Our study investigates language processing in mono- and multilingual settings, focusing on language dynamics in heritage Russian against the background of baseline Russian. In this context, we explore bi-aspectual verbs as an unstable part of Russian grammar. As verbs without morphologically marked expression of aspectual contrasts, bi-aspectual verbs represent a special case within Russian aspectual morphology and demonstrate significant variations in their monolingual use. Our study examines the use of bi-aspectual verbs in heritage Russian acquired as a home language in a multilingual environment in families with migrant background. In contrast to monolingual speakers, heritage speakers operate with polylingual variation, which can comprise single varieties within the same language or even two or more typologically different languages. These language variation mechanisms in heritage speakers represent notable specifics of their language use and the special dynamics of heritage Russian. Therefore, when comparing the use of a dynamic part of the language system, we aim to shed light on the analogous vs specific language processing in baseline and heritage Russian. Based on the elaborated production data, we test the use of ten bi-aspectual verbs in heritage speakers (N = 30) with high proficiency in Russian. The control group of the study was composed of monolingual Russian respondents (N = 30). By examining the use of bi-aspectual verbs in monolingual (baseline Russian) and bilingual (migrant heritage Russian) speakers, we focus on the question of the extent to which language dynamics in the core domains of the language system are either similar or dissimilar in heritage vs baseline language. The vertical structure of the tropical cyclone (TC) vortex can be quantified throughout the TC life cycle via the dynamic height of the vortex (DHOV) metric, which is sensitive to the rate of decay of the tangential wind field with height. Observed storms always possessed a high DHOV value prior to periods of rapid intensification (RI). When limited to vertically‐aligned TCs where the low‐ to mid‐level vortex tilt magnitude is small, all DHOV values are found to be large enough for RI. Vortex tilt results from environmental vertical wind shear (VWS) and a similar relationship is found in an ensemble of TCs simulated in a moderate shear environment. Once vortex tilt decreases, both the observed and ensemble TCs exhibit a concurrent increase of DHOV and intensity, indicating the metric provides useful information about changing vertical structure in both tilted and aligned TCs. The growth of DHOV during RI is closely coupled with a strengthening warm core at the upper levels. A simulation with an upper‐level jet of VWS is used to better understand the importance of the upper levels during RI by disrupting vortex development there. DHOV and intensity of the TC are effectively capped in the jet simulation relative to its counterpart in a control simulation, indicating shear can limit TC height without appreciable low‐ to mid‐level tilt. Differences in kinematic and thermal structure between the jet and control runs are found from 12‐ to 16‐km altitude, suggesting the importance of warming near the tropopause in powerful TCs. Plain Language Summary: Changes in the vertical structure of the tropical cyclone (TC) wind field are important during rapid intensification (RI). Vertical wind shear (VWS), or the changes in the magnitude and direction of environmental winds with height, can tilt the TC with respect to height and cause winds averaged around the TC center to decay rapidly with height. When tilt is minimized in a TC, the winds are strong enough at higher levels to facilitate RI. During RI, the wind field continues to expand vertically and the resulting decreased decay with height depends on warming in the upper levels of the troposphere. A metric for vertical structure evaluated in observations and numerical models in this study changes in response to both the tilting of the vortex and its aligned vertical growth. Continued study of TC vertical structure is helpful in understanding how TCs grow strong and how strong they can become. Gender‐science stereotypes emerge early in childhood, but little is known about the developmental processes by which they arise. The present study tested the hypothesis that language implying scientists are a special and distinct kind of person contributes to the development of gender‐science stereotypes, even when it does not communicate stereotypic content. One cross‐sectional and two longitudinal studies with racially and geographically diverse children (primarily from the United States; ages 4–5; N = 872, tested 2020–2022) revealed that gender stereotypes about science versus art (a) emerge before elementary school, (b) arise from commonplace identity‐emphasizing language, especially among girls, and (c) can be durably disrupted by subtle changes to language. Understanding the impact of digital platforms on user behavior presents foundational challenges, including issues related to polarization, misinformation dynamics, and variation in news consumption. Comparative analyses across platforms and over different years can provide critical insights into these phenomena. This study investigates the linguistic characteristics of user comments over 34 y, focusing on their complexity and temporal shifts. Using a dataset of approximately 300 million English comments from eight diverse platforms and topics, we examine user communications' vocabulary size and linguistic richness and their evolution over time. Our findings reveal consistent patterns of complexity across social media platforms and topics, characterized by a nearly universal reduction in text length, diminished lexical richness, and decreased repetitiveness. Despite these trends, users consistently introduce new words into their comments at a nearly constant rate. This analysis underscores that platforms only partially influence the complexity of user comments but, instead, it reflects a broader pattern of linguistic change driven by social triggers, suggesting intrinsic tendencies in users' online interactions comparable to historically recognized linguistic hybridization and contamination processes. We attempt to further our understanding of the beginnings of language change by analyzing a semantic innovation in Multicultural London English: the use of still as a discourse-pragmatic item in utterance-final position. We show that the change follows well-attested processes of semantic change, so it could have occurred at any time and amongst any group of speakers. Its emergence now, amongst young men in inner city London, can be explained by considering not only well-known external factors such as population change but also by analyzing the interactional contexts in which the new meaning emerges and by relating this to the local peer group culture. In this way we gain insights into how speakers can be motivated to use a form with a new meaning during interactional moves that are especially important for them in their