The mountain communities of late-first millennium bc Italy have been regarded as non-urban societies that reverted to city life mainly owing to Roman intervention. A growing body of archaeological evidence is uncovering the diversity of settlement forms and dynamics in the region's pre-Roman past, which included sites encompassing a range of functions and social agents. This article presents an in-depth, microscale analysis of one such site, Monte Vairano in Samnium, drawing on perspectives from comparative urbanism. Monte Vairano developed urban characteristics such as a complex socioeconomic profile and political cohesion, as well as potentially more unique features such as an apparently balanced distribution of wealth. These results can shed further light on the diversity of ancient urbanization and its sociopolitical implications in late-first millennium bc Italy and the Mediterranean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On December 21st, the mandates of three judges of the Italian Constitutional Court will expire, creating a total of 4 vacancies. While Parliament is responsible for filling the seats, political parties are far from reaching an agreement on who should get appointed. The majority’s strategic obstruction of the appointment process in combination with Meloni’s assertions that it is up to her political majority to “deal the cards” for these elections raise the specter of the Court’s politicization. While the Italian legal system has several safeguards to preserve the impartiality and effectiveness of its Constitutional Court, these do not immunizes it against practices that could slowly and almost imperceptibly undermine its independence.

“Italy Criminalises Surrogacy from Abroad, a Blow to Gay and Infertile Couples.” This was the headline on the New York Times website following the approval of a law in Italy criminalising reproductive tourism. Giorgia Meloni had already introduced the bill, Act no. 824, in the last Parliament, and the current right-wing majority has now passed it. The news has gone around the world. Let us try to understand why.

In July, the Italian Constitutional Court recognised the existence of non-binary people for the first time in Italian history. Although the decision as such is a big step for queer rights in Italy, the Court stops halfway. In contrast to the German “Dritte Option” decision, the Court does not set clear instructions or deadlines for the Parliament. Italy’s current far-right political climate likely means non-binary gender markers will not be introduced by the Italian Parliament anytime soon.

The European Commission's 2024 Annual Rule of Law Report provides some analysis of Italy’s current political and judicial landscape under Meloni’s right wing rule. While the expectations towards the Report were low, the document must be read as a wakeup call, as Italy sets out to be the new Hungary.

Italien diskutiert gerade eine wichtige Reform seiner Verfassung: die Einführung der Direktwahl des Regierungsoberhaupts. Sie soll zusammen mit der Wahl beiden Parlamentskammern stattfinden. Zusätzlich soll die Zusammensetzung der beiden Kammern mit einem in der Verfassung neu zu verankernden „Mehrheitsbonus“ maßgeblich beeinflusst werden. Mit einer Stärkung der Macht des Ministerpräsidenten zulasten staatsoberhäuptlicher Garantiefunktionen würde Italien also nichts an demokratischer Stabilität gewinnen, dafür aber vieles an Ausgewogenheit und checks and balances im politischen System verlieren.

Party bans do not represent a serious threat to neo-fascist movements in Italy. Despite a constitutional provision and an ordinary law regulating the issue, their use has so far been limited to associations of minor size and relevance.

Images of hundreds of men gathering outside the former headquarters of the Italian post-fascist party (Movimento Sociale Italiano – MSI), giving the Roman salute in Acca Larentia (Roma) on the 8th of January 2024, have sparked numerous controversies in Italy. The Roman salute was paired with the Fascist ritual of the “roll call”, whereby a leader calls out the name of a fallen soldier and his comrades shout “presente!”. While one would expect the President of the Senate, facing an incident that stirred political controversy, to reason in more institutional terms rather than strictly legally, La Russa was partially correct in stating that the current Italian legal framework is (still) not sufficiently clear and coherent on the matter.

The principle of universal jurisdiction (UJ) has traditionally been grounded in the idea of a collective response to the most heinous crimes on a global scale. Italy, a country that currently lacks universal jurisdiction for international crimes, is amid deliberations on a proposed bill advocating for the use of universal jurisdiction in cases of surrogacy. This analysis contends that the underlying political motive behind this bill is to curb all forms of same-sex parenthood, inadvertently resulting in a criminal law framework that would specifically impact male-gay couples. Secondly, it draws a parallel with “memory law”, illustrating how legal mechanisms initially established in the enthusiasm of the ‘90s are now being repurposed as instruments for divisive political agendas.

Dans le présent travail nous partons des emplois épistémiques des futurs (simple et antérieur) en français et en italien afin de déterminer le degré de correspondance de leur emploi dans les langues respectives, et, dans une deuxième étape du travail, de déterminer leurs équivalents dans la langue serbe. L’examen des considérations théoriques concernant ces deux formes rend évident que dans les deux langues la construction avec le verbe devoir (it.dovere) est souvent concurrente aux formes étudiées. De ce fait, l’étude de cette construction s’est imposée comme partie nécessaire du présent travail. En s’appuyant sur l’analyse contrastive, nous analysons les exemples extraits d’un corpus composé de romans français et leurs traductions en italien, de romans italiens et leurs traductions en français, et de traductions serbes de toutes les œuvres concernées. L’analyse des exemples du corpus a relevé les faits suivants : Le futur épistémique du français a une distribution différente de celle du futur épistémique de l’italien, l’emploi du futur simple épistémique français ayant disparu dans la langue contemporaine (et étant remplacé par le devoir épistémique) et le futur antérieur épistémique français étant considérablement moins fréquent que le futur antérieur épistémique italien. En italien, les deux formes du futur épistémique restent toujours assez répandues. En serbe, les temps du futur n’ayant pas la capacité d’exprimer la modalité épistémique, c’est la construction mora da suivie du verbe principal conjugué (au temps sur lequel porte la supposition) qui s’est imposée comme marqueur épistémique le plus fréquent, et compatible avec tous les degrés de l’échelle modale épistémique.

