Background. Reading is important in the teaching and learning process. Reading is the process of absorbing knowledge through reading or writing. Each student has varying abilities from fast, medium and slow in terms of reading. Purpose. This study aims to improve habituation in students in increasing interest in reading. Method. By holding literacy, it is hoped that it will be able to increase students' interest in reading and increase knowledge that can be a provision in the future in Carangwulung Wonosalam Village. Results. The research subjects were children aged 7-12 years with data collection techniques by direct observation, interviews and documentation. Conclusion. This research can be concluded that the reading corner is very helpful in fostering students' interest in reading in the classroom, the role of the reading corner in growing students' interest in reading, namely, as a place to read facilitator, as the closest reading material, a comfortable reading place and a place to read that attracts attention, so that from some of these roles it helps foster interest in reading. This is a report from the field, where an immigrant mother journaled about her Yemeni American daughters (ages 7 and 13, born and raised in the U.S.) visiting museums for the first time. Her diary documented how mother–child and sibling interactions in museum education contributed to building cognitive and affective skills required for academic success in formal schooling. Her diary entries included: (1) anecdotal observations, (2) interviews of her daughters and her immigrant father, and (3) reflective and photographic journaling. Her daughters’ journaling and photo documentations further supported their mother’s entries. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory is the conceptual framework for this project. The mother promoted her daughters’ immigrant identity via visits to museums and activities related to the museum and the family’s immigrant identity offered before, during, and after the museum visits. The project culminated with her daughters creating their unique family museum and dramatizing as docents. We recommend (1) museum-related interactive literacy activities, and (2) creating and dramatizing a family museum.We buttress these recommendations with research, Vygotsky’s theory, and our evidence-based practice. We conclude that the daughters demonstrated the cognitive and affective skills required for academic success in formal schooling while simultaneously developing their immigrant identity. We suggest replicating this project to promote immigrant identity among other cultural groups. We lastly present an educational case study of the grandfather’s immigrant experiences in the appendix. The purpose of this research is to discover how early literacy activities are implemented during Covid-19 pandemic in Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia. Since the offline meeting at school has been discontinued, the research sample consists of 400 parents in Pekanbaru who were recruited online. This research method is descriptive in quantitative terms and provides an overview of the performance of literacy activities in Pekanbaru Riau. A questionnaire with A Likert Scale Model was used to collect data. The percentage descriptive technique was used for data analysis with IBM SPSS for Windows Version 23. The results showed that the implementation of literacy activities in Pekanbaru kindergarten was carried out through the parent participation in early childhood literacy development. According to the findings, four indicators that children must have in order to develop early literacy well (vocabulary, narrative, print awareness, and print motivation) are in the high category or more than 65%. Meanwhile, the Letter Knowledge and Phonological Awareness skills are sufficient, at around 60%. Overall, the results of this study are in the high category (64.5%), indicating that literacy activities in Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia, have involved parents in the advancement of early childhood literacy skills. Stimulation on language development aspects is greatly needed since humans’ life may not be separated from language use and acquisition. This research aims at examining the influence of literacy and read aloud activities on the early childhood education students’ receptive language skills. This research is a correlational quantitative study conducted with a survey approach. The research population was the students of Early Childhood Education Institutions in South Purwokerto District, Banyumas Regency. There were 54 Early Childhood Education Institutions in South Purwokerto District divided into 7 groups/clusters. The sampling of this research was conducted by using the Slovin’s formula with the total samples of 115 students of Early Childhood Education Institutions. The data was collected through observation and then descriptively analyzed in percentages using multiple regression analysis supported with SPSS 23.0. The research results showed that literacy activities influenced the Early Childhood Education students’ receptive language skills with the t-count value of 6.620 at the significance of 0.000. Read aloud activities also influenced the Early Childhood Education students’ receptive language skills with the t-count value of 8.066 at the significance of 0.000. Literacy and read aloud activities significantly influenced the Early Childhood Education students’ receptive language skills with the f-count value of 70.386 at the significance of 0.000 and the total influence of 55.5%. Thus, it is suggested that literacy and read aloud activities should be continuously made to improve the Early Childhood Education students’ receptive language skills.

