FERROELECTRIC thin films , *FERROELECTRIC devices , *LANDAU theory , *WKB approximation , *TUNNEL design & construction - Abstract
The ferroelectric tunneling junction, with a metal-ferroelectric ultra-thin film-metal structure, has different tunneling resistance states through polarization manipulation, leading to potential applications in next-generation information storage devices with low-power consumption, fast reading/writing speed, high storage density, and non-volatility. However, the ferroelectric thin films still experience high-temperature rises with reduced stability due to high driving fields, and reducing the driving electric field is crucial for designing ferroelectric tunneling devices. The ferroelectric thin films with coexisting domains have lowered barriers and decreased driving electric fields for domain switching, which are achieved through substrate manipulation. Herein the substrate effects on the driving field, the tunneling resistance switching ratio and the tunneling properties, were studied based on the WKB approximation combined with the Landau phenomenological theory. The results show that, the ferroelectric tunnel junction with coexisting domains exhibits 3 resistive states corresponding to out-of-plane and in-plane polarizations. The effective driving electric field can be reduced to 25 MV/m, which is 76% lower than that with 2 resistive single domains. The proposed theoretical framework provides a fundamental understanding of the formation of multi-state and reduction of the driving field for low-energy, multi-resistance ferroelectric storage devices. BENCHMARK problems (Computer science) ,EULER equations - Abstract
To improve the shock-capturing capability of the third-order WENO scheme and enhance its computational efficiency, in this paper, we design a new WENO scheme independent of the local smoothing factor, WENO-SIF. The weight function of the WENO-SIF scheme is the segmentation function of the sub-stencil, which is guaranteed to achieve the desired accuracy at higher order critical points. WENO-SIF does not need to compute the smoothing factor during the computation, which effectively reduces the computational consumption. The present WENO-SIF is compared with WENO-JS and other WENO schemes for numerical experiments at one- and two-dimensional benchmark problems with a suitable choice of λ = 0.13 . The results demonstrate that the WENO scheme can further improve the resolution of WENO-JS, achieve optimal accuracy at high-order critical points, and significantly reduce the computational consumption. MEMRISTORS , *STRAY currents , *VALENCE fluctuations , *MAGNETRON sputtering , *OXYGEN , *DOPING agents (Chemistry) - Abstract
Due to the instability of Fe valence and the existence of a large number of oxygen vacancies in BFO films, a large leakage current, and comparatively low resistance value usually appear in BFO-based devices and high operating voltage and power consumption are demanded to form regular oxygen vacancy conductive channels, which restricts the application of BFO in resistive memory and memristor devices. In this paper, a series of Pt/BiFe 1-x Mn x O 3 /TiN (BFMO, x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) devices with different Mn doping concentrations were prepared by magnetron sputtering and lithography, and the microstructure and electrical characteristics of BFMO-based devices were investigated. As the amount of Mn doping increases, the resistive switching properties including operating voltage, power consumption, cycle stability, and retention of BFMO device first improve and then degrade. Interestingly, with the increase of Mn doping concentrations, the ratio of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and oxygen vacancies to lattice oxygen in BFMO devices analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy initially diminishes reaching the minimum and then rises. Notably, BiFe 0 · 9 Mn 0 · 1 O 3 device presents low DC operating voltage of −0.7 V and 0.8 V, preferable endurance of 104 pulse cycles, and low power consumption of only 0.45 pJ in a single set process. The remarkable electrical performance in BFMO-based devices likely originated from the inhibition of initial oxygen vacancies caused by Mn doping with appropriate content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This brief presents two low consumption balanced front-end amplifiers designed in 65nm PD-SOI CMOS technology dedicated to low output power 60 GHz short-range wireless applications. For both designs, a resistive feedback neutralized common source differential pair architecture is used with 90° twisted hybrid couplers which allows power combining in addition to an improved robustness against load variations shown by load-pull experimental