Clusters were identified using an exploratory non-hierarchical analysis (k-means), and the odds ratios of the occurrence of variables were estimated by multinomial logistic regression.36% were classified as lonely/not isolated, 19.4% as lonely/isolated, and 44.5% as not lonely/not isolated. The odds of belonging to the ‘lonely/not isolated’ cluster were lower for males and higher for those with more depressive symptoms, lower life satisfaction and quality of life scores, and poor mobility. The odds of being in the ‘lonely/isolated’ cluster were higher for individuals with more depressive symptoms, aged 80 years or older, and with lower levels of social participation, education, expectations of care, life satisfaction, and perceived quality of life.Measures aimed at reducing social isolation and loneliness should be tailored to the characteristics of each cluster. The ‘lonely/isolated’ cluster would benefit from measures that reduce socioeconomic disadvantages throughout life and create opportunities for quality social interaction in old age. The aim of the present study was to describe the conceptual and operational definitions of the frailty syndrome recommended by the Brazilian Consensus on Frailty in Older People. In 2015, a task force consisting of Brazilian specialists on human aging conducted a bibliographical review on frailty among older people in Brazil and established a consensus on the main findings through periodic meetings. A total of 72 articles were included in the analysis, comprising one systematic review, two conceptual discussions, two methodological descriptions, four longitudinal studies focusing on mortality and worsening of the frailty profile, eight cross-cultural adaptation studies, and 55 cross-sectional or prevalence studies. Forty-five studies (62.5%) used the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) frailty scale, of which seven (15.2%) used unadjusted cut-off points for their samples and 17 (36.9%) modified at least one of the five items of the instrument. The prevalence of frailty varied between 6.7 and 74.1%. When the CHS frailty scale was used, the wide range of prevalence — from 8 to 49.3% — depended on the cut-off points used to classify changes in gait speed and handgrip strength, as well as the research setting. The studies were based on four major conceptual models of frailty. Frailty in older people represents a state of physiological vulnerability and should not be confused with disabilities or multi-morbidities. In the Brazilian population, the prevalence of frailty has not yet been adequately estimated, and the cut-off points of the items of the frailty scales should be adapted to the parameters of this population.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hyponatremia in older patients during hospital stay and determine its association with polypharmacy, length of hospital stay, and mortality. METHOD: This was an observational, analytical, cross-sectional study of patients aged 65 years and older during hospitalization. The first sodium sample requested by the physician was considered for analysis. Hyponatremia was classified according to severity as mild (130–135 mEq/L), moderate (125–129 mEq/L), or severe (< 125 mEq/L) and according to osmolarity as isotonic (275–295 mOsm/L), hypotonic (< 275 mOsm/L), or hypertonic (> 295 mOsm/L). The χ2 test and oneway analysis of variance followed by Tukey’s post hoc test were used to analyze length of hospital stay between the groups (normonatremia and mild, moderate, and severe hyponatremia). The χ2 test was also used to compare mortality between the groups. RESULTS: We included 174 patients, with a mean age of 74 (SD, 7; range, 65–95) years; 52.3% were men. Overall, 44.8% had normonatremia, 37.8% had mild hyponatremia, 9.2% had moderate hyponatremia, and 8.0% had severe hyponatremia. Increased hospital stay was observed in patients with hyponatremia, being longer in those with severe hyponatremia. Polypharmacy occurred in 39.3% of patients. Of patients with severe hyponatremia, 71.4% had polypharmacy (p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Hospitalized older adults showed a high rate of hyponatremia and an important association with polypharmacy and prolonged hospital stay.

BACKGROUND: Existing instruments for the diagnosis of frailty are limited by their focus on mobility evaluation, failure to incorporate comorbidities, and dichotomous classification of patients as frail or non-frail, which hinders adequate identification of frail older adults. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frailty profile of outpatients seen at a secondary geriatric care service in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, as measured by the Visual Scale of Frailty, and describe the five levels of health status proposed by this instrument in terms of function, disabilities, and comorbidities. METHODS: The medical records of patients who attended the clinic between February 2011 and February 2014 were evaluated, and the patients classified in accordance with the Visual Scale of Frailty. Continuous variables were analyzed by ANOVA or the Kruskal-Wallis test, and categorical variables, by the χ2 test. Analyses were performed in SPSS Version 19.0. RESULTS: A total of 813 medical records were evaluated. Among these patients, 5.2% were considered robust, 31% at risk of frailty, 24.6% as frail, 34.8% as highly complex frail, and 4.4% as frail individuals in the final stage of life. Analysis of the health status categories demonstrated an association between these categories, greater functional impairment, and greater presence of disabilities and comorbidities. CONCLUSION: The Visual Scale of Frailty is a useful tool in assessing the health status of older adults and indicated a high prevalence of frailty in the studied population.

