Several recent European studies conducted over the past 50 years have documented a positive connection between a person's height and their salary. However, there are very few studies for earlier periods and for southern Europe. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between the height of conscripts born between 1888 and 1907 and their daily wages in 1924. Data for the Spanish city of Zaragoza was used. The results showed that for every additional 10 cm of height, an individual earned approximately 3% more. Furthermore, the shortest 25% of individuals suffered a considerable penalty in their income (about 15%). To understand the causes of this discrimination, we then analyzed the data by socioeconomic group. We found that people in low socioeco nomic groups essentially suffered wage discrimination. This finding could be linked to the fact that a tall stature conveys an image of strength and productivity. It should be noted that these results were found mainly for the urban areas, with their relatively large labor supply and weak blood ties rather than rural areas or among immigrants. Electrospinning and pressurized gyration are two widely adopted methods for polymeric fiber production, valued for their simplicity, versatility, and relatively low environmental impact. Despite its advantages, electrospinning has notable limitations, including low production efficiency and significant safety concerns. Pressurized gyration, however, offers greater productivity and a safer, more sustainable process, making it an excellent candidate for industrial scaling. To fully realize this potential, optimizing the pressurized gyration process is essential for enhancing efficiency and achieving sustainable large‐scale fiber production. In this study, the effects of vessel orifice height on the production rate and fiber morphology in pressurized gyration are explored. A series of experiments is conducted using a 15 wt.% polycaprolactone (PCL) solution, with vessels of identical diameter but differing orifice heights 7.5, 15, and 22.5 mm tested under pressures of 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 MPa, all at a constant rotational speed of 13 000 rpm. The 7.5 mm orifice height demonstrates the highest production rate under pressure while increasing orifice height led to finer fiber diameters, better alignment, and smaller beads. These findings underscore the importance of optimizing vessel design, along with process and solution parameters, for scaling up pressurized gyration fiber manufacturing to meet industrial demands. Objective: The aim is to explore the role of anthropometric traits and sociodemographic characteristics on human survival. Methods: Anthropometrics and sociodemographic data of 1944 conscripts born in the first decade of the 20th century in rural municipalities of Calabria (Southern Italy) who underwent medical examinations for military service were collected. Medical examinations were linked to individual survival data. Results: Height and type of occupation influenced life expectancy. For taller men, the risk of mortality increases by about 20% when compared with men with middle height, while farmers exhibited a significant survival advantage compared to those with other working experiences. Discussion: Height and type of occupation were associated with human mortality. These results are likely to be related to the effect of healthy dietary patterns and physical activity on life expectancy. Further studies are needed to understand to what extent these results obtained in a rural context can be generalized to other contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Laron syndrome (LS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the growth hormone (GH) receptor gene, resulting in GH resistance and reduced levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Patients with LS exhibit severe growth retardation, low IGF-1 levels, elevated basal GH, and poor response to GH stimulation. Recombinant IGF-1 is the only approved treatment and has been shown to improve linear growth. This study evaluates the long-term efficacy and safety of IGF-1 therapy in a large cohort of LS patients treated at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSH & RC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia over 22 years. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of medical records for 28 patients with growth hormone insensitivity syndrome, including 12 males and 16 females, treated with IGF-1 from 1998 to 2020. Patients were selected based on criteria including age over 2 years, height standard deviation score (SDS) ≤−2.8, normal or elevated GH secretion (>2.5 ng/mL), IGF-1 levels <50 ng/mL, and insensitivity to exogenous GH. IGF-1 was administered initially at 40 μg/kg/dose subcutaneously twice daily, escalating to a maximum of 120 μg/kg/dose as tolerated. Dosage was adjusted to minimize hypoglycemia risk, with blood glucose monitored frequently during hospitalization. In addition, molecular genetic results were reviewed for each patient in the cohort. Results: IGF-1 treatment significantly increased height velocity (HV) from a baseline of 3.4 cm/year to 6.5 cm/year in the first year (mean difference of 3.1 cm/year, p < 0.0001). In the second year, HV remained elevated at 5 cm/year (mean difference of 1.6 cm/year, p = 0.0015). Long-term follow-up over 10 years demonstrated sustained