This article aims to present two analytical tools for the analysis of syntactic models in the history of Western grammaticography: the taxonomic network and its glossary of metaterms. These tools are employed in systematizing the syntactic model found in the 'Grammatica da língua Portugue∫a' (1540) by João de Barros. The research aligns with reflections on the historiography of grammaticography and terminography (Swiggers, 2020; Gómez Asencio; Gonçalves, 2015; among others) and adheres to certain principles and procedures, such as considering the content of metaterms within the 'focal content' and 'contrastive content' interface, and analyzing metaterms at different levels of reference, from the most 'substantial' to the most 'relational'. The results demonstrate that the taxonomic network graphically records and exemplifies the formal and logical relationships between metaterms that structure a syntactic model, capturing its macroorganization and revealing terminographic details. The glossary of metaterms allows present-day readers to gain a deeper understanding of a past syntactic model, as well as to track transformations in relationships between terms and concepts. From the interpretation of Barros's (1540) network and glossary, it is concluded, among other points, that the notion of 'regimento' asserts itself in the work not only due to the possibility of adherence to the Latin case system but also for its value to the metalinguistic description axis; the grammarian is sensitive to complex language constructions, although lacking technical apparatus and appropriate terminology to systematize these syntactic processes. As is well-known, the descriptive grammars of the European languages started to regularly include a chapter on word-formation after Bopp’s work (Lindner 2015). However, the grammars of the Semitic languages, the philosophical grammars of German, the grammars of Sanskrit and some missionary grammars include such chapter even before Bopp. Among these, the German grammars were subject to some recent studies (Alfieri 2018, 2019), while the remaining groups of grammars have never been discussed in this perspective. The present paper aims to fill the gap by analysing the treatment of word-formation in the grammars of Sanskrit written before Bopp (1827).

Materials for teaching, reading, and writing have been the subject of interest in historiography of linguistics over the last few decades. This article analyses one of these materials, in order to reconstruct the history of school texts in Chile: Arturo Atria Osorio’s Silabario biológico (1925). The general objective is to study the marks of intralinguistic and extralinguistic ideology (Zamorano Aguilar 2019a and 2019b), for which we start from the communication theory applied to the historiographical fact (Zamorano Aguilar 2012 and 2022), which allows us to combine data relating to the different components that form part of the communicative act from the Jakobsonian, and of pragmatic theories. As for the former, the research demonstrates the author’s attachment to academic doctrines both in orthographic and grammatical terms, probably to GRAE 1911 or 1913. The second, on the other hand, demonstrates the indoctrinatory purpose of this type of work (Calero Vaquera 2004) and its variability according to the interests of the author of the text. Este artículo analiza la aportación de José Nicolás Vacas a la teoría gramatical ecuatoriana de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, a través del análisis de su tratado de Sintaxis castellana extractada de varias obras, especialmente de la Gramática del Sr. Don Andrés Bello y dedicada á los estudiantes del Colegio Seminario de Ibarra (1899). Se analiza la influencia en él de las fuentes canónicas hispánicas de la época, como Andrés Bello, su única fuente declarada, y la Real Academia Española, así como de otras fuentes extendidas en la enseñanza gramatical del Ecuador finisecular, como los manuales de los Hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas. En concreto, se contrasta el tratamiento de los conceptos de sintaxis, concordancia, régimen, construcción y proposición. Los resultados permiten cuestionar la influencia real de Bello en la doctrina de este autor, así como vislumbrar la presencia en esta obra de otras posibles fuentes no canónicas.

