BACKGROUND: Sclerotinia spp. are generalist fungal pathogens, infecting over 700 plant hosts worldwide, including major crops. While host resistance is the most sustainable and cost-effective method for disease management, complete resistance to Sclerotinia diseases is rare. We recently identified soft basal stem as a potential susceptibility factor to Sclerotinia minor infection in lettuce (Lactuca sativa) under greenhouse conditions. RESULTS: Analysis of stem and root cell wall composition in five L. sativa and one L. serriola accessions with varying growth habits and S. minor resistance levels revealed strong association between hemicellulose constituents, lignin polymers, disease phenotypes, and basal stem mechanical strength. Accessions resistant to basal stem degradation consistently exhibited higher levels of syringyl, guaiacyl, and xylose, but lower levels of fucose in stems. These findings suggest that stem cell wall polymers recalcitrant to breakdown by lignocellulolytic enzymes may contribute to stem strength-mediated resistance against S. minor. CONCLUSIONS: The lignin content, particularly guaiacyl and syringyl, along with xylose could potentially serve as biomarkers for identifying more resistant lettuce accessions and breeding lines. Basal stem degradation by S. minor was influenced by localized microenvironment conditions around the stem base of the plants.

Modification of lignin in feedstocks via genetic engineering aims to reduce biomass recalcitrance to facilitate efficient conversion processes. These improvements can be achieved by expressing exogenous enzymes that interfere with native biosynthetic pathways responsible for the production of the lignin precursors. In-planta expression of a 3-dehydroshikimate dehydratase (QsuB) in poplar trees reduced lignin content and altered their monomer composition, which enabled higher yields of sugars after cell wall polysaccharide hydrolysis. Understanding how plants respond to such genetic modifications at the transcriptional and metabolic levels is needed to facilitate further improvement and field deployment. In this work, we amassed fundamental knowledge on lignin-modified QsuB poplar using RNA-seq and metabolomics. The data clearly demonstrate that changes in gene expression and metabolite abundance can occur in a strict spatiotemporal fashion, revealing tissue-specific responses in the xylem, phloem, or periderm. In the poplar line that exhibits the strongest reduction in lignin, we found that 3% of the transcripts had altered expression levels and ~19% of the detected metabolites had differential abundance in the xylem from older stems. Changes affect predominantly the shikimate and phenylpropanoid pathways as wells as secondary cell wall metabolism, and result in significant accumulation of hydroxybenzoates derived from protocatechuate and salicylate.

Many insects have evolved the ability to manipulate plant growth to generate extraordinary structures called galls, in which insect larva can develop while being sheltered and feeding on the plant. In particular, cynipid (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) wasps have evolved to form morphologically complex galls and generate an astonishing array of gall shapes, colors, and sizes. However, the biochemical basis underlying these remarkable cellular and developmental transformations remains poorly understood. A key determinant in plant cellular development is cell wall deposition that dictates the physical form and physiological function of newly developing cells, tissues, and organs. However, it is unclear to what degree cell walls are restructured to initiate and support the formation of new gall tissue. Here, we characterize the molecular alterations underlying gall development using a combination of metabolomic, histological, and biochemical techniques to elucidate how valley oak (Quercus lobata) leaf cells are reprogrammed to form galls. Strikingly, gall development involves an exceptionally coordinated spatial deposition of lignin and xylan to form de novo gall vasculature. Our results highlight how cynipid wasps can radically change the metabolite profile and restructure the cell wall to enable the formation of galls, providing insights into the mechanism of gall induction and the extent to which plants can be entirely reprogrammed to form unique structures and organs.

Laccases from white-rot fungi catalyze lignin depolymerization, a critical first step to upgrading lignin to valuable biodiesel fuels and chemicals. In this study, a wildtype laccase from the basidiomycete Fomitiporia mediterranea (Fom_lac) and a variant engineered to have a carbohydrate-binding module (Fom_CBM) were studied for their ability to catalyze cleavage of β-O-4 ether and C-C bonds in phenolic and non-phenolic lignin dimers using a nanostructure-initiator mass spectrometry-based assay. Fom_lac and Fom_CBM catalyze β-O-4 ether and C-C bond breaking, with higher activity under acidic conditions (pH < 6). The potential of Fom_lac and Fom_CBM to enhance saccharification yields from untreated and ionic liquid pretreated pine was also investigated. Adding Fom_CBM to mixtures of cellulases and hemicellulases improved sugar yields by 140% on untreated pine and 32% on cholinium lysinate pretreated pine when compared to the inclusion of Fom_lac to the same mixtures. Adding either Fom_lac or Fom_CBM to mixtures of cellulases and hemicellulases effectively accelerates enzymatic hydrolysis, demonstrating its potential applications for lignocellulose valorization. We postulate that additional increases in sugar yields for the Fom_CBM enzyme mixtures were due to Fom_CBM being brought more proximal to lignin through binding to either cellulose or lignin itself.

Summary The first step in carbon (C) turnover, where senesced plant biomass is converted through various pathways into compounds that are released to the atmosphere or incorporated into the soil, is termed litter decomposition. This review is focused on recent advances of how solar radiation can affect this important process in terrestrial ecosystems. We explore the photochemical degradation of plant litter and its consequences for biotic decomposition and C cycling. The ubiquitous presence of lignin in plant tissues poses an important challenge for enzymatic litter decomposition due to its biological recalcitrance, creating a substantial bottleneck for decomposer organisms. The recognition that lignin is also photolabile and can be rapidly altered by natural doses of sunlight to increase access to cell wall carbohydrates and even bolster the activity of cell wall degrading enzymes highlights a novel role for lignin in modulating rates of litter decomposition. Lignin represents a key functional connector between photochemistry and biochemistry with important consequences for our understanding of how sunlight exposure may affect litter decomposition in a wide range of terrestrial ecosystems. A mechanistic understanding of how sunlight controls litter decomposition and C turnover can help inform management and other decisions related to mitigating human impact on the planet. The valorization of native lignin to functionalized aromatic compounds under visible light is appealing yet challenging. In this communication, colloidal mercaptoalkanoic acid capped ultrathin ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) microbelts was successfully fabricated, which was used as a superior catalyst for depolymerization of native lignin in birch woodmeal under visible light, with an optimum yield of 28.8 wt % to functionalized aromatic monomers achieved in 8 h. The capped mercaptoalkanoic acid not only enables a solvent modulated reversible interchange of ZIS between the colloidal state for efficient reaction and the aggregated state for facile separation, but also serves as a precursor for light initiated generation of reactive thiyl radical for highly selective cleavage of β‐O‐4 bond in native lignin. This work provides a green and efficient strategy for the depolymerization of native lignin to functionalized aromatic monomers under mild conditions, which involves a new mechanism for the cleavage of β‐O‐4 bonds in native lignin. The capability of cleavage of β‐O‐4 bonds in native lignin by photogenerated thiyl radicals also demonstrates the great potential of using photogenerated thiyl radicals in organics transformations. The enhancement of flame resistance and mechanical strength is critical for the utilization of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composites. In this study, the efficient synergistic flame‐retardant system, incorporating dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and expandable graphite (EG), with the addition of refined alkali lignin (A‐lignin) were aimed to superior fire resistance and mechanical integrity for RPUF. Furthermore, the flame retardancy and charring ability of obtained RPUF were obviously enhanced. Notably, an RPUF mixture containing A‐lignin, DMMP, and EG demonstrated substantial charring at elevated temperatures, improved limiting