2. Intermediality and interculturality in Jose Juan Tablada's poetry : East Asian culture and the 'visual turn'

This thesis investigates two key themes in the Mexican writer José Juan Tablada's (1871 - 1945) poetry: intermediality between poetic text and visual art, and interculturality between cultures of East Asia and Mexico. As previous studies have noticed that many of Tablada's poems on visual art are also related to East Asian culture, the study finds this point worthy of further discussion and investigates the potential correlation between interculturality and intermediality in Tablada's poetry. This thesis explores the chronological evolution in Tablada's poetry collections El florilegio (1899, 1904), Al sol y bajo la luna (1918), Un día (1919), Li-Po y otros poemas (1920), and El jarro de flores (1922) as regards their poetic texts, typographical arrangements, and illustrations. In the early stage, Tablada's poetry related to East Asian topics shows strong orientalist influence from French translations. Starting from Al sol y bajo la luna, Tablada's poems of East Asian themes intertwine with East Asian visual art including prints and seals. In Un día, Li-Po y otros poemas, and El jarro de flores, Tablada's poems use visual presentation such as illustrations and non-linear typographical arrangements to convey extra-textual meaning. Chapter One and Two apply Liliane Louvel's theory of 'pictoriality' and scheme of polarities in ekphrasis to study the intermedial transposition between painting and poetry in Tablada's pictorial writing. Chapter Three and Four adopt approaches and conclusions of cognitive research into the reader's perception of non-linear poetic texts to discuss the verbal visuality in Tablada's visual poetry. The thesis concludes that, through French and English translations, East Asian culture influenced Tablada's intermedial writing and inspired his 'visual turn' in poetic composition. The poetry-painting hybrid form such as ehon, the visual-verbal signifying writing system known as ideograms, as well as the painter-poet tradition in East Asian culture inspired Tablada to pursue 'graphical-lyrical simultaneity' in poetry and prompted his experiment of visual writing. Through the investigation into Tablada's poetry, this thesis finds that interculturality might lead to the intermedial writing. This thesis contributes to the study of visual poetry with underlying influence from East Asian culture.

En el presente artículo se analizan los diarios que realizaron tres escritores hispanohablantes, José Juan Tablada, Enrique Gómez Carrillo y Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, tras sus respectivos viajes por Japón a principios del s. XX. El estudio de estos textos tiene como objetivo revelar cómo la forma en que se construye la imagen de Japón no solo es exotizante, sino que, interpretada siguiendo una crítica decolonial, reproduce y legitima el modelo hegemónico occidental de representación de la alteridad como subalternidad. Defiendo que este modelo está fundamentado en la problematización de la relación de la comunidad descrita con el proyecto de la modernidad.

En el libro de haikus titulado Jarro de flores, del poeta mexicano José Juan Tablada (1871-1945), los animales son instancias de percepción hacia la reconstrucción de la voz poética en un peregrinaje interior. Comienza con la búsqueda de una voz primitiva representada en el sapo y el perro. El próximo destino será el jardín japonés con animales diminutos evanescentes a la percepción. El siguiente será un paisaje hispanoamericano de animales grandes ya sometidos a la mirada. Posteriormente el poeta asume el control de su voz poética en un paisaje oceánico, con animales marítimos elaborados mediante la intertextualidad. El punto de llegada es una integración de estas diversas instancias de percepción.

Amidst the violence of the Mexican Revolution, the poet José Juan Tablada published Mexico's first modern artist's book and art book: Hiroshigué: El pintor de la nieve, de la lluvia, de la luna y de la noche (1914). In design and content, Tablada's art book was a cultural artifact unlike any other. By drawing on concepts from cultural and literary theory, and art history, I demonstrate how this art book addressed the nation's cultural crisis and proposed a program for interpreting and reinventing it. This paper presents evidence on the controversial trip of José Juan Tablada to Japan in 1900. Most scholarship studying the book of chronicles En el país del sol (1919) refers to the lack of evidence of José Juan Tablada's trip to Yokohama. Until now there was no concrete evidence to prove his travel, beyond the book mentioned and some watercolors. As a result of a search at the National Archives in San Francisco among the documents that record the arrival of travelers, I found that passenger twenty-one was, indeed, Tablada, who traveled back from Yokohama on December 5, 1900 to arrive in San Francisco on December 22 aboard the ship “America Maru". This was a crucial trip for Tablada, which marked a watershed moment in his artistic creation and reaffirmed his intellectual passion for the land of the sun. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes Mexican intellectual José Juan Tablada’s profile as a translator based on translations he did at the beginning of his career. The themes addressed in his translations are explored, such as the decadence due to Baudelaire’s influence, as well as themes derived from several other French-language authors. Of particular note is the Eastern theme in his translations, which would go on to become central to his writings and gain him recognition as a noted expert on Japanese culture. Neste artigo analisa-se o perfil tradutório do intelectual mexicano José Juan Tablada a partir das traduções que o autor realizou no início de sua carreira. Salientam-se os temas abordados em suas traduções como, por exemplo, o decadentismo que surge a partir da influência de Baudelaire. Somam-se a essa temática outras de diversos autores de língua francesa. Destaca-se principalmente a temática oriental que está presente em suas traduções e que posteriormente será central em seus escritos autorais. Como resultado, Tablada será reconhecido como um notável especialista da cultura japonesa.