The objective of this study was to present the main factors responsible for falls in older adults, measures for assessing risk, and prevention strategies. This is a qualitative study, developed from the international and national gerontology literature. Two models were created, one including the main fall risk factors and another including common assessment and prevention measures. Five types of intervention procedures were identified: educational, physical, cognitive, exergames and exercise programs. It was concluded that early identification of fall risk is important. The most appropriate intervention methodologies for preventing falls in the elderly include periodic dual and multi-task physical training followed by educational measures. In addition, exercise programs and exergames are effective in preventing falls, especially in congregate housing.

INTRODUCTION: Delirium is an acute change in cognition and attention, common in the postoperative period in older patients, associated with increased costs and longer hospital stay. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency, risk factors, and influence of postoperative delirium in older patients submitted to elective noncardiac surgery. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional, observational study of older adults (65 years or older) hospitalized for elective noncardiac surgery. During the immediate preoperative period (24 hours), risk factors such as age, sex, cognition (MiniCog), functional status (Katz and Timed Up and Go), medications, and clinical aspects were evaluated. Delirium, in the immediate postoperative period (up to 72 hours), was evaluated using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM). RESULTS: A total of 83 patients were included in the study. Of these, 44.6% (n = 37) had undergone orthopedic surgery, 42.16% (n = 35), general surgery, and 13.3% (n = 11), urological surgery. Most participants were men (53%), with a mean age of 73 (65–94) years. Overall, 9.6% (n = 8) had postoperative delirium: 6% of the hyperactive subtype (n = 5), 2.4% of the hypoactive subtype (n = 2), and 1.2% of the mixed subtype (n = 1). These patients were older (p = 0.02), had greater cognitive decline (p = 0.01), anemia (p = 0.04), and prolonged hospital stay (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Postoperative delirium was more commonly observed in the older old with cognitive decline and anemia, with an impact on hospital length of stay, highlighting the importance of a more comprehensive preventive evaluation in the preoperative period.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate self-rated health and to identify its relationship with functional capacity, objective measures of muscle strength, and mobility in a sample of community-dwelling elderly adults. METHOD: A cross-sectional, population-based study using data from the "Fragility Study on Brazilian Elderly" (Fibra) electronic database, carried out between 2008 and 2009, in which 2,558 community-dwelling elderly were recruited. The dependent variable was self-rated health compared with peers of the same age, among the elderly. The odd ratios were adjusted for sociodemographic and health variables and were estimated through multinomial logistic regression. The analyses were carried out using the program Stata 14.0. RESULTS: The average age of the elderly participants was 72.3 years old (SD ± 5.5) and 65.6% of them were women. When comparing with someone of the same age, 70.2% of the participants rated their health as better than the other's; 23.4% of them rated it as equal, and 6.4% of the elderly rated it as worse. The adjusted regression model showed that the odd ratios were more important when rating health as worse among the elderly participants who were dependent on instrumental activities (OR = 2.19; 95%CI 1.22–3.92) and had weaker grip strength (OR = 0.96; 95%CI 0.93–0.99). Better health rating showed a statistically significant difference related to speed gait (OR = 0.88; 95%CI 0.81–0.94). CONCLUSION: We found associations between the self-rated health and instrumental activities of daily living, gait velocity, and grip strength. These results reinforce functionality as an important health predictor and broaden self-rated health approachs including social comparison criteria.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluating the fine motor skills (M¹) degree in a group of independent elders, checking its possible association with the weekly practice of physical activities. METHODS: 139 independent elders of both genders, aged 60 and older, who responded to a survey about their weekly practice of physical activities and then, later on were subjected to M¹ tests according to EMTI, which final scores determine each individual's M¹. The elderly were categorized into two groups: 60-70 years-old and above 70 years-old. RESULTS: the female gender was predominant in the sample. Most of the elders (46.56%) showed a M¹ Mean Normal, followed by Inferior levels (29.50%) and Superior levels (23.74%). About 6.5% of the elders do not practice any physical activity, 5% practice it once a week, 53% twice a week and 35.5% more than two times per week. It could be observed that those practicing physical activity at least three times a week have better score on the M¹ test (Mann-Whitney Test; p = 0.039). On the other hand, the group older than 70 years had a worse performance (Mann-Whitney Test, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: The M¹ Normal Medium was the score achieved with the highest percentage in the two age groups analyzed, being the group older than 70 years the one that presented worse performance. In addition, sedentary elderly or those who report having physical activity only once a week also had the worst test results.

