Supporting ageing in place, quality of life, and activity engagement are public health priorities for people with dementia. The importance of maintaining opportunities for meaningful activities has been widely acknowledged for those with dementia in long-term care, but little is known about what makes activities meaningful for, and how they are experienced by, people with different types of dementia in their own homes. This study used focussed ethnographic methods to explore the motivations and meanings of everyday activity engagement within the homes of 10 people with memory-led Alzheimer's disease and 10 people with posterior cortical atrophy. While participants' interactions with their everyday environments were challenged by their diagnoses, they were all finding ways to continue meaning-making via various activities. The main findings are encapsulated in three themes: (1) The fun and the function of activities; (2) Reciprocities of care, and (3) The constitution and continuity of (a changing) self. Ongoing engagement with both fun and functional activities offered participants living with different dementias opportunities to connect with others, to offer care and support (as well as receive it), and to maintain a sense of self and identity. Implications are discussed regarding the development and delivery of tailored interventions and support to enable continued engagement in meaningful activities for people with different types of dementia living in the community. Belonging is a human need and an essential component of community integration following homelessness. Little is known about the range of studies exploring experiences of belonging following homelessness. We conducted this systematic review and meta-aggregation to address this gap using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines (PRISMA). We searched seven databases (EMBASE; PsychINFO; CINAHL; Medline; AMED; Nursing and Allied Health Database; and Sociological Abstracts), combining three main concepts: 1) homelessness; 2) belonging; and 3) transition. The search identified 2504 titles and abstracts. Of these, we included 33 studies in our review and meta-aggregation. Our meta-aggregation generated four themes describing experiences of belonging following homelessness: 1) developing a sense of belonging is a challenging process in the transition to housing; 2) shifting connections and finding new belonging; 3) belonging through engaging in meaningful activities; and 4) housing as a foundation for connection. These findings indicate that housing stability creates opportunities to belong but developing a sense of belonging is a difficult process involving changes in social networks facilitated by engaging with others in meaningful activities. BackgroundParticipation and active engagement in meaningful activities support the emotional and physical well-being of older adults. In 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic altered lives, including the ability to participate in meaningful activities. This study compared meaningful activity engagement before and at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in a nationally representative, diverse sample >65 years between 2015 and 2020.MethodsWe described the proportions and characteristics of National Health and Aging Trends Study participants and their engagement in four activities: visiting friends or family, attending religious services, participating in clubs/classes/other organized activities, and going out for enjoyment. We used mixed effects logistic regressions to compare probabilities of activity engagement before 2020 and in 2020, adjusting for age, sex, functional status, income, geographic region, anxiety-depression, and transportation issues.ResultsOf 6815 participants in 2015, the mean age was 77.7 (7.6) years; 57% of participants were female; 22% were Black, 5% Hispanic, 2% were American Indian, and 1% were Asian; 20% had disability; and median income was $33,000. Previous research has shown that young adult relatives of parents with dementia experience strain through increased responsibility and changed relationships in the family with potential consequences for their emotional, mental and physical well-being. Less is known about how young adult relatives experience their participation in everyday activities typically associated with young adulthood and how their participation is affected by the parent´s dementia. This study explores young adult relatives' experiences of participation in everyday activities and how their participation was affected by having a parent with dementia. The study followed a qualitative, descriptive approach. Semi-structured individual interviews with 11 young adult relatives (aged 21 – 31) of parents with dementia were conducted. The interviews were analysed using Kirsti Malterud's iterative cross case analysis method 'Systematic text condensation'. The analysis identified three categories: Dilemmas of choosing, Not having a choice and Reversal of roles. The young adult relatives experienced dilemmas and constraints regarding participation in everyday activities usually related to young adulthood. They navigated situations where they were to choose between the parent with dementia and their own everyday activities and they often downgraded or cancelled participation in own activities related to leisure time, school, job and career. Moreover, their participation seemed affected by chores and responsibilities resulting in a lack of energy leading them to forego social activities in particular or change their choice of activities. The young adult relatives need help and support in their everyday lives. Health care professionals are encouraged to focus on relieving them from some of the responsibilities and practical tasks enabling them to live their own lives as young adults, while being part of the family and contributing towards the responsibilities and tasks with which they can cope. This research project investigated how family carers in Norway experienced delivering iCST, their need for supervision and the potential for co-occupation. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to understand the experiences of 11 carers using iCST for 8 wk. Three semi-structured interviews were conducted with each participant, including a pre-assessment of caregiver burden and a rating of dementia severity. Most carers described the manual as self-instructive. Some felt overwhelmed when starting iCST. It was important to plan and individualise the sessions to the specific needs of the person with dementia. After delivering iCST the carers described new insights into the person with dementia's resources and challenges. Obstacles to doing iCST were related to the context, the manual or to specific challenges linked to the person with dementia or to the carer. Most participants described positive experiences, in which shared interaction, engagement and mastery were common. When the carer understands the iCST programme as a tool and adapts it to the specific needs of the person with dementia then co-occupation and positive interactions happen. Healthy aging requires the maintenance of good physical and cognitive activity. However, as they age, older adults often experience a decline in physical and cognitive activity, leading to a more sedentary lifestyle. Some older adults may not have a choice but to become increasingly sedentary as they age due to injury or deteriorated physicality. As such, they require assistive technologies to aid in their daily lives and activities to maintain healthy cognitive function. Social Robots are a newer form of assistive technology, specifically designed for social interactions and gameplay. As with other assistive technologies, compliance barriers to their acceptance and use for meaningful, seated activities among older adults are expected. To better explore this phenomenon, improve quality of life and understand what drives older adults to accept and use newer forms of technology like social robots, this conceptual paper conjoins two theoretical frameworks: The Activity Theory of Aging (ATA) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). As social robots hold great promise for improving the quality of life for older adults, exploring what driving factors could enable their greater acceptance and use is essential to furthering this field of study within Australia. ObjectivesTo examine how people living with dementia at home engage in meaningful activities, a critical component of quality of life.DesignEthnographic study design using semistructured interviews, participant-observation, and ethnographic analysis.Setting and participantsHome setting. People living with dementia were recruited through 3 geriatrics programs in the San Francisco Bay Area, along with 1 primary live-in care partner for each. Participants were purposively sampled to maximize heterogeneity of dementia severity and life experience.MeasurementsWe asked participants to self-identify and report meaningful activity engagement prior to dementia onset and during the study period using a structured questionnaire, semistructured dyadic interviews, and observed engagement in activities. Home visits were audio-recorded, transcribed, and inductively analyzed using thematic analysis.ResultsTwenty-one people living with dementia (mean age 84 years, 38% women) and 20 care partners (59 years, 85% women), including 40% professionals, 35% spouse/partners, and 15% adult children. Overarching theme: specific activities changed over time but underlying sources of meaning and identity remained stable. As dementia progressed, meaningful activity engagement took 3 pathways. Pathway 1: Activities continued with minimal adaptation when engagement demanded little functional or cognitive ability (eg, watching football on TV). Pathway 2: care partners adapted or replaced activities when engagement required greater functional or cognitive abilities (eg, traveling overseas). This pathway was associated with caregiving experience, nursing training, and strong social support structures. Pathway 3: care partners discontinued meaningful activity engagement. Discontinuation was associated with severe caregiver burden, coupled with illness, injury, or competing caregiving demands severe enough to impact their ability to facilitate activities.Conclusions and implicationsFor people living with dementia at home, underlying sources of meaning and identity remains stable despite changes in meaningful activity engagement. Many of the factors associated with adaptation vs discontinuation over time are modifiable and can serve as targets for intervention.

