Summary Wood of broad‐leaf tree species is a valued source of renewable biomass for biorefinery and a target for genetic improvement efforts to reduce its recalcitrance. Glucuronoxylan (GX) plays a key role in recalcitrance through its interactions with cellulose and lignin. To reduce recalcitrance, we modified wood GX by expressing GH10 and GH11 endoxylanases from Aspergillus nidulans in hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. × tremuloides Michx.) and targeting the enzymes to cell wall. The xylanases reduced tree height, modified cambial activity by increasing phloem and reducing xylem production, and reduced secondary wall deposition. Xylan molecular weight was decreased, and the spacing between acetyl and MeGlcA side chains was reduced in transgenic lines. The transgenic trees produced hypolignified xylem having thin secondary walls and deformed vessels. Glucose yields of enzymatic saccharification without pretreatment almost doubled indicating decreased recalcitrance. The transcriptomics, hormonomics and metabolomics data provided evidence for activation of cytokinin and ethylene signalling pathways, decrease in ABA levels, transcriptional suppression of lignification and a subset of secondary wall biosynthetic program, including xylan glucuronidation and acetylation machinery. Several candidate genes for perception of impairment in xylan integrity were detected. These candidates could provide a new target for uncoupling negative growth effects from reduced recalcitrance. In conclusion, our study supports the hypothesis that xylan modification generates intrinsic signals and evokes novel pathways regulating tree growth and secondary wall biosynthesis. The positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) spectroscopy characteristics of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) composites reinforced with treated wheat husk fibers (WHFs) were investigated for the first time. PAL spectroscopy is employed to study the free volume of polymers. The use of lignocellulosic materials as reinforcement in polymeric composites has gained attention due to their low cost, availability, and eco-friendliness. In this study, the impact of the loading concentration on the interfacial adhesion between the EPDM matrix and WHFs is quantified, along with the evaluation of swelling measurement and tensile properties. Additionally, the nanoscopic properties derived from PAL spectroscopy correlate with the composites' macroscopic properties. In addition, the dielectric properties of the investigated samples have been studied, and their conductivity has been calculated. To determine the conduction mechanism within these samples and how it is affected by the addition of WHF, the change in electrical conductivity with the frequency of the external electric field applied to the samples was studied, and from this, the conduction mechanism was determined, and the barrier height value was calculated. The experimental results provide insights into the relationship between the structure and properties of EPDM-WHF biocomposites, offering valuable knowledge for developing sustainable and high-performance materials. The selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of sustainable lignocellulosic biomass plays a pivotal role in the conversion of biomass into high-value fuels and chemicals. Nevertheless, HDO for biomass upgrading always demands high temperatures and high hydrogen (H 2) pressure. Photothermal catalysis has been recognized as an effective approach for boosting chemical reactions under mild conditions while maintaining superior selectivity. Herein, we report the design of palladium-decorated defective tungsten oxide (Pd/WO 3-x) catalysts with enhanced photothermal catalytic performances for the efficient HDO of vanillin. Pd/WO 3-x nanoflowers have been synthesized through a solvothermal/ in-situ reduction two-step strategy, and they exhibit notable photoabsorption in a wide range (200–1100 nm), high photothermal conversion and efficient charge separation efficiency. Under simulated sunlight irradiation (0.3 W cm−2), Pd/WO 3-x exhibits a maximum vanillin conversion up to 86.8 % with a 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) selectivity of 100 %, which is obviously higher than that (vanillin conversion = 33.1 %, MMP selectivity = 100 %) in the oil bath at the same temperature. Such higher conversion efficiency and selectivity under sunlight should result from the synergistic integration of hot electrons and photothermal heating, both of which are derived from localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in WO 3-x. Importantly, Pd/WO 3-x catalyst demonstrates good stability and high selectivity to MMP even after 5 cycles. Background: The microbial landscape within termite guts varies across termite families. The gut microbiota of lower termites (LT) is dominated by cellulolytic flagellates that sequester wood particles in their digestive vacuoles, whereas in the flagellate-free higher termites (HT), cellulolytic activity has been attributed to fiber-associated bacteria. However, little is known about the role of individual lineages in fiber digestion, particularly in LT. Results: We investigated the lignocellulolytic potential of 2223 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) recovered from the gut metagenomes of 51 termite species. In the flagellate-dependent LT, cellulolytic enzymes are restricted to MAGs of Bacteroidota (Dysgonomonadaceae, Tannerellaceae, Bacteroidaceae, Azobacteroidaceae) and Spirochaetota (Breznakiellaceae) and reflect a specialization on cellodextrins, whereas their hemicellulolytic arsenal features activities on xylans and diverse heteropolymers. By contrast, the MAGs derived from flagellate-free HT possess a comprehensive arsenal of exo- and endoglucanases that resembles that of termite gut flagellates, underlining that Fibrobacterota and Spirochaetota occupy the cellulolytic niche that became vacant after the loss of the flagellates. Furthermore, we detected directly or indirectly oxygen-dependent enzymes that oxidize cellulose or modify lignin in MAGs of Pseudomonadota (Burkholderiales, Pseudomonadales) and Actinomycetota (Actinomycetales, Mycobacteriales), representing lineages located at the hindgut wall. The production of bioethanol from lignocellulosic biomass requires the efficient conversion of glucose and xylose to ethanol, a process that depends on the ability of microorganisms to internalize these sugars. Although glucose transporters exist in several species, xylose transporters are less common. Several types of transporters have been identified in diverse microorganisms, including members of the Major Facilitator Superfamily (MFS) and Sugars Will Eventually be Exported Transporter (SWEET) families. Considering that Saccharomyces cerevisiae lacks an effective xylose transport system, engineered yeast strains capable of efficiently consuming this sugar are critical for obtaining high ethanol yields. This article reviews the structure–function relationship of sugar transporters from the MFS and SWEET families. It provides information on several tools and approaches used to identify and characterize them to optimize xylose consumption and, consequently, second-generation ethanol production. Volvariella volvacea is one of the world-famous edible mushroom varieties cultivated in lignocellulosic agricultural waste as a growth media. The present study aimed to investigate the growth and characteristics of V. volvacea and analyze the difference between the V. volvacea production yield using pineapple leaves medium compared to the oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) medium. The biochemical analysis of the substrate was conducted to estimate the substrate's moisture percentage, crude fiber, ash content, and mineral content. The study results revealed that the type of substrate significantly (P < 0.05) affected the mycelial growth, moisture content, and yield of V. volvacea. The fastest growth of mycelium was exhibited on pineapple leaves substrate with mycelium invasion within 3 days. Pineapple leaves also have the highest fruiting body formation diameter (2.57 cm) and moisture content (91.61%). However, there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) observed in other parameters, including cap diameter and stipe length, weight, and biological efficiency (BE) of V. volvacea. In summary, the results demonstrate the possible expenditure of pineapple leaves to cultivate V. volvacea, which would provide a protein-rich food source and help farmers grow V. volvacea with the biological conversion processes of agro-industrial wastes. Alkaline-catalyzed organosolv pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass