In this paper, the subgenus Merocratus Belý, 1989 of the genus Anthaxia Eschscholtz, 1829 from China is reported, which includes three species: Anthaxia (Merocratus) insulaecola, Obenberger from Taiwan, A. (M.) tamdaoensis Bílý, 1998 from Yunnan and A. (M.) zhengyucheni Qi & Song, sp. n. from Hainan. The new species is described and illustrated. The illustrations and information of A. (M.) tamdaoensis from Yunnan are updated. Maclurodendron oligophlebium (Rutaceae) is reported as a new host plant of Merocratus adults in family level. Red maples (Acer rubrum L.; Sapindales: Sapindaceae) are common shade trees well known for their stunning autumn foliage and fast growth. They are a popular choice for landscapes, parks, and public places across the United States. Flatheaded borer species in the genus Chrysobothris (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) are some of the most damaging insects in red maple production, with attacks being most common on stressed and newly transplanted trees. In nurseries, red maples routinely experience flatheaded borer attacks, while the Freeman maple hybrid 'Autumn Blaze' has been reported as potentially resistant to flatheaded borers. In this study, traits of three borer susceptible red maple cultivars ('Brandywine', 'Sun Valley', and 'October Glory') were compared against a potentially resistant Freeman maple hybrid cultivar for baseline differences as well as differences under the stress of a foliar herbicide application Scythe (pelargonic acid 57%). Morphological, physiological, and biochemical traits of the red maple cultivars were evaluated and contrasted with the hybrid to identify traits related with borer resistance. Under normal conditions, the hybrid maple exhibited faster growth, greater concentrations of sulfur, and lower concentrations of zinc and flavonoids in leaf tissues compared to red maples. The herbicide stress treatment resulted in greater nitrogen and sulfur concentrations in hybrid foliage, but less chlorophyll, flavonoid, and zinc concentrations compared to the red maple cultivars. Field trials validated borer preference for red maples over the hybrid. Chrysochroinae Laporte de Castelnau, 1835 is the very colourful subfamily of Buprestidae. There are 127 species and subspecies of the subfamily which have been recorded in China.In this paper, we reported three genera, two subgenera and five species of the subfamily Chrysochroinae Laporte de Castelnau, 1835 (Coleoptera, Buprestidae) which are all newly recorded from China. These reported taxa belong to two tribes and four genera: Chrysochroa (Chroodema) corbetti (Kerremans, 1893), Chrysochroa (Pyranthe) fulgens ephippigera White, 1843, Demochroa (Demoxantha) gratiosa indica Csiki, 1900, Xanthocata bonvouloirii (Deyrolle, 1861) (all the above four being Chrysochroini) and Cardiaspis mouhotii E. Saunders, 1866 (Dicercini). The five newly-recorded species are briefly described, illustrated and supplemented with relevant biological information.

We present a genome assembly from an individual female Agrilus biguttatus (jewel beetle; Arthropoda; Insecta; Coleoptera; Buprestidae). The genome sequence spans 368.10 megabases. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 11 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X sex chromosome. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled and is 17.41 kilobases in length.

