International audience; Although created in Armenia at the same time as the iconic monumental khachkars, the type of small wall-inserted khachkars can be considered characteristic of the Armenian Diaspora, because its use there is almost exclusive. This essay is the first attempt, certainly still very incomplete, to study this group of artefacts as a whole. As can be seen in the examples, first from Cilicia, then from several Diaspora communities, these small, usually thin plates, often in marble, are no longer erected isolated, oriented to the East, but are fixed on wall surfaces, and therefore do not have their own orientation. Their “decoration” presents mainly the same type of cross – tree of life, as on the traditional tall khachkars of Armenia, but is simplified. In addition to the fundamental purpose of glorifying the cross, the functions of these small slabs, often expressed by inscriptions, are diverse, “votive”, commemorative, funerary, or simply bearers of the protection offered by the cross. The inscriptions engraved on most of them contain a prayer for the memory and salvation of pilgrims (and their family members) – in the case of the plates from Jerusalem, and for the memory and salvation of ordinary believers and clergymen in other cases. Reasons for choosing these modest forms in Diaspora conditions may include a reduction in financial resources, a loss of technical and artistic skills, the absence of the volcanic stone of Armenia, and a desire for discretion, especially in Catholic or Islamic environment, where visible manifestations of foreign worship could be unwelcome.; Bien que créé en Arménie en même temps que les emblématiques khatchkars monumentaux, le type de petits khatchkars muraux peut être considéré comme caractéristique de la diaspora arménienne, parce que son utilisation y est presque exclusive. Le présent essai est la première tentative, encore certainement très incomplète, d’étudier ce groupe d’objets dans son ensemble. Comme on peut le voir dans les exemples, d’abord de Cilicie, puis de plusieurs communautés diasporiques, ces petites plaques généralement minces, souvent en marbre, ne sont plus dressées isolément, orientées vers l’Est, mais sont fixées sur des surfaces murales, et n’ont donc pas d’orientation propre. Leur « décoration » présente principalement le même type de croix – arbre de vie que sur les khatchkars traditionnels d’Arménie, mais est simplifiée. Outre le but fondamental de glorifier la croix, les fonctions de ces petites dalles, souvent exprimées par les inscriptions, sont diverses, « votives », commémoratives, funéraires ou simplement porteuses de la protection offerte par la croix. Les inscriptions gravées sur la plupart d’entre elles contiennent une prière pour la mémoire et le salut des pèlerins (et des membres de leur famille) – dans le cas des plaques de Jérusalem, et pour la mémoire et le salut de croyants ordinaires et d’ecclésiastiques dans les autres cas. Parmi les raisons expliquant le choix de ces formes modestes dans des conditions diasporiques, on peut penser à une réduction des ressources financières, à une perte de compétences techniques et artistiques, à l’absence de la pierre volcanique d’Arménie, et à une volonté de discrétion, en particulier en milieu catholique ou islamique, où des manifestations visibles de culte étranger pouvaient être mal perçues.

International audience; The article presents some observations on the architecture and sculpted decoration of St. John the Baptist of Urc/Urtz, a monastery of early 14th century in Ararat region, on the occasion of the publication in 2017 of a book devoted to it by R. Abgaryan and E. T'umanyan. In particular, the article examines the links between this ensemble and the contemporary monuments (Mongol period) of the neighbouring Vayots Dzor region, as well as its specificities. The alarming state of conservation of the monastic complex, the main part of which has slid towards the valley, requires urgent stabilization work. The remains of a very large khatchkar discovered by R.A and E.T. near the village of Geghashen in the Kotayk’ region are briefly presented. When it was whole, in its frame, this remarkable but very damaged work was more than six and a half meters high. It can be attributed to the monastery’s sculptor, Sargis vardapet.; L’article présente quelques observations sur l’architecture et le décor sculpté du monastère St-Jean-Baptiste d’Urc/Urtz (début du XIVe s., région d’Ararat), à l’occasion de la publication en 2017 d’un ouvrage à son sujet par R. Abgaryan et E. T’umanyan. L’article examine notamment les liens qui unissent cet ensemble aux monuments contemporains (période mongole) de la région voisine, le Vayots Dzor, ainsi que ses spécificités. L’état alarmant de l’ensemble monastique, dont la partie principale a glissé vers la vallée, exige des travaux urgents de stabilisation du terrain. Les vestiges d’un très grand khatchkar découvert par R.A et E.T. près du village de Geghashen dans la région de Kotayk’, sont brièvement présentés. Lorsqu’elle était entière, dans son cadre, cette œuvre remarquable mais très endommagée, mesurait plus de six mètres et demi de hauteur. Elle peut être attribuée au sculpteur du monastère, le vardapet Sargis.