everyday lives. Many scholars consider clause-final adverbs (CFAs) like already, also, and only to be a prominent feature of Colloquial Singapore English (CSE), but little is known about their use in present-day CSE. Using data from the Corpus of Singapore English Messages (CoSEM), we investigate patterns of variation involving CFAs and examine whether they are sensitive to factors such as speaker age and gender. We find that clause-final already and only has increased over time, while clause-final also has remained stable. Overall, the results suggest that CFAs are a stable feature of CSE. Variation in the use of CFAs is conditioned by semantic function, age, and gender. Specifically, clause-final already is associated with the inceptive function. Clause-final already and also are more likely to be used by younger speakers, while clause-final also and only are more likely to be used by males and in all-male conversational settings respectively. We suggest that these patterns are due to present-day English-Mandarin bilingualism, increasingly positive attitudes toward CSE, and National Service for males. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ancient oasis of Turfan, located on the Northern Silk Road, was a centre for interactions between the East and the West and witnessed numerous cultural, religious, and linguistic changes throughout history. A large number of texts were composed, translated, copied, and published there. One of the outcomes of these efforts is the Old Uyghur Buddhist narrative literature, parts of which have remained almost completely preserved, while a significant portion has survived as single fragments or small pieces of a fragment. For some of these texts, definitive conclusions about their original content or which work they belong to have yet to be reached. The Old Uyghur Bāvari narrative discussed in this study bears parallels, particularly in terms of themes, settings, and characters, with sections of the Pārāyaṇasūtra—known for its resemblance to the final chapter of the Sutta Nipāta, i.e., the Pārāyanavagga—as well as parts of the Maitreyasamitināṭaka and Xianyujing. This study first introduces this narrative formed by the Old Uyghur fragments preserved in the Turfan Collection of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. From a political perspective, 1928 marks the beginning of a new period in the history of democracy in the U.K., this being when universal full suffrage was achieved via the Representation of the People Act. Taking into consideration this and other social and political factors, the main aim of the present paper is to investigate how the process of democratisation influenced the language employed by Members of Parliament between 1930 and 2005. For this purpose, we examine the use of markers of authority and power. Specifically, the evolution and use of gender-neutral occupational titles are analysed. Physiological examinations of trans individuals reveal that their bodies over time align to correspond with their gender identity and shift away from the parameters associated with gender assigned at birth. Considering this, the present study looks at language production of transgender scientists to determine if their language changes along with their physiology. The investigation centers on one aspect of scientific trans discourse—that is the frequency of female language. It was expected that those scientists who transitioned from male to female would use female language more frequently after the transition, and those who transitioned from female to male would exhibit fewer instances of female language. However, the opposite appears to be true. According to the evidence collected from 10 professional scientific articles, the frequency of female language goes up for those scientists transitioning from female to male and goes down for those who transition from male to female. It is generally assumed that verbal communication can articulate concepts like 'fact' and 'truth' accurately. However, language is fundamentally inaccurate and ambiguous and it is not possible to express exact propositions accurately in an ambiguous medium. Whether truth exists or not, language cannot express it in any exact way. A major problem for verbal communication is that words are fundamentally differently interpreted by the sender and the receiver. In addition, intrapersonal verbal communication - the voice in our head - is a useless extension to the thought process and results in misunderstanding our own thoughts. The evolvement of language has had a profound impact on human life. Most consequential has been that it allowed people to question the old human rules of behavior - the pre-language way of living. As language could not accurately express the old rules, they lost their authority and disappeared. A long period without any rules of how to live together must have followed, probably accompanied by complete chaos. Later, new rules were devised in language, but the new rules were also questioned and had to be enforced by punishment. Language changed the peaceful human way of living under the old rules into violent and aggressive forms of living under punitive control. Religion then tried to incorporate the old rules into the harsh verbal world. The rules were expressed in language through parables: imaginary beings - the gods - who possessed the power of the old rules, but who could be related to through their human appearance and behavior. Aims and Objectives/Purposes/Research Questions: Studies on incomplete first language (L1) acquisition emphasize restricted input, the low prestige of heritage/immigrant/minority languages, and age of acquisition as significant factors contributing to changes in L1. However, it is not always clear whether it is possible to distinguish results of incomplete acquisition and contact-induced language change. This article deals with two Yiddish–Lithuanian bilinguals who acquired both languages at home (recorded in 2010 and 2011). The focus of the article is the absence of the Yiddish past tense auxiliary in both informants and the replacement of Yiddish discourse-pragmatic words by their Lithuanian or English equivalents in the speech of the second informant. Design/Methodology/Approach: Qualitative analysis of the speech of two Yiddish–Lithuanian bilinguals. Data and Analysis: Two sets of recordings analyzed for the past tense use and other features mentioned in Yiddish attrition studies. Findings/Conclusions: Restricted input is to be considered as a factor in any case. However, it is argued that phenomena reported in the heritage language literature are often the same as in the contact linguistic literature: impact on non-core morphosyntax, prosody, and word order are usually mentioned as primary candidates of contact-induced structural change. Based on purely linguistic phenomena, it is not possible to distinguish between the results of acquisition under the conditions of limited input and in other contact situations where limited input is not necessarily the case. Many features of the informants' Yiddish are a