition in patients. Conclusion The decreased fALFFs (i.e., lower neuronal activity) in the thalamus and its segments provide additional evidence of thalamic injury in patients with MTBI. Our findings of fALFFs and fcMRI changes during motor task and resting state may offer insights into the underlying cause and primary location of disrupted thalamo-cortical networks after MTBI. J. Abstract: Background: Recent resting-state fMRI studies on major depressive disorder (MDD) have found altered temporal correlation between low-frequency oscillations (LFOs). However, changes on the amplitudes of these LFOs remain largely unknown. Methods: Twenty-two medication-naive, first-episode patients with MDD and 19 age-, sex-, education-matched healthy controls were recruited. Resting-state fMRI was obtained by using an echo-planar imaging sequence and the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) was calculated to investigate the amplitude of LFOs in the resting state. Results: Compared with control subjects, patients with MDD showed significantly decreased fALFF in right cerebellum posterior lobe, left parahippocampal gyrus and right middle frontal gyrus and increased fALFF in left superior occipital gyrus/cuneus (p<0.05, corrected for multiple comparisons). Further receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) analyses suggested that the alterations of fALFF in these regions might be used as markers to classify patients with MDD from healthy controls. Background: Antipsychotic medications are the common treatment for schizophrenia. However, reliable biomarkers that can predict individual treatment response are still lacking. The present study aimed to examine whether baseline putamen activity can predict individual treatment response in schizophrenia., Methods: Two independent samples of patients with drug-naive, first-episode schizophrenia (32 patients in sample 1 and 44 in sample 2) and matched healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at baseline. Patients were treated with olanzapine for 8 weeks; symptom severity was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline and week 8. Fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and pattern classification techniques were used to analyze the data., Findings: Univariate analysis shows an elevated pre-treatment fALFF in the left ventromedial putamen in both patient samples compared to healthy controls (p's < 0.001). The support vector regression (SVR) analysis suggests a positive relationship between baseline pre-treatment fALFF in the left ventromedial putamen and improvement in positive symptom at week 8 in each patient group using a cross-validated method (r = 0.452, p = .002; r = 0.511, p = .003, respectively)., Interpretation: Our study suggests that elevated pre-treatment mean fALFF in the left ventromedial putamen may predict individual therapeutic response to olanzapine treatment in drug-naive, first-episode patients with schizophrenia. Future studies are needed to confirm whether this finding is generalizable to patients with schizophrenia treated with other antipsychotic medications. Twenty four subjects with childhood trauma and 24 age- and gender-matched subjects without childhood trauma were recruited. Executive function was assessed by a series of validated test procedures. Localized brain activity was evaluated by fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF) method and compared between two groups. Areas with altered fALFF were further selected as seeds in subsequent functional connectivity analysis. Correlations of fALFF and connectivity values with severity of childhood trauma and executive dysfunction were analyzed as well. Subjects with childhood trauma exhibited impaired executive function as assessed by Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Stroop Color Word Test. Traumatic individuals also showed increased fALFF in the right precuneus and decreased fALFF in the right superior temporal gyrus. Significant correlations of specific childhood trauma severity with executive dysfunction and fALFF value in the right precuneus were found in the whole sample. In addition, individuals with childhood trauma also exhibited diminished precuneus-based connectivity in default mode network with left ventromedial prefrontal cortex, left orbitofrontal cortex, and right cerebellum. Decreased default mode network connectivity was also associated with childhood trauma severity and executive dysfunction. The present findings suggest that childhood trauma is associated with executive deficits and aberrant default mode network functions even in healthy adults. Objective: The motivation of this study is to evaluate the possible alteration of regional resting state brain activity induced by the acute radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure (30min) of Long Term Evolution (LTE) signal., Methods: We designed a controllable near-field LTE RF-EMF exposure environment. Eighteen subjects participated in a double-blind, crossover, randomized and counterbalanced experiment including two sessions (real and sham exposure). The radiation source was close to the right ear. Then the resting state fMRI signals of human brain were collected before and after the exposure in both sessions. We measured the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and fractional ALFF (fALFF) to characterize the spontaneous brain activity., Results: We found the decreased ALFF value around in left superior temporal gyrus, left middle temporal gyrus, right superior temporal gyrus, right medial frontal gyrus and right paracentral lobule after the real exposure. And the decreased fALFF value was also detected in right medial frontal gyrus and right paracentral lobule., Conclusions: The study provided the evidences that 30min LTE RF-EMF exposure modulated the spontaneous low frequency fluctuations in some brain regions., Significance: With resting state fMRI, we found the alteration of spontaneous low frequency fluctuations induced by the acute LTE RF-EMF exposure., (Copyright © 2013 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology.
