The braconid Mirax insularis Muesebeck Is a koinoboint parasitoid of the coffee leafminer, Leucoptera coffeella Guérin-Méneville & Perrottet, in Puerto Rico. However, their reproductive capacity under artificial rearing conditions of the leafminer is not known. The objective of this study was to determine its reproductive potential in larvae of 1st and 2nd instar of L. coffeella. Reproductive capacity tests showed significant differences (test t-Student, P < 0.05) in the preference of M. insularis for 2nd instar larvae with 7% of parasitization, whereas in 1st instar it gained only 5%. The average oviposition of M. insularis increases three folds (14 eggs per female) in a period of 48 hours on 2nd instar when compared to 1st instar. In the analysis of variance, the treatments that showed a significant difference (Tukey test, P < 0.05) were those with densities of 60 to 80 parasitoids per experimental unit on 2nd instar. Correlation tests find that there is a correlation (R = 0.453, P = 0.547) among the progeny of M. insularis produced when using larvae of the 1st instar. However, there is a positive correlation (R = 0.981, P = 0.019) when using 2nd instar larvae. The parasitization of M. insularis is higher when performing inoculations with 60 to 80 parasitoids on 2nd instar, producing a progeny of 365 and 480 parasitoids, respectively.

The seasonal incidence of apple leaf miner (Lyonetia clerkella [L., 1758], Lepidoptera, Lyonetiidae) was investigated in four districts of Kashmir valley from March 2015 to April 2016. The prevalence of infestation was found higher in Srinagar (70.6 %) and Bandipora (65.3 %) as compared to Pulwama (9.3 %) and Baramulla (6.6 %). Infestation intensity was found at its peak during the month of May (2015) in all the four districts. In Srinagar, the percent infestation intensity during May (2015) was found to be 58.69 % (± 11.46 SD), while as in Bandipora, Pulwama and Baramulla, it was found as 55.71 % (± 12.59 SD), 6.04 % (± 1.97 SD) and 4.27 % (± 1.12 SD) respectively. Infestation of intensity was observed to decline linearly from the first week of June (2015) and disappeared completely with the beginning of winter season. Further, seven generations of L. clerkella were found under laboratory conditions. The1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generations completed in 39, 40, 37, 39, 45 and 48 days respectively. However, final generation (7th) was found relatively longer in duration, extended from the 4th week of September (2015) till April of the following year (2016) for about 204 days. In general, the life cycle of L. clerkella is similar to those described for other leaf miner species.

Lyonetia clerkella Linn. (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) is one of the most destructive insect pests in many parts of the Kashmir valley. In order to find an effective control agent against this lepidopteran pest, we determined the effectiveness of four synthetic insecticides, viz. Dichlorvas 76EC, Chlorpyriphos 20EC, Dimethoate 30EC, and Cartap hydrochloride 4% GR under both field as well as in laboratory conditions. The distilled water was also used as a control in the experiments. The mortality caused by these insecticides was recorded in both larval as well as in adult bioassay experiments. In the larval bioassay experiment, the highest mortality was caused by Cartap hydrochloride 4% GR (93.13%) followed by Dimethoate 30EC (88.97%), whereas in adult bioassay experiment, the highest mortality was caused by Dimethoate 30EC (94.03%). Results obtained in the present study are promising and may be used as a control strategy for the management of this severe leaf miner pest; however, no recommendations concerning the potential use of insecticides for apple orchards can be given, and further studies are needed in this respect, especially under field conditions.

