The central star of the planetary nebula (PN) HuBi 1 has been recently proposed to have experienced a very late thermal pulse (VLTP), but the dilution of the emission of the recent ejecta by that of the surrounding H-rich old outer shell has so far hindered confirming its suspected H-poor nature. We present here an analysis of the optical properties of the ejecta in the innermost regions of HuBi 1 using MEGARA high-dispersion integral field and OSIRIS intermediate-dispersion long-slit spectroscopic observations obtained with the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio de Canarias. The unprecedented tomographic capability of MEGARA to resolve structures in velocity space allowed us to disentangle for the first time the Hα and Hβ emission of the recent ejecta from that of the outer shell. The recent ejecta is found to have much higher extinction than the outer shell, implying the presence of large amounts of dust. The spatial distribution of the emission from the ejecta and the locus of key line ratios in diagnostic diagrams probe the shock excitation of the inner ejecta in HuBi 1, in stark contrast with the photoionization nature of the H-rich outer shell. The abundances of the recent ejecta have been computed using the MAPPINGS V code under a shock scenario. Active galactic nucleus (AGN) bubbles could play an important role in accelerating high-energy cosmic rays (CRs) and galactic feedback. Only in nearby galaxies could we have high enough angular resolution in multiwavelengths to study the sub-kpc environment of the AGN, where the bubbles are produced and strongly interact with the surrounding interstellar medium. In this paper, we present the latest Chandra observations of the Virgo cluster galaxy NGC 4438, which hosts multiscale bubbles detected in various bands. The galaxy also has low current star formation activity, so these bubbles are evidently produced by the AGN rather than a starburst. We present spatially resolved spectral analysis of the Chandra data of the ∼3 arcsec × 5 arcsec (⁠∼200 pc×350 pc⁠) nuclear bubble of NGC 4438. The power-law tail in the X-ray spectra can be most naturally explained as synchrotron emission from high-energy CR leptons. The hot gas temperature increases, while the overall contribution of the non-thermal X-ray emission decreases with the vertical distance from the galactic plane. We calculate the synchrotron cooling time-scale of the CR leptons responsible for the non-thermal hard X-ray emission to be only a few tens to a few hundreds of years. The thermal pressure of the hot gas is about three times the magnetic pressure, but the current data cannot rule out the possibility that they are still in pressure balance. The spatially resolved spectroscopy presented in this paper may have important constraints on how the AGN accelerates CRs and drives outflows. We also discover a transient X-ray source only ∼5 arcsec from the nucleus of NGC 4438. We focus on post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries and study the interaction between the different components of these complex systems. These components comprise the post-AGB primary, a main sequence secondary, a circumbinary disk, as well as a fast bipolar outflow (jet) launched by the companion. We obtained well-sampled time series of high resolution optical spectra over the last decade and these spectra provide the basis of our study. The jet is detected in absorption, at superior conjunction, when the line of sight towards the primary goes through the bipolar cone. Our spectral time series scan the jets during orbital motion. Our spatio-kinematic model is constrained by these dynamical spectra. We complement this with a radiative-transfer model in which the Balmer series are used to derive total mass-loss rates in the jets. The jets are found to be wide and display an angle-dependent density structure with a dense and slower outer region near the jet cone and a fast inner part along the jet symmetry axes. The deprojected outflow velocities confirm that the companions are main sequence companions. The total mass-loss rates are large (10^{-8} and 10^{-5}\,solar mass per year), from which we can infer that the mass-accretion rates onto the companion star must be high as well. The circumbinary disk is likely the main source for the accretion disk around the companion. All systems with full disks that start near the sublimation radius show jets, whereas for systems with evolved transition disks, this lowers to a detection rate of 50%. Objects without an infrared excess do not show jets. We conclude that jet creation in post-AGB binaries is a mainstream process. The interaction between the circumbinary disks and the central binary provide the needed accretion flow, but the presence of a circumbinary disk does not seem to be the only prerequisite to launch a jet., 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present results from six epochs of quasi-simultaneous radio, (sub-)millimetre, infrared, optical, and X-ray observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI~J1535$-$571. These observations show that as the source transitioned through the hard-intermediate X-ray state towards the soft intermediate X-ray state, the jet underwent dramatic and rapid changes. We observed the frequency of the jet spectral break, which corresponds to the most compact region in the jet where particle acceleration begins (higher frequencies indicate closer to the black hole), evolve from the IR band into the radio band (decreasing by $\approx$3 orders of magnitude) in less than a day. During one observational epoch, we found evidence of the jet spectral break evolving in frequency through the radio band. Estimating the magnetic field and size of the particle acceleration region shows that the rapid fading of the high-energy jet emission was not consistent with radiative cooling; instead the particle acceleration region seems to be moving away from the black hole on approximately dynamical timescales. This result suggests that the compact jet quenching is not caused by local changes to the particle acceleration, rather we are observing the acceleration region of the jet travelling away from the black hole with the jet flow. Spectral analysis of the X-ray emission show a gradual softening in the few days before the dramatic jet changes, followed by a more rapid softening $\sim$1--2\,days after the onset of the jet quenching., 17 pages, 6 figures, data provided in the appendices. M31-2015-LRN is a likely stellar merger discovered in the Andromeda Galaxy in 2015. We present new optical to mid-infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy for this event. Archival data shows that the source started to brighten $\sim$2 years before the nova event. During this precursor phase, the source brightened by $\sim$3 mag. The lightcurve at 6 and 1.5 months before the main outburst may show periodicity, with periods of 16$\pm$0.3 and 28.1$\pm$1.4 days respectively. This complex emission may be explained by runaway mass loss from the system after the binary undergoes Roche-lobe overflow, leading the system to coalesce in tens of orbital periods. While the progenitor spectral energy distribution shows no evidence of pre-existing warm dust in system, the remnant forms an optically thick dust shell at $\sim$4 months after the outburst peak. The optical depth of the shell increases dramatically after 1.5 years, suggesting the existence of shocks that enhance the dust formation process. We propose that the merger remnant is likely an inflated giant obscured by a cooling shell of gas with mass $\sim0.2$ M$_{\odot}$ ejected at the onset of the common envelope phase., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. The massive star-forming region W75N (B) is thought to host a cluster of massive protostars (VLA 1, VLA 2, and VLA 3) undergoing different evolutionary stages. In this work, we present radio continuum data with the highest sensitivity and angular resolution obtained to date in this region, using the VLA-A and covering a wide range of frequencies (4-48 GHz), which allowed us to study the morphology and the nature of the emission of the different radio continuum sources. We also performed complementary studies with multi-epoch Very Large Array (VLA) data and Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) archive data at 1.3 mm wavelength. We find that VLA 1 is driving a thermal radio jet at scales of approximate to 0.1 arcsec (approximate to 130 au), but also shows signs of an incipient hypercompact HII region at scales of less than or similar to 1 arcsec (less than or similar to 1300 au). VLA 3 is also driving a thermal radio jet at scales of a few tenths of arcsec (few hundred of au). We conclude that this jet is shock exciting the radio continuum sources Bc and VLA 4 (obscured Herbig-Haro objects), which show proper motions moving outward from VLA 3 at velocities of approximate to 112-118 km s(-1). We performed 3D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of a relativistic electron-proton jet of relatively large radius that carries a helical magnetic field. We focused our investigation on the interaction between the jet and the ambient plasma and explore how the helical magnetic field affects the excitation of kinetic instabilities such as the Weibel instability (WI), the kinetic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (kKHI), and the mushroom instability (MI). In our simulations these kinetic instabilities are indeed excited, and particles are accelerated. At the linear stage we observe recollimation shocks near the centre of the jet. As the electron-proton jet evolves into the deep non-linear stage, the helical magnetic field becomes untangled due to reconnection-like phenomena, and electrons are repeatedly accelerated as they encounter magnetic-reconnection events in the turbulent magnetic field., We appreciate Christoph Kohn's critical reading and fruitful suggestions that improved the contents of this paper. [Context] The bright-rimmed cloud IC 1396N is believed to host one of the few known cases where two bipolar CO outflows driven by young stellar objects collide. The CO outflows are traced by chains of knots of H2 emission, with enhanced emission at the position of the possible collision. [Aims] The aim of this work is to use the proper motions of the H2 knots to confirm the collision scenario. [Methods] A second-epoch H2 image was obtained, and the proper motions of the knots were determined with a time baseline of ~11 yr. We also performed differential photometry on the images to check the flux variability of the knots. [Results] For each outflow (N and S), we classified the knots as pre-collision or post-collision. The axes of the pre-collision knots, the position