A subset of 10 patients took part in qualitative 45-minute web-based interviews with a demonstration of DHT devices. Survey questions related to the impact of weight loss (a key characteristic in Fearon’s cachexia definition) on physical activity, patients’ expectations regarding desired improvements and their level of meaningful activities, as well as preferences for DHT.Results: Seventy-eight percent of patients reported that their physical activity was impacted by cachexia, and for 77% of them, such impact was consistent over time. Patients perceived most impact of weight loss on walking distance, time and speed, and on level of activity during the day. Sleep, activity level, walking quality and distance were identified as the most meaningful activities to improve. Patients would like to see a moderate improvement of activity levels and consider it meaningful to perform physical activity of moderate intensity (eg, walk at normal pace) on a regular basis. The wrist was the preferred location for wearing a DHT device, followed by arm, ankle, and waist.Conclusion: Most patients reported physical activity limitations since the occurrence of weight loss compatible with cancer-associated cachexia. Walking distance, sleep and quality of walk were the most meaningful activities to moderately improve, and patients consider moderate physical activity as meaningful. To investigate the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on quality of life (QoL), meaningful daily activities, and (pre)frailty in community-dwelling octogenarians. Cross-sectional design with bivariate and multiple linear regression modeling using a stepwise approach examining the level of QoL during the COVID-19 lockdown in a group of 215 community-dwelling octogenarians (Mage = 86.49 ± 3.02). A comprehensive set of biopsychosocial variables (FRAIL scale, general health, engagement in meaningful activities survey, questions on loneliness, and feelings) were used as explaining variables. Particularly, a decrease in daily activities, social activities, and an increase in free times activities were observed, but the decrease in QoL could be explained by the meaningfulness in activities, together with experiencing emptiness in life, taking ≥ 4 medications a day and feeling down or depressed. We tried to understand which components contribute to and might affect a person's QoL caused by restrictions imposed by the governance and its influence on the lives of the community-dwelling octogenarians. As such, this output could be a baseline for the development of minimally impacting countermeasures during future lockdowns. Aims and objectives: To describe high‐functioning older adults' experiences of participation in daily activities and perceived barriers and facilitators to participation one‐ and 3‐months post‐acute hospitalization. Background: Older adults discharged after acute illness hospitalization are at risk for functional decline and adverse health outcomes. Yet, little is known about the subjective experience of resuming participation in meaningful activities beyond the immediate post‐discharge period among high‐functioning older adults, a mostly overlooked sub‐sample. Design: Qualitative descriptive longitudinal study adhering to the COREQ guidelines. Methods: Forty two participants ages ≥65 years (mean age 75, SD ± 7.9) were recruited from internal medicine wards. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted at participants' homes one‐month post‐discharge, followed by a telephone interview 3‐months after. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Participants perceived the hospitalization as a disruption of healthy and meaningful routines. This first key theme had unique expressions over time and included two sub‐themes. At one month: (1) reduced life spaces and sedentary routines. At 3 months: (2) a matter of quality not quantity – giving up even one meaningful activity can make a difference. The second key theme was described as a combination of physical and psychological barriers to participation over time. These themes demonstrated the profound impact of the hospitalization on behavior (participation) and feelings (e.g., symptoms). The third key theme was described as a dyad of intrinsic and extrinsic facilitators to participation. Conclusions: Acute illness hospitalization may lead to subtle decreases in participation in meaningful health‐promoting activities, even among high‐functioning older adults. These changes may impact overall well‐being and possibly mark the beginning of functional decline. Relevance to clinical practice: This study highlights the need for a more comprehensive assessment of participation, relevant for high‐functioning older adults, to enable person‐centered care. Introduction: During the lockdown caused by COVID-19 in Spain, citizens had to stop performing activities in the usual way, which could have had an impact on mental health. 'I'he aim of this study was to determine the contribution of participating in meaningful activities on mental health in the Spanish population during the COVID-19 lockdown. Method: \ cross-sectional online survey was developed and administered, where mental health (General Health Questionnaire), resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale), participation in meaningful activities (Engagement in Meaningful Activities Survey) and socio-demographic data were assessed. A hierarchical-linear-regression was used to identify key correlations. Results: 'The participants (N = 311) reported low mental health (M -- 16.12/36) and a lower level of resilience (M = 25.48). The results of the regression revealed that 32.6% of the variance of the GI IQ was significantly explained by the living space, including an outdoor space, resilience and participation in meaningful activities. 'I'he loss of meaningful activities was significantly related to mental health, with a significant contribution when controlling for the other variables (β = -.12). Conclusion: Although experimental studies arc needed to determine causality, this study highlights the relationship between participation in meaningful activities and mental health during the lockdown. During the COVID-19 pandemic, mandatory containment measures led to lockdowns and severely diminished social interaction, with older adults being one vulnerable group. Socially assistive robots (SARs) could prove to be an effective intervention. To explore the experiences of older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with a SAR during the first lockdown in Belgium. Inductive thematic analysis was used. After a two-week interaction period with robot James®, semi-structured interviews were conducted. Four people were interviewed (median: 86 years; range: 70–90 years; 2 men, 2 women). Four themes were identified. The first theme described the robot as a companion, alleviating feelings of loneliness and social isolation. The second theme explored the robot in light of meaningful activity. The third theme detailed the technical aspects of the robot and the fourth theme described notable barriers and areas of improvement. The study demonstrated the potential of SARs during the first lockdown period in Belgium. The robot proved to be promising in terms of alleviating feelings of loneliness and social isolation. It was found to be both motivating and facilitating in terms of meaningful activity. The study provided valuable insights for the care of lonely and occupationally deprived older adults. Background: The aim of this study was to clarify the engagement status of meaningful activities (MA) and its association with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) among people with early-onset dementia (EOD)., Methods: This cross-sectional study included 367 facilities that provide long-term care insurance (LTCI) services in Sapporo, Japan. A questionnaire was sent to these facilities to determine whether they had ever cared for people with EOD who developed dementia before the age of 65 and used LTCI services. For facilities that had provided such care, the engagement status of MA for people with EOD was determined, along with the presence or absence of BPSD., Results: A total of 54 facilities had experience accepting people with EOD (14.7%), and the statuses of 69 people with EOD were determined following approval for providing information from these facilities. In total, 27 of the 69 people with EOD (39.1%) were engaged in MA. Multivariate-adjusted regression model revealed that the absence of apathy was significantly associated with the engagement status of MA after adjustment for age, sex, and dementia severity., Conclusion: MA was performed by less than 40% of people with EOD using Japanese LTCI services, and it was negatively associated only with apathy among BPSD., (© 2024 Japanese Psychogeriatric Society.)

