Ekológia The construction of highways leads to several environmental and landscape impacts, including the fragmentation of natural habitats for many animal species. Highway projects are therefore generally accompanied by mobilisations from the inhabitants of the areas concerned and environmental associations. This work aims to model the potential impacts of a highway project in France on ecological networks and to study the reception of the results by the opponents of this project. We have adopted a three-step approach. First, a land-cover map of the study area was produced at a fine scale of 10 m resolution. Second, we developed a multi-species approach by defining fifteen species groups representative of different habitats of our study area. Third, the design of landscape graphs and the resulting calculation of connectivity metrics allowed mapping the impact of the highway on multi-species ecological connectivity. Reflexive feedback from comments on these results by the public during a mobilisation day against the highway project allows assessment of the relevance of such a modelling approach in this context.

International audience; This research aims at integrating ecological networks modelling in a participatory approach in order to assess impacts of land-use planning scenarios on landscape connectivity. This approach was applied to the metropolitan area of Bordeaux, a highly dynamic territory that has been modified by several decades of rapid urbanization. Whilst ecological network modelling is widely used in the academic spheres, the concept of ecological network itself also rose within operational stakeholders acting in land-use planning. However, exchanges between scientists and stakeholders about this concept and its modelling and decision-making applications remain rare and generally relate to discussions about results of analyzes carried out by scientists on their own. To our knowledge, no studies to date have involved stakeholders throughout the whole modelling process. In this purpose, we developed an adapted companion modelling approach bringing together scientists and stakeholders for co constructing (1) a multi-species approach based on ecoprofiles, (2) a conceptual model of the territory's social-ecological functioning and (3) five land-use planning scenarios over a 15-years horizon. In parallel, we used a landscape graphs approach for modelling ecological networks of ecoprofiles, computing local and global connectivity metrics and estimating scenarios' impacts on multi-species connectivity. The results globally showed negative impacts of dystopian scenarios or anticipated trends in planning on landscape connectivity (from-20.5% to-8.1% on average, respectively), and in a lesser extent positive impacts of utopian or trans formative scenarios (+1.5% and 4.5% on average, respectively). Scenarios' impacts also varied among ecoprofiles, with some ecoprofiles showing similar or antagonistic effects. These results served as a support of debates between stakeholders on the consequences of policy decisions and actions on connectivity, and on the possibilities of translating connectivity modelling in land-use planning and biodiversity conservation in an urban context.

International audience; Habitat restoration is one of the actions to reduce landscape fragmentation by promoting connectivity and thus biodiversity. But knowing where to implement these habitats is a major issue and planners lack guidance for answering this question, in particular when it involves multiple species and over a large area. We proposed to combine biological data, habitat suitability models and spatial graphs to improve multiscale and multispecies connectivity in Ile-de-France, a highly artificialized region of 12,000 km2. The framework consisted of i) modeling habitat suitability for eight pond-dwelling species (Alytes obstetricans, Bufo bufo, Epidalea calamita, Hyla arborea, Rana temporaria, Salamandra salamandra, Triturus cristatus, and Natrix natrix), ii) modeling the ecological network for each species, iii) prioritizing each sampling point depending on the gain in connectivity if a new pond was created there and iv) combining single-species results to identify the areas that could improve multispecies connectivity. The multivariate statistical analysis revealed that transitional forest environments appeared to be the most strategic areas for improving multispecific connectivity (at least for 5 species). Targeted addition of habitat within an ecological network can increase habitat density in deficient areas and reconnect network sub-parts. This approach is therefore promising to guide conservation actions and “no net loss” biodiversity measures, especially the final stage of offset in the mitigation hierarchy.