The purpose of this study was to understand the different meanings attributed by older adults to old age and their expectations for the future. This was a qualitative descriptive study of 34 older adults involved in senior activities in the urban area of Pau dos Ferros, a municipality located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern Brazil. Using a semi-structured interview, the participants were asked about their perceptions of old age and expectations for the future. Two thematic categories emerged throughout the analysis process: ‘Meanings attributed to old age’ and ‘Expectations for the future’. The results showed that older adults’ perceptions of old age are constantly influenced by the individual experiences accumulated over a lifetime, and that the triad of old age, health, and disease, in the majority of cases, is the factor that most influences the responses. It is our hope that the present study will contribute to the development of further studies that include older adults’ perceptions of their own aging process, and that these studies will provide knowledge that will translate into benefits for older adults, whether they participate or not in group-based senior activities.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between active aging and social determinants of health in older people living in the catchment area of a primary health care facility. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess exposure variables of the schematic model by Dahlgren and Whitehead; the outcome variable active aging was created by means of latent class analysis. Participants were categorized as highly, moderately, and minimally active. Data analysis was performed using a forward multinomial regression model. RESULTS: Overall, 155 elderly people participated in the study, most of them classified as highly active. Older subjects had a higher chance for being minimally active (OR = 5.72) and moderately active (OR = 3.27). Lack of a family life (OR = 3.90) and education level of 4 years or less (OR = 2.90) were shown to be risk factors for moderate levels of active aging. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that advanced age, lack of family life, and an education level of 4 years or less were associated with a higher chance for elderly attending Family Health Strategy units to present low levels of active aging. It is suggested that these factors should be taken into account when directing public policies aimed at active aging.

OBJECTIVE: In Brazil, 70% of older adults have at least one chronic disease and, of these, 60% use more than four medications regularly, characterizing polypharmacy. Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are used by 40% of this population. Both polypharmacy and PIM use are associated with negative outcomes, such as increased frequency of drug interactions, falls, frailty, malnutrition, and in some cases, death. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection of all older patients admitted for clinical reasons to a tertiary care hospital in Brazil from March 2015 to February 2016. We evaluated patients for the presence of polypharmacy and PIM use, correlating these findings with other variables of interest. RESULTS: The medical records of 456 patients were analyzed. Mean patient age was 83 years, and 71.3% were women. The mean Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was 2.38, and dementia was the most prevalent comorbidity (36.6%). Polypharmacy was present in 56.5% of patients, and 46.4% of them used at least one PIM. Antipsychotics were the most frequently used PIM (46.2%), followed by benzodiazepines (33.0%). Drug interactions were detected in 53.5% of patients. The presence of polypharmacy was associated with the use of PIMs (p < 0.001). Additionally, both polypharmacy and PIM use were associated with drug interactions (p < 0.01), poorer functional status (p < 0.01), and higher CCI (p = 0.015). CONCLUSION: In this study population, the prevalence of polypharmacy was 56.5%, and 46.5% of cases included the use of PIMs. Both conditions were associated with drug interactions, poorer functional status, and higher CCI.