A total of 781 species of Microlepidoptera belonging to 41 families are reported for the territory of Omsk Region. The most numerous is the Tortricidae family represented by 255 species, then Crambidae (94 species), Gelechiidae (70), Pyralidae (66), Pterophoridae (44), Depressariidae (32), Gracillariidae (29), Tineidae (25), Elachistidae (14), Adelidae and Elachistidae (8 species in each family), Yponomeutidae, Ypsolophidae, Ethmiidae and Cosmopterigidae (7 species in each family), Scythrididae and Oecophoridae (6 species in each family), Eriocraniidae (4), Nepticulidae, Momphidae and Epermeniidae (3 species in each family), Prodoxidae, Glyphipterigidae, Lyonetiidae and Choreutidae (2 species in each family), Opostegidae, Incurvariidae, Roeslerstammiidae, Argyresthiidae, Plutelliidae, Acrolepiidae, Bedelliidae, Parametriotidae, Chimabachidae, Cryptolechiidae, Batrachedridae, Blastobasidae, Autostichidae, Galacticidae (1 species in each family). 10 species are new to the Omsk Region. Agonopterix purpurea (Haworth, 1811) and Aethes flagellana (Duponchel, 1836) are reported from the territory of Omsk Region as new to the Asian Part of Russia; Fomoria weaveri (Stainton, 1855) reported from the territory of West Siberia for the first time., The author is thankful to colleagues and friends: S.Yu. The second сommunication on the Microlepidoptera fauna of Omsk Region of Russia includes information about 115 species. Most part of them is new to the regional fauna. The list includes 14 species recorded from the Asian part of Russia for the first time, among them Opostega salaciella (Treitschke, 1833), Myrmecozela ochraceella (Tengström, 1848), Bucculatrix ulmella Zeller, 1848,Euhyponomeutoides ribesiellus (Joannis, 1900), Glyphipterix equitella (Scopoli, 1763), Mendesia farinella (Thunberg, 1794), Elachista humilis Zeller, 1850, Elachista littoricola Le Marchand, 1938, Elachista pollutella Duponchel, 1843, Elachista pullicomella Zeller, 1839, Biselachista albidella (Nylander, 1848), Scythris flavilaterella (Fuchs, 1886), Pyroderces argyrogrammos (Zeller, 1847), Epermenia iniquella (Wocke, 1867).

The coffee leaf miner Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville & Perrottet) is a key pest in coffee producing countries. During their development, the larvae feed on the palisade parenchyma of the leaves, forming mines and necrotic areas. As a result, the photosynthetic area of the plant decreases, affecting coffee production. Despite the severity of the damage caused by coffee leaf miner (CLM), morphological aspects of the larval development and the adult genitalia remain unknown. This work presents the first morphological description of the four larval instars and the adult genitalia of L. coffeella. In each larval instar, we measured the Mean ± SD (mm) of the cephalic capsules (1st 0,14±0,03; 2nd 0,25±0,04; 3rd 0,32±0,03; 4th 0,42±0,03) and observed the following morphological details: primary setae, prolegs, crochets and ecdysial line of the cephalic capsule. In the adults, we show how to differentiate adult sexing and observed the sexual structures present in both genitalia: male - bulbus ejaculatorius, valva, gnathos and aedeagus, and female - ovipositor, sclerite and corpus bursae.

Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) and Leucoptera coffeella Guerin-Meneville (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) are major pests of coffee. Diamides, are a new group of insecticides that activate ryanodine receptors causing muscle contraction, and have been used to control H. hampei and L. coffeella. Bioassay methods need to be standardized for insecticide susceptibility studies on H. hampei with cyantraniliprole and L. coffeella with chlorantraniliprole. Four bioassay methods for H. hampei (topical application with a microsyringe, artificial diet, immersion of green coffee fruits in insecticide solution, and coffee branch bagging) and five for L. coffeella (spraying coffee seedlings, immersion of coffee leaves, immersion of filter paper and topical application with microsyringe were evaluated. The best performing method was selected based on the greater slope (β) of the probit curve, lower LC50, lower natural mortality in the control, and lower variance. The results showed that the best methods for bioassays were the artificial diet for H. hampei and spraying of coffee seedlings for L. coffeella.

