Introduction. Rabies virus infection can cause fatal brain disease in mammals. Any species is susceptible to infection. Any effort aimed at recognizing infected animals and performing first actions in the event of transmission is mandatory. Objective. To determine knowledge, attitudes, and practice profiles regarding rabies, or hydrophobia, in a municipality of Colombia, using a multiple correspondence analysis. Materials and methods. A descriptive observational study involving 71 pet owners was carried out in the municipality of Ibagué (Tolima). A questionnaire-based survey collected data on rabies knowledge, attitudes, practices, and demographic information. The survey was conducted between October and November 2021, and the data analysis involved descriptive statistics and multiple correspondence analysis. Results. The study revealed a commendable level of rabies awareness among the urban residents in the study municipality. However, there are causes of concern as they allow stray animals to enter their homes and are not aware of the importance of notifying dead animals. The respondents demonstrated a humane approach to bite management and emphasized the importance of wound cleaning. Additionally, they expressed a strong desire for more information to enhance their knowledge and awareness of the disease. Conclusion. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for improving rabies prevention efforts and promoting public health. Health education, evidence-based strategies, and community participation are essential for successful disease control and educational gaps addressing related to sociocultural factors.

Abstract Background This study aimed to explore the reasons adults in the general population, influenza risk groups (RGs) and health care workers (HCWs) in Norway give for their vaccination choices and whether these reasons vary between groups or over time in order to further improve influenza vaccination coverage. Methods Respondents of a nationally representative telephone survey conducted by Statistics Norway were asked “What was the most important reason why you did/did not get vaccinated?”. The question on influenza non-vaccination was included in 2016 and in 2020 to 2023 and the question on influenza vaccination in 2021 to 2023. Results The study included 9 705 individuals aged 18–79 years. Influenza vaccination coverage in the RGs increased from 20.6% in 2016 to 63.1% in 2022, before a reduction to 58.3% in 2023. Common reasons for non-vaccination were similar in all groups. The most cited reasons were “no need” for the vaccine and “no specific reason”, followed by “not recommended/offered the vaccine”, “worry about side effects” and “vaccine refusal”. The most frequent reasons for vaccination among the general population and RGs were protection against influenza and belonging to a RG, while the most frequent responses among HCWs were being offered the vaccine at work/work in health care, followed by a desire for protection against influenza. Receiving a vaccine recommendation from a health professional was mentioned in all groups. We also observed that the proportion reporting “no need” for the vaccine decreased over time, especially among HCWs, and that the proportions reporting vaccine refusal and worry about side effects as reasons for non-vaccination were temporarily reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions The general population and RGs cite protection against influenza as their primary incentive for vaccination, while HCWs mainly refer to their professional role or workplace vaccination. For non-vaccination we see a similar pattern in all groups, with “no need” and “no specific reason” as the main reasons. Of note, worry about side effects and vaccine refusal is as frequent among HCWs as in other groups. Continued efforts to maintain and increase vaccine confidence are needed.

