Sterilization and castration have been synonyms for thousands of years. Making an animal sterile meant to render them incapable of producing offspring. Castration or the physical removal of the testes was discovered to be the most simple but reliable method for managing reproduction and sexual behavior in the male. Today, there continues to be global utilization of castration in domestic animals. More than six hundred million pigs are castrated every year, and surgical removal of testes in dogs and cats is a routine practice in veterinary medicine. However, modern biological research has extended the meaning of sterilization to include methods that spare testis removal and involve a variety of options, from chemical castration and immunocastration to various methods of vasectomy. This review begins with the history of sterilization, showing a direct link between its practice in man and animals. Then, it traces the evolution of concepts for inducing sterility, where research has overlapped with basic studies of reproductive hormones and the discovery of testicular toxicants, some of which serve as sterilizing agents in rodent pests. Finally, the most recent efforts to use the immune system and gene editing to block hormonal stimulation of testis function are discussed. As we respond to the crisis of animal overpopulation and strive for better animal welfare, these novel methods provide optimism for replacing surgical castration in some species. Simple Summary: Stallion mules are infertile but still able to produce testosterone, which influences undesirable behavior. Surgical castration is required to eliminate testosterone synthesis, which results in pain and the risk of postoperative complications. To the best of our knowledge, there are no existing studies regarding immunocastration as an alternative method for surgical castration in mules. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine could be used as a method of immunocastration in stallion mules via the assessment of anti-GnRH antibody concentration, serum testosterone concentration, clinical adverse effects, and changes in the selected behaviors. Intact and unilateral cryptorchid mules received the GnRH vaccine at weeks 0, 4, and 8. The serum testosterone concentrations in GnRH-vaccinated mules were lower than before vaccination from weeks 6 to 14. Subcutaneous edema adjacent to the injection site was observed in intact mules after the second or third vaccination. The stallion mules responded to the GnRH vaccine, resulting in a temporary decrease in serum testosterone. Based on the results of this study, the GnRH vaccine may be administered as a temporary immunocastration method for stallion mules. The serum testosterone concentrations in the Treatment group were lower than before vaccination from weeks 6 to 14. Subcutaneous edema adjacent to the injection site was detected in the Treatment-intact group after booster vaccination. Simple Summary: The Italian pig sector is renowned for dry-cured ham production, which requires heavy pigs (raised for at least nine months and slaughtered at more than 160 kg). Nevertheless, efficiency and utilisation of every part of the pig, including the loin, should be maximised. To avoid boar taint, surgical castration is necessary, albeit raising welfare concerns. Immunocastration offers a promising alternative. This study investigated the effects of immunocastration compared to surgical castration on the chemical composition and fatty acid profile of loins and adipose tissue from Italian heavy pigs. Notably, saturated fatty acids, particularly stearic acid (18:0), were higher in the intramuscular fat (IMF) of the immunocastrated pigs compared to the surgically castrated pigs. Conversely, monounsaturated fatty acids, predominantly oleic acid (18:1n-9), were higher in the IMF from the surgically castrated pigs compared to the immunocastrated pigs. The objective was to evaluate the effect of various castration protocols through a meta-analysis of indicators of daily feed intake, feed conversion, daily weight gain, slaughter weight, hot carcass weight, and carcass yield. 179 publications from three electronic sources (Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science) were reviewed over a 24-year period, out of which the 26 studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. The effect was analyzed with six comparisons: C1=surgical castration vs whole; C2=standard immunocastration vs whole; C3= standard immunocastration vs surgical castration; C4= alternative immunocastration vs whole; C5= alternative immunocastration vs surgical castration, and C6= alternative immunocastration vs standard immunocastration. Simple Summary: This preliminary study investigated the sensory quality perceived by consumers (trained panellists or untrained consumers) of pork loins deriving from animals subjected to different castration methods (surgical vs. immunocastration) and fed different protein sources (soybean vs. pea). The findings revealed that the trained panel could discriminate clearly between dry-cured loin from male pigs surgically castrated and fed a soya diet compared with those fed a pea diet, and the vaccination almost completely reduced most of the sensory traits in both sexes. Additionally, the study found that immunocastration in male pigs did not negatively impact the skatole detection scoring. Moreover, the untrained consumer panel preferred the dry-cured loin from surgically castrated male pigs fed a pea-based diet. To sum up, it is possible to completely replace soybean meal with field peas when feeding heavy immunocastrated male pigs for dry-cured loin production. The study involved a sensory evaluation of six treatments, with a 3 × 2 factorial design, conducted by trained panellists and untrained consumers in Spain (n = 126) and Portugal (n = 80). The consumers were also checked for their skatole sensitivity using a pure substance. The results showed that the pea-based diet was significantly different (p < 0.001) from the soy-based diet, as determined by a trained panel of surgically castrated male pigs, although the immunocastration treatments were not split. Dry-cured loin from immunocastrated male pigs fed with peas was considered tenderer and juicier (p < 0.05) than those fed soya-based diets. The untrained consumer panel scored higher on the sensory traits (flavour, juiciness, and overall liking) from the loin samples of surgically castrated male pigs fed a pea diet. All consumers scored similarly in boar taint detection. This study demonstrates the applicability of the pea-based diet for the feeding of pigs destined for cured meat and highlights immunocastration as a tool that does not compromise the skatole detection score. Immunocastration can be an alternative to surgical castration in Bísaro pigs when there is a need to keep animals on the farm until at least 8 months old. As an autochthonous breed, some particularities must be addressed when doing immunocastration, for which 3 different protocols were tested and two control groups were made with surgically castrated males (SC) and boars (Bo). Two protocols were made in prepubertal pigs, with two (E2) and three inoculations (L3) in the first cycle, and another in adults (A2) with only two inoculations. Physicochemical parameters and boar taint compounds quantification and sensory analysis of the meat from the studied pigs were assessed. Immunocastration provided intermediate values between surgically castrated pigs and entire males, with low levels of boar taint compounds. The L3 group provided closer results to SC, which was also corroborated by the sensory analysis. Although the other two protocols had no significant differences with Bo, there was a positive tendency towards them. The objective of the research work was to evaluate the effect of the dose of an immunocastrator in Cavia Porcellus, females on the productive indices, the experiment was carried out at the PRODUCUY Farm in the Salcedo