affords excellent delignification, yielding a holocellulose-rich substrate for fermentable sugar production. However, complete lignin removal is impractical, and residual lignin also exacerbates negative effects on subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. Herein, a novel strategy of developing surfactant-assisted organosolv pretreatment (Triton-X 100, AEO 9 and Tween 80) for in situ lignin modification was proposed to overcome this issue. The results indicated that the pretreated substrates showed considerable enzymatic hydrolyzability with a 15.7%–38.3% higher sugar yield compared to the control group without surfactants. Surfactants could graft on both residual and dissolved lignin through etherification, forming α-etherified lignin, though without significantly changing the component distribution and substrate-related properties. Quantum chemical calculations provided theoretical evidence of strong H-bonding and pronounced interaction energy between lignin and surfactants (maximally at −48.4 kcal mol−1). In particular, this surfactant modification decreased the aliphatic –OH and phenolic –OH contents of residual lignin by 16.0%–22.4% and 13.8%–28.8%, respectively. The reduction of –OH groups mitigated non-productive adsorption between lignin and cellulases via H-bonding interaction, which exhibited a significant correlation with the increased enzymatic hydrolyzability (>−0.9). Overall, this study offers valuable insight into the fundamental understanding of the mechanism involved in lignin modification during surfactant-assisted pretreatment and lignin–enzyme interaction during enzymatic hydrolysis. As a crucial component of batteries, the binder connects the granular active material and the conductive additive into a whole electrode and attaches to the surface of the current collector through a variety of interactions to maintain the electron/ion transport and the integrity of the electrode during the charge–discharge cycles. However, conventional binders are mostly synthetic polymers with single structures and properties and are not renewable, thus the development of multifunctional green renewable binders derived from biomass materials is attracting increasing attention. The distribution and function of lignocellulose in plants are similar to those of binders in electrodes. They strengthen the structure of the plants via hydrogen bonding, π–π conjugation, hydrophobicity, etc., and maintain the diffusion and transport of molecules, aligning with the criteria for the next generation of battery binders. In the context of the significant impact of binders on the performance of advanced battery systems, recent progress in research on lignocellulose derivative-based binders in various batteries is summarized. The research potential and challenges of lignocellulose and its derivatives as binder materials are discussed, with the hope of shedding light on the rational construction of robust and stable lignocellulose-based binders for high-energy-density batteries. To address the problem of non-renewable resources and energy shortages, converting biomass, the only renewable carbon resource on Earth, into various fine chemicals holds significant value. Furfural stands out as one of the most promising platform compounds derived from lignocellulosic biomass. Due to its highly functional molecular structure, furfural can be selectively converted into various fuels and high-value compounds. This review discusses recent developments in furfural production and its conversion into related chemicals, such as furfuryl alcohol, γ-valerolactone, pentanediols, and nitrogen-containing compounds. It provides an in-depth understanding of the catalysts, systems, and mechanisms used in the selective transformation of furfural. The review also explores primary pathways and catalytic mechanisms, with a focus on advances in heterogeneous catalytic systems. Furthermore, it outlines future research directions and offers insights into potential applications in this field. This review presents several research trends, aiming to provide innovative ideas for further exploration of furfural downstream products in a greener, more efficient, and cost-effective manner. d-Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol present in diverse plants that is used as an alternative sweetener based on a sweetness similar to sucrose and several health benefits compared to conventional sugar. However, current industrial methods for d-xylitol production are based on chemical hydrogenation of d-xylose, which is energy-intensive and environmentally harmful. However, efficient conversion of l-arabinose as an additional highly abundant pentose in lignocellulosic materials holds great potential to broaden the range of applicable feedstocks. Both pentoses d-xylose and l-arabinose are converted to d-xylitol as a common metabolic intermediate in the native fungal pentose catabolism. To engineer a strain capable of accumulating d-xylitol from arabinan-rich agricultural residues, pentose catabolism was stopped in the ascomycete filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger at the stage of d-xylitol by knocking out three genes encoding enzymes involved in d-xylitol degradation (ΔxdhA, ΔsdhA, ΔxkiA). Additionally, to facilitate its secretion into the medium, an aquaglyceroporin from Saccharomyces cerevisiae was tested. In S. cerevisiae, Fps1 is known to passively transport glycerol and is regulated to convey osmotic stress tolerance but also exhibits the ability to transport other polyols such as d-xylitol. Thus, a constitutively open version of this transporter was introduced into A. niger, controlled by multiple promoters with varying expression strengths. The strain expressing the transporter under control of the PtvdA promoter in the background of the pentose catabolism-deficient triple knock-out yielded the most favorable outcome, producing up to 45% d-xylitol from l-arabinose in culture supernatants, while displaying minimal side effects during osmotic stress. Due to its additional ability to extract d-xylose and l-arabinose from lignocellulosic material via the production of highly active pectinases and hemicellulases, A. niger emerges as an ideal candidate cell factory for d-xylitol production from lignocellulosic biomasses rich in both pentoses. In summary, we are showing for the first time an efficient biosynthesis of d-xylitol from l-arabinose utilizing a filamentous ascomycete fungus. Effective fractionation of lignocelluosic biomass and subsequent valorization of all three major components under mild conditions were achieved. Pretreatment with acidified monophasic phenoxyethanol (EPH) efficiently removed 92.6 % lignin and 80 % xylan from poplar at 110 °C in 60 min, yielding high‐value EPH‐xyloside, EPH‐modified lignin (EPHL), and a solid residue nearly purely composed of carbohydrates. After removing the grafted acetyl groups using 1 % NaOH at 50 °C, the highest enzymatic digestibility reached 92.3 %. EPHL could be recovered in high yield and purity with an uncondensed structure, while xylose was converted to EPH‐xyloside, a potential precursor in biomedical industries. Additionally, the acidified monophasic EPH solvent could effectively fractionate biomass from species other than hardwood, achieving over 70 % delignification from recalcitrant pinewood under the same mild conditions, demonstrating the high potential of monophasic EPH pretreatment. Lignocellulosic biomass (LB) represents a sustainable and abundant feedstock with diverse applications, particularly in microbial fermentation processes for the production of biofuels and biochemical. An attempt has been made to optimize areal density and number of layers of needle-punched jute nonwoven fabric for the development of a rigid composite with desirable performance properties using Taguchi L9 experimental design. The hand lay-up followed by compression molding protocol was used to prepare composite sheet with jute nonwoven fabric as reinforcement and unsaturated polyester resin as matrix. We evaluated the tensile strength, flexural strength, and volume of reinforcement of the developed composites, and analyzed the data in Minitab 18.0 software to optimize the processing conditions. Results inferred that the areal density of jute fabric reinforcement positively influenced the mechanical properties of the composite sheet, while the number of layers had a negative impact. Statistical analysis revealed that 400 GSM jute nonwoven fabric in three layers could be an optimum condition to develop a rigid composite sheet with the desirable properties of an automobile product. Brewer's spent grains (BSG) offer valuable opportunities for valorization beyond its conventional use as animal feed. Among its components, lignin—a natural polymer with inherent antioxidant properties—holds significant industrial potential. This work investigates the use of microwave-assisted extraction combined with acidic natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDESs) for efficient lignin recovery, evaluating three different NaDES formulations. The results indicate that choline chloride–lactic acid (ChCl-LA), a NaDES with superior thermal stability as confirmed via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), is an ideal solvent for lignin extraction at 150 °C and 15 min, achieving a balance of high yield and quality. ChCl-LA also demonstrated good solubility and cell disruption capabilities, while microwaves significantly reduced processing time and severity. Under optimal conditions, i.e., 150 °C, 15 min, in the presence of ChCl-LA NaDES, the extracted lignin achieved a purity of up to 79% and demonstrated an IC50 (inhibitory concentration 50%) of approximately 0.022 mg/L, indicating a relatively strong antioxidant activity. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 2D-HSQC NMR (heteronuclear single quantum coherence nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy confirmed the successful isolation and preservation of its structural integrity. This study highlights the potential of BSG as a valuable lignocellulosic resource and underscores the effectiveness of acidic NaDESs combined with microwave extraction for lignin recovery. This paper investigates bioethanol production from switchgrass, focusing on enhancement of efficiency through various pretreatment methods and comparing two bioethanol production processes: simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) and separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF). Physical, chemical, and biological pretreatment processes are applied to enhance the breakdown of switchgrass's lignocellulosic structure. Effects of pretreatments, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation on ethanol yield are discussed in detail. The comparative analysis reveals that SSF yields higher ethanol outputs within shorter times by integrating hydrolysis and fermentation into a single process. In contrast, SHF offers more control by separating these stages. The comparative analysis highlights that SSF achieves higher ethanol yields more efficiently, although it might restrict SHF's operational flexibility. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current pretreatments, hydrolysis methods, and fermentation processes in bioethanol production from switchgrass, offering insights into their scalability, economic viability, and potential environmental benefits. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of sorption of Basic Red 46 (BR46) dye by lignocellulosic biomass on the susceptibility of the sorbed waste to anaerobic decomposition by anaerobic digestion. The research material used in the experiment consisted of two types of biomass: stalks with leaves and inflorescences after mowing Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis L.) (GB), and rapeseed hulls (RHs) after oil pressing. During the anaerobic decomposition of RHs, 732.30 NmL/gVS and 646.63 NmL/gVS of methane were obtained from the non-sorbed substrate and the plant material after dye sorption, respectively. Similarly, in the variants using Canadian goldenrod, the production was 220.70 NmL/gVS and 183.20 NmL/gVS. The GB sorbent sorbed 34% more BR46 dye than the RH sorbent, which is likely to have resulted in the accumulation of VFA and contributed to the partial inhibition of methane production. Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) are considered a potent source of prebiotics for humans. The global prebiotic market is expanding in size, was valued at USD 6.05 billion in 2021, and is expected to grow at a 14.9% compound annual growth rate between 2022 and 2030, indicating a huge demand. These XOS are non‐digestible pentose sugar oligomers comprising mainly xylose. Xylose is naturally present in the lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), fruits and vegetables. Apart from the prebiotic effect, these XOS have been reported to reduce blood cholesterol, possess antioxidant effects, increase calcium absorption, reduce colon cancer risk, and benefit diabetic patients. The primary use of XOS is reported in the feed industry followed by health, medical use, food and drinks. LCB mainly contains glucan, xylan and lignin. After glucan, xylan is the second‐highest available sugar on the globe composed of xylose. Therefore, the xylan fraction of LCB has great significance in producing food, feed and energy. Glucan has been exploited for the commercial production of ethanol, xylitol, furfural, hydroxymethyl furfural and glucose. As of now, xylan has limited applications. Therefore, xylan can be exploited to convert to XOS. The production of XOS from LCB fraction not only helps to produce these at a very low price, but also helps in the reduction of greenhouse gases. Its use in food and drinks is increasing as it can be derived from the abundantly and cheaply available LCB. Biopurification system (BPS) or biobeds are low-cost system for decontamination of on-farm generated pesticide waste. A biobed contains a mixture of soil, lignocellulosic biomass and organic matter source (compost/peat) and works on the principal of retention of pesticide in high organic matter matrix and its subsequent degradation by microbes. Bioaugmentation, a green technology, is defined as the improvement of the degradative capacity of biobeds by augmenting specific microorganisms. During last 20 years, several studies have evaluated pesticide degradation in biobeds augmented with bacterial and fungal species and prominent microorganism include genus Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Arthrobacter, Phanerochaete, Stereum, Delftia, Trametes, Streptomyces etc. Degradation of pesticides belonging to major classes have been studied in the bioaugmented biobeds. Studies suggested that some pesticides were degraded faster in the bioaugmented biobeds subject to survival and proliferation of degrading microbe. However, no effect of bioaugmentation was observed on degradation of some pesticides and no clear reason for the same was evident. Bioaugmentation with pesticide degrading microorganisms/consortium in combination with rhizosphere-assisted biodegradation could be an optimal strategy for accelerating the degradation of pesticides in biobeds. Herbivorax saccincola A7 is an anaerobic alkali-thermophilic lignocellulolytic bacterium that possesses a cellulosome and high xylan degradation ability. To understand the expression profile of extracellular enzymes by carbon sources, quantitative real-time PCR was performed on all cellulosomal and non-cellulosomal enzyme genes of H. saccincola A7 using cellulose and xylan as carbon sources. The results confirmed that the scaffolding proteins of H. saccincola A7 were expressed. In general, the cellulosomal genes belonging to the glycoside hydrolase families 9, 10, 11, and 48 were repressed when xylan was the sole carbon source, but these genes were significantly induced in the presence of cellulose. These results indicate that cellulose, not xylan, is a key inducer of cellulosomal genes in H. saccincola A7. The RsgI-like proteins, which regulate a carbohydrate-sensing mechanism in Clostridium thermocellum, were also found to be encoded in the H. saccincola A7 genome. To confirm the regulation by RsgI-like proteins, the relative expression of σI1–σI4 factors was analyzed on both carbon sources. The expression of alternative σI1 and σI2 factors was enhanced by the presence of cellulose. By contrast, the expression of σI3 and σI4 factors was activated by both cellulose and xylan. Taken together, the results reveal that the cellulosomal and non-cellulosomal genes of H. saccincola A7 are regulated through a carbohydrate-sensing mechanism involving anti-σ regulator RsgI-like proteins. Upcycling food waste into PHAs offers a promising solution to reduce environmental impact and generate value-added products for drug delivery, scaffold materials, and tissue engineering. Lignocellulosic food waste requires pretreatment and detoxification, whereas waste cooking oil can be fermented directly to produce PHAs. Cupriavidus necator excels in PHA production from lignocellulosic feedstock, showing tolerance to inhibitors. Pseudomonas spp. stand out for waste cooking oil utilization owing to their capacity for esterase and lipase production, enabling PHA accumulation. Butyl acetate is the optimal solvent for PHA recovery owing to its high yield, purity, and molecular weight, with minimal toxicity. PHAs can be recycled through methods such as extrusion, pyrolysis, gasification, and anaerobic digestion within a closed-loop cycle. This review emphasizes the urgent need for food waste upcycling as a response to the mounting global food waste crisis. Focusing on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) as an alternative to traditional plastics, it examines the potential of various food wastes as feedstock for microbial fermentation and PHA production. The upcycling of food waste including cheese whey, waste cooking oil, coffee waste, and animal fat is an innovative practice for food waste management. This approach not only mitigates environmental impacts but also contributes to sustainable development and economic growth. Downstream processing techniques for PHAs are discussed, highlighting their role in obtaining high-quality materials. Vegetable trimmings can be used to stabilize edible O/W Pickering emulsions. The lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) from the leek trimmings was mechanically treated to produce high-yield lignocellulose micro and nanofibrils (LCF) using a high-pressure homogenizer (HPH). Different O/W phase ratios (20/80, 30/70, and 40/60 wt.