In this study, Bi2O3/TiO2 composite was successfully synthesised using the solvothermal method, and the morphology, composition, and surface area of the composite were determined. Comparisons of photocatalytic performance were performed using Bi2O3/TiO2 for the decomposition of Atenolol (ATN) a β-blockers that is generally used to treat disorders such as hypertension and arrhythmias, as a model contaminant under visible light irradiation. The effects of different parameters such as solution pH, catalyst dosage, initial ATN concentration, reaction time, coexisting cations and anions, and turbidity on the degradation efficiency of ATN were investigated. An excellent synergistic effect was observed in the decomposition of ATN with the simultaneous application of Bi2O3/TiO2 and LED compared to single processes (synergistic index value, 4.027). The Bi2O3 catalyst has a much lower photocatalytic performance for the decomposition of ATN than the synthesised Bi2O3/TiO2 composite. The optimal rate for pH, catalyst dosage, and initial concentration of ATN was 7, 400 mg/l and 10 mg/l, respectively. Under optimal conditions, about 68.92% and 22.58% of ATN were degraded after 60 minutes in the presence of Bi2O3/TiO2 and Bi2O3 catalysts, respectively. However, these efficiencies are reduced to 51.83% and 12.4%, respectively, under 50 NTU. The addition of co-existing anions, especially PO43⁻, remarkably reduced the efficiency of ATN removal in the Bi2O3/TiO2/LED process. The presence of cations promoted the degradation of ATN in the Bi2O3/LED process, while the efficiency of ATN degradation was inhibited by the presence of cations in the Bi2O3/TiO2/LED process. The ATN removal efficiency using LED irradiation (49.02%) was much higher than that of UV-C irradiation (27.16%) when the concentration of ATN was 30 mg/L. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Light, an essential factor in plant development, exerts a significant impact on both primary and secondary metabolism in plants. Althaea officinalis, commonly known as marshmallow, offers versatile applications through its leaves and roots. With a plethora of identified bioactive compounds and their extensive use in food, health, and supplements, it is widely cultivated globally. This study aimed to demonstrate the definitive positive impact of dark and light irradiation on both primary and secondary metabolite production in A. officinalis hairy roots and to elucidate the light-responsive mechanism through integrated metabolome and transcriptome analysis. Results: When exposed to light, significant changes with a greenish colour shift were observed in 60 metabolites. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed a distinct separation between light- and dark-treated hairy roots, likely attributed to metabolites such as glutamic acid, phenylalanine, catechin hydrate, and chlorophyll. Correspondingly, the pathways significantly impacted included galactose metabolism, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, flavone and flavonol biosynthesis, and phenylalanine metabolism. Light-responsive differentially expressed genes associated with pigment and phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathways were analysed and compared via RNA sequencing. Furthermore, among the light-related transcription factors, including CONSTANS-LIKE and double B-box zinc finger, which are responsible for photomorphogenic modulation, were upregulated. Moreover, light-responsive genes, such as ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase, photosystem II, and chlorophyll A-B binding family protein, were upregulated. Conclusions: These findings emphasise that exposure of A. officinalis hairy root culture to light conditions is a useful method for enhancing most of the primary and secondary metabolites. ABSTRACT Photosensitizers and pigments in raw meat such as porphyrins, riboflavin, and myoglobin after incorporation with light beam prompt the generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) from triplet oxygen (3O2) and cause oxidative rancidity of meat products. In this study, the results of photooxidation reactions of sheep erythrocyte (red blood cell) model as a model rich in hemoglobin and phospholipids bilayer, and oleic acid model were obtained by 1H NMR spectroscopy, TBARS assay, and iodometric titration. In both models, the rate of lipid photooxidation in the presence of hydroalcoholic extracts of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) and Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) as natural antioxidants, Butyl hydroxytoluene (BHT) as a synthetic antioxidant, and sodium azide (NaN3) as a well‐known 1O2 scavenger were decreased in the order of NaN3 > Turmeric > Cumin > BHT. Metal-oxide nanocomposite materials provide a versatile platform with emerged novel phenomena for low-power optical, electronic and energy devices. In this work, heteroepitaxial La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 :Ag (LSMO:Ag) nanocomposite thin films were deposited on flexible mica substrates and the optical-electrical response was comprehensively investigated under compositional engineering and mechanical bending. With the change in Ag volume ratio, the response time and intensity for the light-induced resistance change is greatly modified. This modulation behaviour is understood based on a proposed band diagram, where the Fermi level alignment between Ag and LSMO heteroepitaxial interfaces provide additional carrier hopping routes which facilitates the carrier and energy transfer. Additionally, the response properties remain stable, with neglectable degradation over 40 cycles of in-situ mechanical bending and 50,000 cycles of fatigue tests, thus showing superior endurability. The flexible LSMO:Ag nanocomposite films exhibit great potential for high-performance, highly tunable, mechanically endurable and multifunctional optical-electronic applications. Two different layered MnO2 thin films with varying layering order of [Co(en)3] and (C12H25)2(CH3)2N ions were prepared, and their capacitances were measured. The top MnO2 layer containing (C12H25)2(CH3)2N ions between the layers inhibited the desorption of the [Co(en)3] complex and exhibited a higher capacitance (287.3 F/g) compared to a thin film with a top MnO2 layer of the [Co(en)3] complex. Furthermore, thin films with a MnO2 layer intercalated with (C12H25)2(CH3)2N ions were irradiated with light at 360, 460, and 560 nm, and their capacitances were measured. As a result, the thin film irradiated at 460 nm demonstrated the highest initial capacitance of 687.6 F/g and the highest cycle stability with a degradation rate of 3.2%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Healthcare‐associated infections remain a significant health concern, particularly with the emergence of antibiotic resistance. While these antibiotics have saved countless lives, their overuse reduces their efficacy promoting the emergence of multidrug‐resistant (MDR) bacteria. This prompts researchers to explore new alternatives for treating bacteria proliferation. In this context, antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has emerged as a promising approach for treating localized infections. It utilizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) as oxidative stress agents, thereby minimizing the risk of developing MDR. The success of aPDT significantly hinges on the careful selection of photosensitizers (PSs) and polymer matrices for the synthesis of polymer‐based photoactive materials. Various light‐absorbing PSs are therefore designed for enhancing ROS production and antimicrobial efficacy. By incorporating PSs into polymer matrices, these materials can harness the light power to generate ROS, destroying bacterial cells upon irradiation. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of advancements in this field, specifically focusing on the use of polymer‐based materials. The mechanism of the four main ROS generated in aPDT, the methods used for their detection, and their mode of action against bacteria has been outlined. Introduction: Light is a key factor in moderating human alertness, both subjective and objective. However, the methodology applies in research on the effects of exposure to light of different wavelengths and intensities on objective and subjective alertness varies greatly and evidence on objective alertness in particular is still inconclusive. Thus, the present, highly standardized within-subject laboratory study on N = 44 healthy males explored how LED light of different intensities (dim vs. bright light) and wavelengths (red vs. blue) affected objective (reaction time/RT) as well as subjective (sleepiness) alertness in the morning after wake-up. Methods: Participants spent two separate nights in the laboratory and were exposed to either one of the two light intensities or colors for 60 min after wake-up. Additionally, they indicated their sleepiness on the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale and participated in an auditory RT task before and after light intervention. It was hypothesized that both bright and blue light would lead to greater subjective and objective alertness when compared to dim and red light, respectively. Results: Results indicated that average RTs were longer for participants in the bright light condition (p = 0.004, f2 = 0.07) and that RTs decreased post-light exposure irrespective of light being dim or bright (p = 0.026, f2 = 0.07). However, dim versus bright light and RT did not interact (p = 0.758, f2 = 0.07). Chronotype was a significant covariate in the interaction of dim versus bright light and subjective sleepiness (p = 0.008, f2 = 0.22). There was no difference in RTs when comparing exposure to red or blue light (p = 0.488, f2 = 0.01). Findings on subjective sleepiness and light of different wavelengths revealed that sleepiness was reduced after light exposure (p = 0.007, f2 = 0.06), although the wavelength of light did not appear to play a role in this effect (p = 0.817, f2 = 0.06). Conclusion: Hence, neither of the hypotheses could be confirmed. However, they indicated that evening types might benefit from exposure to bright light regarding sleepiness, but not morning types. Precious metals are valuable materials for the chemical industry, but they are scarce and pose a risk of supply disruption. Recycling precious metals from waste is a promising strategy, here we tactfully utilize light irradiation as an environmental‐friendly and energy‐saving adjunctive strategy to promote the reduction of precious metal ions, thereby improving the adsorption capacity and kinetics. A newly light‐sensitive covalent organic framework (PP‐COF) was synthesized to illustrate the effectiveness and feasibility of this light auxiliary strategy. The equilibrium adsorption capacities of PP‐COF with light irradiation towards gold, platinum, and silver ions are 4729, 573, and 519 mg g−1, which are 3.3, 1.9, and 1.2 times the adsorption capacities under dark condition. Significantly, a filtration column with PP‐COF can recover more than 99.8 % of the gold ions in the simulated e‐waste leachates with light irradiation, and 1 gram of PP‐COF can recover gold from up to 0.15 tonne of e‐waste leachates. Interestingly, the captured precious metals by PP‐COF with light irradiation mainly exist in the micron‐sized particles, which can be easily separated by extraction. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and cytotoxicity of experimental 6% and 35% hydrogen peroxide gels (HP6 or HP35) incorporated with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (NP) co-doped with nitrogen and fluorine and irradiated with a violet LED light (LT). Methods: Bovine enamel-dentin disks adapted to artificial pulp chambers were randomly assigned to bleaching (n = 8/group): NC (negative control), NP, HP6, HP6 + LT, HP6 + NP, HP6 + NP + LT, HP35, HP35 + LT, HP35 + NP, HP35 + NP + LT, and commercial HP35 (COM). Color (ΔE00) and whiteness index (ΔWID) changes were measured before and 14 days after bleaching. The extracts (culture medium + diffused gel components) collected after the first session were applied to odontoblast-like MDPC-23 cells, which were assessed concerning their viability, oxidative stress, and morphology. The amount of HP diffused through the disks was determined. Data were analyzed by generalized linear models or Kruskal Wallis Tests (α = 5%). Results: HP6 + NP + LT exhibited ΔE00 and ΔWID higher than HP6 (p < 0.05) and similar to all HP35 groups. HP6 + NP + LT showed the lowest HP diffusion, and the highest cell viability (%) among bleached groups, preserving cell morphology and number of living cells similar to NC and NP. HP6 + LT, HP6 + NP, and HP6 + NP + LT exhibited the lowest cell oxidative stress among bleached groups (p < 0.05). HP35, HP35 + LT, and HP35 (COM) displayed the lowest cell viability. Conclusion: HP6 achieved significantly higher color and whiteness index changes when incorporated with nanoparticles and light-irradiated and caused lower cytotoxicity than HP35 gels. The nanoparticles significantly increased cell viability and reduced the hydrogen peroxide diffusion and oxidative stress, regardless of HP concentration. Clinical Significance: Incorporation of co-doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles combined with violet irradiation within the HP6 gel could promote a higher perceivable and acceptable efficacy than HP6 alone, potentially reaching the optimal esthetic outcomes rendered by HP35. Many cell culture experiments are performed under light to evaluate the photodynamic or photosensitizing efficacy of various agents. In this study, the modulation of photosensitizing responses and phototoxicity under cell culture conditions by different medium components was investigated. The significant levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated from DMEM, RPMI 1640, and MEM were observed under the irradiation of fluorescent light (FL) and white and blue LEDs, indicating that these media have their own photosensitizing properties; DMEM showed the most potent property. Phenol red-free DMEM (Pf-D) exhibited a stronger photosensitizing property than normal DMEM by 1.31 and 1.25 times under FL and blue LEDs, respectively; phenol red and riboflavin-free DMEM (PRbf-D) did not show any photosensitizing properties. The inhibitory effect on light transmission was more pronounced in DMEM than in RPMI, and the interference effect on green LED light was greatest at 57.8 and 27.4%, respectively; the effect disappeared in Pf-D. The media containing riboflavin induced strong phototoxicity in HaCaT keratinocytes by generating H2O2 under light irradiation, which was quenched by sodium pyruvate in the media. The presence of serum in the media was also reduced the phototoxicity; H2O2 levels in the media decreased serum content dependently. The phototoxicity of erythrosine B and protoporphyrin IX under FL was more sensitively pronounced in PRbf-D than in DMEM. The present results indicate that several medium components, including riboflavin, phenol red, sodium pyruvate, and serum, could modulate photosensitizing responses in a cell culture system by inducing photosensitizing activation and by interfering with irradiation efficacy and ROS generation. In this study, porous polymers with nitrogen heterocyclic core structures are synthesized through the condensation of enaminonitrile and terephthalaldehyde monomers. These polymers are used as a platform to store bioactive nitric oxide (NO) and control its release. NO loading is achieved by nitrosating the polymers with acidified nitrite, a process that also imparts photoresponsivity to the polymers. Polymer composition and porosity affect NO storage and release. It is observed that under UV light at 365 nm in a PBS solution, the polymers (NO@DHP‐POP) can release NO in a manner fully controlled by UV lighting. Under experimental conditions, these porous polymers release NO at a rate of ≈10.0–50.0 µmol g−1 over 60 min. Light influences circadian rhythms, including that of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol, in turn, has been observed to promote expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. It is thus of interest whether the cytokine IL-10 is also influenced by light, perhaps in accord with the diurnal variations in cortisol. Hence, this highly standardized preliminary sleep laboratory study in healthy adult men investigated a potential influence of different light exposure on IL-10 and cortisol concentrations in blood. In a between-subject design, N = 42 participants were exposed to either bright, dim, blue or red light after wake-up. Two mixed-model analyses with the factors of light condition and time (across eight IL-10 and cortisol sampling points) were conducted. Additionally, area under the curve measurements (AUCg and AUCi) were calculated for both cortisol and IL-10. Across all conditions, IL-10 and cortisol concentrations significantly changed over time. However, none of the light conditions exerted a greater influence on IL-10 or cortisol levels than others. For cortisol, there was greater total output (AUCg) in the blue-light condition in particular. Further research is needed to gain insight into whether or not types of light or cortisol levels have a hand in influencing natural IL-10 concentrations.