of the possible collision point, and the axes of the post-collision knots were estimated. The difference between the proper motion direction of the post-collision knots and the position angle from the collision point was also calculated. For some of the knots, we obtained the 3D velocity using the radial velocity derived from H2 spectra. [Conclusions] The velocity pattern of the H2 knots in the area of interaction (post-collision knots) shows a deviation from that of the pre-collision knots, consistent with being a consequence of the interaction between the two outflows. This paper investigates the neutral gas phase of galactic winds via the Na I D$\lambda\lambda 5890,5895${\AA} feature within $z \sim 0.04$ MaNGA galaxies, and directly compares their incidence and strength to the ionized winds detected within the same parent sample. We find evidence for neutral outflows in 127 galaxies ($\sim 5$ per cent of the analysed line-emitting sample). Na I D winds are preferentially seen in galaxies with dustier central regions and both wind phases are more often found in systems with elevated SFR surface densities, especially when there has been a recent upturn in the star formation activity according to the SFR$_{5Myr}$/SFR$_{800Myr}$ parameter. We find the ionized outflow kinematics to be in line with what we measure in the neutral phase. This demonstrates that, despite their small contributions to the total outflow mass budget, there is value to collecting empirical measurements of the ionized wind phase to provide information on the bulk motion in the outflow. Depending on dust corrections applied to the ionized gas diagnostics, the neutral phase has $\sim 1.2 - 1.8$ dex higher mass outflow rates ($\dot{M}_{out}$), on average, compared to the ionized phase. We quantify scaling relations between $\dot{M}_{out}$ and the strengths of the physical wind drivers (SFR, $L_{AGN}$). Using a radial-azimuthal stacking method, and by considering inclination dependencies, we find results consistent with biconical outflows orthogonal to the disk plane. IC 4997 is a planetary nebula well known by its variability. We present high-resolution spectra of IC 4997 obtained in 1993, 2019, and 2020 that reveal changes in the Hα and [N » II] emission line profiles, which had never been reported for this object. The Hα P Cygni emission profile observed in 1993 changed to a single-peaked profile in 2019-2020, implying that the stellar wind has largely weakened. The very broad Hα emission wings narrowed by a factor of ∼2 between 1993 and 2019-2020, indicating that the efficiency of the Rayleigh-Raman scattering has noticeably decreased. A high-velocity [N » II] nebular component detected in 1993 is missing in 2019 and 2020, probably due to a decrease in its electron density. A correlation exists between the strength of the stellar wind and the episodic (∼50-60 yr) variation in the [O » III]λ4363/Hγ line intensity ratio, suggesting that an episodic, smoothly variable stellar wind is the main cause of the variability of IC 4997. Monitoring of that intensity ratio and of the Hα emission line profile in the coming years and new multiwavelength observations are key to unveiling the ongoing processes in IC 4997 and constraining the origin of the wind variability. © ESO 2022., We thank Calar Alto Observatory for allocation of director’s discretionary time to this programme. Context. Protostellar jets are an important agent of star formation feedback, tightly connected with the mass-accretion process. The history of jet formation and mass ejection provides constraints on the mass accretion history and on the nature of the driving source. Aims. We characterize the time-variability of the mass-ejection phenomena at work in the class 0 protostellar phase in order to better understand the dynamics of the outflowing gas and bring more constraints on the origin of the jet chemical composition and the mass accretion history. Methods. Using the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) interferometer, we have observed the emission of the CO 2–1 and SO NJ = 54–43 rotational transitions at an angular resolution of 1.0 00 (820 au) and 0.400 (330 au), respectively, toward the intermediate mass class 0 protostellar system Cep E. Results. The CO high-velocity jet emission reveals a central component of ≤400 au diameter associated with high-velocity molecular knots that is also detected in SO, surrounded by a collimated layer of entrained gas. The gas layer appears to be accelerated along the main axis over a length scale δ0 ∼ 700 au, while its diameter gradually increases up to several 1000 au at 2000 au from the protostar. The jet is fragmented into 18 knots of mass ∼10−3 M, unevenly distributed between the northern and southern lobes, with velocity variations up to 15 km s−1 close to the protostar. This is well below the jet terminal velocities in the northern (+65 km s−1) and southern (-125 km s-1)lobes. The knot interval distribution is approximately bimodal on a timescale of ∼50–80 yr, which is close to the jet driving protostar Cep E-A and ∼150−20 yr at larger distances >1200. The mass-loss rates derived from knot masses are steady overall, with values of 2.7 x 10−5 M yr−1 and 8.9 x 10−6 M yr−1 in the northern and southern lobe, respectively. Conclusions. The interaction of the ambient protostellar material with high-velocity knots drives the formation of a molecular layer around the jet. This accounts for the higher mass-loss rate in the northern lobe. We present CO(2-1) and adjacent continuum observations of 7 nearby radio-quiet type-2 quasars (QSO2s) obtained with ALMA at ~0.2" resolution (370 pc at z~0.1). The CO morphologies are diverse, including disks and interacting systems. Two of the QSO2s are red early-type galaxies with no CO(2-1) detected. In the interacting galaxies, the central kpc contains 18-25% of the total cold molecular gas, whereas in the spirals it is only 5-12%. J1010+0612 and J1430+1339 show double-peaked CO morphologies which do not have optical counterparts. Based on our analysis of the ionized and molecular kinematics and mm continuum emission, these CO morphologies are most likely produced by AGN feedback in the form of outflows, jets, and/or shocks. The CO kinematics of the QSO2s are dominated by rotation but also reveal noncircular motions. According to our analysis of the kinematics, these noncircular motions correspond to molecular outflows mostly coplanar with the CO discs in four of the QSO2s, and either to a coplanar inflow or vertical outflow in the case of J1010+0612. These outflows represent 0.2-0.7% of the QSO2s' total molecular gas mass and have maximum velocities of 200-350 km/s, radii from 0.4 to 1.3 kpc, and outflow rates of 8-16 Msun/yr. These properties are intermediate between those of the mild molecular outflows measured for Seyferts, and the fast and energetic outflows of ULIRGs. This suggests that it is not only AGN luminosity that drives massive molecular outflows. Other factors such as jet power, coupling between winds, jets, and/or ionized outflows and the CO discs, and amount or geometry of dense gas in the nuclear regions might be also relevant. Thus, although we do not find evidence for a significant impact of quasar feedback on the total molecular gas reservoirs and SFRs, it appears to be modifying the distribution of cold molecular gas in the central kpc of the galaxies., Comment: 29 pages including 18 figures, 7 tables and appendices. [Context] Relativistic jets are ubiquitous in the Universe. In microquasars, especially in high-mass X-ray binaries, the interaction of jets with the strong winds driven by the massive and hot companion star in the vicinity of the compact object is fundamental for understanding the jet dynamics, nonthermal emission, and long-term stability. However, the role of the jet magnetic field in this process is unclear. In particular, it is still debated whether the magnetic field favors jet collimation or triggers more instabilities that can jeopardize the jet evolution outside the binary. [Aims] We study the dynamical role of weak and moderate to strong toroidal magnetic fields during the first several hundred seconds of jet propagation through the stellar wind, focusing on the magnetized flow dynamics and the mechanisms of energy conversion. [Methods] We developed the code Lóstrego v1.0, a new 3D relativistic magnetohydrodynamics code to simulate astrophysical plasmas in Cartesian coordinates. Using this tool, we performed the first 3D relativistic magnetohydrodynamics numerical simulations of relativistic magnetized jets propagating through the clumpy stellar wind in a high-mass X-ray binary. To highlight the effect of the magnetic field in the jet dynamics, we compared the results of our analysis with those of previous hydrodynamical simulations. [Result] The overall morphology and dynamics of weakly magnetized jet models is similar to previous hydrodynamical simulations, where the jet head generates a strong shock in the ambient medium and the initial overpressure with respect to the stellar wind drives one or more recollimation shocks. We present the results of simultaneous observations of the transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) candidate CXOU J110926.4-650224 with the XMM-Newton satellite and the MeerKAT telescope. The source was found at an average X-ray luminosity of $L_{\rm X}\simeq7\times10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ over the 0.3-10 keV band (assuming a distance of 4 kpc) and displayed a peculiar variability pattern in the X-ray emission, switching between high, low and flaring modes on timescales of tens of seconds. A radio counterpart was detected at a significance of 7.9$\sigma$ with an average flux density of $\simeq$33$\mu$Jy at 1.28 GHz. It showed variability over the course of hours and emitted a $\simeq$10-min long flare just a few minutes after a brief sequence of multiple X-ray flares. No clear evidence for a significant correlated or anticorrelated variability pattern was found between the X-ray and radio emissions over timescales of tens of minutes and longer. CXOU J110926.4-650224 was undetected at higher radio frequencies in subsequent observations performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, when the source was still in the same X-ray sub-luminous state observed before, down to a flux density upper limit of 15$\mu$Jy at 7.25 GHz (at 3$\sigma$). We compare the radio emission properties of CXOU J110926.4-650224 with those observed in known and candidate tMSPs and discuss physical scenarios that may account for its persistent and flaring radio emissions., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. We characterize mass, momentum, energy and metal outflow rates of multi-phase galactic winds in a suite of FIRE-2 cosmological "zoom-in" simulations from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. We analyze simulations of low-mass dwarfs, intermediate-mass dwarfs, Milky Way-mass halos, and high-redshift massive halos. Consistent with previous work, we find that dwarfs eject about 100 times more gas from their interstellar medium (ISM) than they form in stars, while this mass "loading factor" drops below one in massive galaxies. Most of the mass is carried by the hot phase ($>10^5$ K) in massive halos and the warm phase ($10^3-10^5$ K) in dwarfs; cold outflows ($, Accepted to MNRAS with minor revisions, main body is 25 pages with 14 figures

