Abstract\nKEY MESSAGEThis study assessed the impact of posting video abstracts on journal articles and authors’ X engagement. European Journal of Sport Science articles were disseminated on X as animated video abstracts (AN), author-provided video abstracts (AU), or title-only (TO) posts. Metrics, including page views, Altmetric Attention Score (AAS), X engagements, impressions, link clicks, media engagements, and views, were compared at 7 and 30 days. Authors’ X presence and video abstract creation were also examined. Page views did not differ between groups after 7 or 30 days. After 7 days, AN received significantly more AAS, impressions, media views and media engagements than AU or TO. After 30 days, AN received significantly more AAS, impressions, engagements, media views and media engagements than AU or TO. TO received significantly more link clicks than AU or TO after 7 and 30 days. Fifty percent of authors have an X account and 11.2% indicated interest in creating a video abstract. Articles promoted using animated video abstracts received more attention, reach and impact on X than those promoted using author-provided video abstracts or title-only posts. Animated video abstracts can be used by authors to effectively promote their research findings and increase their visibility on social media.Animated video abstracts are a valuable dissemination strategy for medical journals and researchers to promote their research, increasing visibility on X.Limited X adoption (50%) and low interest in creating video abstracts (less than 25%) among EJSS authors highlight the need to promote X use and video abstract creation.Future research should validate these findings, assess video abstract posts’ impact on citations, and evaluate free versus paid access effects.Guidelines should be developed to assist researchers in translating research abstracts into video abstracts, facilitating the development of effective video abstracts.EJSS articles promoted on X with animated video abstracts had greater attention, reach, and impact, urging authors to embrace X and video abstracts. Background/Aim: Predatory medical publishers have developed – and still continue to develop – ‘tricks’ that are intended to fool potential authors with the objective to attract manuscripts. They do so because authors have to pay them article processing charges and these are commonly their exclusive business model. Authors become ever more reluctant to publish in predatory journals because such journals are not considered as scientifically reliable and the articles in such journals are commonly not or hardly read (and even more rarely cited). Particularly young scientists can nevertheless be relatively easily seduced by the promises of predatory journals, which tend to approach potential authors in an aggressive way. This study aimed to analyse how often aggressive advertising is synonym for predatory. Methods: The 322 medical journals and their 105 publishers that approached us from 1 January 2023 to 1 July 2024 period with the request to contribute a manuscript were analysed. The analysis dealt with several aspects that may give insight into the trustworthiness of these journals and their publishers, viz the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), the Editor-in-Chief, the publishing history, the publisher’s location and the journal title. Results: Only 85 (26.3 %) of the journals under study had an Editor-in-Chief and 47 (14.6 %) of the journals had no ISSN. The great majority of the journals started after 2010; the journal titles seem aimed at raising confusion with established journals and many publishers were not housed where they pretend to be. There is a large body of research on Ramadan intermittent fasting (RIF) and health in Muslim communities, that can offer insights to promote the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which encompasses good health and well-being. Based on recent bibliometric evidence, we hypothesized that RIF research is highly relevant to SDG 3, particularly Targets 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, and 3.5. Therefore, this bibliometric study quantified RIF literature supporting SDG 3 and associated targets over the past seven decades and explored themes and trends. All types of research articles were extracted from the Scopus database from inception to March 2022. Microsoft Excel, Biblioshiny, and VOSviewer were used to qualitatively and quantitatively examine RIF research trends supporting SDG 3 and associated targets. We identified 1729 relevant articles. The number of publications notably increased since 1986, with a dramatic increase in 2019–2020. RIF research predominantly supported Target 3.4 (reducing risk for non-communicable diseases), with research hotspots being diabetes, diabetes medications, pregnancy, physiology, metabolic diseases, and obesity and metabolism. This target was also the most commonly supported by dedicated authors and institutions publishing on RIF, whereas other SDG 3 targets were negligibly addressed in comparison. Our comprehensive bibliometric analysis of RIF literature showed growing support for SDG 3 through positive contributions to half of the SDG 3 targets, although Target 3.4 received the most attention. The journal Der Landarzt, founded in 1919, is the predecessor of today's Zeitschrift für Allgemeinmedizin. From 1933–1936, the Landarzt temporarily bore the title Zentralblatt für Landärzte. In addition to medical content, the journal traditionally addressed professional policy and practical everyday topics for rural physicians. Articles on "racial hygiene" appeared in the Landarzt as early as 1929, so that the National Socialist takeover in 1933 did not represent a particular turning point in this respect. From 1937, the journal was published by Hippokrates-Verlag in Stuttgart. As a result, the pre-existing trend towards naturopathy and homeopathy intensified, which was in line with the orientation of National Socialist health policy at the time. Hopes for sustained support for rural physicians