Des engagements nationaux, européens et internationaux ont été pris pour maintenir et restaurer la connectivité entre habitats naturels face à la perte et à la fragmentation de ces habitats. Dans le même temps, les politiques environnementales dans différents pays mettent en oeuvre la séquence Eviter-Réduire-Compenser (ERC) pour atteindre l’objectif d’absence de perte nette de biodiversité (PPN). La séquence ERC a pour principe d’évaluer l’ensemble des impacts écologiques d’un aménagement, mais les critères et indicateurs permettant de quantifier les impacts sur la connectivité paysagère ne sont pas satisfaisants. Nous proposons une démarche opérationnelle pour évaluer les impacts environnementaux d’un aménagement sur la connectivité des habitats à l’échelle du paysage. Cette démarche est basée sur la théorie des graphes et l’indice EC de « quantité d’habitat atteignable » pour les espèces, qui tient compte de la quantité d’habitat, de la configuration spatiale des taches d’habitats et des capacités de dispersion des espèces. Les trois principaux enjeux de la séquence ERC sont redéfinis au regard de cette démarche. Celle-ci est ensuite appliquée à un réseau d’habitat virtuel où plusieurs scénarios d’évitement, de réduction et de compensation des impacts sont testés et comparés. Nous discutons des atouts et des limites de cette approche pour la séquence ERC et fournissons des recommandations d’application. En conclusion, nous préconisons et justifions une meilleure intégration des trois grandes politiques de conservation de la biodiversité en France : la Loi pour la Reconquête de la biodiversité, de la nature et des paysages, le SRADDET et la Stratégie de création des aires protégées., National, European and international commitments have been made to maintain and restore the connectivity of natural habitats to face habitat loss and fragmentation. Meanwhile, environmental policies in different countries worldwide have proposed the mitigation hierarchy to reach the goal of "no net loss (NNL) of biodiversity". The mitigation hierarchy aims at assessing all the ecological impacts of a development project, but the impacts on landscape connectivity are not properly addressed. We propose an operational framework to assess the environmental impacts of a development project on landscape habitat connectivity. This framework is based on graph theory and the equivalent connectivity index EC of "amount of reachable habitat", which takes into account the total amount of habitat, the spatial configuration of habitat patches and the dispersal capacities of the species. We redefine the three main issues of the mitigation hierarchy regarding "no net loss of connectivity". Then, this framework was applied to a simple, virtual network case where several scenarios of impact avoidance, reduction and compensation were tested and compared. We discuss the benefits and limitations of this approach for the mitigation hierarchy and provide practical recommendations for implementation. In conclusion, we advocate and justify a better integration of the three main biodiversity conservation policies in France : the law for the recovery of biodiversity, nature and landscapes, the SRADDET and the strategy for the establishment of protected areas.

International audience; Ecological networks are tools for conservation planning that rely on the concept of connectivity. Criticisms leveled at them are that they are widely used in a dogmatic way regardless of how they compare against other tools and that their efficiency is rarely assessed. I propose to include landscape graphs in the debate because they are designed to be operational models of ecological networks. I outline the key features of landscape graphs that can be matched with some of these criticisms: weighting of patches and links to take the landscape matrix into account, integrated metrics dealing with both connectivity and amount of habitat, and the possibility of including them in a decision-support system based on scenario analyses. I conclude that criticisms of ecological networks reveal the lack of diffusion of modeling tools such as landscape graphs, and that approaches such as participatory modeling bringing together scientists and practitioners could be one way to improve matters.

International audience; Land-cover changes (LCCs) could impact wildlife populations through gains or losses of natural habitats and changes in the landscape mosaic. To assess such impacts, we need to focus on landscape connectivity from a diachronic perspective.We propose a method for assessing the impact of LCCs on landscape connectivity through a multi-species approach based on graph theory. To do this, we combine two approaches devised to spatialize the variation of multi-species connectivity and to quantify the importance of types of LCCs for single-species connectivity by highlighting the possible contradictory effects.We begin with a list of landscape species and create virtual species with similar ecological requirements. We model the ecological network of these virtual species at two dates and compute the variation of a local and global connectivity metric to assess the impacts of the LCCs on their dispersal capacities.The spatial variation of multi-species connectivity showed that local impacts range from −6.4% to +3.2%. The assessment of the impacts of types of LCCs showed a variation in global connectivity ranging from −45.1% for open-area reptiles to +170.2% for natural open-area birds with low-dispersion capacities.This generic approach can be reproduced in a large variety of spatial contexts by adapting the selection of the initial species. The proposed method could inform and guide conservation actions and landscape management strategies so as to enhance or maintain connectivity for species at a landscape scale.