result of Lithuanian impact. Originality: Yiddish–Lithuanian early bilingualism is extremely rare nowadays. The data and analysis contribute to a general understanding of the interplay between contact-induced language change and limited input. Significance/Implications: Unlike what is often presumed, it is not always possible to make comparisons to monolinguals or balanced bilinguals because monolingual speakers of Yiddish do not exist. The rise of emojis has piqued the interest of many scholars over the past few decades, as is evident by a growing body of emoji literature within various fields. This study adopted a qualitative ethnographic approach to explore the pragmatic functions of emojis in the tweets of 15 female undergraduate and graduate EFL students. The focus was on the roles emojis occupied relative to speech acts, identity representation, and language change. Semi-structured interviews and non-participant observations were used as data collection methods while reflexive thematic analysis followed for the analysis. There were six pragmatic functions of emojis, namely expressing emotions, making meaning, mirroring personal beliefs, signaling familiarity, decorating the tweet, and substituting nonverbal cues. Additionally, emojis mitigated speech acts: They were chiefly used to emphasize expressives, but also to soften directives and accompany representatives and commissives. Such emojis represented the participants' identity, yet the participants' personalities and societal roles were rarely represented by these emojis due to personal preferences. This article deals with the learning practices that Portuguese- and French-speaking members of the Jesuit order applied in the two Romance colonies of India and New France to learn local languages for missionary purposes in the 16th–18th centuries. The study is based on an interdisciplinary and process-oriented holistic approach to dealing with sources from these two different contexts and allows for a better understanding of the order's practices in learning, documenting and passing on local languages within the order and beyond. Starting with examining the preparatory phase in Europe, we focus on the Jesuits' language learning experience, their practices in the field and their attempts and difficulties in describing and documenting local languages against the backdrop of European languages and existing and changing language attitudes. Furthermore, we focus on the Jesuits' goal of transferring their knowledge within diverse networks and try to provide an outlook on a more holistic way of dealing with sources from missionary contexts. Distinct rhetoric and approaches are used to communicate the facts and possibilities of the climate crisis and energy transitions. To better understand climate and energy-related communication practices and objectives at the national level, this research applies grounded theory analysis to transcripts of semi-structured interviews with intermediaries in Spain. The intermediaries interviewed include researchers, engineers, professionals with energy-related roles in government, and coordinators of electricity cooperatives. Our analysis produced two overarching results: (1) communication is seen as a means to raise awareness, change behavior, and engage the public, and each of these means is seen as a method to empower citizens; (2) the language of systemic change is used broadly to refer to changing political, economic, or technological systems; however, some systemic changes seem incomplete or incompatible with other systems. Further research is required to test these hypotheses and show how distinct communication approaches might be reconciled in energy transition policy and initiatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Language prior is a major block to improving the generalization of visual question answering (VQA) models. Recent work has revealed that synthesizing extra training samples to balance training sets is a promising way to alleviate language priors. However, most existing methods synthesize extra samples in a manner independent of training processes, which neglect the fact that the language priors memorized by VQA models are changing during training, resulting in insufficient synthesized samples. In this article, we propose an adversarial sample synthesis method, which synthesizes different adversarial samples by adversarial masking at different training epochs to cope with the changing memorized language priors. The basic idea behind our method is to use adversarial masking to synthesize adversarial samples that will cause the model to make wrong answers. To this end, we design a generative module to carry out adversarial masking by attacking the VQA model and introduce a bias-oriented objective to supervise the training of the generative module. We couple the sample synthesis with the training process of the VQA model, which ensures that the synthesized samples at different training epochs are beneficial to the VQA model. We incorporated the proposed method into three VQA models including UpDn, LMH, and LXMERT and conducted experiments on three datasets including VQA-CP v1, VQA-CP v2, and VQA v2. Experimental results demonstrate that a large improvement of our method, such as 16.22% gains on LXMERT in the overall accuracy of VQA-CP v2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low transitive constructions are ubiquitous in English conversation and as such can be considered "typical" clauses. This article furthers this claim by showing that these constructions are also most frequent in a different genre: arguments between participants at organized protests. It has been argued that one reason these constructions are so frequent is that they function to display participants' stances. Arguments are a type of interaction where stance displays abound. In fact, they are defined as sequences of utterances that display opposing stances. Thus, the study goes on to examine how the most frequent of the low transitive constructions in the data—clauses with the nonverbal predicate be—function to display opposition across utterances. Du Bois has analyzed stance as resonance across utterances, created from structural parallelism, and he argues that slight changes between linguistic forms can create differing focal points that index contrasts. This framework is used to analyze how participants use the multiple semantic functions of be clauses across interactional sequences to display and modify their stances in response to their opponent. It is suggested that the versatility and ambiguity of be clauses are especially useful in arguments where participants do not share a set of common beliefs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

