In recent years, there have been increased attention from HCI research towards action sports. Results of these studies are mainly artifacts with a focused view on performance and technology. It is argued that an approach focusing on the unique interaction possibilities between users' physicality, users' cognitive processes and environment is still missing in the field. Whilst some previous work outlined these unique interaction possibilities, such as mental and emotional load from various action sports and how these translate to users' learning processes, dedicated works for understanding user needs and addressing them are lacking. During my PhD, I'm focus on bouldering, a branch of rock climbing. Using a RtD approach, I'll be looking into learning processes of novices. User insights and I aim to address cases of bodily learning in action sports, which is very important in terms of understanding the users and having long-term impact on their practices., NA

This paper considers the influence of the French school of phenomenology represented by Maurice Merleau-Ponty on Akradii Dragomoshchenko’s poetics. Dragomoshchenko (1946—2012) was a St Petersburg writer, an important figure of the Russian literature of the last quarter of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Dragomoshchenko’s interest in the latest European and American thought played an important role in his creative activity both as a source of quotations and allusions in his prose and poetic works written between the 1980s and 2000s and an impulse for a structural transformation of his own creative manner. Phenomenology of Perception by Maurice Merleau-Ponty was a philosophical text which played an important precedent role in the process. Its translation into English became available to the poet starting with the 1980s. A specific variant of the phenomenology of the body worked out by the French philosopher forms a conceptual apparatus in the 1990s, using which Dragomoshchenko reflects his own creative method with the help of fiction. Most comprehensively, the process is represented in Dragomoshchenko’s last major work, Chinese Sun (1997), a novel which can be considered a vivid example of interference of philosophical and poetic language. The understanding of sensory perception and its role in human subjectivity substantiated by Merleau-Ponty in Phenomenology of Perception is used to analyse how visual and kinesthetic experience influences the writer. The novel employs different stylistic means which make it possible to emphasise the phenomenological nature of the author’s approach. Also, the writer uses numerous lyrical insertions, retardations and retrospections, functionally marked use of certain grammatical forms (primarily, verbs of imperfective aspect and present tense), etc. The author of the article analyses such means to demonstrate the role played by the phenomenological perspective in Dragomoshchenko’s creative work and the evolution of his poetics between the 1980s and 2000s., В статье рассматривается влияние французской феноменологической школы в лице Мориса Мерло-Понти на поэтику Аркадия Драгомощенко (1946—2012) — петербургского писателя, занимавшего видное место в русской литературе последней четверти ХХ — начала ХХI в. Дан анализ понятия «перцептивная модальность». Охарактеризованы типы личностей по признаку ведущей модальности: визуалы, которые воспринимают большую часть информации с помощью зрения; аудиалы, получающие информацию через слуховой канал, доминирующим для них является звук; кинестетики, воспринимающие основную часть информации через осязание и другие ощущения. Выделены особенности представления учебной информации для обучающихся разных психотипов при проведении занятий по обобщению и систематизации знаний в курсе «Школьный химический эксперимент». Приведены результаты тестирования с целью определения типа перцептивной модальности, на основе которых сформированы три группы обучающихся. Разработаны и проведены занятия по темам: «Первоначальные химические понятия. Водород», «Кислород», «Азот и его соединения. Фосфор». Эти занятия отличаются формами представления учебной информации и организацией их проведения. Продиагностированы знания обучающихся с целью определения качества усвоения учебного материала по изученным темам. Установлено отношение обучающихся к использованию разных форм представления информации на занятиях по результатам рефлексии.

Contact Improvisation (CI) has grown into perhaps the most influential form of contemporary dance improvisation, yet is relatively seldom reflected upon in academic discourse. This article argues for a closer understanding of embodied and environmental aspects of consciousness and lived experience in the study of CI. Broaching the challenge of capturing such corporeal insight in the form of written analysis, this article is an attempt to reflect upon CI’s potential contributions to humanities thought on embodied cognition. Embodied cognition theories assert that embodiment constitutes a fundamental and inseparable part of human cognitive and perceptual capacities, and thereby of human consciousness. CI calls to experience the body as “an intelligent practitioner rather than instrument” (Novack 1990, 185), with no full separation between “physical” and “mental,” nor between sensation, perception, and thought. CI may thus offer a highly potent territory for manifesting and further examining the radical inseparability between minds and bodies. First, this article provides an extended introduction of CI, discussing the difficulties of defining the form, the interconnectedness of its practice and discourse, and the challenges these pose for “objective” or “unbiased” academic analysis – which CI does not allow for. Next, the author turns to the link between CI and the writings of two central philosophical thinkers on embodied cognition: Alve Noë and Brian Massumi. This article proceeds to examine, through the link to CI, key tensions between Noë’s and Massumi’s framing of the inter-relationship between the somatic experience of movement and vision, perception and navigation. Understandings of this inter-relationship relate to the question of whether highly attuned embodied experience can potentially escape the limits of phenomenology. The author concludes by laying out arguments for both answers to this question, fusing Noë’s and Massumi’s positions to the tensions between conceptualizations of CI as “physics” and “chemistry.”

