In dentistry, the shade selection of the restoration affects the success of the restoration. For this reason, it may be decisive for clinicians to determine whether the difference in framework production influences color in metal-ceramic restorations. The study examined the effects of different framework production techniques used in porcelain-fused-to-titanium restorations on color changes. 45 square-shaped samples were manufactured using cast, milling, and laser-sintering techniques. Opaque and dentin porcelain were performed, and all samples were glazed. A spectrophotometer was used for color measurements. Before opaque application, after opaque application, and after porcelain + glaze application, it was obtained L*, a*, and b* values. Color differences (ΔE00) were calculated with the CIEDE2000 formula. ANOVA (Post Hoc: Bonferroni) and Shapiro Wilks (Normality) tests were used for statistical analysis (p < 0.05). At the different laboratory steps, the difference between cast&laser-sintered groups and between milled&laser-sintered groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Before and after opaque application, the differences in L*, a*, and b* values between cast, milled, and laser-sintered groups were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Different framework production methods influenced the color of porcelain-fused-to-titanium restorations.

In the Horn of Africa, little is known about temporal changes in hydroclimate owing to the influence of multiple weather systems, the complex terrain, and the sparse instrumental records. Absolutely dated tree-ring records offer the potential to extend our understanding of climate into the pre-instrumental era, but tree-ring studies in this region, and indeed all of tropical Africa, have been rare largely due to lack of an annual climate cycle that reliably produces annual tree-rings. Abstract Objectives Restoration fit is one of the prerequisites of clinical durability. It is controversial as to whether computer‐assisted design/computer‐aided milling (CAD/CAM) or lost‐wax fabrication methods result in more fit metal‐ceramic crowns. This in‐vitro study was conducted to examine the internal fit of porcelain fused to metal crowns fabricated using CAD/CAM and lost‐wax techniques during fabrication stages (framework, porcelain, cementation) through digital triple scanning, replica weighting, and observation with electron microscopy. Material and methods Twenty uniform resin dies of prepared first maxillary molars were randomly divided into two groups according to the fabrication technique: lost wax and CAD/CAM. The internal fit was measured in all steps of completing the crowns (framework, porcelain, and cementation) using different methods, including triple scanning, replica weighting, and scanning electron microscopy. The data were statistically analyzed using t test, Pearson, and repeated measures analysis of variance (α = .05). Results Triple scanning revealed no difference in the internal fit of CAD/CAM and lost‐wax groups in all the fabrication steps (p > .05). The replica weighting method showed no difference between groups in the framework step (p > .05), while the internal fit was significantly better in the CAD/CAM group after porcelain application (p .05). The Pearson correlation test showed no significant correlation between electron microscopy, replica weighing, and triple scanning methods (p > .05). Conclusion According to scanning electron microscopy as the superior evaluation method, the internal fit of cobalt–chrome PFM crown of both CAD/CAM and lost wax groups was within the acceptable clinical range and there was no significant difference between them. Triple scanning revealed no difference in the internal fit of framework and porcelain steps but a better fit after cementation. According to replica weighting, the internal fit in the porcelain step was higher than the framework.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fit of additively manufactured cobalt-chromium and titanium and CNC-milled titanium frameworks before and after ceramic veneering. Materials and Methods: Ten stone casts simulating an edentulous maxilla provided with six abutment analogs were produced. For each stone cast, one additively manufactured cobalt-chromium framework (AM CoCr) and one titanium framework (AM Ti) were fabricated. The fit was analyzed with a coordinate measuring machine in three dimensions (x, y, and z axes) using best-fit virtual matching of center point coordinates, before and after ceramic veneering. CNC-milled titanium frameworks (CNC Ti) and earlier results from CNC-milled cobalt-chromium frameworks (CNC CoCr) were used for comparison. Results: All frameworks presented minor misfit before and after veneering in the horizontal plane (x- and y-axes) between 2.9 and 13.5 μm and in the vertical plane (z-axis) between 1.6 and 5.4 μm. Ceramic veneering affected the fit of all groups of frameworks. Both AM Ti and AM CoCr presented significantly smaller distortion in the vertical plane compared with the CNC-milled frameworks. Conclusion: Implant-supported frameworks can be produced in either Ti or CoCr using either CNC milling or additive manufacturing with a fit well within the range of 20 μm in the horizontal plane and 10 μm in the vertical plane. Aim: To assess hard as well as soft