- Abstract
IntroductionObjectivesMethods and ProceduresResultsConclusionsAphasia is the result of neurological damage that leads to disorders in the individual’s expressive and/or receptive language. Communication difficulties adversely impact various aspects of the person’s life, and relationships are no exception. Marital relationships might be influenced by health conditions, and possibly by aphasia. This study aimed to compare marital adjustment between couples in which one of the people suffered a stroke and had aphasia with couples in which the person who had a stroke did not have aphasia. This is a cross-sectional case-control, quantitative and qualitative study, which included people affected by stroke and their spouses, in which one of the people in the dyad had post-stroke aphasia of expression (study group) or stroke without aphasia (control group). Data collection was carried out by applying the study’s own questionnaire and the Revised and Validated Dyadic Adjustment Scale, Portuguese version, (RDAS-P) in person or by phone.35 participants were included, who were divided into a study group (n = 11) and a control group (n = 11); their marital partners were classified into partners of the study group (n = 7) and partners of the control group (n = 6). No statistically significant difference was observed between the groups regarding sociodemographic and clinical data, nor regarding the outcomes of interest. Different correlations were found into the groups. Qualitative results showed differences in the perception of changes in relationships in each group. There was no difference in measures of marital adjustment between individuals who had a stroke with and without aphasia. However, the varying correlations and reports found suggest that the groups experience marital issues differently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Clinical assessment in orofacial motricity is required for the speech therapist to diagnose and treat disorders involving the stomatognathic system. Validated tools can help establish a prognosis and outline intervention methods connected to human development. Objective The goal of the present study was to examine the domains of the oromyofunctional assessment of nursing infants and preschoolers according to sex and age group, as well as the application of the MMBGR Protocol – Nursing Infants and Preschool Children. Methods A quantitative technique was used to conduct an analytical and cross-sectional investigation. The present study included a total of 214 healthy breastfeeding infants and preschoolers of both sexes. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the medians. The Spearman correlation of each test domain was determined. R Core Team 2021 (R Foundation, Vienna, Austria) was used, and the significance threshold was set at 5%. Results In intraoral and extraoral examinations, there was a difference between sexes for tongue scores in nursing infants (d = - 0.428; p = 0.045), worse in males. When the orofacial functions were considered in nursing infants, there were differences between the sexes for the liquid/solid/semisolid deglutition scores (d = 0.479; p = 0.031), with females performing worse. There were sex differences in solid/semisolid deglutition (d = - 0.335; p = 0.043), and speech in preschoolers (d = - 0.478; p = 0.034), including the production of phones/phonemes (d = - 0.599; p = 0.007), which were always worse in males. Conclusion The research revealed sex disparities and related the domains of oromyofunctional assessment, according to scores, of the domains of myofunctional assessment, as recorded in a standardized oromyofunctional assessment protocol by age group. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to characterize word final prolongations in individuals with and without stuttering as well as to investigate the influence of end of words prolongations on speech fluency perception. In Experiment 1, 14 subjects were submitted to speech fluency evaluation for analysis of duration and average frequency of extended phones at the end of words. In Experiment 2, twenty lay judges were asked to judge the fluency degree of utterances without disfluency, utterances containing prolongations and utterances containing filled pauses. In experiment 1 the groups differed only in the duration’s variation; in both groups the prolongations in monosyllabic words prevailed; 80% of the prolonged phones in both groups were vowels. In experiment 2 no significant difference was found in the comparison between the judgements of prolongations and filled pauses. The utterances without disfluency differentiated themselves significantly from the others. We suggest that characteristics such as position in the word, duration and physical concomitants should be considered before deeming prolongations as a stuttering-like disfluency.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the effects of lingual frenotomy on the breastfeeding of infants, based on the electrical activity of the masseter and suprahyoid muscles and assessment of the breastfeeding. Methods Observational study developed between October 2017 and June 2018 with a sample of 20 newborns and infants who attended a dental clinic and were diagnosed with ankyloglossia. Another 20 were excluded for meeting some of the following exclusion criteria: babies more than 6 months old, who were not on exclusive or mixed breastfeeding, who had other clinical impairments that interfered with breastfeeding, who had other foods introduced into their diet, who had neurological changes and/or craniofacial deformities, and/or who did not finish all the stages of the study. Breastfeeding was assessed with the UNICEF Breastfeeding Assessment and Observation Protocol, while the muscle electrical activity was assessed with the Electrical Activity Assessment Protocol for the Masseter and Suprahyoid Muscles in Newborns During Breastfeeding. The same speech-language-hearing therapist conducted the two assessments both before the conventional frenotomy and 7 days after it. Results The signs suggestive of breastfeeding difficulties changed 7 days after the surgery, with a p-value ≤ 0.002 for general observation of the mother, position of the infant, latch, and sucking. The maximum voluntary contraction of the masseter was the only integral parameter with a difference, as the electrical activity had decreased. Conclusion Behaviors favorable to breastfeeding increased 7 days after the frenotomy in all the breastfeeding assessment categories, whereas the electrical activity of the masseter decreased.

