Abstract

A photograph kept at the Fondazione Federico Zeri records the existence of a painting by Stefano Torelli, representing Christ and the Samaritan woman, signed and dated 1774, of which so far just one fragment of the figure of Jesus was known (art market, 1992): the discovery offers the opportunity for an in-depth study of the late production of the Bolognese painter, which reveals his interests in the artistic culture of Louis XV's France, strengthened during the long period of career he spent at the court of Catherine II of Russia. The arrival of Étienne-Maurice Falconet in St. Petersburg in 1766 reawakened Torelli's attraction for the enchanting "art de plaire" developed in Paris by the great sculptor, already a collaborator in Sèvres of François Boucher, the "painter of graces".

Abstract

A photograph kept at the Fondazione Federico Zeri records the existence of a painting by Stefano Torelli, representing Christ and the Samaritan woman, signed and dated 1774, of which so far just one fragment of the figure of Jesus was known (art market, 1992): the discovery offers the opportunity for an in-depth study of the late production of the Bolognese painter, which reveals his interests in the artistic culture of Louis XV's France, strengthened during the long period of career he spent at the court of Catherine II of Russia. Una fotografia conservata presso la Fondazione Federico Zeri documenta un dipinto di Stefano Torelli con Cristo e la Samaritana, firmato e datato 1774, fino ad oggi noto solo nel frammento della figura di Gesù (mercato dell'antiquariato, 1992): il rinvenimento offre lo spunto per un approfondimento relativo alla tarda produzione del pittore bolognese, che ne rivela gli interessi volti alla cultura artistica della Francia di Luigi XV, rafforzatisi durante il lungo periodo di carriera trascorso alla corte di Caterina II di Russia. L'arrivo nel 1766 a San Pietroburgo di Étienne-Maurice Falconet risveglia l'attrazione di Torelli per la seduttiva art de plaire messa a punto a Parigi dal grande scultore, già collaboratore a Sèvres di François Boucher, il «pittore delle grazie»., INTRECCI d'arte, N. 8 (2019)