All languages exhibit basic colour terms that manifest how distinct linguistic systems categorise colour. Māori, the language of the indigenous people of New Zealand, demonstrates an instructive case where drastic innovations in colour terminology took place in response to environmental and cultural influences. We demonstrate how and when Māori accrued new colour terms to replace existing ones in its immediate ancestor, Proto-Eastern-Polynesian, and eventually coined new colour terms through borrowing from native words for nature to match the English colour categories that did not previously exist in Māori – except for the colour pink. While contemporary Māori is at the same stage as English (Stage VII) in Berlin and Kay’s colour term hierarchy, the evidence is that Māori was at Stage IV pre-colonisation, possessing only five native colour categories. The evolution of Māori’s colour categories thus illuminates how colonisation may impact the basic vocabulary of a language, both in the Māori settling a new land in the 13th century and in their subsequent language contact with English colonisers in the 19th century. ABSTRACT Aim Methods Results Conclusion Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT) is a form of person‐centred psychotherapy that promotes recovery‐oriented outcomes by targeting metacognitive capacity. Previous research has shown the feasibility and clinical benefits of MERIT. However, it is not clear whether and how the specific processes targeted by MERIT (e.g., improved sense of agency, self‐reflectivity, awareness of others, etc.) are manifested in the patient‐therapist communications. In this study, we used natural language processing (NLP) to explore objective linguistic markers of change during MERIT for early psychosis.Five patients underwent 24 sessions each of MERIT, which were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcripts underwent NLP to determine the patterns of pronoun use and the frequency of semantic categories related to temporality and mental processing. Mixed linear regressions were used to examine how NLP features evolve over the course of psychotherapeutic sessions.Analyses detected shifts in specific language signals over time including (1) changes in patterns of pronoun usage with more active and central first‐person plural pronoun (We); (2) transition in temporal focus of speech from past‐focus towards present‐ and future‐focus and (3) increased words representing perceptual and cognitive processes.Our findings suggest NLP can objectively quantify meaningful signals consistent with expected subjective changes in MERIT and potentially other psychotherapeutic interventions. Based on original ethnographic and ethnobotanical research, we share how in the cosmology of Tanna, an island in Vanuatu's southernmost province of Tafea, the Sun is viewed as a living, interactive being. Our initial interviews explored knowledge and beliefs concerning individual plant species, then subsequent follow-up interviews further explored topics that emerged therefrom. The results of these interviews are a series of oral narratives of the mytho-historical past involving the Sun, and the description of contemporary practices which are influenced by the Sun. In traditional narratives, the Sun is both a creative and destructive force which is sometimes viewed as an active, personified character, and in other circumstances appears as an instrument created and utilized by greater powers. People from Tanna recount—and we adopt as a hypothesis—that the Sun's physical manifestation and role in the world has changed since the earliest days of its mythological creation, and that it remains an active player in Tanna's biocultural landscape within practices including time-reckoning, agriculture, and architecture. Through its relationships with humans and non-humans alike, the Sun ultimately shapes the cultural practices and even the landscape of Tanna. The nature of these relationships is changing as linguistic and cultural practices shift alongside people's relationship with the land, but the Sun remains a critical factor in lives and livelihoods of Tanna today. This paper explores the mechanisms of and motivations for two unconventional comparative constructions in Mandarin: [bi Ni hai Ni] and [bi Ni hai Nj]. They are unconventional in that the item expressing the dimension along which the comparison is made is a noun rather than an adjective. It is shown that [bi Ni hai Ni] emerges (i) by analogy with the conventional comparative construction [bi N hai A] and (ii) by inheriting the nominal feature from an existing construction [Adverb N], which is corroborated by a collexeme analysis. At a more schematic level, the extension A > N observed in [bi N hai A] > [bi Ni hai Ni] may have been modeled on the existing development from [Adverb A] to [Adverb N]. Analogical extension and inheritance also underlie the subsequent development from [bi Ni hai Ni] to [bi Ni hai Nj]. This study not only shows how language changes in a constructional network (including node creation and network reconfiguration), but also sheds light on the nature of horizontal links. Mandarin numeral phrases display two characteristics. First, the numeral yi 'one' differs from other numerals in many respects. Second, classifiers can appear without any overt numerals, resulting in Cl-N phrases (e.g., ben shu 'one book'): Cl-N phrases, like numeral phrases with yi 'one' (e.g., yi-ben shu 'one book'), always denote singularity, but also contrast with numeral phrases with yi 'one' in various respects like scope. This study investigates the impact of English-language periodicals in the Ottoman Empire from the mid-19th to early 20th centuries, offering an overview of their inception, development, varied content, and strategies for engaging readers amidst commercial considerations. Focusing on periodicals from Constantinople, this study underscores their distinct contributions to the media landscape, illuminating the period's sociocultural, political, and linguistic changes. The research draws upon primary sources, including periodicals, memoirs, and archival documents, to enhance understanding of the role played by these periodicals in shaping the region's media outlet, public opinion, and cultural and linguistic identity. Overall, the study uncovers a new overview of a transformative period in Ottoman history, emphasizing the enduring influence of English-language periodicals on the region's press industry and highlighting the Anglophone presence in Asia Minor. Over the past century, the wine-whine merger has transitioned from a localized regional feature to a nearly ubiquitous characteristic of U.S. English, a pattern of language change whose social correlates have largely gone unexplored. The present study draws from the Digital Archive of Southern Speech (DASS), a database of 64 linguistic interviews collected in 1970–83, to analyze the distribution of [hw] and [w] pronunciations of morpheme-initial ‹wh› across social and linguistic variables during a time and in a place where the [hw] variant was still common. Results reveal that while all speakers exhibited variation between [hw] and [w] for ‹wh›, with content words exhibiting [hw] at higher rates than function words, intraspeaker variation remained stable across apparent time for White speakers, suggesting that the wine-whine merger had not yet reached this demographic. However, [hw] use sharply declined among Black speakers over the same period, demonstrating a divergence from the local White varieties corresponding to a changing cultural landscape. Further variation in the pronunciation of ‹wh› occurs across subregions of the South. Finally, college-educated speakers were more likely to use [hw], suggesting that this variant should be interpreted as a prestige feature that persisted in the South. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variations in language abilities, use, and production style are ubiquitous within any given population. While research on language evolution has traditionally overlooked the potential importance of such individual differences, these can have an important impact on the trajectory of language evolution and ongoing change. To address this gap, we use a group communication game for studying this mechanism in the lab, in which micro‐societies of interacting participants develop and use artificial languages to successfully communicate with each other. Importantly, one participant in the group is assigned a keyboard with a limited inventory of letters (simulating a speech impairment that individuals may encounter in real life), forcing them to communicate differently than the rest. We test how languages evolve in such heterogeneous groups and whether they adapt to accommodate the unique characteristics of individuals with language idiosyncrasies. Our results suggest that language evolves differently in groups where some individuals have distinct language abilities, eliciting more innovative elements at the cost of reduced communicative success and convergence. Furthermore, we observed strong partner‐specific accommodation to the minority individual, which carried over to the group level. Importantly, the degree of group‐wide adaptation was not uniform and depended on participants' attachment to established language forms. Our findings provide compelling evidence that individual differences can permeate and accumulate within a linguistic community, ultimately driving changes in languages over time. There is ample evidence that individual‐level cognitive mechanisms active during language learning and use can contribute to the evolution of language. For example, experimental work suggests that learners will reduce case marking in a language where grammatical roles are reliably indicated by fixed word order, a correlation found robustly in the languages of the world. However, such research often assumes homogeneity among language learners and users, or at least does not dig into individual differences in behavior. Yet, it is increasingly clear that language users vary in a large number of ways: in culture, in demographics, and—critically for present purposes—in terms of cognitive diversity. Here, we explore how neurodiversity impacts behavior in an experimental task similar to the one summarized above, and how this behavior interacts with social pressures. We find both similarities and differences between autistic and nonautistic English‐speaking individuals, suggesting that neurodiversity can impact language change in the lab. It is evident that language is intricately tied to human experience, serving as a tool for navigation, problem-solving, and social interaction. This article posits that understanding the interplay between language dynamics and stability of dialects requires a nuanced consideration of speakers and their practical relationships with the world as well as their linguistic mental representations. People are not passive recipients of language; rather, they actively engage with it in various contexts, adapting to new situations and influencing linguistic change. Through empirical examples from German dialectology, the article illustrates how speakers' interactions with their environment shape language evolution. Background: This study aimed at preliminarily assessing, in a cohort of non-demented amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, the ecological validity, and more specifically the veridicality, of the Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioural ALS Screen (ECAS) and the ALS Cognitive Behavioral Screen (ALS-CBS™), by relating their scores to caregiver-report ratings of cognitive changes. Methods: N = 147 patient-caregiver dyads were recruited. Patients were administered the ECAS and ALS-CBS™, whilst caregiver the Caregiver Behavioral Questionnaire (CBQ) and Beaumont Behavioural Inventory (BBI). An Ecological Cognitive Functioning Index (ECFI) was derived from those items of the CBQ and BBI that tap on executive and language changes. Ecological validity was assessed via both correlational and predictive analyses net of caregiver-rated behavioural changes (as assessed by the ECAS-Carer Interview). Results: The ECFI was associated with the total scores on both the ECAS (p =.014) and ALS-CBS™ (p =.017). When looking at ECAS and ALS-CBS™ subscales, those assessing verbal fluency were selectively associated with the ECFI. The ECFI was higher in patients performing defectively on the ECAS (p =.004) and on the ALS-CBS™ (p =.027). Discussion: This study suggests that both the ECAS and the ALS-CBS™ represent a valid estimate of non-demented ALS patients' cognitive status in the real world, also highlighting the clinical relevance of cognitive changes reported by caregivers. Neural oscillations are electrophysiological indicators of synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. Recent work suggests aberrant patterns of neuronal activity in patients with poststroke aphasia. Yet, there is a lack of systematic explorations of neural oscillations in poststroke aphasia. Investigating changes in the dynamics of neuronal activity after stroke may be helpful to identify neural markers of aphasia and language recovery and increase the current understanding of successful language rehabilitation. This review summarizes research on neural oscillations in poststroke aphasia and evaluates their potential as biomarkers for specific linguistic processes. We searched the literature through PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO, and selected 31 studies that met the inclusion criteria. Our analyses focused on neural oscillation activity in each frequency band, brain connectivity, and therapy‐induced changes during language recovery. Our review highlights potential neurophysiological markers; however, the literature remains confounded, casting doubt on the reliability of these findings. Future research must address these confounds to confirm the robustness of cross‐study findings on neural oscillations in poststroke aphasia. Phraseological Units (PUs) in a language often include quotations and the so-called authorial "winged words" ("geflügelte Worte" in Gläser 1986), which have a single known author. These units, by gaining popularity among the members of a community of speakers, take on a life of their own as PUs. This study illustrates how these quotations acquire meanings and uses that do not match those of the original formulation they derive from, which, in turn, sheds light on how linguistic expressions