Landscape is both a backdrop to the lives of human populations and a medium for the life cycle of animal species. Landscape changes induced by land-use and land-cover dynamics affect both these dimensions, the one aesthetic, and the other ecological. Because these rationales areusually studied within different disciplines, little research has been done into how the two clashor combine as and when landscape structures change. This work seeks therefore to model the spatial co-evolution of the aesthetic and ecological functions of landscape retrospectively usingspatial metrics based on land-cover data. It focuses on changes in the urban fringes of two French cities (Paris and Besançon) over the last 30 years. The approach attempts first to use land-cover data to model (1) the landscape preferences of a set of individuals and (2) the ecological connectivity of a set of animal species. Drawing on both multivariate statistical analysis and spatial analysis, the core of this work consists in investigating how the two functions have evolved in convergent or divergent ways over time. The results provide fresh insight into the relationship between landscape aesthetics and landscape ecology and raise questions about the value of spatial modelling for a landscape management approach that endeavours to reconcile the preservation of residents’ living environments and the conservationof biodiversity., Le paysage constitue à la fois un cadre de vie pour les populations humaines et un support du cycle de vie des espèces animales. Les modifications du paysage induites par les dynamiques d’occupation du sol se répercutent sur ces deux dimensions, l’une esthétique et l’autre écologique. Ces logiques étant généralement étudiées dans des champs disciplinaires différents, peu de recherches ont porté sur la manière dont elles s’articulent selon les modifications des structures paysagères.Ce travail cherche donc à modéliser de manière rétrospective la coévolution spatiale des fonctions esthétique et écologique du paysage à partir de métriques spatiales basées sur des données d’occupation du sol. Il se focalise sur les changements intervenus dans les franges urbaines de deux agglomérations françaises (Besançon et Paris) durant les 30 dernières années.La démarche adoptée a d’abord visé à modéliser, à partir des données d’occupation du sol, (1)les préférences paysagères d’un ensemble d’individus et (2) la connectivité écologique pour un ensemble d’espèces animales. En mobilisant de manière complémentaire des analyses statistiques multivariées et des analyses spatiales, le cœur du travail a ensuite consisté à étudier comment ces deux fonctions ont évolué de manière convergente ou divergente au cours du temps. Les résultats donnent de nouveaux éléments de compréhension des relations entre esthétique et écologie du paysage et amènent à s’interroger sur l’intérêt de la modélisation spatiale pour une gestion du paysage conciliant la préservation du cadre de vie des habitants et la conservation de la biodiversité.