%) were studied. The use of the micro/nano cellulosic fibers increased the stabilization of the Pickering emulsions by 30–40%. In all cases, stable emulsions were obtained, with emulsification indexes > 92%. The respective stabilization mechanism was thoroughly analysed from confocal laser scanning, and cryo-scanning electron microscopy, which showed the fibers are not coating the droplets but forming a network that traps the droplets and prevents coalescence. The most stable batch formulations, O/W 30/70 wt.% (LCB 4.2 wt.%) and O/W 40/60 wt.% (LCB 3.6 wt.%), were also studied in continuous mode using NETmix technology. Results show the scale-up feasibility of the production of Pickering emulsions containing LCF. Most significantly, this work proposes a continuous process to produce Pickering emulsions stabilized with a natural biopolymer extracted from leek trimmings, which is suitable to industrial manufacturing processes. Economically feasible ethanol production requires efficient hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass and high–temperature processing to enable simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. During the lignocellulolysic hydrolysate, the yeast must encounter with a multiple of inhibitors such as heat and furfural. To solve this problem, a potential fermentative yeast strain that tolerated simultaneous multistress and enhance ethanol concentration was investigated. Twenty yeast isolates were classified into two major yeast species, namely Pichia kudriavzevii (twelve isolates) and Candida tropicalis (eight isolates). All P. kudriavzevii isolates were able to grow at high temperature (45 °C) and exhibited stress tolerance toward furfural. Among P. kudriavzevii isolates, NUCG–S3 presented the highest specific growth rate under each stress condition of heat and furfural, and multistress. Morphological changes in P. kudriavzevii isolates (NUCG–S2, NUCG–S3, NUKL–P1, NUKL–P3, and NUOR–J1) showed alteration in mean cell length and width compared to the non–stress condition. Ethanol production by glucose was also determined. The yeast strain, NUCG–S3, gave the highest ethanol concentrations at 99.46 ± 0.82, 62.23 ± 0.96, and 65.80 ± 0.62 g/l (P < 0.05) under temperature of 30 °C, 40 °C, and 42 °C, respectively. The tolerant isolated yeast NUCG–S3 achieved ethanol production of 53.58 ± 3.36 and 48.06 ± 3.31 g/l (P < 0.05) in the presence of 15 mM furfural and multistress (42 °C with 15 mM furfural), respectively. Based on the results of the present study, the novel thermos and furfural-tolerant yeast strain P. kudriavzevii NUCG–S3 showed promise as a highly proficient yeast for high–temperature ethanol fermentation. Appropriate stocking density plays an important role in ensuring the stability and improving the overall efficiency of the vermicomposting system. Although some studies have shown that earthworms can degrade lignocellulosic materials, relatively few studies have been conducted on the effect of earthworm stocking density on the degradation of a single green waste (GW) with high lignocellulosic content. Therefore, this study investigated the degradation effect of earthworms on GW at different stocking densities, and assessed the stability and maturity of the whole vermicomposting by comprehensively analysing the changes in physicochemical and biological properties of earthworms during vermicomposting, and by combining the growth of earthworms with a multi-dimensional assessment of the stability and maturity of the whole vermicomposting. In this study, six stocking densities (CK-T5) were set up, namely, no earthworms, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 worms/kg. The results showed that compared with the CK (without earthworms), when there were 30 earthworms per kg of GW (i.e. T3), the total nitrogen, total phosphorus, total potassium, organic matter decomposition, bacterial and fungal numbers, and germination index of earthworm compost products increased by 14 %, 29 %, 32 %, 35 %, 42 %, 94 %, and 125 %, respectively. T3 also enhanced the activities of cellulase and alkaline phosphatase. The results were further supported by principal component analysis. Finally, we conclude that when the stocking density of earthworms is appropriate (T3), it not only favours the growth of earthworms, but also positively affects the physicochemical properties of the vermicomposting process, which in turn significantly improves the biodegradation efficiency of GW. Chemical pretreatment is a common method to enhance the cumulative methane yield (CMY) of lignocellulosic waste (LW) but its effectiveness is subject to various factors, and accurate estimation of methane production of pretreated LW remains a challenge. Here, based on 254 LW samples, a machine learning (ML) model to predict the methane production performance of pretreated feedstock was constructed using two automated ML platforms (tree-based pipeline optimization tool and neural network intelligence). Furthermore, the interactive effects of pretreatment conditions, feedstock properties, and digestion conditions on methane production of pretreated LW were studied through model interpretability analysis. The optimal ML model performed well on the validation set, and the digestion time, pretreatment agent, and lignin content (LC) were found to be key factors affecting the methane production of pretreated LW. If the LC in the raw LW was lower than 15%, the maximum CMY might be achieved using the NaOH, KOH, and alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) with concentrations of 3.8%, 4.4%, and 4.5%, respectively. On the other hand, if LC was higher than 15%, only high concentrations of AHP exceeding 4% could significantly increase methane production. This study provides valuable guidance for optimizing pretreatment process, comparing different chemical pretreatment approaches, and regulating the operation of large-scale biogas plants. Composting presents a viable management solution for lignocellulose-rich municipal solid waste. However, our understanding about the microbial metabolic mechanisms involved in the biodegradation of lignocellulose, particularly in industrial-scale composting plants, remains limited. This study employed metaproteomics to compare the impact of upgrading from aerated static pile (ASP) to agitated bed (AB) systems on physicochemical parameters, lignocellulose biodegradation, and microbial metabolic pathways during large-scale biowaste composting process, marking the first investigation of its kind. The degradation rates of lignocellulose including cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin were significantly higher in AB (8.21%-32.54%, 10.21%-39.41%, and 6.21%-26.78%) than those (5.72%-23.15%, 7.01%-33.26%, and 4.79%-19.76%) in ASP at three thermal stages, respectively. The AB system in comparison to ASP increased the carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) abundance and production of the three essential enzymes required for lignocellulose decomposition involving a mixture of bacteria and fungi (i.e., Actinobacteria, Bacilli, Sordariomycetes and Eurotiomycetes). Conversely, ASP primarily produced exoglucanase and β-glucosidase via fungi (i.e., Ascomycota). Moreover, AB effectively mitigated microbial stress caused by acetic acid accumulation by regulating the key enzymes involved in acetate conversion, including acetyl-coenzyme A synthetase and acetate kinase. Overall, the AB upgraded from ASP facilitated the lignocellulose