Abstract Background To evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of nurses regarding non-pharmacologic therapies for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Methods This cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study enrolled nurses at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Beijing, China) between September 2022 and October 2022. Correlations between knowledge, attitude and practice scores were evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. Factors associated with knowledge, attitude and practice scores were identified by multivariable linear regression. Based on a cross-sectional questionnaire survey, this study designed a questionnaire according to the Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Dementia in China, and randomly selected nurses from Peking Union Medical College Hospital to fill in the questions through the Wen-Juan-Xing online platform from September 2022 to October 2022. Results The analysis included 210 nurses (202 females). Background: Although the benefits of breastfeeding are well known, it has been observed that some mothers abandon it, sometimes due to a lack of training in this area. It is unknown whether the level of breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes and practices increase after an educational intervention. Objective: To determine the knowledge, attitudes and breastfeeding practices of mothers of children under 1 year of age before and after an educational intervention. Material and methods: Quasi-experimental, analytical and longitudinal study. It included 216 mothers with children under 12 months of age; it excluded those with medical contraindications to breastfeeding; those that did not complete the surveys were eliminated. Sociodemographic data were collected. Medians of knowledge, attitudes and practices in breastfeeding before and after the educational intervention were compared with the Wilcoxon test. Results: High school education (54.6%), married marital status (48.7%), housewife occupation (66.2%) and worker socioeconomic level (61.6%) predominated. After the educational intervention, 213 mothers (98.6%) obtained a good level of knowledge, 216 (100%) acquired a good attitude, and 203 of them (94%) achieved good practices about breastfeeding. There were statistically significant differences between the medians of knowledge (p < 0.0001), attitudes (p < 0.0001) and practices (p = 0.014) before and after the educational intervention on breastfeeding, all of which increased their levels. Advanced gynecological cancer patients endure numerous symptoms resulting from both the disease itself and the treatments they undergo. This symptom burden significantly impacts the quality of life for both patients and their caregivers, as well as escalating medical costs. Palliative care presents a solution to alleviate these challenges. However, in Korea, there exists a low level of awareness regarding palliative care and consequently, a low utilization rate. Providing timely palliative care to advanced gynecological cancer patients in Korea necessitates a comprehensive understanding of their symptom burden, palliative care knowledge, and palliative care needs. However, no previous studies have addressed this critical issue. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of advanced gynecological cancer on palliative care needs in Korea according to patient demographic and clinical characteristics, symptom burden, and palliative care knowledge. This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study of data from 115 participants with stage III or IV gynecological cancer, collected through an online questionnaire. The main variables were symptom burden (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General), palliative care knowledge (Palliative Care Knowledge Scale), and palliative care needs (Problems and Needs in Palliative Care questionnaire-short version). Multiple hierarchical regression analyses were used to determine the relationships between variables. Palliative care needs were divided into perceived problems and requests for professional support. The most common perceived problems were financial problems, psychological issues, and physical symptoms, and the most frequent requests for professional support were financial problems, psychological issues, and the need for information. The perceived problem score increased with age, not having surgical experience, and significant symptom burden. Additionally, the requests for professional support score rose in cases of ovarian cancer, not having surgical history, substantial symptom burden, and limited palliative care knowledge. Advanced gynecological cancer patients have palliative care needs that differ according to patient characteristics, symptom burden, and palliative care knowledge. Identifying factors influencing palliative care needs can aid clinicians in identifying target groups in need of palliative care and providing them with professional palliative care. Objectives: To evaluate parent knowledge and belief changes following the MySmileBuddy (MSB) early childhood caries (ECC) intervention. Methods: Pre‐ and post‐intervention surveys were completed by 669 parents of children with visually‐evident ECC from among 977 participants in a 6–12‐month pragmatic community‐based caries management trial administered by community health workers (CHWs). Six domains of knowledge about caries and motivating and facilitating determinants were assessed via 26 survey items. Principal components analysis and reliability testing reduced dataset dimensionality. Parent and CHW characteristics were analyzed as potential moderators. Paired T‐tests measured pre‐to‐post‐intervention changes. Generalized estimating equations accounted for within‐participant correlation with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Twenty items consolidated into five factors (saliva, hygiene, diet, seriousness/susceptibility, and outcome expectations). Six additional items were evaluated individually. Positive post‐intervention changes (p < 0.0001) were observed across all factors and all but one individual item (tooth decay is very common). Greatest knowledge increases related to caries as a bacterial disease in two measures, the saliva factor and a single caries belief item tooth decay is an infectious disease (0.59 unit increase, 95% CI [0.55, 0.64] and 0.46 unit increase, 95% CI [0.4, 0.51], respectively), and in the value of fluoridated water over bottled (0.46 unit increase, 95% CI [0.39–0.53]). Most parents improved knowledge of ECC salivary (72%) and dietary risks (57%), and preventative hygiene behaviors (59%). Conclusions: MSB enhanced knowledge and beliefs about caries and confirmed hypothesized mediators of behavior change among parents of high‐risk children. Aims: To explore the effectiveness of interventions to enhance patient participation in shared decision‐making in wound care and tissue viability. Background: Caring for people living with a wound is complex due to interaction between wound healing, symptoms, psychological wellbeing and treatment effectiveness. To respond to this complexity, there has been recent emphasis on the importance of delivering patient centred wound care and shared decision‐making to personalise health care. However, little is known about the effectiveness of existing interventions to support shared decision‐making in wound care. Design: Systematic review of interventional studies to enhance shared decision‐making in wound care or tissue viability. This was reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines 2020. Methods: Interventional primary research studies published in English up to January 2023 were included. Screening, data extraction and quality appraisal were undertaken independently by two authors. Data Sources: Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trails (trials database), CINAHL, British Nursing Index (BNI), WorldCat (thesis database), Scopus and registries of ongoing studies (ISRCTN registry and clinicaltrials.gov). Results: 1063 abstracts were screened, and eight full‐text studies included. Findings indicate, interventions to support shared decision‐making are positively received. Goal or need setting components may assist knowledge transfer between patient and clinician, and could lower short term decisional conflict. However, generally findings within this study had very low certainty due to the inconsistencies in outcomes reported, and the variation and complexity of single and multiple interventions used. Conclusions: Future research on shared decision‐making interventions in wound care should include the involvement of stakeholders and programme theory to underpin the interventions developed to consider the complexity of interventions. Implications for the profession and patient care: Patients setting out their needs or goals and exploring patient questions are important and should be considered in clinical care. Age ≥ 40 years-old (β = 1.43, 95%CI = 0.35–2.51, P = 0.010 vs. ≤30 years-old) and bachelor's degree or higher (β = 1.11, 95%CI = 0.12–2.10, P = 0.028 vs. college degree or lower) were associated with higher practice score. Conclusions: Older age and higher education level were associated with higher knowledge, attitude and/or practice scores. Introduction: An important risk factor to achieve an adequate control of a chronic disease is the knowledge that the patient has about his disease. Several studies have shown a relationship between the type 2 diabetes mellitus patient’s knowledge and their treatment adherence or hemoglobin A1c levels. The objective of this article was to evaluate how much patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus know about their disease. Method: A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted following the 2020 Prisma statement on the databases: Medline, Scopus, CINAHL and PsychINFO. Randomized clinical trials, quasi-experimental, cross-sectional and control and case studies published until April 1 of 2024 were included. The screening, extraction, and the risk of bias assessment was done by 2 researchers independently. Results: 35 articles were included (29 cross-sectional, 4 randomized clinical trials and 2 quasi-experimental). The portion of patients with adequate knowledge of type 2 diabetes mellitus varies with the tool used to assess the knowledge, but in general, less than 45 % of the patients had adequate knowledge about their disease. Conclusions: This systematic review identified that most patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have a deficient knowledge of their disease, only 2 articles showed samples with adequate knowledge. ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the configuration of power relations among the multiprofessional team in the bedside round process in the hospital. Methods: Qualitative research with data analyzed through discourse analysis, based on Michel Foucault’s theoretical framework. From September to December 2022, we conducted interviews and field observations with the multiprofessional team at a hospital in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, as well as qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 37 professionals. Results: The participants pointed out that the experiences of the professionals involved in bedside rounds depend on how the physician conducts the process, and the physician-centered process makes it difficult for other professionals in the team to participate. Final considerations: The way hospitals organize bedside rounds does not promote knowledge articulation for their professionals. It hinders the circulation of power and harms interdisciplinary work in a process that maintains the physician as the main actor in clinical decisions.