results. A specific design approach is used to reduce power consumption and limit the output power level. The one-stage amplifier exhibits a gain of 5.43 dB, an OCP1dB of 4.5 dBm, a saturated power superior to 6.33 dBm and a peak PAE of 8.6 % for a total power consumption of solely 14 mW and an active area of 0.17 mm2. The three-stage amplifier exhibits a gain of 21 dB, an OCP1dB of 3.7 dBm, a ${\mathbf {P}}_{\mathbf {sat}}$ of 7 dBm and a peak PAE of 8.4 % under a total power consumption of only 42 mW and an active area of 0.3 mm2. All the reported performances are obtained at 60 GHz from a 1V supply voltage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In nanoscale devices, bio-memristor has attracted more and more attention as a promising candidate due to its simple structure, fast switching speed, and low power consumption. However, the randomness of the growth and breakage of the conductive filaments will result into dispersed distribution of the switching voltage, and the performance of the memristor will be weakened. Here, we have improved the performance of Ag-doped bovine serum albumin (BSA)-based device by inserting one ZrO2 layer, such as reduced switching voltage, uniform distribution of set and reset voltage, robust retention, fast switching speed, and low switching power. Bendable memristors were fabricated on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) flexible substrate, which can be bent more than 500 times, and the electrical characteristics of different bending degrees have been compared. Furthermore, the device can degrade after 36 h in deionized (DI) aqueous solution. The overall performance of the memristor with the Ag-doped BSA device by inserted oxide ZrO2 layer has the potential to open up a new way to improve the reliability of oxides-based memristor and lays the foundation for flexible artificial synapses. For the sustainable reutilization of poultry feces (PF) to reduce environmental pollution, we present a novel approach for converting PF into a highly effective catalyst, consisting of trace copper (Cu) and sulfur (S) linked with ordered graphitized carbon (CS/CPF) for wastewater purification. Raman and EPR results verified that the disorderly organic matters in PF are transformed into orderly graphene structures that complexed with Cu to form large numbers of electron-poor/rich microregions on CS/CPF surface. The electrons from electron-rich organic pollutants can be directly captured by dissolved oxygen (DO) to produce abundant reactive oxygen species due to the enhanced electron polarization via the construction of Cu–S–C bond bridge on CS/CPF surface, which greatly enhance the removal efficiency of pollutants. CS/CPF achieves 100% removal for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in just 10 min after adding trace peroxymonosulfate (PMS), keeping efficient catalytic activity after continuous reactions for 240 h. This strategy offers a practical and sustainable solution for the efficient resource recovery of poultry feces. [Display omitted] • PF was turned into a water purification catalyst by original resourcing technology. • Surface electron-rich/poor microregions were induced by trace Cu and S. • Refractory pollutants were quickly removed in just 10 min triggered by trace PMS. • Electrons of pollutant were utilized during a new interface reaction process. Sulfate Radical-Advanced Oxidation Processes are considered an efficient way for purifying dyeing wastewater, which commonly resists conventional treatment processes owing to the complex components, low biodegradability and high toxicity. However, this emerging technique is associated with issues of secondary pollution and great energy consumption during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate (PS) activation processes. Herein, a dye pollutant/PS/visible light self-catalytic system was constructed, based on the photosensitive property of organic dyes for PS activation without catalyst and energy input. In this system, the degradation ratio of 100 mL 10 mg L−1 basic fuchsin, rhodamine B and eosin Y significantly increased by 60%, 76% and 50%, compared with the process without light irradiation. Such improvements were attributable to an efficient photo-induced electron transfer from photo-excited dyes to PS, which has the precondition that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level of the dye is higher than that of PS, thereby generating oxidizing species like ·SO 4 −, ·OH and 1O 2 for pollutants degradation. Due to the high performance of pollutants simultaneous removal, wide pH adaptability and anti-interference, the complex self-catalytic system consisted of nine dyes and bis -phenol A exhibited the possibility for practical application. Expectedly, the