peri-implant tissues within cases having two lost adjacent anterior teeth treated through placing either two implants with two separate crowns or only an implant along with a crown with a cantilever, and evaluating the effect of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) restoration on cantilever design up to 18 months after functional loading., Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven participants (15 males and 12 females; mean age, 38.6 years; range 20-50 years) with missing two adjacent anterior teeth were treated with implant system (Flotecno implant system, Italy). In the first group (implant-implant metal ceramic group), we treated nine participants utilizing two adjacent implants with two separate single metal ceramic crowns. In the second group (implant-cantilever metal ceramic group), we treated nine participants by placing single implant with cantilever metal ceramic fixed dental prosthesis (FDP). In the third group (implant-cantilever PEEK group), we treated nine cases utilizing single implant with a cantilever PEEK FDP framework. Clinical and radiographic examinations were recorded. Marginal bone level, implant stability, and prosthetic complications were assessed during an 18-month follow-up period., Results: Marginal bone loss (MBL) exhibited similar measurements among all groups. The clinical outcomes did not address significant variance among all groups as regards implant stability within the period of follow-up. We also observed minor prosthetic complications. Participants were very satisfied within all groups., Conclusion: Based on the limitations of our research, utilizing cantilever extensions has no influence on MBL as well as implant stability., Clinical Significance: Mean marginal bone level exhibited a significant rise from baseline to 18 months for all groups, however, still within the clinically accepted range. Regarding implant stability, no significant variance was observed among all groups for 18 months. The cantilever FDP design facilitated prosthesis fabrication among those having laterals of narrow diameters. Aim: To evaluate the influence of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) coping fabrication methods and ceramic application on the marginal and internal fit of metal-ceramic crowns. Methods: Co-Cr copings for metal-ceramic crowns were prepared by lost wax casting or CAD-CAM machining of sintered blocks. The fit was analyzed using the silicone replica technique at four assessment points: marginal gap (MG), axial wall (AW), axio-occlusal (AO) angle, and central occlusal (CO) wall. After the initial analysis, the copings were ceramic-veneered with the layering technique, and the fit was again determined. Data were statistically analyzed by paired and unpaired Student's-t test (a=0.05). Results: Marginal and internal fit before ceramic application according to the coping manufacturing method showed significant differences only at CO (p < 0.001), with milled copings (137.98±16.71 µm) showing higher gap values than cast copings (112.86±8.57 µm). For cast copings, there were significant differences at MG (before 109.13±8.79 µm; after 102.78±7.18 µm) and CO (before 112.86±8.57 µm; after 104.07±10.63 µm) when comparing the fit before and after ceramic firing. For milled copings, there was significant difference only at AO (before 116.39±9.64 µm; after 108.54±9.26 µm). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the coping fabrication method influenced the internal fit. Ceramic firing maintained or improved the fit of the metal-ceramic crowns. Abstract Background Orthopedic metal implants are notoriously associated with release of metallic ions able to cause biological adverse reactions which might lead to implant loosening and failure. To limit any possible adverse reactions, ceramic coatings for orthopedic metal implants have been introduced. However, information regarding the interaction of these coatings with microbes responsible for periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) is lacking. Hence, the aim of the present in vitro study is to assess the microbial affinity to a titanium-niobium nitride (TiNbN) coating. Methods Adhesion and biofilm formation of clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Cutibacterium acnes were assessed on TiNbN-coated titanium discs in comparison with uncoated titanium and cobalt-chrome alloys discs, with either smooth or rough surfaces. Bacterial adhesion was performed by counting adhered bacteria in the first hours of incubation, and the biofilm formation was performed by means of a spectrophotometric assay and by confocal laser scan microscopy after 72 hours of incubation. Results Overall, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, among the most common bacteria responsible for PJIs, displayed a significantly decreased attachment in the first hours of contact and, when cultured in presence of TiNbN coating, in comparison with CoCrMo. Biofilm formation of the four tested strains was comparable on all alloys. Conclusions Although the onset of a PJI is more complex than in an in vitro scenario, these findings suggest that TiNbN-coated orthopedic implants do not increase PJIs risk while ameliorating tribological and surface properties could represent a valid choice to limit possible complications such as metal hypersensitivity.