degradation and fostered more diverse functional microbial communities in large-scale composting. Our findings offer a valuable scientific basis to guide the engineering feasibility and environmental sustainability for large-scale industrial composting plants for treating lignocellulose-rich waste. Enzymatic degradation of biomass is preferred over chemical methods for environmental protection. However, in most cases, a chemical pretreatment is still required to help improve enzyme accessibility of the biomass. Therefore, it is necessary to develop highly efficient enzymes for those reasons and to save costs accordingly. Costs can be further reduced if the enzymes are recycled. XynR8(N58D) is an engineered and highly active xylanase originating from the rumen fungus Neocallimastix patriciarum. In this study, XynR8(N58D) was extracellularly over-expressed by Pichia pastoris. The resulting crude enzyme solution, with a purity of XynR8(N58D) of over 80%, was used to prepare the cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEA) of XynR8(N58D). Specific activity of the crude enzyme solution was 11,599.39 IU/mg, and that of CLEA was 6129.42 IU/mg. The immobilization yield and the immobilization efficiency were 62.68 ± 16.20% and 84.31 ± 3.11%, respectively. The thermostability, stress tolerance, and shelf life of CLEA were significantly better than those of the free enzyme. The free enzyme and CLEA both effectively decomposed insoluble xylan and autoclaved corncob powders. Therefore, XynR8(N58D) made into CLEA not only maintained high activity, but also improved its stability and permitted its reuse or recyclability. Both forms of the enzyme can effectively degrade lignocellulosic biomass without relying on chemical pretreatment to reduce recalcitrance of the biomass structure. Water contamination is a major health issue that can be addressed by using carbonaceous materials to adsorb and filter pollutants, yet adsorption mechanisms need to be better understood to improve the adsorption efficiency. Here we review the models that are used to study the mechanisms of adsorption of drugs, dyes and metal ions on carbonaceous materials, with emphasis on classical and advanced isotherms. We discuss the fitting frequency, lignocellulosic and fossil fuel-derived adsorbents, biomass composition, activating agents, surface functions, the carbonization temperature, the medium temperature effect and the use of several isotherms to explain the same mechanism. The adsorption capacity can reach up to 2651 mg of contaminant per g of lignocellulosic materials and 1274 mg of contaminant per g of fossil materials. Isotherm validation commonly depends on several parameters. The adsorption on lignocellulosic carbonaceous materials is best described by the Langmuir isotherm. In contrast, adsorption on fossil materials is best described by the Redlich-Peterson isotherm. Advanced and classical isotherms are in good agreement in 44% of reports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conventional synthetic sorbents for oil spill cleanup are the most widely employed materials, although a major drawback is the extensive chemical modification that they have undergone, making them economically and environmentally nonsustainable. The use of inexpensive, abundant, nontoxic, biodegradable, and reusable lignocellulosic materials might be an alternative to conventional sorbents, with obvious positive impact on sustainability and circular economy. The present study subsequently utilizes the well‐established process, of converting grape molasses—a byproduct of the winemaking industry that represents a typical and abundant source of biomass—into a laser‐assisted graphene‐like product (LA‐B). Comparative experiments were carried out with two additional materials that are similarly produced by the same laser‐assisted method, yet use synthetic polyimide foil and tape polymers as precursors, namely LA‐F and LA‐T. The results showed that diesel oil adsorption capacity of LA‐B was 33.5 g/g, while the ultraoleophilic LA‐T adsorbed 57 g/g and LA‐F adsorbed 41 g/g. Furthermore, the crude oil uptake was 31.1, 56.0, and 38.6 g/g for LA‐B, LA‐T, and LA‐F, respectively. The adsorption of oil on the used materials could be well‐described by pseudo‐second‐order kinetics, showing that over 80% of oil was removed from the water within 15 min. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forestry residues (FR) and medicinal-aromatic plant waste (MAPW) are considered potential resources for energy recovery. In this context, we explore the bioethanol production potential of three microbial strains Aspergillus niger, Zymomonas mobilis, and Trichoderma longibrachiatum using this lignocellulosic hydrolysate as a substrate. The blend of FR and MAPW was pretreated by different methods like acid sulfuric (AS), steam explosion (SE), and enzymatic (E). The ethanol yield was measured by gas chromatography (GC). Zymomonas mobilis demonstrated the highest ethanol yield of 5.95% on untreated substrate. Conversely, Aspergillus niger exhibited peak performance with an ethanol yield of 10.78% following AS, SE and E combined pretreatment. Trichoderma longibrachiatum, yielded ethanol ranging from 1.27% to 2.47%. Furthermore, the use of immobilized d' Aspergillus niger strains revealed a small decrease in ethanol yield from 11.34% in the first cycle to only 5.02% in the sixth cycle. In conclusion, Aspergillus niger emerges as a promising candidate due to its dual functionality in pretreatment and ethanol fermentation, offering pathways for advancing sustainable biofuel technologies. Globally escalating ethanol demand necessitates the use of hybrid technologies integrating first- and second-generation biofuel feedstocks for achieving the futuristic targets of gasoline replacement with bioethanol. In present study, an optimized two-step sequential pre-treatment (first dilute alkali, then dilute acid) of Pine forest litter (PFL) was developed. Furthermore, the saccharification of pre-treated PFL was optimized through Response Surface Methodology using Box-Behnken Design, wherein 0.558 g/g of reducing sugar was released under the optimized conditions (12.5% w/v of biomass loading, 10 FPU/g of PFL enzyme loading, 0.15% v/v Tween-80 and 48 h incubation time). Moreover, during hydrolysate fermentation using Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCIM 3288 strain, 22.51 ± 1.02 g/L ethanol was produced. Remarkably, hydrophobic resin (XAD-4) treatment of PFL hydrolysate, significantly removed inhibitors (Furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and phenolics) and increased ethanol production to 27.38 ± 1.18 g/L. Furthermore, during fermentation of molasses supplemented PFL hydrolysate (total initial sugar: 100 ± 3.27 g/L), a maximum of 46.02 ± 2.08 g/L ethanol was produced with 0.482 g/g yield and 1.92 g/l/h productivity. These findings indicated that the integration of molasses to lignocellulosic hydrolysate, would be a promising hybrid technology for industrial ethanol production within existing bio-refinery infrastructure. This research involved conducting continuous adsorption experiments to assess fluoride elimination from drinking water achieved by utilizing biocomposites created from the peels of oranges and apples, which were impregnated with zirconium (Zr), to form BOP-Zr and BAP-Zr, respectively. The findings from the experimental data indicate that BOP-Zr and BAP-Zr are effective biosorbents with a solid ability to remove fluoride selectively. Additionally, these biosorbents were found to be stable, as they do not release Zr into the treated water. Notably, these environmentally friendly biosorbents are derived from renewable sources and enhance the value of waste materials. The study employed various empirical models, including Bohart-Adamas, Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, BDST, Clark, Yan, and Woolborska, to elucidate the mechanisms and crucial parameters involved in fluoride adsorption within packed bed columns. The Yan model demonstrated the highest correlation among these models, indicating a chemical adsorption process with kinetics following a pseudo-second-order pattern. BOP-Zr and BAP-Zr exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 59.3 and 47.5 mg/g, respectively, under a flow rate of 4 mL/min and an inlet fluoride concentration of 25 mg/L. The analysis of mass transfer coefficients revealed that the primary step governing the adsorption procedure was diffusion through pores. Consequently, the study conclusively establishes that BOP-Zr and BAP-Zr biocomposites, originating from lignocellulosic biomass remains, present a practical and competitive choice for eliminating fluoride from water. Biowaste