Die Arbeit von Harald Bodenschatz (2011) und seinen Mitautor:innen zum Städtebau im faschistischen Italien hat vor zehn Jahren Wegweisendes in der Städtebauhistoriographie geleistet. Nun wurde das seit Jahren vergriffene Buch neu aufgelegt und behutsam erweitert. Es hat viele Folgestudien inspiriert. Eine davon ist die Arbeit der Denkmalpflegerin Birgit Knauer (2022), die sich mit der „Assanierung“ der Stadt Wien im Austrofaschismus auseinandersetzt. Die Werke zeigen, wie Städtebau durch diktatorische Regime benutzt wurde, um Repression auszuüben oder Konsens herzustellen, und als wirtschaftspolitisches Programm der beschleunigten industriellen Entwicklung sowie zur volkswirtschaftlichen Erholung in und nach Krisenzeiten diente. Dabei spielen Propaganda, Geschichtsbilder, Zukunftsverheißungen und nicht zuletzt europäische Netzwerke eine Rolle.

Since the beginning of November, Italy has been discussing a constitutional reform that aims to radically change the Italian governmental system. The bill provides that the Prime Minister (more correctly: the President of the Council of Ministers) is elected by universal suffrage in a popular vote concurrent with the Chamber of Deputies and Senate elections. This move is often referred to in journalism as ‘Premiership’ (Premierato). n this post, I would like to focus less on the characteristics of the alleged ‘Premiership’ and more on the attempt to incorporate detailed electoral rules into the constitution. First, a brief history of the ‘majority prize’ will help the reader to better understand the context in which this reform was born. This will be followed by a critique of the proposal to enshrine the ‘majority prize’ in the constitution. I argue that, as currently drafted, the reform bill risks leading to an unconstitutional constitutional amendment.

L’imitation de la langue parlée que laissent entrevoir certains romans représente une ressource intéressante pour l’apprentissage de la langue voisine. De ce constat l’objectif du travail d’une partie de notre thèse de doctorat a cherché à mettre en place un dispositif pédagogique auprès d’élèves de lycée en France permettant d’utiliser des extraits littéraires comme support pour l’apprentissage de la langue italienne dans sa diversité. Cet article présentera le travail d’une séance effectuée sur le thème du lexique à travers un extrait du roman de Giuliano Pavone, L’eroe dei due mari (2010). L’analyse de fragments d’interactions récoltés en classe permettra de présenter le potentiel didactique d’un tel matériel pour l’apprentissage de la langue voisine, mais également en tant que potentiel réflexif sur la langue première.

In the company of Baudelaire we venture into the dualistic culture that permeates Les Fleurs du Mal. We focus on one of the most representative poems of dualism, the CXIX Abel et Caïn, in order to offer a double translation proposal in French-Italian and French-Spanish combinations. The application of a qualitativecontrastive methodology will allow us to carry out an analysis of poetry to show similarities and divergences between these languages. Subsequently, a detailed philological-translatological analysis of the aforementioned poetry will lead to a double translation, into Italian and Spanish respectively, a contribution with which we intend to make known to the target audience some translations that have been purged of errors and loaded with the immediacy characteristic of the original. Finally, we hope that the result of this research will enable the future reader to enjoy Charles Baudelaire's work through a new approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present work we start from the epistemic uses of future tenses (simple and anterior) in French and Italian in order to determine the degree of correspondence of their use in the respective languages, and, in a second stage of the work, to determine their equivalents in the Serbian language. Examination of the theoretical considerations concerning these two forms makes it clear that in both languages the construction with the verb duty (It. dovere) is often concurrent with the forms studied. Therefore, the study of this construction has become a necessary part of this work. Based on contrastive analysis, we analyse the examples extracted from a corpus consisting of French novels and their translations into Italian, Italian novels and their translations into French, and Serbian translations of all the works concerned. The analysis of the examples of the corpus revealed the following: The French epistemic future has a different distribution than the Italian epistemic future, the use of the French epistemic simple future having disappeared in the contemporary language (and being replaced by the epistemic duty) and the French epistemic future tense being considerably less frequent than the Italian epistemic future tense. In Italian, the two forms of the epistemic future are still quite widespread. In Serbian, the future tenses do not have the capacity to express the epistemic modality, and it is the construction mora da followed by the main conjugated verb (in the tense to which the supposition relates) which has imposed itself as the most frequent epistemic marker, and compatible with all degrees of the epistemic modal scale.
