Black gobies (Gobius niger) from the Finnish Archipelago, Baltic Sea, were screened for helminth infections in summer 2020. Helminths were identified morphologically and/or molecularly. Altogether 26 novel sequences were generated and analysed using maximum likelihood estimation. Morphological and phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial genes revealed the presence of 8 species belonging to the Digenea (Diplostomum mergi Lineage 3), Cestoda (Bothriocephalus scorpii), Nematoda (Contracaecum rudolphii A, Cucullanus sp. and Hysterothylacium aduncum), and Acanthocephala (a putative new species of Corynosoma, Corynosoma semerme and Neoechinorhynchus sp.). Phylogenetic and comparative sequence analyses revealed that the putative new acanthocephalan species is closely related to C. neostrumosum described from the Caspian seal, Pusa caspica, in the Caspian Sea. The black goby represents a new host record for four parasite species (Diplostomum mergi Lineage 3, Contracaecum rudolphii A, Corynosoma semerme and Corynosoma sp.). The Finnish Archipelago is a novel locality record for three species (Corynosoma sp., Diplostomum mergi Lineage 3 and Bothriocephalus scorpii).

Genetic markers, DNA sequences and karyotypes, of some European lissorchiid species from their intermediate and final hosts were obtained to clarify controversial data about their life cycles and taxonomy, and to reveal phylogenetic affinities. The life cycles of three species have been confirmed for the first time based on molecular data. Comparative analysis of internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and partial 28S rDNA sequences has undoubtedly proven that cercariaeum of type-species of the genus Asymphylodora, Asymphylodora tincae, develops in pulmonate snails, Anisus vortex and Stagnicola palustris, but not in the genus Bithynia. The faucet snail, Bithynia tentaculata, serves as the first intermediate host for Parasymphylodora (=Asymphylodora) markewitschi and Parasymphylodora parasquamosa; adults of both species were isolated from the common rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus. It has also been confirmed that B. tentaculata serves as the second intermediate host for P. parasquamosa. Phylogenetic analysis supports the validity of the genus Parasymphylodora. Two species, Parasymphylodora markewitschi and P. parasquamosa, with cercariaeum belonging to the Parasquamosum group, are closely related and are being recovered as a well-defined evolutionary lineage in phylogenetic trees. A significant divergence between Parasymphylodora spp. and Asymphylodora spp. was revealed. The diploid chromosome set of P. markewitschi is composed of 14 chromosomes and does not show similarities with karyotypes of other lissorchiid species. Asymphylodora progenetica and Asymphylodora tincae share the basal diploid value of the family, 2n = 20, and reveal very close morphology of the corresponding chromosome pairs. Karyotypic similarities of these species are in accordance with molecular phylogenetic data. Thus, the available molecular and cytogenetic data support the assignment of P. markewitschi and P. parasquamosa to a separate genus, meanwhile, the assignment of A. progenetica to the genus Parasymphylodora was not justified. Abstract Background Within the genus Crepidostomum Braun, 1900, identification of species and taxonomic decisions made only on the basis of adult morphology have resulted in great problems associated with evaluating actual diversity and validity of species. Life-cycle data, while equal in importance to adult characters, are scarce, controversial or incomplete for most Crepidostomum spp. In this study, rDNA sequences generated from adult and larval Crepidostomum spp. and some other allocreadiid species were analysed to reveal the diversity and phylogenetic relationships of the species and their host range. Detailed morphological description based on light microscopy, SEM tegumental surface topography and genetic data are provided for the poorly known trematode C. oschmarini Zhokhov & Pugacheva, 1998 found in the intestine of two teleost fish species, Barbatula barbatula (L.) and Cottus gobio L. Results We characterized 27 isolates of adult and larval parasites. Based on newly obtained 28S and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA sequences, new intermediate and final hosts were ascertained, and life-cycles clarified for some allocreadiids. New knowledge on the diversity and phylogenetic relationships of European Crepidostomum spp. was gained. The validity of C. oschmarini was verified based on comparative sequence analysis. Ophthalmoxiphidiocercariae of C. oschmarini were recorded in sphaeriid bivalves Pisidium (Euglesa) casertanum (Poli). Additionally, morphological differences between gravid specimens of C. oschmarini and other related species were observed. Conclusions Species of the Allocreadiidae parasitizing fishes in Europe are distributed among two monophyletic genera, Allocreadium and Bunodera, and two paraphyletic Crepidostomum clades. A complex of Crepidostomum metoecus (syn. C. nemachilus), C. oschmarini and Crepidostomum sp. 2 clustered in one clade, and a complex of C. farionis, Crepidostomum sp. 1 and, probably, C. wikgreni in the other. Molecular data indicated that C. oschmarini and Crepidostomum sp. 2 presumably have a wide geographical distribution in Europe. The new data provided evidence that Crepidostomum is a more diverse genus than can be judged from morphological data and host switching in this genus may occur independently of fish-host phylogeny.

