The junction of the Dinaric and Hellenic mountain belts hosts a trans-orogenic normal fault system (Shkoder-Peja Normal Fault, SPNF) that has accommodated oroclinal bending, as well as focused basin formation and drainage of the Drin River catchment. Analysis of fluvial morphology of this catchment reveals higher values of river slope indices (ksn) and χ (Chi) between the normal faults of the SPNF and the Drin drainage divide. The drainage divide is predicted to be migrating away from the SPNF, except at the NE end of the SPNF system. Two basins analysed in the hangingwall of the SPNF, the Western Kosovo Basin (WKB) and Tropoja Basin (TB), contain late Pliocene-to-Holocene sedimentary rocks deposited well after the main fault activity and immediately after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). These layers document an early Pleistocene transition from lacustrine to fluvial conditions that reflects a sudden change from internal to external drainage of paleo-lakes. In the TB, these layers were incised to form three generations of river terraces, interpreted to reflect episodic downstream incision during re-organisation of the paleo-Drin River drainage system. 36Cl-cosmogenic-nuclide depth-profile ages of the two youngest terraces (∼12, ∼8 ka) correlate with periods of wetter climate and increased sediment transport in post-LGM time. The incision rate (∼12 mm/yr) is significantly greater than reported in central and southern Albania. Thus, glacial/interglacial climatic variability, hinterland erosion and base-level changes appear to have regulated basin filling and excavation cycles when the rivers draining the WKB and TB became part of the river network emptying into the Adriatic Sea. These dramatic morphological changes occurred long after normal faulting and clockwise rotation on the SPNF initiated in late Oligocene-Miocene time. Faulting provided a structural and erosional template upon which climate-induced erosion in Holocene time effected reorganisation of the regional drainage pattern, including the formation and partial demise of lakes and basins. The arc of the main drainage divide around the SPNF deviates from the general coincidence of this divide with the NW-SE trend of the Dinaric-Hellenic mountain chain. This arc encompasses the morphological imprint left by roll-back subduction of the Adriatic slab beneath the northwestern Hellenides.

High‐resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) have revolutionized research in geomorphology by allowing for detailed quantitative analysis of Earth's surface. Satellite stereo images offer the promise of expanding the availability of high‐resolution DEMs over broad areas, but rigorous evaluation of the scientific application of these datasets remains limited. In this study, we consider DEMs built using stereo pairs of high‐resolution (0.5 m) satellite imagery and the open‐source DEM extraction algorithm, Surface Extraction from TIN Space‐search Minimization (SETSM). We selected locations across a range of landscapes to evaluate the application of these DEMs to geomorphic problems, with particular attention to hillslope analyses where high spatial resolution has been shown to be important for revealing topographic signatures of tectonic and environmental processes. We compared the quality of SETSM 2 m DEMs to LiDAR‐derived DEMs and the widely available SRTM‐30 m and ALOS‐30 m DEMs by comparing the elevation data and derivative products (e.g., slope, aspect, and curvature). We found that SETSM DEMs performed noticeably better than SRTM and ALOS DEMs, but with systematic biases relative to LiDAR DEMs in regions with vegetation. Moreover, noise in the initial SETSM elevation data is amplified with every subsequent derivative, significantly decreasing quality. Finally, we evaluated the potential use of SETSM products for change detection. Applying DEM differencing to a major landslide, we found volume and sediment thickness from SETSM DEMs were similar to volumes and thicknesses from other studies. This example illustrates the capabilities of SETSM and other satellite‐based stereo‐photogrammetry for contributing to rapid response after natural disasters. Overall, we conclude that DEMs derived from satellite image stereo‐photogrammetry can markedly improve on lower resolution global elevation data for terrain analysis and can open possibilities for change detection, but that care needs to be taken in their application especially in regions with significant vegetation. We present a new hydro-morphological index of diversity (HMID), a tool aimed for use in river engineering projects and firstly developed at gravel-bed streams in Switzerland, but intended for a broader use. We carried out field work with extensive hydraulic and geomorphic data collection, conducted correlation analysis with hydro-morphological variables, formulated the HMID, and analyzed the correlation between HMID and a visual habitat assessment method. The HMID is calculated by means of the coefficient of variation of the hydraulic variables flow velocity and water depth, which have been demonstrated to sufficiently represent the hydro-morphological heterogeneity of alpine gravel-bed stream reaches. Based on numerical modeling, the HMID can be calculated easily for a comparison of different alternatives in river engineering projects and thus achieves predictive power for design decisions. HMID can be applied at a reach-related scale in engineering programs involving geomorphic measures that aim at the enhancement of habitat heterogeneity of a stream. However, the application of HMID has to be integrated with evaluations of the long-term streambed evolvements that are considered at a catchment scale and strongly related to the sediment regime of the stream under study.