(Abridged) The question of how most stars in the Universe form remains open. While star formation predominantly occurs in young massive clusters, the current framework focuses on isolated star formation. One way to access the bulk of protostellar activity within star-forming clusters is to trace signposts of active star formation with emission from molecular outflows. These outflows are bright in water emission, providing a direct observational link between nearby and distant galaxies. We propose to utilize the knowledge of local star formation as seen with molecular tracers to explore the nature of star formation in the Universe. We present a large-scale statistical galactic model of emission from galactic active star-forming regions. Our model is built on observations of well-resolved nearby clusters. By simulating emission from molecular outflows, which is known to scale with mass, we create a proxy that can be used to predict the emission from clustered star formation at galactic scales. We evaluated the impact of the most important global-star formation parameters (i.e., initial stellar mass function (IMF), molecular cloud mass distribution, star formation efficiency (SFE), and free-fall time efficiency) on simulation results. We observe that for emission from the para-H2O 202 - 111 line, the IMF and molecular cloud mass distribution have a negligible impact on the emission, both locally and globally, whereas the opposite holds for the SFE and free-fall time efficiency. Moreover, this water transition proves to be a low-contrast tracer of star formation. The fine-tuning of the model and adaptation to morphologies of distant galaxies should result in realistic predictions of observed molecular emission and make the galaxy-in-a-box model a tool to analyze and better understand star formation throughout cosmological times., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 16 pages, 13 figures

We present 2.5-D global, ideal MHD simulations of magnetically and rotationally driven protostellar jets from Keplerian accretion discs, wherein only the initial magnetic field strength at the inner radius of the disc, $B_{\rm i}$, is varied. Using the AMR-MHD code AZEUS, we self-consistently follow the jet evolution into the observational regime ($>10^3\,\mathrm{AU}$) with a spatial dynamic range of $\sim6.5\times10^5$. The simulations reveal a three-component outflow: 1) A hot, dense, super-fast and highly magnetised 'jet core'; 2) a cold, rarefied, trans-fast and highly magnetised 'sheath' surrounding the jet core and extending to a tangential discontinuity; and 3) a warm, dense, trans-slow and weakly magnetised shocked ambient medium entrained by the advancing bow shock. The simulations reveal power-law relationships between $B_{\rm i}$ and the jet advance speed, $v_{\rm jet}$, the average jet rotation speed, $\langle v_\varphi\rangle$, as well as fluxes of mass, momentum, and kinetic energy. Quantities that do not depend on $B_{\rm i}$ include the plasma-$\beta$ of the transported material which, in all cases, seems to asymptote to order unity. Jets are launched by a combination of the 'magnetic tower' and 'bead-on-a-wire' mechanisms, with the former accounting for most of the jet acceleration---even for strong fields---and continuing well beyond the fast magnetosonic point. At no time does the leading bow shock leave the domain and, as such, these simulations generate large-scale jets that reproduce many of the observed properties of protostellar jets including their characteristic speeds and transported fluxes., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures. We present Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) 143.5-MHz radio observations of flaring activity during 2019 May from the X-ray binary Cygnus X-3. Similar to radio observations of previous outbursts from Cygnus X-3, we find that this source was significantly variable at low frequencies, reaching a maximum flux density of about 5.8 Jy. We compare our LOFAR light curve with contemporaneous observations taken at 1.25 and 2.3 GHz with the RATAN-600 telescope, and at 15 GHz with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) Large Array. The initial 143.5-MHz flux density level, $\sim$2 Jy, is suggested to be the delayed and possibly blended emission from at least some of the flaring activity that had been detected at higher frequencies before our LOFAR observations had begun. There is also evidence of a delay of more than four days between a bright flare that initially peaked on May 6 at 2.3 and 15 GHz, and the corresponding peak ($\gtrsim$ 5.8 Jy) at 143.5 MHz. From the multi-frequency light curves, we estimate the minimum energy and magnetic field required to produce this flare to be roughly 10$^{44}$ erg and 40 mG, respectively, corresponding to a minimum mean power of $\sim$10$^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Additionally, we show that the broadband radio spectrum evolved over the course of our observing campaign; in particular, the two-point spectral index between 143.5 MHz and 1.25 GHz transitioned from being optically thick to optically thin as the flare simultaneously brightened at 143.5 MHz and faded at GHz frequencies., 14 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The origin of Galactic cosmic rays remains a matter of debate, but supernova remnants are commonly considered to be the main place where high-energy cosmic rays are accelerated. Nevertheless, current models predict cosmic-ray spectra that do not match observations and the efficiency of the acceleration mechanism is still undetermined. On the other hand, the contribution of other kinds of sources to the Galactic cosmic-ray population is still unclear, and merits investigation. In this work we explore a novel mechanism through which microquasars might produce cosmic rays. In this scenario, microquasar jets generate relativistic neutrons, which escape and decay outside the system; protons and electrons, created when these neutrons decay, escape to the interstellar medium as cosmic rays. The most promising scenarios arise in extremely luminous systems ($L_\mathrm{jet} \sim 10^{40}\,\mathrm{erg \, s}^{-1}$), in which the fraction of jet power deposited in cosmic rays can reach $\sim 0.001$. Slow jets ($\Gamma \lesssim 2$, where $\Gamma$ is the bulk Lorentz factor) favour neutron production. The resulting cosmic-ray spectrum is similar for protons and electrons, which share the power in the ratio given by neutron decay. The spectrum peaks at roughly half the minimum energy of the relativistic protons in the jet; it is soft (spectral index $\sim 3$) above this energy, and almost flat below. Values of spectral index steeper than $2$ are possible for cosmic rays in our model and these indeed agree with those required to explain the spectral signatures of Galactic cosmic rays, although only the most extreme microquasars provide power comparable to that of a typical supernova remnant. The mechanism explored in this work may provide stronger and softer cosmic-ray sources in the early Universe, and therefore contribute to the heating and reionisation of the intergalactic medium., Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomía

Context. The Lupus star-forming complex includes some of the closest low-mass star-forming regions, and together they house objects that span evolutionary stages from prestellar to premain sequence. Aims. By studying seven objects in the Lupus clouds from prestellar to protostellar stages, we aim to test if a coherence exists between commonly used evolutionary tracers. Methods. We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the 1.3mm continuum and molecular line emission that probe the dense gas and dust of cores (continuum, C18O, N2D+) and their associated molecular outflows (12CO). Our selection of sources in a common environment, with an identical observing strategy, allows for a consistent comparison across different evolutionary stages. We complement our study with continuum and line emission from the ALMA archive in different bands. Results. The quality of the ALMA molecular data allows us to reveal the nature of the molecular outflows in the sample by studying their morphology and kinematics, through interferometric mosaics covering their full extent. The interferometric images in IRAS 15398-3359 appear to show that it drives a precessing episodic jet-driven outflow with at least four ejections separated by periods of time between 50 and 80 yr, while data in IRAS 16059-3857 show similarities with a wide-angle wind model also showing signs of being episodic. The outflow of J160115-41523 could be better explained with the wide-angle wind model as well, but new observations are needed to further explore its nature. We find that the most common evolutionary tracers in the literature are useful for broad evolutionary classifications, but they are not consistent with each other to provide enough granularity to disentangle a different evolutionary stage of sources that belong to the same Class (0, I, II, or III). The evolutionary classification revealed by our analysis coincides with those determined by previous studies for all of our sources except J160115-41523. Outflow properties used as protostellar age tracers, such as mass, momentum, energy, and opening angle, may suffer from differences in the nature of each outflow and, therefore, detailed observations are needed to refine evolutionary classifications. We found both AzTEC-lup1-2 and AzTEC-lup3-5 to be in the prestellar stage, with the possibility that the latter is a more evolved source. IRAS 15398-3359, IRAS 16059-3857, and J160115-41523, which have clearly detected outflows, are Class 0 sources, although, we are not able to determine which is younger and which is older. Finally Sz 102 and Merin 28 are the most evolved sources in our sample and show signs of having associated outflows, which are not as well traced by CO as for the younger sources., Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomía

(abridged) Data and results from the WISH key program are summarized, designed to provide a legacy data set to address its physics and chemistry. WISH targeted ~80 sources along the two axes of luminosity and evolutionary stage: from low- to high-mass protostars and from pre-stellar cores to protoplanetary disks. Lines of H2O, HDO, OH, CO and [O I] were observed with the HIFI and PACS instruments, complemented by molecules that probe UV, X-ray or grain chemistry. Most of the far-infrared water emission from protostars is found to be compact, originating from warm outflowing and shocked gas at high density and temperature in at least two physical components. This gas is not probed by low-J CO lines, only by J>14. Water is a significant, but not dominant, coolant. Its abundance is universally low, of order H2O/H2=2E-6, pointing to shock and outflow cavity models that include UV radiation at 100-1000 times the ISRF. In cold quiescent pre-stellar cores and envelopes, the water abundance structure is accurately probed through velocity-resolved line profiles, confirming basic chemistry networks. The gaseous HDO/H2O ratio of 0.025, much higher than that of bulk ice, is representative of the outer photodesorbed ice layers and cold chemistry. Water abundances in the inner hot cores are high, but with variations from 5E-6 to 2E-4. Combined analyses of water gas and ice show that up to 50% of the oxygen budget may be missing, with possible explanations discussed. Water vapor emission from disks is weak, indicating that water ice is locked up in larger pebbles early on and that these pebbles have settled and drifted inward by the Class II stage. Quantitatively, many oceans of water ice are available. Extragalactic low-J H2O emission is mostly compact and collisionally excited. HCN and its isomer HNC play an important role in molecular cloud chemistry and the formation of more complex molecules. We investigate here the impact of protostellar shocks on the HCN and HNC abundances from high-sensitivity IRAM 30m observations of the prototypical shock region L1157-B1 and the envelope of the associated Class 0 protostar, as a proxy for the pre-shock gas. The isotopologues H$^{12}$CN, HN$^{12}$C, H$^{13}$CN, HN$^{13}$C, HC$^{15}$N, H$^{15}$NC, DCN and DNC were all detected towards both regions. Abundances and excitation conditions were obtained from radiative transfer analysis of molecular line emission under the assumption of Local Thermodynamical Equilibrium. In the pre-shock gas, the abundances of the HCN and HNC isotopologues are similar to those encountered in dark clouds, with a HCN/HNC abundance ratio $\approx 1$ for all isotopologues. A strong D-enrichment (D/H$\approx 0.06$) is measured in the pre-shock gas. There is no evidence of $^{15}$N fractionation neither in the quiescent nor in the shocked gas. At the passage of the shock, the HCN and HNC abundances increase in the gas phase in different manners so that the HCN/HNC relative abundance ratio increases by a factor 20. The gas-grain chemical and shock model UCLCHEM allows us to reproduce the observed trends for a C-type shock with pre-shock density $n$(H)= $10^5$cm$^{-3}$ and shock velocity $V_s= 40$km/s. We conclude that the HCN/HNC variations across the shock are mainly caused by the sputtering of the grain mantle material in relation with the history of the grain ices., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. We present an analysis of the mid-infrared properties of the youngest radio galaxies, based on low-resolution data provided by the WISE satellite. We restrict our analysis to sources with available X-ray data that constitute the earliest phase of radio galaxy evolution, that is, those classified as gigahertz peaked spectrum and/or compact symmetric objects. We compare the MIR color distribution in our sample to that in the general population of local active galactic nuclei (AGN), in the population of evolved FR II radio galaxies, and also in the population of radio galaxies with recurrent jet activity. We conclude that the triggering of radio jets in AGN does not differentiate between elliptical hosts with substantially different fractions of young stars; instead there is a relationship between the jet duty cycle and the ongoing star formation.

[Context] Jets and outflows are associated with young stellar objects across the stellar mass spectrum, from brown dwarf protostars to massive Ae/Be stars. Frequently the jet morphology is spatially discontinuous because of the temporal variability of the ejection from the driving source. Images covering a wide field of view around the jet-driving source are useful to map the large-scale jet emission and to explore the mass ejection history. [Aims] The aim of our work was to search for large-scale optical Herbig-Haro (HH) objects lying in a wide field around a sample of IRAS sources, which are candidates to trace young stellar objects. [Methods] Deep narrowband images through the Hα and [S II] emission lines, and through an off-line continuum filter, covering a wide (~15′) field around the IRAS targets were acquired. The images in the three filters were analyzed to identify shock-excited line emission (i.e., HH) in contrast to scattered line emission. [Results] New images of a sample of 15 IRAS sources, obtained in a homogeneous way are presented. HH emission was detected in six fields, and the astrometry of the knot features is given. The nature of the extended emission as scattered emission around nine of the IRAS targets is confirmed. For seven IRAS sources with unclear optical counterparts, a more plausible counterpart is proposed. A refined value of the source distance is reported for seven targets. An update of the main data available for each of the sampled fields, including images from public data archives, is also presented.

Some luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) host extremely compact (r < 100 pc) and dusty nuclei. The high extinction associated with large column densities of gas and dust toward these objects render them hard to detect at many wavelengths. The intense infrared radiation arising from warm dust in these sources can provide a significant fraction of the bolometric luminosity of the galaxy and is prone to excite vibrational levels of molecules such as HCN. This results in emission from the rotational transitions of vibrationally excited HCN (HCN-vib); the brightest emission is found in compact obscured nuclei (CONs; ςHCN-vib > 1 L⊙ pc-2 in the J = 3-2 transition). However, there have been no systematic searches for CONs, and it is unknown how common they are. Aims. We aim to establish how common CONs are in the local Universe (z < 0.08), and whether their prevalence depends on the luminosity or other properties of the host galaxy. Methods. We conducted an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array survey of the rotational J = 3-2 transition of HCN-vib in a volume-limited sample of 46 far-infrared luminous galaxies. Results. Compact obscured nuclei are identified in 38-13+18% of the ULIRGs, 21-6+12% of the LIRGs, and 0-0+9% of the lower luminosity galaxies. We find no dependence on the inclination of the host galaxy, but strong evidence of lower IRAS 25 μm to 60 μm flux density ratios (f25/f60) in CONs (with the exception of one galaxy, NGC 4418) compared to the rest of the sample. Furthermore, we find that CONs have stronger silicate features (s9.7 μm), but similar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon equivalent widths (EQW6.2 μm) compared to other galaxies. Along with signatures of molecular inflows seen in the far-infrared in most CONs, submillimeter observations also reveal compact, often collimated, outflows. Conclusions. In the local Universe, CONs are primarily found in (U)LIRGs, in which they are remarkably common. As such systems are often highly disturbed, inclinations are difficult to estimate, and high-resolution continuum observations of the individual nuclei are required to determine if the CON phenomenon is related to the inclinations of the nuclear disks. Further studies of the in- A nd outflow properties of CONs should also be conducted to investigate how these are connected to each other and to the CON phenomenon. The lower f25/f60 ratios in CONs as well as the results for the mid-infrared diagnostics investigated (EQW6.2 μm and s9.7 μm) are consistent with the notion that large dust columns gradually shift the radiation from the hot nucleus to longer wavelengths, making the mid- A nd far-infrared "photospheres"significantly cooler than the interior regions. In order to gauge the role that active galactic nuclei play in the evolution of galaxies via the effect of kinetic feedback in nearby QSO 2’s (z ∼ 0.3), we observed eight such objects with bolometric luminosities Lbol∼1046ergs−1 using Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph-integral field units. The emission lines were fitted with at least two Gaussian curves, the broadest of which we attributed to gas kinetically disturbed by an outflow. We found that the maximum extent of the outflow ranges from ∼1 to 8 kpc, being ∼0.5±0.3 times the extent of the [OIII] ionized gas region. Our ‘default’ assumptions for the gas density (obtained from the [SII] doublet) and outflow velocities resulted in peak mass outflow rates of M˙defout∼ 3–30 M⊙yr−1 and outflow power of E˙defout∼1041–1043ergs−1⁠. The corresponding kinetic coupling efficiencies are εdeff=E˙defout/Lbol∼7×10−4–0.5 per cent, with the average efficiency being only 0.06 per cent (0.01 per cent median), implying little feedback powers from ionized gas outflows in the host galaxies. We investigated the effects of varying assumptions and calculations on M˙out and E˙out regarding the ionized gas densities, velocities, masses, and inclinations of the outflow relative to the plane of the sky, resulting in average uncertainties of 1 dex. In particular, we found that better indicators of the [OIII] emitting gas density than the default [SII] line ratio, such as the [ArIV] λλ4711,40 line ratio, result in almost an order of magnitude decrease in the εf. The corresponding kinetic coupling efficiencies are εdeff=E˙defout/Lbol∼7×10−4–0.5 per cent, with the average efficiency being only 0.06 per cent (0.01 per cent median), implying little feedback powers from ionized gas outflows in the host galaxies. We investigated the effects of varying assumptions and calculations on M˙out and E˙out regarding the ionized gas densities, velocities, masses, and inclinations of the outflow relative to the plane of the sky, resulting in average uncertainties of 1 dex. In particular, we found that better indicators of the [OIII] emitting gas density than the default [SII] line ratio, such as the [ArIV] λλ4711,40 line ratio, result in almost an order of magnitude decrease in the εf.