actual dyeing wastewater self-purification system featured a decolorization efficiency of 54% accompanied by the removal of co-existing aromatic proteins and tryptophan-like substances; moreover, the acute bio-toxicity of the raw wastewater greatly decreased by 61.6%. Owing to its high efficiency, eco-friendliness and low consumption, the constructed "using waste to treat waste" system provides a promising way for wastewater treatment. [Display omitted] • A novel PS activation system without catalyst and energy input was constructed. • Well-matched energy level between photosensitive dye and PS leads to activation. • Dye and co-existing pollutants were simultaneously removed with high efficiency. • Actual dyeing wastewater was purified in a novel way of using waste to treat waste. • The eco-friendly and low-cost method has great potential in wastewater treatment. FEATURE selection ,DECISION making ,HIERARCHICAL clustering (Cluster analysis) - Abstract
Decision variable analysis (DVA) methods have provided the promising direction in solving large-scale multiobjective optimization problems (LMOPs). However, most existing DVA-based methods still have the problem of high evaluation consumption, which limits the performance of solving LMOPs. To alleviate this issue, this paper proposes a new redefined DVA method with low-consumption for solving LMOPs, called R-DVA. Specifically, R-DVA detects the interrelationship among convergent decision variables by using a distance-based hierarchical clustering method, which does not need to generate lots of solutions, thus saving a large number of evaluation consumption. In addition, to improve the performance of population, an evolutionary-state-oriented evolutionary (EsoE) strategy with two search models is designed in R-DVA, which can monitor the evolutionary state of population and perform different search models according to different evolutionary states. Specifically, the intra-group optimization model is used to accelerate the convergence speed when the population is in the exploration state. Moreover, a quality-based segmentation competitive swarm optimizer is designed in the inter-group optimization model, aiming to enhance the diversity of the population when the population is in the exploitation state. In this way, a good trade-off between the convergence and diversity can be achieved via the EsoE strategy. Finally, extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed R-DVA achieves the best results in comparison to five state-of-the-art competitive algorithms on most adopted benchmark LMOPs and a real-world large-scale application, i.e., feature selection. • A redefined DVA method is proposed to reduce evaluation consumption. • An EsoE strategy is presented to balance the exploration and exploitation. • Our method outperforms other LMOEAs in solving LMOPs and FS problems. The aim of the study is to reduce electricity consumption in rural milk collection points from the popu-lation. The paper presented a study on milk cooling refrigeration installations used at milk collection points in the Republic of Moldova. The design of the installation and the ratio of its electricity consumption nodes were analyzed. In order to reduce energy consumption, solutions have been proposed to improve the constructive-technological parameters of the electric motors in the refrigeration installations for milk cooling. It was proposed to modernize the asynchronous motors by placing permanent magnets on the rotors, which will increase the efficiency and the power factor of the motor, therefore reducing the consumption of active and reactive energy in the electrical network.

In this paper is presented an investigation on a new low cost and voltage consumption single poly-silicon memory cell for passive RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification)applications. This structure is low cost due to its single poly-silicon design. This memory cell has two particularities : the first one is that no deported capacitor is necessary to program this cell which allows to reduce the structure size to 1.1μm². The second one is the way the cell is erased. A Zener diode is used to generate carriers in order to be injected into the floating gate. This Zener diode is one of the key points for the functionality that has to be validated with some electrical trials. These trials permit to integrate and use the Zener diodes measured in simulations of the complete memory cell. This is done to validate the best candidate between the Zener diodes used for the cell and highlight the efficiency in consumption and rapidity to erase the cell. Besides, the writing and the reading cases are simulated in order to show the low consumption required by the cell during these phases.

