The findings indicate that the BExo substantially alleviated discomfort and physical exertion in the low back, shoulders and knees, thereby enhancing an ergonomic posture and reducing fatigue. These results underscore the potential of passive exoskeletons to boost workers' safety and efficiency, providing valuable insights for future ergonomic strategies in industrial settings. OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSWhen compared to not using a soft-hand exoskeleton, the IronHand ® caused both increases and decreases in forearm muscle activity while completing automotive assembly tasks. Surprisingly, although there were reductions in muscle activity when wearing the IronHand ® , only a few of these decreases resulted in muscle activity changing such that they fell to below recommended ergonomic thresholds. Despite this, some individuals in our study clearly benefited from the device, and this suggests that there is potential for widespread use of such a device if fine tuned to the individual and task demands. Much work is still required for a design that will allow for optimal physical benefit.

One of the most actual and consistent drivers for the industry is sustainability, which includes three main pillars: environment, economics, and society. While numerous methods for environmental and economic sustainability assessment have been proposed, social sustainability assessment is still lacking in structured methods and tools, although human has always played a key role. Moreover, technological development is pushing the industrial world toward a new paradigm, the "Industry 4.0," which embeds topics such as data digitalization, cyber-physical systems, and machine learning. It entails significant changes in human resources management, without reducing their importance. Humans were part of the manufacturing system from the first industrial revolution, and no automation or digitalization can be possible without humans. The industry can no longer underestimate the reasonable application of human factors and ergonomics principles to the workplace. For this purpose, the paper provides a novel transdisciplinary engineering method to measure and promote social sustainability on production sites. It exploits Internet of Things technology to support the (re)design of manufacturing processes and plants toward human-centered connected factories. To improve the workers' well-being has positive effects on their health, satisfaction, and performance. The method has been implemented in a real industrial case study within the footwear industry. There are five generally recognized manufacturing systems with Toyota Production System (TPS) being the most recent manufacturing system design. The TPS is functionally and operationally different from any other manufacturing system. The TPS uses less of everything when compared to the common functional job shop manufacturing system. In addition, the implementation of TPS by a manufacturer results in fewer defects; and therefore, an increase in quality. The fundamentals of the TPS are: manufacturing and assembly cells, pull system methodology, 100% good quality, on-time delivery every time, respect for people, and maximum utilization of non-depreciable resources—people and raw materials. The Toyota Production System uses its cellular manufacturing subsystem for increased productivity. The cellular manufacturing subsystem is flexible while designed to sproduce superior quality products, on-time, at the lowest possible cost, and on a continuous basis. This work examined the physical demands associated with 4 commercially available direct current right-angle power tools along with their computer controlled fastening strategies. Physical demands were measured via an external instrumented handle that could also control the trigger of each tool. Data revealed that forces recorded by the external handle for each of the 4 tools differed. Independent of Joint-Hardness and Target Torque the Atlas Copco TurboTight® and Cleco Low Torque Reaction fastening strategies, both using a rapid spindle-head rotation strategy, produced the lowest peak and impulse force, respectfully, when compared to the 2 tools that were designed to fasten with a longer duration. This work has shown that short duration fastening strategies provide an ergonomics benefit to the users as it requires less force to operate, such force reduction in previous research has been linked to reduced handle displacement and lower muscle effort. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the physical demands associated with three direct current powered right-angle power tool tightening strategies at various fastener-location-orientations, target torques and joint-hardness. Physical demands were measured using surface electromyography, handle force and upper body kinematics. Results identified TurboTight®, a rapid and short duration fastening strategy, to produce lower handle force impulse, less joint angle displacement, and lower EMG magnitudes when compared to the longer duration fastening strategies tested. The reduced magnitudes associated with TurboTight®, independent of fastener-location-orientations, target torques and joint-hardness, indicate a lower physical demand on power tool operators, providing a significant ergonomic benefit when compared to the slower fastening strategies.