Changes from the current curriculum in Indonesia to the Merdeka Belajar (independent learning) curriculum require teachers to make learning more meaningful and fun for students by connecting concepts to the real world. This study aimed to develop a learning model with constructivism and contextual teaching and learning (CTL) approach to improve students' English skills. The specific objectives of this study are to map the English learning model that has been implemented by teachers, identify the needs of students and teachers for the English learning model, develop a learning model with CTL and constructivism approaches, and test the feasibility of the model. The data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, questionnaires, and tests in 12 public and private SMP/MTs spread across the Jepara, Demak, and Kudus districts. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on qualitatively collected data, students and teachers need a learning model that can provide students with learning experiences that are more meaningful. The developed model was proven effective by the value of the effectiveness test where the t-test results show greater than the t-table. Therefore, it implies that the learning models based on CTL and constructivism can be an alternative to the current learning models that can be applied to learning English at school. Interactive multimedia systems are widely used to enhance participation in meaningful activities for older people living with dementia. This review aims to analyze and synthesize current evidence regarding personalization of these systems, by considering the type of content included, the selection process and the experience of people living with dementia when interacting with the content. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO registration number blinded for review), a systematic search was undertaken across 4 databases. Meta-aggregation pooled data for synthesis. A total of 520 articles were identified from searches in four databases, and 15 were included in this review. Two classes of content were identified: personal, often autobiographical; and curated, carefully chosen generic content appropriate for a wider group of people in the demographic. Variety of content can act as a trigger for autobiographical memories. Personalized music enhanced a desire to engage and prompted meaningful interactions among participants. Despite some differences in the selected studies, the findings enabled us outline key points to consider when personalizing interactive multimedia systems for people living with dementia. Function after acute hospitalization is mostly operationalized by Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADL), a limited concept that overshadows a wide range of instrumental, social, and recreational activities, otherwise referred to as participation. Participation is important for patients' health and quality of life after hospitalization. This study focuses on high-functioning older adults, examining functional recovery after hospitalization by comparing BADL assessment with assessment of participation at one and three months following discharge relative to pre-hospitalization. Quantitative data were collected from 72 participants divided into two age groups of hospitalized older adults (age 65–74, n = 38; age ≥75, n = 34), followed by home visits after 1 month and telephone interviews 3 months after discharge. Both groups experienced a significantly greater decline in participation, compared with BADL, which were mostly preserved. A comprehensive assessment of participation better captures functional changes in high-functioning older adults. Early identification of participation withdrawal is crucial for preventing disability. The objectives of the study were (a) to compare self‐reported Quality of Life (QoL) in a 24‐month follow‐up of people with dementia attending day care designed for people with dementia (day‐care group, DC) with people with dementia who did not attend day care (control group, CG) and (b) to explore factors associated with QoL. A quasi‐experimental design with a 24‐month follow‐up period was used. The DC group included 181 participants recruited from 53 day‐care services. The CG included 76 participants recruited from 19 municipalities with no available day care designed for people with dementia. The sample covered the four health regions of Norway and inclusion period lasted from December 2013 to July 2015. The Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease (QoL‐AD) scale was used as the outcome measure. The differences in QoL between groups and the associations between participant characteristics and QoL, such as depressive symptoms and functional dependency, were examined using a linear mixed model. In the multiple model, the overall trend in QoL did not differ significantly between the DC and CG. However, the DC group exhibited significantly higher self‐reported QoL than the CG at all time points (p < 0.001 at T0, p = 0.018 at T12, and p = 0.006 at T24). Participants with shallow or no awareness who attended day care had significantly higher scores on QoL‐AD than persons with full awareness (p = 0.017). More depressive symptoms (p < 0.001) and higher functional dependency (p < 0.001) were associated with lower self‐reported QoL. The study revealed higher scores of self‐reported QoL among people attending day care compared with those who did not attend, showing that day care might have positive impact on the lives of people with dementia. International research focuses on person-centered care, quality of life, and quality of care for people living in long-term care facilities, and that it can be challenging to improve the quality of life for residents with dementia. The aim of this study was to explore ways of developing appropriate person-centered activities for nursing home residents based on what would be meaningful for them. A qualitative explorative design was chosen. Twelve students each year over a three-year period participated in the study (altogether 36). Each student tailored joyful and meaningful activities for two nursing home residents and wrote eight reflection journals each (altogether 284). Additional data came from eight focus group interviews with the students. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The main theme was “Enlivening the residents by cultivating their spark of life”. Two main categories were identified: (1) “Journeying to meaningful and enlivening (enjoyable) activities”, and (2) “Expressions of enlivening”, It is possible to tailor meaningful and enlivening activities together with the individual person with dementia. Involvement and engagement are necessary to understand the verbal and nonverbal expressions and communicate with the individual resident.

Abstract Background The spread of COVID-19 has affected people’s daily lives, and the lockdown may have led to a disruption of daily activities and a decrease of people’s mental health. Aim To identify correlates of adults’ mental health during the COVID-19 lockdown in Belgium and to assess the role of meaningful activities in particular. Methods A cross-sectional web survey for assessing mental health (General Health Questionnaire), resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale), meaning in activities (Engagement in Meaningful Activities Survey), and demographics was conducted during the first Belgian lockdown between April 24 and May 4, 2020. The lockdown consisted of closing schools, non-essential shops, and recreational settings, employees worked from home or were technically unemployed, and it was forbidden to undertake social activities. Every adult who had access to the internet and lived in Belgium could participate in the survey; respondents were recruited online through social media and e-mails. Hierarchical linear regression was used to identify key correlates. Results Participants (N = 1781) reported low mental health (M = 14.85/36). In total, 42.4% of the variance in mental health could be explained by variables such as gender, having children, living space, marital status, health condition, and resilience (β = −.33). There is an increasing demand for housing that enables older people to live independently with a greater quality of life (QoL) even when impairments and care needs increase. This article reviews the QoL for this cohort and housing design considerations that facilitate it through a two-step process. First, a review of literature is undertaken to identify key aspects of QoL that are important for older people with care needs and relevant to architecture. Second, established design frameworks are critically reviewed to identify features and gaps in knowledge to address them. The research finds that while existing knowledge focuses heavily on improving the independence and control of older people, there is not sufficient established knowledge for improving other aspects of QoL. The gaps in design knowledge include: the micro-spatial requirements for greater control, accommodating personal guests, undertaking preferred activities, and accommodating important possessions, as well as opportunities for housing complex design to provide greater connections to communal facilities and the wider community. There is a need to clarify the effects of housing design on enhancing the wider range of aspects of QoL specifically for older people with care needs. • As part of the COVID-19 measures, many (group) activities in long-term care facilities were cancelled. • The downscaling of certain activities for residents had a negative impact on caregivers' exhaustion and ability to provide care and support. • An adequate balance of different types of meaningful activities, with varying supervision levels, is beneficial for residents and caregivers. In the Netherlands, a national visitor-ban was in place in LTCFs during the first outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020. Meaningful activities were cancelled or downscaled, while others were performed more often. It is known that a lack of activities has several negative effects on residents, while the impact on caregivers remains largely unexplored. Here we investigate the influence of the down- and upscaling of activities on caregivers' physical and emotional exhaustion and their perceived ability to provide care and support. Downscaling of activities for residents, in particular watching television and musical activities, had a negative impact on caregivers' emotional exhaustion. The downscaling of watching television increased caregivers 'physical exhaustion. Furthermore, the downscaling of both activities had a negative impact on caregivers' perceived ability to provide ADL care and emotional support. • Meaningful activities tend to decline during transitions of care. • Maintaining meaningful activities during transitions is experienced as important. • The facilitators and barriers can be used to develop transitional care strategies. • Maintaining meaningful activities during transitions is an under-researched area. This systematic review summarizes the experiences with maintaining