Photo-stimuli responsive materials show great potential in the fields of information encryption and storage due to their distinctive spatial or temporal color changes. However, the conventional single or multi-color static outputs by light stimulus difficulty meet practical requirements for high-security optical storage technologies. Here, a novel dynamic irradiation-responsive phosphor of Na2Ba2Si2O7:Eu is demonstrated, exhibiting high storage stability and convenient readout behaviors. The inherent Eu2+ luminescence can be dynamically tuned, instantly read out, and conveniently erased by controlling irradiation duration of a portable diode laser (365 nm). The modulation mechanism is unraveled by optically induced oxidation reactions of Eu2+→Eu3+ and defects as killer centers. The excellent luminescence modulation degree (ΔRt = 89.5%) and the accompanying larger color contrast enable the creation of invisible optical codes with multi-level encryption in bright or dark field. These results indicate potential applications of Na2Ba2Si2O7-based materials in information encryption and invisible optical storage, and are expected to expand more investigations on optically induced PL modulation behaviors based on mixed valences and defects.

Effects of autoxidation and light irradiation on the oxidative stability were evaluated in rice oil from two brown rice flours including 'Baromi2' and 'Samkwang'. 'Baromi2' is a newly developed variety for rice flour production while 'Samkwang' is a typical rice variety as a control. Degree of oxidation and volatile profiles were evaluated in rice oil stored at 60 °C or under fluorescent light at 25 °C. The oil yields of 'Baromi2' and 'Samkang' were 2.63 and 1.78%, respectively whereas rice oil from 'Baromi2' had lower degree of unsaturation than 'Samkang'. Rice oil from 'Samkwang' possessed higher volatile compounds and more oxidized products during autoxidation whereas rice oil from 'Baromi2' had more oxidation products under light irradiation. Hexanal and 2-heptenal were major headspace volatile from heated rice oil while 2-heptenal and 1-octene-3-ol were main volatiles from light irradiated rice oil, which implies the involvement of singlet oxygen in rice oil during photooxidation. Photo‐induced reversible complexation‐mediated polymerization (RCMP) is a green and economical method to prepare polymers with precise molecular weights, narrow molecular weight distributions and functionally active chain ends. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a promising heterogeneous photocatalyst for mediating RCMP due to their adjustable structure, band gap, and porosity. In this work, 1,3,5‐triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and p‐azoaniline (Azo) were selected to construct 2D β‐ketoenamine linked Tp‐Azo‐COF as a heterogeneous photocatalyst to trigger RCMP under white light irradiation. A series of polymers with controllable molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution were successfully prepared by using Tp‐Azo‐COF as photocatalysis. On/off light experiments confirmed the good spatiotemporal control feature, and chain expansion experiments demonstrated the high "activity" of polymer chain ends. Furthermore, the mechanistic research elucidated that electron transfer between Tp‐Azo‐COF and initiator occurred, allowing the formation of reactive radicals to mediate RCMP. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the coordination of iodine on the initiator to catalyst obviously reduced the bond dissociation energy, leading to enhance in the polymerization rate. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ferulic acid (FA), a natural phenolic phytochemical, in combination with light irradiation at three wavelengths (365, 385 and 405 nm) on the concentration and toxicity of deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium graminearum. Moreover, this study examined the influence of the combination treatment on DON production in the cultured fungus. FA activated by light at a peak wavelength of 365 nm exhibited the most effective decrease in DON concentration of the tested wavelengths; a residual DON ratio of 0.23 at 24 h exposure was observed, compared with the initial concentration. The reduction in DON using 365-nm light was dependent on the concentration of FA, with a good correlation (r2 = 0.979) between the rate constants of DON decrease and FA concentration, which was confirmed by a pseudo-first-order kinetics analysis of the photoreaction with different FA concentrations (50–400 mg/L) for 3 h. The viability of HepG2 cells increased by 56.7% following in vitro treatment with a mixture containing the photoproducts obtained after treatment with 20 mg/L DON and 200 mg/L FA under 365-nm irradiation for 6 h. These results suggested that the photoreaction of FA under 365-nm irradiation induces the detoxification of DON through degradation or modification of DON. The antifungal effects of the combination (FA and 365-nm light) on F. graminearum were investigated. Conidia treated with the combination did not show additive or synergistic inhibition of fungal biomass and DON production in 7-day cultivated fungal samples compared with samples after single treatment. However, successive treatment, composed of 90 min irradiation at 365 nm and then treatment with 200 mg/L FA for 90 min in the dark, suppressed fungal growth and DON yield to 70% and 25% of the untreated sample level, respectively. This photo-technology involving the two treatment methods of 365-nm irradiation and FA addition as a food-grade phenolic acid in combination or successively, can aid in developing alternative approaches to eliminate fungal contaminants in the fields of environmental water and agriculture. Polymeric photocrosslinked networks, of particular interest in the design of materials with targeted characteristics, can be easily prepared by grafting light-sensitive moieties, such as methacrylates, on polymeric chains and, after photochemical reactions, provide materials with multiple applications via photopolymerization. In this work, photopolymerizable urethane–methacrylate sequences were attached to free hydroxyl units of cellulose acetate chains in various proportions (functionalization degree from 5 to 100%) to