Canton, three treatments were used: T1 (control), T2 (0.15 cc) and T3 (0.25 cc); which were inoculated subcutaneously with the INNOSURE immunocastrator, a first dose was administered at 30 days of age, and the second 15 days later, the evaluation lasted 70 days, daily weight gain values were recorded for T1 11.1 g, T2 11.4 g, T3 10.7 g, total weight gain of 444.1 g for T1, 456.6 g for T2 and 429.5 g for T3, with a feed conversion of 5.0, 4.8 and 5.0, for each treatment respectively, which shows that there were no significant differences between groups, in the same way the carcass yield (%) was identified as follows: 72.0 for T1, 72.3% for T2 and 70.9% for T3, and although there are significant differences in the C/B variable, the control T1 and T2 (0.15 cc) did not indicate losses in the experiment, because each dollar invested was recovered, a difference from T3 with a C/B of $0.90, this because there was no significant increase in productive parameters, research c It is concluded that the subcutaneous inoculation of the INNOSURE immunocastrator in female guinea pigs did not influence the productive parameters (weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, carcass yield and cost benefit (C/B). Background: Animal reproduction performance is crucial in husbandry. Immunocastrated animals serve as an ideal animal model for studying testicular function. During androgen suppression, the testis undergoes dramatic developmental and structural changes, including the inhibition of hormone secretion and spermatogenesis. Methods: To characterize this process, we investigated the effects of castration using a recombinant B2L and KISS1 DNA vaccine, and then identified functional genes in the testes of Yiling goats using RNA-seq and WGS. The experimental animals were divided into three groups: the PVAX-asd group (control), PBK-asd-immunized group, and surgically castrated group. Results: The results demonstrated that the administration of the recombinant PBK-asd vaccine in goats elicited a significant antibody response, and reduced serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), resulting in smaller scrotal circumferences and decreased sexual desire compared to the control group. In addition, RNA transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis of the testes revealed that the biological processes after immunocastration mainly focused on the regulation of cell matrix adhesion, histone acetylation, negative regulation of developmental processes, apoptosis, and activation of the complement system and the thrombin cascade reaction system. Then, we integrated the whole-genome sequencing and testis transcriptome, and identified several candidate genes (FGF9, FST, KIT, TH, TCP1, PLEKHA1, TMEM119, ESR1, TIPARP, LEP) that influence steroidogenesis secretion and spermatogenesis. Conclusions: Multiple pathways and polygenic co-expression participate in the response to castration vaccines, altering hormone secretion and spermatogenesis. Taken together, our atlas of the immunocastration goat testis provides multiple insights into the developmental changes and key factors accompanying androgen suppression, and thus may contribute to understanding the genetic mechanism of testis function. The article investigated the dependence of the histological structure of m. Longissimus thoracis muscle in immunocastrated pigs vaccinated with the “Improvak” vaccine from the company “Zoetis”, USA, and in non-castrated pigs fattened under the conditions of industrial pork production and slaughtered at different live weights. For the study, two experimental groups of 220 gilts each were formed, derived from Irish Landrace and Irish Yorkshire sows and inseminated with semen from boars of the MakGro synthetic line. At the age of 72 days, with an average live weight of 26 kg, they were brought to a fattening farm where the piglets of the research group were vaccinated on the 112th day of life with the vaccine “Improvak” from the company “Zoetis”, USA, in a quantity of 2 ml. They were re-vaccinated on the 148th day of life with the same vaccine and in the same quantity. The pigs in the control group were not castrated. It was found that in m. Longissimus thoracis muscle of immunocastrated pigs using the “Improvak” vaccine, the diameter of the muscle fibres decreased by 15 micrometres and the fibres absorbed more sarcoplasm, which, against the background of a 14 % increase in the content of parenchymal components, indicates an increase in the juiciness and tenderness of the meat. It has been shown that the muscle fibres of the longissimus thoracis no longer grow as a result of the immunocastration of pigs, but take on useful properties, i.e. become hydrated and fat. The main purpose of the experiment carried out was to study the effects of immunological castration of gilts on the histological indicators of the muscle tissue of m. Longissimus thoracis muscle tissue compared to non-castrated animals. For the study, 440 pigs were collected, which were initially divided into two groups of 220 animals each, one of which was immunologically castrated and the other not castrated. At the end of fattening, the group of immunocastrated and non-castrated gilts was divided by weight into groups of 110 and 130 kg, resulting in four groups: noncastrated gilts with a live weight of 110 kg, non-castrated gilts with a live weight of 130 kg, immunocastrated gilts with a live weight of 110 kg and immunocastrated gilts of 130 kg. After slaughter, histological sections of the longest dorsal muscle were taken and light-optical and morphometric examinations, luminescence microscopy with microphotography of m. Longissimus thoracis muscle were carried out. As a result of the experiments, it was found that as a result of immunological castration of gilts with the Improvak vaccine, the muscle fibre diameter decreased by 15 μm and the muscle fibres absorbed a larger amount of sarcoplasm, which, against the background of an increase in the content of the parenchymal component (by 14%), indicates an increase in the juiciness and tenderness of the meat. Androgen from the testis and weak androgens from the adrenal cortex may interact with each other and affect their synthesis and secretion due to their similar functions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the compensatory effect of adrenal in rats after immunocastration and surgical castration, and the interaction between the hypothalamic–pituitary–testis (HPT) axis and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis. 24 male SD rats aged 8 weeks were randomly divided into three groups and accepted treatments: surgical castration group, immunocastration group and control group. In both surgical castration and immunocastration groups, the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) hormones was significantly increased compared with the control group (p < 0.05). In the HPT axis of the immunocastration group, the KISS1 expression was up-regulated, whereas GPR54, LH and LHR expression were down-regulated (p < 0.05). The expression levels of CRH, POMC and MC2R genes were also significantly up-regulated (p < 0.05). In addition, in the immunocastration group, the expression of adrenal LHR mRNA expression was decreased (p < 0.05). The expression of HPT axis genes and adrenal LHR were up-regulated in the surgical castration group (p < 0.05). These results show that in both immunocastration and surgical castration, adrenal androgen is increased, suggesting that the adrenal gland plays a compensatory role. The untrained consumer panel scored higher on the sensory traits (flavour, juiciness, and overall liking) from the loin samples of surgically castrated male pigs fed a pea diet. All consumers scored similarly in boar taint detection. This study demonstrates the applicability of the pea-based diet for the feeding of pigs destined for cured meat and highlights immunocastration as a tool that does not compromise the skatole detection score.