by the National Socialists were only partially realised and were obsolete by the Second World War at the latest. Many scientific journals have made the transition from print and online to online-only publication. The printed version offers something tangible that carries the distinct brand of the journal and/or the society it represents. Publication data was extracted from 94 journals. However, 84 journals were included in analysis as print cessation data was not available for 10 journals. There was a slower rate of increase in the total number of citations and decrease in number of citable items with the transition of journals from print and online to online-only distribution. There was faster increase in JIF and Immediacy Index after journals transitioned to online-only publication. A positive impact on citation patterns, such as JIF and Immediacy Index, of online-only publication supports the benefits of transitioning medical journals from print and online to online-only publication. Purpose: The aim of this study is to explore the articles included in the Altmetric index of Iranian medical journals that are listed in the PubMed database within scientific social networks.Methodology: This applied research utilized a survey methodology and a scientometric approach based on altmetric indicators. The statistical population for this study comprised all medical articles from 2018 available in the PubMed medical database. Data collection was facilitated through the use of the bookmarklet tool, which is accessible for free on the Altmetrics Institute website.Findings: The results revealed that 23% of the articles mentioned at least once on social networks received an altmetric score. The average citation count for articles with an altmetric score was 2.91. The altmetric average for all articles was 0.6 compared to the average citation count of 1.6, indicating that articles received roughly a single citation for every altmetric score. Among social networks, Twitter was the most popular with 1036 articles (21%), followed closely by Mendeley with 935 articles (19%).Conclusion: The coverage of altmetrics for articles in Iranian medical journals listed in the PubMed database was found to be satisfactory. The study also highlighted a significant and positive correlation between the number of citations received and the altmetric score, suggesting that articles with higher citation counts were also more frequently discussed on social networks.Value: This article provides insights into the altmetrics of medical science articles indexed in a reputable medical database, with the measured indicators relevant for use in various scientific social networks.

The subspecialized, clinically complex nature of neurosurgery should not result in marginalization or under-representation of neurosurgical scientific output. This study aims to provide an overview of the trends of neurosurgical publications in high-impact medical journals during the past 3 decades. An electronic database search was performed to identify all articles affiliated with neurosurgery departments published in 10 highly regarded medical journals. The trend of the proportion of neurosurgical publications to total publications in these journals was examined over time. Subgroup analyses on the basis of location, setting, domain, grant source, and topic of the articles were performed. Overall, 2090 neurosurgical publications were identified in the selected journals, comprising 0.26% of those journals' publications. The proportion of neurosurgical publications to total publications in these journals increased over time, from 0.03% before 1991 to 0.35% after 2020. Most studies were single-center (82.7%), clinical (52.4%), and primary research (89%). The United States (40.1%), China (12.4%) and the United Kingdom (7.1%) had the greatest number of neurosurgical publications among those analyzed. The share of clinical neurosurgical articles increased over time compared with basic and translational articles (P = 0.01). Among neurosurgical subspecialties, neuro-oncology (60.1%), vascular (19.0%), and general (7.0%) had the greatest number of publications identified, with substantial increases in vascular publications over time. The mean number of citations per year received by neurosurgical articles has increased over time, from 1.65 (before 1991) to 4.12 (2010–2020). Objective: Underrepresentation of women on editorial boards of biomedical journals has occurred for decades. The JAMA Network Journals have substantial and broad impact on advances in the biomedical sciences. We sought to determine the current status of gender representation on editorial boards of the 12 JAMA Network Journals. Methods: The gender of each editorial board member of the 12 JAMA Network Journals was classified based on review of online sources. The percentage of women on each board (i.e., number of women relative to total members) was calculated and compared to gender equity and parity benchmarks. The gender equity benchmark for each journal was defined as the percentage of women physicians in the medical specialty reflecting the journal's content based on Association of American Medical Colleges data. The gender parity benchmark for all journals was defined as 50% women. Results: There was considerable variation in the representation of women on the editorial boards of the JAMA Network Journals relative to gender equity and parity benchmarks. Women were underrepresented on 50% (6 of 12) of boards relative to gender equity and 67% (8 of 12) of boards relative to gender parity. Conclusions: Women were found to be underrepresented on 50% or more of the editorial boards of the JAMA Network Journals. This finding reflects gender inequities in academic publishing and the broader biomedical enterprise, which limits advances in the biomedical sciences and health care. This editorial is a translation of the Slovenian original, which we published in the previous issue of the journal in December 2023. We have added some content that also appeals to international readership.

