Luktämnen i omgivningen kan utgöra distraktorer som försämrar den kognitiva prestationen. Detta gör luktens påverkan till en viktig arbetsmiljöfråga. De flesta vänjer sig vid lukter i omgivningen – de habituerar. Men ibland sker inte denna tillvänjning. Syftet var att undersöka ifall det finns ett samband mellan skillnad i habituering till ett luktämne och arbetsminne och inhibering. En grupp av 40 individer i åldrarna 19 till 64 exponerades för n-butanol under 45 minuter. Deltagarna gjorde upprepade skattningar av luktämnets intensitet och delades in i grupperna: icke-habituerare och habituerare. Före och under exponeringen utförde deltagarna 3-back, ämnat att mäta arbetsminne, och Stroop, ämnat att mäta inhibering. Gruppen icke-habituerare tenderade att prestera sämre på 3-back både före och under exponeringen. Oförmåga till habituering kan vara ett beteendeuttryck för sämre arbetsminneskapacitet och eventuellt andra sårbarhetsfaktorer. Dessa faktorer bör undersökas vidare. Odorants in the environment can serve as distractors that impair cognitive performance. The impact of odors constitute an important occupational health issue. Most people get used to smells in the environment – they habituate. But occasionally habituation does not occur. The aim was to investigate whether there is a correlation between difference in habituation to an odorant and working memory and inhibition. A group of 40 individuals between the ages of 19 to 64, were exposed to n-butanol for 45 minutes. Participants made repeated ratings of intensity of the odorant. Two groups were created based on non-habituation and habituation. Before and during the exposure, the participants performed 3-back, used to measure working memory, and Stroop, used to measure inhibition. The group who did not habituate showed a tendency to perform worse on 3-back, before and during exposure. Inability to habituate may be a behavioral expression of poorer working memory capacity, and possibly other vulnerability factors. These factors should be further investigated.

Traditionellt utvärderas effekter av kognitiv träning med objektiva prestationsmått. Syftet med uppsatsen var att undersöka självskattad exekutiv funktion som ett alternativt mått för att utvärdera effekter av kognitiv träning. Som utfallsmått valdes The behavior rating inventory of executive functioning - self report (BRIEF-SR). Vidare användes blandad design med för- och eftermätning samt tre oberoende grupper. Gymnasieelever (n = 63) delades in i; aktiv träningsgrupp, aktiv placebogrupp och passiv kontrollgrupp. Tränings- och placebogruppen genomförde datoriserad kognitiv träning med respektive utan adaptiv svårighetsgrad. ANCOVA med arbetsminneskapacitet som kovariat visade inga signifikanta träningseffekter på självskattade exekutiva funktioner, oavsett grupptillhörighet. Sammantaget kan BRIEF-SR vara ett lämpligt instrument vid utvärdering av kognitiv träning när ekologisk validitet prioriteras. Resultaten diskuteras avseende inverkan av tid mellan för- och eftermätning, population och förväntanseffekter. Performance based measures have been the Golden standard when evaluating effects of cognitive training. By using The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning-Self Report (BRIEF-SR), this thesis aimed to explore self- rating scales as an alternative when evaluating effects of cognitive training. A sample of high school students (n = 63) and a mixed- effect model with pre- and post-measurements were chosen. The students were divided into three groups: active training, training with placebo or passive control. The two groups in training practiced with a computerized cognitive training program. The two training groups practiced with an adaptive and non-adaptive computer program, respectively. With working memory as covariate ANCOVA reported no significant effects on self-rated executive functions independent of group condition. In sum, if ecological validity is of priority BRIEF-SR can be considered when measuring effects following cognitive training. In addition the results are discussed with regards to time between pre- and post-measurements, population and effects of expectancy. Human chitotriosidase (HCHT) er en av to familie 18 kitinaser, som er produsert av mennesker. Den andre er AMCase. Enzymet er antatt å være en del av det humane immunforsvaret mot sopp og parasitter. Nylig har det blitt vist at nivåene av HCHT bioaktivitet, og proteiner er signifikant økt i sirkulasjon og lunger hos pasienter som lider av systemisk sklerose, og av denne grunn forslått som et terapautisk mål. Det er foretatt en detaljert termodynamisk undersøkelse ved hjelp isoterm titreringskalorimetri med binding av den velkjente familie18 inhibitoren allosamidin til HCHT. Bindingen er vist å være sterkt med en Kd = 0.20 ± 0.03 uM og ΔGr ° = -38,9 ± 0,4 kJ/mol, og drevet av gunstige endringer i entalpi ( ΔHr ° = -50,2 ± 1,2 kJ / mol) og solvatiseringsentropi (- TΔSsolv ° = -41,8 ± 4,4 kJ / mol). Human chitotriosidase (HCHT) is one of two active family 18 chitinases produced by humans, the other being acidic mammalian chitinase (AMCase). The enzyme is thought to be part of the innate human defense mechanism against fungal parasites. Recently, it has been shown that levels of HCHT bioactivity and protein are significantly increased in the circulation and lungs of systemic sclerosis patients and for this reason is a suggested therapeutic target. For this reason, we have undertaken a detailed thermodynamic investigation using isothermal titration calorimetry of the binding interaction of HCHT with the well-known family 18 chitinase inhibitor allosamidin. The binding is shown to be strong (Kd = 0.20 ± 0.03 μM and ΔGr° = −38.9 ± 0.4 kJ/mol) and driven by favorable changes in enthalpy (ΔHr° = −50.2 ± 1.2 kJ/mol) and solvation entropy (−TΔSsolv° = −41.8 ± 4.4 kJ/mol). Hur vi människor förhåller oss till dåtid, framtid och nutid avspeglar vår personlighet och kan länkas samman till vårt psykiska mående. Denna studie syftade till att studera sambanden mellan tidsperspektiv, depression och ångest samt oro och ältande. Vidare ämnade studien att undersöka om en bristande inhiberingsförmåga kan förklara oro och ältande. I studien deltog 65 personer från en icke-klinisk grupp; 44 kvinnor och 21 män i åldrarna 19 till 40 år. De instrument som användes var självskattningsformulären Swedish Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory-II, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Response Style Questionnaire, Pennstate Worry Questionnaire samt Strooptestet Serialt färgordtest. Resultaten visade att oro men även ältande bäst predicerar en negativ framtidsorientering medan ångest och negativ framtidsorientering bäst förklarade oro. Ältande förklarades bäst av negativ framtidsorientering. Gällande inhiberingsförmåga var resultaten motstridiga, vilket tolkades som att fler undersökningar kring exekutiva funktioner, oro och ältande behövs i framtida forskning. Författarna argumenterar för att ännu tydligare samband för ångest och depression skulle kunna hittas i kliniska grupper. Att öka kunskapen om de underliggande mekanismerna kring depression och ångest argumenteras vara av stor betydelse för effektivare klinisk behandling. The way we humans relate to the past, present and future reflect our personality and can be linked with our mental health. The aim of this study was to examine the relations between time perspective, depression, anxiety, worry and rumination. The aim was also to study if a deficient capacity of inhibition could be explained by worry and rumination. The study consisted of 65 participants from a non-clinical sample; 44 women and 21 men in the age of 19 to 40 years. The self report inventories included in the study was Swedish Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory-II, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Response Style Questionnaire and Pennstate Worry Questionnaire, a Colour-Word test measured the Stroop effect. The result indicated that worry but also rumination was the best predictors to a negative future orientation while anxiety and negative future orientation best predicted worry. Rumination was mainly explained by a negative future orientation. The results of the inhibition processes was contradictory. Further research of executive funcions, worry and rumination are needed. The authors are arguing for a stronger relationship between anxiety and depression could be found in a clinical sample. More knowledge about the underlying mechanisms of depression and anxiety is of importance for a more effective clinical treatment. Time Perspective Project