En el presente artículo tratamos de discernir de qué forma influyó su producción ensayística en los poemas dedicados a esos escritores; es decir, indagar en las relaciones internas que creemos se establecen entre sus ensayos y poemas y descifrar de qué forma los primeros han influido en los segundos. Asimismo, y mediante el análisis pormenorizado de las composiciones, trataremos de visualizar las relaciones textuales que José Emilio Pacheco construía entre el escritor homenajeado y otros escritores. En definitiva, tratamos de evidenciar que su labor ensayística ha sido fundamental para la elaboración de unos poemas en los que revive y deja para la posterioridad su visión poética de sus poetas modernistas mexicanos. Como reza en el título, este escrito trata sobre la influencia de Oriente en la poesía de José Juan Tablada. Para abordarlo con mayor profundidad y riqueza, se hace un recorrido previo por la filosofía y la poética orientales, el haikú japonés y sus principales representantes. Finalmente, con estos elementos recogidos, se analizan los haikú escritos por el artista mexicano, compilados en dos obras. La primera, que data de 1919, y fue publicada bajo el título Un día, y la segunda, El jarro de flores, de 1922. Se miran semejanzas y diferencias con oriente, pero también características particulares, relevantes para la poesía latinoamericana. Al final, una conclusión que pretende sintetizar el aporte del artista a la poesía del subcontinente.

La manía del bibliófilo suele convertirse en un laberinto de ese tipo de encuentros fortuitos que los ingleses del siglo XVIII llamaron “serendipity”. En este ensayo, gracias a mis incursiones bibliofílicas en el ámbito de la literatura aurisecular, salió a flote un precedente muy probable del haikú hispánico (aceptada la relatividad de su parentesco con el haikú japonés) en otras formas casi ideográficas de la poesía que se cultivó siglos muy anteriores al modernismo. En este caso se trata de pequeñas estrofas que acompañaban sendos grabados, cuyos motivos emblemáticos obligaban a una expresión sintética y profundamente visual, casi gestual. En un estudio paralelo, cotejo los Jeroglíficos de Alonso de Ledesma con algunos hai-kai de José Juan Tablada, separados por una distancia de tres siglos, pero identificados en su búsqueda poética.

The present article focuses on the visual poetry o f the Mexican poet José Juan Tablada who is one of the most important precursors of the avant-garde in the twentieth century. As numerous critics have remarked, José Juan Tablada made several major contributions to modern poetry in Mexico. Although Tablada is generally credited with having introduced Latin American poets to the Japanese haiku, he was also responsible for encouraging them to experiment with visual poetry. As a result of a visit to Japan in 1900, José Juan Tablada became interested in haiku tradition and in Japanese ideograms which inspirited him to create his own poetry in the style of oriental work but adopted to the Latin American perspective of his imagination and to the rules of the Spanish language. It appears that Tablada's attention was focused mainly on the experiments of the modern French Imagist poets and was influenced by Apollinaire's Calligrammes, a problem that we partially intend to explain in the present article spotlighting some occurrences, but finally we conclude that both poets must have been inspired by the previous form of visual poetry, known to the ancient Greeks as technopaigneia and to the Romans as carmina figurata, or by the pre-Hispanic ideographic forms; in this subject we consider a long list of possible inspirations. The principal idea o f this paper is to analyse the visual poetry of Tablada from the perspective of its interdisciplinary character, where images and words situate his poems in a spatial configuration. Therefore we have concentrated our attention on two books of poems published in Caracas, the first one entitled Un día... Poemas sintéticos edited in 1919, and the second one, Li-Po y otros poemas, published in 1920, as an example of the so called visual poetry or ideographic poems, a denomination more appropriate for the second collection. To sum up, Tablada was an innovator, though he did borrow ideas like most writers do. His haikus are original, accompanied with his self-made drawings, and have a distinct Mexican flavor containing local references to flora, fauna o Mexican culture — characteristics that we underline in this paper while also providing a general overview of some theoretical aspects related to Literature and Art.
