WHITE shark , *SHARKS , *COASTS , *ACQUISITION of data - Abstract
Described in the present report are documented attempts to tag and sample the white shark, Carcharodon carcharias (Linnaeus, 1758), along Italian coasts in the Mediterranean Sea, which took place near the Lampedusa Island in the lower Tyrrhenian Channel of Sicily, off the coast of Rimini in the Adriatic Sea, and of Civitavecchia in the central Tyrrhenian Sea. The project, activated in 2015, was aimed at tagging and sampling specimens of the white shark in order to collect data useful to implement conservation strategies in the Mediterranean Sea. Despite four tagging attempts made in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022 with 288 total hours of baiting activity and the use of 1030 kg of chum, no white sharks or any other shark species were sighted. NORWAY spruce , *SPRUCE , *WOODEN beams , *LANDSCAPE architecture , *CLIMATE change , *PLANT selection , *MOUNTAIN forests - Abstract
This paper analyzes the morphological and dendrometric characteristics of three 97 years old European spruce trees, on Čemernik mountain, in the municipality of Crna Trava, where European spruce is not autochthonous. The examined parameters were compared with 5 test European spruce trees, aged about 50 years, which are grown in the population, within a radius of 100 m, in identical environmental conditions. The results of this study confirm the excellent vitality of hundred-year-old trees at the researched location, which can be brought into direct correlation with the current climate changes. The selected trees have confirmed the best combinatorial ability, which is why they stand out as a good base for selection and production of planting material for establishing purpose culture, afforestation, application in landscape architecture, and also for timber production. The research confirmed that the analyzed hundred-year-old spruce trees are in excellent condition and high decorative value, with a crown formed from the ground, which is why they are proposed for protection as a natural monument of botanical character. SOIL erosion , *UNIVERSAL soil loss equation , *GEOGRAPHIC information systems , *SOIL moisture - Abstract
Soil erosion is one of the most prominent geomorphological hazards threatening environmental sustainability in the coastal region of western Syria. The current war conditions in Syria has led to a lack of field data and measurements related to assessing soil erosion. Mapping the spatial distribution of potential soil erosion is a basic step in implementing soil preservation procedures mainly in the river catchments. The present paper aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of soil erosion severity using revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) and remote sensing (RS) data in geographic information system (GIS) environment across the whole Al-Qshish river basin. Quantitatively, the annual rate of soil erosion in the study basin was 81.1 t ha-1 year-1 with a spatial average reaching 55.2 t ha-1 year-1. Spatially, the soil erosion risk map was produced with classification into five susceptible-zones: very low (41 %), low (40.5%), moderate (8.9%), high (5.4%) and very high (4.2%). The current study presented a reliable assessment of soil loss rates and classification of erosionsusceptible areas within the study basin. These outputs can be relied upon to create measures for maintaining areas with high and very high soil erosion susceptibility under the current war conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

- Abstract

- Abstract
Rad donosi rezultate ispitivanja otkrivenih ostataka arhitekture i arheološki istraženjih površina tokom 2020. godine. more...

History of Art. Conservation of the Artistic Heritage ,Opuzen - Abstract
The town of Opuzen is located in the south of the Republic of Croatia, near the delta of Neretva River. This master thesis examines the city from the perspective of artistic topography, inspired by a project of the Institute of Art History, which entails an insight into the genesis of the city, specifically geographical, traffic and demographic features, as well as the historical context, in order to present the transformation of Opuzen from its creation to its current state. Discovering the urban morphology reveals its accents: monuments that stand out in the city environment and point to the historical life of the city. In the wider area there are two fortifications, Brštanik and Kula Norinska, whose existence and dominance in the landscape remind that in Opuzen there used to be a fortress called Forte Opus, of which nothing has been preserved today. Therefore, space was opened for the next accent, the main city square, which as an ensemble occupies the largest part of the area of the former fortress. In addition to the change from a military function to a settlement, the second biggest change in the landscape of the city, which in history has been labelled as a swamp, was created by the implementation of regulation and land reclamation. At the time of regulation, perhaps the most noticeable accent in the city's panorama, the Stari most, was created. An insight into the significance of these monuments leads to an understanding of the need for their protection, therefore their current state of preservation or neglect is presented as an appeal for conservation. In the context of the importance of monument protection thesis brings a comment on vandalism towards sculpture of Stjepan Filipović, which during Homeland War resulted in its loss in the surroundings of Opuzen. At the end, proposals are offered for the revival of ambient and monumental values, which are found within two documents of the Council of Europe: The Faro Convention and the Declaration of Santiago de Compostela. Also, in the Miroslav Krleža Lexicographic Institute project, called Atlas of Technical Heritage. more...