oxygen index, and met the UL‐94 V‐0 rating. Cone calorimeter test indicated that this formulation produces less heat and smoke than pure RPUF. The flame‐retardant efficacy of obtained RPUF was attributed to the formation of a protective char layer coupled with the free radical neutralization properties of DMMP, collectively enhancing the flame retardancy obtained RPUF. Additionally, this RPUF variant showed significant advancements in both mechanical and thermal performance. Background: Dissection of complex plant cell wall structures demands a sensitive and quantitative method. FTIR is used regularly as a screening method to identify specific linkages in cell walls. However, quantification and assigning spectral bands to particular cell wall components is still a major challenge, specifically in crop species. In this study, we addressed these challenges using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy as it is a high throughput, cost-effective and non-destructive approach to understand the plant cell wall composition. This method was validated by analysing different varieties of mungbean which is one of the most important legume crops grown widely in Asia. Results: Using standards and extraction of a specific component of cell wall components, we assigned 1050–1060 cm−1 and 1390–1420 cm−1 wavenumbers that can be widely used to quantify cellulose and lignin, respectively, in Arabidopsis, Populus, rice and mungbean. Also, using KBr as a diluent, we established a method that can relatively quantify the cellulose and lignin composition among different tissue types of the above species. We further used this method to quantify cellulose and lignin in field-grown mungbean genotypes. The ATR-FTIR-based study revealed the cellulose content variation ranges from 27.9% to 52.3%, and the lignin content variation ranges from 13.7% to 31.6% in mungbean genotypes. Conclusion: Multivariate analysis of FT-IR data revealed differences in total cell wall (600–2000 cm−1), cellulose (1000–1100 cm−1) and lignin (1390–1420 cm−1) among leaf and stem of four plant species. Overall, our data suggested that ATR-FTIR can be used for the relative quantification of lignin and cellulose in different plant species. Summary Lignin, a complex heterogenous polymer present in virtually all plant cell walls, plays a critical role in protecting plants from various stresses. However, little is known about how lignin modifications in sorghum will impact plant defense against sugarcane aphids (SCA), a key pest of sorghum. We utilized the sorghum brown midrib (bmr) mutants, which are impaired in monolignol synthesis, to understand sorghum defense mechanisms against SCA. We found that loss of Bmr12 function and overexpression (OE) of Bmr12 provided enhanced resistance and susceptibility to SCA, respectively, as compared with wild‐type (WT; RTx430) plants. Monitoring of the aphid feeding behavior indicated that SCA spent more time in reaching the first sieve element phase on bmr12 plants compared with RTx430 and Bmr12‐OE plants. A combination of transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that bmr12 plants displayed altered auxin metabolism upon SCA infestation and specifically, elevated levels of auxin conjugate indole‐3‐acetic acid–aspartic acid (IAA–Asp) were observed in bmr12 plants compared with RTx430 and Bmr12‐OE plants. Furthermore, exogenous application of IAA–Asp restored resistance in Bmr12‐OE plants, and artificial diet aphid feeding trial bioassays revealed that IAA–Asp is associated with enhanced resistance to SCA. Introduction: As an essential part of plant cell walls, lignin provides mechanical support for plant growth, enhances water transport, and helps to defend against pathogens. As the most abundant natural aromatic-based renewable resource on earth, its biosynthesis has always been a research focus, and it is still currently under study. Methods: In this study, the p-coumaryl alcohol analog (HALK) and the coniferyl alcohol analog (GALK) containing an alkyne group at the ortho position were synthesized and applied to lignification in vivo and in vitro. The incorporation of these novel lignin monomers was observed via fluorescence imaging. Results and Discussion: It was found that the two monolignol analogs could be incorporated in dehydrogenated polymers (DHPs) in vitro and in flax cell walls in vivo. The results showed that as the cultivation time and precursor concentration varied, the deposition of H and G-type lignin exhibited differences in deposition mode. At the subcellular scale, the deposited lignin first appears in the cell corner and the middle lamella, and then gradually appears on the cell walls. Furthermore, lignin was also found in bast fiber. Three delignification treatments of corncob residues (CCR), including NaOH, formic acid, and sulfite treatments, were compared at the respective optimized condition and in light of chemical compositions, sugar recovery, and ethanol production. NaOH and sulfite treatment can remove lignin in the CCR efficiently. Though NaOH treatment showed a superior ability of delignification, its solid cellulose recovery is lower than that of sulfite treatment. The sulfite treatment has the highest selectivity between delignification and cellulose conservation. The formic acid-treated CCR still had high lignin contents because formic acid also accelerated the solvation of cellulose. In fed-batch simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) with 25% substrate loading, the highest 77.1 ± 2.33 g/L ethanol was from NaOH-treated CCR, corresponding to a CCR-to-ethanol yield of 0.208 ± 0.0021 g/g. However, the sulfite pretreated CCR also produced 68.2 ± 2.22 g/L ethanol, with a higher CCR-to-ethanol yield of 0.219 ± 0.0012 g/g. The high substrate dosage is beneficial to ethanol concentration but not beneficial to CCR-to-ethanol yield. We developed a series of heteropolyacid-modified lignin-MOF derived bimetallic catalyst for the efficient in situ hydrogenation/hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using isopropanol as hydrogen-donating solvent. Biomass-derived lignin was regarded as an important support and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was a vital platform chemical derived from cellulose. Herein, a series of lignin-MOF hybrid catalysts were prepared and modified with different heteropolyacids (HPAs), which were then successfully introduced into the selective conversion of HMF to 5-hydroxymethylfurfuryl alcohol (MFA). The effect of different HPA, calcination temperature, etc. were all studied, and all catalysts were well characterized. It was confirmed that silicotungstic acid modified catalyst (Ni 3 Co-MOF-LS@HSiW) exhibited the best catalytic performance, while the highest conversion of HMF was up to 100%, with the best MFA yield of 86.5%. Lignin is a nature's wonder most abundant aromatic biopolymer and a promising precursor for a wide range of sustainable carbon materials (CMs). However, the effects of lignin structural heterogeneity on the properties and performance of lignin-based CMs are still poorly understood. In this paper, we address the influence of the lignin structural heterogeneity on the properties of lignin-based activated carbons (ACs). Taking two structurally different kraft (KL) and hydrolysis (HL) lignins, we show that they result into ACs with different properties and electrochemical performance in supercapacitor application. In similar carbonization and activation conditions, ACs from HL showed higher specific capacitances than ACs from KL. The difference between the two groups of ACs could not be solely attributed to the difference in their specific surface areas. They were rather found to result from different particle morphologies, pore size distributions, pore wall nanostructures, and surface chemistries, as revealed by multivariate data analyses. Moreover, we observed that KL and HL had different thermophysical behaviors and reactivities during the thermal treatment, which would have influenced the porosity development and surface oxygenation levels and consequently the electrochemical performance of the derived ACs. This work also shows that it is possible to engineer ACs from HL with electrochemical performance close to the commercial YP-50F Kuraray AC, which implies that less pure, carbohydrate-containing lignins are no less advantaged compared to purer KL to produce high-performance ACs for supercapacitor application. The ever-growing energy demand and environmental issues have stimulated the development of sustainable energy technologies. Herein, an efficient and environmentally friendly electrochemical transformation technology was proposed to prepare highly graphitized carbon materials from an abundant natural resource - lignin (LG). The preparation process mainly includes pyrolytic carbonization of raw LG material and electrochemical conversion of amorphous carbon precursor. Interestingly, with the assistance of Co catalyst, the graphitization degree of the products was significantly improved, in which the mechanism was the removal