The infrared dark cloud (IRDC) SDC335.579-0.292 (hereafter, SDC335) is a massive (similar to 5000 M-circle dot) star-forming cloud which has been found to be globally collapsing towards one of the most massive star forming cores in the Galaxy, which is located at its centre. SDC335 is known to host three high-mass protostellar objects at early stages of their evolution and archival ALMA Cycle 0 data (at similar to 5 resolution) indicate the presence of at least one molecular outflow in the region detected in HNC. Observations of molecular outflows from massive protostellar objects allow us to estimate the accretion rates of the protostars as well as to assess the disruptive impact that stars have on their natal clouds during their formation.Aims. The aim of this work is to identify and analyse the properties of the protostellar-driven molecular outflows within SDC335 and use these outflows to help refine the properties of the young massive protostars in this cloud.Methods. We imaged the molecular outflows in SDC335 using new data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array of SiO and Class I CH3OH maser emission (at a resolution of similar to 3 '') alongside observations of four CO transitions made with the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment and archival Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) CO, (CO)-C-13 (similar to 1 ''), and HNC data. We introduced a generalised argument to constrain outflow inclination angles based on observed outflow properties. We then used the properties of each outflow to infer the accretion rates on the protostellar sources driving them. These accretion properties allowed us to deduce the evolutionary characteristics of the sources. Shock-tracing SiO emission and CH3OH Class I maser emission allowed us to locate regions of interaction between the outflows and material infalling to the central region via the filamentary arms of SDC335.Results. We identify three molecular outflows in SDC335 - one associated with each of the known compact HII regions in the IRDC. These outflows have velocity ranges of similar to 10 km s(-1) and temperatures of similar to 60 K. The two most massive sources (separated by similar to 9000 AU) have outflows with axes which are, in projection, perpendicular. A well-collimated jet-like structure with a velocity gradient of similar to 155 km s(-1) pc(-1) is detected in the lobes of one of the outflows. The outflow properties show that the SDC335 protostars are in the early stages (Class 0) of their evolution, with the potential to form stars in excess of 50 M-circle dot. The measured total accretion rate, inferred from the outflows, onto the protostars is 1.4(+/- 0.1) x 10(-3) M-circle dot yr(-1), which is comparable to the total mass infall rate toward the cloud centre on parsec scales of 2.5(+/- 1.0) x 10(-3) M-circle dot yr(-1), suggesting a near-continuous flow of material from cloud to core scales. Finally, we identify multiple regions where the outflows interact with the infalling material in the cloud's six filamentary arms, creating shocked regions and pumping Class I methanol maser emission. These regions provide useful case studies for future investigations of the disruptive effect of young massive stars on their natal clouds.© A. Context. Recent observational progress has challenged the dust grain-alignment theories used to explain the polarized dust emission routinely observed in star-forming cores. Aims. In an effort to improve our understanding of the dust grain alignment mechanism(s), we have gathered a dozen ALMA maps of (sub)millimeter-wavelength polarized dust emission from Class 0 protostars and carried out a comprehensive statistical analysis of dust polarization quantities. Methods. We analyze the statistical properties of the polarization fraction Pfrac and the dispersion of polarization position angles S. More specifically, we investigate the relationship between S and Pfrac as well as the evolution of the product S × Pfrac as a function of the column density of the gas in the protostellar envelopes. We compare the observed trends with those found in polarization observations of dust in the interstellar medium and in synthetic observations of non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of protostellar cores. Results. We find a significant S Pfrac-0.79 correlation in the polarized dust emission from protostellar envelopes seen with ALMA; the power-law index significantly differs from the one observed by Planck in star-forming clouds. The product S × Pfrac, which is sensitive to the dust grain alignment efficiency, is approximately constant across three orders of magnitude in envelope column density (from NH2 = 1022 cm-2 to NH2 = 1025 cm-2), with a mean value of 0.36-0.17+0.10. This suggests that the grain alignment mechanism producing the bulk of the polarized dust emission in star-forming cores may not systematically depend on the local conditions such as the local gas density. However, in the lowest-luminosity sources in our sample, we find a hint of less efficient dust grain alignment with increasing column density. Our observations and their comparison with synthetic observations of MHD models suggest that the total intensity versus the polarized dust are distributed at different intrinsic spatial scales, which can affect the statistics from the ALMA observations, for example, by producing artificially high Pfrac. Finally, synthetic observations of MHD models implementing radiative alignment torques (RATs) show that the statistical estimator S × Pfrac is sensitive to the strength of the radiation field in the core. Moreover, we find that the simulations with a uniform perfect alignment (PA) of dust grains yield, on average, much higher S × Pfrac values than those implementing RATs; the ALMA values lie among those predicted by PA, and they are significantly higher than the ones obtained with RATs, especially at large column densities. Conclusions. Ultimately, our results suggest that dust alignment mechanism(s) are efficient at producing dust polarized emission in the various local conditions typical of Class 0 protostars. The grain alignment efficiency found in these objects seems to be higher than the efficiency produced by the standard RAT alignment of paramagnetic grains. The accretion phase of star formation is investigated in magnetically-dominated clouds that have an initial subcritical mass-to-flux ratio. We employ nonideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations that include ambipolar diffusion and ohmic dissipation. During the early prestellar phase the mass-to-flux ratio rises toward the critical value for collapse, and during this time the angular momentum of the cloud core is reduced significantly by magnetic braking. Once a protostar is formed in the core, the accretion phase is characterized by the presence of a small amount of angular momentum but a large amount of magnetic flux in the near-protostellar environment. The low angular momentum leads to a very small (or even nonexistent) disk and weak outflow, while the large magnetic flux can lead to an interchange instability that rapidly removes flux from the central region. The effective magnetic braking in the early collapse phase can even lead to a counter-rotating disk and outflow, in which the rotation direction of the disk and outflow is opposite to that of the infalling envelope. The solutions with a counter-rotating disk, tiny disk, or nonexistent disk (direct collapse) are unique outcomes that are realized in collapse from magnetically-dominated clouds with an initial subcritical mass-to-flux ratio., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

A significant fraction of planetary nebulae (PNe) exhibit collimated outflows, distinct narrow kinematical components with notable velocity shifts with respect to the main nebular shells typically associated with low-ionization compact knots and linear or precessing jet-like features. We present here a spatio-kinematical investigation of a sample of 12 PNe with morphologies in emission lines of low-ionization species suggestive of collimated outflows. Using archival narrow-band images and our own high-dispersion long-slit echelle spectra, we confirm the presence of collimated outflows in Hen 2-429, J 320, M 1-66, M 2-40, M 3-1, and NGC 6210 and possibly in NGC 6741, for which the spatio-kinematical data can also be interpreted as a pair of bipolar lobes. The presence of collimated outflows is rejected in Hen 2-47, Hen 2-115, M 1-26, and M 1-37, but their morphology and kinematics are indicative of the action of supersonic outflows that have not been able to pierce through the nebular envelope. In this sense, M 1-66 appears to have experienced a similar interaction between the outflow and nebular envelope, but, as opposed to these four PNe, the outflow has been able to break through the nebular envelope. Young accreting stars drive outflows that collimate into jets, which can be seen hundreds of au from their driving sources. Accretion and outflow activity cease with system age, and it is believed that magneto-centrifugally launched disk winds are critical agents in regulating accretion through the protoplanetary disk. Protostellar jets are well studied in classical T~Tauri stars ($M_\star\lesssim2\,M_\odot$), while few nearby ($d\lesssim150\,$pc) intermediate-mass stars ($M_\star=2-10\,M_\odot$), known as Herbig Ae/Be stars, have detected jets. We