management is one of the major concerns for the effective processing of the production of toxic and value-added products. Biowaste is generally either by-products or end products of numerous bioprocess industries, including agriculture, food, dairy, textile, paper, pulp, or biopharma industries. They may not only consist of numerous varieties of toxic substances but also contain the most useful energy sources, especially celluloses, which are abundant energy-rich derivatives from agricultural waste. This biowaste mismanaged, especially in agriculture bases countries like India and Asian countries by either burning or dumping, may cause severe environmental pollution. Microbial degradation of waste will be the best appreciable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly process, and the majority of biowaste can be easily degraded by several microbial communities, and biowaste can be effectively converted into less toxic or nontoxic. Among them, certain bacteria target plant-based celluloses which are acting as the main structural component of the majority parts of plant cells by producing cellulases. As this process results in diverse energy-rich derivatives such as cellobiohydrolase and glucose, further, these can be used for bioethanol production. To hydrolyse the polymeric structure of glucose that is abundant in most plant-based wastes, the enzyme cellulases are the most essential and categorised into four classes:exoglucanase, endoglucanase, cellobiohydrolases, and glucosidases. These will act at different sites of the cellulose for further degradation into glucose, a chief source for bioethanol production. There are numerous natural bacterial communities with higher potentials for the degradation of biowaste, especially cellulosic waste into energy-rich sugars highlighted besides other waste decomposition. It would be a futuristic approach to enhance the catalytic activity of microbial enzymes that convert cellulose into glucose for biofuel production. Similarly, there are other bacteria with protease activity on biowastes like soya, whey, and other food and dairy waste. This study emphasised on a natural isolate with multipotent efficiency in the degradation of numerous waste materials and optimisation for the degradation of numerous raw materials. This attempt will be contributing to the best biowaste utilisation and management of various production of biofuel. This study will emphasise the versatile activities of bacterial enzymes of a novel isolate, Bacillus which can lead to futuristic applications for the conversion of domestic waste into energy sources. The country's first tubular microfiltration membranes for water purification from various contaminants, made from an alternative natural material—wood,—was developed at the Dumansky Institute of Colloid and Water Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The proposed procedure cuts significantly the costs of manufacturing membranes. They studied the main patterns of the defluoridation process of water using these lignocellulosic (wooden) membranes, which were modified with a dynamic layer of hydrophilic A-300 aerosil. The modification of the lignocellulosic membranes involved the preliminary formation of an additional retentive layer on their surface, due to the steric mechanism, in the form of a dynamic membrane. The research demonstrated the high efficiency of the water defluoridation process using a dynamic membrane made of SiO2 particles, which retained fluoride ions (F–) ions due to the electrostatic mechanism of their interaction. Specific conditions for forming the dynamic membrane included concentrations of modifying and membrane-supporting aerosil additives at 500 and 100 mg/dm3, respectively, with an operating pressure of 1.0 MPa and a formation duration of 120 min. The concentration of suspended SiO2 particles in the permeate (turbidity) did not exceed the maximum permissible concentration (0.3 mg/dm3) in water. The modified lignocellulosic membrane could decrease the fluoride concentration in water to the permissible level for drinking water (0.7–1.5 mg/dm3) from an initial concentration of up to 7.5 mg/dm3 and a neutral pH at an operating pressure of 1.0 MPa. Levulinic acid (LA) was produced from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) pretreated in two different ways: (1) a two-step treatment with peracetic acid (PA) and alkaline peroxide (AP); and (2) an ammonia soak pretreatment. The pretreated material was subjected to acid hydrolysis (5% w/v sulfuric acid, 125 °C to 175 °C, 120 min) to produce LA. Compared to the ammonia treatment, the two-step PA–AP pretreatment was better in removing lignin from OPEFB, and resulted in a higher LA yield based on the mass of the pretreated OPEFB. On a mass basis, the LA yield was 31.1% on pretreated OPEFB, that had been pretreated using the PA–AP process, but only 16.7% from the biomass treated using the ammonia process. The kinetics of acid-catalyzed production of LA from the pretreated OPEFB were investigated to develop a mathematical model for predicting the conversion of cellulose to the intermediates (glucose, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural), and the final product, LA. The hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose was found to be the rate-controlling step in acid-catalyzed production of LA, confirming the importance of the delignification pretreatment in making cellulose more amenable to hydrolysis. During the two-stage acid hydrolysis, the reaction at 175 °C for 15 min in the first stage, followed by 125 °C for 105 min in the second stage, resulted in LA molar yield (based on cellulose) of ∼40%. Silicon/carbon (Si/C) composites present great potential as anode materials for rechargeable batteries since the materials integrate the high specific capacity and the preferable cycling stability from Si and C components, respectively. Functional Si/C composites based on lignocellulose have attracted wide attention due to the advantages from lignocellulose, including sustainability property, flexible structural tunability, and diverse physicochemical functionality. Although the flourishing development of rechargeable batteries boosts the studies on lignocellulose‐derived Si/C materials with high electrochemical performance, the publications that comprehensively clarify the design and functionalization of these high‐profile materials are still scarce. Accordingly, this review first systematically summarizes the recent advances in the structural design of lignocellulose‐derived Si/C composites after a brief clarification about the Si selection sources based on self and extraneous sources. Afterward, the functionalization strategies, including nanosizing, porosification, and magnesiothermic reduction of Si material as well as heteroatom modification of C material, are specifically highlighted. Besides, the applications of lignocellulose‐derived Si/C‐based materials in rechargeable batteries are elaborated. Finally, this review discusses the challenges and prospects of the application of lignocellulose‐derived Si/C composites for energy storage and provides a nuanced viewpoint regarding this topic. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION Various agricultural sidestreams have been demonstrated as feedstock to produce cellulose. To the best of our knowledge, there is no research work on the potential of agricultural sidestream from cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), a neglected and underutilised crop to produce cellulose fibres. Conventional methods to produce cellulose consume large amounts of chemicals (NaOH) and produce a high amount of effluent waste. Herein, we investigated extrusion pre‐treatment without and with an alkali followed by bleaching as an alternative method to conventional alkaline pre‐treatment followed by bleaching to produce cellulose fibres from cowpea sidestream.Cellulose extracted by extrusion without and with mild alkali followed by bleaching consumed about 20 times less NaOH compared to the conventional method and produced less effluent waste. Extrusion with mild alkali followed by bleaching resulted in higher cellulose yield, purity, and crystallinity compared to extrusion without an alkali followed by bleaching. However, the conventional method resulted in higher cellulose yield, purity and crystallinity compared to extrusion pre‐treatment followed by bleaching. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that micro‐sized cellulose fibres with an average diameter of 10–15 μm were extracted using both methods. Notably, cellulose fibres extracted using extrusion pre‐treatment were shorter than those extracted using the conventional method.Extrusion pre‐treatment is a promising continuous alternative to alkaline pre‐treatment to produce micro‐sized cellulose fibres from low‐value, underutilised cowpea lignocellulosic sidestream, for potential use as a filler in composite plastics. © 2024 The Author(s). Hydrothermal pretreatments are commonly employed prior to the biotechnological conversion of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) into value-added products, such as fuels and chemicals. However, the by-products of this pretreatment, including furaldehydes, lignin-derived phenolics, and carboxylic acids, can inhibit the enzymes and microbes used in the biotechnological process. In this study, LCB degrading enzymes of endophytic and litter fungi were screened for their tolerance to potential pretreatment-derived inhibitors. Several fungi produced endo- and exoglucanases that remained functional in the presence of lignocellulose-derived phenolics. Some were also active in the presence of tannic acid. Additionally, thermostable endoglucanase activity was observed in some fungi. The ability of some of these fungi to utilize furaldehyde inhibitors as a sole carbon source was also noted. The culture supernatants of the fungal strains were tested in hydrolysis experiments using microcrystalline cellulose as a substrate, in the presence of lignocellulose phenolics and tannic acid. With some strains, higher sugar yields were obtained in the hydrolysis of cellulose when phenolics were added. Our results highlight the need for more intensive exploration of endophytic and plant litter fungi for novel inhibitor-resistant cellulases for biofuel production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Utilization of lignocellulosic biomass as a renewable resource to produce liquid fuels/fuel additives and commodity chemicals offer solutions to minimize the exhaustion of nonrenewable carbon‐based fossil resources and mitigate environmental problems. Cellulose and hemicellulose derived from lignocellulose can be converted into several important platform molecules like glucose, fructose, xylose, 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, levulinic acid, etc. which subsequently can be transformed into fuels/fuel additives and value‐added chemicals using heterogeneous catalytic processes. Aluminophosphates (AlPO‐n) are zeotype materials with tunable physicochemical properties like acidity and porosity, and this have promoted their wide use as versatile catalysts for several acid‐catalyzed reactions, including hydrolysis, dehydration, isomerization, transfer hydrogenation, reductive etherification, acetalization and aldol condensation. This review summarizes the design and synthetic advances of AlPO‐n catalysts as well as their application in the valorization of lignocellulose and derivatives to platform chemicals and fuel compounds. Dry anaerobic digestion (dry-AD) is an attractive process for solid wastes such as agri-food waste. However, some limitations mainly associated to lack of effective mixing, can hinder the methane production capacity of the systems. Bulking agent (BA) has been proposed as a solution to the compaction issues in systems without mechanical agitation, such as leaching bed reactors. However, effects of BA are still not clear, and, thus, the factors to consider for its dose has not been optimized yet. This work studies the effect of BA in dry-AD. Two substrates with different characteristics were proposed as models, bean peel as a lignocellulosic substrate and a mixture of food waste as a readily biodegradable substrate. Inert plastic rings were used as BA at different BA:S ratios. Assessed BA:S ratio did not affect the performance of methane production for the lignocellulosic waste, but it did significantly affect to the easily biodegradable substrate, showing up to a 28% of methane production increase. This result could be due to the presence of lignocellulosic compounds in the bean peel, behaving like a natural BA. In assays with an increased bed height, the compaction of the system was more severe, resulting in the rapid acidification of the processes. At these conditions, the positive effect of BA addition was more marked, allowing methane production and no acidification of the system. Thus, the addition of BA is a suitable strategy for improving methane production or stability in dry-AD systems without requiring the stirring of the systems. • Bulking agent (BA) addition is assessed as alternative to stirring in dry AD. • Positive effects by BA was due to an increase of the porosity in the digester bed. • Optimal BA:S ratio was strongly dependent on the characteristics of the substrate. • Low lignocellulosic content substrates were more favoured by BA addition. • BA addition was able to avoid acidification by enhancing the methanogenic activity. The valorization of lignocellulosic biomass, derived from various bio-waste materials, has received considerable attention as a sustainable approach to improve production chains while reducing environmental impact. Microbial enzymes have emerged as key players in the degradation of polysaccharides, offering versatile applications in biotechnology and industry. Among these enzymes, glycoside hydrolases (GHs) play a central role. Xylanases, in particular, are used in a wide range of applications and are essential for the production of xylose, which can be fermented into bioethanol or find use in many other industries. Currently, fungal secretomes dominate as the main reservoir of lignocellulolytic enzymes, but thermophilic microorganisms offer notable advantages in terms of enzyme stability and production efficiency. Here we present the genomic characterization of Geobacillus stearothermophilus GF16 to identify genes encoding putative enzymes involved in lignocellulose degradation. Thermostable GHs secreted by G. stearothermophilus GF16 were investigated and found to be active on different natural polysaccharides and synthetic substrates, revealing an array of inducible GH activities. In particular, the concentrated secretome possesses significant thermostable xylanase and β-xylosidase activities (5 ×103 U/L and 1.7 ×105 U/L, respectively), highlighting its potential for application in biomass valorization. We assessed the hemicellulose hydrolysis capabilities of various agri-food wastes using the concentrated secretome of the strain cultivated on xylan. An impressive 300-fold increase in xylose release compared to a commercially available cocktail was obtained with the secretome, underscoring the remarkable efficacy of this approach. Background: The ability of lignocellulose degradation for filamentous fungi is always attributed to their efficient CAZymes system with broader applications in bioenergy development. ADP-ribosylation factor GTPase-activating proteins (Arf-GAPs), pivotal in fungal morphogenesis, lack comprehensive studies on their regulatory mechanisms in lignocellulose utilization. Results: Here, the orthologs (TgGlo3 and TgGcs1) of Arf-GAPs in S. cerevisiae were characterized in Trichoderma guizhouense NJAU4742. The results indicated that overexpression of Tggcs1 (OE-Tggcs1) enhanced the lignocellulose utilization, whereas increased expression of Tgglo3 (OE-Tgglo3) elicited antithetical responses. On the fourth day of fermentation with rice straw as the sole carbon source, the activities of endoglucanase, cellobiohydrolase, xylanase, and filter paper of the wild-type strain (WT) reached 8.20 U mL−1, 4.42 U mL−1, 14.10 U mL−1, and 3.56 U mL−1, respectively. Compared to WT, the four enzymes activities of OE-Tggcs1 increased by 7.93%, 6.11%, 9.08%, and 12.92%, respectively, while those decreased to varying degrees of OE-Tgglo3. During the nutritional growth, OE-Tgglo3 resulted in the hyphal morphology characterized by sparsity and constriction, while OE-Tggcs1 led to a notable increase in vacuole volume. In addition, OE-Tggcs1 exhibited higher transport efficiencies for glucose and cellobiose thereby sustaining robust cellular metabolic rates. Further investigations revealed that Tgglo3 and Tggcs1 differentially regulated the transcription level of a dynamin-like GTPase gene (Tggtp), eliciting distinct redox states and apoptotic reaction, thus orchestrating the cellular response to lignocellulose utilization. Conclusions: Overall, these findings underscored the significance of TgArf-GAPs as pivotal regulators in lignocellulose utilization and provided initial insights into their differential modulation of downstream targets. The use of lignocellulosic biomass to create natural flavor has drawn attention from researchers. A key flavoring ingredient that is frequently utilized in the food industry is vanillin. In this present study, Pediococcus acidilactici PA VIT effectively