Purpose Even though the use of full ceramic crowns have become a well-established practice in dental clinics compare to the last decade, the use of imported casted porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFMs) crowns is still prevalent. The use of imported PFMs is often economically driven; however, when dentists order PFMs, they do not have capabilities to examine its true alloy content. Therefore, we raise the questions whether cheaper imported PFMs have more discrepancies in alloy content compared to domestically produced PFMs? Materials and Methods This study included 62 porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns: 41 produced in Norway and 21 imported. Their alloy-composition was determined non-destructively by EDX and SEM. Results and Conclusions Imported PFMs demonstrated larger deviations compared with non-imported PFMs. Significant deviation was found in key metallic elements in the different alloys (W, In, Pd, Ag). The detected deviations in key element such as Wolfram and Indium could influence the PFMs service time. These finding may be of international concern

Aim: Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) restorations are essential in fixed prosthodontics for their strength and esthetics, but are prone to fractures due to material disparities and stress factors. This study evaluates the shear bond strength (SBS) of two porcelain repair systems for cohesive and adhesive fractures in conventional PFM and direct metal laser-sintered (DMLS) restorations, addressing clinical repair needs., Materials and Methods: Thirty metal-ceramic discs were fabricated and divided into two main groups based on the fabrication method: Conventional casting and DMLS. Each group had three subgroups: Conventional casting (A: Control, B: Cohesive defect, C: Adhesive defect) and DMLS (D: Control, E: Cohesive defect, F: Adhesive defect), each with 5 specimens. Shear bond strength was measured using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) at 0.5 mm/min. Data were analyzed with a one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05), and Tukey's post hoc test was used for significant differences. Student's t -tests compared SBS between control groups., Results: A one-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in SBS among Conventional Casting subgroups ( p < 0.001). Subgroup A (36.282 ± 1.692 MPa) had higher SBS than B (13.202 ± 1.336 MPa) and C (17.033 ± 1.634 MPa), with Tukey's test confirming significant differences ( p < 0.001). For DMLS subgroups, subgroup D (37.768 ± 0.560 MPa) had higher SBS than E (22.381 ± 1.137 MPa) and F (13.245 ± 0.693 MPa), with Tukey's test showing significant differences ( p < 0.001). No significant difference was found between subgroups A and D ( p = 0.10). A new fabrication process where a titanium coping, with a gold colored titanium nitride outer layer, can be reliably fused to porcelain; however, the marginal adaptation characteristics are undetermined.The purpose of the study was to compare the clinically acceptable marginal adaptation (CAMA - defined as a marginal gap mean of ≤ 60 μm) rates of cathode-arc vapor-deposited titanium and cast base metal copings to determine whether the titanium copings would produce a higher CAMA rate than the cast base metal copings.Thirty-seven cathode-arc vapor-deposited titanium copings and 40 cast base metal copings were evaluated using an optical microscope. Fifty vertical marginal gap measurements were made of each coping, and the mean of these measurements was used to form the gap score. A 1-tailed t test was used to compare the CAMA rates, and the Satterthwaite t-score was used to analyze the consistency of the coping adaptation (α =.05).CAMA was achieved by 24 of the 37 (64.86%) titanium copings compared to 19 of the 40 (47.50%) base metal copings. A 1-tailed t test produced a Z-score of 1.533 (1-tailed P=.063), which allowed acceptance of the study hypothesis with only a modest risk of a Type I error.Cathode-arc vapor-deposited titanium copings exhibited a higher rate of CAMA compared to base metal copings.

Fractures in esthetic ceramic veneering are one of the potential failure modes during prosthetic treatment. Depending on the type of chipping fracture, there are three possible outcomes: replacement, restoration repair, or polishing of the fractured area. Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies provide new methods to the maintenance and repair of fixed metal-ceramic restorations. Here, we report the case of a 68-year-old patient who came to the dentist with comcerns about his appearance due to spontaneous gingival bleeding and a fracture in the ceramic veneering of a metal-ceramic restoration. The patient reported occurrences of bruxism. The proposed treatment plan included consultation with a cardiologist, periodontal treatment, polishing of the chipped areas, repair of the fractured zone with an exposed metal core, and fabrication of a mouth guard. Once the ceramic veneering on the palatal and buccal sides of the retainers had been completely removed, a digital impression was obtained and sent to the dental lab so that milled zirconium veneer could be manufactured. The veneering was cemented the next day using the standard prosthetic field preparation process and resin-modified glass ionomer cement. Objectives: The primary aim was to investigate survival rate of zirconia versus metal abutments, and the secondary aim was clinical outcomes of all-ceramic versus metal-ceramic crowns on single-tooth implants., Methods: Patients with tooth-agenesis participated to previously published prospective clinical study with 3-year follow-up were recalled after 5 years. Biological variables included survival and success rate of implants, marginal bone level, modified Plaque and Sulcus Bleeding Index and biological complications. Technical variables included restoration survival rate, marginal adaptation and technical complications. The aesthetic outcome of crowns and peri-implant