of heteroatoms in LG and the rearrangement of carbon atoms into graphite lattice. Furthermore, tunable microstructures (nanoflakes) under catalytic effects could also be observed by controlling the electrolytic parameters. Compared with the products CN1 (without catalyst) and CN5 (with 10% catalyst), the specific surface area are 158.957 and 202.246 m2 g1, respectively. When used as the electrode material for lithium-ion batteries, CN5 delivered a competitive specific capacity of -350 mAh g1 (0.5 C) compared with commercial graphite. The strategy proposed in this work provides an effective way to extract value-added graphite materials from lignin and can be extended to the graphitization conversion of any other amorphous carbon precursor materials. Purpose: Herein, the extraction of lignin from rubber tree residues (Hevea brasiliensis Müll. Arg), particularly from the seed shell, is reported with the aim of providing added value to this plantation. Methods: The protocol employed consisted of an organosolv extraction using formic or acetic acids and p-TsOH as catalyst assisted by ultrasound, avoiding the use of high temperatures and mineral acids. Results: 22% yield of lignin was obtained from the dried rubber seed shell using the formic acid/p-TsOH combination in comparison with 13% yield obtained with acetic acid/p-TsOH. The extracted lignin was oxidized isolating typical fragments derived from syringyl, guaiacyl and p-hydroxyphenyl units. The lignin was characterized by IR, UV, NMR, TGA and DSC. Moreover, total phenol content and antioxidant activity were also evaluated. Conclusion: The results exhibited the presence of typical lignin aromatic composition. The lignin obtained by the seed shell could be effectively employed in numerous future applications and the method could be considered as a low-cost acid catalysed process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: CINNAMYL ALCOHOL DEHYDROGENASE (CAD) catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of cinnamaldehydes into cinnamyl alcohols and is a key enzyme found at the final step of the monolignol pathway. Cinnamyl alcohols and their conjugates are subsequently polymerized in the secondary cell wall to form lignin. CAD genes are typically encoded by multi-gene families and thus traditionally organized into general classifications of functional relevance. Results: In silico analysis of the hexaploid Triticum aestivum genome revealed 47 high confidence TaCAD copies, of which three were determined to be the most significant isoforms (class I) considered bone fide CADs. Class I CADs were expressed throughout development both in RNAseq data sets as well as via qRT-PCR analysis. Of the 37 class II TaCADs identified, two groups were observed to be significantly co-expressed with class I TaCADs in developing tissue and under chitin elicitation in RNAseq data sets. These co-expressed class II TaCADs were also found to be phylogenetically unrelated to a separate clade of class II TaCADs previously reported to be an influential resistance factor to pathogenic fungal infection. Lastly, two groups were phylogenetically identified as class III TaCADs, which possess distinct conserved gene structures. However, the lack of data supporting their catalytic activity for cinnamaldehydes and their bereft transcriptional presence in lignifying tissues challenges their designation and function as CADs. Conclusions: Taken together, our comprehensive transcriptomic analyses suggest that TaCAD genes contribute to overlapping but nonredundant functions during T. aestivum growth and development across a wide variety of agroecosystems and provide tolerance to various stressors. In this study, a lignin-based aerogel (LA) was prepared through acid precipitation of BPBL, followed by sol–gel method and freeze-drying. Additionally, a one-step activation-carbonization method was used to acquire nitrogen-doped lignin-based activated carbon aerogel (NLACA). The adsorption and catalytic degradation performance for malachite green (MG) were examined. The specific surface area of NLACA after N-doping was 2644.5 m2/g. The adsorption capacity for MG was increased to 3433 mg/g with the presence of nitrogenous functional groups on surface of NLACA compared without N-doping. Meanwhile, non-radical singlet oxygen is the primary active substance and degradation efficiency arrives at 91.8% after the catalytic degradation within 20 min and it has good stability and reuse. Three possible degradation pathways during degradation were analyzed by LC–MS technique. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic data demonstrated conformity with both the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The primary mechanisms of the adsorption for MG dyes on NLACA include hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions, attraction of electrostatic and pore filling. Hence, NLACA derived from BPBL acts as a cost-effective and high-performance adsorbent and catalyst for removal of MG in dye wastewater. This concept introduces an innovative approach of "treatment of waste with waste" for developing a low-consumption, high-efficiency dye wastewater treatment and provides significant reference to treatment dye wastewater. Over the past decade, the production of biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass has steadily increased to offset the use of fuels from petroleum. To make biofuels cost-competitive, however, it is necessary to add value to the "ligno-" components (up to 30% by mass) of the biomass. The properties of lignin, in terms of molecular weight (MW), chemical functionality, and mineral impurities often vary from biomass source and biorefinery process, resulting in a challenging precursor for product development. Activated carbon (AC) is a feasible target for the lignin-rich byproduct streams because it can be made from nearly any biomass, and it has a market capacity large enough to use much of the lignin generated from the biorefineries. However, it is not known how the variability in the lignin affects the key properties of AC, because, until now, they could not be well controlled. In this work, various fractions of ultraclean (<0.6% ash) lignin are created with refined MW distributions using Aqueous Lignin Purification using Hot Agents (ALPHA) and used as precursors for AC. AC is synthesized via zinc chloride activation and characterized for pore structure and adsorption capacity. We show that AC surface area and the adsorption capacity increase when using lignin with increasing MW, and, furthermore, that reducing the mineral content of lignin can significantly enhance the AC properties. The surface area of the AC from the highest MW lignin can reach ~1830 m2/g (absorption capacity). Furthermore, single step activation carbonization using zinc chloride allows for minimal carbon burn off (<30%), capturing most of the lignin carbon compared to traditional burn off methods in biorefineries for heat generation. Polyurethanes (PU) have drawn great attention due to their excellent mechanical properties and self-healing and recyclable abilities. Lignin is a natural and renewable raw material in nature, composed of a large number of hydroxyl groups, and has a great potential to replace petroleum polyols in PU synthesis. This review summarizes the recent advances in modification methods such as the liquefaction, alkylation, and demethylation of lignin, and a systematic analysis of how to improve the reactivity and monomer substitution of lignin during polyurethane synthesis for the green manufacturing of high-performance polyurethanes was conducted. Polyurethane can be used in the form of films, foams, and elastomers instead of conventional materials as a dielectric or substrate material to improve the reliability and durability of flexible sensors; this review summarizes the green synthesis of polyurethanes and their applications in flexible electronics, which are expected to provide inspiration for the wearable electronics sector. The graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4) photocatalysis has emerged as a clean method for cleaving lignin-linked bonds due to its mild and sunlight-driven reaction conditions. The fast electron–hole pair complex of g-C 3 N 4 constrains its degradation efficiency, making the heterojunction construction a popular solution. The conventional methods of preparing g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions by physical mixing destroy π-conjugations in g-C 3 N 4 , reducing the adsorption of lignin containing benzene rings. In this study, a novel indium oxide (In 2 O 3) quantum dot–g-C 3 N 4 0D/2D heterojunction was prepared through the high-temperature oxidation of pre-prepared indium-doped g-C 3 N 4. The introduction of In 2 O 3 at the quantum dot level minimizes the interference with lignin adsorption capacity. The strong combination of the two (In 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4) increases the intersection interface area, promoting the S-scheme transfer route of the photogenerated electrons. Consequently, this