Computer-assisted language teaching (CALT) is widely used in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) at the tertiary level. As illustrated by existing research, the value of CALT lies in its leveraging of technological affordances (e.g., multimodal resources or interactive spaces) to motivate students' interest in learning. However, beyond the technological level, CALT tends to treat language (i.e., vocabulary and grammar) separately from content (i.e., the meaning of a discourse). This means that to further improve CALT in the EFL context, students' understanding of the relationship between language and content, which contributes to their success in literacy activities, must be fostered pedagogically. Thus, this paper introduces systemic functional linguistics and argues for its use as a complementary tool for improving students' engagement in CALT. This study aims to identify gender values through literacy activities and analyze their effects on gender relations in literacy activist families in Makassar. This research is a qualitative research using descriptive analysis. Data obtained through literature review, interview and observation. The informants were selected by purposive sampling by determining 2 families of literacy activists, namely Paradigma Institute and Kampung Buku in Makassar City, South Sulawesi. The data were processed using coding techniques and analyzed using family ecology theory and socialist feminist theory. The results showed that literacy activities in the form of the establishment of libraries and initiation of learning spaces carried out by literacy activists in their homes, contained gender values namely openness, equality, and cooperation. Internalization of gender values through literacy activities affects the gender relations between husband, wife and children in the family. This form of internalization of values is reflected in the decision making process in determining education and childcare as well as in the division of labor in the household.

We explored the home learning environments of 173 Mexican preschool children (aged 3–6 years) in relation to their numeracy performance. Parents indicated the frequency of their formal home numeracy and literacy activities, and their academic expectations for children’s numeracy and literacy performance. Children completed measures of early numeracy skills. Mexican parent–child dyads from families with either high- or low-socioeconomic status (SES) participated. Low-SES parents (n = 99) reported higher numeracy expectations than high-SES parents (n = 74), but similar frequency of home numeracy activities. In contrast, high-SES parents reported higher frequency of literacy activities. Path analyses showed that operational (i.e., advanced) numeracy activities were positively related to children’s numeracy skills in the high- but not in the low-SES group. These findings improve the understanding of the role of the home environment in different contexts and provide some insights into the sources of the variable patterns of relations between home learning activities and children’s numeracy outcomes. They also suggest that SES is a critical factor to consider in research on children’s home numeracy experiences.

This study explored potential factors of numeracy acquisition in young children with intellectual disabilities (IDs). Those factors are determined to assess parents' academic expectations and home practices that they use with their children daily. The sample consisted of 187 Greek-speaking couples, comprising a total number of 374 parents. All of them had a child with mild IDs aged between 4 and 7 years old. Since Greece is placed among European countries with the lowest median disposable income it is significant to assess the potential effects of each family's socioeconomic status. We employed structural equation modeling to identify potential factors affecting a child's with IDs numeracy outcomes. Analysis of moments structures (AMOS) revealed that there is a good fit for the suggested second-order structural equation model. Early care and education (ECE) teachers shape children's daily experiences in many ways. Specifically, teachers' well‐being, attitudes about child development, and teaching practices are central influences on children's learning. One crucial way ECE programs support teachers to enhance children's learning environments is through the provision of professional development (PD), but little research has examined the PD provided by ECE programs in the absence of focused initiatives to support teachers. In this descriptive study, we use data from a nationally representative study of Head Start teachers (N = 484) to explore whether teachers' job satisfaction, depression, developmentally appropriate attitudes, and frequency of engagement in math and literacy activities are associated with the number of (a) overall PD supports available to teachers, (b) curriculum supports received by teachers, and (c) mentoring supports received by teachers. Many of the associations between teachers' outcomes and overall PD supports, curriculum supports, and mentoring supports were not statistically significant, perhaps because the PD variables do not measure the quality or content of the PD provided. However, those PD supports that were significantly associated with outcomes were associated with specific teacher outcomes in ways consistent with theory, although associations were relatively weak. To contextualize these findings, we describe how PD supports and teachers' outcomes have changed over nearly a decade that encompasses some key Head Start policy changes. Language teachers have many ways to make the teaching and learning process become more interesting, especially in teaching the students with the special need. One of this types known as ADHD (Attention Deficits Hyperactive Disorder) will be discussed in this paper. The student with this type of special need has a special ways too in their teaching and learning process. In this case, reading comprehension. Reading is well known as one of the literacy activities. Make the students literate is very important no matter who the student is. Thus the special need student also has a right to be literate too through the literacy activities. This paper focuses on describing the teaching and learning process of reading using comic strip. The discussion is about the way it conducts in a class, the steps and also the materials used. The data were collected by documentation, observation, and interview; and, analyzed using qualitative description. The results show that comic strip is able to build an enthusiasm of the student. It is because comic strip is interesting for him. It automatically helps him to predict the content of the text given. Thus, through the use of comic strip, the problems related to the reading comprehension of special need students are solved gradually