mucosa in addition to patient-reported outcome were recorded. Descriptive analysis, linear mixed model for quantitative data, or generalized linear mixed model for ordinal categorical data were applied; significance was set to 0.05., Results: Fifty-three patients (mean age: 32.4 years), with 89 implants participated to the 5-years examination. The implants supported 50 zirconia abutments with 50 all-ceramic (AC) crown and 39 metal abutments with 29 metal-ceramic (MC) and 10 AC crowns. The Implant and restoration survival rate was 100% and 96%, respectively. No clinically relevant biological difference between implants supporting metal or zirconia abutments was registered. The technical complications were veneering fracture of AC-crowns (n = 3), crown loosening of MC-crowns (n = 4) and one abutment screw loosening (MC-crown on metal abutment). MC-crowns had significantly better marginal adaptation than AC-crowns (p = .01). AC-crowns had significantly better color and morphology than MC-crowns (p = .01)., Conclusions: Zirconia-based single-tooth restorations are reliable alternative materials to metal-based restorations with favorable biological and aesthetic outcome, and few technical complications., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Background: Marginal fit significantly impacts the long-term success of dental restorations. Different pattern fabrication methods, including hand-waxing, milling, or 3D printing, may affect restorations accuracy. The effect of porcelain firing cycles on the marginal fit of metal-ceramic restorations remains controversial, with conflicting findings across studies., Purpose: The aim was to evaluate the potential effects of multiple porcelain firings (3, 5, 7 cycles) as well as pattern fabrication method (conventional hand-waxing, milling, and 3D printing) on the marginal adaptation of 3-unit implant-supported metal-ceramic fixed partial dentures. It was hypothesized that neither the wax pattern fabrication method nor repeated ceramic firings would significantly affect the marginal adaptation of metal-ceramic crowns., Methods: In this in-vitro study, 30 Cobalt-Chromium alloy frameworks were fabricated based on pattern made through three techniques: conventional hand-waxing, CAD-CAM milling, and CAD-CAM 3D printing (n = 10 per group). Sixteen locations were marked on each abutment to measure the vertical marginal gap at four stages: before porcelain veneering and after 3, 5, and 7 firing cycles. The vertical marginal gap was measured using direct microscopic technique at ×80 magnification. Mean vertical marginal gap values were calculated and two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests were used for inter-group comparisons (α = 0.05)., Results: The 3D printing group showed significantly lower (P<0.001) mean vertical marginal gaps (60-76 μm) compared to the milling (77-115 μm) and conventional hand-waxing (102-110 μm) groups. The milling group exhibited a significant vertical gap increase after 3 firing cycles (P<0.001); while the conventional (P = 0.429) and 3D printing groups (P = 0.501) showed no significant changes after 7 firing cycles. Notably, the vertical marginal gap in all groups remained below the clinically acceptable threshold of 120 μm., Conclusion: CAD-CAM 3D printing provided superior marginal fit compared to CAD-CAM milling and conventional hand-wax pattern fabrication methods. The impact of porcelain firing on the mean marginal gap was significant only in the milling group. All three fabrication techniques yielded clinically acceptable vertical marginal adaptation after repeated firings. Purpose: Juniper ( Juniperus procera ) is a common forest tree species in Saudi Arabia. The decline in many populations of J . procera in Saudi Arabia is mainly due to seed dormancy and loss of natural regeneration. This study assessed the effects of chemical and hormonal treatments on seed germination and seedling growth in juniper plants., Methods: The seeds were subjected to either chemical scarification with 90% sulfuric acid and 20% acetic acid for 6 min or hormonal treatment by seed soaking in two concentrations (50 and 100 ppm) of three growth regulators, namely, indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellins (GA 3 ), and kinetin, for 72 h. A control group without any seed treatment was also prepared. The experiments were performed in an incubator maintained at room temperature and under a light and dark period of 12 h for 6 w. The germinated seeds for each treatment were counted and removed from the dishes. The selected germinated seeds from different treatments were planted in a greenhouse and irrigated with tap water for another 6 weeks. The hormone-treated seedlings were sprayed with their corresponding hormone concentrations 1 w after planting., Results: The highest percentage of seed germination was significantly recorded after seed soaking in 50 ppm GA 3 , whereas treatment with IAA (100 ppm) resulted in the best seedling growth. Seedlings treated with the three phytohormones showed a significant increase in photosynthetic pigments, total soluble sugars, proteins, percentage of oil, IAA, GA 3 , and kinetin contents of juniper seedlings compared with the control value, whereas abscisic acid content was decreased compared with chemical treatments., Conclusion: The investigated different treatments had an effective role in breaking seed dormancy and improving seedling growth of J . procera , which is facing a notable decline in its population worldwide. A phytochemical investigation of Bidens procera L.C.Xu ex X.W.Zheng afforded two novel polyacetylenes, tridecane-2 E -monoene-4,6,8-triyntylen-1,13-diol-12- O - β -glucoside ( 1 ) and tetradecane-2 E ,8 E -diene-4,6-diyne-1,14-diol-13- O - β -glucoside ( 2 ), together with ten known compounds ( 3 - 12 ). Their chemical structures were elucidated by NMR and MS spectrums as well as the comparison of the published data. Furthermore, the chemotaxonomy of the yielded compounds was also discussed.