enhances the photoelectric conversion efficiency and carrier lifetime of the heterojunction, and inhibits the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs in g-C 3 N 4. The proposed heterojunction was 3 times more efficient than g-C 3 N 4 alone for selective cleavage of lignin β–O–4 bonds after 2 h of sunlight irradiation. Combined with inhibitor experiments and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, this paper defines the reactive oxides and proposes a cleavage pathway for the lignin β–O–4 bonds in In 2 O 3 –g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction system. Environmentally friendly materials have attracted much more attention in agricultural plastic film, instead of traditional petroleum-based materials. Among them, some challenges also remain in the traditional polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in the field of film, such as low mechanical strength, water resistance, and UV isolation. The film performance and properties can be improved for the better use value of biomass resources. In this study, the raw materials were selected as PVA, Lignin, and WBPU (waterborne polyurethane). Among them, the WBPU was used as the filler to liquefy the lignin, in order to prepare the lignin-liquefied substance L(D). The lignin-based WBPU/PVA blend film was successfully prepared by solution pouring. The single-factor experiment was carried out to compare the addition amount of L(D) and WBPU. A systematic investigation was then implemented to explore the effects of the types and the content of additives on the properties of the blend film, such as tensile strength, elongation at break, light transmittance, opacity, thickness, water absorption, and water solubility. FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and SEM (scanning electron microscopy) were used to analyze the microstructure and chemical composition of the films. The transmittance and absorbance of the films were identified by UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The size and shape of the grain were characterized by XRD (phase analysis of X-ray diffraction). The mechanical properties of the film were evaluated by a universal material testing machine. The thickness of the film was measured to calculate the opacity using a thickness-measuring instrument. The results show that both L(D) and WBPU were fully mixed with the PVA, where the addition of L(D) improved the tensile strength and elongation at the break of the film. The composite film with 15%L(D) shared the best mechanical properties, while the addition of WBPU only exhibited low mechanical properties. However, the addition enhanced the UV resistance of the film. Furthermore, 8:2L(D)/WBPU/PVA blend film behaved with a transmittance of 1.57% at the UV region of 400mm, indicating a stronger performance to prevent the ultraviolet light, compared with the pure PVA film in the transmittance of 81.44% under the UV region. The water absorption and solubility of the blended film with L(D) were improved, compared with the pure PVA film. Specifically, the water absorption was reduced from 532% to 362%, and the water solubility was also reduced from 42% to 35%, indicating better waterproof. The water absorption and water solubility of the blended film were further improved after adding WBPU. The water absorption of 5:5L(D)/WBPU/PVA blend film was even reduced to 170% with the increase of WBPU content, and the water solubility was also reduced to 18%. Therefore, the water resistance and UV resistance of the blended film can be further improved under different L(D)/WBPU mass ratios. The blended film can be prepared with a high application potential in the plastic film. The findings can provide a strong reference in the food and pharmaceutical packaging fields. Lignin, a phenolic‐rich biomass component, holds promise for producing value‐added products. However, its complex structure and recalcitrance present challenges for its effective utilization. To overcome this, a AuPd/Li−Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst was developed to facilitate lignin depolymerization. Various AuPd bimetallic nanoparticle compositions were supported on a basic Li−Al LDH support via a sol‐immobilization method and characterized using N2‐physisorption, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The catalysts were then evaluated in the oxidation of several benzylic alcohols using O2 as the oxidant, from which Au7Pd3/Li−Al LDH and Au1Pd1/Li−Al LDH were identified as possessing promising catalytic activity. Further investigations focused on the aerobic oxidation of β‐O‐4 linked lignin model dimers under atmospheric pressure. The tested catalysts demonstrated sequential oxidation of the model compounds, leading to cleavage of the β‐O‐4 linkage. Finally, the catalysts were applied to the oxidative deconstruction of γ‐valerolactone (GVL) extracted maple lignin at 120 °C. Au1Pd1/Li−Al LDH emerged as the most effective catalyst, yielding a range of aromatic monomers with a total monomer yield of 27 %. These results highlight the potential of the Au1Pd1/Li−Al LDH catalyst system as an eco‐friendly approach for lignin depolymerization under mild conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efficient extraction of lignin from intricate lignocellulose is a challenge for the high-value utilization of lignocellulosic biomass in sustainable biorefinery. In this work, a p-toluene sulfonic acid-coupling ethylene glycol (PTSA/EG) pretreatment was developed to extract lignin from cornstalks. The results showed that the synergistic effect between p-toluene sulfonic acid and ethylene glycol resulted in an increase in the delignification ratio from 43.43 to 85.37% compared with PTSA aqueous pretreatment. When the concentration of PTSA was 5 wt.%, the delignification ratio reached 85.37% at 383.15 K under the PTSA/EG pretreatment. Moreover, the lignin fractions obtained by water precipitation have high purity (>90%) and a low molecular weight (1777~2271 Da). The fractionated lignin was depolymerized with Ru/C catalyst and methanol at 508.15 K for 3 h. When the pretreatment temperature is 368.15 K, the fractionated lignin has a good depolymerization performance, and the detected monomers yield reaches 17.46%. Overall, pretreatment using PTSA and EG could realize the disruption of the degradation barrier of lignocellulose and fractionate lignin with specific structures by adjusting the pretreatment conditions, which was conducive to commercial applications in biomass refining. Tender coconut husk (TCH) is a prominent part of coconut fruit, and it is discarded after consumption of tender coconut water. TCH is made of fibers that comprise lignin (30–42%) and cellulose (54–65%) and also contains traces of tannin and potassium. In this study, development of most feasible and adaptable method for production of biochar from TCH is reported. The method opted for the production of biochar is pyrolysis, and temperature of pyrolysis has a direct correlation with the characteristics of resultant biochar. The main parameters investigated are the size of the reactor, type of fuel, and positioning of the drum. Biochemical parameters of biochar such as moisture content, ash content, pH and electrical conductivity, and total nitrogen content of the product were studied. The results reveal that sample collected from the upper layer of the large-sized reactor kept in upright position and using mature coconut husk as a fuel for biochar production was found to be the best considering the yield and physicochemical properties. We studied the recovery of the growth and physiological parameters of Scots pine seedlings after long-term zinc toxicity. The removal of excess zinc from the nutrient solution resulted in the rapid recovery of primary root growth but did not promote the initiation and growth of lateral roots. The recovery of root growth was accompanied by the rapid uptake of manganese, magnesium, and copper. Despite the maximum rate of manganese uptake by the roots, the manganese content in the needles of the recovering plants did not reach control values during the 28 days of the experiment, unlike magnesium, iron, and copper. In general, the recovery of ion homeostasis eliminated all of the negative effects on the photosynthetic pigment content in the needles. However, these changes, along with recovery of the water content in the needles, were not accompanied by an increase in the weight gain of the recovering seedlings compared with that of the Zn-stressed seedlings. The increased accumulation of phenolic compounds in the needles persisted for a long period after excess zinc was removed from the nutrient solution. The decreased lignin content in the roots and needles is a characteristic feature of Zn-stressed plants. Forage maize is a versatile crop extensively utilized for animal nutrition in agriculture and holds promise as a valuable resource for the production of fermentable sugars in the biorefinery sector. Within this context, the carbohydrate fraction of the lignocellulosic biomass undergoes