• All five species of lamnids and the only pseudocarchariid each host one or two unique species of Clistobothrium. • Larval stages and intermediate hosts are known for only four of these eight species of Clistobothrium. • Adults and their definitive hosts remain unknown for three larval forms from marine mammals. • The search for the marine mammal-consuming definitive host of these larvae continues. This study aimed to locate the adults, and thus also the definitive hosts, of three species of marine mammal-parasitising larval cestodes that have molecular affinities with Clistobothrium. New collections led to the discovery of adults of two new species of Clistobothrium , one from the longfin mako shark and one from the salmon shark. New material of Clistobothrium tumidum was collected from the great white shark and new material of a previously reported undescribed species of Clistobothrium was collected from the porbeagle shark. Larvae of Clistobothrium were opportunistically collected from sockeye salmon and four species of small squaliform sharks. Sequence data for the D1–D3 region of the 28S rDNA gene were generated for all but one of these taxa. The tree resulting from maximum likelihood analysis of those data, in combination with comparable data from GenBank, indicates that squaliform sharks can serve as intermediate hosts for the species from the porbeagle shark. The larvae from salmon exhibit a unique molecular signature and, based on diet data, may be conspecific with adults from the salmon shark. Informed by sequence data for new material of Monorygma and existing data for Phyllobothrium , the larvae provisionally identified as Monorygma grimaldii and Phyllobothrium delphini were formally transferred to Clistobothrium. Especially puzzling was that the molecular signatures of none of the eight species of Clistobothrium match those of the three marine mammal-parasitising larval forms. We are at a loss as to where else to look for the three corresponding adult forms. The great white shark remains the most likely candidate given it consumes marine mammals with some regularity, but seems unlikely to host five species of Clistobothrium. Objective analysis of several hundred thousand anticyclonic and cyclonic breaking Rossby waves is performed for the Northern Hemisphere (NH) winters of 1958–2006. A winter climatology of both anticyclonic and cyclonic Rossby wave breaking (RWB) frequency and size (zonal extent) is presented for the 350-K isentropic surface over the NH, and the spatial distribution of RWB is shown to agree with theoretical ideas of RWB in shear flow.Composites of the two types of RWB reveal their characteristic sea level pressure anomalies, upper- and lower-tropospheric velocity fields, and forcing of the upper-tropospheric zonal flow. It is shown how these signatures project onto the centers of action and force the velocity patterns associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Northern Hemisphere annular mode (NAM). Previous studies have presented evidence that anticyclonic (cyclonic) breaking leads to the positive (negative) polarity of the NAO, and this relationship is confirmed for RWB over the midlatitudes centered near 50°N. However, an opposite and statistically significant relationship, in which cyclonic RWB forces the positive NAO and anticyclonic RWB forces the negative NAO, is shown over regions 20° to the north and south, centered at 70° and 30°N, respectively.On a winter mean basis, the frequency of RWB over objectively defined regions covering 12% of the area of the NH accounts for 95% of the NAO index and 92% of the NAM index. A 6-hourly analysis of all the winters indicates that RWB over the objectively defined regions affects the NAO/NAM without a time lag. The Eurasian ruffe, Gymnocephalus cernuus L., has been recorded as a definitive host for Phyllodistomum folium (Olfers, 1816), P. angulatum Linstow, 1907 and P. megalorchis Nybelin, 1926 and as the type-host for P. pseudofolium Nybelin (1926). A wide range of other host fishes have been recorded