This monograph reports the results of a three-year multiple case study of nine knowledge-to-action (KTA) initiatives mobilized in communities of practice (C0Ps) operating in Ontario's seniors' health system. A multiple case study design was used to conduct nine case studies through a combination of case study and ethnographic methods. Deductive analytical methods were used to answer two broad research questions about the KTA processes mobilized through the CoPs, and about the roles played by CoP members and other stakeholders. Inductive analytical methods were used to reveal the patterns of interaction characteristic of the CoPs. These CoPs acted as flexible and temporary social forms with specific characteristics and processes allowing them to integrate explicit and tacit knowledge to resolve the unique contextual challenges of health practices. Our findings suggest that these CoPs often developed a double-loop learning process that is well suited to responding to adaptive challenges and wicked problems. Conclusions from this qualitative study are not generalizable to all situations and contexts. Findings suggest that the concept of "knowledge-to-action" be supplemented by a concept of "action-to-knowledge" that recognizes that important initiatives are often incubated in the action of health care delivery when dedicated professionals come together to tackle intractable issues. This is the first multiple case study of CoPs in the Canadian health system. The study shows that CoPs can act as the junction for the rational epistemology of science and the narrative epistemology of practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is devoted to understanding a healthy lifestyle in old age, significant limitations and differences that arise with age and redefine many basic ideas about health. The article begins by identifying basic ideas about healthy aging, which are questioned and clarified through an analytical analysis of dense interviews (the author’s terminology for qualitative interviews, the closest analogue of which in the Russian-speaking environment is in-depth interviews) with old people. Field work took place in the Republic of Khakassia in three cities: Abakan, Chernogorsk and Abaza. A total of 12 interviews were conducted with older people receiving long-term care services. Based on the received narratives, five conditions accompanying aging were identified: living in illness; accepting limitations; loneliness; support and withdrawal from others; emotional depression. Through a critical understanding of the life world of aging, four signs of a healthy lifestyle in old age are identified: attention to the old man, the need for the old man, the value of aging and the presence of a goal in life for the old man. Modern social policy in Russia is based on only one component of “attention to the elderly” (although other components are also declared by law), through the organization of long-term care, the development and implementation of rehabilitation means, and the creation of an accessible environment. But the most important elements remain the formation of the need for the old man among significant loved ones (relatives and others), joint agreement, the formation of goal-setting in the old man in life and the promotion of the value of aging as such. The article proposes an agenda for further research to more accurately shape domestic policies in the field of aging.

The aging population has brought increased attention to the urgent need to address social isolation and health risks among the elderly. While previous research has established the positive effects of parks in promoting social interaction and health among older adults, further investigation is required to understand the complex relationships between perceptions of the park environment, social interaction, and elderly health. In this study, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine these relationships, using nine parks in Wuhan as a case study. The findings indicate that social interaction serves as a complete mediator between perceptions of the park environment and elderly health (path coefficients: park environment on social interaction = 0.45, social interaction on health = 0.46, and indirect effect = 0.182). Furthermore, the results of the multi-group SEM analysis revealed that the mediating effect was moderated by the pattern of social interaction (the difference test: the friend companionship group vs. the family companionship group (Z = 1.965 > 1.96)). Notably, family companionship had a significantly stronger positive impact on the health of older adults compared to friend companionship. These findings contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms through which urban parks support the physical and mental well-being of the elderly and provide a scientific foundation for optimizing urban park environments. Objective: Identify the factors associated with the symptoms of depression in people with heart failure. Method: Cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted with individuals diagnosed with heart failure in follow-up at the cardiology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in the municipality of João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. The data was collected from December 2021 to May 2022 using a sociodemographic and clinical characterization instrument and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Analysis by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Of the 89 participants, 32.6% reported symptoms of depression. ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the association between family characteristics concerning partners and children and loneliness among Brazilians aged 50 and over, taking into account both the occurrence of loneliness and its severity levels. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from 7,163 participants in the second wave of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging, a nationally representative study conducted in 2019-2021. Loneliness was assessed using the 3-item University of California Loneliness Scale. Family characteristics included: marital status and living with the partner and presence of children and living with them. Statistical analysis employed Zero-Inflated Negative Binomial regression models, allowing the assessment of the outcome in both dichotomous and counting-based forms. Results: Only family characteristics related to the partner were associated with loneliness prevalence, whether in a living-apart-together arrangement (PR=0.35; 95%CI 0.23–0.53) or cohabiting (PR=0.37; 95%CI 0.30–0.45). Family characteristics concerning the partner [cohabiting (PR=0.80; 95% CI 0.73–0.88)] and children [non-cohabiting (PR=0.86; 95%CI 0.77–0.95) or cohabiting (PR=0.81; 95%CI 0.72–0,92)] were negatively associated with loneliness levels. Conclusion: Family characteristics play a crucial role in both preventing loneliness and reducing its levels. Public services for improving social support should target older adults with reduced nuclear families.

Objective: to analyze the association between the cumulative incidence, mortality, and lethality rates of COVID-19 in the older and socioeconomic indicators. Methods: this is an ecological time-trend study that considered all COVID-19 cases and deaths reported by the elderly people in all municipalities in the state of São Paulo. Results: weak positive correlations were found between the cumulative incidence rate of COVID-19 and factors such as the illiteracy rate in people aged 60 and over and elderly people with an income of up to one minimum wage. In addition, there were weak positive correlations between mortality and lethality rates and the municipal Human Development Index. There was a moderate correlation between the mortality rate and the rate of elderly people with no income. Conclusion: there is an association between income, schooling, and the municipal Human Development Index with the cumulative incidence, mortality, and lethality rates of COVID-19 in older people. Contributions to practice: the need for individualized and integrated approaches in health services is strengthened to minimize the effects of the social determinants of health on elderly people, especially in health emergencies.