deconstruction during ruminal digestion and the saccharification process. However, the cell wall's natural resistance towards enzymatic degradation poses a significant challenge during both processes. This so-called biomass recalcitrance is primarily attributed to the presence of lignin and ferulates in the cell walls. Consequently, maize varieties with a reduced lignin or ferulate content or an altered lignin composition can have important beneficial effects on cell wall digestibility. Considerable efforts in genetic improvement have been dedicated towards enhancing cell wall digestibility, benefiting agriculture, the biorefinery sector and the environment. In part I of this paper, we review conventional and advanced breeding methods used in the genetic improvement of maize germplasm. Polymers may suffer from sudden mechanical damages during long‐term use under various harsh operating environments. Rapid and real‐time self‐healing will extend their service life, which is particularly attractive in the context of circular economy. In this work, a lignin cluster polymerization strategy (LCPS) was designed to prepare a series of lignin functionalized polyolefin composites with excellent mechanical properties through nickel catalyzed copolymerization of ethylene and lignin cluster monomers. These composites can achieve rapid self‐healing within 30 seconds under a variety of extreme usage environments (underwater, seawater, extremely low temperatures as low as −60 °C, organic solvents, acid/alkali solvents, etc.), which is of great significance for real‐time self‐healing of sudden mechanical damage. Clubroot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, is a significant disease affecting brassica crops worldwide and poses a threat to canola (Brassica napus) production in western Canada. Management of this disease heavily relies on the use of resistant cultivars, but resistance erosion is a serious concern due to the highly diverse pathogen populations. Understanding resistance mechanisms may aid in better deployment/rotation of clubroot resistance (CR) genes and improve resistance resilience. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis using resistant canola varieties carrying either a single (Rcr1) or double CR genes (Rcr1+Crr1rutb) to decipher the resistance modes associated with these genes. Cell wall (CW) biopolymeric compounds in different root layers were mapped and quantified using Fourier-transform mid-infrared microspectroscopy for changes in CW elements associated with clubroot resistance. Transmission electron and confocal microscopy were used to assess root infection details and relative transcript abundance was analyzed to determine the activation of the lignin-related pathway in relation to resistance. Neither resistant variety affected the primary infection of root hairs/epidermal cells compared to the susceptible "Westar", but both exhibited strong inhibition of cortical infection, effectively 'trapping' the pathogen in the exodermis. The most prominent change observed was increased lignin accumulation associated with resistance. In Westar, the pathogen was able to degrade CW lignin, facilitating access to the root cortex by secondary plasmodia of P. brassicae. In contrast, resistant varieties showed clear lignin accumulation around the penetration site on the exodermis, accompanied by elevated expression of genes involved in the phenylpropanoid pathway. These results suggest that induced lignin accumulation plays a role in clubroot resistance mediated by the CR genes Rcr1 and Crr1rutb in canola, providing cellular and structural evidence that supports the data from earlier transcriptomic studies. Plant tissue in vitro culture is increasingly used in agriculture to improve crop production, nutritional quality, and commercial value. In plant virology, the technique is used as sanitation protocol to produce virus‐free plants. Sanitized (S) artichokes show increased vigour compared to their non‐sanitized (NS) counterparts, because viral infections lead to a decline of growth and development.To investigate mechanisms that control the complex traits related to morphology, growth, and yield in S artichokes compared to NS plants, RNAseq analysis and phenotyping by imaging were used. The role of peroxidases (POD) was also investigated to understand their involvement in sanitized plant development.Results showed that virus infection affected regulation of cell cycle, gene expression and signal transduction modulating cellular response to stimulus/stress. Moreover, primary metabolism and photosynthesis were also influenced, contributing to explain the main morphological differences observed between S and NS artichokes. Sanitized artichokes are also characterized by higher POD activity, probably associated with increased plant growth, rather than strengthening of cell walls.Overall, results show that the differences in development of S artichokes may be derived from the in vitro culture stressor, as well as through pathogen elimination, which, in turn, improve qualitative and quantitative artichoke production. A simple manual flow injection method was used to formulate chitosan-lignin composite beads in a ratio of 1:1. The beads were then characterized using FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis), and XRD (X-ray Diffraction). The FT-IR results indicate the chemical composition, revealing the presence of C-O, NH, C-H, and OH on chitosan, as well as OH, C-O-C, C = C, -O-CH3, and C-H, showing the presence and dispersion of lignin within chitosan molecules. SEM was useful for looking at the surface shape and showed structural differences between pure chitosan (which had a smooth surface with few holes) and composite beads (which had sharp edges and a rough, wrinkled shape). The TGA sheds light on the thermal stability and degradation properties of the beads. The thermograms show a similar pattern; however, the degradation temperature improved with the addition of lignin. An XRD investigation revealed the crystalline nature of the beads. Chitosan beads showed a sharp peak at 2θ = 21.8°, whereas in composites, the first peak was observed at 2θ = 9.9° second at 2θ = 20.130° and the third at 2θ = 28°. These findings allowed for the possibility that chitosan/lignin composite beads may be a good adsorbent for use in wastewater treatment systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Key message: Transcriptomics and phenotypic data analysis identified 24 transcription factors (TFs) that play key roles in regulating the competitive accumulation of lignin and flavonoids. Tilia tuan Szyszyl. (T. tuan) is a timber tree species with important ecological and commercial value. However, its highly lignified pericarp results in a low seed germination rate and a long dormancy period. In addition, it is unknown whether there is an interaction between the biosynthesis of flavonoids and lignin as products of the phenylpropanoid pathway during seed development. To explore the molecular regulatory mechanism of lignin and flavonoid biosynthesis, T. tuan seeds were harvested at five stages (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 days after pollination) for lignin and flavonoid analyses. The results showed that lignin accumulated rapidly in the early and middle stages (S1, S3, and S4), and rapid accumulation of flavonoids during the early and late stages (S1 and S5). High-throughput RNA sequencing analysis of developing seeds identified 50,553 transcripts, including 223 phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway genes involved in lignin accumulation grouped into 3 clusters, and 106 flavonoid biosynthetic pathway genes (FBPGs) grouped into 2 clusters. Subsequent WGCNA and time-ordered gene co-expression network (TO-GCN) analysis revealed that 24 TFs (e.g., TtARF2 and TtWRKY15) were involved in flavonoids and lignin biosynthesis regulation. The transcriptome data were validated by qRT-PCR to analyze the expression profiles of key enzyme-coding genes. This study revealed that there existed a competitive relationship between flavonoid and lignin biosynthesis pathway during the development of T. tuan seeds, that provide a foundation for the further exploration of molecular mechanisms underlying lignin and flavonoid accumulation in T. tuan seeds. Summary: A large fraction of plant litter comprises recalcitrant aromatic compounds (lignin and other phenolics). Quantifying the fate of aromatic compounds is difficult, because oxidative degradation of aromatic carbon (C) is a costly but necessary endeavor for microorganisms, and we do not know when gains from the decomposition of aromatic C outweigh energetic costs.To evaluate these tradeoffs, we developed a litter decomposition model in which the aromatic C decomposition rate is optimized dynamically to maximize microbial growth for the given costs of maintaining ligninolytic activity. We tested model performance against > 200 litter decomposition datasets collected from published literature and assessed the effects of climate and litter chemistry on litter