The purpose of the present study is to establish how the quality of kindergarten classroom interactions and the frequency of literacy activities affect reading development among Grade 1 children—both those who are at risk and not at risk of developing reading difficulties. Interaction was assessed in terms of classroom organization, and the level of emotional and instructional support offered in 49 kindergarten classrooms in Finland using the CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System). Kindergarten teachers also recorded the frequency of literacy activities in their classrooms. The phonological awareness and letter knowledge of 515 children (i.e., their pre-reading skills) were assessed at the end of kindergarten, as were their reading skills at the start and at the end of Grade 1. Eighty-seven of these children were identified in kindergarten as being likely to develop reading difficulties. The results showed that emotional support and classroom organization in kindergarten were positively associated with the development of children’s reading skills across Grade 1, especially for those prone to reading difficulties. They also showed that frequent literacy activities in kindergarten were positively related to children’s reading skills shortly after entering Grade 1. All the positive longitudinal associations were stronger for those children seen to be at risk of developing reading difficulties than for those not at risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large-group circle time is an important component of many preschool classrooms’ daily schedules. This study scrutinized the teaching content of Head Start teachers’ literacy instruction (i.e., the types of literacy concept embedded within the instruction, lexical characteristics of teachers’ talk, and elaborations on literacy knowledge) in two different large-group activity contexts (book reading and nonbook reading) that occur during large-group circle time at the beginning and the end of fall semester. Change in teachers’ literacy instruction across the semester and within each context was examined. Results indicated that teachers engaged in more literacy instruction in the nonbook reading context than during book reading. Teachers provided more vocabulary instruction than code-related instruction during book reading, but a similar amount of each type of instruction during nonbook reading. More vocabulary instruction occurred in winter than in fall, whereas the lexical characteristics of teachers’ talk and elaborations of newly introduced literacy knowledge remained stable. This study provides an approach to distinguishing different components of teachers’ literacy instructions. The findings point to the potential of efforts to strengthen teachers’ evidence-based literacy instruction during non-book-reading group activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the effect of certain socio-cultural factors of the family environment on the language of toddlers and children in early childhood. The sample included 86 families with one- to six-year-old children. The data on the social, economic, and cultural factors of the family environment, parental reading literacy, parental knowledge of children's development, children's exposure to shared reading, and child language were obtained in the family environment. Path analysis was used to verify the presumed structural model, which included social and economic factors of the family environment, parental knowledge of children's development, and parental reading literacy as independent variables, activities used by parents to encourage their child's language as mediating variables, and children's early literacy and language as a dependent variable. The analysis results showed that the presumed structural model fitted our data well. Parental education (PE), family financial conditions, parental knowledge of children's development, and parental reading literacy was able to explain 13% of the variance in child language. The obtained results confirm the significant effect of social, economic, and cultural factors of the child's family on language during toddlerhood and early childhood. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article deals with an intervention unit which focused on the positive effect of integrating poems, stories and fables (the literary genre) for improving mathematical language, fostering the teaching of mathematics language, increasing satisfaction with the process and strengthening the relationship between use of daily language and mathematics language. The study was conducted amongst pre-service mathematics teachers, specialising in literacy activities designed to foster mathematics language. One of the study outcomes was a ‘bank’ of words with double meanings which can result in misguided perceptions and common errors. Another outcome was a pool of ideas for literacy activities in mathematics which can develop wide, integrative activities. Exposure to and awareness of such a bank of words may help mathematics education practitioners to cope with difficulties in mathematics teaching and learning.

