The automated recognition of landforms holds significant importance within the framework of digital geomorphological mapping, serving as a pivotal focal point for research and practical applications alike. Over the last decade, various methods have been developed to achieve this goal, ranging from grid-based to object-based approaches, covering a range from supervised to completely unsupervised techniques. Furthermore, the vast majority of the methods mentioned depend on Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) as their primary input, highlighting the crucial significance of meticulous preparation and rigorous quality assessment of these datasets. In this study, we compare the outcomes of grid-based methods for landforms extraction and surficial process type assessment, leveraging various DEMs as input data. Initially, we employed a photogrammetric Digital Terrain Model (DTM) generated at a regional scale, along with two LiDAR datasets. The first dataset originates from an airborne survey conducted by the national government approximately a decade ago, while the second dataset was acquired by UAV as part of this study's framework. The results highlight how the higher resolution and level of detail of the LiDAR datasets allow the recognition of a higher number of features at higher scales; but, in contrast, generally, a high level of detail corresponds with a higher risk of noise within the dataset, mostly due to unwanted natural features or anthropogenic disturbance. Utilizing these datasets for generating geomorphological maps harbors significant potential in the framework of natural hazard assessment, particularly concerning phenomena associated with geo-hydrological processes. Understanding natural phenomena with the help of modern scientific approaches helps to reach sustainable solutions for current and future water-related problems. In this context, present study aims to assess relative influencing level of physical factors in controlling groundwater level, using a novel grid-based delineation technique, in Lower Palar River Basin, in Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts of South India. The influencing factors viz-a-viz: rainfall, soil texture, land use/land cover, terrain slope, geomorphology, lithology, and drainage characteristics were considered for the study. Archived data (2011 to 2020) of monthly rainfall at four rain gauge stations and monthly groundwater level of 22 locations, soil texture, lithology, and geomorphology data were considered for the study. SRTM digital elevation model with 30-m resolution was used for analyzing drainage characteristics and terrain slope. Thematic maps for considered factors were prepared, using common grid delineation method in GIS platform that divided study area into 52 grids, to inter-relate the discrete and continuous parameters with groundwater level. Results indicate that level of influence increases in the order of precipitation followed by lithology, land use/land cover, terrain slope, geomorphology, infiltration number, and soil texture. The study shows groundwater resilience is highly influenced by soil texture and infiltration number compared to other factors considered. It can be concluded that grid-based delineation successfully identifies grids with significant influence of individual factors by comparing with groundwater resilience. Common grid-based delineation method proves to be more effective in assessing groundwater resilience and can be used more efficiently in groundwater studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traffic accidents have been one of the most important global public problems. It has caused a severe loss of human lives and property every year. Studying the influential factors of accidents can help find the reasons behind. This can facilitate the design of effective measures and policies to reduce the traffic fatality rate and improve road safety. However, most of the existing research either adopted methods based on linear assumption or neglected to further evaluate the spatial relationships. In this paper, we proposed a methodology framework based on XGBoost and grid analysis to spatially analyze the leading factors on traffic fatality in Los Angeles County. Characteristics of the collision, time and location, and environmental factors are considered. Results show that the proposed method has the best modeling performance compared with other commonly seen machine learning algorithms. Eight factors are found to have the leading impact on traffic fatality. Spatial relationships between the eight factors and the fatality rates within the Los Angeles County are further studied using the grid-based analysis in GIS. Specific suggestions on how to reduce the fatality rate and improve road safety are provided accordingly.