To study the complex relationships of genera and species within the family Salmonidae, most research are based on molecular methods. However, morphometric methods are an important part of research and in combination with molecular methods can provide more complete results on the taxonomy, systematics and phylogeny of salmonid species. Brown trout is certainly the most attractive among them, and previous studies has shown that it represents a very variable species, both morphologically and genetically. This is evidenced by the existence of eight phylogenetic lineages within this species: Danube (DA), Atlantic (AT), Mediterranean (ME), marmoratus (MA), Adriatic (AD), Tigris, Duero and Dades. An exceptional diversity of native geographically specific populations is found in the Balkan Peninsula. Previous studies have shown that the uncontrolled introduction of nonnative lineages in this area has threatened the status of these populations. In this research, 15 populations in the Danube basin of the central-western and eastern part of Croatia were analyzed. One of the analyzed populations was from the fish farm “Vrabac”. To determine the population structure of brown trout, as well as the degree of introgression of non-native genetic material, three molecular markers were used: the control region of mitochondrial DNA, the locus of the nuclear gene L-lactate dehydrogenase and eight microsatellite loci. Additionally, the method of geometric morphometry was used to determine variations in body shape between native and introduced lineages, and their hybrids. Two phylogenetic lineages (DA and AT) and a total of four haplotypes (Da1, Da2, Da22 and At1) were identified in the analyzed populations. Among the haplotypes, only Da1 is defined as native. The biggest threat to the indigenous stock is represented by the introduced individuals of the AT lineage, and the hybridization between AT and DA individuals that was established in all analyzed natural watercourses. The presence of non-native individuals most likely originates from imported, farmed and uniform populations of brown trout. As a possible confirmation of this conclusion are the results of geometric morphometry that showed the least variation in body shape in Atlantic brown trout individuals from the “Vrabac” fish farm and those found in natural watercourses. AT), mediteranska (ME), marmoratus (MA), jadranska (AD), Tigris, Duero i Dades. Molekularni markeri korišćeni u ovom istraživanju bili su: kontrolni region mitohodrijske DNK, lokus jedarnog gena L-laktat dehidrogenaze i osam mikrosatelitskih lokusa.

Gradnjom zvonika katedrale sv.

The All Saints church in Đakovo was built in the second half of the 16th century as the Mehmed-beg mosque. The mosque is commonly known as Ibrahim-pasha's mosque who was Mehmed's son and heir. The mosque belongs to a common type of domed mosques built by the Ottoman empire, consisting of a single domed square space with a portico consisting of four columns supporting three small domes. After over 150 years of Ottoman rule, Slavonia was liberated and the mosque survived because it was turned into a Christian church. Other remnants of the Ottoman period were mostly lost, but for a few examples, so the Đakovo mosque is the only remaining mosque in Slavonia, and one of three in the entire Croatia. The church has five distinct historical layers. After the mosque phase, there was a baroque phase, a baroque-classicism phase, a classicism phase, and a historicism phase. In 1988, detailed research was conducted on the history of construction and in 1989 conservation efforts were carried out in order to present its construction history. They were based on a combination of two approaches, preservation of the original narthex and interpolation, as well as the uncovering of the dome. After that, only smaller interventions were carried out in 2001 and 2021 to maintain the church's condition. more...

Although in the past it has mostly been classified as “miscellaneous” in relation to other written documents, photographs are nowadays increasingly considered as a primary historical source. The first part of the thesis explains some of the basic concepts associated with archives and photographs and discusses the role of photography in the archives. Various procedures for the creation of photographs throughout history (helioengraving, daguerrotipia, gelatin, dry emulsions) to date are described. Photographs as a specific archival material require special storage conditions for their proper preservation, but above all specially educated staff whose task is to secure the conditions and to know how to handle the photographs properly, which is explained towards the end of the thesis The focus of this thesis is on the fundamental requirements to be respected when archiving and preserving photographs. more...

Dvije srodne vrste pastrva, Salmo trutta Linnaeus, 1758 i Salmo labrax Pallas, 1814, nastanjuju područje Plitvičkih jezera. Two related trout species, Salmo trutta Linnaeus, 1758 and Salmo labrax Pallas, 1814, inhabit the Plitvice Lakes area. S. labrax is native to the area where its pure populations, considered rare in the rest of Europe, have been recorded. However, S. trutta is considered an alien species there and negatively affects the survival of S. labrax. The presence of the invasive Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792), eutrophication and the construction of dams and barriers also pose a threat to S. labrax. The aim of this study was to make a phylogenetic reconstruction and determine the evolutionary history, basic measures of genetic diversity, gene flow and migrations of three observed species in order to gain a better insight into their relationships. I based the analysis on cytochrome b gene and control region sequences using the methods of maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, median joining and the Bayesian analysis. The results confirm S. labrax is native, while S. trutta and O. mykiss were introduced from several different sources to the observed area. Low genetic diversity of S. labrax, especially its pure populations, as well as insignificant migration rates between them, were determined. Higher values of genetic diversity of introduced species indicate their evolutionary potential. more...