The progressive educational systems of some regions of Italy are becoming increasingly recognized by educators and researchers seeking insight into diverse educational approaches from the international community. This article represents a case study of Filastrocca (“Nursery Rhyme”), a preschool in the Tuscan city of Pistoia. Filastrocca proclaims a special mission related to books, storytelling, and the imagination and appears to offer a unique environment that supports children's active and enthusiastic engagement in complex literacy discussions and activities. This article provides a detailed description of the learning environment for language and literacy at the preschool, presents an analysis of issues/themes, and offers assertions and reflections. There is an emphasis on exploring what kinds of opportunities related to books, storytelling, and the imagination support and encourage young children and their families, and in examining how the learning environment reflects the mission of the school in fostering early childhood language and literacy. Children’s emergent language develops in a rich context of varied influences afforded by their familial and social environments. Using data collected during a longitudinal prospective service project, this study examined the direct and indirect contributions of parenting knowledge and practices and maternal postnatal depression on emergent language competencies of 198 very young children in high-risk Latino and African/American families in an urban area. The study used the Knowledge of Infant Development Inventory, a constructed measure of risky parenting practices for child well-health, home-safety, and corporal discipline, a constructed measure for children’s involvement in literacy oriented activities, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories to build and test a structural equation model with AMOS/SPSS 16. The results provide support for a mediated path model. Parenting knowledge and maternal postnatal depressive symptoms interacted directly and indirectly in influencing risky parental practices and children’s exposure in literacy oriented stimulation activities and emergent language. Children’s involvement in stimulation activities mediated the effects of parenting and maternal mental health and directly predicted a robust amount children’s emergent vocabulary. The model produced similar results for boys and girls, although boys had poorer outcomes. These findings provide empirical evidence that clinical practice and policy efforts are needed for reducing maternal postnatal depression in strengthening parenting efforts and in affording meaningful parent–child interactions and for assuring that children receive adequate exposure to activities that promote language development. Engaging young children in literacy activities at home is one way for families to augment and enrich the home literacy setting and to participate in their child’s education at an early age (St. Pierre et al. in Dev Psychol 41(6): 953–970, 2005). Burgess et al. (Read Res Quart 4(4): 408–426, 2002) suggested that the resources families have at their disposal, the quality of literacy role models provided by parents, and the types of literacy and language activities in which parents and children engage, are all related to young children’s developing literacy and language abilities. Other studies demonstrated that even modest literacy-promoting interventions can significantly enhance a young child’s early literacy environment by increasing the frequency of parent–child book-sharing activities (Weitzman et al. in Pediatrics 113(5):1248–1253, 2004). Dever (J Early Educ Fam Rev 8(4):17–28, 2001) and Dever and Burtis (Early Child Dev Care 172(4):359–370, 2002) emphasize the use of family literacy bags for early childhood development. Developing and sharing take-home literacy bags is an exciting literacy-promoting activity that may be shared with children and families to provide support for emergent literacy. This article explores the development of the BAGS (Books and Good Stuff) take-home literacy kits and provides suggestions for content, construction, implementation, and evaluation. Research has demonstrated that early exposure to literacy is one of the essential foundations for promoting positive outcomes and successful life transitions for children and young people. Academic and social successes within the domain of education are recognized factors in fostering resilience in at-risk populations. Unfortunately, in Canada the potential for differing outcomes exists between children within the general population and those children within the child welfare system, due to the latter's lack of educational and social supports. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of engagements in literacy-promoting activities by children in the child welfare system. Participants were approximately 114 children living in out-of-home care in the province of Ontario, Canada, who were participating in the Ontario Looking After Children project. They were aged between 1 and 4 years, and virtually all the participants had experienced severe adversity while living with their birth families and, as a consequence, were under the custody and care of their local Children's Aid Society. The study incorporated the literacy-promoting activities scales from the National Longitudinal Study of Children and Youth, and explored the relationship between national literacy strategies and childhood development. Findings demonstrated that the in-care population was provided with ample opportunities to engage in literacy-promoting activities, and in fact generally did so more often than children in the general population.