ABSTRACT Objective To characterize laparoscopy teaching in Medical Residency Programs in Gynecology and Obstetrics in Brazil, and to evaluate preceptors’ characteristics in laparoscopy programs and map laparoscopic training practice scenarios. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional study evaluated questionnaire responses from coordinators of the Medical Residency Programs in Gynecology and Obstetrics from 2019 to 2021. Results The questionnaire was sent to 175 programs, and 90 responses were received (51.4%). From the 85 valid responses, it was noted that 67 programs had laparoscopic training. Of the 64 responses received regarding location, 32 replies (50%) indicated the Southeast of Brazil, particularly some country’s capitals. In 37.3% (n=25) of the cases, the program coordinator performed laparoscopy. The chief of the laparoscopy sector has advanced experience in most 52.5% (n=10) medical residency services; the preceptors also had advanced experience in 89.4% (n=59) of the services. Residents received laboratory training in 39.4% (n=26) of the services. In most cases, training was performed using a physical simulator. Of the 26 medical residency services with laparoscopy training outside the operating room, 80.8% (n=21) performed them as part of the curriculum, 61.5% (n=16) had a schedule for the same, and only 3.9% (n=1) were objectively evaluated. Conclusion Laparoscopy teaching in Brazil is heterogeneous, with only a few programs offering any training in laparoscopy. The preceptors had advanced experience and participated in laboratory and operating room training. Only a few programs have their own laboratories or training centers, and most teaching programs do not plan to set up training centers.

Objective: This study assesses the knowledge, practices, and attitudes of medical staff in intensive care units (ICUs) regarding oral hygiene care for critically ill, bedridden patients. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study included 65 employees from the Intensive Care Units of the Sestre Milosrdnice Clinical Hospital Centre (CHC SM) and the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the University Clinical Hospital Centre Zagreb (CHC ZG). A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess knowledge, methods, frequency, and attitudes towards oral care for mechanically ventilated patients. The data were examined through descriptive statistical methods, presented in terms of proportions (percentages). For the purpose of comparing the feedback across the two hospital centers and different educational backgrounds, the Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were employed. Migrant youth are vulnerable and face a risk of internalised disorders such as depression. This qualitative meta-synthesis explores migrant adolescents' experience of depression. 14 studies (7 qualitative studies and 7 case reports) were selected after a systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus and PsycInfo. Their quality was assessed with the Critical Appraisal Tool (CASP) for qualitative studies and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist for case reports. The analysis identified six themes describing the experience of depression among migrant adolescents: (1) the vulnerability factors underlying depressive distress, before, during and after migration; (2) the subjective experience of depression, combining symptoms associated with a form of depression common in the West with symptoms more common in other cultures; (3) two types of aetiological hypotheses to make sense of their distress; (4) attitudes adopted in response to distress; (5) experience of care, especially reasons discouraging investment in care; and (6) impairment of identity construction by breaks in cultural transmission and intergenerational conflicts. The threat of losing their connections both at the interpersonal (connection to family, peers and community) and intrapsychic levels (construction of identity) is inherently linked to migrant adolescents' experience of depression. We propose to adapt Brandenberger's 3C model (communication, continuity of care, and confidence) for the care of young migrants to promote a therapeutic alliance, foster construction of a coherent bicultural identity, and support the family. Objective: To investigate the status quo and analyze the influencing factors of the knowledge, attitude, and practice of pre-hospital emergency among caregivers for older adults. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 133 caregivers for older adults in Guangdong province, China, nursing homes were selected as survey participants from December 2021 to June 2022 via convenience sampling. All participants were administered a general information questionnaire and a Pre-Hospital Emergency Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Questionnaire. For data analysis, we used descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The scores on the knowledge, attitude, and practice dimensions were 24.65 ± 4.49, 24.52 ± 4.34, and 24.05 ± 4.67, respectively. Regression analysis showed that the age, professional skill level, and healthcare education experience of the caregivers were the main influencing factors of their pre-hospital emergency knowledge. Additionally, the presence/absence of direct participation in the pre-hospital emergency of the caregivers was the primary influencing factor of attitude, while education level and employment status were the factors mainly influencing pre-hospital emergency practice. Conclusion: Caregivers for older adults currently have a low-to-medium level of knowledge, attitude, and practice of pre-hospital emergency. Objective: To describe the professional approach to people with suicidal behavior in Primary Health Care and its associations with the sociodemographic, educational and occupational variables of health workers. Methods: Cross-sectional study of 192 health professionals from 20 Basic Health Units in a municipality in greater São Paulo. A questionnaire for sociodemographic, educational and occupational characterization was applied, as well as the instrument for Evaluating Professional's Assistance to People with Suicidal Behavior. The results were presented using measures of central tendency and dispersion, and parametric and non-parametric tests were used in the analysis, considering the nature of the variables. A significance level of 5% was adopted. Results: There was a predominance of females, average age of 43.27 years, higher education, and average working time of 10.71 years. The higher scores were reached in the Professional Sensibility and Knowledge/Abilities domains. Lower scores were obtained for Professional Experience and Organization of the Care Network, demonstrating frailty in the professional performance and in network coordination needed in the approach to suicidal behavior. Age, working time in the unit and the frequency of treatment of populations at risk for suicidal behavior were associated with scores in Professional Sensibility, Experience and Knowledge/Abilities. Conclusion: Sensibility, knowledge and abilities of Primary Care health professionals contribute to the approach to suicidal behavior, associated with occupational and educational characteristics. Professional experience and Organization of the care network reveal the weaknesses in the coordination necessary to approach suicidal behavior, indicating paths for training and work in health. Objective: To investigate the views and attitudes of nursing students, as patients or relatives, on healthcare professionals' hand hygiene behavior and patient participation hand hygiene campaign. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the nursing departments of the health and science faculties at two Turkish universities between 2021-2022. The study sample comprised 330 students. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The response rate of the questionnaire was 89.43%. Chi-square test was used in data analysis. Results: The mean age of students was 19.80±1.30 years, 76.1% were female, 50.9% stated they had received education regarding healthcare-associated infections (HAI). While 30.1% of students reported they performed hand hygiene "9-11 times" in their daily lives, 54.6% reported performing "12-15 times" in the hospital, and 96.4% of students expressed wondering if healthcare professionals performed hand hygiene before offering care during hospitalizations. Among students, 30.5% stated that reminders from patients and their relatives about performing hand hygiene before contact with patients would make them happy. There was a statistically significant difference between students' previous training in HAIs and hand hygiene as an important inpatient care (p<0.05). Conclusion: Nursing students had sufficient knowledge of hand hygiene and a positive attitude towards hand hygiene behaviors of healthcare professionals. Nursing students, such as patients and their relatives, can be included in hand hygiene campaigns for healthcare professionals, provided that the program steps are well planned. Objective: To validate a knowledge, attitude and practice survey on preventive measures against COVID-19 for penitentiary system staff based on environmental theory. Methods: This is a methodological study developed in four stages: conceptual structure establishment; instrument elaboration; content validity by judges; and appearance assessment by the target audience. The content of each item was validated for objectivity, clarity and relevance. Survey appearance was assessed regarding objective, organization, writing style and motivation. Content validity coefficient was used to assess agreement among judges and the target audience. Data were analyzed using gross distributions, percentages, position and dispersion measures. Cronbach's alpha index was used to analyze the consistency of judges' and target audience's assessments. Results: Regarding content and appearance, the assessed requirements achieved agreement greater than 0.9. In consistency assessment, a Cronbach's alpha index > 0.9 and > 0.7 was obtained for content and appearance, respectively, indicating that judges and target audiences tended to make similar assessments. Conclusion: The survey presented content and appearance validity for collecting data regarding knowledge, attitude and practice regarding COVID-19 prevention for penitentiary system staff, indicating that it could contribute to health education action planning and assessment. Resumen: La medicina ha evolucionado en positivo a lo largo de mi vida profesional. Es actualmente más resolutiva y respetuosa y menos invasiva que hace unas décadas. La prueba de ello es que la esperanza de vida ha aumentado y la salud general de la población es claramente mejor. No obstante, parece que hay cierta discordancia entre estos datos objetivos y la autopercepción de la salud por parte de una buena parte de la población. Se apuntan diversas posibles causas, entre las que destaca la progresiva tecnificación de la medicina a costa, frecuentemente, de una pérdida de valores humanísticos de la profesión. A partir de estas premisas se reflexiona acerca de posibles acciones encaminadas a paliar este problema. Abstract: Medicine has evolved positively throughout my professional life. It is currently more decisive and respectful, and less invasive than a few decades ago. The proof of this is that life expectancy has increased and the general health of the population is clearly better. However, there seems to be some discrepancy between these objective data and the self-perception of health by a large part of the population. Various possible causes are pointed out, among which stands out the progressive technification of medicine at the cost, frequently, of a loss of humanistic values of the profession. From these premises, we ponder on possible actions aimed at alleviating this problem.