Simple Summary: Two jewel beetle species native to Europe, the cypress jewel beetle, Lamprodila (Palmar, Ovalisia) festiva L. (Buprestidae, Coleoptera), and the sinuate pear tree borer, Agrilus sinuatus Olivier (Buprestidae, Coleoptera), are key pests of ornamental thuja and junipers and of orchard and ornamental rosaceous trees, respectively. Although chemical control measures are available, due to the beetles' small size, agility, and cryptic lifestyle at the larval stage, efficient tools for their detection and monitoring are missing. Consequently, by the time emerging jewel beetle adults are noticed, the trees are typically significantly damaged. Thus, the aim of this study was to initiate the development of monitoring traps. Transparent, light green, and purple sticky sheets and multifunnel traps were compared in field experiments in Hungary. Light green and transparent sticky traps caught more L. festiva and A. sinuatus jewel beetles than non-sticky multifunnel traps, regardless of the larger size of the colored surface of the funnel traps. Although light green sticky sheets turned out to be optimal for both species, using transparent sheets can reduce catches of non-target insects. The key to the effectiveness of sticky traps may lie in the behavioral responses of the beetles to the optical features of the traps. In this paper, the subgenus Thailandia Bílý, 1990 of the genus Anthaxia Eschscholtz, 1829 from China is reported, including two species: A. (T.) svatoplukbilyi Qi & Song, sp. nov. from Guangxi and A. (T.) rondoni Baudon, 1962 from Yunnan. The description and illustrations of the new species are provided, the illustrations and information of A. Strigoptera bimaculata (L., 1758) is a tropical Buprestid (jewel beetles) found throughout Southeast Asia to Northern Australia. Adult S. bimaculata was observed in The American College in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. Chrysobothris daveverityi sp. nov. from Guerrero, Morelos, Michoacán, Oaxaca, and Puebla in southwestern Mexico is described and illustrated. The species has been confused with C. acutipennis Chevrolat, 1835 and C. merkelii Horn, 1886, from both of which it can be distinguished by color, surface sculpture, and male genitalia. The new species is diagnosed, figures of dorsal habitus and male genitalia for the three species are provided, and comments are made regarding their relationship and distribution, including three new state records and one new adult host plant record. Structural coloration frequently originates from the interaction of light with multilayers of thin films in living organisms. One example where structural colors are created by multilayers is the jewel beetle, Chrysochroa fulgidissima, which has highly iridescent green elytra with longitudinal red stripes. We examine the structure, chemical information, and physical properties of the epicuticle of the jewel beetle by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nanoindentation, and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS). AFM and SEM were used to analyze the surface structures of the green elytra and red stripes of the jewel beetle's wing. SEM and TEM images obtained from the cross‐sectioned cuticle samples of green and red areas indicated that the color arises from interference reflectors and reflectors consist of successive repeating layers of different electronic densities. Nanoindentation results showed that the green area of the elytron possesses a higher hardness and reduced modulus compared with the red area. To analyze the surface of the elytra and to compare multilayers of the green area with those of the red area, mass spectra and depth profiles were acquired by ToF‐SIMS with C60 and Ar cluster ion beams. The epicuticle consists of several layers with alternating high and low abundances of inorganic and organic fragment ions, with approximately 16 layers in the green and 12 layers in the red area. Therefore, ToF‐SIMS combined with other analytical techniques indicate that multilayer reflection is a major mechanism of the jewel beetle's iridescence causing structural coloration. The Cypress jewel beetle, Lamprodila (Palmar) festiva festiva (Linnaeus, 1767), is a serious invasive pest of ornamental Cupressaceae, which has recently expanded its range from the Mediterranean region northwards to central and eastern Europe, and to the Russian Black Sea coast. In this study, we conducted a scanning electron microscopy study of the micromorphology of the male and female antennae of L. festiva to examine the morphology, numbers, distribution, and possible functions of antennal sensilla. Most sensilla are located in the sensory fields within the apical depressions on antennomeres IV–XI. We identified four main types of antennal sensilla in L. festiva: sensilla chaetica (seven subtypes, of which two occur only in females), sensilla basiconica (five subtypes), multiporous grooved pegs (two subtypes), and Böhm sensilla. Females have relatively more sensilla chaetica and multiporous grooved pegs, whereas males have more sensilla basiconica. We discuss possible functions of all examined sensilla and compare them with those in other Buprestidae or other insects. Our study should serve as background information for advanced electrophysiological and behavioral experiments to better understand the functions of different sensilla and mechanisms related to semiochemically based pest control strategies.

The phylogenetic analysis was carried out to find out the validity of Chrysochroa coreana as a new species. The insect specimens were collected at Kaohsiung, Taiwan and Shizuoka, Japan. Partial region (532 bp) of COI was amplified and sequenced. The sequences were aligned and then analyzed. Based on the Kimura-2-parameter method, we calculated genetic distances among them. It indicated that the Korean individual of C. fulgidissima was closely related to Taiwan one with relatively low genetic distance (0.083). On the other hand, the Japanese individual was remotely related with those of Korean (0.192) and Taiwan (0.183) individuals. To clarify if the populations of C. fulgidissima from Korea, Taiwan, and Japan are different at the level(s) of subspecies, species, or genus, it is necessary that more samples of the members of the family Buprestidae should be collected and genetically analyzed.