decomposition.The model predicted a time‐varying ligninolytic oxidation rate, which was used to calculate the lag time before the decomposition of aromatic C is initiated. Warmer conditions increased decomposition rates, shortened the lag time of aromatic C oxidation, and improved microbial C‐use efficiency by decreasing the costs of oxidation. Moreover, a higher initial content of aromatic C promoted an earlier start of aromatic C decomposition under any climate.With this contribution, we highlight the application of eco‐evolutionary approaches based on optimized microbial life strategies as an alternative parametrization scheme for litter decomposition models. Lignin is a polyphenolic polymer that is an important factor in limiting fiber digestibility by ruminants. The objective of the current study was to evaluate lignin's effects on whole animal energy utilization in diets similar in NDF content. A low-lignin (LoLig) diet was formulated to contain 32.5% NDF (DM basis) and 9.59% lignin (NDF basis) and the high-lignin (HiLig) diet was formulated to contain 31.0% NDF (DM basis) and 13.3% lignin (NDF basis). These diets were randomly assigned and fed to 12 late-lactation (mean ± SD; 214 ± 14.9 DIM) multiparous Jersey cows (mean ± SD; 435 ± 13.9 kg) in a 2-period crossover design. Cows fed the LoLig treatment consumed more DM than cows on the HiLig diet (mean ± SD; 19.9 vs. 18.7 ± 0.645 kg/d) and the LoLig diet was concurrently of a greater gross energy concentration (mean ± SEM; 4.27 vs. 4.23 ± 0.03 Mcal/kg). As expected, increasing the concentration of lignin resulted in a reduction in total-tract NDF digestibility (45.5% vs. 40.4% ± 0.742%). Increasing lignin also resulted in a reduction in the digestibility of starch (97.7 vs. 96.3 ± 0.420) and CP (65.0 vs. 60.0 ± 0.829). Lignin also decreased the concentration of digestible energy (2.83 vs. 2.63 ± 0.04 Mcal/kg) and ME (2.52 vs. 2.36 ± 0.05 Mcal/kg), but the concentration of NE L was similar (1.81 vs. 1.75 ± 0.06 Mcal/kg). Increasing the concentration of lignin also reduced yields of ECM (33.7 vs. 30.0 ± 0.838 kg/d), milk protein (1.00 vs. 0.843 ± 0.027 kg/d), and milk fat (1.30 vs. 1.19 ± 0.058 kg/d). Decreasing the dietary lignin concentration did not affect daily methane emissions, averaging 391 ± 29.6 L/d. Results of this study indicate that feeding a diet greater in lignin decreases the digestibility of nutrients and provides less energy for production responses and that energy supplied from digestible NDF may be less than predicted by some nutrition models. Rising atmospheric CO2 levels, a significant consequence of anthropogenic activities, profoundly impact global agriculture and food security by altering plant physiological processes. Despite extensive research, a comprehensive understanding of the specific effects of elevated CO2 on maize (Zea mays L.)'s primary and secondary metabolism remains elusive. This study investigated the responses of maize seedlings cultivated in open-top chambers (OTCs) under three CO2 concentrations: ambient (380 ppm), elevated (600 ppm), and high (1800 ppm). Key growth parameters, including plant height, leaf area, and aboveground biomass (leaf and stem), were assessed alongside metabolic profiles encompassing nonstructural and structural carbohydrates, syringyl (S) and guaiacyl lignin, the syringyl-to-guaiacyl (S/G)-lignin ratio, photosynthetic pigments, total soluble protein, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The results demonstrated that exposure to 600 ppm CO2 significantly enhanced plant height, leaf area, and aboveground biomass compared to ambient conditions. Concurrently, there were notable increases in the concentrations of primary metabolites. In contrast, exposure to 1800 ppm CO2 severely inhibited these growth parameters and induced reductions in secondary metabolites, such as chlorophyll and soluble proteins, throughout the growth stages. The findings underscore the intricate responses of maize metabolism to varying CO2 levels, highlighting adaptive strategies in primary and secondary metabolism under changing atmospheric conditions. This research contributes to a nuanced understanding of maize's physiological adaptations to future climate scenarios characterized by elevated CO2, with implications for sustainable agriculture and food security. The stems of some herbaceous species can undergo basal secondary growth, leading to a continuum in the degree of woodiness along the stem. Whether the formation of secondary growth in the stem base results in differences in embolism resistance between the base and the upper portions of stems is unknown. We assessed the embolism resistance of leaves and the basal and upper portions of stems simultaneously within the same individuals of two divergent herbaceous species that undergo secondary growth in the mature stem bases. The species were Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) and Senecio minimus (fireweed). Basal stem in mature plants of both species displayed advanced secondary growth and greater resistance to embolism than the upper stem. This also resulted in significant vulnerability segmentation between the basal stem and the leaves in both species. Greater embolism resistance in the woodier stem base was found alongside decreases in the pith‐to‐xylem ratio, increases in the proportion of secondary xylem, and increases in lignin content. We show that there can be considerable variation in embolism resistance across the stem in herbs and that this variation is linked to the degree of secondary growth present. A gradient in embolism resistance across the stem in herbaceous plants could be an adaptation to ensure reproduction or basal resprouting during episodes of drought late in the lifecycle. Summary statement: The basal stems of some herbs undergo secondary growth as plants get older, leading to a continuum in woodiness and embolism resistance along the stem. Lignin is part of the lignocellulosic biomass found in hardwoods, softwoods, and herbaceous plants. It is isolated by fractionation and pulping processes, where it is considered a waste product and is mainly burned to generate electricity and heat. However, lignin is a biopolymer that can be a source of many chemicals of significant value after treatments of functionalisation or depolymerisation. The main processes for its valorisation require solubilisation in organic solvents, which may affect the process's mass balance and the biopolymer's chemical structure, as lignins are rarely completely soluble in organic solvents. In this research, two industrial Kraft lignins derived from softwood and hardwood were treated using different green organic solvents (2-methyl tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydrofuran, 1-methoxy-2-propanol, and acetone), measuring the soluble and insoluble content to determine the mass balance, and the solubility was evaluated using Hansen parameters and FTIR. The results showed that both lignins were more soluble in tetrahydrofuran and 1-methoxy-2-propanol. Also, tetrahydrofuran performed better than the 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran, which is considered the green alternative. The reason can be explained using the Hansen solubility parameters. Moreover, the solubilised fractions showed similar FTIR spectra. The same is the case for the insoluble parts. The primary focus of this study is to assess the stripping resistance of bitumen when partially replaced with rice-straw biomass-based lignin from bio-ethanol industry residue. Moreover, the study examines the relationship between the chemical and physicochemical (surface free energy or SFE) properties of lignin-substituted bitumen blends and their stripping potential. Two distinct lignin materials were examined: fermentation residue (FRL), a by-product directly obtained from the bio-ethanol industry, and Isolated Lignin (IL), which was extracted from FRL through an alkali-acid precipitation process. These materials were partially substituted at dosages of 5%, 10%, and 15% by weight of bitumen. Test results indicated that the addition of lignin to bitumen led to a change in SFE, with an increase in the polar component and a reduction in the dispersive component. The rolling bottle test revealed that bitumen blends containing IL and FRL displayed superior stripping resistance compared to the base bitumen, retaining more coating after testing. This enhancement in performance was attributed to the increased heteroatom content [sum of nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), and sulfur (S)] and higher IS═O and IC═O indices upon adding the lignin materials. While the energy ratio obtained from the SFE alone did not entirely explain the stripping resistance of lignin-substituted bitumen, the presence of heteroatoms like N, O, and S, and the presence of silicon (Si) and associated functional groups played a substantial role in the chemical adhesion of these bitumen blends to aggregates. The brown midrib bmr6 and bmr12 mutants of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) have