Background: Despite increased global attention to early childhood development, children under 5 in low- and middle-income countries face heightened risks of poor developmental outcomes. In Indonesia, where innovative approaches to nurturing care are needed, video-based interventions show promise. Purpose: This study aimed to elevate maternal competence in parenting and contribute to the holistic development of children aged 0-3 years through video-based nurturing care education. Method: Non-equivalent quasi-experimental design with pre-post-test control groups was employed. This study used a consecutive sampling technique on 89 mothers with children 0-3 years old (intervention group = 40 and control group = 49). The intervention group was given health education using videos via a WhatsApp link, and the control group was given leaflets directly. Data was collected from May to August 2022, four weeks before the intervention (pre-test) and two weeks after the video and leaflets were given (post-test). The instrument was modified from the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) questionnaire developed by UNICEF. The effect of education was analyzed using Wilcoxon and independent t-test. Results: The group that received the intervention showed a notable and positive influence on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP levels) in contrast to the control group. This suggests the video-based intervention effectively enhanced participants' understanding, attitudes, and caregiving practices. Conclusion: The research emphasizes the positive outcomes of video-based nurturing care intervention for mothers with children aged 0-3 years. The intervention significantly improved maternal attitudes toward parenting, caregiving behaviors, and overall child development. These results emphasize the significance of employing video interventions to encourage effective nurturing care practices.