ORCHIDS , *ECOLOGICAL research - Abstract
This contribution is based on the field studies on wild orchids conducted from September 2012 to November 2013 in one-hectare plots in five Long-Term Ecological Research Sites in Mindanao Island, Philippines. The family Orchidaceae is the most threatened group of plants in the Philippines however, it remains to be poorly known and understudied. This is the first preliminary report on the species richness and distribution of wild orchids in the identified research sites. A list is contains 79 orchid species belonging to 34 genera which represents approximately 7% of the known orchid species in the Philippines. A total of 40 endemics and 3 threatened species were recorded in the sites. This list can be used as basis for future biodiversity assessment and conservation initiatives to identify and prioritize areas for immediate conservation of threatened and endemic orchid species as well as the vulnerable mountain ecosystems. Il nuovo tipo di architettura, usando il periodo dell’antichità romana come punto di partenza, offrì alla telecamera la scenografia desiderata., The article addresses the relationship the modernist process of urban development had with the monument heritage from the Antiquity between the two world wars taking as the example the city of Pula. At that time, Pula was part of the Kingdom of Italy, whose policy was primarily marked by fascism. Considering the specific ideological value that the narrative of the ancient Rome had for the fascist movement, the article intends to locate key moments when this narrative had made the connection to the concrete monuments such as the Arch of the Sergii, the Temple of Augustus and the amphitheatre (Arena) with the urban transformation of the city that was happening then. Using the methods of art historical analysis, the author describes the interventions on these monuments in the context of the wider social, political and cultural climate, as well as the theoretical frameworks that guided the interventions themselves. The article is structured in five chapters, the first three of which observe the interventions on important Roman monuments in the city, while the fourth deals with the theoretical framework that influenced the interventions themselves, primarily through the notions of Italian architect Gustavo Giovannoni. The last chapter offers a synthesis of this eclectic process of modernization of the city through a description of the urban planning of Luigi Lenzi, which summarized the previous partial implementation in the urban fabric. The article further results in more detailed explanations of the relationships that existed between different disciplines, such as architecture, archaeology, conservation and urbanism, without whose cooperation such process could not have been implemented. The main goal of the process designed in this way was to create an architectural scenography for the political parades, events and marches of the modernist mass society. The film camera, that new eye, conditioned the scenography itself on a formal level – it had to be dichromatic, give rhythm to the sequences, steer the eye of the observer. The new architecture, using antiquity as its foundation, gave the camera the desired scenography. more...

Po završetku arheoloških radova obavljena je konzervacija i restauracija svih stećaka., Detailed survey of stecak sites in wider Dubrovnik region was published in the context of creating the catalogue for the exhibition "Stecaks" held in Klovicevi Dvori in Zagreb (2008) and later in the framework of the project "HER.CUL" (2010-2013) as well as in the publication of Dubrovnik Museums: Stecaks and other late medieval gravestones in the western Dubrovnik region (2018-2019). In this way the status of at least topographic and statistic data was updated. In that context, we can find stecaks in the area of Konavle Municipality (24 sites with 588 stecaks), Municipality of Zupa Dubrovacka (4 sites with 21 stecaks) administrative area of the City of Dubrovnik from Sumet in the east to Dubravica and Ridica in the West (10 sites with 68 stecaks) and Dubrovnik coastal area (29 sites with 362 stecaks). That would be 67 sites with 1039 stecaks in total. Archaeological research as well as conservation and restoration of all stecaks at the site Novakovo Greblje in Cepikuce, Dubrovnik Littoral Municipality are also published in the framework of the mentioned project "HER.CUL". Archaeological excavations from 2013 showed that late medieval graveyard with stecaks was located at the position of the former graveyard from the 8th/9th century AD. Cluster of bones (of at least 10 individuals) was the only leftover from the former graveyard and it was located in the central part of the site. As far as the graveyard with stecaks is concerned there were 6 stecaks and 5 graves with 15 buried individuals in total. According to the results of C-14 analysis graveyard was used from the first half of the 13th century to the second half of the 15th century. Only one woman was buried in the period from 1300 to 1400 under the biggest and most beautiful stecak, gabled tombstone, decorated by the shield and sworn and illustration of a horseman. That is a very valuable information for us, because we can place the emergence of the gabled tombstone in that period. Question of possible continuation of burying under stecaks after Dubrovnik Littoral became a part of Dubrovnik Republic in 1399, is also solved. It was determined that at least two burials had been performed in the 15th century. Although Novakovo Greblje is for the time being the only systematically archaeologically researched graveyard with stecaks in Dubrovnik region, it can be assumed that burying under stecaks was continued independently of changes in the government and ruling with certain areas. In any case, those are extremely valuable remnants of the late Middle Ages cultural heritage, which complete knowledge of stecaks culture, not only in Dubrovnik but also wider region. more...