meaningful activities for persons with dementia during transitions of care, including related barriers and facilitators, and interventions and strategies. A systematic search was performed in eight databases. The methodological quality was assessed with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Four articles were included; one describing the transition from home to hospital and vice versa, and three describing the transition from home to nursing home. The narrative synthesis revealed a decrease of meaningful activities after transition. Facilitators of and barriers to maintaining meaningful activities during transitions were related to the person with dementia, informal caregivers, healthcare professionals and organization of care, as well as the environment. Interventions and strategies focused on continuously adjusting meaningful activities to the person. To conclude, maintaining meaningful activities during transitions is an under-researched area. We tested the feasibility, implementation strategy and mechanism of impact of FindMyApps. FindMyApps is a tablet intervention consisting of a selection tool to help people with dementia find usable apps for self-management and meaningful activities, including training to support informal carers in employing errorless learning principles to help people with dementia learn tablet and tool usage. We conducted an exploratory, pilot randomized controlled trial with a mixed-methods design. Twenty persons with mild dementia and carer dyads were randomly assigned to the FindMyApps group (n = 10), receiving either the FindMyApps training and selection tool, or a control condition (n = 10), receiving only a short tablet training. Pre- and post-test measurements at a three month follow-up, consisted of questionnaires and post-test semi-structured interviews. The FindMyApps tool was mostly perceived as useful and easy to use. Persons with dementia were generally able to learn how to use the tool, though they regularly needed support from informal carers. Persons with dementia found apps through the tool, which they used regularly. Persons with dementia and informal carers were positive about the training and support they received. No significant differences were found on outcome measures of persons with dementia, but based on effect sizes FindMyApps is a promising intervention. Qualitative results indicate that the FindMyApps intervention has the potential to positively influence the self-management abilities and engagement in meaningful activities of people with dementia. Remarks are made to improve the intervention and recommendations are given for future effectiveness studies. After discharge, stroke survivors and their informal caregivers need support from their social networks to resume their most valued activities. Rehabilitation professionals could help them establish a strong support system. Explore how older stroke survivors and their primary informal caregivers expect to resume their valued activities after discharge, and discover their ideas about involving, informing and educating their family members, friends and important others during inpatient rehabilitation so that, once home, they will have adequate support. We conducted semi-structured interviews with stroke survivors from three geriatric rehabilitation centres and their primary informal caregivers, used the pictures of daily activities to elicit their perspectives, and applied a descriptive and interpretive design to data analysis. Many participants had no concrete idea about how to resume their activities after discharge but nevertheless were optimistic they would. They expected help to be available and saw no need for professionals to involve their network during inpatient rehabilitation. However, once they had insight into the challenges to expect after discharge, they often appreciated the idea of professionals contacting their network. To better understand the challenges after discharge, it was helpful if professionals provided concrete, honest information about the stroke's consequences for daily life. Actually doing daily activities also helped gain better insights. To enhance insight in the need of social support after discharge, we suggest that rehabilitation professionals are honest about what to expect and let stroke survivors explore their valued activities in a realistic context more often. Background: This case study aimed to identify and describe meaningful physical occupations used by a cancer survivor to increase or maintain levels of participation during active chemotherapy and subsequent cancer related fatigue. Method: A case study approach was used to develop an in-depth description and analysis based on one participant’s experience with breast cancer and associated treatments. A semi-structured interview was conducted. The data were analyzed through description of the case, categories, and themes. It also included categorical aggregation in efforts to seek a collection of instances from the data to explore any issue-relevant meanings. Results: Following data analysis, one overarching theme, return to normalcy, was identified with three subthemes: (a) prioritization of meaningful activities, (b) modifications to activities or routines, (c) lack of referral for immediate needs. Conclusion: Personal knowledge of occupational therapy practice provided support for enhancing engagement in daily meaningful occupations. Lessons learned from this experience could be applied to clients experiencing cancer related side effects to improve engagement in daily occupations.