Introduction. Contemporary occupational diseases are increasingly expressed by function disorders, which include voice disorders, forcing workers to request a leave of absence from work and leading to an incapacity to perform their work activities. Teachers have the higher prevalence of vocal disorders among the professionals who use their voices professionally, which is reported as the second cause of teaching work absences in Brazil. Objective. To analyze the environment and organization aspects of the teaching work associated with the development of voice disorder of teachers, according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Method. This study consisted of two steps. Initially, an integrative bibliographic review was performed to search for references related to the topic in the LILACS, MEDLINE and SCIELO databases, using the health descriptors "voice disorders" and "teachers". Then, the selected articles were read in full in order to identify the work factors associated with the voice disorder and compared with the theoretical framework of the ICF, in order to identify possible indicators of loss of functioning and capacity for teaching work resulting from voice disorders. Results. The presence of dust and noise were the most prevalent environment aspects. In turn, the high demand for work and the lack of autonomy to perform the work were identified as factors related to the organization of the work of the teaching work, as well as stress at work and the presence of situations of violence at school as the most reported work absences. Conclusion. As shown, the factors of teaching work described impact all components of functioning and lead to the incapacity of the teacher to work. The use of the ICF may contribute to systematize and quantify, in a standardized way, the loss of functioning and work capacity resulting from voice disorders, in addition to assisting in the development of public health promotion policies and in the prevention of vocal disorders in teachers.

AUDITORY perception , *MASKING (Psychology) , *CROSS-sectional method , *MILITARY personnel - Abstract
The aims of this study were to investigate auditory habits and binaural interaction among pilot and non-pilot military personnel from the Brazilian Air Force. A cross-sectional study using (1) an auditory habits questionnaire to outline the groups auditory profile and (2) the masking level difference test (MLD, Auditec, Saint Louis®) to evaluate and compare the groups. Forty military male personnel aged between 30–40 years old, all with normal hearing, comprising 20 pilots in the study group (SG), and 20 non-pilots, not exposed to noise, in the control group (CG). There was no significant difference between groups regarding auditory habits. In the MLD test, a significantly better performance under the homophasic condition (S0N0) was found in the SG. Under the antiphasic condition (SπN0) there were no differences between groups. This combination resulted in a significantly lower MLD in the SG compared to the CG. Repeated exposure to conditions where active pilots have to learn to recognise speech in noisy backgrounds may lead to a better performance in the MLD's homophasic condition (S0N0). Breast milk is considered a complete food and the immediate effects of breastfeeding on the babies'neurological development a re already recognized. This study aimed to describe the importance of continued breastfeeding and the influence of fatty acids on the infant's neurological maturation. For the study development, a systematic review was adopted, in which online search bases such as SciELO, PubMed a nd Google Scholar were used and whose publications comprised the period from 2008 to 2021. Out of the 969 articles found, 47 of them were selected that fulfilled the objective of the study. Breast milk is essential for the child's development and the benefits exten d into adulthood, such as less chance of developing obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypersensitivity reactions, respiratory and gastrointes tinal diseases. The mother-child bond is strengthened, enabling the child to develop emotionally, in addi tion to reducing the incidence of cancer in the mother. Breast milk has essential fatty acids (AGEs), such as linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid, which are essential for the development of neurological, visual and cellular activities. These compounds are present in breast milk in greater proportion than other types of milk and the more the mother ingests foods such as deep and cold water fish, seeds, flaxseed, chia, the greater the presence of AGEs and more benefits for the embryo-fetal period and for the infant. Thus, encouraging the breast milk consumption through suction improves stomatognathic functions, promoting harmonious orofacial growth, muscle balance, breathing coordination and proper tongue posture. ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate what effects lingual frenotomy has on breastfeeding. Methods: based on the research question - “Is there a relationship between the improvement in breastfeeding and the lingual frenotomy?” -, a bibliographical survey was carried out in three databases, using the following descriptors: ankyloglossia, lingual frenum, breastfeeding and frenotomy. Frenotomy is a free term. Original articles with babies up to 6 months old who had difficulties breastfeeding due to ankyloglossia and who had been submitted to lingual frenotomy were chosen. An instrument was developed, containing the following information: name of the authors, year of publication, country of origin, the objective of the study, type of study, sample, main results, and conclusion. Literature Review: of the 243 articles screened, four met the inclusion criteria for this study. It was observed that, after lingual frenotomy, some changes may take place in breastfeeding patterns, such as an increase in the number of suctions and a decrease in the time of pause in between series of suctions. Conclusion: the lingual frenotomy can be an important procedure in the treatment of babies with ankyloglossia, possibly helping improve the latch and breastfeeding.

Aim: The aim was to describe the effects of a transdisciplinary therapeutic group, including Psychology and Speech Pathology, with a child with an intellectual disability and her family. We also aimed to present the bureaucratic aspects faced to carry out this research in a small college. Method: Qualitative and descriptive research was conducted, with an experimental report on the whole project process and the implementation of therapeutic groups with a preteen diagnosed with intellectual disability and her family. The therapists were Psychology and Speech Therapy professionals and students. Results: Many challenges occurred in the process, such as: attracting participants, little engagement of students, and a project interruption due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, we were able to verify some progress; the family hired an occupational therapist to help them, for instance. They were also more engaged in promoting independence for the child. Conclusion: Research is underrated in Brazil, considering different places and situations. Implementing transdisciplinary groups can be a promising strategy for improving family relationships, communication, and independence of people with intellectual disabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is a motor and sensory, hereditary, distally predominant polyneuropathy. The lower limbs are most affected and, occasionally, there is upper limb impairment; however, presence of oropharyngeal dysphagia has been identified. The present study describes the findings and speech therapy intervention in a 58-year-old patient, with CMT diagnosis, referred to speech therapy evaluation due to swallowing complaints. In an initial evaluation, presence of structural and functional alterations, resulting in mild oropharyngeal dysphagia, was identified. The Swallowing Quality of Life questionnaire was also used to identify the impact of dysphagia in the patient's quality of life. After a month of follow-up, an improvement was observed in the presenting symptoms, as well as an increase in comfort and safety during swallowing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective: To compare and correlate musical performance anxiety (MPA) and vocal self-perception among amateur evangelical singers, focusing on the interaction between anxiety and aspects of performance in this sample., Method: This study employed a cross-sectional and quantitative approach, involving 75 amateur gospel singers from evangelical churches, aged between 18 and 59 years. Data collection included the administration of a sample identification and characterization questionnaire, the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI), and the Singing Voice Handicap Index (S-VHI). The descriptive analysis used absolute and relative frequencies, measures of central tendency, and dispersion (mean and standard deviation [SD]). To compare the vocal self-assessment protocols and performance aspects, the Kruskal-Wallis test was applied. Spearman's correlation test was used for correlation analysis. All analyses were conducted with a significance level set at 5% (P < 0.05)., Results: Vocal warm-up and cool-down activities, vocal discomfort after performance, and vocal self-assessment were significantly associated with scores on S-VHI, and the variable "instruments louder than voices" was associated with the K-MPAI score. Participants exhibited a mean K-MPAI score of 85.12 points (SD ± 36.6), and the vocal handicap of the sample had a mean score of 45.22 (SD ± 32.3). There was no statistically significant correlation between the protocols., Conclusion: Incorporating vocal warm-up and cool-down activities was significantly associated with lower scores on S-VHI. Conversely, those experiencing postperformance vocal discomfort exhibited higher scores on S-VHI. Moreover, the absence of correlation between the assessment protocols suggests that while significant levels of voice handicap were observed, a direct link to MPA cannot be definitively established. Overall, these findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted factors shaping vocal health and performance among amateur evangelical singers, thereby guiding future research and interventions in this field., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest None., (Copyright © 2024 The Voice Foundation. To analyze the cognitive strategies used in the verbal fluency test by healthy elderly without current risk of dementia. Method: Participants of the study were active elderly people, living in the countryside of the state of Sergipe, of both sexes. General identification data and health conditions were collected and the Mental State Mini Exam (MSME) and Verbal Fluency Semantics (VFS) test was applied. People with scores below the cut grade for schooling regarding the MSME were excluded from the survey. The results of these tests were analyzed qualitatively (normal or altered) and quantitatively (general score). In the VFS, the analysis was also performed according to the strategies used by the participant to recall the words (number of categories of animals cited, number of clusters performed (Clustering) and number of exchanges of cognitive strategy (Switching). The results were statistically analyzed by the Pearson correlation test. 33 elderly (25 females and 8 males) participated, with a mean age of 71.6 years old. The mean score in the MSME was 23.6 points and in the VFS it was 12.78 points, with a mean number of category used of 2.9, Clustering of 1.8 and Switching of 1.3. Pearson's correlation test identified important correlations between the VFS results and the number of the animals cited, Clustering and Switching categories used by the participants. Conclusion: Good general cognitive performance and language seems to be related to the cognitive strategies used in VFS, evidencing the importance of using this test in cognitive screening, even in cases of active elderly people.

PURPOSE: To describe the incidence and risk factors of communication, swallowing, and orofacial myofunctional disorders in a cohort of children and adolescents with cancer and benign neoplasms. METHODS: A prospective cohort study conducted with children aged ⩾ 2 years and adolescents of both genders admitted at the Pediatric Oncology Department of the Instituto Nacional de Câncer (INCA) between March 2014 and April 2015. Study participants were submitted to a Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) assessment at three different times: (T1) at hospital admission; (T2) six months after admission; (T3) one year after admission. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty individuals were evaluated. At the time of hospital admission, 68 individuals (42.5%) presented with some type of SLP disorder. After one year of follow-up, 22.8% of the patients had developed new impairments. The occurrence of new speech-language disorders had a statistically significant association with the tumor site. In the risk analysis for the development of speech-language disorders with respect to the primary tumor site, compared to other sites, the central nervous system (CNS) tumor group was 8.29 times more likely to present some new alterations, while the head and neck (HN) tumor group had a 10.36-fold higher risk. CONCLUSION: An incidence of 22.8% for communication, swallowing, and orofacial myofunctional disorders was observed. The development of these disorders was greater in individuals with tumors in the CNS and in the HN region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The objective of this study is to observe the efficacy of orofacial myofunctional therapy in children who breathe through their mouths "mouth breathers" using a clinical assessment and surface electromyography. Method: 30 nasal breath (control group) and 30 mouth breathers (study group) were evaluated initially, and the study group was re-evaluated after 12 sessions of orofacial myofunctional therapy. Assessments involved the MBGR protocol and surface electromyography. Results: The control group had significantly better scores on all nasal breathing tests compared to mouth breathers both before and after therapy. However, mouth breathers demonstrated statistically significant improvements over time with therapy. Conclusion: After twelve orofacial myology therapy sessions, the mouth breathers improved but not to normal levels. Inadequate muscular strength remained for the required tasks suggesting that additional therapeutic intervention is needed or that therapeutic success is inhibited by a vertical craniofacial growth pattern. - Abstract
Since dysphagia is of long duration, the actions of approaching the patient with this condition require the direct and permanent participation of the main caregiver. People with this role define the processes involved in the care of intake at home. From this perspective, the caregiver of the subject with dysphagia would be the one who should be fully trained in the aforementioned processes, not only as knowledge of the techniques used in rehabilitation but also as a form of approval of their use. In order to describe the relationship of the main caregiver in the use and management of consistency modification, a mixed registration process is proposed that allows the caregiver's perception of the use of this technique to be evidenced. The work is interesting as it shows how limiting aspects are concatenated with social determinants of health.