Objective To translate and culturally adapt the Information Needs in Cardiac Rehabilitation (INCR) questionnaire into Korean and perform psychometric validation. Methods The original English version of the INCR, in which patients are asked to rate the importance of 55 topics, was translated into Korean (INCR-K) and culturally adapted. The INCR-K was tested on 101 cardiac rehabilitation (CR) participants at Kangwon National University Hospital and Seoul National University Bundang Hospital in Korea. Structural validity was assessed using principal component analysis, and Cronbach’s alpha of the areas was computed. Criterion validity was assessed by comparing information needs according to CR duration and knowledge sufficiency according to receipt of education. Half of the participants were randomly selected for 1 month of re-testing to assess their responsiveness. Results Following cognitive debriefing, the number of items was reduced to 41 and ratings were added to assess participants’ sufficient knowledge of each item. The INCR-K structure comprised eight areas, each with sufficient internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha>0.7). Abstract Background Good knowledge of and attitudes toward hemodialysis and its complications might be expected to promote good practices and improve adherence. This study investigated, the knowledge, attitude, and practice of patients receiving hemodialysis regarding hemodialysis and its complications. Methods This cross-sectional study enrolled patients with uremia who were receiving hemodialysis at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (China) between January 9, 2023, and January 16, 2023. A questionnaire was designed that included the following dimensions: demographic/clinical information, knowledge, attitude, and practice. Background During the containment of COVID-19, the traditional face-to-face interventions conducted at the rehabilitation center were plagued by many limitations, while internet-based interventions can overcome the limitations of geographic location, working hours and transportation, with less medical costs. Objective To examine the effects of internet-based interventions on knowledge, attitude/belief and practice (KAP) toward rehabilitation exercises, physical activity (PA) level, and exercise compliance inpatients after PCI. Methods The subjects were 76 patients who received their first PCI in Department of Cardiology, Tangshan Gongren Hospital from November 2021 to June 2022. They were randomly and equally divided into two groups to receive either internet-based intervention with routine nursing (experimental group) or routine nursing (control group) . Abstract Background Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patients’ values and preferences. Little is known about knowledge, attitudes, and application of EBP among chiropractic students and trainees. Our aims were to (1) examine the feasibility of implementing a new journal club format within a Swiss university chiropractic healthcare education setting, and (2) assess the associations between the new journal club implementation and EBP characteristics among chiropractic students. Methods A before-and-after study was conducted through a newly implemented journal club with 5th and 6th year chiropractic students and postgraduate trainees between 1 February 2021 and 31 July 2021. The journal club was developed based on the “community of practice” and “team-based learning” conceptual frameworks. EBP knowledge, attitudes, personal application, and future use, were assessed with a validated questionnaire. We summarised participant characteristics using descriptive statistics, estimated before-and-after EBP total and subscale scores (i.e., knowledge, attitudes, personal application, and future use), and conducted an exploratory subgroup analysis based on journal club attendance (Group A: 3–5 sessions attended; Group B: ≤ 2 sessions attended). Results Among 32 eligible students and trainees, 29 participants (mean age 26 years; 79% women) were enrolled: 25 (78%) responded to the pre- and 29 (91%) to the post-assessment surveys. Most (80%) were chiropractic students and 20% were postgraduate trainees. Group A consisted of 12 (41%) and Group B of 17 (59%) participants, respectively. We found reasonable feasibility for the new journal club format and our findings were compatible with no difference in before-and-after EBP scores (median EBP total score before: 72.6 [IQR, 63.7–77.4], and after: 73.4 [IQR, 61.3–78.2]). Exploratory subgroup analyses based on journal club attendance were consistent with our overall findings. Conclusion Our study suggests that the newly implemented journal club and embedding chiropractic educational research within the journal club were feasible and acceptable. Abstract Background Different names for stroke might mislead physicians and emergency medical service workers. This study aimed to assess the different words for stroke in Brazil and both intended response and related symptoms associated with those names. Methods Cross-sectional study enrolling healthy individuals from urban areas in Northeast of Brazil for an open-ended survey. We presented a typical clinical case of a stroke (an elderly who had sudden onset of hemiparalysis and slurred speech) and asked “what is happening?”, “what would you do?” and “which other symptoms could happen in this condition?”. Resuts From 1,475 interviewed individuals, 1,220 (82,7%) recognized the scenario as a stroke. There were 3 words to correctly identify (based on correct intended response and spontaneously evoked associated symptoms) the stroke, which were “AVC” (acronym for cerebrovascular accident, in Portuguese), “derrame” (spillage) and “trombose” (thrombosis). There were significant differences among them concerning demographic, economic, educational and geographical aspects, but there was no difference according to the intended reaction among them. The most cited associated symptoms (excluding those present in the case) were impaired consciousness (10.6%), headache (8.9%) and dysesthesia (7.7%). “Aneurisma” (aneurism) was also cited, by 3 individuals. Conclusion There are at least three words for stroke in Portuguese (“AVC”, “derrame” and “trombose”); they were similar in terms of correct intended responses and spontaneously cited accompanying symptoms. Stroke campaigns should apply different names to reach a broader audience and to improve stroke recognition.

Background: The rising prevalence of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is cause for concern in the context of antimicrobial resistance and the potential health outcomes of untreated infections. Objective: The Community Awareness and Surveillance of Transmission (CAST) study sought sexual health service users’ views on reducing the prevalence of STIs. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with sexual health clinic attendees who had received a diagnosis of chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis in the previous six months. Participant comments relating to antibiotic post-exposure prophylaxis (APEP) and vaccination were inductively coded, then compared using comparative qualitative data analysis methods described by Miles and Huberman. Findings: Twenty-one participants with differing genders, ages, nationalities and sexual orientations, were interviewed. Participants across informant groups expressed concerns about APEP for STI prevention because of potential antimicrobial resistance and personal health impacts. Vaccination against bacterial STIs was more acceptable. Common factors mentioned in relation to both interventions included perception of individual STI risk over time, safety, effectiveness and accessibility. Conclusions: The views of sexual health service users support efforts to find alternatives to more frequent use of antibiotics, such as vaccinations against bacterial STIs, to reduce STI incidence and support antimicrobial stewardship.

ABSTRACT Objective To assess knowledge on sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) prevention among postpartum women who received prenatal care in public and private services in Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2019. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with postpartum women who gave birth in that municipality in 2019; the outcome was the indication of incorrect sleeping position (side/supine position) to prevent SIDS; the chi-square test was used to compare proportions between those who underwent prenatal care in public and private services. Results Among all 2,195 postpartum women, 67.7% (95%CI 65.7;69.6) were unaware of the position that prevents SIDS, 71.6% were public care service users; 77.8% of them feared choking/suffocation; 1.9% were informed about SIDS during prenatal care; doctors/nurses (70.5%) and grandmothers (65.1%) were influential regarding the baby’s sleeping position. Conclusion Most postpartum women were unaware of the sleeping position that prevents SIDS, especially those receiving care in the public sector; in general, this subject is not discussed in prenatal care.