A scientific text based on research is distinguished from other texts in that it consistently references the relevant sources. In this article, we take a closer look at the Vancouver reference style, as it is the one most commonly used in medicine and the health sciences. Presented are the most common examples of citing basic bibliographic information for papers in peer-reviewed journals, proceedings papers, monographs and information sources on the internet. Included are also basic guidelines for labelling, reproducing and citing tables and figures, along with examples. Modern tools for reference and citation editing are also briefly introduced as well as their functionalities.

Background: As an important platform for researchers to present their academic findings, medical journals have a close relationship between their evaluation orientation and the value orientation of their published research results. However, the differences between the academic impact and level of disruptive innovation of medical journals have not been examined by any study yet. Objective: This study aims to compare the relationships and differences between the academic impact, disruptive innovation levels, and peer review results of medical journals and published research papers. We also analyzed the similarities and differences in the impact evaluations, disruptive innovations, and peer reviews for different types of medical research papers and the underlying reasons. Methods: The general and internal medicine Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) journals in 2018 were chosen as the study object to explore the differences in the academic impact and level of disruptive innovation of medical journals based on the OpenCitations Index of PubMed open PMID-to-PMID citations (POCI) and H1Connect databases, respectively, and we compared them with the results of peer review. Results: First, the correlation coefficients of the Journal Disruption Index (JDI) with the Journal Cumulative Citation for 5 years (JCC5), Journal Impact Factor (JIF), and Journal Citation Indicator (JCI) were 0.677, 0.585, and 0.621, respectively. The correlation coefficient of the absolute disruption index (Dz) with the Cumulative Citation for 5 years (CC5) was 0.635. However, the average difference in the disruptive innovation and academic influence rankings of journals reached 20 places (about 17.5%). The average difference in the disruptive innovation and influence rankings of research papers reached about 2700 places (about 17.7%). The differences reflect the essential difference between the two evaluation systems. Second, the top 7 journals selected based on JDI, JCC5, JIF, and JCI were the same, and all of them were H-journals. Although 8 (8/15, 53%), 96 (96/150, 64%), and 880 (880/1500, 58.67%) of the top 0.1%, top 1%, and top 10% papers selected based on Dz and CC5, respectively, were the same. Third, research papers with the "changes clinical practice" tag showed only moderate innovation (4.96) and impact (241.67) levels but had high levels of peer-reviewed recognition (6.00) and attention (2.83). Conclusions: The results of the study show that research evaluation based on innovative indicators is detached from the traditional impact evaluation system. The 3 evaluation systems (impact evaluation, disruptive innovation evaluation, and peer review) only have high consistency for authoritative journals and top papers. Neither a single impact indicator nor an innovative indicator can directly reflect the impact of medical research for clinical practice. How to establish an integrated, comprehensive, scientific, and reasonable journal evaluation system to improve the existing evaluation system of medical journals still needs further research. Introduction: The scientific study of racism as a root cause of health inequities has been hampered by the policies and practices of medical journals. Monitoring the discourse around racism and health inequities (i.e., racism narratives) in scientific publications is a critical aspect of understanding, confronting, and ultimately dismantling racism in medicine. A conceptual framework and multi-level construct is needed to evaluate the changes in the prevalence and composition of racism over time and across journals. Objective: To develop a framework for classifying racism narratives in scientific medical journals. Methods: We constructed an initial set of racism narratives based on an exploratory literature search. Using a computational grounded theory approach, we analyzed a targeted sample of 31 articles in four top medical journals which mentioned the word 'racism'. We compiled and evaluated 80 excerpts of text that illustrate racism narratives. Two coders grouped and ordered the excerpts, iteratively revising and refining racism narratives. Results: We developed a qualitative framework of racism narratives, ordered on an anti-racism spectrum from impeding anti-racism to strong anti-racism, consisting of 4 broad categories and 12 granular modalities for classifying racism narratives. The broad narratives were "dismissal," "person-level," "societal," and "actionable." Granular modalities further specified how race-related health differences were related to racism (e.g., natural, aberrant, or structurally modifiable). We curated a "reference set" of example sentences to empirically ground each label. Conclusion: We demonstrated racism narratives of