RESUMO Objetivo Apresentar a tradução e adaptação transcultural do Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale (ASRS) versão 3.5 para o português brasileiro. Seis itens obtiveram valores superiores a 0,9. Os demais itens apresentaram valores entre 0,8 e 0,9. O IVC-I e IVC-T apresentaram excelentes valores (IVC ≥ 0,78) para a relevância e viabilidade. ABSTRACT Purpose To present the translation into Brazilian Portuguese and cross-cultural adaptation of the Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale (ASRS) version 3.5. Methods Validation study restricted to translation and cross-cultural adaptation. The following steps were carried out: translation and synthesis of translations; verification of applicability of the scale synthesis by judges recruited for this purpose; analysis of the relevance and feasibility of the scale calculated by the Content Validity Index (CVI), individual (CVI-I) and total (CVI-T). Eighteen speech therapists were selected. Their answers were used for the analysis of agreement (intraclass correlation coefficients - ICC) and for the calculation of the Content Validity Index (CVI). Finally, the synthesis of the translation was matched in terms of semantic, idiomatic, experiential, conceptual, syntactic, grammatical, and operational equivalence. Results The ICC ranged between 0.83 and 0.94. Six items obtained values higher than 0.9. The other items presented values between 0.8 and 0.9. The CVI-I and CVI-T had excellent values (CVI ≥ 0.78) for relevance and feasibility. Conclusion The Brazilian version of the ASRS 3.5 presents semantic, idiomatic, experiential, conceptual, and syntactic/grammatical equivalence to the original document. Thus, it is ready for the next validation steps.

ABSTRACT Myotherapy intervention in facial aesthetics aims to attenuate wrinkles and signs of facial aging. The relationship between accentuated muscle contraction during chewing, swallowing and speaking and the appearance of facial wrinkles has been suggested by speech-language pathology literature. This study aimed to report the effect of electromyographic biofeedback associated with training of chewing, swallowing, and smiling patterns, during speech therapy intervention aimed at reducing the signs of facial wrinkles and furrows, in a 55-year-old woman. The therapy also included isotonic and isometric exercises and clinical procedures to decrease the contraction of facial mimicry muscles, which were not associated with training using electromyographic biofeedback. Signal collection and training were performed using the Biotrainer software on the New Miotool Face by Miotec, over nine weekly sessions. Two assessments were performed (before and after the nine sessions), using the MBGR Protocol (assessment of chewing, swallowing, and smiling) and validated scales described in the literature (assessment of signs of facial aging). In the reported case, the usefulness of electromyographic biofeedback was verified for learning trained orofacial myofunctional patterns, as well as to improve chewing and swallowing functions and decrease signs of facial aging. However, further research is needed to demonstrate the positive effects of electromyographic biofeedback associated with myofunctional therapy aimed at attenuating the signs of facial aging.

Purpose To analyze the effects of lingual frenotomy on the breastfeeding of infants, based on the electrical activity of the masseter and suprahyoid muscles and assessment of the breastfeeding.

INTRODUCTION: Oral transit time is one of the parameters observed during the clinical assessment of the swallowing function. The importance of this parameter is due to its impact on the total duration of a meal, whose consequence can be an unfavorable nutritional prognostic. OBJECTIVE: To document scientific papers that measure oral transit time in healthy subjects. METHOD: The review followed the steps proposed by the Cochrane Handbook. The search was done via the PubMed database through the use of descriptors related to the oral phase of swallowing, as well as to types of food consistency. RESULTS: The articles on the theme had different definitions for oral transit time, as well as heterogeneity of tested volumes, age and gender of the participants. The times found varied from 0.35 s to 1.54 s for liquids, from 0.39 s to 1.05 s for pasty foods and from 1 s to 12.8 s for solid foods. Also, regardless of volume or consistency, oral transit time in elderly people is significantly longer than in adults. CONCLUSION: There's no consensus in the literature about oral transit time in healthy subjects. However, this parameter should be valued during the assessment of the swallowing function due to its negative impact on the dynamics of swallowing, which can cause high energy expenditure during feeding.