Background and Aims This study aimed to investigate the similarities and differences in the reasons why alcohol consumers choose to avoid purchasing or consuming wine across five countries, and to investigate similarities and differences across three generations. Methods and Results Adults who consumed alcohol regularly, in healthy quantities, but rarely or never consumed wine were recruited from five countries and stratified into age groups. Online chat-based focus groups were conducted for each country and age group. Semantic themes were identified by applied thematic analysis. Three main categories were identified: complications with wine, cultural/social influences and wine characteristics. The reasons for avoiding wine were complex. Exceptions to this consensus were: people who disliked the taste of wine, and would not drink it under any circumstances; and the Indian participants who had a unique cultural experience with wine. Conclusions Taste was the primary reason for avoiding wine; however, social norms, personal experience and situations are also involved. The reported differences and similarities across countries and generations could assist the wine industry in targeting their marketing strategies. Significance of the Study This is the first qualitative study to explore the reasons for avoiding wine in adults who consume alcohol across countries and generations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Improper disposal of waste biomass and an increasing number of emerging contaminants (ECs) in water environment are universal threats to the global environment. Here, we creatively propose a sustainable strategy for the direct resource transformation of livestock manure (LM) into an innovative catalyst (Fe-CCM) for water self-purification with zero external consumption. ECs can be rapidly degraded in this self-purification system at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, without any external oxidants or energy input, accompanied by H
2 O and dissolved oxygen (DO) activation. The performance of the self-purification system is not affected by various types of salinity in the wastewater, and the corresponding second-order kinetic constant is improved 7 times. The enhanced water self-purification mechanism reveales that intermolecular forces between anions and pollutants reinforce electron exchange between pollutants and metal sites on the catalyst, further inducing the utilization of the intrinsic energy of contaminants, H2 O, and DO through the interfacial reaction. This work provides new insights into the rapid removal of ECs in complicated water systems with zero external consumption and is expected to advance the resource utilization of livestock waste.- Published

ABSTRACT In this article, the integration of a frequency-coded radio frequency identification tag with an integrated temperature sensor long lifetime is proposed. It is demonstrated that temperature range can be measured and coded in a tag using tunable stub-loaded dual-band resonator that is connected between two orthogonal wideband antennas. The sensor tag emits two different frequencies: the first resonance is used for identification of sensor tag whereas the second frequency is equivalent to temperature. The second resonance is tuned with a varactor controlled by a negative temperature coefficient sensor and its low-power consumption conditioning circuit. The conditioning circuit modifies the voltage of the varactor and this modifies the second resonant frequency. The resonant structure is studied as a proof of concept. Experimental results at different distances are provided. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:2411-2415, 2014 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The principal techniques of coding used for secure encrypted communications are first indicated. Then, after a brief recall of the essential points of frequency-agile filters, a second order frequency-hopping bandpass filter operating in current mode and implemented with CCCII is introduced. It necessitates six CCCII only and uses an improved multiple feedback loop connected in such a way that all of its frequency-agile filters of classes 0, 1, 2 and 3 are available. This very low consumption active filter so offers the advantage to have four central frequencies selected digitally for each value of its bias current. Validation results in 0.25 μm SiGe BiCMOS technology are given. They highlight the new perspectives for encrypted communications to be expected from this approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT A transistor array (TR) bank devised for operating a spin torque oscillator as the DCSO is first proposed. The TR bank supplies a minimum of 86% current per step of the targeted value at any condition and covers the 2.85-GHz band fully with a 1 nA at the minimum code word step. Having driving capability up to 2.5 mA, the TR bank is operated from 0.6 to 1.4 mA at 1.7VDD. The spintronics oscillator size is as small as 0.014 µm2, excluding the TR bank of 0.23 mm2. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 56:1991-1994, 2014 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Alcohol consumption screening is essential in pregnancy follow-up. Heavy drinking is responsible for fetal lesion best known as Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Growth retardation, facial dysmorphia, organic malformations and mental retardation can occur in case of high utero exposition with dose-effect. Long term pediatric cognition and behavior could be impaired by light or moderate maternal consumptions or occasional binge drinking. Alcohol consumption screening during pregnancy is difficult and should be improved by auto-questionnaire use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Theoretical calculations have confirmed that modulation of vacancy defects could enhance the sensing properties of semiconductor gas sensors effectively. In this work, we develop a novel and cost-effective process to prepare S-vacancy-enriched SnS (V s -SnS) for room temperature methanol sensors and further clarify the enhanced sensing mechanism of V s -SnS based on first-principles calculation. The V s -SnS were successful formed via one-step solvothermal process in Sn-rich environment, which could be confirmed by the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. Comparative investigations for methanol-sensing properties indicate that the V s -SnS display an ∼143.9-fold enhancement in gas response at room temperature compared with conventional-SnS (C–SnS). Meanwhile, ultrafast response/recovery and low detection limit are observed for the V s -SnS sensor (3 s of response time and 7 s of recovery time for 500 ppb methanol). The significant methanol sensing improvement could ascribed to the decrease in effective hole carrier concentration after introducing the S-vacancy as electron donor. The present study demonstrates the considerable effect and potential of vacancy modulation in the field of gas sensor applications, and the V s -SnS is promising in highly sensitive methanol sensors with low consumption. • A valuable strategy guiding the design of gas sensors based on 2D monochalcogenide. • Combination of first-principles calculations and experiment. • First synthesis of S-vacancy-enriched SnS. • Highly sensitive detection of methanol gas at room temperature. • Reveal the inner connection between theoretical calculation and experiment. This article considers the problem of modelling the lead-time demand for multiple slow-moving inventory items in the case when the available demand history is very short, and a large percentage of items has only zero records. The Bayesian approach is used to overcome these problems with the past demand data: it is proposed to use the beta-binomial model to predict the lead-time demand probability distribution for each item. Further, an extension of this model is developed which incorporates the prior information regarding the maximum expected probability of demand per period. Parameter estimation and Bayesian forecasting routines are derived for the new model. The performance of the proposed techniques is evaluated by a simulation study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IoT enables devices to be detected or remotely controlled across the network, creating opportunities for better integration of the physical world into computer-connected systems for remote control with improved accuracy and efficiency, as well as reducing the need for human intervention. These IoT devices collect useful data with the help of various technologies and then autonomously transmit the data to other devices. Smart homes are one of the best known examples of IoT devices on the market today. These intelligent automation systems perform a variety of tasks such as controlling lights, heaters, a smart thermostat, ventilation, air conditioning systems and devices such as washing machines, dryers, air purifiers, ovens, refrigerators and freezers that use Wi-Fi for remote monitoring. For the past two decades, the Internet of Things has continued to expand rapidly around the world. It is now used in many industries, in the health sector, in the automotive industry, in transport and elsewhere. The Internet of Things supports dozens of different IoT protocols. Some of them are Lora, Bluetooth, MQTT, NFC, ZigBee, Wifi, Cellural (2G / 3G / 4G / Gsm / Gprs). Depending on the application and the case of use, the most appropriate communication protocol is selected. In this dissertation, an IoT node was developed, a smart device for collecting environmental data. The device is designed to be able to connect various sensors for data collection, such as temperature, humidity, speed and air direction sensors, to send data using the IoT communication protocol LoRa, to a network router and then to a server, for processing and storage. The device was developed with the aim of low power consumption, as well as autonomy that would exceed 10 years of life in areas inaccessible to humans.

- Abstract
The Internet of Things paradigm aims to connect a very large number of smart objects located all around the world for increasing the knowledge about the environment. Low-power wireless communications are compulsory to reduce the smart object invasiveness and ensure reasonable duration of autonomous node. For this reason, several Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) technologies have been proposed in the recent past, because of their large range and low consumption. Most notably, the LoRaWAN solution emerged as the most accepted LPWAN and several research works appeared, discussing its advantages and limitations. However, very few, if any, discuss timing performance in a real scenario, considering not only the wireless frontend but also the wired backend. In this work, the authors implement a real use case based on a public LoRaWAN infrastructure and propose metrics to formally evaluate the delays at the application level (i.e. considering the whole infrastructure as a black box). The result is an average delay in the range 400-700 ms, and the proof that the delay is directly dependent on both the LoRaWAN backend and the connection speed of information endpoints. © 2019 IEEE.