Introduction. Lung cancer ranks as the second most common cancer among women and the leading cancer among men in Serbia. This study aimed to analyze smoking-related habits among participants in a lung cancer screening program. Material and Methods. The cross-sectional study was conducted between September 29, 2020 and June 9, 2023. Relevant database records containing information on socio-demographic characteristics of patients treated at the Primary Healthcare Center Novi Sad were analyzed. Socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, level of formal education), and smoking related habits, were obtained through an electronic questionnaire, specially designed for the purpose of the project. Results. Out of 2,460 respondents, 58.9% were females. The average age of the respondents was 63.7±6.8 years. The majority of the participants were smokers (83.3%). Nearly half (48.7%) considered quitting smoking in the previous six months, while 24% considered smoking cessation within the next 30 days. Participants frequently concerned about the risk of lung cancer development were more willing to quit smoking compared to those less concerned (33.3% vs. 16.2%, p<0.001). Conclusion. The study concludes that there is a low level of personal decisions to quit smoking, concern for one’s health and insufficient awareness of the risks of lung cancer development. Introduction: Pharmacists' knowledge and attitude toward Emergency Oral Contraception (EOC) can affect users' access to EOCs, especially where EOCs are provided by pharmacists without the need for prescriptions. We conducted a Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice (KAP) survey on Thai pharmacists to better understand KAP related to EOCs and the correlation among KAP components. Methods: An in-depth interview, GoogleTrend search, and Pantip.com search were conducted. The findings, together with data from a previously published systematic review and meta-analysis, were used to develop KAP survey questions which were distributed online. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and linear mixed model were used to investigate the correlation and association among KAP components. Results: The in-depth interview with pharmacists showed that sex and unwanted pregnancy are very sensitive topics in Thailand. Sex and EOC education should be provided by parents and healthcare professionals at a young age. This agreed with opinions from Thai internet users that sex literacy was generally low and sex education was not provided adequately. From the total of 421 survey responses, Thai pharmacists had average knowledge, poor attitude, and average practice related to EOCs (median score = 51.02%, 21.81%, and 60.0%, respectively). The correlations between KAP in pharmacists were weak (ρ = 0.107–0.525, p < 0.02). Pharmacists who rated themselves as having higher scores in knowledge and attitude also rated themselves higher in the practice score. However, the total scores describing the knowledge of or attitude toward EOCs were not associated with EOC practice scores. Conclusions: In Thai pharmacists, self-rating KAP scores overestimated total KAP scores. The correlation among KAP components was weak. Low vaccine uptake in South Tyrol, particularly for non-coronavirus and SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, poses a significant public health challenge in the northernmost province of Italy. This qualitative study conducted in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of vaccine-sceptical parents to examine the factors that contribute to their vaccination decisions. The ten participants' children had varied vaccination statuses, ranging from unvaccinated to partially vaccinated or vaccinated as late as possible. Only one adult participant received the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Using Grounded Theory analysis, the emergent meta-category of 'self-relatedness' was identified, highlighting the importance of individual experiences and the social context. The study found that participants' social circles consisted of individuals with similar vaccination attitudes, often characterized by a shared affinity for nature. Although they accepted individuals with different views, they remained uninfluenced. Participants perceived healthcare professionals as one-sided and uncritical, expressing distrust toward state orders. They believed that parents should be responsible for their children's well-being rather than the state. Distrust in the state and healthcare system, exacerbated by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, was rooted in negative experiences. In contrast, the participants had positive experiences with natural healing, homeopathy, and trusting the natural course of events. They perceived themselves as tolerant, non-radical, curious, health-conscious, yet critical and questioning. Participants resisted coercion, fear-mongering, and state sanctions and sought alternatives to mandatory vaccination. To address the complex social and behavioural factors underlying vaccination refusal, this study suggests that vaccination advocates, policymakers, and information providers should engage in appreciative, personal, and well-founded information exchanges with vaccine-hesitant individuals. Broad and comprehensible information dissemination, flexibility, and freedom of decision are essential for increasing informed decision making. Abstract Background Residents of informal settlements in Sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) are vulnerable to the health impacts of climate change. Little is known about the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of inhabitants of informal settlements in SSA regarding climate change and its health impacts. The aim of this study was to investigate how inhabitants of an informal settlement in SSA experience climate change and its health impacts and assess related knowledge, attitudes and practices. The study was conducted in Mukuru informal settlement in Nairobi City County, Kenya. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in September 2021 using a structured, semi-closed KAP questionnaire. Inclusion criteria were ≥ 18 years of age and living in one of the three main sections in Mukuru: Kwa Njenga, Kwa Reuben or Viwandani. By spinning a pen at the geographic centre of each section, a random direction was selected. Then, in every second household one individual was interviewed, creating a representative mix of ages and genders of the local community. To assess participant characteristics associated with climate change knowledge multivariable logistic regression was used. Thematic content analysis was performed for qualitative responses. Results Out of 402 study participants, 76.4% (n = 307) had heard of climate change before the interview, 90.8% (n = 365) reported that climate change was affecting their community, and 92.6% (n = 372) were concerned with the health-related impact of climate change. Having lived in Mukuru for more than 10 years and living in a dwelling close to the riverside were factors significantly associated with having heard of climate change before (aOR 3.1, 95%CI 1.7 – 5.8 and aOR 2.6, 95%CI 1.1 – 6.1, respectively) and experiencing a climate change related impact on the community (aOR 10.7, 95%CI 4.0 – 28.4 and aOR 7.7; 95%CI 1.7 – 34.0, respectively). Chronic respiratory conditions, vector-borne diseases, including infectious diarrhoea, malnutrition and cardiovascular diseases were identified by respondents as climate related health risks. Conclusions Most respondents were knowledgeable about climate change and were experiencing its (health-related) impact on their community. This study provides insights which may prove useful for policy makers, intervention planners and researchers to work on locally adapted mitigation and adaption strategies.

