1. Burdur İl Halk Kütüphanesinde Bulunan Türkiye Selçukluları ve Beylikler Dönemi Cilt Örnekleri.

Abstract

The subject of this study is to represent samples of manuscripts hardcovers from the age of Anatolian Seljuks and Principalities Period in the Burdur Provincial Public Library. The chosen examples are in the archives of the Regional Library of Manuscripts in Konya. Burdur has changed places multiple times before moving to its current location. Today, the region called as Pisidia Region is known as Lakes Region (Göller Yöresi). Excavations around the city have led to the conclusion that there have been settlements in this area for many ages. After the Malazgirt War, Turkmens have taken this region as a starting point for their invasions. At the beginning of the XIVth century, Hamidoğulları Beyliği has taken control of the region. In the XIXth century, it was administered by the Konya province. In the Konya Salnâmesi, written in 1305, it is mentioned that there were 34 tanneries (debbağhane) in Burdur. Even though there were 2312 manuscripts in the Burdur Provincial Public Library of in Turkish, Arabic and Persian, 679 manuscripts were damaged by a flood in 1975 and sent to the Suleymaniye Library in İstanbul to be repaired.The other 1687 manuscripts in Burdur were delivered to the Regional Library of Manuscripts in Konya. 4. Determinants of demand and price for best-selling novels in paperback in Japan.

Abstract

This study empirically investigates the factors affecting demand for best-selling novels in paperback, including the relationship with other formats (hardcover and e-book), and the determinants of prices by estimating the demand for paperbacks and price equations. The results show that paperbacks that have hardcover versions with large sales and that are original novels made into movies or television dramas tend to be best sellers. It is also found that expected demand is not a significant determinant of paperback price, whereas the number of pages is a major factor influencing price. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Surface mining accounts for most coal production in Indian geo-mining conditions compared with underground methods, whose implementations are in deeper coal reserves and for lower stripping ratio in a congested operating space. The bord-and-pillar method is the preferred underground method in India for reasons of flexibility and investment cost. While previous researchers conducted field investigations on intact overburden conditions, this study focuses on the strata control issues in a bord-and-pillar depillaring working under the influence of the dead-load condition of voluminous and fragmented softcover of overburden dump material. The modeling results helped in ascertaining the criticality of strata behavior and rib-pillar stability in actual mining conditions when compared with the conventional intact overburden. Abstract

The Book Industry Study Group and The Idea Logical Company carried out an online survey to capture publishers’ comments on how market conditions were changing and what they are doing differently as a result of the economic pressures in the consumer market. About 250 individuals responded to the online survey. Interviews were carried out of more than a dozen executives at large and small publishers and their accounts to get further insights. The goal was to identify what are the sales conditions for trade book publishers today and what publishers are doing to change sales and marketing and even editorial practices to accommodate changing times. Abstract

Bu çalışmanın konusunu Burdur İl Halk Kütüphanesine ait Anadolu Selçuklu ve Beylikler Dönemi özelliklerini taşıyan yazma eserlerin cilt kapaklarına ait örnekler oluşturmaktadır. Seçilen örnekler ise Konya Bölge Yazma Eserler Kütüphanesi-nin arşivinde mevcuttur. Burdur bugünkü yerleşim yerine ta-şınmadan önce birkaç kez yer değiştirmiştir. Pisidya Bölgesi di-ye anılan bu bölge günümüzde Göller Yöresi diye anılmaktadır. Şehrin yakınlarında yapılan kazılarda bu bölgede yerleşimin çok eski çağlardan beri devam ettiği sonucuna varılmıştır. Ma-lazgirt Savaşından sonra Türkmen akınları bu bölgede de baş-lamış, XIV. yüzyıl başlarında bölge Hamidoğulları Beyliğinin idaresine geçmiştir. XIX. Yüzyılda Konya vilayetine bağlanmış-tır, 1305 tarihli Konya Salnâmesinde Burdur da 34 debbağhane bulunduğu belirtilmektedir. Burdur İl Halk Kütüphanesinde Türkçe, Arapça, Farsça yazılmış 2312 adet yazma eser bulun-maktayken 1975 yılında sel baskını sonucu 679 adet eser tahrip olmuş, onarım yapılmak üzere İstanbul Süleymaniye Kütüpha-nesine gönderilmiştir. 11. Review Keyes, Roger S. 2006. Ehon: The artist and the book in Japan.

Abstract

This handsome tome is based on an exhibition of Japanese picture books held by the New York Public Library from October 2006 to February 2007. Despite the more contemporary connotations associated with the term ehon, this is not a catalogue of books for children. The collection is best described as a volume that traces the traditions of Japanese artists’ books. With the inclusion of two more recent works by non-Japanese (American and German) artists, the volume also features international entries that are currently ‘‘contribut[ing] to the living Japanese book tradition’’ (p. 313). Although it excludes neither children’s nor contemporary books altogether, given that the collection provides an introduction to both visual and literary artists, there is a notable absence of even one example from the multitude of innovative picture books available within the rich culture of children’s literature in Japan today. This aside, the volume is indeed a work of art in itself, with inclusions of stunning images from various types of books on every page showcasing the richness and depth of Japanese picture books through the ages. While one of the stated goals is to bring the largely unknown works from the collections held at the New York Public Library to public attention (p. 8), no exhibition catalogue can ever fully capture the breadth of the original display, although this one succeeds in providing insight into the essence and splendour of a diverse range of Japanese artists’ books.

14. Factors affecting the strength and openability of tight backed, adhesive bound, hardcover volumes

Abstract

The practice of tight backing adhesive bound, hard cover books has long been thought to enhance durability at the expense of openability. Tight backing is popular in a number of specialized binding markets, the most notable of which is textbook production. Yet despite their prevalence, there is a lack of information available about how the openability and durability characteristics of tight backed books are affected by variable factors in the production process. The purpose of this study was to evaluate three variables involved in the production of tight backed, adhesive bound, hardcover volumes. The three factors considered were bulk of the book block, surface area of adhesive application to the spine and paper stock. Analyses of durability was conducted using two pieces of testing apparatus, the Octagonal Tumbling Drum and the Universal Book Tester. Openability was measured using the Photocopy Openability Test. The statistical design utilized a blocked and replicated three way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), conducted at the 0.05 alpha level. Where the data led to the rejection of the null hypothesis, a Duncan Multiple Range Test was employed to isolate the source of the variation. The procedures determined that bulk had no effect on openability, but became a factor in durability when the book was subjected to severe abuse. Paper stock was deemed to have no significant effect on either durability or openability. With regard to adhesive treatment, an inverted relationship was found to exist between durability and openability. As adhesive coating increased in surface area, durability was enhanced at the expense of openability. This was found to be a non-linear relationship. Finally, it was found that if the proper materials and construction techniques were employed in book production, then bindings with high durability could be created despite effects of other variable factors.