The aim of the present study is to explore the experience and potential health benefits for people with dementia attending farm-based day care services in Norway and their next of kin.Methods and design: The present study is a prospective study organized into several qualitative and quantitative sub-studies. Study period will last from 2016–2020. We use a multi-method approach and both an empirical and a constructivist view on knowledge to explore this multi-facetted phenomenon.Discussion: Several challenges are expected, for instance, the ability to include participants with dementia and keep them within the study for the whole study period. The functioning level of participants regarding language and understanding could challenge their ability to answer. Despite having several limitations, we believe that this study with its different approaches and methods will add important knowledge to the field. Objectives: This cross-sectional study aimed to clarify the relationship between apathy, meaningful activities, and satisfaction with such activities of older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).Methods: We analyzed 235 older adults with MCI (≥65 years, mean age: 76.9 ± 6.4 years, women: 63.4%) who participated in a community-based health check survey (Tarumizu Study 2018). MCI was defined as at least 1.5 SD below the reference threshold (age- and education-adjusted score) on one or more of the computerized cognitive test including memory, attention, executive functions, and processing speed. Apathy symptoms were assessed using three of the 15 items of Geriatric Depression Scale. Participants selected meaningful activities from the 95 activities of the Aid for Decision-Making in Occupation Choice and evaluated their satisfaction and performance.Results: Apathy in MCI was prevalent by 23.8%. The categories of meaningful activities revealed no difference, with, or without apathy. Logistic regression analysis showed that activity satisfaction was significantly associated with apathy after adjusting for age, sex, education, instrumental activities of daily living, depressive symptoms, and MCI subtype (OR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44-0.88, p = 0.008).Conclusions: Satisfaction with the activities that are deemed meaningful is associated with apathy among community-dwelling older adults with MCI. Aims: This secondary study characterized components of and engagement in the life‐enhancing alcohol‐management program (LEAP), which is resident‐driven housing first programming. Methods: We used a process akin to conventional content analysis to operationalize the LEAP according to its component activities. We used generalized linear modeling to identify predictors of LEAP activity participation and to predict alcohol and quality‐of‐life outcomes from participation in specific LEAP activities categories. Results: Overall, 86% of participants attended at least one LEAP activity, which comprised three categories: administrative leadership opportunities, meaningful activities, and pathways to recovery. Employment status alone predicted LEAP activity attendance: Employed residents attended 88% fewer LEAP activities than unemployed residents. Participants who sought out more pathways to recovery activities were more likely daily drinkers and more impacted by alcohol‐related harm. Those engaging in administrative leadership opportunities were overall less impacted by alcohol use and had a higher quality of life generally, and their alcohol outcomes further improved over time. Conclusions: Programming developed with Housing First residents was well‐attended but could be made more inclusive by including evening programming to accommodate residents employed full time and engaging more severely impacted participants in administrative leadership activities, where the greatest benefits of programming were seen. International research focuses on person-centered care, quality of life, and quality of care for people living in long-term care facilities, and that it can be challenging to improve the quality of life for residents with dementia. The aim of this study was to explore ways of developing appropriate person-centered activities for nursing home residents based on what would be meaningful for them. A qualitative explorative design was chosen. Twelve students each year over a three-year period participated in the study (altogether 36). Each student tailored joyful and meaningful activities for two nursing home residents and wrote eight reflection journals each (altogether 284). Additional data came from eight focus group interviews with the students. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The main theme was "Enlivening the residents by cultivating their spark of life". Two main categories were identified: (1) "Journeying to meaningful and enlivening (enjoyable) activities", and (2) "Expressions of enlivening", It is possible to tailor meaningful and enlivening activities together with the individual person with dementia. Background: The spread of COVID-19 has affected people's daily lives, and the lockdown may have led to a disruption of daily activities and a decrease of people's mental health.Aim: To identify correlates of adults' mental health during the COVID-19 lockdown in Belgium and to assess the role of meaningful activities in particular.Methods: A cross-sectional web survey for assessing mental health (General Health Questionnaire), resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale), meaning in activities (Engagement in Meaningful Activities Survey), and demographics was conducted during the first Belgian lockdown between April 24 and May 4, 2020. The lockdown consisted of closing schools, non-essential shops, and recreational settings, employees worked from home or were technically unemployed, and it was forbidden to undertake social activities. Every adult who had access to the internet and lived in Belgium could participate in the survey; respondents were recruited online through social media and e-mails. Hierarchical linear regression was used to identify key correlates.Results: Participants (N = 1781) reported low mental health (M = 14.85/36). In total, 42.4% of the variance in mental health could be explained by variables such as gender, having children, living space, marital status, health