This study was conducted to elucidate the life cycle and the ecological characteristics of Trachys yanoi Y. Kurosawa, an important pest of Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino. Life cycle, mortality rates in developmental stages, annual population dynamics, and early leaf abscission were investigated. Adults emerged from under the bark of Zelkova trees in April and fed on Zelkova leaves. Females laid 49 eggs on average, mainly in May and early June. Eggs hatched after 17 days, and the larvae fed inside the leaves. They developed through three instars. In July, leaves with the final stage of larvae were abscised. Four days after abscission, the larvae pupated. New adults eclosed from pupae seven days after pupation, and the adults emerged from abscised leaves after an additional two days. In total, 1650 adults emerged per 1 m2 of forest floor, resulting in a major population increase. The newly emerged adults fed on the remaining Zelkova leaves, compounding the damage. In October, adults overwintered under the tree bark. Mortality rates in the egg, larval, and pupal stages were 41%, 58%, and 31%, respectively. The mortality rate among overwintering individuals was 43%. Because only Zelkova leaves that were abscised in July contained the larvae, and because only a small number of beetles emerged from non-abscised, mined leaves, the removal of abscised leaves at nine-day intervals over period of early leaf abscission is a simple and effective way to control the beetle. Coraebus florentinus (Herbst) is one of the most important wood borer pests of oaks in forest ecosystems in the Mediterranean Region. It is considered to be a heliophilous species as it prefers the sunniest parts of the canopy of isolated trees. The biological significance of this preference is still unknown. Recently, the effect of temperature on the preimaginal development of this insect was established: high temperatures increase its probability of survival and shorten its developmental time. Continuing this line of research, this study was designed to determine whether C. florentinus exhibits selective oviposition behaviour and how variation in temperature due to differences in the position of the branches in which the larvae develop could affect the subsequent development of this species. To determine whether this insect selects the branches in which to lay its eggs, location data (north, south, upper half and lower half of the tops of the trees) for 112 damaged branches were analysed. The results confirm that females of C. florentinus do not lay their eggs at random at the tops of trees but rather choose branches that are exposed to the sun. To determine the effects of larval rearing temperature on the later development stages, an experiment consisting of five treatments was performed. Four of these treatments, each containing 25 infested branches derived from different orientations and positions in a tree (upper half of tree and north facing, upper half and south facing, lower half and north facing and lower half and south facing) were kept in culture chambers maintained at optimal conditions for pupal development (28 ± 2°C and 60-65% relative humidity). The fifth treatment with 25 branches infested collected from the most sun-exposed locations were kept in outdoor conditions. The results indicate that variation in temperature during larval development due to differences in branch location does not significantly affect survival, duration of developmental of pupae, emergence success or sex ratio of the adults.

Environmental degradation caused by climate change greatly affects the forest ecosystems of the Mediterranean region, in particular the sclerophyllous Quercus forests typical of central and southern Spain. An important pest that damages oak trees in this area is Coraebus florentinus (Herbst), a heliophilous and thermophilous insect whose survival could be favoured by the temperature increase associated with climate change. The main objective of this paper was to determine the effect of temperature on the duration and percentage survival of the preimaginal stage of C. florentinus and provide data for determining more precisely when to control for this pest by applying silvicultural techniques. The experiment included six treatments, with 25 branches infested with C. florentinus in each of the treatments, which were kept at different temperatures over the range 15-28°C. The results clearly support the hypothesis that higher temperatures affect the post-larval development of C. florentinus by increasing the percentage survival and shortening the developmental time. In fact, partial correlations confirm that the highest percentages of emergence and survival were recorded when the developmental times were shortest, which occurred at the highest temperatures used. Despite the clear influence of temperature on the development of the preimaginal stage of C. florentinus, additional trials are required to accurately determine future trends in C. florentinus populations. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop monitoring programs in zones affected by C. florentinus and to apply scheduled management techniques that ensure the control of this species.

The complete mitogenome of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB, Agrilus planipennis) was obtained by gleaning mitochondrial sequences from whole-genome Illumina sequencing data. The circular genome has 15,942 base pairs and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) and an A–T-rich region. All PCGs begin with ATN codons. The nucleotide composition is highly asymmetric (31.65% A, 40.25% T, 17.39% G, 10.71% C), with an overall A–T content of 71.9%. Phylogenetic analysis based on insect mitogenomes indicated that EAB is closely related to other Buprestoidea species, clustering most closely with Chrysochroa fulgidissima.