• Sensory profiles by CATA were compared between high- and low-consumption consumers. • No significant difference was found in terms of the sensory product profiles. • Discrepancies were noticed in view of CATA term discrimination. • Attention should be paid to cognitive biases in consumer research. Check-All-That-Apply (CATA) is a very popular tool for rapid sensory profiling in consumer research. Yet, consumers' dietary habits, such as consumption frequency, has been neglected in regard to the impact, if any, on CATA question responses. The present work aimed to fill this gap, by focusing on the effect of different consumption frequencies with four studies (N = 686). Two categories of drink products were involved, chrysanthemum tea and instant coffee. For each category, two sets of products were prepared to constitute two levels of difference between samples (larger vs. smaller). Consumers were classified into high- and low-consumption groups according to their consumption frequencies of each focal product; the size of these subgroups ranged from 54 to 130. Overall, the two groups did not produce large discrepancies from each other when constructing sensory profiling of the tested samples with CATA questions as well as the stability of sample configurations. However, there were some nuances between them. In the evaluation of chrysanthemum tea samples, the higher-consumption group of consumers presented better discrimination than the lower-consumption group while this was reversed for coffee samples. This might be mainly attributed to the fact infrequent consumers were more sensitive to such negative attributes as "strong chrysanthemum smell for chrysanthemum samples, earthy for coffee samples". Further, despite the higher stability obtained with larger sizes of difference between samples in Studies 3 and 4, in general, the effect of size of differences within sample sets was not significant between different consumption groups. To more effectively contribute to refinement of methodological guidelines for CATA questions, more validation work is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; This communication deals with the lability of categorizations and its articulation with the research question. The research context is related to the future designed by a public policy aiming at being able to identify unoccupied housing to offer solutions regarding the lack of housing. The primary objective is creating, testing and validating a methodology to do so, and understanding why these housing are unoccupied. The data were collected in Charleroi, Belgium, between June 2014 and February 2015.At the first sight, language is primary both researched and unresearched as the identification of given, labeled, situation (unoccupied housing) is implemented without researching the (unexpected) diversity that might be related to it. The landlords are contacted on the basis of low water or electricity consumption for the concerned housing. During the research, several landlords refused categorizing the concerned housing as unoccupied, but agree for instance in categorizing this housing as uninhabited. Also, several landlords, immediately after having underlined that the concerned housing was in fact occupied, were asking what would be the consequences in the case the concerned housing would have been unoccupied. The objective of this communication is to shed light on what is as stake through this, including a critical analysis of the consequence of having missed to include from the beginning the issue of language in the research. Thus, a secondary analysis of the data was implemented and focused on the sociological dimension of language to understand when, who, and why landlords shifted from a label to another. The results help to reframe the research question and give more insight regarding the results of the primary research. This thesis studies the design and behavior of continuous-time very-high-frequency filters. The motivation of this work was the search for filtering solutions for the readchannel in recording and reproduction of data on magnetic media systems, with costs and consumption (total size less than 1 mm2 and consumption under 1mW/pole), lower than the available circuits. Accordingly, as was done in this work, the rapid development of microelectronics technology raised very significant efforts worldwide in order to investigate new techniques for implementing such filters in monolithic integrated circuit, especially in CMOS technology (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor). We present a comparative study on different hierarchical levels of the project, which led to the realization and characterization of solutions with the desired characteristics. In the first level, this study addresses the conceptual question of recording and transmission of signal and the choice of good mathematical models for the processing of information and minimization of error inherent in the approaches and in accordance with the principles of the characterized physical devices. The main work of this thesis is focused on the hierarchical levels of the architecture of the read channel and the integrated circuit implementation of its main block - the filtering block. At the architecture level of the read channel this work presents a comprehensive study on existing methodologies of adaptation and signal recovery of data on magnetic media. This project appears in the sequence of the proposed solution for a lowcost, low consumption, low voltage, low complexity, using CMOS digital technology for the performance of a DFE (Decision Feedback Equalization) based on the equalization of the signal using integrated analog filters in continuous time. At the project level of implementation of the filtering block and techniques for implementing filters and its building components, it was concluded that the technique based on