Objective: to develop an information model on pain management in hospitalized aged people. Method: a Big Data retrospective and observational study guided by the Applied Healthcare Data Science Roadmap. The sample included all Electronic Health Records related to pain management in older adults aged at least 75 years old considered vulnerable in the institution and admitted to clinical and surgical units. Data science packages were used in Python ® for data analysis. Results: a total of 9,635 hospitalizations were found for 4,753 patients, with a mean age of 81 years old and 54% belonging to the female gender. The main reasons for hospitalization were diseases of the circulatory system (n=1,593; 28.6%), neoplasms (n=893; 16%) and diseases of the genitourinary system (n=508; 9.1%). A total of 60 attributes related to pain were identified and organized into groups: current pain, assessment instruments and characteristics, Nursing diagnosis, etiology of the Nursing diagnosis, interventions for relief, consultations to specialties and pain reassessment. The groups were classified into four large panels that constituted the information model. Conclusion: the information model developed presented an overview of the healthcare reality of pain management in vulnerable aged people, supporting decision-making for pain management in this population segment.

Purpose Methods Findings Conclusions Implications for nursing practice This study aims to conduct a thorough analysis of the concept of insufficient health literacy (IHL) in older adults and to refine a nursing diagnosis proposal while considering the specific characteristics of this demographic.A comprehensive concept analysis was undertaken using Walker & Avant's method as a framework.A systematic search across seventeen databases yielded 29 relevant studies for inclusion. Through analysis, we identified 15 antecedents, 3 attributes, and 7 consequents associated with IHL in older adults.The concept analysis brought clarity to the understanding of IHL within older adults, facilitating the refinement of a diagnosis proposal. This process was instrumental in establishing a diagnostic structure that accounts for the unique needs and challenges faced by older adults.The structured diagnosis derived from the concept analysis provides a solid theoretical foundation for nurses specializing in Gerontology. By tailoring care interventions to address the specific requirements of older adults, this framework enhances the quality of nursing practice and contributes to improved patient outcomes in geriatric care settings. To analyze the prevalence and factors associated with symptoms of mood swings in hospitalized elderly people. Cross-sectional study with 673 hospitalized elderly people. A sociodemographic questionnaire and Clinical-Functional Vulnerability Index-20 were applied. The chi-square test was performed. Of those evaluated, 52.3% presented discouragement, sadness, or hopelessness. Women (OR=1.5), octogenarians (OR=1.6), individuals with a negative perception of health (OR=2.6), and pre-frail (OR=2.0) and frail (OR=5.4) and who died (OR=2.5) were more likely to present this symptom (p<0.05). The prevalence of loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities was 15.0% and was significantly (p<0.05) more present in octogenarians (OR=1.9), individuals with a negative perception of health (OR= 3.7), and pre-frail (OR=2.8) and frail (OR=18.4), and who died (OR=2.6). Background: Aging covers genetic, biological and psychological characteristics, as well as those that relate to the environment in which the person is inserted, such as the social, political, economic and cultural ones. Objective: Estimate the association between functional capacity (FC) and socioeconomic status (SES) of the elderly. Method: Cross-sectional, population-based epidemiological study. We analyzed subjects between 60 and 79 years old of both sexes (n=467). The FC was estimated through the SF-36 questionnaire, ordered in quartiles (Q1=worst and Q4=best) and dichotomized. The association between FC and SES was estimated by the Kruskal-Wallis test and by multiple logistic regression. Results: The median of FC was 70 (interquartile range -- IQR=40-85). There was greater difficulty for vigorous activities (42.8%); climbing several flights of stairs (29.3%); bending, kneeling, or stooping (35.6%); and walking several blocks (30.4%). A statistically significant association was observed between FC and worse SES (Q1=32.0% vs. Q4=22.5%), male gender (Q1=27.0% vs. Q4=61.5%), sedentary lifestyle (Q1=40.5% vs. Q4=14.9%), muscle strength (Q1=24.6 kg/f vs. Q4=32.6 kg/f) and physical performance (Q1=12s vs. Q4= 9s). The adjusted logistic regression indicated an association between the worst FC and the average SES (odds ratio -- OR=2.6; 95% confidence interval -- 95%CI 1.1-6.2), the worst SES (OR=2.2; 95%CI 0.9-5.4), female gender (OR=2.4; 95%CI 1.1-5.1), being insufficiently active (OR=1.6; 95%CI 1.0-2.6) and having the worst physical performance (OR=1.4; 95%CI 1.3-1.6). Objective: to correlate COVID-19 incidence and mortality rates in elderly people before and after vaccination. Methods: an ecological study with data collected from the official platforms of the State Data Analysis System Foundation and the Prefeitura Municipal de Araraquara (Araraquara City Hall). The data was analyzed using a regression model with a negative binomial distribution and a logarithmic link function. We analyzed 3,188 COVID-19 records in people aged 60 or over, of which 3,137 were eligible for analysis. Results: there was a significant reduction in the incidence of the disease among vaccinated-aged people. No significant differences were observed in the mortality coefficient; however, there was a 67.7% decline in deaths when comparing the periods. Conclusion: the findings indicate a correlation between the vaccination of older individuals and the reduction in COVID-19 incidence and mortality rates, thereby demonstrating and underscoring the significance of adhering to vaccinations. Contributions to practice include the expansion of the theoretical framework regarding the significance of vaccination in reducing morbidity and mortality from COVID-19, particularly in the elderly population. This is especially important considering the endemicity of the disease and the unlimited availability of false information.