alterations to the phenylpropanoid pathway impairing the activity of cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) and/or caffeate5/hydroxyferulate O‐methyl transferase (COMT) enzymes, which inhibit lignin synthesis. Interestingly, these phenylpropanoids can also act as sunscreen compounds in plants and potentially attenuate ultraviolet radiation. We examined the effects of ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B; 280–320 nm) exclusion on growth, cell‐wall constituents and UV‐screening abilities of bmr6, bmr12, a double mutant (bmr6 bmr12; dm) and wild‐type (WT) genotypes of S. bicolor. Plants were grown in a UV‐transparent greenhouse under filters that either transmitted 2.8% (Mylar) or 90% (Aclar) of UV‐B. The greenhouse experiment was a 2 × 4 (UV treatment × genotype) complete factorial design. Sorghum grown under reduced UV were 23% taller and had 22% fewer leaves. Among genotypes, the WT plants were 5%–12% taller than the bmr6, bmr12 and dm mutants. The near‐ambient UV‐B treatment group was more effective at UV screening and had a 16% higher UV‐screening effectiveness than those under reduced UV‐B. Sorghum plants with the bmr6 and dm genotypes had 8%–19% higher UV‐shield than the bmr12 and WT. Plants grown under the reduced UV‐B treatment had 5% less hemicellulose and 6% more cellulose in their cell walls. There were no overall treatment effects on bulk soluble phenolics, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) or lignin concentrations. These results are a possible indication that the bmr mutants of S. bicolor have a varied response to UV‐B exclusion due to alterations in the phenylpropanoid pathway leading to redistribution of metabolites. Nowadays, there is a challenge in searching for more sustainable alternatives to decrease the environmental impact of composite materials. In this work, we fabricate new composites based on a biobased-content epoxy system, lignin, and flax fiber; considering these materials could be promising due to their high renewable content of around 40%. In addition, another key requirement for composites, besides being sustainable, is that they present improved properties such as UV resistance. Therefore, throughout this work, priority was given to improving UV resistance in addition to taking into account sustainability. In order to carry out a complete characterization of the materials developed, the mechanical properties, brightness, and thermal, rheological, and fire behavior of these kinds of materials were analyzed by using vacuum-assisted resin infusion processes. By way of conclusion, it should be noted that the manufactured composite with the optimized formulation showed improved UV resistance using lignin and that it could be applied on internal and external walls according to the railway fire regulations. The biosynthesis of cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses in plant secondary cell walls (SCWs) is regulated by a hierarchical transcriptional regulatory network. This network features orthologous transcription factors shared between poplar and Arabidopsis, highlighting a foundational similarity in their genetic regulation. However, knowledge on the discrepant behavior of the transcriptional‐level molecular regulatory mechanisms between poplar and Arabidopsis remains limited. In this study, we investigated the function of PagMYB128 during wood formation and found it had broader impacts on SCW formation compared to its Arabidopsis ortholog, AtMYB103. Transgenic poplar trees overexpressing PagMYB128 exhibited significantly enhanced xylem development, with fiber cells and vessels displaying thicker walls, and an increase in the levels of cellulose, lignin, and hemicelluloses in the wood. In contrast, plants with dominant repression of PagMYB128 demonstrated the opposite phenotypes. RNA sequencing and reverse transcription – quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that PagMYB128 could activate SCW biosynthetic gene expression, and chromatin immunoprecipitation along with yeast one‐hybrid, and effector–reporter assays showed this regulation was direct. Further analysis revealed that PagSND1 (SECONDARY WALL‐ASSOCIATED NAC‐DOMAIN PROTEIN1) directly regulates PagMYB128 but not cell wall metabolic genes, highlighting the pivotal role of PagMYB128 in the SND1‐driven regulatory network for wood development, thereby creating a feedforward loop in SCW biosynthesis. Anther dehiscence is a crucial event in plant reproduction, tightly regulated and dependent on the lignification of the anther endothecium. In this study, we investigated the rapid lignification process that ensures timely anther dehiscence in Arabidopsis. Our findings reveal that endothecium lignification can be divided into two distinct phases. During Phase I, lignin precursors are synthesized without polymerization, while Phase II involves simultaneous synthesis of lignin precursors and polymerization. The transcription factors MYB26, NST1/2, and ARF17 specifically regulate the pathway responsible for the synthesis and polymerization of lignin monomers in Phase II. MYB26‐NST1/2 is the key regulatory pathway responsible for endothecium lignification, while ARF17 facilitates this process by interacting with MYB26. Interestingly, our results demonstrate that the lignification of the endothecium, which occurs within approximately 26 h, is much faster than that of the vascular tissue. These findings provide valuable insights into the regulation mechanism of rapid lignification in the endothecium, which enables timely anther dehiscence and successful pollen release during plant reproduction. A density functional theory method was employed to conduct theoretical calculations on the pyrolysis reaction pathways of lignin monomer model compounds with an aldehyde or carboxyl group under the catalytic effect of alkali metal ions Na+ and K+, exploring their influence on the formation of the small molecular gaseous products CO and CO2. The results indicate that Na+ and K+ can easily bind with the oxygen-containing functional groups of the lignin monomer model compounds to form stable and low-energy complexes. Except for benzaldehyde and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, Na+ and K+ can facilitate the decarbonylation reactions of other benzaldehyde-based and phenylacetaldehyde-based lignin monomer model compounds during the pyrolysis process, thereby enhancing the generation of CO. When the characteristic functional groups on the benzene rings of benzaldehyde-based and phenylacetaldehyde-based lignin monomer model compounds are the same, the phenylacetaldehyde-based ones are more prone to undergo decarbonylation than the benzaldehyde-based ones. Additionally, both Na+ and K+ can inhibit the decarboxylation reactions of benzoic acid-based and phenylacetic acid-based lignin monomer model compounds, thereby restraining the formation of CO2. When the characteristic functional groups on the benzene rings of benzoic acid-based and phenylacetic acid-based lignin monomer model compounds are the same, the phenylacetic acid-based ones are more difficult to undergo decarboxylation than the benzoic acid-based ones. Root‐knot nematodes (RKNs) are one of the most serious pests of carrot plants. Resistance cultivars are a cost‐effective and ecofriendly management strategy for nematodes. To develop these, it is essential to understand the genetic, molecular and biochemical aspects underpinning RKN infection. Here, Meloidogyne javanica penetration and development, defence reactions and antioxidant enzyme activity were investigated in a resistant carrot cultivar (TN‐99‐129) compared to the susceptible cultivar TN‐99‐62. No significant difference was found in the number of J2s penetrating the roots of both cultivars. At 2 days post‐inoculation (DPI), necrosis symptoms were observed around the head of penetrated nematodes. Cell death also increased in the roots of the nematode‐infected TN‐99‐129 cultivar. Callose deposition happened at 6 DPI, and lignin content increased with delay (21 DPI) in the inoculated resistant cultivar. In addition, the reactive oxygen species metabolism process in resistant and susceptible cultivars was significantly different. In TN‐99‐129, catalase activity inhibition was observed at the early (2 DPI) phases of infection, and increasing superoxide dismutase activity and a relative decrease in catalase activity during nematode development. The activity of guaiacol peroxidase also increased significantly in the resistant cultivar, but no significant difference was observed in the activity of ascorbate peroxidase. This study explains the process of defence reactions in the TN‐99‐129 carrot cultivar during RKN penetration and development. Lignin, an amorphous biomacromolecule abundantly distributed in the plant kingdom, has gained considerable attention due to its intrinsic bioactivities and renewable nature. Owing to its polyphenolic structure, lignin has a variety of human health activities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antitumor, and other activities. The extraction of lignin from various sources in a green and sustainable manner is critical in the food industry. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) has recently been recognized as a class of safe and environmentally friendly media capable of efficiently extracting lignin. This article comprehensively reviews the recent advances in lignin extraction using DES, discusses the influential factors on the antioxidant activity of lignin, interprets the relationship between antioxidant activity and lignin structure, and overviews the applications of lignin in the food industry. Sulfonated carbon catalysts exhibit superior catalytic performance for production of biobased chemicals, but the catalyst preparation approaches are still suffered from high corrosion and possible pollution risks. In this paper, lignin extracted from corn stover was used to prepare lignin-based activated carbon, which was then subjected to grafting modification by sulfur dioxide nonthermal plasma method to construct a novel lignin-derived solid acid catalyst (LP-LDSA). The catalytic performances of LP-LDSA were further determined by dehydration of fructose to produce 5-HMF in a biphasic solvent system composed by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water. Under the optimal conditions, the 5-HMF yield and reaction selectivity were 88.9% and 89.4%, respectively. This LP-LDSA catalyst also exhibited excellent stability and reusability in five sequential reaction batches. This method has advantages of shorter solid acid preparation duration, lower energy consumption, and higher catalytic stability, presenting an innovative and green method for sulfonation production of solid acid catalyst. The supermolecule-mediated method is employed to prepare an organic molecule aggregate (OMA) precursor called MCAL in which the dopant agent (melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular (MCA)) and biomass molecule (alkali lignin (AL)) are uniformly mixed. Utilizing amorphous carbon derived from sustainable biomass presents an economical and environmentally friendly option for anode material in high-rate potassium-ion storage applications. Nevertheless, the potassium-ion storage capacity of most biomass-derived carbon materials remains modest. Addressing this challenge, nitrogen doping engineering and the design of distinctive nanostructures emerge as effective strategies for enhancing the electrochemical performance of amorphous carbon anodes. Developing highly nitrogen-doped nanocarbon materials is a challenging task because most lignocellulosic biomasses lack nitrogen functional groups. In this work, we propose a general strategy for directly carbonizing supermolecule-mediated lignin organic molecular aggregate (OMA) to prepare highly nitrogen-doped biomass-derived nanocarbon. We obtained lignin-derived, highly nitrogen-doped turbine-like carbon (LNTC). Featuring a three-dimensional turbine-like structure composed of amorphous, thin carbon nanosheets, LNTC demonstrated a capacity of 377 mAh g−1 when used as the anode for PIHCs. Dead wood is a key substrate of forests that plays an important role in fertility and productivity. However, dead wood is scarce in traditionally managed forests like Mediterranean dehesas. The chemical composition of downed dead wood in Quercus pyrenaica dehesas was analysed in different physical decomposition stages as a proxy of dead wood decay length. We also assessed the contribution of fungal activity, by quantifying ergosterol, to the chemical composition of deadwood. Chemical analyses included elemental composition determination, thermogravimetry and infrared spectroscopy. Our results showed that both the physical decomposition stage and ergosterol content extensively predicted the chemical composition of Q. pyrenaica dead wood decay processes under field conditions. The physical stage was a better predictor of the C/P ratio and polysaccharides proportion, while ergosterol better predicted P content and the N/P ratio. In other cases like lignin, the relation between ergosterol content and chemical composition varied depending on the physical stage. In addition, environmental local factors differentially affected chemical composition across physical decomposition stages. We conclude that the physical decomposition stage and ergosterol content complementarily contribute to estimate the temporal behaviour of the chemical composition of dead wood in Mediterranean areas. Moreover, we recommend using the FT-IR analysis to assess the nature of temporal chemical changes in downed dead wood. Finally, our study claims to consider the potential impact of local environmental factors, such as air temperature and relative humidity, on dead wood decay processes in traditionally managed forests in the current global change scenario. The study represents new bioanalytical characterization of mainly organic components of the poorly investigated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the enigmatic diatom Didymosphenia geminata, an invasive, worldwide expanding species endangering diverse ecosystems. This microalga attaches its siliceous cells to rocky substrates using fibrous stalks, which are made of an EPS-based matrix stabilized by crystalline calcite. The EPS were analyzed using selected methods, including microscopic, spectroscopic, and spectrometric techniques. We identified diverse types of biomolecules. The presence of lipids, condensed aromatics, and heteroaromatic compounds in the EPS has been confirmed using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS). Additionally, both sulfur-containing functionalities and carboxylic acids were determined too using infrared (IR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. For the first time, lignin compounds have been detected as one of the components of the EPS of the D. geminata diatom, using HR-MS and fluorescence microscopy (FM) in combination with specific staining techniques. By increasing the understanding of the chemistry and structural features of the stalks, we aim to develop potential applications and methods for removing these stalks from affected regions in the future, or, alternatively, to use them as a large-scale source of sustainable biocomposite material. The work describes the preparation of bio‐based precursor carbon fibers (CFs) by a solvent‐free process. Fibers from lignin, cellulose acetate, and triacetin as plasticizer are successfully obtained by melt‐spinning showing a potential alternative to traditional precursor fibers from petroleum produced by wet‐spinning. Thermal, morphological, and structural properties of precursor fibers are studied. In particular, precursor fibers present glass transition temperatures lower than neat polymers, indicating the feasibility of using melt‐spinning due to an enhanced softening. Two stabilization thermal treatments with fast or slow heating are adopted to prepare the precursor fibers for carbonization. The CF yield achieves 32% for the materials at high lignin content. Lignin is a complex of organic polymers that are abundantly present in the plant cell wall which considered of emerging substrates for various kinds of value-added industrial products. Lignin has potential use for the production of green nanomaterials, which exhibit improved or different properties corresponding to their parent polymers. Nano lignin has received significant interest in recent years due to its applications in numerous fields. Lignin, the abundant and limited functionality has challenges for its potential uses. Creating advanced functional lignin-derived material like lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) which significantly alter the biological process has great potential for its applications. In the fields of biotechnology, several lignin extraction processes from various raw materials and diverse synthesis techniques, including acid precipitation, dialysis, solvent shifting/solvent exchange, antisolvent precipitation, homogenization, water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion, ultra-sonication, interfacial crosslinking, polymerization, and biological pathway can be employed to produce LNPs. The scientific community has recently become more concerned about the transformation of lignin to lignin nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanocapsules, nanofibers, nanotubes, and nanofilms. Recent research has shown that lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are: non-toxic at adequate amounts (both in vitro and in vivo), are economical, and can be biodegradable by bacteria and fungi. In promising studies, LNPs have been investigated for their potential applications in gene delivery systems, drug carriers, biocatalysts, tissue engineering, heavy metal absorbers, encapsulation of molecules, supercapacitors, hybrid nanocomposites, and other applications. This current review addresses the recent advances in the synthesis of LNPs, their advanced application in different areas, future perspectives, and challenges associated with lignin-based nanomaterials.
