La puesta en marcha y desarrollo de todo tipo de actividades mineras, ya se encuentren relacionadas con la extracción y producción de áridos o con cualquier otro subsector, está generando una serie de repercusiones medioambientales de cada vez mayor gravedad y amplitud a escala global. Por este motivo, el análisis del territorio en búsqueda de su detección, diagnóstico y tratamiento se ha vuelto cada vez más imprescindible, bien para la comprobación de que se cumple con la normativa vigente, o bien para instaurar otra clase de medidas vinculadas a la prevención de futuros impactos, a la corrección de las alteraciones ya producidas, a una restauración adecuada de los terrenos afectados o a la aplicación de iniciativas por el clima y la biodiversidad que puedan contribuir a hacer un mundo más limpio y sostenible, y que a su vez se traduzca en la mejora de la calidad de vida del ser humano y del entorno que le rodea. En el caso de la provincia de Valladolid y el municipio de La Cistérniga, objetos de la presente investigación, los objetivos son los mismos, ya que la industria de los áridos se encuentra muy presente en ambos territorios desde hace ya muchos años., The implementation and development of all types of mining activities, whether related to the extraction and production of aggregates or any other subsector, is generating a series of environmental repercussions of increasing severity and scope on a global scale. For this reason, the analysis of the territory in search of its detection, diagnosis and treatment has become increasingly essential, either to verify compliance with current regulations, or to establish other types of measures linked to the prevention of future impacts, to the correction of the alterations already produced, to an adequate restoration of the affected land or to the application of initiatives for the climate and biodiversity that can contribute to making a cleaner and more sustainable world, and which in turn translates into the improvement of the quality of life of human beings and the surrounding environment. This thesis argues that gravel pits present an opportunity to conserve the vegetation and Lepidoptera of dry grasslands. Dry grasslands are among the most biodiverse, but also most suppressed and fragmented, nature types in Denmark. More than half of the Lepidoptera known to Denmark are associated with open habitats such as dry grasslands. The thesis examines three gravel pits of different ages, two finished in the ‘70s and one finished in recent years, in Helsingør Municipality, Denmark. The main data is a frequency survey of the vegetation in each gravel pit, supplemented by a species list of observed Lepidoptera and a soil analysis of pH values and nitrogen (N) levels. Plant communities are described using the Shannon Diversity Index (SDI), weighted average Ellenberg Indicator Values (EIVs), and calibrated Grime plant strategies. Weighted average EIVs showed that the gravel pits contain species with niches similar to dry grasslands. Indicator species of different types of grasslands were more accurate than the EIVs at predicting differences in soil pH between sites. The two older gravel pits had higher species richness and contained twice the proportions of dry grassland-associated plant species than the recently finished gravel pit. The gravel pit with the lowest diversity in plant species also had the highest number of competitive traits in the plant community, and the highest relative abundance of grasses. The gravel pits showcased various Lepidoptera species (up to fifteen in one gravel pit) in just a few days of observation. They also contained numerous host plants for additional Lepidoptera species. Soil samples showed that the two older gravel pits have lower pH values and higher N levels than the recently finished gravel pit. Er zijn meer dan 500 zand- en grindwinplassen in Nederland. Het winnen van grind heeft veel nieuw oppervlaktewater gecreëerd. Dat beïnvloedt de waterkringlopen, de chemische kringlopen en de ecologie zowel in positieve als negatieve zin. Vergeleken met natuurlijke meren en plassen zijn zandwinputten een relatief jong fenomeen. In de toekomst zouden de Nederlandse zand- en grindplassen mogelijk intensiever gebruikt kunnen worden als toeristisch alternatief voor het té warme zuiden van Europa.