In 1831, the Portuguese-born physician Francisco Solano Constâncio (1777-1846) published in Paris two metalinguistic works for a Lusophone public. Alongside the Grammatica analytica da lingua portugueza (Constâncio, 1831b), the Nova grammatica da lingua franceza (Constâncio, 1831a) is of special interest to the history of the French metalinguistic tradition and the history of French language teaching in Portugal, since the author identifies its possible source on the title page of his work. Therefore, the present paper offers an analysis of the initial description of the parts of the speech in the Nova grammatica da lingua franceza in light of the Nouvelle grammaire française, sur un plan très-méthodique, an important contemporary metalinguistic work by the French grammarians François-Joseph-Michel Noël (1756-1841) and Charles-Pierre Chapsal (1787-1858) which by then already had twenty editions since 1823.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a elaboração de gramáticas para as línguas portuguesa e espanhola, descrevendo aspectos textuais e extratextuais que caracterizam esse processo nas respectivas tradições linguísticas e comparando-as, a fim de encontrar pontos de convergências e divergência. Para tanto, a partir da consulta ao acervo físico e eletrônico de diferentes centros de pesquisa, foi possível a construção de um corpus bibliográfico que permitiu o cumprimento do objetivo do estudo a partir da análise de 172 gramáticas de língua portuguesa e 138 da língua espanhola, distribuídas desde o século XV. Como resultado, foi possível observar que ambas as tradições de codificação trazem compatibilidades históricas que resultaram em um processo de normalização linguística em que muitas características convergem, ao passo que outras divergem. Convergem, por exemplo, na intensificação desse processo a partir do século XIX, marcando um movimento de constante crescimento. Divergem, por outro lado, na quantidade de países engajados no processo e na relação da gramática escolar com o modelo descritivo, por exemplo. Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the elaboration of grammars for the Portuguese and Spanish languages, describing textual and extratextual aspects that characterize this process in the respective linguistic traditions and comparing them in order to find points of convergence and divergence. For that purpose, by consulting the physical and electronic collections of different research centers, it was possible to build a bibliographic corpus which allowed the fulfillment of the study’s objective based on the analysis of 172 Portuguese and 138 Spanish grammars distributed since the 15th century. As a result, it was possible to observe that both codification traditions bring historical compatibilities which resulted in a process of linguistic normalization in which many features converge, while others diverge. They converge, for instance, in the intensification of this process from the 19th century onwards, marking a movement of constant growth. They diverge, on the other hand, in the number of countries engaged in the process and in the relation of school grammar to the descriptive model, for instance. George Y. Shevelovʼs Contribution to Slavic Historical- Comparative Linguistics with a Focus on Language Contact: Remarks on A Prehistory of Slavic On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the death of the Ukrainian linguist G. Y. Shevelov, this article attempts to evaluate his contribution to historical-comparative linguistics. Commenting on his pivotal work A Prehistory of Slavic: The Historical Phonology of Common Slavic (1964/1965), we mainly focus on how Shevelov understood the role of language contact in the development of languages in general and in the phonological development of Common Slavic in particular. His approach is analyzed with the help of our concept of para­digms of historical-comparative linguistics, working with the conventionalist, revisionist, and revolutionary paradigms. This paper presents an analysis of the infl uence of theories and methods of the science of language of the second half of the twentieth century in Portuguese language textbooks for basic education. The analytical perspective is that of the historiography of linguistics, with emphasis on the concept of layers, which locates the texts in a social and historical context while analyzing their internal contents (what the authors present as teaching content). The material of analysis is composed of three textbooks produced for use in Brazil in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s. In this period, linguistics was the main guideline to defi ne the directions of language teaching materialized in the textbooks, understood in its pedagogical and social function. This article studies three of the most relevant works by Ralph Cudworth (1617-1688), mentioned by Chomsky in his Cartesian Linguistics. Regarding methodology, we assume the pillars of the historiography of linguistics as exposed by Swiggers, and also Brekle’s division into internal and external dimensions, using the theory of textual series as the key instrument (Hassler; Zamorano Aguilar 2013). The hypothesis defended and demonstrated in this work is that Chomsky, in dealing with the Cudworthian theory –even though he includes some epistemologically fundamental elements– obviates key aspects of Cudworth’s contribution not only to 17th century English rationalist philosophy, but also to historiography in general. Thus, we observe, apart from the mention to just one of the works of Cudworth, the partiality in the description of his theory developed by Chomsky. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resumo Este texto trata de três questões: (i) a natureza narrativa da história como registro de acontecimentos; (ii) o papel da retórica na seleção e explicação de fatos históricos na linguística; (iii) a construção do papel de líder revolucionário nos estudos sobre a linguagem e sua recepção brasileira. Para tanto, a Historiografia da Linguística será o eixo teórico-metodológico condutor das reflexões que serão propostas, em diálogo com uma Filosofia e Teoria da História. Um estudo de caso acompanha as reflexões teóricas, com destaque para a análise da elaboração da imagem histórica de Noam Chomsky como líder revolucionário, tal como simbolicamente representado nas obras As ideias de Chomsky e Revolução na linguística. A discussão aponta para uma avaliação crítica dos tipos de historiografia elaborados ao longo da história da ciência da linguagem e sua contribuição para a reflexão sobre a história e suas representações. It is intended to raise three questions: (i) the narrative nature of history as a record of events; (ii) the role of rhetoric in the selection and explanation of historical facts in Linguistics; (iii) the “revolutionary leader” role construction in the language studies and its Brazilian reception. For that, the Historiography of Linguistics will be the theoretical-methodological axis and will conduct proposed reflections, within Philosophy and Theory of History. A case study follows the theoretical reflections, emphasising the analysis of the elaboration of the historical image of Noam Chomsky as “revolutionary leader”, as symbolically represented in the works As ideias de Chomsky [Chomsky's ideas] and Revolução na linguística [Revolution in Linguistics] in his Brazilian translations. The discussion points to a critical evaluation of the types of historiography elaborated throughout the history of the science of language and its contribution to the reflection on history and its representations.