Abstract Objective: to evaluate telenursing as a support technology in the transition of care for elderly people and their caregivers in the context of home care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: quasi-experimental before-after, non-randomized study, with 219 elderly people and caregivers from the home care service, divided into 131 in the intervention groups and 88 in the control group. Analytical treatment, descriptive and inferential statistics were carried out. Results: 1691 calls were made, 1515 to the intervention group and 176 to the control group. It was observed that in the first call there is a greater need for interventions to promote health and this quantity decreases throughout the calls with a significant result (p-value < 0.001). The outcomes analyzed were hospitalization, death, discharge or continuation of the home care service and it was observed that the chance of discharge from the service was nine times greater in the intervention group. Continuity of care from the home care service and discharge after the end of the calls were also significant (p-value < 0.001). Conclusion: telenursing was a technology to support care, mainly for health promotion and discharge from home care services.

El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la percepción de calidad de vida en la población geriátrica de la provincia El Oro, Ecuador, durante el confinamiento por la pandemia por COVID-19. Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo, transversal, con adultos mayores de 65 años (n = 399), utilizando el WHOQOL-BREF. Se correlacionaron las preguntas generales con los dominios del cuestionario: salud física, psicológica, relaciones sociales y entorno, y además con los factores sociodemográficos. El α de Cronbach fue 0,90. Se realizó la prueba de chi cuadrado para establecer asociación significativa entre las variables sociodemográficas, Mann-Whitney U para evaluar diferencias entre la demografía y los dominios, y el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman. La media ± desviación estándar para los dominios físico, psicológico, social y ambiental fue 2,99±0,60; 3,16±0,79; 2,87±0,74; 2,92±0,77, respectivamente. Se encontró una asociación significativa entre la calidad de vida y la salud con todos los dominios (p = 0,01), con valores más elevados en los dominios: salud psicológica y ambiente. Los ítems peor puntuados fueron las finanzas, actividades de ocio, y sentimientos negativos (dominios ambiental y psicológico). Los adultos mayores refirieron una peor calidad de vida y peores puntuaciones en todos los ítems: a mayor edad, los del género masculino, los que no trabajan, estaban enfermos, viudos, o sin estudios. Los principales factores que mostraron una incidencia negativa en la salud y calidad de vida de la población geriátrica en la etapa de confinamiento de la pandemia fueron los ambientales y psicológicos. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the perception of quality of life in the geriatric population of the El Oro province, Ecuador, during confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with adults over 65 years of age (n = 399), using the WHOQOL-BREF. The general questions were correlated with the domains of the questionnaire: physical and psychological health, social relationships, and environment, and also with sociodemographic factors. Cronbach's α was 0.90. The tests performed were the chi-square test, to establish a significant association between sociodemographic variables; the Mann-Whitney U test, to evaluate differences between demographics and domains; and the Spearman correlation coefficient. The mean ± standard deviation for the physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains was 2,99 ± 0,60; 3,16 ± 0,79; 2,87 ± 0,74; 2,92 ± 0,77, respectively. A significant association was found between quality of life and health with all domains (p = 0.01), with higher values ​​in the domains: psychological health and environment. The lowest rated items were finances, leisure activities, and negative feelings (environmental and psychological domains). Those who reported a worse quality of life and worse scores in all items were: the older population, the male gender, the unemployed, and those who were sick, widowed, or uneducated. The main factors that showed a negative impact on the health and quality of life of the geriatric population in the confinement stage of the pandemic were environmental and psychological factors. Objective: to understand the knowledge of aged women about Sexually Transmitted Infections. Methods: a qualitative study with 11 aged women from a social group at a Basic Health Unit. Data was collected individually through semi-structured interviews, coded using NVIVO software, and analyzed using Thematic Content Analysis. Results: four categories emerged: Sexually Transmitted Infections known by the elderly; Different forms of transmission; Forms of prevention and detection; and Barriers to Knowledge and Sexually Transmitted Infections care. Conclusion: participants' knowledge of Sexually Transmitted Infections was observed, especially HIV, syphilis, and gonorrhea. There was a gap in knowledge about the distinction between HIV infection and AIDS. The lack of information about active sexuality is a barrier that interferes with safe sexual practice. Contributions to practice: understanding the knowledge of aged women about Sexually Transmitted Infections provides information that can help plan and implement measures to prevent these infections.