study the properties of the resulting macromolecules and the influence of the cellulosic material structure on the double bond conversion degree. Additionally, to manipulate the properties of the photocured systems, the methacrylate-functionalized cellulose acetate derivatives were mixed with low molecular weight dimethacrylate derivatives (containing castor oil and polypropylene glycol flexible chains), and the influence of UV-curable composition on the photopolymerization parameters being studied. The achieved data reveal that the addition of dimethacrylate comonomers augmented the polymerization rates and conversion degrees, leading to polymer networks with various microstructures. Coronaviruses (CoVs) belong to the group of enveloped positive-sense single-strand RNA viruses and are causative agents of respiratory, gastro-intestinal, and central nervous systems diseases in many host species, i.e., birds, mammals, and humans. Beta-CoVs revealed a great potential to cross the barrier between species by causing three epidemics/pandemics among humans in the 21st century. Considering the urgent need for powerful antiviral agents for decontamination, prevention, and treatment of BCoV infections, we turned our attention to the possibility of photodynamic inactivation with photosensitizers in combination with light irradiation. In the present study, we evaluated, for the first time, the antiviral activity of toluidine blue O (TBO) against Beta-coronavirus 1 (BCoV) in comparison to methylene blue (MB). First, we determined the in vitro cytotoxicity of MB and TBO on the Madin–Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cell line with ISO10993-5/Annex C. Thereafter, BCoV was propagated in MDBK cells, and the virus titer was measured with digital droplet PCR, TCID50 assay and plaque assay. The antiviral activity of non-toxic concentrations of TBO was estimated using the direct inactivation approach. All effects were calculated in MAPLE 15® mathematical software by developing programs for non-linear modeling and response surface analysis. The median inhibitory concentration (IC50) of TBO after 72 h of incubation in MDBK cells was 0.85 µM. The antiviral activity of TBO after the direct inactivation of BCoV (MOI = 1) was significantly stronger than that of MB. The median effective concentration (EC50) of TBO was 0.005 µM. The cytopathic effect decreased in a concentration-dependent manner, from 0.0025 to 0.01 µM, and disappeared fully at concentrations between 0.02 and 0.3 µM of TBO. The number of virus particles also decreased, depending on the concentration applied, as proven by ddPCR analysis. In conclusion, TBO exhibits significant potential for direct inactivation of BCoV in vitro, with a very high selectivity index, and should be subjected to further investigation, aiming at its application in veterinary and/or human medical practice. Strategies for clean energy are important components of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To this end, we have studied the conductivity of a Cd(II)-based 3D coordination polymer, [Cd(succ)(pcih)(H2O)]n (1) (H2succ = succinic acid; pcih = pyridine-4-carboxaldehyde iso-nicotinoyl hydrazone). Compound 1 was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The bridging groups, succ2− and pcih, self-assembled via H-bonding and π∙∙∙π interactions. The optical band gap calculated from a Tauc's plot was determined to be 3.71 eV which is consistent with semiconducting behavior. The experimental barrier height, 0.71 eV (dark phase); 0.49 eV (light phase) and series resistance, 358.48 Ω (dark); 133.73 Ω (light), also support the photoinduced enhancement of conductivity. The non-ohmic relation, I α V2, showed an enhancement of conductivity by 2.5 times upon light irradiation [3.36 × 10−6 S m−1 (dark) and 8.37 × 10−6 S m−1 (light)]. DFT computations employing the crystallographic parameters of 1 indicated a HOMO/LUMO energy gap of 4.06 eV, within the range of semiconducting materials. Electrostatic self-assembly of macroions is an emerging area with great potential in the development of nanoscale functional objects, where photo-irradiation responsiveness can either elevate or suppress the self-assembly. The ability to control the size and shape of macroion assemblies would greatly facilitate the fabrication of desired nano-objects that can be harnessed in various applications such as catalysis, drug delivery, bio-sensors, and actuators. Here, we demonstrate that a polyelectrolyte with a size of 5 nm and multivalent counterions with a size of 1 nm can produce well-defined nanostructures ranging in size from 10–1000 nm in an aqueous environment by utilizing the concept of electrostatic self-assembly and other intermolecular non-covalent interactions including dipole–dipole interactions. The pH- and photoresponsiveness of polyelectrolytes and azo dyes provide diverse parameters to tune the nanostructures. In this paper, we describe the methods and conditions to increase the yield of Iz by employing photooxidation reactions using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with emission wavelengths of 365 nm and 450 nm. For photooxidation performed with the 450 nm LED source at light intensities of 2.75–275 mW/cm2, peak yields of Iz were 35% at light intensities of 27.5 and 68.8 mW/cm2. For reactions performed with the 365 nm LED source at light intensities of 5.12–512 mW/cm2, the peak yield of Iz was 34% at a light intensity of 51.2 mW/cm2. By varying the irradiation time, the maximum yield of Iz (34–35%) was obtained with irradiation times of 5–20 min using the 450 nm LED source at an intensity of 13.8 mW/cm2. Using the 365 nm LED source at an intensity of 25.6 mW/cm2, the maximum Iz yield obtained was 31% at irradiation times of 2–5 min. Thus, we obtained conditions that can provide an Iz yield of up to 35%.

This review conveys the design, photochemical properties and essential mechanism of the most important phototriggered structures for the release of single and dual (similar or different) active molecules that have the ability to quickly reason of the large variety of dynamic biological phenomena for biomedical applications like photo-regulated drug release, synergistic outcomes, real-time monitoring, and biocompatibility potential.