Background: Orthopedic metal implants are notoriously associated with release of metallic ions able to cause biological adverse reactions which might lead to implant loosening and failure. To limit any possible adverse reactions, ceramic coatings for orthopedic metal implants have been introduced. However, information regarding the interaction of these coatings with microbes responsible for periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) is lacking. Hence, the aim of the present in vitro study is to assess the microbial affinity to a titanium-niobium nitride (TiNbN) coating. Methods: Adhesion and biofilm formation of clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Cutibacterium acnes were assessed on TiNbN-coated titanium discs in comparison with uncoated titanium and cobalt-chrome alloys discs, with either smooth or rough surfaces. Bacterial adhesion was performed by counting adhered bacteria in the first hours of incubation, and the biofilm formation was performed by means of a spectrophotometric assay and by confocal laser scan microscopy after 72 hours of incubation. Results: Overall, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, among the most common bacteria responsible for PJIs, displayed a significantly decreased attachment in the first hours of contact and, when cultured in presence of TiNbN coating, in comparison with CoCrMo. Biofilm formation of the four tested strains was comparable on all alloys. Conclusions: Although the onset of a PJI is more complex than in an in vitro scenario, these findings suggest that TiNbN-coated orthopedic implants do not increase PJIs risk while ameliorating tribological and surface properties could represent a valid choice to limit possible complications such as metal hypersensitivity. Purpose: Even though the use of full ceramic crowns have become a well-established practice in dental clinics compare to the last decade, the use of imported casted porcelain-fused-tometal (PFMs) crowns is still prevalent. The use of imported PFMs is often economically driven; however, when dentists order PFMs, they do not have capabilities to examine its true alloy content. Therefore, we raise the questions whether cheaper imported PFMs have more discrepancies in alloy content compared to domestically produced PFMs? Materials and Methods: This study included 62 porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns: 41 produced in Norway and 21 imported. Their alloy-composition was determined non-destructively by EDX and SEM. Results and Conclusions: Imported PFMs demonstrated larger deviations compared with nonimported PFMs. Significant deviation was found in key metallic elements in the different alloys (W, In, Pd, Ag). Statement of Problem: Recent clinical results for Zirconia all-ceramic restorations have revealed that the fracture rate 6-15% of the Zirconia framework is so low and the core of Zirconia has high stability. However, chipping-off fractures of porcelain are the most common reason for failures of Zirconia in the fixed partial dentures. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of porcelain in the porcelain fused to metal and all-ceramic crowns with Zirconia core. Materials and Methods: Two groups were selected: porcelain fused to metal (PFM) and porcelain fused to Zirconia (PFZ) (n = 30).In the PFM group, a wax model (10 × 10 × 10mm)was used to cast metal base (Ni_Cr alloy). In the PFZ group, an acrylic cubic model (10 × 10 × 10mm) was made as Zirconia model for scanning.15 cubic Zirconia samples were milled by CAD-CAM. The procedure of porcelain veneering was conducted by the conventional layering technique up to 2 mm thickness (2.5 × 2.5 × 2 mm). All specimens were stored in water for 48 hrs. Thermal cycling was conducted for 20000 cycles between 55°C and 5ºC alternatively for 30s.All samples were mounted in acrylic resin and the SBS test was performed, using a universal testing machine. The analysis of data was performed at a significance level of 0.05 using Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Mann-Whitney U-test. Results: Mean of SBS in PFM and PFZ was 24.57 and 20.88, respectively. The results of Mann-Whitney test showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups of porcelain fused to metal and Zirconia in item shear bond strength (p = 0.455). Conclusions: There was no significant difference between the two groups of PFM and PFZ in the item SBS.

