Abstract

This paper describes technical details and new scientific opportunities offered by the new High Power Laser Facility at the ESRF, opened to users since 2022. This facility enables laser-induced dynamic compression experiments probed by ultra-fast X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy at beamline ID24-ED. This capability allows to reach and probe more extreme pressure and temperature states and higher strain rates with respect to static compression, addressing open questions in fundamental, planetary and material science. 2. Role of Composition on the Ultrafast Structural Dynamics of Silicate Glasses in Extreme Conditions

Abstract

Composition and network structure of doped silicate glasses can strongly dictate their material properties, including their dynamic behavior in extreme conditions. The fundamental understanding of the role of network structure and related atomic-scale mechanisms are crucial for a wide range of phenomena, including planetary interiors and formation, as well as the development of high-performance glasses for military and aerospace applications. While the high-pressure-temperature phase diagram of pure silica has been widely studied, the behavior of compositionally modified silicate glasses has been extrapolated based on pure silica, and direct evidence based on structural measurements has been lacking. Using time-resolved x-ray diffraction and laser-driven shock compression, we directly resolved nanosecond structural dynamics in silicate glasses doped with network forming cations Al3+ and B3+ (borosilicate glass) and network modifying cations Na+ and Ca2+ (soda-lime glass). From 40 to 60 GPa, distinct polymorphic behavior strongly dependent on network structure is observed. Borosilicate glass undergoes polymorphic phase transitions with crystal symmetry strongly dependent on the pressure, while soda-lime glass undergoes modification of coordination number but no change in the global crystal symmetry. Above 70 GPa, the responses of both glasses are independent of the network structure with a resultant diaplectic (shock-produced densified) glass phase. We have established a novel and complex phase diagram of doped silicate glasses from 40 to 312 GPa under shock compression. Additionally, we directly resolved the structural phases in these glasses during complex shock-release wave interactions under a decaying shock, from 20 – 75 GPa. Amorphous to crystalline transitions were observed for both glasses under shock-release between 48 to 75 GPa. These studies clearly demonstrate that the structural response of silicate glasses is influenced not only by their network structure but also by the specific pressure-temperature pathways they have undergone.

Abstract

The European XFEL delivers up to 27000 intense (>1012 photons) pulses per second, of ultrashort (≤50 fs) and transversely coherent X‐ray radiation, at a maximum repetition rate of 4.5 MHz. Its unique X‐ray beam parameters enable groundbreaking experiments in matter at extreme conditions at the High Energy Density (HED) scientific instrument. The performance of the HED instrument during its first two years of operation, its scientific remit, as well as ongoing installations towards full operation are presented. Scientific goals of HED include the investigation of extreme states of matter created by intense laser pulses, diamond anvil cells, or pulsed magnets, and ultrafast X‐ray methods that allow their diagnosis using self‐amplified spontaneous emission between 5 and 25 keV, coupled with X‐ray monochromators and optional seeded beam operation. The HED instrument provides two target chambers, X‐ray spectrometers for emission and scattering, X‐ray detectors, and a timing tool to correct for residual timing jitter between laser and X‐ray pulses. The LCLS beam provides revolutionary capabilities for studying the transient behavior of matter in extreme conditions. The particular strength of the Matter in Extreme Conditions instrument is that it combines the unique LCLS beam with high-power optical laser beams, and a suite of dedicated diagnostics tailored for this field of science. Sci. 2020, 10, 2224. https://doi.org/10.3390/app10072224., We developed an experimental platform for combinative use of an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) and a high-power nanosecond laser. The main target of the platform is an investigation of matter under high-pressure states produced by a laser-shock compression. In this paper, we show details of the experimental platform, including XFEL parameters and the focusing optics, the laser irradiation system and X-ray diagnostics. As a demonstration of the high-power laser-pump XFEL-probe experiment, we performed an X-ray diffraction measurement. An in-situ single-shot X-ray diffraction pattern expands to a large angle side, which shows a corundum was compressed by laser irradiation.