In urban areas, competition between land development and ecological conservation is intense. To assist decision making, a better knowledge of those areas of interest is required. Regarding inadequacy data and methods needed for ecological network mapping in urban areas, the aim of our study is to develop a method for semi-automatic vegetation extraction with Very High Spatial Resolution Pleiades imagery (VHSR). Initially applied to training samples, the process is then be deployed to four French study areas (Toulouse, Muret, Pierrefite-Nestalas and Strasbourg). The reproducibility of this method over large urbanized areas is ensured by its simplicity and the results of a pixel-based classification (kappa coefficient higher than 85 %). This extraction workflow uses free or open-source software. This vegetation data is then used in order to model potential ecological connectivity in Toulouse’s urban and peri-urban areas. Impacts on biodiversity due to urban planning are assessed using graph theory. The “Boulevard Urbain Nord de Toulouse” project, a road infrastructure, is studied. Graph metrics have been calculated to assess the level of connectivity at habitat patches and landscape scales. We classified the importance of the patches which is cross-tabulated with planning documents (PLU, a local town planning) in order to locate conflict urban areas: between biodiversity preservation and urbanization. Depending on the issues set out by local actors and through the application filter, this thesis proposes a robust analytical tool and decision-making aid for landscape management and land planning.; En milieu urbain, la concurrence entre les enjeux de préservation de la biodiversité et de la densification du territoire est particulièrement développée. The global increase of urbanization during the past decades have induced a progressive artificialization of natural environments. The building of transport infrastructures and new housings causes a landscape fragmentation in an irreversible way and a strong decrease of the connectivity of ecological habitats. Maintaining the functionality of ecological networks is becoming a major goal of sustainable urban planning policies. With a special focus on urban evolutions in the horizon 2030 in the urban area of Besançon in eastern France (residential development and road traffic evolutions), this thesis aims to assess the potential impact of urban forms on landscape connectivity of animal species’ ecological networks. This research work promotes a modelling approach both on the field of theoretical and quantitative geography and landscape ecology.This approach follows three main steps: (1) simulating residential development and its associated road traffic changes using five prospective scenarios of differentiated urban forms; (2) modelling landscape graphs of various animal species using land-cover maps and ecological data; (3) assessing the potential impacts of each scenario on ecological networks from these graphs using connectivity metrics, with measures of the connectivity decrease attributable to each residential development scenario. Contrary to sprawled cities, the results show that compact and dense urban forms best promote the maintenance of ecological connectivity for the majority of species groups. Further analysis highlights the great contribution of road traffic evolutions regarding the ecological impacts of each scenario.According to some sensitivity analysis, the model used is quite robust. It demonstrates the interest of modelling in the decision-making process for environmental conservation and urban planning to think out the city of tomorrow in a sustainable way.; L’accélération du processus d’urbanisation, constatée à l’échelle mondiale depuis les dernières décennies, conduit à une artificialisation progressive des milieux naturels. La construction d’infrastructures de transport ou de nouveaux bâtiments fragmente les paysages de manière irréversible et cause une réduction des habitats écologiques et de leur connectivité. Le maintien de la fonctionnalité des réseaux écologiques, s’intègre désormais dans les politiques d’aménagement du territoire ou d’urbanisme soucieuses de la préservation de la biodiversité.En se focalisant plus particulièrement sur les évolutions urbaines à l’horizon 2030 dans l’Aire Urbaine de Besançon (développement résidentiel et variations de trafic routier), cette thèse cherche à évaluer l’impact potentiel des formes d’urbanisation sur la connectivité des réseaux écologiques des espèces animales. Ce travail de recherche privilégie l’approche par la modélisation en s’inscrivant à la fois dans le champ de la géographie théorique et quantitative et de l’écologie du paysage.L’application de cette démarche se fait en trois étapes : (1) simuler le développement résidentiel et ses évolutions de trafic associées à l’horizon 2030, à l’aide de cinq scénarios prospectifs présentant des formes urbaines différenciées ; (2) modéliser les réseaux écologiques de plusieurs espèces animales avec des graphes paysagers construits à partir de cartes d’occupation du sol et de données écologiques ; et (3) évaluer les impacts potentiels de chaque scénario sur les réseaux écologiques à partir de ces graphes à l’aide de métriques de connectivité, par mesure de la perte de connectivité imputable à chaque scénario de développement résidentiel.Les résultats obtenus montrent que les formes de villes denses et compactes, contrairement aux villes étalées, sont celles qui favorisent le mieux le maintien des connectivités écologiques pour la plupart des groupes d’espèces analysés. Des analyses plus approfondies mettent en avant la contribution importante des variations de trafic aux impacts écologiques de chaque scénario.D’après les analyses de sensibilité effectuées, le modèle utilisé est robuste, ce qui montre l’intérêt de la modélisation dans le processus d’aide à la décision pour la protection environnementale et la planification urbaine afin de penser la ville de demain de manière durable.