improvements in HV compared to baseline, with the most substantial gains occurring within the initial 5 years. Weight SDSs also showed significant improvement. Age at the start of therapy did not notably affect growth outcomes, though longer treatment durations were associated with greater growth. Ten disease-causing variants in the GHR gene were identified in 24 of the 28 LS patients. Conclusion: IGF-1 therapy significantly enhanced linear growth in children with Laron syndrome and was generally well tolerated. Although many patients did not reach normal adult height, the growth achieved with IGF-1 treatment was markedly better than expected without therapy. This study underscores the effectiveness of IGF-1 in improving growth outcomes and highlights the need for continued longitudinal studies to optimize treatment strategies and manage potential complications. To evaluate the association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and linear growth in children, and determine factors associated with compromised linear growth in children with AD. A PRISMA-compliant systematic review was conducted. Databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane) were searched from inception to June 2024 for articles that reported a quantitative relationship between AD and linear growth in children (< 18 years old). Quality of included articles was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tools while quality of evidence in these studies was evaluated using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria. Fourteen studies (comprising 50,146 patients with AD) were included. Seven studies reported a strong positive or positive association between AD and reduced height standard deviation score (SDS) in children; the others reported no association. Only 3 studies had moderate quality of evidence, all of which reported an association between AD and poorer height SDS; the remaining 11 studies scored low in quality of evidence. Three studies reported the impact of AD on height to be transient. Secondary analysis showed AD severity, earlier AD onset, sleep disruption and, food restriction, to be risk factors for linear growth impairment in patients with AD. Topical steroid use was not associated with shorter stature in patients with AD. Conclusion: Current evidence on the association between childhood AD and poor linear growth is weak and inconsistent. However, patients with more severe AD, earlier disease onset, poorer sleep quality and higher nutritional restrictions appear more susceptible to linear growth impairment. This study aims to evaluate discrepancies between self-reported and measured height and weight, with a focus on sex differences and group variation among Turkish immigrants living in the Netherlands, Germany, and Türkiye. Data were collected from 478 participants (202 male and 276 female) across these three countries. Both selfreported and measured values for height and weight were recorded and analyzed. Linear regression models were used to investigate the relationship between the differences in reported and measured values and BMI. Results showed significant differences between self-reported and measured height and weight across sexes and origins. Females reported greater height differences than males; Turkish immigrant individuals living in the Netherlands in particular reported their heights as higher than other groups for both sexes (Males: 1.77 cm; Females: 1.79 cm). Similarly, weight discrepancies were more pronounced among females, particularly those from the Netherlands, with a selfreported weight that was -0.68 kg lower than the measured weight. These results suggest a tendency for participants to overestimate height and underestimate weight, with varying patterns based on sex and country of origin. Regression analyses indicated a positive correlation between BMI and the magnitude of discrepancies between selfreported and measured anthropometric values. These findings underscore the importance of considering self-report biases in anthropometric studies and highlight the need for anthropometric measurements in health assessments, particularly when assessing immigrant populations. Given a semigroup S , for each Green's relation K ∈ { L , R , J , H } on S , the K -height of S , denoted by H K (S) , is the height of the poset of K -classes of S. More precisely, if there is a finite bound on the sizes of chains of K -classes of S , then H K (S) is defined as the maximum size of such a chain; otherwise, we say that S has infinite K -height. We discuss the relationships between these four K -heights. The main results concern the class of stable semigroups, which includes all finite semigroups. In particular, we prove that a stable semigroup has finite L -height if and only if it has finite R -height if and only if it has finite J -height. In fact, for a stable semigroup S , if H L (S) = n then H R (S) ≤ 2 n − 1 and H J (S) ≤ 2 n − 1 , and we exhibit a family of examples to prove that these bounds are sharp. Furthermore, we prove that if 2 ≤ H L (S) < ∞ and 2 ≤ H R (S) < ∞ , then H J (S) ≤ H L (S) + H R (S) − 2. We also show that for each n ∈ N there exists a semigroup S such that H L (S) = H R (S) = 2 n + n − 3 and H J (S) = 2 n + 1 − 4. By way of contrast, we prove that for a regular semigroup the L -, R - and H -heights coincide with each other, and are greater or equal to the J -height.