dismissal, person-level, societal, and actionable explanations within influential medical articles. Our framework can help clinicians, researchers, and educators gain insight into which narratives have been used to describe the causes of racial and ethnic health inequities, and to evaluate medical literature more critically. This work is a first step towards monitoring racism narratives over time, which can more clearly expose the limits of how the medical community has come to understand the root causes of health inequities. Objectives: To assess the gender composition of upper-level specialty-specific editor positions among United States (U.S.) medical society-affiliated journals and to evaluate the equitable inclusion of women and women physicians. Materials and Methods: The gender composition of upper-level (e.g., editor-in-chief, deputy) specialty-specific editor positions among 39 U.S. medical society-affiliated journals as of January 5, 2023, was analyzed. Editor positions below the level of associate editor were excluded. Parity (50:50 representation) and equity (compared with the proportion of practicing physicians in each medical specialty) benchmarks were utilized to determine if women are underrepresented in editor positions. Results: A total of 862 editor positions among 39 journals were assessed. Women held 32.9% (284/862) of positions (95% confidence interval [CI]: 29.9%–36.2%), significantly less than expected based on the U.S. population (p < 0.001). Physicians comprised 90.8% (783/862) of positions, of whom 30.4% (238/783) were women physicians (95% CI: 27.3%–33.7%), significantly less than expected (p < 0.001). Thirty-three (84.6%, 95% CI: 70.3%–92.8%) journals were below parity for women overall, whereas 34 (87.2%, 95% CI: 73.3%–94.4%) were below parity for women physicians. Fourteen (35.9%, 95% CI: 22.7%–51.6%) journals were below equity for women physicians. Notably, 13 (33.3%, 95% CI: 20.6%–49.0%) journals were below both parity and equity for women overall and women physicians. Conclusions: This study reveals mixed results in the equitable inclusion of women in editor positions of journals affiliated with U.S. medical societies. Despite the equitable inclusion of women in editorial roles being a remediable issue, approximately one third of journals affiliated with major U.S. medical societies remain inequitable. Intellectual property laws should not be strict protection frameworks for free Access to Information. Instead, as digital space has made it easier to access Information and blur the geographical boundaries of knowledge, Access to Information is permitted for all by amending intellectual property laws nationally and internationally. This is a quantitative study to bridge the gap between the richness and poverty of Information and a means of disseminating knowledge. The Information needed to answer the questions of this research was collected using a researcher-made questionnaire (content analysis and Delphi panel) consisting of five main components (publisher, author, publications, subject, and commercialization) and 63 questions. Questionnaires were sent to the study's statistical population, which was all the open-access medical journals approved by the Ministry of Health. Based on the type of variables, data were described with mean and standard deviation indices for quantitative and frequency variables and frequency percentages for qualitative variables. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software version 24. The findings of this study are presented in several different tables to examine the intellectual property components and the databases indexing medical journals. Publications indexed on all three sites of Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed are components one and three due to deviations from the norm. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to examine the uniformity of the score distribution of the components mentioned in the indexes. Only the four components of normality are established. According to the findings, all components have a significant relationship with the index, language, publisher, and time of publications of the Ministry of Health. This questionnaire can be used to provide an intellectual property model for open-access medical journals. And using the presented model to review and evaluate open-access journals in the field of medicine.

Topics include the rationale behind the schedule change to support the editorial team and ensure continued excellence; the historical background of the journal's evolution from its inception in 1891; and the commitment to delivering influential and high-quality scientific content to Mississippi physicians.

The outcomes of eight acupuncture clinical trials on knee osteoarthritis were published in well-regarded English-language mainstream medical journals between 1975 and 2022. Reported trial results were equally balanced between positive and negative outcomes, thus producing an overall impression of ambiguity in regard to the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. This paper reviews these trials, analyzes the factors taken into account in each trial, and has posited two reasons for the continuing lack of consensus in regard to the medical effectiveness of acupuncture: the difficulty of designing scientifically consistent clinical-trial studies; and an institutional bias toward ambiguity on the part of scientific and medical journals.
