Background: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and multiple sclerosis (MS) often manifest similar symptoms. However, the distinction between the two diseases is particularly important for different therapies. The aim of this study is to determine whether these diseases can be distinguished based on cerebral iron deposits in the deep grey matter and whether there is a correlation between iron deposits, local deep grey matter atrophy and clinical severity of the disease. Methods: 40 patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), 20 patients with NMO and 20 healthy subjects were examined at the MRI department of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague from December 2013 to March 2015. All patients with RRMS fulfilled the revised McDonald criteria, the diagnosis of NMO was based on Wingerchuk criteria. All 20 patients with NMO had positive AQP4-IgG. Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and volumometry of individual deep gray matter structures were performed. All patients with NMO and MS underwent simultaneous examination by a specialist in demyelinating diseases. Neurological disability was assessed by the Kurtzke Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Results: Patients with NMO have higher magnetic susceptibility values in the substantia nigra compared to healthy controls. Patients with RRMS...

The large set of scientific activities supported by MRI includes, among others, the research of water and mineral compounds transported within a plant, the investigation of cellular processes, and the examination of the growth and development of plants. MRI is a method of major importance for the measurement of early somatic embryos (ESE) during cultivation, and in this respect it offers several significant benefits discussed within this paper. We present the following procedures: non-destructive measurement of the volume and content of water during cultivation; exact three-dimensional differentiation between the ESEs and the medium; investigation of the influence of ions and the change of relaxation times during cultivation; and multiparametric segmentation of MR images to differentiate between embryogenic and non-embryogenic cells. An interesting technique consists in two-parameter imaging of the relaxation times of the callus; this method is characterized by tissue changes during cultivation at a microscopic level, which can be monitored non-destructively.

The peri-Atlantic Arctic, one of the most sensitive components of the Earth climate system, experienced pronounced climatic fluctuations during the Holocene. Several external forcings were considered responsible for these variations, including decline of insolation on the Northern Hemisphere, changes in distribution of land ice mass, explosive volcanism, or changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation. In order to explore the driving mechanisms of the peri-Atlantic Arctic environmental variability, three sites located in different parts of the region were selected for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions with focus on extracting the climatic information. With this intention, sedimentary cores from i) Lake Garmaksla, Central Svalbard, ii) Jarfjorden, northeastern Norway, and iii) Kobbefjord area, southwestern Greenland, were retrieved and subjected to multi-proxy investigation. The absolute chronostratigraphic framework was established by comprehensive radiocarbon (14 C) and short-lived radioisotopes (210 Pb, 137 Cs) dating. Further analyses include measurements of magnetic susceptibility, grain size distribution, element composition by means of X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and elements bound to organic matter, i.e. organic carbon, nitrogen, sulphur and biogenic silica. The relationships between the...

We have performed detailed measurements of magnetic and dielectric properties of high quality magnetite (Fe3O4) single crystals in weak magnetic and electric fields. These measurements can reveal details of phase transitions and other features that are not yet fully understood. We focused not only at the Verwey transition - a well known phase transition taking place at about 120 K in stoichiometric samples - but we also explored and described new relaxation effects in magnetite at low temperatures. The low-temperature properties were also found to be exceptionally sensitive to sample quality, stoichiometry and homogeneity. The results presented in this thesis were acquired on sensitive non-commercial SQUID magnetometer complemented by four-probe dielectric spectroscopy and dc conductivity measurements.

A. Zárubová: Měření magnetických vlastností environmentálních vzorků 1 ENGLISH ABSTRACT This bachelor's thesis presents briefly principles and examples of applications of magnetic measurements in environmental studies. Environmental magnetism is based on determination of iron oxides, their content, concentration and grain size. This information can be interpreted in terms of particle origin, transport or diagenesis. The results can provide information on, e.g., climatic changes in the past, short-term events influencing our environment (e.g., volcanic eruptions) or about contemporary problems associated with human activity (environmental pollution). In the last case, environmental magnetism does not intend to replace geochemical methods, but the main aim is to provide fast and easily available additional information, which helps us to be more effective in mapping contaminated areas, monitoring progression of pollution or modeling transport processes of contaminants. Magnetometry is currently intensively used for mapping contamination of atmosphere, soils and sediments; it can be used in defining long-term levels of contamination, individual pollution sources and their contribution to the overall pollution. This thesis provides a brief overview of the physical basics of environmental magnetism and examples...