at large reach conventionalization through language change. Bernard Shaw (1856–1950) ranks high among the authors who have contributed most to the English Phrasicon. This study investigates two case studies where quotations by Shaw have made their way into the English language as PUs. These quotations, however, are often used, as we shall see, in a way that differs from the sense they had in their original context. This study analyses how some novel PUs are coined and can help us map the processes of semantic adaptation these PUs undergo as they become conventional. GitHub commits, which record the code changes with natural language messages for description, play a critical role in software developers' comprehension of software evolution. Due to their importance in software development, several learning-based works are conducted for GitHub commits, such as commit message generation and security patch identification. However, most existing works focus on customizing specialized neural networks for different tasks. Inspired by the superiority of code pre-trained models, which has confirmed their effectiveness across different downstream tasks, to promote the development of open-source software community, we first collect a large-scale commit benchmark including over 7.99 million commits across 7 programming languages. Based on this benchmark, we present CommitBART, a pre-trained encoder–decoder Transformer model for GitHub commits. The model is pre-trained by three categories (i.e., denoizing objectives, cross-modal generation, and contrastive learning) for six pre-training tasks to learn commit fragment representations. Our model is evaluated on one understanding task and three generation tasks for commits. The comprehensive experiments on these tasks demonstrate that CommitBART significantly outperforms previous pre-trained works for code. The theory of the post-emotional-self and post-emotional society proposes that the industrialized world has become a post-emotional society in which emotion has become separated from action and feeling. If this were the case, then the language used over time should reflect a change from actual emotions, inner feelings, and sensitivities, to outer directed signals designed to influence and manipulate. To test this hypothesis, we analyze the text of almost a quarter of a century of 10-K reports – detailed, objective records of financial performance, filed annually by a publicly traded company. The textual analysis approach we employ is that of Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC). This considers language in terms of analytical thinking, clout, authenticity, and tone. Our findings largely confirm the rise of the post-emotional society and offer intriguing insights into the direction of how language is changing. This paper examines language change in two Lingala youth languages from the DR Congo, Lingala ya Bayankee (sometimes referred to as Yanké) and Langila, focusing on processes of grammaticalization and replication. Speakers of Lingala ya Bayankee use a grammaticalized prefix ké- for the near/immediate future tense, derived from the verb kokende 'to go' and from a manipulated form of the same verb, namely the prefix dyé- from kodyé (with the same meaning). The emergence and development of this tense marker is traced and compared with the strategies used by Langila speakers. Moreover, the microvariationist lens through which changes in the tense-aspect system of Lingala's youth registers are examined in this paper looks at different formation patterns of progressive aspect, with two dominant construction types in Lingala ya Bayankee; these are also compared to the strategies used by Langila speakers. While linguistic manipulations have long been the focus of sociolinguistic approaches to the study of adolescent language use, fine-grained differences in tense and aspect marking have received little attention. School is often said to be a representation of society because its primary aim is to promote integration into society. This study of the landscape elements of minority language schools suggests that this type of linguistic landscape may not only reflect a change in linguistic dominance but can also play a complementary role compared to the external, out-of-school world. In this paper, the authors attempt to explore a new way of interpreting the notion of the linguistic landscape of schools. The novelty of this approach lies in the application of a spatial theoretical concept, where the schoolscape is defined as an element of autopoietic space—a self-constituting spatial element. Within this autopoietic framework, markers of ethnolinguistic vitality in the linguistic landscape of minority language schools are identified, and a set of criteria is established that can be applied to other communities. In this study, we investigate the multifaceted realizations of the /R/ consonant in Québec French (QF) by combining sociolinguistic and phonological approaches. First, from a sociophonetic point of view, we utilize a mixed-effects multinomial logistic regression model to analyze the impact of various variables on the distribution of /R/ variants. Our analysis of location, birth year and gender reveals that each variable and its interactions significantly influence the distribution of /R/ variants. We identify three distinct speaker groups based on their preferences for these variants: those favoring apical variants, those using uvular trills, and those employing neither apical nor uvular trills (mostly using fricatives and their approximantized or vocalized variants). From a phonological point of view, we show that the use of the /R/ variants among the three groups correlates with syllabic position, with weaker variants displayed in so-called "weakening" contexts, such as coda and intervocalic onset. Our results thus show that the apparent diversity of /R/ realizations in QF actually follows a pattern from both a sociolinguistic and a formal phonological point of view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By drawing attention to the translingual practices in Malaysian Mandarin (MM), this study uses lexical variations as an analytical lens through which the changes in linguistic dimensions can be viewed from a social perspective. We present translingual practice as a communicative, rather than a pedagogical, resource that has broader applied relevance in multilingual society. Two findings are presented. First, we elaborate on how MM is interwoven with translingual words of various heritage languages (HLs)/dialects and major/powerful languages; second, we examine how translingual words varied from or standardised towards Standard Mandarin (SM) over time, by HL and in place/region. We argue that intersection with competing levelling pressures reflects not only a "standardisation" process at schools/in society but can be further interpreted as the decline of local translingual practices and local sounds, suggesting the risk of losing rich ethnic and regional heritage and identities. By giving a voice to marginalised HL speakers, this