for these species as well. All present host records have been based on light microscopy and the life-cycles of P. pseudofolium, P. angulatum and P. megalorchis are unknown. The validity of P. pseudofolium and P. megalorchis require verification. In this study, rDNA sequences generated from adult Phyllodistomum spp., as well as from larval stages developing in Pisidium amnicum Müller, were analysed to establish the real number of Phyllodistomum species utilizing G. cernuus, and to associate larvae with the corresponding adult forms. Results Phylogenetic analyses of adult and larval stages of Phyllodistomum spp. based on ITS2 and partial 28S rDNA data allowed the confirmation of the validity of P. pseudofolium. A macrocercous cercaria, known as Phyllodistomum sp. from P. amnicum is genetically identical to adult P. pseudofolium. Phyllodistomum megalorchis obtained from its type-host, Lota lota L., showed no genetic differences from P. angulatum parasitizing Sander lucioperca L. In our analysis, P. pseudofolium, P. angulatum and P. macrocotyle formed a highly supported clade despite the fact that these species appear to be associated with distinct patterns of first intermediate host identity and cercarial morphology. Some morphological differences between gravid specimens of P. pseudofolium and P. angulatum were observed and their SEM tegumental surface topography is described. Conclusions The results lead us to the perception that macroevolutionary host switching in the genus Phyllodistomum is independent of host phylogeny. This study suggests strict host-specificity (oioxeny) for P. pseudofolium using one first intermediate host species (P. amnicum) and one definitive host species (G. cernuus). Phyllodistomum megalorchis is to be regarded as a synonym of P. angulatum. The close phylogenetic relatives, P. pseudofolium and P. angulatum, can be differentiated by morphological traits, the micromorphology and tegumental surface topography of these two species is intended to provide useful data for their identification and support the use of such features as a valuable taxonomic criterion. Some previous work on arthropod development is insufficiently detailed or incompletely reported. Much of the published information in this area is of limited use for the general analysis of life cycles. These difficulties arise primarily because many experiments do not control fully for the strain of the material (and even its specific identity) nor for rearing conditions, do not adequately take account of the complexity of life cycles and their stages, or are restricted to only part of the life cycle. For example, 285such factors as variable numbers of instars, sexual differences, abbreviated or hidden stages and dormancies may mean that the "average durations" reported apply to an unknown mixture of developmental types. Nor are experiments always designed or results reported and analysed in a logical and transparent manner. Undefined terms may obscure what actual developmental intervals were measured. Highly derived developmental or demographic measures may obscure core data. Statistical information may be inadequate. Such pitfalls are reviewed here, suggesting ways to ensure that results on the duration of development are both valid for specific studies and more widely useful. General experimental difficulties, recommended background information that should be provided, recommended life-cycle intervals and their terminology, and recommended ways to report numerical and statistical information are briefly summarized in tabular form.

The article presents an opinion on whether seaweeds are a critical component of multicellularity of plants. Topics discussed include how unicellular organisms evolved to become multicellular, transition mechanisms for this evolution, and how this evolution plays a important part in some microorganisms adapting to their environment. Additional topics include the transition or marine plants to land and the importance of seaweeds to the understanding of evolution to multicellular organisms.