In 2019, the project of preservation and restoration of the ruined church of Our Lady of Health, located in Gornja Brela, was launched. The chamois, Rupicapra spp, is a species in the family Bovidae and one of the most common mountain ungulates, distributed in the mountain ranges of Europe and Asia Minor, where it occurs in two species according to its morphological and behavioral characteristics: the Northern chamois R. rupicapra (with subspecies cartusiana, rupicapra, tatrica, balcanica, carpatica, asiatica and caucasica) and the Southern chamois R. pyrenaica (with subspecies parva, pyrenaica and ornata). The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a family of genes that encode receptors that recognize and bind antigens to present them to T cells. They are therefore central to vertebrate adaptive immunity. The MHC region comprises some of the most variable loci in the vertebrate genome, which have been associated with various fitness traits and thus with the long-term persistence of populations. Because of their wellcharacterized function and exceptional diversity, they represent excellent markers for evolutionary ecology and conservation. Traditional methods have been commonly used for their genotyping, but the introduction of next-generation sequencing has enabled more accurate and reproducible genotyping of such polymorphic gene families. In this work, the genetic diversity of the second exon of the MHC class II DRB locus was analyzed in 110 individuals from populations covering most of the range of the genus Rupicapra using a next-generation approach (Ion Torrent S5, Thermo Fisher). MHC DRB exon 2 encodes functionally important residues of the antigen binding groove and can therefore be used as a measure of the functional diversity of DRB alleles. Twenty-five MHC DRB alleles were found, each translated into a unique amino acid sequence, indicating the functional importance of polymorphism between alleles. Fourteen novel DRB alleles were identified in this study, two of which were found only in R. r. carpatica, two in R. r. asiatica, three in R. r. balcanica, and four only in R. r. rupicapra. A gene duplication was not identified. The high ratio of the relative rates of non-synonymous to synonymous mutations and the presence of trans-species polymorphisms suggest that this locus was under strong balancing selection throughout the evolutionary history of this species. Zbog svoje dobro okarakterizirane funkcije i iznimne raznolikosti, predstavljaju izvrsne markere u evolucijskoj ekologiji i konzervaciji. Duplikacija gena nije identificirana. Visok omjer relativnih stopa nesinonimnih i sinonimnih mutacija i prisutnost trans-specijskog polimorfizama sugeriraju da je ovaj lokus bio pod snažnom balansirajućom selekcijom tijekom evolucijske povijesti divokoza. more...

Quantitatively, the annual rate of soil erosion in the study basin was 81.1 t ha−1 year−1 with a spatial average reaching 55.2 t ha−1 year−1. Spatially, the soil erosion risk map was produced with classification into five susceptible-zones: very low (41 %), low (40.5%), moderate (8.9%), high (5.4%) and very high (4.2%). The current study presented a reliable assessment of soil loss rates and classification of erosion-susceptible areas within the study basin. These outputs can be relied upon to create measures for maintaining areas with high and very high soil erosion susceptibility under the current war conditions., Erozija tla jedna je od najistaknutijih geomorfoloških opasnosti koja prijeti održivosti okoliša u obalnoj regiji zapadne Sirije.

3 14 M20 М22 The National Park Đerdap (eastern Serbia, vicinity of the Danube River) occupies a segment of the Carpathian-Balkan fold-and-thrust belt and has a significant geoheritage potential, accounting for the impressive natural (geological) and cultural legacy. In addition to the extraordinary orogenic-type landscape or nappe-stacked mountainous configura tion, the region contains evidence of ancient mining activities, uncovered within its immediate neighbourhood. The ancient mining activities date back a few thousand years ago and represent a solid ground for the idea of establishing a theme park, including the accompanying mining museum. Historic sites of this type are very attractive, whereas the global practice indicates that the abandoned ore derelict mines could not be easily transformed into a facility with new economically viable content. These have often been left to reveal their dumps, junk piles and ruined leftovers of the formerly used mining tools and equipment. A recent global trend tends to preserve the ancient mining sites, with the attempt to establish a mining museum or theme park. The foundation of the theme park has the goal to make an attractive tourist offering for this part of Serbia. Importantly, old mines are in a social–historical sense the archaeological localities documenting the pioneering min ing and archaeometallurgy attempts. Ancient mining sites offer a rich legacy of mining and metallurgical tradition, representing objects or geosites needing conservation and preservation at the social level to outline the sustainable development of a region. This goal is in line with the guidelines and the criteria for developing theme parks, proposed by UNESCO. Thus, here we emphasize the importance of natural and cultural heritage, which represents a significant input of the mining legacy further supporting the idea of establishing a theme park within the National Park Đerdap. more...