condition, and resilience (β = -.33). Loss of meaningful activities was strongly related to mental health (β = -.36) and explained 9% incremental variance (R2 change = .092, p < .001) above control variables.Conclusions: The extent of performing meaningful activities during the COVID-19 lockdown in Belgium was positively related to adults' mental health. This systematic review sought to evaluate the effectiveness of non-facilitated meaningful activities for older people with dementia in long-term care facilities. Searches were conducted in PubMed; CINAHL; EMBASE; Web of science; PsycINFO; Cochrane; ProQuest; and ClinicalTrials.gov to identify articles published between January 2004 and October 2019. A total of six studies were included. Results implied that current randomised controlled trials or controlled trials about non-facilitated meaningful activities for people with living dementia in long-term care facilitates are limited, but those included in this review were of adequate methodological quality. Meaningful non-facilitated activities, such as music, stimulated family presence, animal-like social robot PARO/plush toy and lifelike dolls, may have beneficial effects on agitation, emotional well-being, feelings of pleasure, engagement, and sleep quality. However, there remains a lack of conclusive and robust evidence to support these psychological and physiological effects of non-facilitated meaningful activities for older people with dementia living in long-term care facilities by care staff. Supporting ageing in place, quality of life and activity engagement are public health priorities for people living with dementia, but little is known about the needs and experiences of community-dwelling people with rarer forms of dementia with lesser known symptoms. Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare form of dementia usually caused by Alzheimer's disease but which is characterised by diminished visual processing (rather than a dominant memory problem), which poses challenges for maintaining independence and accessing appropriate support. This study used a comparative qualitative design and focussed ethnographic methods to explore experiential differences in activity engagement for 10 people with the most common, memory-led presentation of Alzheimer's disease and 10 people with posterior cortical atrophy within their everyday home environments. While the data collection revealed much rich variation in individual and contextual factors, some tentative high-level differences in the experiences of everyday activities could be drawn out, seemingly attributable to the different diagnoses' differing dominant symptoms. These included people with posterior cortical atrophy being less likely to use environmental cues to initiate activities, and more likely to withhold from asking for support because of preserved insight into the impact of this on carers. This lack of initiation of activities could be misinterpreted as apathy. People with posterior cortical atrophy also were discouraged from engaging in activities by disorientation within the home, and difficulties localising, identifying and manipulating objects. People with the more common, memory-led presentation of Alzheimer's disease exhibited more memory-based difficulties with engaging with activities such as forgetting planned activities, where to locate the items required for an activity and the steps involved. Despite these distinct symptom-led challenges, all participants and their family members demonstrated resourcefulness and resilience in making creative adaptations to support continued engagement in everyday activities, supporting the widely reported management strategies of people with dementia of the Alzheimer's type more generally. These findings offer helpful insights into some the differing impacts dementia related visual and memory impairments can have on everyday activity engagement, which will be helpful for others navigating these challenges and the health and social care practitioners working with people affected by these conditions. Background: Virtual reality (VR) offers the prospect of a safe and effective adjunct therapeutic modality to promote mental health and reduce distress from symptoms in palliative care patients. Common physiological and psychological symptoms experienced at the end of life may impact the person's participation in day-to-day activities that bring them meaning. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of VR interventions on occupational participation and distress from symptoms., Objectives: To describe the stimulus, results, and learnings from a single-site pilot study of virtual reality therapy in a specialist palliative care setting., Methods: Participants engaged in a VR session lasting from 9 to 30 minutes related to coping with pain, inner peace and mindfulness, adventure, and bucket list., Methods Measures: The pilot prospective quantitative observational cohort study was conducted from November 2021 through March 2022 using a pre-post VR intervention research design. Quantitative data was collected using patient-rated assessments and a wireless pulse oximeter. Occupational performance, satisfaction, and distress symptoms were measured using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure and the Palliative Care Outcomes Collaboration Symptom Assessment Scale (PCOC SAS). The intervention and study design adhered to international guidelines., Results: Ten participants engaged in the VR interventions. Data showed significantly improved occupational performance and satisfaction scores ( p < .001), decreases in PCOC SAS distress from pain ( p = .01), fatigue ( p < .001), and heart rate ( p = .018). No adverse side effects were observed., Significance of Results: Outcomes included an analysis of virtual reality's effectiveness to alleviate symptom burden and increase occupational participation for palliative care patients. Of specific interest to the research team was the application of virtual reality in a community-based and inpatient palliative care context to supplement allied health services and its feasibility of integration into standard palliative care., Conclusion: VR therapy showed positive improvements in the participants' occupational performance, satisfaction, and distress from pain and fatigue.