Management of tourism-based protected areas is often faced with a challenge of balancing nature conservation and tourism development. Understanding such interactions is crucial for resources management in tourism-based conservation hotspots such as Etosha National Park (ENP). This study assessed how roads, being part of tourism development, impacts on conservation efforts in ENP, focusing specifically on the roadside landscape, vegetation and soils. Data was collected at at 30 selected sites in major vegetation communities within the park. Herbaceous biomass was assessed using a Disk Pasture Meter based on field calibration from ENP. Soil samples were collected using a soil auger and analyzed. Results show that a substantial network of tourist roads has been developed for Etosha National Park, translating in a road density of 0.2 km/km2. The development of this road network has left more than 180 unrestored gravel pits, or an average of one gravel pit for every 4 km. Similarly, results demonstrated that roads and related vehicular activities have significant impact on the foliage cover and biomass yield of herbaceous species adjacent to the roads, with foliage cover decreasing with increasing proximity to roads. No conclusive evidence emerged to suggest that roads and vehicular emission have a significant impact on roadside soil chemical properties. An exception is made to elevated calcium, carbonate and high cation exchange capacity which is speculated to have been sourced from the Etosha limestone. This study concluded that an unrestricted development of roads and the accompanying quarrying of gravels have a potential to degrade the landscape of Etosha National Park. As a first attempt, this study serves as a baseline for monitoring tourism related ecological disturbances in the park.

Årtiers grusgravning har skabt et foranderligt landskab ved Tarup-Davinde, nær Odense. Flade landbrugsjorder er gennem tiden udskiftet med skrænter og søer. Efter endt råstofindvinding efterbehandles arealerne til natur- og rekreative formål. Der er forsat graveaktivitet i området, men afviklingen er nært forestående. Det er derfor relevant, at anskueliggøre hvordan de nyere graveområder fremover kan indgå i det rekreative fritidslandskab. Gennem tre hæfter; Program, Forslag og Proces præsenteres et forslag til hvordan grusgravsområdet ved Tarup-Davinde kan omprogrammeres til nutidig brug ved tilføjelse af en række landskabelige og arkitektoniske elementer. I de seneste årtier har man ved afvikling af grusgravene i Tarup-Davinde omdannet skarpe kanter og skrænter til bløde, organiske former. Nærværende forslag gør op med dette paradigme. Områdets historie skal i fremtiden afspejles i terrænets former, blandt andet ved tydeliggørelse af skrænter skabt ved grusgravningen. Forslaget beskæftiger sig ikke med de områder som allerede er omdannet til rekreativ brug, men fokuserer på de graveområder som vil blive afviklet i nærmeste fremtid. Forslaget beskriver tre nedslagspunkter; Væksthuset, Sejlklubben og Skrænten. De to førstnævnte er mødesteder, der fungerer som samlingspunkt og facilitator for en række rekreative aktiviteter. Skrænten derimod, et bemærkelsesværdigt landskabeligt element, 900 meter lang og 10 meter høj, fortæller historien om den omfattende råstofgravning i området. Hensynet til det menneskeskabte landskab med søer og skrænter, og inddragelsen af dette i forslaget, medfører en fastholdelse af stedets særlige karakter. Forslaget inspirerer til bevarelse og tydeliggørelse af de menneskeskabte landskabsformer, som vi gennem tiderne har tilføjet, og bidrager til idéen om at lade dem indgå i omdannelsen og planlægningen af fremtidens råstoflandskaber., Decades of gravel excavation have created a variable landscape at Tarup-Davinde near Odense. Over time the flat farm land has been replaced by slopes and lakes. When the excavation of raw materials has finished, the area is changed to serve recreational purposes. There is still some digging activity in the area, but it will soon be completed. So it is relevant to show how these new gravel pits can become part of the recreational leisure landscape. In the three pamphlets called Program, Proposal, and Process it is suggested how the gravel pit area at Tarup-Davinde can be turned into an area of contemporary use by adding a number of rural and architectural elements. During the last decades the sharp edges and slopes have been reshaped into into soft, organic shapes in connection with the phaseout of the gravel pits. The present proposal challenges this paradigm. In future the history of the area should be reflected in the shapes of the country, and the slopes which have emerged as a result of the gravel excavation for instance should be visible. The proposal does not deal with the areas which have already been transformed into recreational use, but concentrates on the areas in which excavation has taken place and will be phased out in the near future. The proposal describes three points of interest – ’Væksthuset’, ’Sejlklubben’ and ’Skrænten’. ’Væksthuset’ and ’Sejlklubben’ are meeting places which serve as rendezvous and facilitate a number of recreational activities. ’Skrænten’ is a remarkable landscape element; it is 900 metres long and 10 metres high and tells a story of large-scale excavation of raw materials in the area. The proposal respects and includes the landscape with lakes and slopes created by human being thus maintaining the special character of the area. Voor ophoogzand en klei zijn we zelfvoorzienend; de winbaarheid wordt vooral beperkt door ruimtelijke ordeningsaspecten. Jaarlijks wordt in Nederland een paar honderd hectare land ontgraven voor de winning van delfstoffen. Deze ontgrondingen gaan veelal gepaard met verandering van het landschap en de functie van het te ontgronden gebied. Dit heeft onvermijdelijk effect voor de natuurwaarden ter plaatse. Met de voorliggende gedragscode geeft de sector aan hoe zij bij landwinningen van oppervlaktedelfstoffen in Nederland invulling wil geven aan de verplichtingen vanuit de Flora- en faunawet, hoe zij schade aan natuurwaarden zoveel mogelijk wil voorkomen én hoe zij zoveel mogelijk ontwikkelingskansen wil bieden aan nieuwe natuur in ontgrondingslocaties.