International audience; Habitat restoration is one way of reducing landscape fragmentation, which is seen as a threat to biodiversity. It consists in renovating disused or degraded habitat patches or in creating new habitat patches in suitable areas. Currently, most restoration measures draw on the local knowledge of experts for selecting the best locations. For amphibian metapopulations like the European tree frog (Hyla arborea), the search for such locations must include regional-scale connectivity in order to maintain their viability. We set up a systematic and cumulative protocol for adding new habitat patches to a pond network. Graph modelling is used to include regional-scale connectivity as a criterion to be maximized. Successive locations are tested systematically and connectivity is compared before and after the virtual addition of each new pond. The location that increases connectivity most is identified. The results show that the priority areas identified by the model are similar to those suggested by local experts from a wildlife conservation association. The two approaches are complementary because they are applied on two different scales. The patch addition method can identify strategic areas for improving global connectivity by taking into account the regional scale. Experts' knowledge can target the precise location within the identified area for creating new habitats based on local factors of the surrounding context. In addition, our method can be also used to prioritize locations already decided on by landscape managers. Consequently, this protocol appears to be a useful tool for guiding habitat restoration in the field.

The development of linear infrastructures leads to the fragmentation and the artificialisation of the landscape across scales. Landscape fragmentation is a spatial process that is accompanied by a progressive decrease of the connectivity between the elements needed to conduct ecological processes. Thus, maintaining a good level of connectivity between natural habitats, compatible with human activities, has become a major issue for the preservation of biodiversity.By mobilizing methods from graph theory and landscape ecology, the thesis seeks to demonstrate the value of landscape graphs to model ecological networks and analyze impacts of transportation infrastructures at regional scale.The modeling approach, demonstrated the influence of roe deer ecological network in locating its collision hotspots related to traffic flow of the DIR est road network in Franche-Comté. Work has also allowed us to propose a methodological framework for (1) locating the potential impact of the eastern branch of the HSR Rhin-Rhône on a species distribution, and (2) estimate the distance of disturbance of this infrastructure. Finally, two approaches are proposed to quantify and prioritize improvements to prevent or mitigate these impacts. The results show the relevance of the ecological networks in the environmental impact assessment of transportation infrastructures., Le développement d’infrastructures linéaires de transport conduit, à toutes les échelles, à une artificialisation du territoire et au morcellement du milieu naturel. La fragmentation du paysage est un processus spatial qui s’accompagne d’une diminution progressive de la connectivité entre les différents éléments nécessaires au bon déroulement des processus écologiques. Ainsi, le maintien d’un bon niveau de connectivité entre les habitats naturels, s’il est compatible avec les activités humaines, est devenu un enjeu majeur pour la préservation de la biodiversité. En mobilisant des méthodes empruntées à la théorie des graphes et à l’écologie du paysage, la thèse cherche à démontrer l’intérêt de la modélisation des réseaux écologiques par les graphes paysagers, dans l’analyse des impacts des infrastructures à l’échelle régionale.Cette démarche, fondée sur la modélisation, a permis de démontrer l’influence du réseau écologique du chevreuil dans la localisation des collisions entre les individus de cette espèce et les véhicules empruntant le réseau de la DIR est en Franche-Comté. Le travail a également permis de proposer un cadre méthodologique pour localiser l’impact potentiel de la branche est de la LGV Rhin-Rhône sur la distribution d’une espèce, et estimer la distance de perturbation de cette infrastructure. Enfin, deux démarches sont proposées pour évaluer quantitativement et hiérarchiser des aménagements afin d’éviter ou d’atténuer ces impacts. Les résultats montrent la pertinence de l’intégration des réseaux écologiques dans les études d’impacts des infrastructures de transport.

International audience; The aim of the present work is to assess the potential long-distance effect of a high-speed railway line on the distribution of the European tree frog (Hyla arborea) in eastern France by combining graph-based analysis and species distribution models. This combination is a way to integrate patch-level connectivity metrics on different scales into a predictive model. The approach used is put in place before the construction of the infrastructure and allows areas potentially affected by isolation to be mapped. Through a diachronic analysis, comparing species distribution before and after the construction of the infrastructure, we identify changes in the probability of species presence and we determine the maximum distance of impact. The results show that the potential impact decreases with distance from the high-speed railway line and the largest disturbances occur within the first 500 m. Between 500 m and 3500 m, the infrastructure generates a moderate decrease in the probability of presence with maximum values close to -40%. Beyond 3500 m the average disturbance is less than -10%. The spatial extent of the impact is greater than the dispersal distance of the tree frog, confirming the assumption of the long-distance effect of the infrastructure. This predictive modelling approach appears to be a useful tool for environmental impact assessment and strategic environmental assessment. The results of the species distribution assessment may provide guidance for field surveys and support for conservation decisions by identifying the areas most affected

The Harary index is not only useful in characterizing molecular graphs but also has found applications in measuring landscape connectivity. We report properties of the Harary index, especially lower and upper bounds for the Harary index of landscape (disconnected) graphs.