2H-azirines have represented versatile building motifs in the domain of organic chemistry owing to their excellent reaction activity induced by the high strain of the three-membered ring species. Over the past decades, brilliant achievements have been made in 2H-azirine chemistry involving the construction as well as the transformation of such functional compounds. In the presence of transition metals, strong bases or oxidants, 2H-azirines could be converted into the corresponding products under harsh reaction conditions. Different from traditional catalytic methods, the utilization of photochemistry has proved to be an extremely fascinating protocol that facilitates the construction of 2H-azirine blocks from diverse substrates and further conversion into various derivatives with interesting biological activities. In this regard, more and more light-driven synthetic approaches featuring high efficiency and mild conditions have been developed. Herein, we summarized the accessibility and applications of 2H-azirines as powerful precursors or key intermediates for the synthesis of biologically promising molecules in the presence of photocatalytic conditions.

Potatoes are the fourth major food crop in the world. Higher levels of glycoside alkaloids (GAs) lead to detrimental effects on the edibility and processing qualities. GAs are largely influenced by light; however, the mechanisms of this regulation by light are not well understood. By analyzing the bioinformatics of the phytochrome genes (PHYs) in potatoes, its expression level, the content of GAs and the correlation between them under different lights, this study aims to reveal the specific mechanism of light-regulated GAs accumulation and provide a theoretical basis for improved potato processing. Results based on high-performance liquid chromatography and imaging mass microscopy showed that red light induced a significant increase in α-chaconine and α-solanine accumulation compared to white light, but there was almost no accumulation in the dark within 12 days. Meanwhile, a bioinformatic analysis of PHY gene family members was performed, and the results showed that the five StPHYs were distributed on chromosomes 1, 2, 5, 7 and 10, with amino acid counts ranging from 704 to 1130. StPHYs genes have abundant light-responsive elements. Also, the expression patterns of StPHYs were dramatically induced by red light. Additionally, a correlation analysis showed that the GAs accumulation was significantly correlated with StPHYs expression. This study investigates the incorporation of active secondary amine moieties into the polymer backbone by co‐polymerizing 2,4,6‐tris(chloromethyl)‐mesitylene with three diamines, namely 1,4‐diaminobutane, m‐phenylenediamine, and p‐phenylenediamine. This process results in the stabilization of the amine moieties and the subsequently introduced nitroso groups. Charging bioactive nitric oxide (NO) into the polymers is accomplished by converting the amine moieties into N‐nitroso groups. The ability of the polymers to store and release NO depends on their structures, particularly the amount of incorporated active secondary amines. With grafting photosensitive N‐nitroso groups into the polymers, the derived NO@polymers exhibit photoresponsivity. NO release is completely regulated by adjusting UV light irradiation. These resulting polymeric NO donors demonstrate remarkable bactericidal and bacteriostatic activity, effectively eradicating E. coli bacteria and inhibiting their growth. Thanks to supramolecular interactions of macrocyclic compounds with their guest ions or molecules, macrocycles have found wide applications in molecular and chiral recognition, separation, transportation, molecular machines, and so on. Photoswitchable macrocycles are especially appealing and attracting more and more interest because the embedded molecular photoswitch enables dynamic control of molecular shape, conformation, and different properties by light, a non‐invasive, remote and highly tunable stimulus. With available photochromic compounds, various photoswitchable macrocycles have been developed. In this review paper, we describe the recently reported photoswitchable macrocyclic compounds, with a focus on the control of the macrocyclic structure, dynamic, photo or thermal isomerization, as well as their applications on encapsulation and release of ionic or aromatic species, on the reversible modulation of chemical, biological, electronic, fluorescent and chiroptical properties by light. Light-responsive rotaxane-based solid-state materials are ideal scaffolds in order to develop smart materials due to the properties provided by the mechanical bond, such as control over the dynamics of the components upon application of external stimuli. This perspective aims to highlight the relevance of these materials, by pointing out recent examples of photoresponsive materials prepared from a rotaxanated architecture in which motion of the counterparts and/or macroscopic motion of the interlocked materials are achieved. Although further development is needed, these materials are envisioned as privileged scaffolds which will be used for different advanced applications in the area of molecular machinery.

Discriminating appropriate two-dimensional (2D) photocatalysts for hydrogen generation is among the most prospective schemes to tackle with environmental contaminations. Unfortunately, the inferior capability to harvest solar light together with fast recombination of photoexcited carriers can severely reduce the catalytic ability with consequent limited commercial applications. In this work, a series of single-layer MXY (M = Ge, Sn; X, Y = S, Se, and Te) containing T- and H-phases about photocatalytic capabilities are systematically explored by first-principles calculations. First, the T- and H-MXY monolayers possess transformable band gaps of 0–2.37 and 0–1.49 eV, respectively. Astonishingly, the values of T-GeS2, T-SnS2, T-SnSe2, T-SnSSe, and H-SnS2 monolayers are higher than the threshold of redox potential difference (1.23 eV). Also, importantly, the carrier mobilities of anisotropic T-MXY monolayers can reach ∼1 × 104 cm2 V–1 s–1, which can rapidly transfer and accelerate the separation of the photoexcited carriers during photocatalytic reactions. Inspired by these significant benefits, the T-MXY monolayers have been built for photocatalytic water-splitting. Significantly, the driving force of photoexcited carriers in T-SnX2 and Janus T-SnSSe monolayers can greatly promote during the redox reactions. Furthermore, the hydrogen reduction and water oxidation reactions of T-SnX2 and T-SnXY monolayers can proceed spontaneously under irradiation. In addition, the few-layer and even monolayer T-SnS2 and T-SnSe2 have been experimentally synthesized in the literature. The potential photocatalysts of single-layer T-MXY have the 0.25–0.29 J m–2 cleavage energies, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations further validate their stability. Light is essential for plants and plays a vital role in their growth and development. Light irradiation affects the physiological characteristics and synthesis of secondary metabolites in plants. As a semi-shade perennial plant, Panax ginseng C.A. Mey. is sensitive to changes in the light environment. Different light irradiations significantly affect the secondary metabolic processes of P. ginseng. However, few studies have investigated the changes in ginsenoside content in P. ginseng under different light irradiation conditions. In this study, 3-year-old P. ginseng was cultured under white (CK) light, blue (B) light, red (R) light, green (G) light, and natural light (NL) to explore the effects of light irradiation on the physiological characteristics and ginsenoside secondary metabolism of P. ginseng. The B and CK treatments significantly increased the photosynthetic level in P. ginseng leaves. The total saponin content under blue and red light treatments increased by 28.81% and 21.64%, respectively, compared with the CK treatment. Blue and red light improved the transcription levels of ginsenoside biosynthetic pathway genes. Blue light upregulated the expression of HMGR, SS, SE, DS, CYP716A52, and CYP716A47, and the expression of HMGR, SS, SE, DS, and CYP716A47 under red light treatment was significantly upregulated in P. ginseng roots. Principal component and correlation analyses revealed that the physiological and ecological processes of P. ginseng exhibited different responses to light irradiation. The total saponin content in the roots was positively correlated with the content of protopanaxatriol -type ginsenosides and water use efficiency in leaves. Our study indicates that light conditions can be improved by blue and red light or by blue and red film covering to facilitate the accumulation of saponin during the ecological cultivation of P. ginseng. Annealing of sprayed pure and Mg doped CuCrO _2 thin films by high intensity, short time light irradiation leads to a single delafossite phase at comparatively low temperatures compared with traditional furnace annealing. P-type crystalline undoped and Mg-doped CuCrO _2 films were obtained within few minutes by annealing with halogen lamp between 550 °C and 650 °C in Ar atmosphere. Transport properties of Mg-doped thin films were comparable to furnace annealed samples despite much shorter annealing time. The results demonstrate that post-annealing of chemically deposited samples using light irradiation is an effective and fast method for obtaining transparent conducting delafossite thin films.