Lyonetia lediWocke, 1859 (Lyonetiidae), was hitherto considered as a boreal species with a circumpolar distribution pattern and relict populations in isolated peat bogs north-east of the Alps (Austria, Czech Republic, Germany). In Europe it is known as a leaf-miner onRhododendron tomentosumStokes ex Harmaja (Ericaceae) as the primary host-plant and alsoMyrica galeL. (Myricaceae). The first record ofL. ledifrom the Swiss Alps onRhododendron ferrugineumL., the famous Alpenrose, indicates an ancient host-plant switch during postglacial periods whenR. tomentosumandR. ferrugineumshared habitat in the prealps. Conspecificity with northern populations is supported by the adult morphology and supplementing DNA barcodes (mtDNA COI gene).L. lediis the first obligatory leaf-mining species onR. ferrugineum. Details of the life-history and habitat are described and figured. The record finally substantiates the probability of an autochthonous population in Carinthia (Austria), from where the species was recently published as new to the Alps.

Equally important is the sexing of the adult, in experiments aiming efficient ways to control CLM, as the study of pheromone-based control methods. The coffee leaf miner (CLM) Leucoptera coffeella moth is a major threat to coffee production. Insect damage is related to the feeding behavior of the larvae on the leaf. During the immature life stages, the insect feeds in the mesophyll, triggering necrosis and causing loss of photosynthetic capacity, defoliation, and significant yield loss to coffee crops. Chemical control is mandatory to sustain the coffee production chain, though market requirements move towards conscious consumption, claiming for more sustainable methods. In this overview, we discuss aspects about the CLM concerning biology, history, geographical distribution, economic impacts, and the most relevant control strategies in progress. Insights to develop an integrate approach for a safer and eco-friendly control of the CLM are discussed, including bio-extracts, nanotechnology, pheromones, and tolerant cultivars.

Mikrolepidopteren gehörten seit der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zum Gegenstand entomologischer Forschung in Eberswalde. Zentren der Forschung waren zunächst die Forstlichen Lehranstalten und Institute, später auch das Deutsche Entomologische Institut. Außerdem war die Eberswalder Gegend stets Anziehungspunkt für viele Mikrolepidopteren-Spezialisten, die nicht an einschlägigen wissenschaftlichen Instituten arbeiteten. In der vorgelegten Arbeit werden die Forschungsergebnisse aus der Vergangenheit regionalfaunistisch ausgewertet und durch Ergebnisse aktueller faunistischer Forschungen zu einem Verzeichnis der Microlepidoptera der Diluviallandschaften um Eberswalde ergänzt. Das Verzeichnis umfasst mit 863 Arten aus 47 Familien 57 % der im Land Brandenburg nachgewiesenen Mikrolepidopteren-Arten, darunter ein Neufund für Deutschland: Clepsis coriacanus; 13 Neufunde für das Land Brandenburg: Coleophora adjectella, Colephora sylvaticella, Coleophora ramosella, Mompha terminella, Monochroa arundinetella, Bryotropha umbrosella, Anarsia innoxiella, Telephila schmidtiellus, Cydia gemmiferana, Acrobasis legatea, Pammene herrichiana, Pammene ignorata, Schreckensteinia festaliella; und 45 Wiederfunde im Land Brandenburg. Die Autoren konnten 332 Arten erstmals im Eberswalder Raum nachweisen. Für 531 Arten wurden ältere/historische Nachweise ausgewertet. Das Vorkommen von 408 dieser Arten konnte bestätigt werden. Leaf-mining by insects usually have limited detrimental consequences on host-trees. Yet,Leucoptera malifoliella, a common leaf-mining moth on Rosaceae, is among those leaf-mining species that can exhibit occasional, sometimes even regular eruptive impacts on their hosts, in particular on apple trees. Here, we address the different causes involved in a particular case of nascent outbreak of this moth observed in the wild that is independently of the artificial conditions that prevail in densely planted apple orchards. Relevantly analyzing the reasons of eruptive outbreaks remains difficult however, as multiple causes are involved and their respective influences on mining-impact level are largely intermingled. Thus, in order to disentangle the respective contributions of each cause in quantitative terms, a specifically dedicated approach, the “Melba” procedure, was implemented and applied to the data issued from an exhaustive sampling of the foliage of the studied wild apple-tree. Out of the three main causal components of mining impact level, neither the average clutch-size nor the severity of mated females in selecting those leaves acceptable for oviposition substantially differ from the ranges of values encountered in other leaf-mining species having high but non eruptive mining impacts on their respective hosts. In fact, the recorded nascent outbreak is mainly attributable to the unusually high density of mated females attracted to the investigated host tree. Accordingly, metapopulation effects obviously play a major role in triggering the recorded eruptive impact.