Castration of male animals is intended to produce high-enhance quality of animal meat, prevent unpleasant taste, reduce aggressive behavior, and manage overbreeding. Over the years, Tranditional methods of mechanical and surgical castration have been employed over the years, but they fall short of meeting animal welfare requirements due to the associated risk of infection, pain, and stress. Immunocastration, specifically Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-immunocastration, targeting the hypothalamic–pituitary-testis (HPT) axis, has emerged as an animal-friendly alternative to surgical castration, effectively addressing these issues. This review seeks to systematically summarize the principles, development, current applications and challenges of GnRH-immunocastration, offering insights into its role in promoting animal welfare.

Simple Summary: Alternatives to surgical castration of piglets present a challenge for control of boar taint. In this study, the proportion of animals with androstenone levels above the risk threshold for boar taint (>0.5 µg/g fat) was found to be less than 5% in immunocastrated animals (ICs), and testicular weight was a reliable indicator of androstenone-positive carcasses. In contrast, in the entire males (EMs), the proportion of animals with androstenone levels above the risk threshold was much higher (approximately 80%), and the difference in testicular size between EMs with androstenone levels below and above the risk threshold was less pronounced. However, the pelvic urogenital tract weight was reliable in these animals. We thus propose that pelvic urogenital tract and testes weights may be considered a simple, reliable, and time- as well as cost-efficient morphometric indicator for the identification of androstenone-positive carcasses for both ICs and EMs at the slaughter line. Immunocastration and rearing of entire males (EMs) are sustainable alternatives to surgical castration. However, these animal carcasses have variable risk of boar taint and should be identified at the slaughter line. We aimed to identify a simple and reliable indicator of androstenone-related boar taint by evaluating pelvic urogenital tract weight as a marker of boar-taint animals at the slaughter line. The pelvic urogenital tract, testes, and accessory sex glands of EMs and immunocastrates (ICs) were collected, dissected, and weighed, before colorimetric measurements of testicular tissue. Additionally, GnRH antibody titers and testosterone, androstenone, and skatole levels were determined. Our results showed that 81.8% of EMs had androstenone levels above the risk threshold (>0.5 µg/g fat; EM/Ahigh subgroup), whereas in ICs, the C/Ahigh subgroup with androstenone >0.5 µg/g fat accounted for only 4.3%. Androstenone levels correlated negatively with GnRH antibody titers and positively with testosterone levels and reproductive organ weights. Identification of ICs with androstenone levels above the threshold (IC/Ahigh subgroup) may be achieved via testes or pelvic urogenital tract weight measurements. However, in EMs, the latter is a more reliable parameter. A principal component analysis based on these variables and hierarchical clustering also distinguished the Ahigh from the Alow subgroup, irrespective of IC/EM. The findings highlight the possible use of pelvic urogenital tract weight along with testes weight as a simple, reliable, and efficient morphometric indicator for identifying androstenone-positive carcasses of different sex categories. Cryptorchid bulls have low economic value owing to the effects of masculinization. Moreover, surgical removal of an ectopic testis is difficult in certain clinical cases. Recently, immunocastration has garnered popularity as a nonsurgical castration method in pig farming; however, the effects of immunocastration on cryptorchid bulls are yet to be yet. Herein, we investigated endocrine changes due to immunocastration in cryptorchid bulls and studied its effectiveness. This study included 13 Holstein bulls diagnosed with cryptorchidism and classified into two groups based on pubertal period: <8 months of age (pregroup) and =8 months of age (postgroup). Antigonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine was used for immunocastration, and two vaccine doses were administered. Blood testosterone and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were measured and analyzed for endocrine evaluation. The testosterone levels significantly decreased following the start of immunocastration in both groups, thereby confirming the efficacy of antiGnRH vaccination in cryptorchid bulls. The AMH levels significantly increased in the pregroup with two antiGnRH vaccination, suggesting a compensatory response via the neutralization of GnRH antibodies. The AMH levels did not significantly change in the postgroup, indicating the partial suppression of AMH secretion in Sertoli cells during sexual maturation and failure of Sertoli cell maturation. Thus, we successfully restrained the serum testosterone levels in cryptorchid bulls using antiGnRH vaccine. The testosterone levels are a useful indicator of the immunocastration effect on cryptorchid bulls. As gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) regulates the reproductive endocrine system in mammals, it is a target antigen for vaccine formulation. Through this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a recombinant subunit GnRH-1 vaccine for the immunocastration of the reproductive function of 16 mixed-breed dogs (Canis familiaris) provided voluntarily by different households. All the dogs were deemed clinically healthy prior to and during the experiment. A specific anti-GnRH immune response was detected at Week 4, which was maintained for at least 24 weeks after vaccination. Moreover, decreased levels of sexual hormones (testosterone as well as progesterone and estrogen, respectively) were observed in both male and female dogs. Estrous suppression was apparent in female dogs, and testicular atrophy and poor semen quality (concentration, abnormality, and viability) were observed in male dogs. In conclusion, the recombinant subunit GnRH-1 vaccine could successfully suppress fertility and delay the estrous cycle in canines. Background: Animal reproduction performance is crucial in husbandry. Immunocastrated animals serve as an ideal animal model for studying testicular function. During androgen suppression, the testis undergoes dramatic developmental and structural changes, including the inhibition of hormone secretion and spermatogenesis. Methods: To characterize this process, we investigated the effects of castration using a recombinant B2L and KISS1 DNA vaccine, and then identified functional genes in the testes of Yiling goats using RNA-seq and WGS. The experimental animals were divided into three groups: the PVAX-asd group (control), PBK-asd-immunized group, and surgically castrated group. Results: The results demonstrated that the administration of the recombinant PBK-asd vaccine in goats elicited a significant antibody response, and reduced serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), resulting in smaller scrotal circumferences and decreased sexual desire compared to the control group. In addition, RNA transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis of the testes revealed that the biological processes after immunocastration mainly focused on the regulation of cell matrix adhesion, histone acetylation, negative regulation of developmental processes, apoptosis, and activation of the complement system and the thrombin cascade reaction system. Then, we integrated the whole-genome sequencing and testis transcriptome, and identified several candidate genes (FGF9, FST, KIT, TH, TCP1, PLEKHA1, TMEM119, ESR1, TIPARP, LEP) that influence steroidogenesis secretion and spermatogenesis. Conclusions: Multiple pathways and polygenic co-expression participate in the response to castration vaccines, altering hormone secretion and spermatogenesis. Taken together, our atlas of the immunocastration goat testis provides multiple insights into the developmental changes and key factors accompanying androgen suppression, and thus may contribute to understanding the genetic mechanism of testis function. Joint analysis of whole genome sequencing and RNA-seq enables reliable screening of candidate genes, benefiting future genome-assisted breeding of goats.