report VLT/MUSE observations of the Herbig~Ae/Be star HD~100546 and the discovery of a protostellar jet. The jet is similar in appearance to jets driven by low-mass stars and compares well with the jet of HD~163296, the only other known optical jet from a nearby Herbig~Ae/Be star. We derive a (one-sided) mass-loss rate in the jet of $\log \dot{M}_{jet} \sim -9.5$ (in $M_\odot$\,yr$^{-1}$) and a ratio of outflow to accretion of roughly $3\times10^{-3}$, which is lower than that of CTTS jets. The discovery of the HD~100546 jet is particularly interesting because the protoplanetary disk around HD~100546 shows a large radial gap, spiral structure, and might host a protoplanetary system. A bar-like structure previously seen in H$\alpha$ with VLT/SPHERE shares the jet position angle, likely represents the base of the jet, and suggests a jet-launching region within about 2\,au. Context. Very low-mass stars are known to have jets and outflows, which is indicative of a scaled-down version of low-mass star formation. However, only very few outflows in very low-mass sources are well characterized. Aims. We characterize the bipolar molecular outflow of the very low-mass star Par-Lup3-4, a 0.12 M object known to power an optical jet. Methods. We observed Par-Lup3-4 with ALMA in Bands 6 and 7, detecting both the continuum and CO molecular gas. In particular, we studied three main emission lines: CO(2-1), CO(3-2), and 13 CO(3-2). Results. Our observations reveal for the first time the base of a bipolar molecular outflow in a very low-mass star, as well as a stream of material moving perpendicular to the primary outflow of this source. The primary outflow morphology is consistent with the previously determined jet orientation and disk inclination. The outflow mass is 9.5 × 10 -7 M , with an outflow rate of 4.3 × 10 -9 M yr -1 . A new fitting to the spectral energy distribution suggests that Par-Lup3-4 may be a binary system. Conclusions. We have characterized Par-Lup3-4 in detail, and its properties are consistent with those reported in other very low-mass sources. A prominent jet-driven outflow of CO(2-1) molecular gas is found along the kinematic minor axis of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO 420-G13, at a distance of $340-600\, \rm{pc}$ from the nucleus. The wind morphology resembles a characteristic funnel shape, formed by a highly collimated filamentary emission at the base, likely tracing the jet propagation through a tenuous medium, until a bifurcation point at $440\, \rm{pc}$ where the jet hits a dense molecular core and shatters, dispersing the molecular gas into several clumps and filaments within the expansion cone. We also trace the jet in ionised gas within the inner $\lesssim 340\, \rm{pc}$ using the [NeII]$_{\rm 12.8 \mu m}$ line emission, where the molecular gas follows a circular rotation pattern. The wind outflow carries a mass of $\sim 8 \times 10^6\, \rm{M_\odot}$ at an average wind projected speed of $\sim 160\, \rm{km\,s^{-1}}$, which implies a mass outflow rate of $\sim 14\, \rm{M_\odot\,yr^{-1}}$. Based on the structure of the outflow and the budget of energy and momentum, we discard radiation pressure from the active nucleus, star formation, and supernovae as possible launching mechanisms. ESO 420-G13 is the second case after NGC 1377 where the presence of a previously unknown jet is revealed due to its interaction with the interstellar medium, suggesting that unknown jets in feeble radio nuclei might be more common than expected. Two possible jet-cloud configurations are discussed to explain the presence of an outflow at such distance from the AGN. The outflowing gas will likely not escape, thus a delay in the star formation rather than quenching is expected from this interaction, while the feedback effect would be confined within the central few hundred parsecs of the galaxy., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. We study the efficiency of galactic feedback in the early Universe by stacking the [C II] 158 um emission in a large sample of normal star-forming galaxies at 4 < z < 6 from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate [C II] at Early times (ALPINE) survey. Searching for typical signatures of outflows in the high-velocity tails of the stacked [C II] profile, we observe (i) deviations from a single-component Gaussian model in the combined residuals and (ii) broad emission in the stacked [C II] spectrum, with velocities of |v| 4. From the stacking analysis of the datacubes, we find that the combined [C II] core emission (|v|< 200 km/s) of the higher-SFR galaxies is extended on physical sizes of ~ 30 kpc (diameter scale), well beyond the analogous [C II] core emission of lower-SFR galaxies and the stacked far-infrared continuum. The detection of such extended metal-enriched gas, likely tracing circumgalactic gas enriched by past outflows, corroborates previous similar studies, confirming that baryon cycle and gas exchanges with the circumgalactic medium are at work in normal star-forming galaxies already at early epochs., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures. Context. Low-mass protostars drive powerful molecular outflows that can be observed with millimetre and submillimetre telescopes. Various sulfuretted species are known to be bright in shocks and could be used to infer the physical and chemical conditions throughout the observed outflows. Aims. The evolution of sulfur chemistry is studied along the outflows driven by the NGC 1333-IRAS4A protobinary system located in the Perseus cloud to constrain the physical and chemical processes at work in shocks. Methods. We observed various transitions from OCS, CS, SO, and SO2 towards NGC 1333-IRAS4A in the 1.3, 2, and 3 mm bands using the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array and we interpreted the observations through the use of the Paris-Durham shock model. Results. The targeted species clearly show different spatial emission along the two outflows driven by IRAS4A. OCS is brighter on small and large scales along the south outflow driven by IRAS4A1, whereas SO2 is detected rather along the outflow driven by IRAS4A2 that is extended along the north east-south west direction. SO is detected at extremely high radial velocity up to + 25 km s-1 relative to the source velocity, clearly allowing us to distinguish the two outflows on small scales. Column density ratio maps estimated from a rotational diagram analysis allowed us to confirm a clear gradient of the OCS/SO2 column density ratio between the IRAS4A1 and IRAS4A2 outflows. Analysis assuming non Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium of four SO2 transitions towards several SiO emission peaks suggests that the observed gas should be associated with densities higher than 105 cm-3 and relatively warm (T > 100 K) temperatures in most cases. Conclusions. The observed chemical differentiation between the two outflows of the IRAS4A system could be explained by a different chemical history. The outflow driven by IRAS4A1 is likely younger and more enriched in species initially formed in interstellar ices, such as OCS, and recently sputtered into the shock gas. [Context] Dark matter may consist, at least partially, of primordial black holes formed during the radiation-dominated era. The radiation produced by accretion onto primordial black holes leaves characteristic signatures on the properties of the medium at high redshift, before and after hydrogen recombination. Therefore, reliable modeling of accretion onto these objects is required to obtain robust constraints on their abundance., [Aims] We investigate the effect of mechanical feedback, that is, the impact of outflows (winds and– or –jets) on the medium, on primordial black hole accretion, and thereby on the associated radiation., [Methods] Using analytical and numerical calculations, we studied for the first time the possibility that outflows can reduce the accretion rate of primordial black holes with masses similar to those detected by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration., [Results] Despite the complexity of the accretion rate evolution, mechanical feedback is useful in to significantly reducing the primordial black hole accretion rate, at least by one order of magnitude, when outflows are aligned with the motion of the compact object. If the outflow is perpendicular to the direction of motion, the effect is less important, but it is still non-negligible., [Conclusions] Outflows from primordial black holes, even rather weak ones, can significantly decrease the accretion rate, effectively weakening abundance constraints on these objects. Context. Arp 299 is the brightest luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) within 50 Mpc, with IR luminosity log(LIR/L⊙) = 11.9. It provides a unique laboratory for testing physical processes in merging galaxies. Aims. We study for the first time the low-frequency (∼150 MHz) radio brightness distribution of Arp 299 at subarcsecond resolution, tracing in both compact and extended emission regions the local spectral energy distribution (SED) in order to characterize the dominant emission and absorption processes. Methods. We analysed the spatially resolved emission of Arp 299 revealed by 150 MHz international baseline Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) and 1.4, 5.0, and 8.4 GHz Very Large Array (VLA) observations. Results. We present the first subarcsecond (0.4″ ×100 pc) image