Objective: to verify the evidence of validity of an educational game for the older adults’ cognitive stimulation. Methods: methodological study developed in three phases: content validation by expert judges; appearance validation by design judges; and evaluation by the target audience, carried out with older adults. Descriptive and inferential analysis was carried out. Results: the educational game is named “InterativaMENTE60+” and its structure contains a cover, board, tokens, dice, cards (command, observe, question and challenge) and instruction manual. The Content Validity Index was 0.84, showing clarity and appropriate language, theoretical relevance, and practical pertinence. The design judges assessed the game as suitable and the target audience's Concordance Index was 0.9. Conclusion: the game showed satisfactory evidence of validity, being considered adequate and valid based on its content and appearance. Contributions for the practice: it is a resource that can help stimulate the cognitive functions of older adults.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To describe the functional clinical profile of elderly people linked to primary health care, using the Functional Clinical Vulnerability Index (IVCF-20) and to spatialize those with the greatest functional decline by primary health care units in the municipality of Uberlândia, in the state of Minas Gerais (MG), in the year 2022. METHODS A cross-sectional study with secondary data from the Municipal Health Department of Uberlândia-MG. The variables were compared using Student’s t-test, Mann Whitney test, Pearson’s chi-square, and multinomial logistic regression to obtain the independent effect of each variable. The significance level adopted was 5% (p < 0.05). The georeferenced database in ArcGIS® was used. RESULTS 47,182 older adults were evaluated with a mean age of 70.3 years (60 to 113 years), 27,138 of whom were women (57.52%), with a clear predominance of low-risk or robust older adults (69.40%). However, 11.09% are high-risk older adults and 19.52% are at risk of frailty. Older men had independently lower odds of moderate and high risk compared to older women (OR = 0.53; p < 0.001). A high prevalence of polypharmacy was observed, 21.40% of the older adult population, particularly in frail older adults, with a prevalence of 63.08%. There was a greater distribution of frail older adults around the central region of the municipality and in health units with a larger coverage area. The IVCF-20 made it possible to screen frailty in primary health care. CONCLUSION The instrument is capable of stratifying the risk of older adults in health care networks through primary health care, enabling the application of individualized preventive, promotional, palliative, or rehabilitative interventions, according to the clinical functional stratum of the older adult and the compromised functional domains. Risk stratification and spatial distribution of the frailest older adults can be a good strategy for qualifying health professionals with the aim of maximizing the autonomy and independence of the older adults.

Abstract Objective To investigate the factors associated with performance equal to or higher than the 95th percentile in the Mini Mental State Examination of elderly people aged 80 years and over. Method This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative research conducted with a convenience sample composed of 101 cognitively healthy older adults residing in Brazil's Federal District, assessed by scales that measure mood, social support, functional performance, and health. Results Bivariate statistical analyses indicated that older individuals with better cognitive performance in the Mini Mental State Examination, when compared to participants with performance below the 95th percentile, showed better self-perceived health, greater satisfaction with the ability to perform daily tasks, and a more positive evaluation of general social support and in the domain of having someone to talk to when feeling lonely. Conclusion High global cognitive performance in old age is associated with perceived health, satisfaction with functional performance, and social support.