The global increase of urbanization during the past decades have induced a progressive artificialization of natural environments. The building of transport infrastructures and new housings causes a landscape fragmentation in an irreversible way and a strong decrease of the connectivity of ecological habitats. Maintaining the functionality of ecological networks is becoming a major goal of sustainable urban planning policies. With a special focus on urban evolutions in the horizon 2030 in the urban area of Besançon in eastern France (residential development and road traffic evolutions), this thesis aims to assess the potential impact of urban forms on landscape connectivity of animal species’ ecological networks. This research work promotes a modelling approach both on the field of theoretical and quantitative geography and landscape ecology.This approach follows three main steps: (1) simulating residential development and its associated road traffic changes using five prospective scenarios of differentiated urban forms; (2) modelling landscape graphs of various animal species using land-cover maps and ecological data; (3) assessing the potential impacts of each scenario on ecological networks from these graphs using connectivity metrics, with measures of the connectivity decrease attributable to each residential development scenario. Contrary to sprawled cities, the results show that compact and dense urban forms best promote the maintenance of ecological connectivity for the majority of species groups. Further analysis highlights the great contribution of road traffic evolutions regarding the ecological impacts of each scenario.According to some sensitivity analysis, the model used is quite robust. It demonstrates the interest of modelling in the decision-making process for environmental conservation and urban planning to think out the city of tomorrow in a sustainable way., L’accélération du processus d’urbanisation, constatée à l’échelle mondiale depuis les dernières décennies, conduit à une artificialisation progressive des milieux naturels. La construction d’infrastructures de transport ou de nouveaux bâtiments fragmente les paysages de manière irréversible et cause une réduction des habitats écologiques et de leur connectivité. Le maintien de la fonctionnalité des réseaux écologiques, s’intègre désormais dans les politiques d’aménagement du territoire ou d’urbanisme soucieuses de la préservation de la biodiversité.En se focalisant plus particulièrement sur les évolutions urbaines à l’horizon 2030 dans l’Aire Urbaine de Besançon (développement résidentiel et variations de trafic routier), cette thèse cherche à évaluer l’impact potentiel des formes d’urbanisation sur la connectivité des réseaux écologiques des espèces animales. Ce travail de recherche privilégie l’approche par la modélisation en s’inscrivant à la fois dans le champ de la géographie théorique et quantitative et de l’écologie du paysage.L’application de cette démarche se fait en trois étapes : (1) simuler le développement résidentiel et ses évolutions de trafic associées à l’horizon 2030, à l’aide de cinq scénarios prospectifs présentant des formes urbaines différenciées ; (2) modéliser les réseaux écologiques de plusieurs espèces animales avec des graphes paysagers construits à partir de cartes d’occupation du sol et de données écologiques ; et (3) évaluer les impacts potentiels de chaque scénario sur les réseaux écologiques à partir de ces graphes à l’aide de métriques de connectivité, par mesure de la perte de connectivité imputable à chaque scénario de développement résidentiel.Les résultats obtenus montrent que les formes de villes denses et compactes, contrairement aux villes étalées, sont celles qui favorisent le mieux le maintien des connectivités écologiques pour la plupart des groupes d’espèces analysés. Des analyses plus approfondies mettent en avant la contribution importante des variations de trafic aux impacts écologiques de chaque scénario.D’après les analyses de sensibilité effectuées, le modèle utilisé est robuste, ce qui montre l’intérêt de la modélisation dans le processus d’aide à la décision pour la protection environnementale et la planification urbaine afin de penser la ville de demain de manière durable.