Background and Aim: Fractured metal-ceramic restorations may be repaired with composite in some cases to postpone the fabrication of a new restoration. Knowledge about the bond strength can help predict the success rate of this treatment modality. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of two types of mechanical surface treatment of metal along with the use of different adhesive systems on bond strength of composite to a non-precious metal alloy. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro experimental study, 110 metal discs were fabricated of nickel chromium alloy and were randomly divided into two groups of surface preparation with sandblasting (S) and bur (B). In each group, the samples were divided into five subgroups based on the adhesive system and composite resin used: Group NC: Z350 composite without application of adhesive; group AC: Alloy primer/Clearfil AP-X; group ZA: Z-Prime Plus/Aelite; group MT: Monobond Plus/Tetric N Ceram; group AZ: Adper Single Bond Plus/Z250. Current treatment options available for prostate cancer (PCa) patients have many adverse side effects and hence, new alternative therapies need to be explored. Anticancer potential of various phytochemicals derived from Calotropis procera has been studied in many cancers but no study has investigated the effect of leaf extract of C. procera on PCa cells. Hence, we investigated the effect of C. procera leaf extract (CPE) on cellular properties of androgen-independent PC-3 and androgen-sensitive 22Rv1 cells. A hydroalcoholic extract of C. procera was prepared and MTT assay was performed to study the effect of CPE on viability of PCa cells. The effect of CPE on cell division ability, migration capability and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was studied using colony formation assay, wound-healing assay and 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate assay, respectively. Caspase activity assay and LDH assay were performed to study the involvement of apoptosis and necrosis in CPE-mediated cell death. Protein levels of cell cycle, antioxidant, autophagy and apoptosis markers were measured by western blot. The composition of CPE was identified using untargeted LC-MS analysis. Results showed that CPE decreased the viability of both the PCa cells, PC-3 and 22Rv1, in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Also, CPE significantly inhibited the colony-forming ability, migration and endogenous ROS production in both the cell lines. Furthermore, CPE significantly decreased NF-κB protein levels and increased the protein levels of the cell cycle inhibitor p27. A significant increase in expression of autophagy markers was observed in CPE-treated PC-3 cells while autophagy markers were downregulated in 22Rv1 cells after CPE exposure. Hence, it can be concluded that CPE inhibits PCa cell viability possibly by regulating the autophagy pathway and/or altering the ROS levels. Background: Ethnoveterinary studies are important to maintain the sustainability of livestock health and support people's livelihoods through the provision of food, maintaining livestock health, and other biological resources. This study was carried out in Soro District, southern Ethiopia, to identify, document and analyse plant species with ethnoveterinary uses along with the associated indigenous and local knowledge., Materials and Methods: Informants were selected using purposive (key informants) and systematic random sampling (general informants) methods. Data on ethnoveterinary plants and their uses were collected through semi-structured interviews, guided field walks, 13 focus group discussions with five to seven members in each and participant observation. Informant consensus factor and fidelity level were computed to identify the most common livestock ailment categories and the best plant species with ethnoveterinary use, respectively. Preference ranking methods were used to identify the potentially effective ethnoveterinary medicinal plants for the most frequently reported livestock ailments. The use diversity of multipurpose plants with ethnoveterinary importance was analysed using the analytical methods of ethnobotany including priority ranking, comparisons and important indices. The T-test statistic was used to compare knowledge differences among different social groups., Results: A total of 132 plant species in 120 genera and 61 families were reported by informants as having ethnoveterinary uses. The plants are said to be used by the local communities in various ways to treat 50 livestock health problems. Higher number of informants (23.77%) cited Momordica foetida for the treatment of 16 livestock ailments. The highest informant consensus value for this species is associated with its use for treating blackleg in cattle; Nicotiana tabacum was cited for the treatment of 15 livestock ailments mainly recommended for the Lumpy Skin Disease/Ailment of bovines; Croton macrostachyus for treatment of 13 livestock ailments including wooden tongue, FMD in bovines; and Gymnanthemum amygdalinum for nine ailments mainly diarrhoea of all livestock types. Achyranthes aspera is claimed to provide the most effective treatment for Aspiration pneumonia (severe coughing in bovines, sheep and goats) alone, while Croton macrostachyus, Ximenia americana, Allium sativum and Juniperus procera were indicated as potential plant species to treat Lumpy Skin Disease in bovines in the order given. The fidelity level analysis showed that Datura stramonium, Dodonaea viscosa subsp. angustifolia and Asparagus