Inhiberingsförmåga, arbetsminne och verbal förmåga testades hos 25 treåringar i syfte att analysera barnens förmåga till inhibering. Tre instrument användes; inhiberingsuppgiften Less is More (en konkret del och en symbolisk del), arbetsminnesuppgiften Mister Peanut samt, för att testa verbal förmåga; deltestet ordigenkänning från WPPSI-III. Hypotesen var att inhiberingsförmåga skulle korrelera med arbetsminneskapacitet. Resultaten visade att ingen skillnad fanns i barnens resultat i det konkreta respektive symboliska deltestet. Arbetsminneskapacitet, liksom verbal förmåga korrelerade med resultaten i den konkreta uppgiften. Ett oväntat fynd visade att resultaten i den konkreta inhiberingsuppgiften påverkades av antal syskon barnen hade. Vidare analyser av den symboliska delen i Less is More behövs eftersom det är tveksamt om uppgiften mäter inhiberingsförmåga.

The microbial transformation of ammonia to nitrate, the nitrification, is a central process in the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle. In a modern wastewater treatment plant, the nitrification process is a key process in the removal of nitrogen and inhibitory compounds in sewage can seriously affect the nitrogen removal. A major sewage cleaning plant in the southern part of Denmark is a recipient of industrial sewage from a major fish meal industry. Severe nitrification inhibition was observed in scrubber water from an incineration of process air, and the processes that lead to the production were stopped. In order to investigate the relation between incineration temperatures and the production of inhibitory compounds, the process air was burned at temperatures from 800°C to 1000°C. The termically affected condensate was collected and the nitrification inhibition effect of the condensate was tested using active sludge from the municipal wastewater cleaning plant. The investigation showed that it is possible to reduce the nitrification inhibition effect considerably by raising the incineration temperature from 800°C to 850°C and in some cases to 900°C. The investigation also showed that a further rise in the temperature beyond 850°C and in some cases 900°C, is unnecessary.