study goes beyond the description of an unstudied/understudied research site or linguistic phenomenon, implying important aspects of power and inequality and a subtle resistance against dominant policies/discourses. Beck et al. (2009) and much follow-up research (including Bochnak 2015; Bowler 2016; Deal and Hohaus 2019) argue that languages systematically differ in the semantics of gradable predicates like tall and old, with some languages adopting a vague, delineation-based semantics and others adopting a relational, degree-based semantics. Beck et al. (2009) capture this point of variation in the so-called Degree Semantics Parameter. Based on elicitation and corpus data, we suggest here that the grammar of Samoan (Austronesian, Oceanic; Independent State of Samoa, American Samoa) has recently undergone a change from one parameter setting to the other, triggered by the addition of a degree-based comparative operator to the functional lexicon of the language. This operator developed through lexical and syntactic re-analysis from a directional particle. In Samoan, the grammar of degree is thus modelled after the grammar of another scalar domain, directed motion in space, a strategy that the typological literature suggests is cross-linguistically common. Metaphor occupies a central role not only in language use, but also in language change and evolution. Specifically, semantic extension motivated by metaphor plays an important role in extending the lexicon of languages. It is this process that enables the emergence of one of the key properties of modern languages, namely that they are open-ended, systematic, polysemous, structured semiotic systems. Here, we review results from three approaches whose integration presents an important cornerstone for an interdisciplinary account of the role of metaphor in the evolutionary dynamics of language: (1) Historical linguistics and diachronic semantics (2) Computational approaches and natural language processing, and (3) Experimental semiotics. Research in historical linguistics has shown that metaphor is a major mechanism of semantic change. Diachronic semantic analyses have not only mapped detailed historical trajectories of semantic extension motivated by metaphor, but also identified common metaphoric pathways of change as well as shared cognitive principles underlying them. Computational approaches and natural language processing have used findings and data from historical linguistics in attempts to automate the detection of metaphoric semantic change and to build data-driven models models of the principles underlying it. Experimental semiotics is a paradigm in which participants have to create novel communication systems in the absence of language. It represents an experimental design that can investigate cultural linguistic evolution and the emergence of metaphors and metaphorical extensions under controlled laboratory settings to shed light on the interactional and cognitive principles involved in it. Combining results from these approaches represents an important first step towards an interdisciplinary, integrative account of the role of metaphor, and processes of polysemous meaning extension more generally, in the evolutionary dynamics of language. Background: Learning assistants (LAs) are undergraduate students who serve as instructional assistants in STEM classrooms. In addition to engaging in active practice, they take a pedagogy seminar and regularly meet with a content instructor. While aspects of LAs' pedagogical beliefs and actions have been investigated, there remains a gap in understanding how LAs make sense of their new instructional roles and how they negotiate between their experiences as students and their responsibilities as instructors. This study uses a sequential, exploratory mixed-methods approach, which includes constant comparative open-coding, thematic analysis, and epistemic network analysis, to analyze 178 reflections written by 89 LAs across five terms at two institutions. Here, we identify each LA's expressed goals and intended actions at the start and the end of their first term as an LA. Using a community of practice framework, we seek to explicate the shifts in these LAs' values as they become more central members of the LA community. Results: LAs' expressed roles shift from being cognitive coaches, where they focus on student thinking, sense-making, and understanding of disciplinary concepts, to being social architects, where their focus shifts to attending to the aspects of the environment that can support productive interactions for learning. A social architect prioritizes goals related to mutual trust, respect, & approachability, understanding and learning about students, and creating a sense of belonging. Similarly, their intended actions emphasize compassion, understanding, and facilitating group discussion. While all LAs studied exhibited this shift, it manifested in different ways and to different extents, as illustrated in detail by four selected cases. These cases illustrate how the shifts coupled to a change in language around teaching, becoming more specific and contextual. Conclusions: LAs express a shift in their valued practices over their first term as LAs related to their instructional role. The goal of student-centered instructional practice is often framed as becoming a better cognitive coach; however, this orientation does not foreground ideas around teaching practice that aim to foster engagement, belonging, and student agency. This paper presents a cross-dialectal study of grammatical gender in Norwegian nominal phrases. Specifically, we investigate the decline of the feminine gender in three age groups across seven different dialects. The dialects vary in their morphological richness of gender marking: some dialects traditionally have more distinctive marking of the feminine gender. With an elicited production experiment, we investigate gender marking on the indefinite determiner and the definite suffix. We find that feminine gender is in decline in all dialects, but there are clear differences between the locations and between age groups. The feminine indefinite determiner ei is replaced by the masculine en at different rates and to a different degree in the various dialects. We furthermore find that the feminine definite suffix -a is retained in all locations except for Stavanger. We argue that the decline of the feminine gender can be explained by an interplay between the morphological richness of the given dialect and dialect contact. This study delves into the intricate process of reanalysis, wherein linguistic expressions undergo grammatical or semantic changes, or sometimes both. The primary objective of this study is to explore the theoretical aspects surrounding historical changes of this nature. To facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the topic, we provide a formal description of reanalysis as an analytical tool. Our formal description allows for the differentiation of various change scenarios, enabling us to identify distinct types of shifts from one analysis to