The present study aimed to reveal the effects of immunocastration on the development of the immune system in rats. Seventy rats were randomly assigned into two groups: Control (n = 35) and immunized (n = 35). Twenty-day-old rats were immunized with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and booster immunization was administered every two weeks (three immunizations in total). From 20-day-old rats, we collected samples every two weeks, including five immunized rats and five control rats (seven collections in total). We collected blood samples, testicles, thymuses, and spleens. The results showed that GnRH immunization increased the GnRH antibody titers and reduced the testosterone concentration (both P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the number of CD4+CD8- cells, CD4-CD8+ cells, and CD4+CD8+ cells increased (P < 0.05) whereas the number of CD4-CD8- cells and CD4+CD25+ cells reduced in the immunized group (P < 0.05) over time. GnRH immunization also increased the relative weights of thymus and spleen (P < 0.05), serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17 and Interferon-g (IFN-g) over time (P < 0.05), and changed the mRNA levels of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6. IL-10, IL-17, IFN-g, CD4, D8, CD19 GnRH, and GnRH receptor (GnRH-R) in thymus and spleen. Thus, GnRH immunization enhanced the immune markers in thymus, spleen, and blood immune cytokines in rats. The main objective of this study was to describe tissue thicknesses of cadaver heads from physically castrated market barrows (PC MARKET BARROWS) and immunocastrated boars (IC BOARS) at the frontal penetrating captive bolt (PCB) placement. Other objectives were to describe differences in bolt force and energy requirements to penetrate and describe potential for bolt-thalamus contact. Forty-four heads were obtained from PC MARKET BARROWS (n  = 22) and IC BOARS (n  = 22) of similar age and size that were rendered insensible with CO2. Mean HCW was 117.32 ± 3.52 kg. Snout to poll distance (cm) and maximum deflection distance (cm) were collected in duplicate. Heads were split at midline with a bandsaw and soft tissue and cranial thicknesses were measured with a digital caliper. Images of each cut surface were collected to evaluate the potential for thalamic damage. Tissue samples were retained from each half of each head and a universal tester was used to determine maximum force and energy of bolt penetration. There was no evidence to support a significant difference (P  > 0.05) in tissue thicknesses between PC MARKET BARROWS and IC BOARS. Maximum deflection distance (maximum distance from a straight edge that was placed from the tip of the snout to the poll of the head) was not different (P  = 0.10) between PC MARKET BARROWS (3.31 ± 0.10 cm) and IC BOARS (3.08 ± 0.10 cm). There was no evidence to support a difference (P =  0.77) in maximum force between PC MARKET BARROWS (7130.32 ± 483.23 N) and IC BOARS (6974.60 ± 463.70 N). There was also no evidence to support a difference (P   =  0.62) in maximum energy between PC MARKET BARROWS (33.37 ± 2.77 J) and IC BOARS (32.04 ± 2.50 J). For PC MARKET BARROWS, there was a difference (P  = 0.05) between the number of heads where the thalamus was located within the theoretical plane of bolt travel for market placement (21/21) versus mature placement (16/21). For IC BOARS, the number of heads where the thalamus was located within the plane of theoretical bolt path was not different between the two PCB placements (19/21 each). Overall, the data suggest that tissue profiles of PC MARKET BARROWS and IC BOARS do not differ at the frontal PCB placement site and the mechanical tools that are effective for PC MARKET BARROWS should also be effective for IC BOARS. Castration is frequently used to reduce aggressive behavior and improve the meat quality of animals. Traditionally, surgical and mechanical castration are used to sterilize the animals, but these approaches are associated with a high level of pain, stress, long recovery periods, and post-operative infections. Immunocastration is a new animal-friendly, painless alternative castration technique that is used to prevent undesired sexual behavior, reduce aggressive behavior, prevent unwanted pregnancy, control wildlife populations and wandering species, enhance growth performance, improve meat quality, and treat various sex hormone–dependent disorders. The mechanism of immunocastration includes the immunological block of the hypothalamic-pituitary–gonadal axis (HPG axis) which inhibits gonadotropin secretions, causes atrophy of gonadal tissues, and inhibits gametogenesis, resulting in infertility in both female and male mammals. By the mid-1990s, various immunocastration vaccines have been tested in different animal models to achieve successful castration effects. Recently, genetic immunocastration especially DNA vaccine has gained increasing attention due to its safety, being animal-friendly, and being easy to use. The breeding of entire mail pigs in modern pig farming is based on the quality of their meat, which means improving the carcass composition with more lean meat and more fat of the desired quality, while emphasizing various methods to prevent the appearance of boar taint. This review summarizes the state of research on the type and frequency of problems in the breeding and welfare of entire mail pigs. Observations of the behavior of uncastrated male pigs have shown increased activity, more frequent struggles to establish a hierarchical order, more frequent injuries and an increased degree of lameness compared to castrates and female animals. The influence of the group’s composition on sexual behavior, puberty and premature slaughter was analyzed in detail. It has been found that increased sexually motivated behavior towards pigs from the same box causes higher levels of stress. Observations of slaughtered animals with penile injuries ranging from 3% to 82% have been reported. Studies have been performed on the extent of skin lesions in different groups of animals. The possibility of vaccination against boar taint (immunocastration) was considered. It is concluded that the breeding of entire male pigs seems to be a favorable, future-oriented alternative to conventional surgical castration of pigs, provided that young intact boars are kept in a healthy and socially stable environment with sucient physical resources, as safeguarded by measures of enhanced animal care and management control. Recommendations for the practice are given, based on foreign and our research. They include: early socialisation in stable groups where entire males are separated from females; provision of more space in structured pens and provision of enrichment material for observation, keeping of the necessary hygiene and optimal microclimate, minimization of stress, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Common eland are currently underutilized regarding their meat production potential, despite their nutritious meat. Due to their temperament and adaptability, they are well-represented in commercial farms internationally, for both consumptive and ecotourism purposes. Immunocastration has been utilized as a management strategy in mixed-sex eland herds but its effects on the slaughter performance and cutting yields of common eland males have not yet been described. Furthermore, the ideal age of slaughter for eland males culled out of breeding herds relative to edible carcass product yields has not yet been explored, as it is almost impossible to control the confounding factors under current extensive production conditions within southern Africa. The Common Eland Research Facilities at The Czech University of Life Sciences Prague allows for studies under controlled conditions, with animals which have extensive records. The results indicated that while immunocastration had no influence, age affected the offal yields, primal cut, and dissection yields, as well as the high-value: low-value meat of the carcass, with the latter being in favor of juveniles. However, sub-adult males generated higher individual muscle yields. This study investigated the effects of immunocastration and slaughter age on the carcass yield performance of intensively farmed common eland males. Eighteen male eland (five immunocastrated juveniles, three intact juveniles, five immunocastrated sub-adults, and five intact sub-adults) were finished for four months, after which their carcass, offal, primal cut, and individual muscle yields were determined. Juveniles were ~6 months of age at the start of the experiment, while sub-adults were ~1.5 years old. Primal cuts were dissected to determine the percentage yields of meat, bones (with tendons), separable fat, and trimmings. Immunocastration had no effect on offal or carcass yields. While sub-adults had increased individual muscle yields, juveniles had greater proportionate yields of primal cuts and a greater total high-value: low-value meat ratio. Castration of male animals is a common practice in the meat industry aimed at reducing aggressive behavior, preventing unpleasant flavor, and controlling undesirable breeding. For many years, mechanical castration and surgical castration have been practiced to sterilize the animals. However, these castration methods are not humane because of the associated risk of death, pain, and stress. Recently, immunocastration targeting the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG) axis has been reported as an animal-friendly approach that circumvents many of the concerns with conventional castration, and suggested by researches as an alternative to surgical castration. However, there is no compilation of updated information on the use of immunocastration in sheep and goats. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the developmental process from traditional surgical castration to immunocastration and to screen the process of immune targets. It also compares the respective advantages and disadvantages of traditional castration technologies and immunocastration, in particular including analyses in the characteristics, features application and welfare benefits of immunocastration in sheep and goats were also analyzed.