The aim of this thesis is briefly summarize the application of magnetic susceptibility in study of soil pollution. The manuscript is based on scientific articles focusing on the above mentioned subject. In each chapter I deal with magnetic properties of rocks and minerals, in particular the magnetic susceptibility. Magnetic susceptibility in a weak magnetic field is one of the most important parameters, which indicates a change in the concentration of ferimagnetics in soils and sediments (Kapička et al., 2004). Main magnetic minerals are described with respect to their occurrence in soils and anthropogenic origin. Both field and laboratory instruments for the measurement of magnetic susceptibility are also described. In the final chapter I deal with two case studies, where magnetic susceptibility measurements were used in environmental study. I compare two different geographical areas in terms of pollution, relatively clean Krkonoše Mountains National Park and industrially polluted Upper Silesia. Keywords: antropogenic ferimagnetics, magnetic susceptibility, magnetic minerals

Study is focused on the numerical modeling of fly-ash transport in three sands, which was experimentally studied in the laboratory. Sands were packed in glass cylinders with diameter of 5.52 cm and height of 18 cm. Sands were also packed in plastic cylinders with diameter of 30 cm and height of 40 cm. The fly-ash and pulse infiltrations were applied on the top of all cylinders. Visually observed and gravimetrically evaluated fly-ash migration in small cylinders corresponded to fly-ash mobility in large columns detected using the SM400 Kappameter. The HYDRUS-1D code was used to simulate observed fly-ash transport. Parameters of soil hydraulic functions were either obtained using the Tempe cells and the RETC program or estimated using numerical inversion of transient water flow data measured in both types of columns using HYDRUS-1D. Parameters characterizing colloid transport in sands were then estimated from the final fly-ash distribution in sandy columns using attachment/detachment concept in HYDRUS-1D. Fly-ash mobility increased with increasing sand particle sizes, e.g. pore sizes. Particle sizes and pore water velocity influenced the attachment coefficient, which was calculated assuming filtration theory. The same longitudinal dispersivity, sticking efficiency and detachment coefficient sufficiently characterized fly-ash behavior in all sands.

- Abstract
Hlavním cílem předkládané práce bylo zmapovat a posoudit kontaminaci půd Ostravy těžkými kovy pomocí odběru vzorků a jejich následnou analýzou pomocí metody – Magnetická susceptibilita., Industrial actual in the Ostrava district has long history. After roughly two-hundred years industrial activity remained large quantity of negative consequences in this area, which today inherently belong to character of local landscape. Broad environmental issue is connected with industry: pollution of environment, redevelopment of so polluted landscape. One of the most important problems is the emission of small particles and its influence on the trace metals contamination. Main task of this work was to map and write up contamination of trace metals in Ostrava, by sampling of soil and their subsequent analysis by virtue of magnetic susceptibility.

19. Analýza vybraných artefaktů v difuzních magneticko-rezonančních měřeních
- Abstract
Závěrem práce jsou uvedeny praktické aplikace, při kterých byly uplatněny navržené metody., The presented dissertation thesis analyses artefacts in diffusion-weighted images. In medical practice, the artefacts can impede the diagnostics of pathological tissues and, therefore, need to be eliminated. As the first step within the thesis, an analysis of the most frequent artefacts in diffusion-weighted images is performed, and the hitherto known approaches to artefact elimination are described. In order to facilitate the reduction of artefacts caused by the inhomogeneity of the static magnetic field and induced by eddy currents, a novel three-measurement method is shown. This technique will find application especially in measuring the diffusion coefficient of isotropic materials. At this point, it is important to note that a significant and commonly found problem is the magnetic susceptibility artefact; different magnetic susceptibility values at the boundary between two materials can cause magnetic field inhomogeneities and even complete loss of the signal. Therefore, we designed a novel method for the measurement of magnetic susceptibility in various samples of magnetically incompatible materials, which do not produce any MR signal. The technique was experimentally verified using a set of differently shaped diamagnetic and paramagnetic samples. In addition to the magnetic susceptibility problem, the thesis presents artefacts such as noise, motion-induced items, hardware limitations, chemical shift, and the dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the temperature. To enable precise measurement of the diffusion coefficient, we proposed a thermal system; in the experiment, it was determined that when the measurement error does not exceed 5%, the temperature change should not be higher than 0,1 °C. In the final sections of the thesis, practical application examples involving the designed methods are shown.

- Abstract
Tématem bakalářské práce je měření magnetické susceptibility technikami nukleární magnetické rezonance. Různé materiály v silném magnetickém poli toto pole ovlivňují a deformují. Velikost a tvar deformace způsobuje susceptibilita. V této práci je vytvořen 2D numerický model vzorku v magnetickém poli 4,7 T. Je provedeno srovnání s hodnotami z tomografického měření. V druhé části je vytvořen 3D numerický model diamagnetického paramagnetického materiálu a srovnání s reálně změřenými hodnotami, The Bachelor thesis deals with measuring magnetic susceptibility by means of nuclear magnetic resonance. Magnetic field is affected and deformed by various materials. The range and the shape of the deformation is caused by susceptibility. The thesis contains a 2D numerical model of a sample in a magnetic field 4.7 T. The results are compared with values obtained by a tomographic measurement. The second part of the thesis contains a 3D numerical model of diamagnetic and paramagnetic material. Moreover, a comparison with values measured in reality is drawn.

28. Numerické modelování a měření magnetické susceptibility nehomogenních materiálů technikami NMR
- Abstract