Abstract: Opisthorchis viverrini is one of the most common and medically important food-borne parasites in the Lower Mekong area of Southeast Asia. As we learn more about its ecology, pathology and epidemiology we see the need to consider more deeply the socio-cultural dynamics with which food-borne species complexes are associated. This paper argues that the Mekong region is characterized by strong livelihoods and life-style associations within wetland ecosystems, which are inseparable from human eating habits (“raw attitudes”). Within the fish-rice economies of the region there are many long-cherished food cultures based on eating raw, semi-cooked and fermented fish dishes, which are known to lead to opisthorchiasis, and potentially cholangiocarcinoma. This paper examines evidence from northeast Thailand showing that dedicated health outreach campaigns do help to reduce prevalence of opisthorchiasis over time. For disease prevention and health education approaches to be most effective, they must be sensitive to culture, livelihood economics, gender, and age. Further integrative, inter-disciplinary and international research must incorporate the complex dynamics of parasite ecology, human behavior, socio-economics, and public health awareness. The article investigates the parasite fauna and food composition of Coryphaenoides mediterraneus from the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone (CGFZ), a part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Different parasite species, most of them part of the Digenea and Nematoda, were found. Of the 12 adult and three larval parasites that occurred, the predominant species include the Allopodocotyle margolisi, Tetraphyllidea indet and Ascarophis longiovata. The position of the macrourid species within the benthopelagic food web along the MAR is determined by an analysis of prey items. The characteristic infection pattern within the unique deep-sea habitat is understood through a comparison with the parasite fauna of other deep-sea fish.

Information on the Aphis species that feed on evening primroses ( Oenothera spp.) has been summarized in the catalogue of the aphid species inhabiting herbaceous plants of the world (Blackman & Eastop, 2006). Recent descriptions of the European species, A. holoenotherae (Rakauskas, 2007), that appeared to be a sibling of the American A. oenotherae, demonstrated the need of reexamining the current state of knowledge of the Aphis species inhabiting evening primroses in Europe. The present study, based on published original data, revealed nine aphid species of the genus Aphis which are capable of living on Oenothera plants in Europe. Only two of them are really dependent on Oenothera species during their life cycle: A. oenotherae Oestlund and A. holoenotherae Rakauskas. They have different life cycles and host plant spectrum, although they are very close in their morphology. Processus terminalis length appeared to be the most reliable morphological character in distinguishing between apterous and alate viviparous females, and males of A. oenotherae and A. holoenotherae at the present time. A. grossulariae is not a typical Oenothera-feeder in Europe, occurring on evening primroses only by chance. Other Aphis species ( epilobiaria, fabae, sambuci, praeterita, frangulae, nasturtii), are opportunistic inhabitants of Oenothera plants. Information about host specificity and morphology of the Oenothera-inhabiting European Aphis species is summarized, and a key for the entire range of species found living on European Oenothera is provided. Abstract: The Holocene–late Pleistocene distribution of holococcoliths, is quantified by light microscopy from cores from the Western Mediterranean, the Aegean Sea and eight eastern Mediterranean cores recovering sapropel S1. The diversity of fossil holococcoliths is much lower than is seen in the plankton, indicating selective preservation. However the holococcolith phases of Syracosphaera pulchra and Helicosphaera carteri are abundantly preserved allowing a comparison of fossil records of heterococcolith and holococcolith phases of these species. In shallow cores a primary palaeocological signal appears to be preserved, suggesting that under suitable circumstances it is possible to use holococcoliths in palaeoceanography. The common occurrence of holococcoliths in the sapropels from these cores suggests low surface-water productivity, supporting previous inferences that productivity enhancement during sapropel deposition was confined to the deep-chlorophyll maximum. In deeper cores there is dramatic decrease in abundance of S. pulchra holococcoliths within sapropel sediments. From comparison of shallow and deep cores and from Emiliania huxleyi preservation data we conclude that this is a preservation signal. Evidently the calyptroliths produced by S. pulchra have a lower preservation potential than the syracoliths produced by H. carteri, we interpret this as a product of their more open structure. In all marine benthic environments, organism replacement depends on recruitment limitation, i.e. the impact of both pre- and post-settlement events on the success of recruitment. The relative contribution of pre- versus post-settlement