The purpose of the research. The study analyses some aspects of the development of sacral symbolism of khachkars. It describes the historical traditions, which have influenced the development of the symbolic field of khachkars and defines the basic types of symbols and historical transformations of their interpretation. It allows to conclude, that the formation of a sacral field of khachkars was a result of synthesis of Armenian pre-Christian and Christian traditions. The methodology of research includes methods of comparative analysis and synthesis, historicity and contextuality and also a method of iconological analysis. Scientific novelty of research consists in the accurate formulation of the thesis about binding and accumulating function of khachkars, who were the major link of preservation and transfer of sacred Tradition and its substantiation. Conclusions. Khachkars are thoughtful evident demonstration of fundamental laws of a Universe and sacral embodiment of the idea of immortality through passage through The Nether (death) and rebirth to "the life eternal". Their main task was to direct through symbols to the supernatural, to the Higher Being, because the nature of symbols influences people who do not have an idea about their true sacral meaning. The natural assumption is that this complicated high art of creation of khachkars was purposefully developed and transferred by the masters, who knew the Tradition and who wished to keep and transfer it to the following generations, which that most likely happened in the professional (craft) unions., У статті проаналізовано певні аспекти формування та розвитку сакральної символіки хачкарів. Висвітлено історичні традиції, що вплинули на становлення символічного поля хачкарів, охарактеризовано основні типи символів та історичні трансформації їхнього тлумачення, аналіз яких призводить до висновку про формування сакрального поля хачкарів внаслідок синтезу вірменських дохристиянських та християнських традицій. Методологія дослідження включає використання методів компаративного аналізу та синтезу, історичності та контекстуальності, а також методу іконологічного аналізу. Наукова новизна дослідження полягає в чіткому формулюванні та обґрунтуванні тези щодо з’єднуючої та акумулюючої функції хачкарів, які були надзвичайно важливою ланкою збереження та передачі священної Традиції. Висновки. Хачкари є ретельно продуманою наочною маніфестацією основних законів світобудови, сакральним втіленням ідеї безсмертя через проходження нижнього світу (смерть) і другого народження в «життя вічне». Головним їх завданням було скеровувати до надприродного, Вищого, використовуючи для цього символи, оскільки природа символів зумовлює їх вплив навіть на тих людей, які не мають жодного уявлення щодо іхнього правдивого сакрального змісту. Закономірне припущення, що складне високе мистецтво створення хачкарів цілеспрямовано формувалося і передавалося майстрами, які знали Традицію та прагнули зберегти і передати її нащадкам, що, вірогідніше за все, відбувалося в професійних (ремісничих) союзах., В статье проанализированы некоторые аспекты формирования и развития сакральной символики хачкаров. Освещены исторические традиции, повлиявшие на становление символического поля хачкаров, охарактеризованы основные типы символов и исторические трансформации их толкования, что позволяет сделать вывод о формировании сакрального поля хачкаров в результате синтеза армянских дохристанских и христианских традиций. Методология исследования включает использование методов компаративного анализа и синтеза, историчности и контекстуальности, а также метода иконологического анализа. Научная новизна исследования заключается в четкой формулировке и обосновании тезиса о связующей и аккумулирующей функции хачкаров, являющихся важнейшим звеном в сохранении и передаче священной Традиции. Выводы. Хачкары являются тщательно продуманной наглядной манифестацией основных законов Мироздания, сакральным воплощением идеи бессмертия через прохождение нижнего мира (смерть) и второго рождения в «жизнь вечную». Их главной задачей являлось через символы направлять к сверхъестественному, Высшему, поскольку их природа такова, что они воздействуют на людей, даже не имеющих представления об их истинном сакральном содержании. Закономерно предположение, что сложнейшее высокое искусство создания хачкаров целенаправленно формировалось и передавалось мастерами, знающими Традицию, стремившимися сохранить и передать ее следующим поколениям, что, вероятнее всего, происходило в профессиональных (ремесленных) союзах.

International audience; Tens of Medieval cross stones, with very modest decoration, and generally deprived of inscriptions, are present in the Genoese fortress of Sugdeia / Soldaia / Sudak (Crimea). Their study and the presence of fragmentary inscriptions make it possible to identify these cross stones with Armenian khachkars.

International audience; Simultaneously with the category of monumental khachkars, Armenia has elaborated, since the beginning of the history of this art - the second half of the 9th century, a “minor” type of small, mural khachkars. This type became particularly characteristic for diaspora communities. Among them, one of the most active centers where such small plates with a cross – tree of life were produced was Crimea, especially, in the 14th-16th c., the town of Caffa (Theodossia). Crimean mural khachkars, often made of marble, have their specific features, and exerted a marked influence on the production of other Armenian communities of the region, notably in Galicia, Podolia, and Bessarabia.

The article analyzes the character of historical links of the Armenian colonies in Ukraine with the Holy Land. Documentary sources about the Ukrainian Armenians' contacts with Palestine appeared only in the XI century. This information could be thematically divided into records about the Crusaders in the context of the history of the Armenian colonies in Ukraine and information about the members of the Armenian Diaspora of Ukraine who had taken pilgrimage to Jerusalem, that can be obtained in records about certain members of the Armenian diaspora, in books of travelers and various epigraphic material., Статья освещает характер исторических связей армянских колоний в Украине со Святой Землей. Тематически все сведения о контактах армян Украины с Палестиной можно разделить на 2 категории: сведения о крестоносцах в контексте истории армянских колоний Украины; сведения о паломничестве представителей армянской диаспоры Украины в Иерусалим, которые можно получить из биографических данных о представителях армянской диаспоры, из книг путешественников, а также из эпиграфического материала, Стаття висвітлює характер історичних зв’язків вірменських колоній в Україні зі Святою Землею.