Spatio-temporal characterization of urban expansion is the first step towards understanding how cities grow in space. We summarize two approaches used in urban expansion measurement, namely, concentric-ring analysis and grid-based analysis. Concentric-ring analysis divides urban areas into a series of rings, which is used to quantify the distance decay of urban elements from city centers. Grid-based analysis partitions a city into regular grids that are used to interpret local dynamics of urban growth. We combined these two approaches to characterize the urban expansion between 2000–2014 for five large Latin American cities (São Paulo, Brazil; Mexico City, Mexico; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Bogotá, Columbia; Santiago, Chile). Results show that the urban land (built-up area) density in concentric rings decreases from city centers to urban fringe, which can be well fitted by an inverse S curve. Parameters of fitting curves reflect disparities of urban extents and urban form among these five cities over time. Grid-based analysis presents the transformation of population from central to suburban areas, where new urban land mostly expands. In the global context, urban expansion in Latin America is far less rapid than countries or regions that are experiencing fast urbanization, such as Asia and Africa. Urban form of Latin American cities is particularly compact because of their rugged topographies with natural limitations.

In this study, we applied a self-organizing map (SOM) neural network method to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of land-use in Beijing using five time-period classification data from 2005 to 2013. We conducted a spatiotemporal integrated expression and a comparative analysis of the time-series of land use data at 5 km grid level. The experiments at the township level and three different grid levels (20 km, 10 km and 1 km) were simultaneously conducted as the comparison study to analysis the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP). The land use structure data of analysis unit over 5 years were used as input data for SOM. After training the SOM network, the aggregation modes for different land use types were identified on the output plane. Then, the second-step cluster of the output neurons of the SOM was analyzed to construct a series of land use change trajectories that enabled us to get the spatiotemporal patterns of land use change. The results showed five spatial aggregation patterns and three spatiotemporal change patterns of land use 2005 to 2013. The three patterns of spatiotemporal change represent (1) the expansion of urban areas onto farmland in the southeast plains, (2) the development of forest land in the northwest mountainous areas, and (3) the development of piedmont mixed type land use structures. The results of the comparison experiments showed the zoning effect and the scale effect of MAUP, which were: the 5 km grid-based analysis could provide more precise spatiotemporal evolution patterns in the mountainous area, whereas the township level analysis was more appropriate in the plain area; the pattern of forest land development could be better revealed on 20 km and 10 km grid level, while the pattern of built-up land development could be better revealed on 5 km and 1 km grid level. • Using SOM method detects the spatiotemporal evolution pattern of land use. • This study conducts a comparative analysis of land use change in administrative unit and grid unit. • This study comprehensively analyzes the zoning effect and the scale effect of MAUP in land use change. This study had three aims. The first was to assess the performance of the weights-of-evidence (WofE) landslide susceptibility model in areas that are very different in terms of size, geoenvironmental settings, and landslide types. The second was to test the appropriate strategies to sample the mapped landslide polygon. The final aim was to evaluate the performance of the method to changes in the landslide sample size used to train the model. The method was applied to two areas: the Fella River basin (eastern Italian Alps) containing debris flows, and Buzau County (Romanian Carpathians) with shallow landslides. The three landslide sampling strategies used were: (1) the landslide scarp centroid, (2) points populating the scarp on a 50-m grid, and (3) the entire scarp polygon. The highest success rates were obtained when sampling shallow landslides as 50-m grid-points and debris flow scarps as polygons. Prediction rates were highest when using the entire scarp polygon method for both landslide types. The sample size test using the landslide centroids showed that a sample of 104 debris flow scarps was sufficient to predict the remaining 941 debris flows in the Fella River basin, while 161 shallow landslides was the minimum required number to predict the remaining 1451 scarps in Buzau County. Below these landslide sample thresholds, model performance was too low. However, using more landslides than the threshold produced a plateau effect with little to no increase in the model performance rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 0.5-degree grid-based assessment of the scarcity of global water resources including virtual water trading has been made. The three components of water availability considered for each grid were local runoff, routed flow from upstream and virtual water trading. Several assumptions were postulated to convert country-base estimations of virtual water trading to grid values. The results show that unequal spatial distribution of global water resources had been considerably neutralized by virtual water trading. A large proportion of people in the Middle-East, North-Africa and Sub-Sahara region are able to relieve their water stress through virtual water import. The paper also reports two hypothetical scenarios with extremes of natural flow availability based on the presence and absence of routed upstream flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