This study is concerned with performance parameters while pushing and pulling a trolley to evaluate the characteristics of human-robot collaborations. To rescind the linkage between estimated weight and exerted force the trolley is laden with three different weights and three different object sizes. The participants had to maneuver the trolley on a given path, similar to a real production scenario in automotive assembly lines. Twenty-two subjects participated (13 men, 9 women) and were recorded by a VICON motion tracking system. The applied forces were measured independently on each handle in three coordinates via a Kistler hand force measuring system. The subjective impressions were acquired through surveys. The acquired results in this study are divided in maximum thrust force and applied force in the first 150ms, 300ms, and 1000ms. The first refers to different handle angles. The last relate to the mentioned size-weight illusion.

The study aims at identifying the influence of kinesthetics, attitude and motivation on the learning results of Sports Education. The nature of the study is path analysis. Within the study, the exogenous variables are kinesthetics (X1), attitude (X2) and motivation (X3) while the endogenous variable is the learning results of Sports Education. Then, the samples that have been selected for the conduct of the study are 40 male students from Grade XI of Bantaeng Vocational High School. The data that have been gathered are analysed by means of inferential statistical analysis namely the regression test. The results of the study show that Kinesthetics, Attitude and Motivation have influence on Learning Results of Sports Education. Furthermore, the results of the study also show that Kinesthetics and Attitude by means of Motivation also have influence on Learning Results of Sports Education. However, within the conduct of the study the researcher only involves a few samples. Therefore, the results of the study might be developed further in the future studies with more methods and samples.