Ovalisia festiva (Linnaeus, 1767), previously considered a very rare and localised (accidental) species in Eastern Europe (Hungary, Romania), is recorded as a real pest for Cupressaceae in the Romanian Plain − the Easternmost site, out of the species' previously known range. In comparison with the annual life cycle of the species in the Mediterranean region, in Romania the adults emerged between the second and the eighth year after the trees were planted, causing an attack of over 50% per cultivar. The Chrysobothris femorata (Olivier) species group has expanded to 12 recognized species. Many of these species are sympatric, share larval host plants, and are difficult to reliably separate morphologically. This study investigated species limits and relationships among the recognized species occurring within the southeastern United States. Results are presented from phylogenetic analyses including several group members using sequences from cytochrome oxidase I (cox I) and arginine kinase (AK). Cox I analyses validated the monophyly of several Chrysobothris species outside of the C. femorata species group and recovered group members C. adelpha Harold, C. viridiceps Melsheimer, and C. ivintu Wellso and Manley as monophvletic. However, cox I analyses yielded well supported nodes that rendered C. femorata Olivier, C. quadriimpressa Gory and Laporte, C. rugosiceps Melsheimer, and C. shawnee Wellso and Manley paraphyletic. AK sequences provided statistical support for monophyly of C. wintu and two well supported clades that rendered C. femorata and C. quadriimpressa paraphyletic. Imperfect taxonomy cannot totally account for this phenomenon. The observed pattern could be the result of ancestral polymorphism or lineage sorting, yet introgression of these C. femorata species group members is possible. Although observed results from these genes suggest potential taxonomic synonymization, such steps are premature. Greater understanding of interactions between group members as occurs within their overlapping geographies and host plants is needed. We suggest future molecular studies adopting a population genetics approach utilizing several nuclear genes or SNiPs acquired subsequent to a NextGen sequencing campaign. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current status of Korean jewel beetle, Chrysochroa coreana is reported from the data collected in the five-year field survey (2008-2012). Despite the previous assumption of its endangered status, the beetle was recently found in the southwestern part of Korea frequently. However the local population was suffering from the inadequate management of its host plants, Celtis sinensis Persson. In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome of the jewel beetle, Chrysochroa fulgidissima (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), from four overlapping fragments. The 15,592 bp C. fulgidissima mitogenome exhibits a gene arrangement and content identical to the most common type in insects. The start codon of the C. fulgidissima COI gene is unusual, in that no typical ATN codon is available. The 875 bp A+T-rich region is the shortest among the coleopteran mitogenomes that have thus far been sequenced in their entirety. The most unusual feature of the genome is the presence of three tRNA-like sequences within the A+T-rich region: two tRNALeu(UUR)-like sequences and one tRNAAsn-like sequence. These sequence stretches have the proper anticodon sequence and the potential to form secondary structures, but also harbor many mismatches in the stems. Phylogenetic analysis using a concatenation of 13 amino acid sequences of protein-coding genes among the available sequenced species of coleopteran superfamilies (Buprestoidea and Elateroidea belonging to the infraorder Elateriformia, and Chrysomeloidea and Tenebrioroidea belonging to the infraorder Cucujiformia) by Bayesian inference, maximum-likelihood analysis, and maximum-parsimony analysis revealed a lack of strong support for monophyletic Elateriformia. Structures of biological surfaces pressed on to a pure liquid gallium surface were successfully traced on to the gallium surface by quick-freezing below the melting point (28.78°C) in air or water for replication in scanning electron microscopy. Gallium's high surface tension (−700 mN m−1 at 30°C) deteriorates the spatial resolution of replicas and destroys some types of specimens. Five different biological surfaces were replicated on to gallium surfaces to evaluate spatial resolution and specimen resistance, i.e. reproducibility and applicability. Gallium replication of jewel beetle wing and human hair demonstrated submicron spatial resolution in the horizontal direction at least. Trials of protozoa, bacteria, and culture cell replication showed that protozoa are suited to replication because the cell membrane has characteristic structures with sufficient resistance to the gallium surface. Jewel beetles are colorful insects, which use vision to recognize their conspecifics and can be lured with colored traps. We investigated the retina and coloration of one member of this family, the flathead oak borer Coraebus undatus using microscopy, spectrometry, polarimetry, electroretinography and intracellular recordings of photoreceptor cell responses. The compound eyes are built of a highly unusual mosaic of mirror-symmetric or chiral ommatidia that are randomly rotated along the body axes. Each ommatidium has eight photoreceptors, two of them having rhabdomeres in tiers. The eyes contain six spectral classes of photoreceptors, peaking in the UV, blue, green and red. Most photoreceptors have moderate polarization sensitivity with randomly distributed angular maxima. The beetles have the necessary retinal substrate for complex color vision, required to recognize conspecifics and suitable for a targeted design of color traps. However, the jewel beetle array of freely rotated ommatidia is very different from the ordered mosaic in insects that have object-directed polarization vision.