Introduction: With increasing longevity, health services, especially Primary Health Care, must be structured to increasingly absorb the demands of aging and work towards promoting it efficiently. Objective: To identify care actions to promote healthy aging in a Family Health Strategy in a municipality in the North of Minas Gerais, Brazil, from the perspective of elderly people. Method: This is a descriptive, qualitative study with data collected from August to September 2022 and analyzed using Thematic Analysis. Results: The study was carried out with 16 elderly people. The actions offered include clinical care from health professionals and collective educational actions supported by the use of technology, in conversation circles and the use of messaging applications to guide the elderly person. Conclusion: Actions must be expanded in relation to the variety of services made available to cover all the variables of the elderly person's perception of their needs, so that assistance is comprehensive. Objective: To verify the knowledge and therapeutic use of medicinal plants by the elderly. Methods: This is a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive research, carried out between September and October 2019, in Florianópolis, through semi-structured interviews applied to elderly people. For data analysis, content analysis was used. Results: 21 elderly people participated, 17 women and 4 men, aged between 60 and 85 years, most with incomplete elementary school and monthly family income of 1 to 3 minimum wages. Regarding the use of medicinal plants, all reported using them in their daily lives. Three thematic categories emerged from the data analysis: Practices related to the use of teas; Knowledge about medicinal plants; and Comparisons between allopathy and the use of medicinal plants. In addition, the plants mentioned, as well as their therapeutic purpose, were organized forming a list of 56 plants, highlighting: rosemary, boldo, espinheira santa, mint and melissa/ lemon balm, which were mentioned by more than five respondents. The results were compared with the literature. Conclusion: Medicinal plants are used by the elderly, regardless of the existence of guidance from health professionals. Introduction: Due to the aging of the population, nursing processes have been adapted to these patients, who require a high level of care and guidance. Objective: Analyzing the degree of dependence on nursing care by elderly patients (65 years or older) with femur fractures. Materials and Methods: retrospective, with a quantitative approach, carried out in a private hospital from April 2021 to April 2022. According to the Patient Classification System (PCS), the sample comprehends 41 patients, analyzed epidemiological data and degree of dependence Study of nursing care during hospitalization, environment of hospitalization, and discharge. Results: Composed of 41 patients, mean age of 84 years and female predominance (75.61%). Concerning fractures, there was a greater occurrence due to falls from standing height and a predominance of neck fractures, with an average time until surgery of less than 16 hours. Systemic Arterial Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus were predominant. The average of the PCS estimates presented 24.26 in the 1st, 26.12 in the 2nd, and 26.24 in the 3rd. The length of hospital stay was 7 days and no deaths were reported. Discussion: The findings on sociodemographic data, reasons for falls, location, comorbidities, degree of dependence, and length of hospital stay are similar to those available in databases. They differ, in better quality, under time until surgery and clinical. Conclusions: The study presents specific knowledge to carry out the care of the intrahospital nursing process, thus allowing the systematization of the team's assistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assess functional capacity and the association of risk conditions in the elderly. Cross-sectional, descriptive study, carried out in the area covered by a Family Health Strategy, from June to November 2018, using a family risk classification instrument. Data were analyzed using SPSS® software. The sample was composed of 92 elderly people, with a predominance of females (69.57%) and an average age of 72.13±9 years. 8.6% were dependent on carrying out activities of daily living. The most prevalent risk conditions were elderly polypharmacy (9.14%) and repeated falls (8.06%), which showed a statistically significant level of association (p-value≤0.05) with functional disability. A considerable prevalence of risk conditions with an impact on the functionality of the elderly was evidenced, which are often related, requiring a broader and more comprehensive view of the Family Health Strategy. Aim: The aim of this study was to draw a stomatological profile of elderly patients treated at the Stomatology Service of a referral hospital in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais -- Brazil. Methods: Information was collected on the diagnostic hypotheses and definitive diagnoses of the elderly (aged 60 to 98 years) treated at the service, from September 2014 to December 2017. Results: Medical records of 1388 patients were evaluated, and 281 different diagnostic hypotheses were found. For males, there was a higher prevalence in both diagnostic and definitive diagnoses for benign and malignant epithelial neoplasms; In females, there was a higher prevalence, also in the hypotheses and diagnostic definitions, of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, related to the use of removable prostheses. Conclusion: Thus, this study evidenced the importance of knowledge about the main alterations that affect the oral cavity of elderly patients, which allows better attention to this population, besides being a pioneering stomatological study in hospital units.