of the whole Arp 299 system at 150 MHz. The high surface brightness sensitivity of our LOFAR observations (∼100 μJy beam-1) allowed us to detect all of the nuclear components detected at higher frequencies, as well as the extended steep-spectrum emission surrounding the nuclei. We obtained spatially resolved, two-point spectral index maps for the whole galaxy: the compact nuclei show relatively flat spectra, while the extended, diffuse component shows a steep spectrum. We fitted the radio SED of the nuclear regions using two different models: a continuous free-free medium model and a clumpy model. The continuous model can explain the SED of the nuclei assuming a population of relativistic electrons subjected to synchrotron, bremsstrahlung, and ionization losses. The clumpy model fits assuming relativistic electrons with negligible energy losses, and thermal fractions that are more typical of star-forming galaxies than those required for the continuous model. Conclusions. Doublet line emission and absorption is common in astronomical sources (e.g. [OIII], [OII], NaD, MgII). In many cases, complex kinematics in the emitting source can cause the doublet lines to merge, making characterisation of the source kinematics challenging. Here, we present a non-parametric method for resolving merged doublet emission when the line ratio and wavelength difference is known. The method takes as input only the line ratio and wavelength difference, using these quantities to resolve the components of the doublet without resorting to fitting (e.g. using multiple Gaussians) or making any assumptions about the components' line profiles (save that they are the same for both components). The method is simple, fast and robust. It is also ideal for visualisation. We show that the method recovers line profiles of merged emission lines in simulated data. We also show, using simulated data and mathematical analysis, that the method does not significantly increase noise levels in the extracted lines, and is robust to background contamination. We demonstrate the strength of the method by applying it to strongly merged [OIII] 5007/4959~{\AA} in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Gamma-ray burst (GRB) jets are narrow, and thus typically point away from us. They are initially ultra-relativistic, causing their prompt $\gamma$-ray and early afterglow emission to be beamed away from us. However, as the jet gradually decelerates its beaming cone widens and eventually reaches our line of sight and the afterglow emission may be detected. Such orphan afterglows were not clearly detected so far. Nevertheless, they should be detected in upcoming optical or radio surveys, and it would be challenging to clearly distinguish between them and other types of transients. Therefore, we perform detailed, realistic calculations of the expected afterglow emission from GRB jets viewed at different angles from the jet's symmetry axis. The dynamics are calculated using 2D relativistic hydrodynamics simulations of jets propagating into different power-law external density profiles, $\rho_{\rm ext}\propto{}R^{-k}$ for $k=0,\,1,\,1.5,\,2$, ranging from a uniform ISM-like medium ($k=0$) to a stratified steady stellar-wind like profile ($k=2$). We calculate radio, optical and X-ray lightcurves, and the evolution of the radio afterglow image size, shape and flux centroid. This may help identify misaligned relativistic jets, whether initially ultra-relativistic and producing a GRB for observers within their beam, or (possibly intrinsically more common) moderately relativistic, in either (i) nearby supernovae Ib/c (some of which are associated with long duration GRBs), or (ii) in binary neutron star mergers, which may produce short duration GRBs, and may also be detected in gravitational waves (e.g. GW$\,$170827/GRB$\,$170817A with a weak prompt $\gamma$-ray emission may harbor an off-axis jet)., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; accepted to MNRAS; new section added on the scaling of our results with the model parameters and degeneracies

Context: Ultraviolet radiation (UV) influences the physics and chemistry of star-forming regions, but its properties and significance in the immediate surroundings of low-mass protostars are still poorly understood. Aims: We aim to extend the use of the CN/HCN ratio, already established for high-mass protostars, to the low-mass regime to trace and characterize the UV field around low-mass protostars on $\sim 0.6\times0.6$ pc scales. Methods: We present $5'\times5'$ maps of the Serpens Main Cloud encompassing 10 protostars observed with the EMIR receiver at the IRAM 30 m telescope in CN 1-0, HCN 1-0, CS 3-2, and some of their isotopologues. The radiative-transfer code RADEX and the chemical model Nahoon are used to determine column densities of molecules, gas temperature and density, and the UV field strength, $G_\mathrm{0}$. Results: The spatial distribution of HCN and CS are well-correlated with CO 6-5 emission that traces outflows. The CN emission is extended from the central protostars to their immediate surroundings also tracing outflows, likely as a product of HCN photodissociation. The ratio of CN to HCN total column densities ranges from $\sim$1 to 12 corresponding to G$_0$ $\approx$ $10^{1}-10^{3}$ for gas densities and temperatures typical for outflows of low-mass protostars. Conclusions: UV radiation associated with protostars and their outflows is indirectly identified in a significant part of the Serpens Main low-mass star-forming region. Its strength is consistent with the values obtained from the OH and H$_2$O ratios observed with Herschel and compared with models of UV-illuminated shocks. Central molecular outflows in spiral galaxies are assumed to modulate their host galaxy's star formation rate by removing gas from the inner region of the galaxy. Outflows consisting of different gas phases appear to be a common feature in local galaxies, yet, little is known about the frequency of molecular outflows in main sequence galaxies in the nearby universe. We develop a rigorous set of selection criteria, which allow the reliable identification of outflows in large samples of galaxies. Our criteria make use of central spectra, position-velocity diagrams and velocity-integrated intensity maps (line-wing maps). We use this method on high-angular resolution CO(2-1) observations from the PHANGS-ALMA survey, which provides observations of the molecular gas for a homogeneous sample of 90 nearby main sequence galaxies at a resolution of ${\sim}100\,$pc. We find correlations between the assigned outflow confidence and stellar mass or global star formation rate (SFR). We determine the frequency of central molecular outflows to be $25\pm2$% considering all outflow candidates, or $20\pm2$% for secure outflows only. Our resulting outflow candidate sample of $16{-}20$ galaxies shows an overall enhanced fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGN) (50%) and bars (89%) compared to the full sample (galaxies with AGN: 24%, with bar: 61%). We extend the trend between mass outflow rates and SFR known for high outflow rates down to lower values ($\log_{10}{\dot{\rm M}_{\rm out}}\,[\mathrm{M}_\odot~\mathrm{yr}^{-1}], 18 pages, 11 pages appendix, 13 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present the first part of an investigation on the planetary nebula (PN) PC 22 that focuseson the use of deep imaging and high-resolution echelle spectroscopy to perform a detailedmorpho-kinematical analysis. PC 22 is revealed to be a multipolar PN emitting predominantlyin [O III] and displaying multiple non-symmetric outflows. Its central region is found to be alsoparticularly inhomogeneous with a series of low-ionization structures (knots) located on thepath of the outflows. The morpho-kinematical model obtained with SHAPE indicates that (i) thede-projected velocities of the outflows are rather large, ≥100 km s, while the central regionhas expansion velocities in the range ∼25 to ∼45 km s following the 'Wilson effect'; (ii) themajority of the measured structures share similar inclination, ≃100°, i.e. they are coplanar;(iii) and all outflows and lobes are coeval (within the uncertainties). All these results make usto suggest that PC 22 is an evolved starfish PN.We propose that the mechanism responsible forthe morphology of PC 22 consists of a wind-shell interaction, where the fast post-asymptoticgiant branch (AGB) wind flows through a filamentary AGB shell with some large voids.