another. This approach not only focuses on what has been reanalyzed, be it the morphology, syntax, or the semantics, but also emphasizes the interplay between all three linguistic modules (Form, Grammar, and Meaning) and their relationships. This holistic perspective enables a systematic examination of the significance of what remains constant at both points in time during the reanalysis process. The key insight arising from this analysis leads us to propose and substantiate the Early Semantic Stability Hypothesis. This hypothesis posits that the truth-conditional semantics of the original proposition remain unchanged throughout reanalysis, either in all contexts or in specific “bridging contexts” where the reanalysis occurs. To demonstrate these phenomena, we present a compelling test case, focusing on the development of the counterfactual conditional marker ʾilmale in Hebrew and Aramaic. Through a detailed examination of the syntactic and semantic reanalyses it underwent, we observe the emergence of unique semantic features. By adopting a formal semantic perspective, we address fundamental questions such as the level of ambiguity required for reanalysis to take place, the potential existence of universal constraints on reanalysis, and potential motivations driving these linguistic changes. This investigation provides valuable insights into the intricate mechanisms at play during reanalysis and contributes to the broader understanding of linguistic evolution and development. Narratives are crucial for investigating children’s spontaneous language, offering insights into linguistic changes from early childhood to adolescence. Despite the known improvement in narrative skills with age, research focusing on bilingual children older than 8 is sparse. This study explores narrative macrostructure, episodic complexity, and internal state terms expressing feelings and thoughts among bilingual children in preschool, primary, and secondary school, focusing on English as a heritage language. Narratives were elicited from fifty-nine English-Hebrew bilinguals aged 5–14, divided into three age-groups, using Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (Gagarina, N., D. Klop, S. Kunnari, K. Tantele, T. Välimaa, I. Balcˇiūnienė, U. Bohnacker, and J. Walters. 2014. “MAIN: Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives.” ZAS Papers in Linguistics 56:1–156), with language exposure data collected from parent questionnaires. Analyses of story grammar elements and episodic complexity revealed significant age-related differences in narrative macrostructure, with older children demonstrating more complex and coherent narratives. The length of exposure to the societal language did not significantly predict narrative outcomes, suggesting that narrative quality is not solely dependent on societal language exposure duration. This study provides valuable baseline data for typical narrative development in bilinguals and could aid in identifying Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) in bilingual populations. We reveal an ongoing language change in Ukrainian involving a construction with a subject comprised of the indefinite quantifier багато 'many' modifying a noun phrase in the Genitive Plural. Number agreement on the verb varies, allowing both Singular (in 69.1% of attestations) and Plural (in 30.9% of attestations). Based on statistical analysis of corpus data, we investigate the influence of the factors of year of creation, word order of subject and verb, and animacy of the subject on the choice of verb number. We find that, while all combinations of word order and animacy are robustly attested, VS word order and inanimate subjects tend to prefer Singular, whereas SV word order and animate subjects tend to prefer Plural. Since about the 1950s, the proportion of Plural has been increasing, overtaking Singular in the current decade. We propose that this Singular vs. Plural variation is motivated by the human embodied experience of construing a group of items as either a homogeneous mass (and therefore Singular) or a multiplicity of individuals (and therefore Plural). This proposal is supported by the identification of micro-constructions that prefer Singular and show reduced individuation of human beings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the morphosyntax of the East African Swahili-based urban youth language or stylect Sheng. Research on urban youth languages has often focused on these varieties as sites of rapid change and linguistic creativity. However, we show that many of the structural features which appear to make Sheng stand out when compared to (Standard) Swahili are widespread across East African Bantu languages. We examine nominal and verbal domains, as well as clausal syntax, and highlight areas in which Sheng exhibits features in common with its contact languages, as well as features which appear to reflect instances of independent innovation. The study shows that Sheng is not a "simplified" version of Swahili which deviates from the grammar of Swahili in a range of ad hoc ways. Rather, the language exhibits features of retention and contact-induced borrowing, as well as systematic changes which are reflective of variation across the Bantu languages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spoken language change detection (LCD) refers to identifying the language transitions in a code-switched utterance. Similarly, identifying the speaker transitions in a multispeaker utterance is known as speaker change detection (SCD). Since tasks-wise both are similar, the architecture/framework developed for the SCD task may be suitable for the LCD task. Hence, the aim of the present work is to develop LCD systems inspired by SCD. Initially, both LCD and SCD are performed by humans. The study suggests humans require (a) a larger duration around the change point and (b) language-specific prior exposure, for performing LCD as compared to SCD. The larger duration requirement is incorporated by increasing the analysis window length of the unsupervised distance-based approach. This leads to a relative performance improvement of 29.1 % and 2.4 % , and a priori language knowledge provides a relative improvement of 31.63 % and 4.01 % on the synthetic and practical codeswitched datasets, respectively. Based on semi-spontaneous speech data collected from five Judeo-Spanish speakers from Bulgaria, we argue that narrow syntax is rather stable in contact settings. The changes that take place in this domain are subject to natural processes of language change. In order for a structure to be influenced by the contact language, or to converge on the contact language, it needs to be located at the interfaces. However, in contrast to current assumptions concerning the Interface Hypothesis, we argue that whether a structure converges or not depends on whether a similar structure can be identified in the contact language. To underpin our analysis, we investigate clitic placement, clitic climbing, possessives, and adjective placement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