processes in shaping adult populations has been extensively studied. Most analyses concluded that recruitment limitation is a strong determinant of adults’ density. The magnitude of its limitation depends on context, varies with species, and can be strongly modified by all the events preceding and following recruitment itself. A comparison of the outcome of recruitment limitation on hard- and soft-bottom communities has often been neglected. The rules governing these two environments, in both the inter- and the subtidal, might be inferred only by comparing and possibly integrating soft- and hard-bottom ecologies. The highly variable situation that larvae face in the water column is followed by the variability linked to local features, influencing, in its turn, larval settlement and juvenile survival (post-settlement period). A better knowledge of these processes will be possible only by focusing on their relative importance in the two environments and with research on the brief but significant time of larval settlement. The impact of river regulation on invertebrates has received comparatively little attention in the U.K., with most studies concentrating on the effects of impoundment. During dam construction invertebrate diversity and abundance decreases. Longer term alterations in community structure (which usually extend for a relatively short distance downstream) reflect changes in flow, substrate, temperature, and water quality. In particular adverse effects on invertebrates have been attributed to a reduction in substrate heterogeneity together with an accumulation of sediment. Responses to impoundment within and between taxonomic groups are highly variable. In general Ephemeroptera and Coleoptera are reduced. Of the Plecoptera the Perlodidae and Chloroperlidae are more likely to be adversely affected than the Nemouridae or Leuctridae. The impact of impoundment on net-spinning Trichoptera varies with reductions in some populations and enhancement in others. Simuliids are usually restricted, probably because of a lack of suitable oviposition or attachment sites. Freshets released from reservoirs increase the level of invertebrate drift. However, the full consequences of impoundment on drift, recolonization, and upstream migration have yet to be assessed. There is some evidence that modified temperature regimes cause extended egg hatching periods and alter larval growth rates but further studies are needed. Little is known of the effects of inter-river transfers on invertebrates, but it has been suggested that changes in flow velocity, water chemistry, suspended solids, and temperature together with translocation of organisms are all likely to be important. The limited information available for groundwater schemes indicates that they are not detrimental to invertebrates. Their impact, however, is dependent upon factors such as the extent and timing of flow augmentation. It is suggested that there is scope for positive management of invertebrate communities through river regulation, although at present attitudes and practices do not encourage this. Life cycles of California populations of the grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes, varied along an altitudinal gradient. Temperature records indicate a longer season at low altitude on the coast, based on computation of degree days available for development, even though summer air temperatures are cooler than at high altitude; this is a result of warm soil temperatures. At high and low altitudes there was a high proportion of diapause eggs oviposited, while intermediate proportions of diapause eggs occurred at mid altitudes. The low altitude, and especially sea level, populations diapaused at all stages of embryonic development, while at high altitudes most diapause occurred in the late stages just before hatch. Diapause was more intense at high altitudes. One result of diapause differences was delayed hatching in the sea level population. Nymphal development and development of adults to age at first reproduction were both accelerated at high altitude relative to sea level. At lower temperatures (27° C) there was a tendency for short days to accelerate development of sea level nymphs, but not high altitude nymphs. In both sea level and high altitude grasshoppers, short days accelerated maturation of adults to onset of oviposition at warm temperature (33° C); there was little reproduction at 27° C. Population differences for all traits studied appear to be largely genetic with some maternal effects possible. We interpret diapause variation at low and mid altitudes to be responses to environmental uncertainty and variations in development rates to be adaptations to prevailing season lengths. C. nemachilus), C. oschmarini and Crepidostomum sp. 2 clustered in one clade, and a complex of C. farionis, Crepidostomum sp. 1 and, probably, C. wikgreni in the other. Molecular data indicated that C. oschmarini and Crepidostomum sp. 2 presumably have a wide geographical distribution in Europe. The new data provided evidence that Crepidostomum is a more diverse genus than can be judged from morphological data and host switching in this genus may occur independently of fish-host phylogeny.