Cilj članka je objediniti dostupne informacije kako bi se dobio pregled događanja koja su se do kraja 20. stoljeća vezivala uz Malo rimsko kazalište., The Small Roman Theatre in Pula is a major cultural monument that bears witness to the city’s status during the Roman administration. It was buried and unnoticed for many years, having been exploited primarily as a source of construction materials for nearby structures. It had been forgotten by the 19th c. until the initial investigation that uncovered one of the entrances to the theatre. The uncovering of the remains of the theatre continued gradually in the 20th c.; this was, however, attended by record keeping typical of the time in which it was performed. As a result, we now have very modest surviving data on the investigation of the theatre. The same is true of the reconstruction interventions that have been performed, the scope of which in places was so significant as to have altered the appearance of the monument in relation to the condition prior to the intervention. The objective of this paper is to consolidate the available data in order to obtain an overview of the events associated with the Small Roman Theatre up to the end of the 20th c. more...

Atmospheric corrosion can be slowed down or entirely stopped by placing metal equipment under a cover made of plastic foil. The results of investigation of the diffusion of water vapor through polyamid-polyethylene foil show that the vapor diffusion increases with the increase in relative air humidity. This characteristic makes polyamid-polyethylene foil no worse than polyethylene-polypropylene foil, which has been widely used so far. more...

Highly endangered local breeds are considered important not only for the maintenance of their genetic diversity for future survival but also because they regarded as part of the cultural heritage of the local and national communities. Using pedigree data and an analysis of 18 microsatellite loci we investigated the genetic diversity of a private (commercial) indigenous Skyros horse population, reared in an insular region of North-Western of Greece. The overall average animal inbreeding value reached 24%. Concerning average inbreeding value over non founding animals, it was estimated to 0.013, while the corresponding value over inbred animals were 0.13.The mean number of alleles per locus amounted to 3.72, ranging between 1 and 7 alleles. The average observed heterozygosity was 0.57. Taking into account the inbreeding estimated index, an average heterozygote deficit (Fis) of -0.09 was noted (P<0.05). Although the population maintained reasonable levels of genetic diversity, well studied inbreeding strategies should be implemented, in order to reduce the loss of genetic variability, to avoid extinction and further genetic drift of the population. Verbascum davidoffii Murb. (Scrophulariaceae), one of the rarest plant species in Bulgarian flora, is a local endemic, protected by the National Biodiversity Act, included in the Red List of vascular plants, as well as in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria with conservation status “Critically Endangered”. Its distribution is limited due to anthropogenic pressure, specific ecological requirements and low reproductive capability. In this study, we aimed to measure the genetic diversity level in the unique single world population of Verbascum davidoffii located in Pirin National Park, Bulgaria. We found high genetic diversity in the excitant population of the species. The present study indicates that the primary objective in conservation of Verbascum davidoffii is to preserve as much as possible of its evolutionary potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] more...

The Plitvice Lakes system is an extremely important ichthyological area due to the fact that its ichthyocenosis is quite different from the ichthyocenoses of the surrounding freshwater systems. The species found in the system itself are not numerous, but their diversity represents the richness of Croatian biodiversity. Freshwater systems are often subject to various human influences, with the introduction of alien species having the greatest negative impact. Rudd was also introduced to Plitvice Lakes. The aim is to determine how the rudd population affects native species, to assess invasiveness and to study the population structure of the rudd in Prošćansko Lake. Rudd caught with nets from five localities on Prošćansko Lake were used for the research, with their standard and total length and mass measured. A statistical analysis was made from the obtained data. Such population that has an exponential reproduction rate successfully exerts competitive and predatory pressure on native species, most notably Black Sea salmon populations that are sensitive to any changes within the ecosystem which they inhabit. Also, rudd from Prošćansko Lake clearly shows a preference for a certain type of microhabitat depending on the size and age category to which they belong. more...