Hintergrund: Die stetig steigende Prävalenz von Übergewicht und Adipositas mit daraus resultierenden Folge- und Begleiterkrankungen stellt nicht nur für die Betroffenen ein individuelles Problem dar, sondern entwickelt sich zu einer gesamtgesellschaftlichen Herausforderung. Daher müssen Lösungsstrategien gefunden werden, um der durch die WHO anerkannten chronischen Erkrankung entgegenzuwirken. Nachdem konservative Verfahren für eine dauerhafte Gewichtsreduktion oftmals versagen, bleibt den Betroffenen meist als letzter Ausweg ein bariatrisch-chirurgischer Eingriff zur Erreichung dieses Zieles. Aus pflegerischer Sicht erfordert der Umgang mit fettleibigen Patientinnen und Patienten im Krankenhausalltag sowohl eine besondere fachliche Expertise, als auch praktische Fertigkeiten. Im Hinblick auf eine postoperative Frühmobilisation übergewichtiger und adipöser Patientinnen und Patienten, stellt die Aufklärung und Vorbereitung die wichtigste Maßnahme dar. Den Pflegenden soll mit der Präanästhesie-Pflegevisite ein Instrument zur Verfügung gestellt werden, um diesem Umstand Genüge zu tragen. Sie beinhaltet Informationen zum Ablauf rund um die Operation sowie zum Umgang mit Schmerzen und eine Bewegungsschulung zu einzelnen Bewegungssequenzen für das postoperative Aufstehen aus dem Bett nach dem Konzept von MH Kinaesthetics®. Die Inhalte der Präanästhesie-Pflegevisite wurden evidenz-basiert erarbeitet und den Bedürfnissen bariatrischer Patientinnen und Patienten angepasst. Methodik: Anhand eines nach wissenschaftlichen Methoden entwickelten Fragebogens und der Numerischen Ratingskala wurde die Wirksamkeit dieser pflegegeleiteten Visite, durch Intervention und Kontrolle an jeweils 30 Patientinnen und Patienten überprüft. Die Untersuchung stützt sich dabei auf das persönliche Empfinden der Befragten. Ergebnisse: Die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer der Interventionsgruppe fühlten sich über die Abläufe rund um ihre ihre Operation sehr gut bis gut informiert und durch eine präöperative kinaestehtische Bewegungschulung auf das erste Aufstehen aus dem Bett sehr gut bis gut vorbereitet. Ihr Befinden schätzten sie bei den einzelnen Bewegungssequenzen dementsprechend ein. Vergleichsweise haben die Probandinnen und Probanden der Kontrollgruppe in diesen Items schlechter abgeschnitten. Auf die bewegungsabhängigen Schmerzen und die Aufenthaltsdauer im Krankenhaus konnte keine signifikante Auswirkung nachgewiesen werden, wobei sich auch hier ein Trend zugunsten der Interventionsgruppe beobachten lässt. Schlussfolgerungen: Durch die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse dieser Studie kann die Präanästhesie-Pflegevisite als nützliches Werkzeug zur patientenorientierten Aufklärung betrachtet werden. Backround: The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity with extensive accompaning diseases is not only an individual problem for those affected, but is turning into considerable societal challenge. Therefore, solutions must be found to counteract this WHO acknowledged chronic disease. Because conservative procedures often fail in achieving permanent weight reduction goals, patients are often only left with the option of a bariatric surgical procedure. From a nursing point of view, dealing with obese patients in hospital requires both professional expertise and practical skills. Regarding the post-operative mobilisation of overweight and obese patients, education and preparation are key measures. The pre-anesthesia nursing visite is a instrument provided for nursing staff to meet these measures. This instrument contains information to the course of the operation as well as to the handling of pain. A pre-operative movement training according to MH Kinaesthetics® helps individual movements for the post-operative getting up from of bed. The contents of the pre-anaethesia care visite is evidence based and has been adjusted to the needs of bariatric patients. Methods: Using a scientifically developed questionaire and a numerical rating scale, the efficacy of the care guided visits were examined by means of intervention and control in 30 patients. The study is based on the individual perception of the participants. Results: The participants of the intervention group felt very well to well informed about the operation procedures and through a pre-operative kinaestetics movement training, also very well to well prepared for the first post-operative getting up from bed. They assessed their condition for the individual movement sequesnces accordingly. In comparison the participants in the control group did worse on these items. No significant effect on movement related pain or length of stay in hospital could be proven, although a trend in favor of the intervention group could be considered. Conclusion: Through the gained knowledge of this study a pre-anaethesia care visite can be considerd a useful patient oriented preperation and information tool. Background The subjective haptic vertical (SHV) task requires subjects to adjust the roll orientation of an object, mostly in the roll plane, in such a way that it is parallel to perceived direction of gravity. Previously we found a tendency for clockwise rod rotations to deviate counter-clockwise and vice versa, indicating hysteresis. However, the contributing factors remained unclear. To clarify this we characterized the SHV in terms of handedness, hand used, direction of hand rotation, type of grasping (wrap vs. precision grip) and gender, and compared findings with perceived straight-ahead (PSA). Healthy subjects repetitively performed adjustments along SHV (n = 21) and PSA (n = 10) in complete darkness. Results For both SHV and PSA significant effects of the hand used and the direction of rod/plate rotation were found. The latter effect was similar for SHV and PSA, leading to significantly larger counter-clockwise shifts (relative to true earth-vertical and objective straight-ahead) for clockwise rotations compared to counter-clockwise rotations irrespective of the handedness and the type of grip. The effect of hand used, however, was opposite in the two tasks: while the SHV showed a counter-clockwise bias when the right hand was used and no bias for the left hand, in the PSA a counter-clockwise bias was obtained for the left hand without a bias for the right hand. No effects of grip and handedness (studied for SHV only) on accuracy were observed, however, SHV precision was significantly (p Conclusions Unimanual haptic tasks require control for the hand used and the type of grip as these factors significantly affect task performance. Furthermore, aligning objects with the SHV and PSA resulted in systematic direction-dependent deviations that could not be attributed to handedness, the hand used, or the type of grip. These deviations are consistent with hysteresis and are likely not related to gravitational pull, as they were observed in both planes tested, i.e. parallel and perpendicular to gravity. Short-term adaptation that shifts attention towards previous adjustment positions may provide an explanation for such biases of spatial orientation in both the horizontal and frontal plane.

While haptics, tactile displays, and other topics relating to non-visual user interfaces have been the subject of a variety of research initiatives, little has been done specifically related to those for blind driving. Many automation technologies have been developed for the purpose of assisting and improving the safety of sighted drivers, but to enable a true driving experience without any sense of sight has been an essentially overlooked area of study. Since 2005, the Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory at Virginia Tech has assumed the task of developing non-visual interfaces for driving through the Blind Driver Challenge®, a project funded by the National Federation of the Blind. The objective here is not to develop a vehicle that will autonomously mobilize blind people, but to develop a vehicle that a blind person can actively and independently operate based on information communicated by non-visual interfaces. This thesis proposes some generalized considerations for the development of non-visual interfaces for driving, using the instructional interfaces developed for the Blind Driver Challenge® as a case study. A model is suggested for the function of blind driving as an open-loop control system, wherein the human is an input/output device. Further, a discussion is presented on the relationship between the bandwidth of information communicated to the driver, the amount of human decision-making involved in blind driving, and the cultivation of driver independence. The considerations proposed here are intended to apply generally to the process of non-visual interface development for driving, enabling efficient concept generation and evaluation. Master of Science