© 2017 The Authors., LS acknowledges support from PAPIIT grant IA-101316 (Mexico). The fastest molecular component to the protostellar outflows -- extremely high-velocity (EHV) molecular jets -- are still puzzling since they are seen only rarely. The first aim is to analyze the interaction between the EHV jet and the slow outflow by comparing their outflow force content. The second aim is to analyze the chemical composition of the different outflow velocity components and to reveal the spatial location of molecules. ALMA 3 mm and 1.3 mm observations of five outflow sources at 130 -- 260 au resolution in the Serpens Main cloud are presented. Observations of CO, SiO, H$_2$CO and HCN reveal the kinematic and chemical structure of those flows. Three velocity components are distinguished: the slow and the fast wing, and the EHV jet. Out of five sources, three have the EHV component. Comparison of outflow forces reveals that only the EHV jet in the youngest source Ser-emb 8 (N) has enough momentum to power the slow outflow. The SiO abundance is generally enhanced with velocity, while HCN is present in the slow and the fast wing, but disappears in the EHV jet. For Ser-emb 8 (N), HCN and SiO show a bow-shock shaped structure surrounding one of the EHV peaks suggesting sideways ejection creating secondary shocks upon interaction with the surroundings. Also, the SiO abundance in the EHV gas decreases with distance from this protostar, whereas that in the fast wing increases. H$_2$CO is mostly associated with low-velocity gas but also appears surprisingly in one of the bullets in the Ser-emb~8~(N) EHV jet. The high detection rate suggests that the presence of the EHV jet may be more common than previously expected. The origin and temporal evolution of the abundances of SiO, HCN and H$_2$CO through high-temperature chemistry are discussed. With the aim of characterizing the dynamical processes involved in the formation of young protostars, we present high-angular-resolution ALMA dust polarization observations of the Class 0 protostellar cores Serpens SMM1, Emb 8(N), and Emb 8. With spatial resolutions ranging from 150 to 40 au at 870 μm, we find unexpectedly high values of the polarization fraction along the outflow cavity walls in Serpens Emb 8(N). We use 3 mm and 1 mm molecular tracers to investigate outflow and dense-gas properties and their correlation with the polarization. These observations allow us to investigate the physical processes involved in the radiative alignment torques (RATs) acting on dust grains along the outflow cavity walls, which experience irradiation from accretion processes and outflow shocks. The inner core of SMM1-a presents a polarization pattern with a poloidal magnetic field at the bases of the two lobes of the bipolar outflow. To the south of SMM1-a we see two polarized filaments, one of which seems to trace the redshifted outflow cavity wall. The other may be an accretion streamer of material infalling onto the central protostar. We propose that the polarized emission we see at millimeter wavelengths along the irradiated cavity walls can be reconciled with the expectations of RAT theory if the aligned grains present at μm size of dust grains in the interstellar medium. Our observations allow us to constrain the magnetic field morphologies of star-forming sources within the central cores, along the outflow cavity walls, and in possible accretion streamers.

Aims. We aim to determine the geometry, density gradient, and velocity structure of jets in post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) binaries. Methods. Our high cadence time series of high-resolution optical spectra of jet-creating post-AGB binary systems provide us with a unique tomography of the jet. We determine the spatio-kinematic structure of the jets based on these data by fitting the synthetic spectral line profiles created by our model to the observed, orbital phase-resolved, H{\alpha}-line profiles of these systems. The fitting routine is provided with an initial spectrum and is allowed to test three configurations, derived from three specific jet launching models: a stellar jet launched by the star, an X-wind, and a disk wind configuration. We apply a Markov-chain Monte Carlo routine in order to fit our model to the observations. Our fitting code is tested on the post-AGB binary IRAS19135+3937. Results. We find that a model using the stellar jet configuration gives a marginally better fit to our observations. The jet has a wide half-opening angle of about 76 degrees and reaches velocities up to 870 km/s. Conclusions. Our methodology is successful in determining some parameters for jets in post-AGB binaries. The model for IRAS19135+3937 includes a transparent, low density inner region (for a half-opening angle < 40 degrees). The source feeding the accretion disk around the companion is most likely the circumbinary disk. Open Access funding provided by Max Planck Society., The [C II]lambda 158 mu m line is one of the strongest far-infrared (FIR) lines and an important coolant in the interstellar medium of galaxies that is accessible out to high redshifts. The excitation of [C II] is complex and can best be studied in detail at low redshifts. Here we report the discovery of the highest global [C II] excess with respect to the FIR luminosity in the nearby AGN host galaxy HE 1353-1917. This galaxy is exceptional among a sample of five targets because the AGN ionization cone and radio jet directly intercept the cold galactic disk. As a consequence, a massive multiphase gas outflow on kiloparsec scales is embedded in an extended narrow-line region. Because HE 1353-1917 is distinguished by these special properties from our four bright AGN, we propose that a global [C II] excess in AGN host galaxies could be a direct signature of a multiphase AGN-driven outflow with a high mass-loading factor.© I. Using data from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey, we present a census of AGN-driven ionized outflows in a sample of 159 AGNs at $1.4 \le z \le 3.8$. The sample spans AGN bolometric luminosities of $10^{44-47} \mathrm{~erg~s}^{-1}$ and includes both quiescent and star-forming galaxies extending across three orders of magnitude in stellar mass. We identify and characterize outflows from the \hbeta, [OIII], \halpha ~and [NII] emission line spectra. We detect outflows in $17\%$ of the AGNs, seven times more often than in a mass-matched sample of inactive galaxies in MOSDEF. The outflows are fast and galaxy-wide, with velocities of $\sim 400-3500 ~\mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$ and spatial extents of $0.3-11.0$ kpc. The incidence of outflows among AGNs is independent of the stellar mass of the host galaxy, with outflows detected in both star-forming and quiescent galaxies. This suggests that outflows exist across different phases in galaxy evolution. We investigate relations between outflow kinematic, spatial, and energetic properties and both AGN and host galaxy properties. Our results show that AGN-driven outflows are widespread in galaxies along the star-forming main sequence. The mass-loading factors of the outflows are typically $0.1-1$ and increase with AGN luminosity, capable of exceeding unity at $L_\mathrm{AGN} \gtrsim 10^{46.3} \mathrm{~erg~s}^{-1}$. In these more luminous sources the ionized outflow alone is likely sufficient to regulate star formation, and when combined with outflowing neutral and molecular gas may be able to quench star formation in their host galaxies., 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in the The Astrophysical Journal

Understanding the nuclear growth and feedback processes in galaxies requires investigating their often obscured central regions. One way to do this is to use (sub)millimeter line emission from vibrationally excited HCN (HCN-vib). It has been suggested that the most intense HCN-vib emission from a galaxy is connected to a phase of nuclear growth that occurs before the nuclear feedback processes have been fully developed. We aim to investigate if there is a connection between the presence of strong HCN-vib emission and the development of feedback in (U)LIRGs. We collected literature and archival data to compare the luminosities of rotational lines of HCN-vib, normalized to the total infrared luminosity, to the median velocities of 119 {\mu}m OH absorption lines, potentially indicating outflows, in a total of 17 (U)LIRGs. The most HCN-vib luminous systems all lack signatures of significant molecular outflows in the far-infrared OH absorption lines. However, at least some of the systems with bright HCN-vib emission do have fast and collimated outflows that can be seen in spectral lines at longer wavelengths. We conclude that the galaxy nuclei with the highest L(HCN-vib)/L(IR) do not drive wide-angle outflows detectable using the median velocities of far-infrared OH absorption lines. It is possible that this is due to an orientation effect where sources which are oriented in such a way that their outflows are not along our line of sight also radiate a smaller proportion of their infrared luminosity in our direction. It could also be that massive wide-angle outflows destroy the deeply embedded regions responsible for bright HCN-vib emission, so that the two phenomena cannot coexist. The discovery of the Fermi bubbles---a huge bilobular structure seen in GeV gamma-rays above and below the Galactic center---implies the presence of a large reservoir of high energy particles at $\sim 10 \, \text{kpc}$ from the disk. The absence of evidence for a strong shock coinciding with the edge of the bubbles, and constraints from multi-wavelength observations point towards stochastic acceleration by turbulence as a likely mechanism of acceleration. We have investigated the time-dependent acceleration of electrons in a large-scale outflow from the Galactic centre. For the first time, we present a detailed numerical solution of the particle kinetic equation that includes the acceleration, transport and relevant energy loss processes. We also take into account the addition of shock acceleration of electrons at the bubble's blast wave. Fitting to the observed spectrum and surface brightness distribution of the bubbles allows determining the transport coefficients, thereby shedding light on the origin of the Fermi bubbles., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures; submitted to A&A