Surgical castration of male pigs has become increasingly less accepted at present due to the fact that it is a direct animal welfare concern. UE welfare conditions demand that this method be dropped starting 2018 in order to eliminate the stress and associated pain it induces. Immunocastration is one of the alternatives to surgical castration that ensures male pig welfare and eliminates the boar smell of the meat. The objective of this research has been to identify the immunocastration effects on meat quality, compared with the meat from surgically castrated pigs. The animals assessed during research were fattening PIC pigs, grouped into two lots: surgically castrated pigs (SC) and immunocastrated pigs (IC). Pig immunization was achieved by means of ImprovacTM. The results have shown that immunocastrated pigs recorded a 60.2% carcass meat compared to the 59.69% carcass meat achieved in surgically castrated pigs, thus displaying statistically insignificant differences (p>0.05). Fat layer thickness was significantly lower in immunocastrated pigs compared to the marker lot (p≤0.05). Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae lung lesions recorded were lower in immunocastrated pigs compared to the surgically castrated animals (p>0.05). Despite the fact that differences have been statistically insignificant, we are able to confirm that immunocastrated pigs display a lower incidence of respiratory disease compared to surgically castrated pigs. In this study there were not significant differences in meat quality between surgically castrated pigs and immunocastrated pigs.

According to the European and national legislation which set the minimum standards for pig protection, the castration of piglets after the age of seven days must be performed only under prolonged anaesthesia and analgesia. As far as welfare is concerned, pig castration in these conditions is mandatory in order to reduce to the minimum the pain generated by the surgical method itself. Immunocastration is an alternative methods to surgical castration based on the use of antibodies against the gonadotropin releasing hormone (Gn-RH), which once neutralized suppresses testicles development and function and inhibits the smell of boar. The aims of this study were to see the immunocastration effects on productive performance in pigs PIC hybrids. Animals included in the study were PIC fattening pigs, grouped in two groups: A lot (n: 485) - surgically castrated pigs, and B lot (n: 604) - immunocastrated pigs. The fattening technology was identical for all pigs included in this study. Pigs’ immunization was performed using Improvac®. The results obtained showed that A lot recorded a daily average weight gain of 785 g, while loss due to mortality was 2.82 %. In the case of lot B, the recorded daily average weight gain was 834 g (49g higher than the one in lot A), while loss due to mortality were 2.59 % (0.23 % lower than in lot A). Pig immunocastration is an acceptable method as far as welfare standards are concerned, reducing the stress generated by surgical castration. Productive performance in immunocastrated pigs are improved compared to the one of surgically castrated pigs.

Simple Summary: Male cattle (bulls) are often castrated as part of routine herd management. The benefits of this practice include the reduction of aggression and the elimination of unwanted pregnancies. However, castration represents an animal welfare concern as bulls are subjected to pain during and after the procedure. Surgical castration, in particular, places animals at increased risk of hemorrhage and infection. Immunocastration, a method involving vaccination against the hormones that regulate reproduction, offers a reduced-pain alternative to traditional castration, but the current products require multiple doses to effectively reduce fertility for extended periods. In an effort to improve upon current multi-dose immunocastration strategies, we evaluated the efficacy of a single-dose implantable immunocastration vaccine. This implant was designed to reduce fertility without the need for multiple doses, thus improving welfare for the animals as well as safety for producers and clinicians. The results presented here are promising and suggest that further refinement of the immunocastration implant could provide a convenient alternative to current immunocastration strategies. Immunocastration relies on the vaccine-mediated stimulation of an immune response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in order to interrupt spermatogenesis. This approach offers a less painful alternative to traditional castration approaches but the current, commercially available options require multiple doses of vaccine to maintain sterility. Thus, a series of pilot studies were conducted to determine the feasibility of a single-dose immunocastration vaccine implant. These five studies utilized a total of 44 Holstein bulls to determine the optimal vaccine composition and validate the ability of a stainless-steel subcutaneous implant to deliver a vaccine. Outcome measures included the duration of implant retention, scrotal dimensions and temperature, implant site temperature, anti-GnRH antibodies, and serum testosterone concentration. Over the course of several studies, anti-GnRH antibodies were successfully stimulated by vaccine implants. No significant treatment effects on scrotal dimensions or testosterone were detected over time, but changes in spermatogenesis were detected across treatment groups. Results indicate that a single-dose implantable immunocastration vaccine elicits a humoral immune response and could impact spermatogenesis in bulls. These findings provide opportunities for the refinement of this technology to improve implant retention over longer periods of time. Taken together, this approach will offer producers and veterinarians an alternative to physical castration methods, to improve animal welfare during routine livestock management procedures. Simple Summary: Castration of piglets is routinely practiced to prevent the presence of boar taint. In Europe, around 61% of pigs are surgically castrated, 54% of which do not receive any pain-relief therapy. The increasing public awareness towards animal welfare and the ethical characteristics of animal-derived products has led to the necessity of finding more animal-friendly alternatives. Among them, immunocastration, a process of active immunisation leading to the suppression of testicular function, has shown promising results in light pig production, both in terms of animal welfare and productivity. Besides, no study has yet investigated animal welfare in immunocastrated males intended for Italian heavy pig production. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of immunocastration on the welfare of heavy pigs by monitoring behaviour and body lesions in immunocastrated and surgically castrated pigs. Salivary testosterone levels and productive traits were also evaluated. Our results confirmed that immunocastration is a suitable alternative to surgical castration with profitable productive performance, whereas the higher activity of animals and the higher presence of body lesions before the effective immunisation caused an impairment of animal welfare, which should be further investigated as a critical aspect in heavy pig production. Immunocastration has been pointed out as an alternative to surgical castration; though, most of the scientific studies were performed in light pig production. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of immunocastration on animal welfare in heavy pig production through the evaluation of behaviour and body lesions. A total of 188 commercial-hybrid pigs were randomly allocated into two treatment groups: surgical castration (SC) and immunocastration with Improvac® (IC). Data on behaviour, body lesions, and salivary testosterone levels were collected the day before each vaccination at 15, 22, 32, and 36 weeks of age. IC and SC pigs were slaughtered at 40 and 41 weeks of age, respectively; productive and carcass traits data were also collected. Considering productive performance, our results confirmed that IC pigs grew faster and presented a higher weight at slaughter. A critical period for pig welfare was observed before 32 weeks: testosterone concentration and body lesion score were significantly higher in IC pigs compared to SC pigs; active behaviours were significantly more frequent in IC at 15 weeks. Immunocastration may represent a suitable alternative to surgical castration with profitable productive performances, whereas the impairment of welfare during the period before the effective vaccination should be further investigated as a potential critical aspect in heavy pig production. ABSTRACT This study compared the social and feeding behaviour of immunocastrated female pigs using different immunocastration protocols. We used seventy-two gilts from industrial crossbreeding (Agroceres × Topigs) at 15 weeks of age. The pigs were distributed in a randomised design with three treatments. The second dose of the immunocastration vaccine was applied in two groups, six weeks before slaughter (I6) and four weeks before slaughter (I4). A non-immunised group (NI) was used for comparison. Due to the divergence in the time of immunisation between the two groups, an individual comparison of each immunocastrated group with the control group (NI vs. I6 and NI vs. I4) was performed. Social behaviour was analysed through the collection of images by a monitoring camera, and the analysis period was from 6:00 to 18:00 h, with behaviour observed every ten minutes. Feeding behaviour data were collected by the automated FIRE® system. Anti-GnRH immunisation and the different protocols of application did not influence most social and feeding behaviours.

Immunocastration and rearing of entire males (EMs) are sustainable alternatives to surgical castration. However, these animal carcasses have variable risk of boar taint and should be identified at the slaughter line. We aimed to identify a simple and reliable indicator of androstenone-related boar taint by evaluating pelvic urogenital tract weight as a marker of boar-taint animals at the slaughter line. The pelvic urogenital tract, testes, and accessory sex glands of EMs and immunocastrates (ICs) were collected, dissected, and weighed, before colorimetric measurements of testicular tissue. Additionally, GnRH antibody titers and testosterone, androstenone, and skatole levels were determined. Our results showed that 81.8% of EMs had androstenone levels above the risk threshold (>0.5 µg/g fat; EM/Ahigh subgroup), whereas in ICs, the C/Ahigh subgroup with androstenone >0.5 µg/g fat accounted for only 4.3%. Androstenone levels correlated negatively with GnRH antibody titers and positively with testosterone levels and reproductive organ weights. Identification of ICs with androstenone levels above the threshold (IC/Ahigh subgroup) may be achieved via testes or pelvic urogenital tract weight measurements. However, in EMs, the latter is a more reliable parameter. A principal component analysis based on these variables and hierarchical clustering also distinguished the Ahigh from the Alow subgroup, irrespective of IC/EM. The findings highlight the possible use of pelvic urogenital tract weight along with testes weight as a simple, reliable, and efficient morphometric indicator for identifying androstenone-positive carcasses of different sex categories.

In order to determine the influence of the castration method on the indicators of the meat cuts of pig carcasses, two groups of 74 boars were selected. Surgical castration was carried out in one of them, and immunological vaccination method was used in the other group. Both surgically castrated and immunocastrated boars were reared and fattened under the same conditions. And at the end of fattening, they were slaughtered and their carcasses evaluated for weight and proportion of meat cuts separately in the cervical-scapular, back-lumbar and pelvicfemoral thirds. The result of the assessment was the establishment of a significantly higher value of the weight indicators of such meat cuts as single-grade pork from the neck by 0.3 kg or 20.0% (P <0.01) and the weight of lard with skin by 0.6 kg or 13.64 % (P <0.05) in the shoulder-scapular third of the carcass and single-grade pork per 0.2 kg or 15.38% (P <0.05) in the pelvic-femoral third of the carcass in immunocastrated pigs. A significant difference in the weight and content of other meat cuts of carcasses was not established with the use of immuno- and surgical castration of pigs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immunocastration vaccines achieve their effects through neutralization of the endogenous hormone by the humoral antibody produced against the immunized genes, but there is little information regarding cell‐mediated immune response on the gonadal function of the immunized model is available. In this study, we used ram as a model animal to identify the cellular immune response in testicular tissues of rams immunized with intranasal KISS1 gene vaccine. The immune castration model was evaluated by sexual behaviours, spermatogenesis and serum hormone profiles after the KISS1 gene immunization. Transcriptome analysis of testicular tissues was carried out to identify the expressions of protein‐coding genes involved in cellular immunity. The results showed that we successfully constructed the KISS1 immune castration ram model, in which testicular growth and development, testosterone and kisspeptin‐54 levels, and sexual function were suppressed in immunized rams (p <.05). Using Hiseq™ 2000 high sequencing for ram testicular, we identified 21 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to cellular immunity, of which, 14 genes were upregulated and seven genes were downregulated in the testis of the immunized group (p <.05). The Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment showed that these differentially expressed genes were enriched in the antigen presentation process mediated by MHC class I and the cytotoxic pathway mediated by natural killer cells. It is concluded that KISS1 gene vaccine induced the cell‐mediated immune response in testicular tissue to suppress reproductive activities in rams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The clinical efficacy of the use of immunobiological castration was studied in comparison with boars in which orchidectomy was performed by open method «on a ligature», as well as in non-castrated animals. It was found that the disadvantage of surgical castration is the risk of bleeding, the development of purulent inflammatory process (edges of the surgical wound, scrotal tissues, stump, common vaginal membrane), as well as intra- and postoperative hernias, which are accompanied by prolapse of the omentum, intestines, and bladder. The low incidence of these complications is offset by the high death rate caused by them. A relatively high level of cryptorchidism was established on the farm, among which bilateral was 27.6%. As a result of the use of immunological castration, in comparison with surgical castration, and