Bodemonderzoek en -sanering is niet louter een technisch-inhoudelijke aangelegenheid. Er kan van alles bij komen kijken, zoals een bewonerscomité, voorlichtingsavonden, bezwaren en andere juridische procedures, geweigerde toestemming om een terrein te betreden, schadevergoedingen en aandacht van de pers. Daarnaast kan beleid wijzigen en kunnen nieuwe onderzoeksresultaten tot andere inzichten leiden. Dat bijna alle denkbare bijkomende zaken rondom één bodemsaneringslocatie zullen optreden, lijkt al helemaal onwaarschijnlijk. Toch is dit allemaal gebeurd bij onderzoek en sanering van een met mijnsteen en mijnslik aangevuld grindgat in Limburg. Grontmij is sinds 1993 betrokken bij de aanpak van deze locatie in opdracht van de Provincie Limburg

This volume accompanies the main report and supplemental environmental impact statement for the Phase II General Design Memorandum for the Santa Ana River Mainstem including Santiago Creek and contains the general design for the Santiago Creek. The recommended plan for Santiago Creek consists of modifying the existing gravel pits for flood control storage, constructing an outlet structure from the gravel pits with a release capacity of 3500 cu ft/s and constructing a riprapped channel between the Santa Ana Freeway and the confluence with the Santa Ana River. The 5.5 miles of creek between the outlet structure and channel in the vicinity of Walnut Avenue to the beginning of the riprapped channel south of the Santa Ana Freeway would not be improved and would be managed by the local sponsor in accordance with FEMA guidelines., See also Volume 7, ADA204547.

The mining of sand and gravel deposits in the floodplains of rivers can disturb valuable riparian habitat in the arid Southwest. Disturbed land can be reclaimed to provide fish and wildlife habitat if water is present. The depth, shoreline shape and slope, area, location and number of sand and gravel pits, and the plant species that revegetate disturbed areas can be managed to influence subsequent colonization by animals. Native species of plants generally are preferable to exotics when revegetating disturbed areas, even if native species require special treatments to become established. Stream side pits can be made into backwater habitats, but they must be protected from flooding and sedimentation. Monitoring of critical habitat features and plant and animal species is necessary to document the effectiveness of reclamation efforts, and to ensure that habitat, once established, is not lost.

This report describes the results of a cultural resource assessment of gravel quarry impacts on five prehistoric sites (5BN198-5BN202; JM-72-JM-76) previously recorded by Science Applications, Inc. and limited surface reconnaissance of the Santa Fe Trail segments (5BN391) within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) property at the John Martin Reservoir, Bent County, Colorado. The gravel quarry operations conducted in the E 1/2 of NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 35 and the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 35 Township 22S, Range 51W, have severely impacted all of site 5BN202 (JM-76) and the northeast edge of Site 5BN199 (JM-73); the other sites have not been affected by the gravel pit operations. The recent reevaluation by Mariah Associates, Inc. indicates that problems may exist in the identification and quantification of artifacts; and the reported location of some sites 5BN198 (JM-72); 5BN138 (JM-03).