transconductance circuits and capacitors, also known as gm-C filters is the most appropriate for the implementation of very-high-frequency adaptive filters. We defined in this lower level, two sub-levels of depth study for this thesis, namely: research and analysis of optimal structures for the design of state-space filters, and the study of techniques for the design of transconductance cells in digital CMOS circuits for the implementation of continuous time integrated analog filters. Following this study, we present and compare two filtering structures operating in the space of states, corresponding to two alternatives for achieving a realization of an adaptive equalizer by the use of a continuous-time third order allpass filter, as part of a read-channel for magnetic media devices. As a constituent part of these filters, we present a technique for the realization of transconductance circuits and for the implementation of linear capacitors using arrays of MOSFET transistors for signal processing in very-high-frequency integrated circuits using sub-micrometric CMOS technology. We present methods capable of automatic adjustment and compensation for deviation errors in respect to the nominal values of the components inherent to the tolerances of the fabrication process, for which we present the simulation and experimental measurement results obtained. Also as a result of this study, is the presentation of a circuit that provides a solution for the control of the head positioning on recording/playback systems of data on magnetic media. The proposed block is an adaptive first-order filter, based on the same transconductance circuits and equalization techniques proposed and used in the implementation of the adaptive filter for the equalization of the read channel. This filter was designed and included in an integrated circuit (Jaguar) used to control the positioning of the read-head done for ATMEL company in Colorado Springs, and part of a commercial product used in removable hard drives fabricated in partnership with a Scottish company.

The environmental awareness of the promoters is one of the fundamental pieces to enable the sustainable development of our cities and it is also a vital work of the technicians involved in the building process to encourage and enliven this awareness among our customers. We know the tools needed to provide housing systems to make them more efficient, by involving and implicating the promoter throughout the process. Furtehermore, we are able to design and build homes that contribute to improve the environment in which they are located, not only by reducing our own consumption but also through direct interaction processes on the boundary conditions as environmental decontamination. In this way, we can create homes that become vectors of sustainability which in turn could lead to synergies in their environment. The property shown below has been designed by LAC-architecture and it is located in a peri-urban area of the city of Granada, with a mediterranean-continental climate in which there are alternating periods of temperaturas below zero with others which are above 40 º C. Due to these conditions, the materials and systems that control the inner housing conditions are subjected to a very wide range of actions. Attached to these systems, a photocatalytic cement based coating will be used and will be able to become a degradation source of the harmful organic and inorganic substances coming into contact with it. These substances are the NOX, SOX, NH3, CO, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chlorinated organic compounds, aldehydes and aromatic polycondensation which are responsible for air pollution in our cities. This work deals with the feasibility study of a radio architecture dedicated to mobile WPAN applications at 60 GHz and characterized by a low power consumption. Data rates of the order of Gbps, high compactness and low power consumption are obtained by co-designing the antenna and the front-end. Before proposing the architecture matching the specification needs, a preliminary study of the propagation channel at 60 GHz is made. The two main standards IEEE 802.15.3c and 802.11.ad the channel are studied. The analysis of a single-band architecture suitable for low-power systems shows a data rate limitation when directional antennas are used in the standard channel 802.11.ad. To address this problem, a multi-band impulse architecture MBOOK using a non-coherent receiver is proposed. This architecture allows high throughput with the use of four sub-bands. It also leads to a low power consumption through the use of a non-coherent receiver and a differential transmitter topology avoiding combiners. To validate the concept of the proposed architecture, differential antennas dedicated to the differential architecture are designed. Patch antennas excited by differential microstrip lines fulfil the needs of the specifications but occupy a large area. In order to miniaturize the antenna, slot-fed patch antennas are designed using two orthogonal linear polarizations excited by a pair of differential inputs. To achieve the high directivity required in LOS scenarios without using antenna arrays or dielectric lenses, metamaterials are used. The antenna measurement is based on the realization of a WR-15 waveguide-to-microstrip line transition to connect the antenna to the network analyzer. The differential measurement of the antenna patch exhibits a good agreement with the simulated results. The TriQuint's TQP15 technology is used to design the various circuits of the front-end. The emitter architecture is validated once the overall consumption has been evaluated. This work ends with an evaluation of the throughput of the system taking into account the influence of the antenna and the propagation channel. This evaluation shows the potential of the architecture in terms of high throughput.