with non-castrated boars, the average daily gains were increased, the fattening period was reduced and feed costs were reduced against the background of feed conversion increase by 14 – 27%. The use of Improvac® (Pfizer Ltd) led to better assimilation of feed, an increase in the amount of meat on the carcass, in particular, lean meat by 12 – 16%, lumbar depth, the protein content in meat and a decrease of the fat percentage and fat thickness, eliminating specific odor, and reduction in the fattening period, as well as costs for feeding. In particular, compared to non-castrated boars, the weight of chilled half carcasses increased by 1.2 times (P < 0.05). Immunological castration led to atrophy of the testicles: their weight, length and width were smaller compared to non-castrated boars, which again confirms a decrease in the level of boars’ sex hormones. It is important to use Improvac® in breeding boars that have exhausted their potential, eliminating the need to keep them for about three months to reduce their meat and lard smell. Reducing the period of disappearance of the odor of products obtained from boars led to a reduction in the cost of feeding, maintenance, and veterinary care. Production indicators justify the economic feasibility of using immunological castration with Improvac® in order to obtain additional income, given the absence of probable complications associated with the conventional surgical procedure.

Background: Salivary gland (SMG) degeneration and dysfunction are common symptoms that occur after sex hormone deprivation, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Additionally, immunocastration, which causes drop of sex hormones, has been developed as an alternative to surgical castration, however whether it exerts similar effects as surgical castration on the salivary glands is unknown. Through histological and RNA-seq analysis, we assessed changes in morphology and transcriptome of SMG in response to immunocastration (IM) versus surgical castration (bilateral orchiectomy, ORC). Results: Compared to entire males (EM), ORC caused severe degeneration of SMG in rats, as evidenced by both decreased (P < 0.01) SMG weight and organ index, and by decreased (P < 0.01) quantity of SMG acini and ducts. IM had minimal effects (P > 0.05) on SMG weight and organ index, but it still caused degeneration (P < 0.05) of the acini and ducts. Even though, the quantity of both SMG acini and ducts was much higher (P < 0.001) in IM than in ORC. Functional enrichment analysis of the common regulated genes by ORC/IM revealed disrupted epithelial cell development, angiogenesis, anatomical structure morphogenesis and enhanced cell death are associated with SMG degeneration in deprivation of androgens. Integrated data analysis shown that there existed a selective hyperfunction of SMG ribosome and mitochondrion in ORC but not in IM, which might be associated with more severe degeneration of SMG in ORC than in IM. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that both surgical castration and immunocastration caused SMG degeneration by disrupting epithelial cell development, angiogenesis, anatomical structure morphogenesis and enhancing cell death. But, surgical castration selectively induced hyperfunction of SMG ribosome and mitochondrion, thus causing more severe degeneration of SMG than immunocastration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to investigate the immunocastration using against gonadotropin-releasing factor (GnRF) with Bopriva® (Zoetis) on the performance of production variables, meat quality, docility, and scrotal circumference in young rams, from Sheep production center “Tupac Amaru”, Junin region, Perú. A total of 60 animals were divided into four treatments: T1, T2, and T3 with 0.50 mL, 0.75 mL, and 1.0 mL of doses with Bopriva®, respectively, and T4 (control - 1.0 mL of placebo (distilled water)), with fifteen animals in each. The variables were measured every 15 days for three months (September to November 2018). Datasets were assessed by one-way ANOVA and subsequent posthoc Tukey´s test to detect significant differences among treatments. The results indicated differences found between treatments with the immunocastration compared with non-castrated animals for final weight, carcass weight and performance, scrotal circumference, and docility. Growth performance and meat quality characteristics were not adversely affected by immunocastration. Likewise, immunocastration with Bopriva proved to be effective to stop scrotal development and consequently reduces the sexual and aggressive behavior of young rams. The dose of 0.5 mL seems to be adequate due showed better performance for most variables compared to other treatments.

Improvac has been tentatively used to immune-castrate roosters. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Improvac affected skeletal muscle development in chickens. The muscle fiber type and size and the expression levels of genes related to muscle development in pectoral and thigh muscles were examined at 5, 9, and 14 wk of age in the control, early, late, and early + late Improvac-treated groups. Immunocastration with Improvac affected the development of thigh muscles and the expression of MYH1B, MSTN, and SM. The cross-sectional area in the early group was significantly larger than in the control group at the 14th week (P < 0.01). Economic margins on pig farms are small, and changing slaughter weights may increase farm profitability. However, one can question if the optimal slaughter weight is the same for each sex. On three farms, crossbred pigs (n = 1128) were used to determine the effect of sex and slaughter weight on performance, carcass quality and gross margin per pig place per year. On each farm, an equal number of entire males (EMs), barrows (BAs), immunocastrates (IC) and gilts (GIs) were housed separately in group pens. Pens were randomly divided into three categories of different slaughter weights: 105, 117 and 130 kg BW. In BA, the high average daily feed intake (ADFI) and the lower capacity to gain muscle led to a higher feed conversion ratio (FCR) and lower lean meat percentage in comparison to EM and IC. In all sexes, ADFI and FCR increased with an increasing slaughter weight but the effect of slaughter weight on carcass quality varied between sexes. In BA and GI, slaughter weight had no effect on carcass quality, but in EM and IC, carcass quality improved at higher slaughter weights. Gross margin per pig place per year was calculated as gross margin per pig × barn turnover per year, taking into account fixed costs per round, feed costs and output price per pig. The slaughter weight that gained the highest gross margin per year differed between sexes. Slaughtering BA and GI at 130 kg BW, compared to 105 or 117 kg BW, decreased the gross margin per pig place per year due to the lower margin per pig and barn turnover at higher weights. In IC and EM, no difference in gross margin per pig place per year could be demonstrated between slaughtering at 105, 117 or 130 kg BW. In IC, the increasing gross margin per pig with increasing slaughter weights counteracted with the lower barn turnover. In EM, gross margin per pig did not differ between slaughter weights, but the effect of barn turnover was too small to demonstrate significant differences between slaughter weights on gross margin per pig place per year. In conclusion, slaughter weight has an impact on profitability in BA and GI: they should not be slaughtered at 130 kg BW but at lower weights, but no effect could be demonstrated in EM and IC.