Background/Aim. The competence of healthcare workers (HCWs) to advocate the importance of immunization to persons who are hesitant about vaccines is extremely important. The aim of this study was to evaluate the final-year medical students’ competencies related to immunization challenges in their practice using their knowledge, attitudes, and study practices. Methods. The cross-sectional study was conducted among 442 final-year students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, Serbia. The instrument used for data collection was an anonymous questionnaire consisting of 38 questions. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the predictive value of different factors in immunization knowledge among medical students. Results. The median total knowledge score with the interquartile range was 7 ± 3.00 out of 13. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the knowledge score and the grade point average (GPA) (r = 0.207, p < 0.001). Thirty-five percent of students felt moderately capable of conducting work regarding vaccination without supervision. Furthermore, 92.1% of students considered that additional training and information channels about immunization needed to be implemented in curricula for HCWs. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis showed that gender, age, GPA, study duration, self-confidence regarding immunization knowledge, the flu, and hepatitis B vaccination status explained a total of 36% of the variance in the immunization knowledge score. Less than two-thirds of students believed they had enough knowledge to reassure a person hesitant about immunization. Conclusion. The results of our study showed an average level of knowledge about immunization among final-year medical students. As less than two-thirds of students believe that they have enough knowledge to reassure a hesitant person, there is a need for a better understanding and improving the parts of the curricula of medical faculties regarding immunization.

Objective. To document Grenadian women’s knowledge about cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, as well as their attitudes towards primary cervical cancer screening methods. Methods. In this qualitative study, we used focus groups in Grenada to gather information concerning women’s knowledge about, attitudes towards and perceptions of screening for cervical cancer and general knowledge about HPV. Ten focus groups comprising 73 participants representing 5 of the 6 parishes in Grenada were conducted with women aged 19–59. Participants were asked about pelvic exams, Pap smears, HPV, reasons for seeking or avoiding cervical cancer screening and how different modalities of testing might affect their decision-making. Responses were then coded and organized into common themes. Results. While many respondents had heard of HPV, far fewer knew about its causative role in cervical cancer, how to prevent HPV infection or testing for the high-risk HPV types that cause almost all cases of cervical cancer. Many participants were aware that cervical cancer screening was beneficial, but numerous barriers to obtaining that screening were noted, including concerns about privacy and stigma, potential discomfort, and the cost and inconvenience involved. Conclusions. Our findings have implications for future cervical cancer screening efforts in Grenada. Central to these efforts should be a focus on educating Grenadians about the role of HPV infection in cervical cancer and the importance of early detection through screening. In addition, addressing issues of stigma and privacy are key to eliminating cervical cancer in Grenada.

Abstract Background Biologic and targeted synthetic disease modifying agents (b/tsDMARDs) have broadened the treatment landscape for autoimmune diseases particularly in patients refractory to conventional DMARDs. More recently, the introduction of biosimilars has reduced the price of bDMARDs, potentially improving accessibility. Though efficacy and safety have been described, patient attitudes to b/tsDMARDs are not well-understood. We aim to investigate patients’ beliefs about biologic and biosimilar therapy, and the factors influencing their perceptions. Methods Patient consumer groups (Arthritis Australia, Crohn’s and Colitis Australia) assisted in advertising an online questionnaire for people with a self-reported diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis (IA) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The questionnaire incorporated the Belief about Medicines Questionnaire (BMQ) and the single-item literacy screener (SILS). Sources and favourability of biologic/biosimilar information were analysed, using the chi-square and a non-parametric trend test for unordered and ordered categorical variables respectively, comparing respondents with IA and IBD. Results Eight hundred and thirty eight people (686–IA, 144–IBD, 8 both) responded. 658 (79%) used b/tsDMARDs. The BMQ demonstrated high necessity belief (median 4.2) with moderate concerns (median 2.8) about biologics. 95% of respondents obtained medication information from specialists though most used multiple sources (median 4). The most positive resources were specialists and specialist nurses. 73/141 (52%) respondents with IBD obtained information from specialist nurses compared with 202/685 (29%) with IA (p = 0.012). Respondents with limited reading ability on SILS were more likely to discuss information with a general practitioner or pharmacist. Younger respondents and those with higher BMQ concern scores more frequently consulted less reliable sources (e.g. social media). 502 respondents (60%) answered the biosimilar questions. Only 23 (4.6%) reported currently using a biosimilar and 336 (66.9%) were unsure if biosimilars were available in Australia. Specialist recommendation was the most frequent factor that would influence a patient to change from originator to biosimilar (352/495, 71.1%). Conclusions There is a high level of trust in specialists’ recommendations about b/tsDMARDs, although most people also utilise additional information sources. Contextual factors influencing resource selection include age, reading ability and degree of concern about medicines. People with IA and IBD have similar attitudes though those with IBD more frequently access specialist nurse advice.