Light irradiation plays an important role in the growth of microalgae and their nutrient composition. To elucidate the effect of different LED lights (red, orange, green, blue, purple, simulated sunlight, and white) on the main nutritional compositions of Isochrysis zhanjiangensis, the growth, fatty acid composition, soluble carbohydrate, and soluble protein contents were studied. The results show that I. zhanjiangensis grew the fastest under blue light (p = 0.044). In terms of fatty acid composition, the percentage of myristic acid (C14:0) decreased significantly (p = 0.021) under blue light and simulated sunlight, but the percentages of palmitic acid (C16:0) (p = 0.032) and stearic acid (C18:0) (p = 0.037) significantly increased. The percentage of docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3) increased under orange light (p = 0.021), and the percentage of total unsaturated fatty acids increased under blue light (p = 0.008). The protein content significantly increased under simulated sunlight (p = 0.025), while the carbohydrate content did not vary much (p > 0.05) under different lights. Small gold nanoparticles (GNPs) show special catalytic activity for hydrogen (H2) dissociation reaction, which is essential and important in understanding the hydrogen oxidation reaction in hydrogen energy source. To insight on catalytic properties of GNPs, we simulated H2 dissociation paths on neutral gold clusters (GCs) Aun (n = 1–6) and positively charged GCs Aun+ (n = 3–5), which are possible active sites on GNPs. The calculated results show that H2 dissociation on GCs follows a homolytic cleavage reaction process. Light irradiation and water environment are considered for H2 dissociation on Aunδ+ (n = 3–5, δ = 0 and +1) clusters. The calculated results show that when the incident light has a low energy close to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) region of GNPs, the light can effectively reduce the H2 dissociation barrier, and an oxidation dissociation process is found for the water‐assisted H2 dissociation reaction. It is highly desired to achieve controllable product selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation. Herein, we report light‐induced switching of reaction pathways of CO2 hydrogenation towards CH3OH production over actomically dispersed Co decorated Pt@UiO‐66‐NH2. CO, being the main product in the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) pathway under thermocatalysis condition, is switched to CH3OH via the formate pathway with the assistance of light irradiation. Impressively, the space‐time yield of CH3OH in photo‐assisted thermocatalysis (1916.3 μmol gcat−1 h−1) is about 7.8 times higher than that without light at 240 °C and 1.5 MPa. Mechanism investigation indicates that upon light irradiation, excited UiO‐66‐NH2 can transfer electrons to Pt nanoparticles and Co sites, which can efficiently catalyze the critical elementary steps (i.e. CO2‐to‐*HCOO conversion), thus suppressing the RWGS pathway to achieve a high CH3OH selectivity. Catalytic aqueous phase reforming of methanol is a promising process for the sustainable hydrogen production. The search for highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst is a topic of interest. Herein, we report oxygen vacancies enriched MgAl−LDHs supported plasmonic Ru nanoparticles catalyst exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance for efficient hydrogen production at 150 ºC under light irradiation. Characterizations demonstrate abundant oxygen vacancies are introduced into MgAl−LDHs via "memory effect". The local electron transfer from oxygen vacancies of the MgAl−LDHs to the Ru nanoparticles leading the formation of electron-rich Ru species, which promote the dehydrogenation of methanol under light irradiation. In situ DRIFTS demonstrated a redox mechanism of water-gas shift reaction due to the existence of oxygen vacancies, which resulted a faster hydrogen production rate. This work displays a facile strategy for synthesis of oxygen vacancies rich LDH supported metal nanoparticles catalysts and deep understanding into the pathway and mechanism toward the effective hydrogen production. Currently, tire wear particles (TWPs), a typical type of black microplastics (MPs), are frequently overlooked as the major source of MPs in aquatic environments. TWPs are widely distributed and exhibit complex environmental behaviors. However, how natural forces affect the aging and release behavior of TWPs at the nano(micro)scale remains inadequately explored. This study systematically investigated the aging behavior and mechanism of TWPs under the action of simulated natural light and high-temperature in both dry and wet environments, as well as the effect of aging treatment on the released leachate. The findings demonstrated that aging treatment significantly altered the physicochemical properties of TWPs, including chain scission and surface oxidation, and facilitated the release of heavy metals and organic additives in the meantime. In particular, the leaching concentration of Zn exhibited a positive linear relationship with exposure time. In the thermal-aging process, the oxidation of TWPs was primarily caused by superoxide anion (O 2 •−). During the photo-aging exposure, TWPs exhibited heightened electron-donating capacity, resulting in the formation of more O 2 •− and singlet oxygen (1O 2) to attack TWPs. Moreover, the analysis of leachate produced under light and high-temperature conditions suggested that heavy metals exerted low ecological risks in water. Nonetheless, the photo-aging process enhanced the toxicity of released leachate to L929 cells, which could be attributed to highly toxic additive transformation products (such as HMMM-411 and 6PPD-Q) and more heavy metals. Over the past decades, water pollution caused by organic dyes has attracted extensive attention. The development of efficient, environmental friendly photocatalysts is a promising route for wastewater purification. Herein, a novel wild jujube shell derived biochar/g-C 3 N 4 (BC/CN) composite has been prepared via a one-step calcination route. Although the specific surface area (9.37 m2/g) and pore size (14.57) of the BC/CN composite are smaller than those of g-C 3 N 4 , it exhibits enhanced photocatalytic activity. Especially, the 0.25-BC/CN composite (sour jujube shell powder/melamine ratio = 0.25) displays excellent photocatalytic activity, and can degrade ∼97.1 % of RhB under 40 min light irradiation, which is ∼46.51 times to that of pure g-C 3 N 4. The actives species of h+, ·OH, ·O 2 − and 1O 2 active species play the important roles in the photocatalytic system of the BC/CN composite. The results mechanistic study demonstrates that the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the BC/CN composite can be mainly attributed to the improved light absorption and charge separation efficiency of the catalyst. This work provides a simple method for preparing of novel highly efficient g–C 3 N 4 –based photocatalyts for wastewater purification, and provides a new idea for the recycling, and high-value utilization of the organic solid waste from traditional Chinese medicine. Coronaviruses (CoVs) belong to the group of