This paper aims to present, under the perspective of the Linguistics Historiography, some ideas in the Archeology of Knowledge, in which Michel Foucault substantiates the archaeological method. After characterizing the climate of opinion in which the book is published, the transformation of the document into a monument stands out as fundamental for Foucault's discursive analysis. In addition, it describes how the singular notions of discourse and statement presented by Foucault ratify such an analysis as intrinsic to the discourse. This text aims to propose a theoretical and methodological reflection on the use that Historiography of Linguistics calls as rhetoric in studies that seek to reconstruct, with an interpretative goal, moments in the history of studies about the language.

This paper is a proposal for a critical edition of Nouvelle Methode of the Spanish language, by Claude Lancelot (1660), which takes into account the publishing history of the text and the grammaticographical activity of its author. On the one hand, we study different editions in order to trace its evolution and choose the basic text for the new edition. On the other hand, we defend the relevance of a comparative reading of Lancelot's works based on two premises: firstly, there are cross-references between them (general grammar and grammars of ancient and modern languages); secondly, the Nouvelle Methode [...] espagnole, with its didactic aim and minimum theoretical approach, was conceived as a continuation of his general grammar and his Italian grammar.

This paper addresses the issue of the German influence on Czech on the phonological level from the historiographical point of view. The beginnings of the investigation of the alleged contact influence of German on some Czech phonological changes is usually associated with the first volume of Jan Gebauer's historical grammar of the Czech language (1894). I show that the German phonological influence was in fact believed to play a role in the development of Czech both in the earlier studies by Gebauer and in the writings of his predecessors, Martin Hattala and Jan Kollár. Gebauer's general thoughts on the foreign influence on language development are also discussed.