Introduction. Colon cancer is a public health problem due to its frequency. According to the number of diagnosed cases, it is the third most common malignant tumor in the world in people of both sexes, and even the second most common in terms of mortality. The incidence is higher in developed regions, although increase is recorded in the developing countries due to changes in the living habits of the population. Operation is the method of choice in the disease treatment, and the performance of colostomy affects the patient’s life, although it significantly prolongs it. Material and Methods. Literature review available in scientific databases was used as material in order to present significant results of the latest existing research in the selected area. Results. A wide range of studies conducted to observe the predictive factors, which in different ways affect the quality of life of patients with colostomy, confirm that the psychological aspects of the newly created situation have the most prominent importance in further life. In addition to possible problems with nutrition, stoma care, dressing, physical activity, professional and sexual life, and travel, it seems that coping with stress and changes in physical appearance are the fields on which the most work should be directed by both the family and the patient, as well as members of the medical team. Conclusion. The quality of life of people with colostomy is interference of medical and rehabilitation treatment, and it depends on the patient’s willingness to cooperate during the entire treatment, care and rehabilitation process. All reference bodies and institutions should undertake activities to design a comprehensive strategy for improving life quality, primarily through the prism of improving one’s own body image, functional status, psychological and social support. ABSTRACT Objectives: to assess the effectiveness of a group and telephone educational intervention with seropositive women about knowledge about HIV sexual transmission prevention. Methods: a quasi-experimental before-and-after study, carried out with 151 women living with HIV in a Specialized Care Service in a Brazilian capital. The educational intervention was carried out in three moments, with the assessment being carried out before the first and after the last moment. Results: 97.4% of study participants were cisgender women aged between 18 and 58 years; 55.6% considered themselves brown; and 32.5% of interviewees had elementary school. Screening for early esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), including screening for its precursor Barrett’s esophagus (BE), has the potential to reduce EAC-related mortality and morbidity. This literature review aimed to explore professionals’ views on the justification for EAC screening. A systematic search of Ovid Medline, EMBASE, and PsycInfo, from January 1, 2000 to September 22, 2022, identified 5 original studies and 63 expert opinion articles reporting professionals’ perspectives on EAC screening. Included articles were qualitatively analyzed using the framework method, which was deductively led by modernized screening principles. The analyses showed that many professionals are optimistic about technological advancements in BE detection and treatment. However, views on whether the societal burden of EAC merits screening were contradictory. In addition, knowledge of the long-term benefits and risks of EAC screening is still considered insufficient. There is no consensus on who to screen, how often to screen, which screening test to use, and how to manage non-dysplastic BE. Professionals further point out the need to develop technology that facilitates automated test sample processing and public education strategies that avoid causing disproportionately high cancer worry and social stigma. In conclusion, modernized screening principles are currently insufficiently fulfilled to justify widespread screening for EAC. Results from future clinical screening trials and risk prediction modeling studies may shift professionals’ thoughts regarding justification for EAC screening.

Abstract Background Several preconception exposures have been associated with adverse pregnancy, birth and postpartum outcomes. However, few studies have investigated women’s knowledge of and attitudes towards preconception health, and the acceptability of potential intervention methods. Methods Seven primary care centres in the West of England posted questionnaires to 4330 female patients aged 18 to 48 years. Without providing examples, we asked women to list maternal preconception exposures that might affect infant and maternal outcomes, and assessed their knowledge of nine literature-derived risk factors. Attitudes towards preconception health (interest, intentions, self-efficacy and perceived awareness and importance) and the acceptability of intervention delivery methods were also assessed. Multivariable multilevel regression examined participant characteristics associated with these outcomes. Results Of those who received questionnaires, 835 (19.3%) responded. Women were most aware of the preconception risk factors of diet (86.0%) and physical activity (79.2%). Few were aware of weight (40.1%), folic acid (32.9%), abuse (6.3%), advanced age (5.9%) and interpregnancy intervals (0.2%), and none mentioned interpregnancy weight change or excess iron intake. After adjusting for demographic and reproductive covariates, women aged 18–24-years (compared to 40–48-year-olds) and nulligravid women were less aware of the benefit of preconception folic acid supplementation (adjusted odds ratios (aOR) for age: 4.30 [2.10–8.80], gravidity: aOR 2.48 [1.70–3.62]). Younger women were more interested in learning more about preconception health (aOR 0.37 [0.21–0.63]) but nulligravid women were less interested in this (aOR 1.79 [1.30–2.46]). Women with the lowest household incomes (versus the highest) were less aware of preconception weight as a risk factor (aOR: 3.11 [1.65–5.84]) and rated the importance of preconception health lower (aOR 3.38 [1.90–6.00]). The most acceptable information delivery methods were websites/apps (99.5%), printed healthcare materials (98.6%), family/partners (96.3%), schools (94.4%), television (91.9%), pregnancy tests (91.0%) and doctors, midwives and nurses (86.8–97.0%). Dentists (23.9%) and hairdressers/beauticians (18.1%) were the least acceptable. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate a need to promote awareness of preconception risk factors and motivation for preconception health changes, particularly amongst younger and nulligravid women and women with lower incomes. Interventions to improve preconception health should focus on communication from healthcare professionals, schools, family members, and digital media.

Abstract Background To our knowledge, there is currently no psychometrically validated Hungarian scale to evaluate nurses’ knowledge about infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. Thus, we aim in this study to assess the validity and reliability of the infection control standardized questionnaire Hungarian version (ICSQ-H). Methods A cross-sectional, multisite study was conducted among 591 nurses in Hungary. The original ICSQ included 25 questions. First, the questionnaire was translated into Hungarian. Then, content validity was assessed by a committee of four specialists. This was done by calculating the item content validity index and scale content validity index. Afterward, structural validity was evaluated in a two-step process using principal component analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. The goodness of fit for the model was measured through fit indices. Convergent validity was assessed by calculating the average variance extracted. Additionally, discriminant validity was evaluated by computing the Spearman correlation coefficient between the factors. Finally, the interitem correlations, the corrected item-total correlations, and the internal consistency were calculated. Results The content validity of the questionnaire was established with 23 items. The final four-factor ICSQ-H including 10 items showed a good fit model. Convergent validity was met except for the alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) factor, while discriminant validity was met for all factors. The interitem correlations and the corrected item-total correlations were met for all factors, but the internal consistency of ABHR was unsatisfactory due to the low number of items. Conclusions The results did not support the original three-factor structure of the ICSQ. However, the four-factor ICSQ-H demonstrated an adequate degree of good fit and was found to be reliable. Based on our findings, we believe that the ICSQ-H could pave the way for more research regarding nurses’ IPC knowledge to be conducted in Hungary. Nevertheless, its validation among other healthcare workers is important to tailor effective interventions to enhance knowledge and awareness.