enveloped positive-sense single-strand RNA viruses and are causative agents of respiratory, gastro-intestinal, and central nervous systems diseases in many host species, i.e., birds, mammals, and humans. Beta-CoVs revealed a great potential to cross the barrier between species by causing three epidemics/pandemics among humans in the 21st century. Considering the urgent need for powerful antiviral agents for decontamination, prevention, and treatment of BCoV infections, we turned our attention to the possibility of photodynamic inactivation with photosensitizers in combination with light irradiation. First, we determined the in vitro cytotoxicity of MB and TBO on the Madin–Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cell line with ISO10993-5/Annex C. Thereafter, BCoV was propagated in MDBK cells, and the virus titer was measured with digital droplet PCR, TCID50 assay and plaque assay. The antiviral activity of non-toxic concentrations of TBO was estimated using the direct inactivation approach. All effects were calculated in MAPLE 15® mathematical software by developing programs for non-linear modeling and response surface analysis. The median inhibitory concentration (IC50) of TBO after 72 h of incubation in MDBK cells was 0.85 µM. The antiviral activity of TBO after the direct inactivation of BCoV (MOI = 1) was significantly stronger than that of MB. The median effective concentration (EC50) of TBO was 0.005 µM. The cytopathic effect decreased in a concentration-dependent manner, from 0.0025 to 0.01 µM, and disappeared fully at concentrations between 0.02 and 0.3 µM of TBO. The number of virus particles also decreased, depending on the concentration applied, as proven by ddPCR analysis. In conclusion, TBO exhibits significant potential for direct inactivation of BCoV in vitro, with a very high selectivity index, and should be subjected to further investigation, aiming at its application in veterinary and/or human medical practice.

Potatoes are the fourth major food crop in the world. Higher levels of glycoside alkaloids (GAs) lead to detrimental effects on the edibility and processing qualities. GAs are largely influenced by light; however, the mechanisms of this regulation by light are not well understood. By analyzing the bioinformatics of the phytochrome genes (PHYs) in potatoes, its expression level, the content of GAs and the correlation between them under different lights, this study aims to reveal the specific mechanism of light-regulated GAs accumulation and provide a theoretical basis for improved potato processing. Results based on high-performance liquid chromatography and imaging mass microscopy showed that red light induced a significant increase in α-chaconine and α-solanine accumulation compared to white light, but there was almost no accumulation in the dark within 12 days. Meanwhile, a bioinformatic analysis of PHY gene family members was performed, and the results showed that the five StPHYs were distributed on chromosomes 1, 2, 5, 7 and 10, with amino acid counts ranging from 704 to 1130. StPHYs genes have abundant light-responsive elements. Also, the expression patterns of StPHYs were dramatically induced by red light. Additionally, a correlation analysis showed that the GAs accumulation was significantly correlated with StPHYs expression. This research is useful for comprehending the metabolism of GAs regulated by light and monitoring food safety in potatoes.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) refers to the beneficial effect produced from low-energy light irradiation on target cells or tissues. Increasing evidence in the literature suggests that PBM plays a positive role in the treatment of retinal diseases. However, there is great variation in the light sources and illumination parameters used in different studies, resulting in significantly different conclusions regarding PBM's therapeutic effects. In addition, the mechanism by which PBM improves retinal function has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we conducted a narrative review of the published literature on PBM for treating retinal diseases and summarized the key illumination parameters used in PBM. Furthermore, we explored the potential molecular mechanisms of PBM at the retinal cellular level with the goal of providing evidence for the improved utilization of PBM in the treatment of retinal diseases. Light influences circadian rhythms, including that of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol, in turn, has been observed to promote expression of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. It is thus of interest whether the cytokine IL-10 is also influenced by light, perhaps in accord with the diurnal variations in cortisol. Hence, this highly standardized preliminary sleep laboratory study in healthy adult men investigated a potential influence of different light exposure on IL-10 and cortisol concentrations in blood. In a between-subject design, N  = 42 participants were exposed to either bright, dim, blue or red light after wake-up. Two mixed-model analyses with the factors of light condition and time (across eight IL-10 and cortisol sampling points) were conducted. Additionally, area under the curve measurements (AUCg and AUCi) were calculated for both cortisol and IL-10. Across all conditions, IL-10 and cortisol concentrations significantly changed over time. However, none of the light conditions exerted a greater influence on IL-10 or cortisol levels than others. For cortisol, there was greater total output (AUCg) in the blue-light condition in particular. While irradiation with red LED light has been reported to modulate sperm function in different mammalian species, the mechanisms underlying their response are poorly understood. This work sought to provide new insights into whether this effect relies on a direct action upon mitochondrial electron chain and/or on PKC-linked mechanisms such as those related to opsins. For this purpose, pig semen was light-stimulated for 1, 5 or 10 min in the presence/absence of antimycin A, an inhibitor of the mitochondrial electron chain, or PKC 20–28® (PKCi), a PKC inhibitor. Antimycin A completely blocked the effects of light at all the performed irradiation patterns. This effect was linked to a complete immobility of sperm, which was accompanied with a significant (p < 0.05) drop in several markers of mitochondrial activity, such as JC-1 staining and O2 consumption rate. Antimycin A, however, did not affect intracellular ATP levels, intramitochondrial calcium, total ROS, superoxides or cytochrome C oxidase (CCO) activity. In the case of PKCi, it did also counteract the effects of light on motility, O2 consumption rate and CCO activity, but not to the same extent than that observed for antimycin A. Finally, the effects observed when sperm were co-incubated with antimycin A and PKCi were similar to those observed with antimycin A alone. In conclusion, red LED light acts on sperm function via a direct effect on mitochondrial electron chain. Additionally, light-activated PKC pathways have a supplementary effect to that observed in the electron chain, thereby modulating sperm parameters such as motility and CCO activity.