The aim of this article is the relationship between grammar and ideology. The ideology can be approached from an intralinguistic level (theoretical doctrine) or from an extralinguistic level (socio-historical-cultural keys). The specific object of this work is the intralinguistic level. In order to investigate that level, the methodological framework used is the internal and external linguistic historiography approach (Brekle 1986) and also the communicative theory. It has been applied to the Tratado elemental de la lengua castellana (1915) written by Rufino Blanco y Sánchez, an intellectual and pedagogue of importance in Spain at the beginning of the 20th century. The article concludes that, despite its Catholic and conservative extralinguistic ideology, Blanco is an innovative grammarian or, at least, an eclectic in scientific and linguistic matters. "The old 'new communication' Bateson and Watzlawick. Lessons from an interdisciplinary and applied current". The article studies the principles and effects of the current "new communication", promoted by the group of Palo Alto. The main authors were Gregory Bateson, Paul Watzlawick, Ray L. Birdwhistell and Edward T. Hall. They brought expertise in anthropology, sociology, psychiatry and linguistics to experience in face-to-face communication. These scientists developed studies between the fifties and the seventies of the twentieth century on nonverbal communication and create such disciplines asproxemics and kinesics. Those studies were applied to mental therapy and interpersonal relationships. Studies of the "new communication" gained widespread in popular books on nonverbal communication, but received little attention of linguists. At present, pragmatics and discourse analysis have affinity with the current of Palo Alto or "Invisible College". Knowing better that model can enrich contextual linguistics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Non-personal forms of the verb have received, from a historiographical point of view, little attention. However, studies on the verb or on specific authors are emphasizing that ``non-personal forms'' of the verbs are not always well understood neither explained. This article discusses the category ``gerund'' according to two methodological aspects: conceptualisation and the gramatisation process of this topic throughout history. We also study in detail (during the pre-academic period, from 1492 to 1771, and taking into account the socio-cultural and theoretical context) the following issues: morphology of the gerund, semantic-functional aspects, features of characterization, inter and intralinguistic transfers and the analysis of gerund categorisation process in the history of Spanish linguistic thought from 15th to 18th century.

This article investigates the internal canon built by grammarians themselves explicitly shown in its treaties. For this project, a plural corpus has been analysed. This corpus consists of thirty four grammars, prepared for different audiences, written by different senders and presented with different theoretical or didactic discourses. We study occurrences in the corpus, frequencies of each unit, the relationship between canon and senders, canon and receivers and canon and type of grammar as well as the relationship between canon and the parts of grammar where it appears. We also analyse traditions and main sources which are the foundations of Spanish grammar from 1492 ( Grammar of Nebrija) to 1798 ( Art Torío de la Riva). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"Biographical historiography in Portraits of Linguists by Thomas A. Sebeok". The article deals with the compilation of biographies published in 1966 by Thomas A. Sebeok: Portraits of Linguists. A Biographical Source Book for the History of Western Linguistics, 1746-1963. This work is a pioneer in its field and includes 90 biographical writings about 72 linguists from the comparativism and structuralism schools. The paper studies the influence in narrative historiography of linguistics, one that draws on biographical sources (Sebeok 1966) and autobiographical sources (Davis and O'Cain 1980; Koerner 1990, 1998; Swiggers 1997; Brown and Law 2002; Ertler 2007- 2015; Timotin and Colceriu 2012; Laborda, Romera and Fernandez Planas 2014). The article outlines the canon established by Sebeok. The canonical account of Sebeok is characterized by a traditional corpus, with personal contributions of the editor and relevant reviews from biographers. The corpus is composed of male authors who work mainly in Central Europe and the United States. The article examines especially the biographies of R. Rask, O. Jespersen, K. and L. Spitzer Verner. Dedicated to the first two editions of the Jesuit pupil's Latin textbooks, titled Emmanvelis Alvari è Societate Iesv de institvtione grammatica libri tres (Lisbon, 1573) that were published by its author, the Portuguese grammarian Manuel Álvares (1526-1583), this paper focuses on the role of the vernacular in the chapter "De Verborvm Conivgatione". Whereas vernacular equivalents in Latin verb paradigms have been recurring in the Latin- Portuguese grammar tradition since Máximo de Sousa's Institutiones (1535), Álvares maintains Latin as the metalanguage of his grammar, while continuing and improving the presence of the Portuguese and Spanish vernacular in the paradigms of the grammar's respective editions. Additionally, the ars minor editions offer some new scholia with contrastive observations destined to allow Portuguese and Spanish students a better understanding of some of the more peculiar topics of Latin grammar.