Immunocastration, a technique consisting of two vaccinations against gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), can be used as alternative to surgical castration of piglets. It reduces boar taint and allows higher economic and ecological efficiency compared to barrows. The feeding strategy of immunocastrates, however, can still be improved. After second vaccination, when immunisation becomes fully effective, feed intake of immunocastrates increases sharply. This study aimed to investigate whether energy intake of immunocastrates after second vaccination could be reduced by lowering the dietary energy level of the finishing phase, without negatively affecting animal performance and quality of pork production. We hypothesised that immunocastrates already reach their limits in voluntary feed intake after second vaccination, and therefore would not be able to compensate the lower dietary energy level, in contrast to barrows. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of high-energy diet (HE, net energy (NE) = 10.2 MJ/kg) compared to low-energy diet (LE, NE = 8.8 MJ/kg) in barrows and immunocastrates and as a reference, gilts and entire male pigs on a standard high-energy diet were included. CP and standardised ileal digestible amino acid levels were similar in both diets. For each treatment, eight pen replicates of six pigs per pen were evaluated on performance, carcass quality, meat and fat quality, digestibility, economic and ecological sustainability, behaviour and effectiveness of immune response. No difference in feed intake of immunocastrates between LE and HE could be demonstrated. As a result, daily energy intake of immunocastrates was higher on HE compared to LE, which resulted in a higher daily gain on HE. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) of immunocastrates on HE did not differ significantly with FCR of entire males. Barrows did not show higher average daily gain on HE compared to LE. Nitrogen efficiency was better in HE compared to LE, without negative effects on digestibility, carcass quality, economic parameters, behaviour or immune response. Small positive effects on the palatability of the meat of immunocastrates on HE were observed, although consumers did not prefer one of both feeds. Immunocastration was successful in reducing sexual and aggressive behaviour as well as in lowering the prevalence of boar taint from 15% in EM to 0% in immunocastrates. However, in two out of 96 immunocastrates (one on HE and one on LE), the immunocastration was not fully effective. In conclusion, this study did not show advantages of feeding immunocastrates or barrows a low-energy diet.

Nutritional requirements of heavy immunocastrated (IM) pigs and therefore appropriate feeding strategies have not yet been determined. Thus, the effects of changes in dietary net energy (NE) content were studied in 41 IM pigs, fed ad libitum diets with low, medium, and high NE content (LNE, MNE, and HNE diets, with 8.5, 9.3, and 10.0 MJ NE/kg, respectively), from 84 days of age until slaughter at an average age of 172 days and an average body weight of 122.5 kg. In the period from 143 to 170 days of age, there was a tendency for a greater NE intake (p = 0.08) in pigs fed the HNE diet along with greater (p < 0.01) backfat gain. Dietary treatment affected carcass composition, as lower backfat thickness (p = 0.01) and lower area of fat over the longissimus muscle (p = 0.05) were observed in the LNE and MNE pigs. In addition, greater lean meat content (p = 0.04) was observed in the LNE pigs. Reducing the NE of the diet by replacement of cereals and soybean meal with high-fiber ingredients resulted in lower indole production in the ascending colon (p < 0.01) and greater skatole production (p < 0.01) in the cecum. Greater villus area, width, height and perimeter, crypt depth, and thickness of the intestinal mucosa in the jejunum, ileum, ascending colon, and descending colon were found in the LNE group (p < 0.01) than in the HNE group, while those in the MNE group was intermediate. Cell proliferation was not affected by dietary treatment (p > 0.05). The present results show that a reduction in dietary NE concentration lowers lipid deposition, without affecting performance or energy efficiency in IM pigs. This technique provides an advantage in terms of improved leanness, without affecting growth rate in IM pigs after immunization, which is particularly important when the backfat thickness is a determinant of carcass value and IM pigs are fattened to higher weights (e.g., in heavy pig production) or when a longer delay between immunization and slaughter is practiced.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate carcass characteristics and meat quality of surgically castrated and immunocastrated male pigs. Data were collected from 24 surgically castrated pigs and 24 immunocastrated male entire originating from the commercial line (Agroceres x Topigs), receiving isonutritive diets and were housed in the same experimental shed, slaughtered at 177 days old, with a slaughter weight of 127.8 (± 6.5) and 135.1 (± 7.8) kg, respectively. Carcass and meat quality characteristics such as carcass yield, lean meat yield, fat content, backfat thickness, muscle depth, pH, meat coloring and, drip, thawing and cooking loss, were evaluated. Immunocastrated pigs have heavier carcass, higher meat yield and lower fat thickness when compared to surgically castrated animals. Regarding meat quality, the immunocastrated presented a lighter meat, less reddness and less water holding capacity. In conclusion, this study confirmed that the carcass of male pigs, submitted immunocastration, has lower yield, however, more meat and less fat content, when compared to carcass of male pigs surgically castrated. Meat quality showed peculiar characteristics for immunocastrated pigs, and can be used more for sausage production, since it retains less water and have smaller redness color compared to surgically castrated pigs.

This study investigated the effects of immunocastration and slaughter age on the carcass yield performance of intensively farmed common eland males. Eighteen male eland (five immunocastrated juveniles, three intact juveniles, five immunocastrated sub-adults, and five intact sub-adults) were finished for four months, after which their carcass, offal, primal cut, and individual muscle yields were determined. Juveniles were ~6 months of age at the start of the experiment, while sub-adults were ~1.5 years old. Primal cuts were dissected to determine the percentage yields of meat, bones (with tendons), separable fat, and trimmings. Immunocastration had no effect on offal or carcass yields. While sub-adults had increased individual muscle yields, juveniles had greater proportionate yields of primal cuts and a greater total high-value: low-value meat ratio. Whilst slaughtering younger male eland could provide additional economic advantages, this should be considered being against changing marketing trends.