Non-destructive structural health monitoring of civil engineering structures is based on vibrations masurements of objects during dynamic tests or during theirexploitation. Wireless sensor networks are increasingly being used for this purpose. They make flexibleand inexpensive measurement systems because large cables to connect the sensors are avoided. This paper presents a vibration monitoring wireless system developed at the Faculty of Civil engineering in Belgrade. The structure and characteristics of the measurement system, based on low consumption electronic components and original embedded software real time operating system, are described.

This diploma thesis forms a study on the design of analog circuits for biomedical applications. We focus on the realization of low voltage transconductors and Bulk-Driven current amplifiers. Like all the differential circuits, the designers’ main concern for a differential transconductor is its linearity and the parameters that affect it. We propose a low voltage transconductor based on Flipped Voltage Follower topology and we simulate it in order to study the range of the linearity, frequency response and its behavior in temporally varying sinusoidal signal. The Bulk-Driven current amplifier presented in this thesis takes advantage of all degrees of freedom of a MOS transistor biased in weak inversion and in saturation. The Bulk-Driven technique is widely used in the design of low voltage supply, because it has reduced demands on voltage and is independent of restrictions related to the threshold voltage. Moreover, Bulk-Driven transistors are maintained in saturation for negative, zero and even small positive values of the bias voltage VBS. Consequently, they can process large input common mode signals and signals with large swing voltage range, a property that could not be achieved with conventional circuit techniques at low power supply voltages. However, the transconductance of a Bulk –Driven transistor is smaller and is sensitive to noise. Another disadvantage of the Bulk-Driven technique is that the polarity of the transistor is process related. The gain of the Bulk-Driven current amplifier varies exponentially. This property is important and it is used widely in systems of automatic gain control where input signals can range several orders of magnitude. The specifications of these circuits allow their appliance in biomedicine, because implanted systems, biosensors and hearing aids process signals of relatively small frequencies with low voltage supply.

[EN] During the last years, the preservation of the atmospheric environment has played an increasingly important role in society. The Diesel engine can be considered an environmentally friendly engine because of its low consumption and the subsequent carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reduction. However, in the near future it will face strong restrictive emission standards, which demand that the current nitrogen oxides (NOx) and soot emissions are halved. To comply with these restrictions new combustion concepts are emerging, such as PCCI (premixed charge compression ignition), in which the fuel burns in premixed conditions. Combustion noise is thus deteriorated and consequently end-users could be reluctant to drive vehicles powered with Diesel engines and their potential for environment preservation could be missed. In this paper, Diesel combustion is addressed through the analysis of performance, emissions and combustion noise in order to evaluate the suitability of PCCI engines for automotive applications. The results show that PCCI combustion offers great possibilities to fulfill future emission restrictions, but the engine noise is strongly deteriorated. The great sensitivity of users to this factor requires vehicle manufacturers to focus their efforts on the optimization of passive solutions for implementing the PCCI concept in passenger car and light-duty engines, even with the subsequent increase in the cost of vehicle. This aspect is less restrictive in heavy-duty engines, since the great benefits in emissions reduction compensate the deterioration of engine noise. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd., This work has been partially supported by Ministerio de Educacion y Ciencia through grant No. TRA2006-13782. The need securitaire links to the developpement of cards has flea clever impose strong quant pressures has the robustness of functioning of these implements afin to guarantee optimum performances in an environment continuously unsettle.