involved in the production of bio-vanillin by using Ferulic acid as an intermediate with a yield of 11.43 µg/mL. The bio-vanillin produced by Pediococcus acidilactici PA VIT was examined using FTIR, XRD, HPLC, and SEM techniques. These characterizations exhibited a unique fingerprinting signature like that of standard vanillin. Additionally, the one variable at a time method, placket Burmann method, and response surface approach, were employed to optimize bio-vanillin. Based on the central composite rotary design, the most important process factors were determined such as agitation speed, substrate concentration, and inoculum size. After optimization, bio-vanillin was found to have tenfold increase, with a maximum yield of 376.4 µg/mL obtained using the response surface approach. The kinetic study was performed to analyze rate of reaction and effect of metal ions in the production of bio-vanillin showing Km of 10.25, and Vmax of 1250 were required for the reaction. The metal ions that enhance the yield of bio-vanillin are Ca2+, k+, and Mg2+ and the metal ions that affects the yield of bio-vanillin are Pb+ and Cr+ were identified from the effect of metal ions in the bio-vanillin production. • Identification and characterization of Pediococcus Acidilactici capable of catalyzing the production of bio vanillin. • Optimization of fermentation conditions to enhance the biotransformation efficiency and yield of vanillin. • Evaluating bio-vanillin produced through biotransformation, demonstrating its suitability for various applications. • A detailed kinetic study, shedding light on the reaction rates involved in the process of bio vanillin production. Enzymatic hydrolysis contributes to obtaining fermentable sugars using pretreated lignocellulose materials for bioethanol generation. Unfortunately, the pretreatment of lignocellulose causes low substrate enzymatic hydrolysis, which is due to the structure changes of lignin to produce main phenolic by-products and non-productive cellulase adsorption. It is reported that modified lignin enhances the speed of enzymatic hydrolysis through single means to decrease the negative effects of fermentation inhibitors or non-productive cellulase adsorption. However, a suitable modified lignin should be selected to simultaneously reduce the fermentation inhibitors concentration and non-productive cellulase adsorption for saving resources and maximizing the enzymatic hydrolysis productivity. Meanwhile, the adsorption micro-mechanisms of modified lignin with fermentation inhibitors and cellulase remain elusive. In this review, different pretreatment effects toward lignin structure, and their impacts on subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis are analyzed. The main modification methods for lignin are presented. Density functional theory is used to screen suitable modification methods for the simultaneous reduction of fermentation inhibitors and non-productive cellulase adsorption. Lignin-fermentation inhibitors and lignin-cellulase interaction mechanisms are discussed using different advanced analysis techniques. This article addresses the gap in previous reviews concerning the application of modified lignin in the enhancement of bioethanol production. For the first time, based on existing studies, this work posits the hypothesis of applying theoretical simulations to screen efficient modified lignin-based adsorbents, in order to achieve a dual optimization of the detoxification and saccharification processes. One method of preparing sludge for management and use is solar drying. To intensify the drying process, natural lignocellulosic additives can be used to alter the structure of the sludge and accelerate water evaporation. Light, hard materials with low absorption capacity are best suited for this purpose, e.g., walnut shells, which are unused waste. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of the evaluation of walnut shells on the sludge drying process and to assess the impact of the drying process on the chemical, physical, and fuel properties of the additive. The moisture content, crushing strength, chemical composition, and physical and fuel properties of mixtures were determined. A small addition of walnut shells (25%) was found to accelerate the drying process even in winter and spring (up to 30 days) compared to sludge without additives. Walnut shells retain their chemical composition and strength despite unfavourable conditions and a chemically aggressive environment, indicating they may be reused. The mixture containing sewage sludge and walnut shells has a calorific value of 15.6 MJ/kg, which is similar to wood; it is also fully biodegradable and suitable as a fertiliser to improve soil structure, as it contains approx. 80–90% DM (including approx. 40% carbon, 3% nitrogen, and other elements, such as phosphorus and potassium.) This review analyzes in detail the topic of supercapacitors based on biochar technologies, including their advantages, disadvantages, and development potential. The main topic is the formation of precursors in the process of pyrolysis and activation, and the possibility of the application of biochar itself in various fields is brought closer. The structure, division, and principle of operation of supercondensates are discussed, where their good and bad sides are pointed out. The current state of the scientific and legal knowledge on the topic of biocarbon and its applications is verified, and the results of many authors are compared to examine the current level of the research on supercapacitors based on biochar electrodes created from lignocellulosic biomass. Current application sites for supercapacitors in transportation, electronics, and power generation (conventional and unconventional) are also examined, as is the potential for further development of the technology under discussion. The use of food‐based biomass and arable land for bio‐oil and biofuel production could compromise global food security. Therefore, renewable and environmentally friendly oils for biofuels from oleaginous microorganisms such as yeasts and microalgae (heterotrophic and mixotrophic) are gaining interest within the scientific community. These microorganisms have shorter cultivation times and higher lipid productivity when compared to higher plants/food crops/autotrophic microorganisms. Despite many advantages, the high carbon requirements and production cost are limiting factors that hinder their deployment at a commercial scale. Lignocellulosic waste substrates are abundant and inexpensive materials that are rich in organic carbon in the form of cellulose and hemicellulose, which release bioavailable forms of sugars upon hydrolysis. Recent studies have shown the tremendous potential of the hydrolysates of these substrates to be utilized as carbon sources for biomass production and the accumulation of lipids in oleaginous hetero‐/mixotrophic microorganisms. Therefore, this review highlights the potential use of lignocellulosic biomass as a low‐cost carbon substrate for the cultivation of hetero‐/mixotrophic microalgae and yeast for microbial oil production for commercial applications. This work explored whether partial cellulose bioconversion with fungal mycelium can improve the properties of cellulose fibre-based materials. We demonstrate an efficient approach for producing cellulose-mycelium composites utilizing several cellulosic matrices and show that these materials can match fossil-derived polymeric foams on water contact angle, compression strength, thermal conductivity, and exhibit selective antimicrobial properties. Fossil-based polymeric foams commonly used for these applications are highly carbon positive, persist in soils and water, and are challenging to recycle. Bio-based alternatives to synthetic polymers could reduce GHG emissions, store carbon, and decrease plastic pollution. We explored several fungal species for the biofabrication of three kinds of cellulosic-mycelium composites and characterized the resulting materials for density, microstructure, compression strength, thermal conductivity, water contact angle, and antimicrobial properties. Foamed mycelium-cellulose samples had low densities (0.058 – 0.077 g/cm3), low thermal conductivity (0.03 – 0.06 W/m∙K at + 10 °C), and high water contact angle (118 – 140°). The recovery from compression of all samples was not affected by the mycelium addition and varied between 70 and 85%. In addition, an antiviral property against active MS-2 viruses was observed. These findings show that the biofabrication process using mycelium can provide water repellency and antiviral properties to cellulose foam materials while retaining their low density and good thermal insulation properties.