The present study reports on the development and testing of novel bleaching agents containing co-doped metaloxide nanoparticles (NP; 0%, 5%, 10% v/w) and hydrogen peroxide (HP, 0%, 6%, 15%, and 35%). Bovine blocks (n = 200, A = 36 mm2) were obtained and randomly distributed into experimental groups (n = 10/group). NPs were incorporated into gels before bleaching (3 sessions, 7 days apart, 30 min/session, irradiated with violet light-LT). Color changes (ΔE00, ΔWID), mineral content (CO32−, PO43−), and topography were assessed (spectrophotometer, ATR-FTIR, and AFM) before and after bleaching procedures (14 days). Metabolic status and three-dimensional components of non-disrupted Streptococcus mutans biofilms were investigated using a multimode reader and confocal microscopy. The results indicate that ΔE00 and ΔWID significantly increased with NPs' concentrations and LT. The enamel's mineral ratio was adversely impacted by HP, but alterations were less pronounced when using NP-containing gels. The enamel's topography was not damaged by the bleaching protocols tested. The bioluminescence results show that bleaching protocols do not render latent antibacterial properties to enamel, and the confocal microscopy results demonstrate that the 3-dimensional distribution of the components was affected by the protocols. The proposed nanotechnology improved the bleaching efficacy of experimental materials independent of hydrogen peroxide or irradiation and did not adversely impact the enamel's surface properties or its chemical content. Spreading serves as a pivotal process in the flavor development of green tea. In this study, the effects of spreading under five light irradiation on the volatile and non-volatile metabolites of green tea were comprehensively investigated using intelligent sensory technologies integrated with targeted and non-targeted metabolomics analyses. The incorporation of yellow light irradiation into spreading process significantly improved the overall quality of green tea. A total of 71 volatile and 112 non-volatile metabolites were identified by GC–MS/MS and UHPLC-Q-Exactive/MS, respectively. Among them, 20 key odorants with OAVs exceeding 1 were screened out. Moreover, phenylethyl alcohol, β -damascenone, β -ionone, (E, Z)-2,6-nonadienal, linalool, and phenylacetaldehyde with higher OAVs were pivotal contributors to the aroma quality under different light irradiation. Additionally, 13 non-volatile metabolites with VIP > 1.2 were recognized as key differential metabolites under different light irradiation. The results provide technical support and theoretical guidance for enhancing the processing technology of green tea. It has been observed that suitable light irradiation can improve the phytoremediation efficiency of various plants by enhancing their growth rate and metal uptake capacity. However, the mechanisms underlying the effects of light irradiation on metal mobilization and translocation in soils have rarely been reported. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the variation in dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the rhizosphere of Noccaea caerulescens (formerly Thlaspi caerulescens J. & C. Presl) when irradiated with different combinations of red (0, 25, 50, 90, and 100% red) and blue light. N. caerulescens was induced to secrete significantly more DOM, relative to the control, into its rhizosphere after being irradiated with pure red light and other red light combinations; this increased the bioavailability of soil Cd. Moreover, the concentrations and proportions of the hydrophilic DOM fractions, particularly hydrophilic acid, which exhibited a high affinity for Cd, increased with increasing ratios of the red light. Furthermore, DOM secreted because of the light irradiation treatments exhibited a significantly higher Cd extraction ability compared with that of the untreated control; this consequently increased the Cd uptake capacity of N. caerulescens. The results demonstrated that the secretion of more DOM, particularly hydrophilic acid, plays a pivotal role in improving the phytoremediation efficiency of N. caerulescens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Light is essential for plants and plays a vital role in their growth and development. Light irradiation affects the physiological characteristics and synthesis of secondary metabolites in plants. As a semi-shade perennial plant, Panax ginseng C.A. Mey. is sensitive to changes in the light environment. Different light irradiations significantly affect the secondary metabolic processes of P. ginseng. However, few studies have investigated the changes in ginsenoside content in P. ginseng under different light irradiation conditions. In this study, 3-year-old P. ginseng was cultured under white (CK) light, blue (B) light, red (R) light, green (G) light, and natural light (NL) to explore the effects of light irradiation on the physiological characteristics and ginsenoside secondary metabolism of P. ginseng. The B and CK treatments significantly increased the photosynthetic level in P. ginseng leaves. The total saponin content under blue and red light treatments increased by 28.81% and 21.64%, respectively, compared with the CK treatment. Blue and red light improved the transcription levels of ginsenoside biosynthetic pathway genes. Blue light upregulated the expression of HMGR, SS, SE, DS, CYP716A52, and CYP716A47, and the expression of HMGR, SS, SE, DS, and CYP716A47 under red light treatment was significantly upregulated in P. ginseng roots. Principal component and correlation analyses revealed that the physiological and ecological processes of P. ginseng exhibited different responses to light irradiation. The total saponin content in the roots was positively correlated with the content of protopanaxatriol -type ginsenosides and water use efficiency in leaves. Our study indicates that light conditions can be improved by blue and red light or by blue and red film covering to facilitate the accumulation of saponin during the ecological cultivation of P. ginseng.

Light irradiation plays an important role in the growth of microalgae and their nutrient composition. To elucidate the effect of different LED lights (red, orange, green, blue, purple, simulated sunlight, and white) on the main nutritional compositions of Isochrysis zhanjiangensis, the growth, fatty acid composition, soluble carbohydrate, and soluble protein contents were studied. The results show that I. zhanjiangensis grew the fastest under blue light (p = 0.044). In terms of fatty acid composition, the percentage of myristic acid (C14:0) decreased significantly (p = 0.021) under blue light and simulated sunlight, but the percentages of palmitic acid (C16:0) (p = 0.032) and stearic acid (C18:0) (p = 0.037) significantly increased. The percentage of docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3) increased under orange light (p = 0.021), and the percentage of total unsaturated fatty acids increased under blue light (p = 0.008). The protein content significantly increased under simulated sunlight (p = 0.025), while the carbohydrate content did not vary much (p > 0.05) under different lights. These findings provide useful guidance for optimizing the cultivation conditions of I. zhanjiangensis to improve its nutritional value and yield.