Despite the species richness of Ephydridae world-wide (2000 species) and its prominent environmental roles as a minor pest and as a food for wildlife, only 13 species have been recorded from Saudi Arabia. Between 2012 and 2016, a biodiversity study of Diptera was conducted at Jazan, Asir, and Najran in south-western Saudi Arabia, at 22 sites, was performed mainly using Malaise traps and sweep nets. In this study, 43 known species of Ephydridae were identified, 37 of them for the first time from southwestern Saudi Arabia and 16 from Arabian Peninsula. This brings the total number of Ephydridae species in Saudi Arabia to 49 (including previous records). There were a further four species, which could not be identified authoritatively to species level. A list of all species of Ephydridae recorded from Saudi Arabia is appended. Images of thirty-two species are presented. The species recorded in this study are more Palaearctic in origin as compared to other regions. Biological information (where known) and world-wide distribution are included. This study has added new records to the Saudi Arabian checklist of Ephydridae, which will provide the basis for systematic studies and fauna analyses of future work on the family. The need for further field and laboratory work and surveillance is highlighted.

Use of the Bt insect-resistance gene has provided substantial economic and ecological benefits. Full utilization of transgenic poplars requires a comprehensive understanding of the growth-related phenotypic characteristics and ecological risks associated with of genetically modified trees. In the present study, we assessed the effects of transgenic poplar 741 with different insect-resistant genes on plant growth and arthropod communities in the field. Transgenic lines carrying the Cry1Ac and Cry3A genes were used as model lines, and non-transgenic poplar 741 was used as a control. Over a period of 6 years, we analyzed plant growth and transcriptomic data, and monitored arthropod richness and abundance in an experimental forest comparing transgenic and control lines. Our results indicate that the Pb29 line had a similar plant height to CK, but a significantly lower diameter at breast height (DBH) than CK. The plant height and DBH of the CC84 line were slightly higher than those of CK, but the differences were not significant. Transcriptome data analysis showed downregulated and upregulated expression of growth hormone-related genes and lignin synthesis-related genes, respectively, in the Pb29 line compared with CK and the CC84 line. The survey data obtained in this study showed that annual trends in arthropod numbers in the ecosystem were consistent among transgenic poplar 741 and control lines, gradually decreasing with time since planting. The Cry1Ac line has selective resistance to Lepidoptera and exerted strong toxic effects on Arctiidae, Tortricidae, and Notodontidae, but had no obvious effects on Lyonetiidae or Geometridae. The Cry3A line exhibited significant resistance to coleopterans only in 2016 when the abundance of coleopteran insects was high. Both lines exhibited inhibitory effects on non-target pests. The two transgenic lines were similar to the control with respect to arthropod community structure, and there were no significant differences in arthropod diversity indices between transgenic and control lines, although richness was slightly higher for the Cry3A line than for the control. The results of this study showed that the insertion of Bt genes had no apparent inhibitory effect on the growth of poplar 741. Also, there was no adverse environmental impact of transgenic poplar 741 on ecosystem arthropod communities compared with conventional poplar 741.

Exegetia crocea Braun, 1918, (Yponomeutoidea: Lyonetiidae), type species of Exegetia Braun, 1918, n. syn., is transferred to Pigritia Clemens, 1860 (Gelechioidea: Blastobasidae). Pigritia crocea (Braun, 1918), n. comb., is redescribed, and morphological evidence is provided in support of its new generic and familial assignment. A habitus image of the male holotype and illustrations of the male genitalia and wing venation of a conspecific male are included.

The coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Guerin-Meneville & Perrottet, 1842), probably infested coffee plants in Neotropical America during the 19th century. The species subsequently became a key pest of coffee plants in Brazil, but not in Colombia, the two main coffee producers in the region. The contrasting importance of the coffee leaf miner in Brazil and Colombia may be the result of the evolutionary and demographic history of this species. Therefore, our goal was to test two alternative hypotheses regarding the possible genetic origins of this species: 1) leaf miners in both countries share the same origin and 2) the leaf miner arrived in both countries independently from distinct sources and subsequently diversified without genetic exchange between countries. Thus, DNA sequence data of 21 populations were collected (Brazil, 16; Colombia, 5), and partial sequences of their cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), cytochrome b (Cytb), and the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region were obtained to test these hypotheses. Both nuclear and mitochondrial molecular markers showed low nucleotide diversity. Analyses of molecular variance indicated higher variability within population in both concatenated mitochondrial genes and ITS region (70.57 and 84.01%, respectively). Finally, geno/haplotype networks showed each central geno/haplotypes that displayed high frequency and were distributed widely in both countries. Low-frequency geno/haplotypes were at tip positions connected to the central geno/haplotypes through single mutation steps, suggesting that the Neotropical coffee leaf miner in both Brazil and Colombia consists of a single species and exhibits a common and recent genetic origin.

Lyonetia ledi Wocke, 1859 Ein ��usserst erstaunlicher Fund wurde mittels Barcode (Barcodekenndaten in BOLD: KLM Lep 12335/LEAST1580-18) erkannt (leg. Wieser, det. BOLD). Lyonetia ledi ist ausschliesslich als Art von Hochmooren bekannt und lebt im Larvenstadium minierend in den Bl��ttern von Rhododendron palustre (syn. Ledum palustre) dem Sumpfporst und Myrica gale, dem Gagelstrauch (BENGTSON & JOHANSSON 2011). Beide Pflanzenarten sind aus K��rnten nicht bekannt (HARTL et al. 1992)! Weiters ist der Fundort im Wacholderhain bei Stein im Oberen Drautal fernab eines passenden Lebensraumes. Bisher ist kein Fund dieser Kleinschmetterlingsart s��dlich des Alpenhauptkammes bekannt geworden (m��ndl. Mitteilung P. Huemer). Die Artzugeh��rigkeit ist laut Barcode unbestreitbar. Etiketten- und Fundortverwechslung k��nnen nach detaillierter Recherche ausgeschlossen werden. Es gab keinerlei Aufsammlungen durch den Autor in potentiellen Vorkommensgebieten im in Frage kommenden Zeitraum und es gibt keine Sammlungsbest��nde von L. ledi im Landesmuseum K��rnten. Weitere Erhebungen am Fundort ergaben bisher keinen zus��tzlichen Nachweis. Es ist dies ein ��hnlich schwer erkl��rbarer Fund wie von der ebenfalls im Oberen Drautal bei Kleblach in einem Einzelexemplar nachgewiesenen Stathmopodidae Cuprina fuscella (WIESER 2004). Leucoptera spartifoliella (H��bner, [1813]) DESCHKA 1983 schreibt ausf��hrlich ��ber die Biologie und Anatomie der Art. L. spartifoliella lebt monophag minierend in den St��ngeln von Cytisus scoparius (BENGTSON & JOHANSSON 2011), dem Besenginster. Der Nachweis gelang im Rahmen eines ���Publikumsleuchtens��� im Freilichtmuseum von Maria Saal. Im Rahmen dieser seit mehreren Jahren durchgef��hrten Veranstaltung erhalten Besucher die M��glichkeit an wissenschaftlichen Erhebungen der Nachtfalterfauna durch die zoologische Abteilung des K��rntner Landesmuseums teilzunehmen. Besenginster ist laut HARTL et al. 1992 im K��rntner Unterland weit verbreitet, wenn auch nicht ��berall autochthon, so wurde er vielfach als B��schungsbefestigung und bei der Anlage von Wild��sungsfl��chen verwendet und ausgebracht. Phyllobrostis minoica sp. n. is described from Crete, Greece. It belongs to the P. daphneella group and seems to be related to P. jedmella Chrétien. The two species are clearly distinguishable by the external characters and by the male genitalia. The adult habitus and male and female genitalia of the new species are illustrated.