africanus were potential medicinal plant species to treat the respective ailments of rabies, Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and evil eye/spirit. Multipurpose plant species including Prunus africanus, Combretum molle and Afrocarpus falcatus have been highly threatened as indicated by direct matrix ranking mainly due to collection of fuel wood, construction materials and making household utensils, and farm implements rather than for other uses., Conclusion: Soro District has rich and diversified livestock herbal medicinal resources, and indigenous knowledge of remedy preparations and applications is transmitted through generation lines. This resource faces anthropogenic threats with deforestation being the leading factor. Consequently, ethnoveterinary medicinal plants continue to decline before adequate and proper scientific documentation and testing are made. There is a dire need for planning and implementation of appropriate in situ and ex situ conservation strategies and to strive towards ensuring the survival and sustainable utilization of such important plant resources of Soro District. This must be supported by further documentation of the associated indigenous knowledge and pharmacological testing of the key promising species including Balanites aegyptiaca (novel species/NS to treat specific ailment), Brugmansia suaveolens (novel species/NS reported first to treat Livestock ailments/LsAs), Euclea divinorum (NS to treat specific ailments), Grevillea robusta (NS), Hagenia abyssinica (NS for the reported specific ailment), Pentanema confertiflorum (NS), Juniperus procera (NS), Maesa lanceolata (NS), Millettia ferruginea (NS for reported specific ailments), Schrebera alata/NS, Securidaca longepedunculata, Spiniluma oxyacantha/NS, Vepris nobilis (novel species reported first to treat LsAs), Zanthoxylum asiaticum /NS and Ximenia americana (NS for specific ailments). The current study investigated wild plant resources and health risk assessment along with northern Pakistan's mafic and ultramafic regions. Ethnobotanical data was collected through field visits and semi-structured questionnaire surveys conducted from local inhabitants and healers. Six potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) were extracted with acids and analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS, Perkin Elmer-7000) in nine selected wild medicinal plants. Contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI) were used to determine the health risk assessment of the studied medicinal plants. The results showed that the selected medicinal plants were used for the treatments of cough, joint swelling, cardiovascular disorders, toothaches, diabetes, and skin pimples by the local inhabitants due to their low-cost and easy accessibility. The concentrations of Pb (3.4-53 mg kg -1 ), Cd (0.03-0.39 mg kg -1 ), Ni (17.5-82 mg kg -1 ), Cr (29-315 mg kg -1 ), Mn (20-142 mg kg -1 ), and Zn (7.4-64 mg kg -1 ) in the studied medicinal plants were found above the safe limits (except Zn) set by WHO/FAO/USEPA (1984/2010). The Pb contamination factor was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in A. modesta (7.84) and D. viscosa (6.81), and Cd contamination factor was significantly higher in C. officinalis (26.67), followed by A. modesta (8.0) mg kg -1 . Based on PTE concentrations, the studied plants are considered not suitable for human consumption purposes. Pollution load index values for A. modesta, A. barbadensis, A. caudatus, A. indica, C. procera (2.93), D. viscosa (2.79), and C. officinalis (2.83), R. hastatus (3.12), and Z. armatum were observed as 1.00, 2.80, 2.29, 2.29, 2.93, 2.79, 2.83, 3.12 and 2.19, respectively. Hazard index values were in order of R. hastatus (1.32 × 10 -1 ) ˃ C. procera (1.21 × 10 -1 ) ˃ D. viscosa (1.10 × 10 -1 ) ˃ A. caudatus (9.11 × 10 -2 ) ˃ A. barbadensis (8.66 × 10 -2 ) ˃ Z. armatum (7.99 × 10 -2 ) ˃ A. indica (6.87 × 10 -2 ) ˃ A. modesta (5.6 × 10 -2 ) ˃ C. officinalis (5.42 × 10 -2 ). The health risk index values suggested that consumption of these plants individually or in combination would cause severe health problems in the consumers. Pearson's correlation results showed a significant correlation (p ≤ 0.001) between Zn and Mn in the studied medicinal plants. The current study suggests that wild medicinal plants should be adequately addressed for PTEs and other carcinogenic pollutants before their uses in the study area. &lt;b&gt;Background and Objective:&lt;/b&gt; &lt;i&gt;Chrysomya albiceps&lt;/i&gt; is widely spread worldwide, causing myiasis in both humans and animals and playing a mechanical role in the spreading of helminths, viruses and bacteria. Searching for new and safe alternative control methods is very important to eliminate the transmission of pathogens. This study aims to determine the oviposition-deterrent activity of &lt;i&gt;Juniperus procera&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Artemisia absinthium&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Rosmarinus officinalis&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Hypoestes forskaolii&lt;/i&gt; wild plants against adult &lt;i&gt;Chrysomya albiceps&lt;/i&gt;. &lt;b&gt;Materials and Methods:&lt;/b&gt; The effect of plant extracts from &lt;i&gt;Juniperus procera&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Artemisia absinthium&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Rosmarinus officinalis&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Hypoestes forskaolii&lt;/i&gt; plants were tested against adult females of &lt;i&gt;Chrysomya albiceps&lt;/i&gt; for oviposition deterrent or repellency. These extracts resulted in oviposition deterrent efficacy for adult females of &lt;i&gt;C. albiceps&lt;/i&gt; based on the plant type, plant part (leaves or stems), extract type (methanol, acetone and petroleum ether) and tested dose. &lt;b&gt;Results:&lt;/b&gt; The highest anti-oviposition activity against &lt;i&gt;C. albiceps&lt;/i&gt; females presented from &lt;i&gt;A. absinthium&lt;/i&gt; stems acetone extract at a dose of 1 mg cm&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; by 100 %, while at 0.5 mg cm&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; recorded remarkable repellency by 86.7% as compared with the control treatment. According to the dose-response relationship, &lt;i&gt;A. absinthium&lt;/i&gt; methanol and acetone extracts were ED&lt;sub&gt;50&lt;/sub&gt; values of 0.85, 0.319 mg cm&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; (leaves) and 1.88, 0.576 mg cm&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; (stems), followed by &lt;i&gt;J. procera&lt;/i&gt; methanol extract by 0.983 mg cm&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; (leaves) and 0.98 mg cm&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; (stems), respectively achieved highest oviposition deterrent efficiency as compared with other extracts. &lt;b&gt;Conclusion:&lt;/b&gt; The high repellency activities of these extracts can be utilized to stop &lt;i&gt;C. albiceps&lt;/i&gt; flies from laying eggs on wounds and transmitting myiasis diseases to humans and animals and could potentially replace pesticides used in the future control programs of flies.

BACKGROUND: Dental porcelain alloys hold different levels of cytotoxicity, which can lead to cell apoptosis. However, the in vitro researches on dental ceramic alloy causing apoptosis are mainly conducted, in which the oral environment cannot be simulated well. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of dental ceramic alloys on apoptotic protein expression in the oral buccal mucosa of golden hamsters. METHODS: Thirty-six 60-70-day-old male golden hamsters provided by Beijing Vital River Laboratory Animal Technology Co., Ltd. were randomly divided into six groups. Five kinds of dental ceramic alloys (nickel-chromium, cobalt chromium, CPTi, palladium based and gold-platinum alloys) and polypropylene (negative control) were fixed on the oral mucosa of golden hamsters in corresponding groups. The mucosae contacting with the specimens were removed at 14 and 28 days, respectively. The protein expression levels of Caspase-3, Caspase-8, and Caspase-9 in the buccal mucosa were detected by western blot assay. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) At 14 and 28 days of fixation, there was no significant difference in the Caspase-3 protein level between gold-platinum alloy group and negative control groups (P > 0.05), and the level of Caspase-3 protein in the remaining four groups was significantly higher than that in the negative control group (P < 0.05). (2) At 14 days, the Caspase-8 protein level in each group was significantly higher than that in the negative control group (P < 0.05). After 28 days of fixation, the protein level of Caspase-8 in the nickel-chromium and palladium group was higher than that in the negative control group (P < 0.05), while the protein level of Caspase-8 in the other groups was not significantly different from that in the negative control group (P > 0.05). (3) At 14 days, the Caspase-9 protein level in each group was higher than that in the negative control group (P < 0.05). At 28 days, there was no significant difference in the Caspase-9 protein level between cobalt-chromium and negative control groups (P > 0.05), while the Caspase-9 protein level in the remaining groups was higher than that in the negative control group (P < 0.05). BACKGROUND: Our previous findings indicate that the chemical composition and mechanical properties of gold-platinum (Au-Pt) ceramic alloy have no changes after repeated casting. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influences of repeated casting on the corrosion resistance of Au-Pt ceramic alloy. METHODS: The Au-Pt ceramic alloy (primary alloy) was taken to carry out the first casting, and the generation I alloy (the scrap alloy such as the base and the casting channel) was obtained under the molten casting environment which was vacuum-added argon gas. The first-generation alloy was treated before recasting, in order to obtain the generation II alloy (base, cast iron and other scrap alloys), and then to obtain the generation III alloy (base, cast steel and other scrap alloys). The alloys at I-III generations were immersed in the electrolyte (pH=2.35) for 7 days. The type and concentration of metal ions in the leaching liquor were determined to calculate the corrosion rate of the immersed alloys using the weight loss method. The surface topography of the immersed alloys was observed, and in addition, the surface roughness and surface free energy of each specimen were tested. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) After the immersion of Au-Pt ceramic alloys at different generations, only three kinds of elements including indium, tin, iron were detected. The amount of indium deposited was the highest among the three kinds of elements, but there was no difference in the amount of metal ions deposited at each generation and the total amount of metal ions deposited at I-III generations among the various alloys (P > 0.05). (3) There was no difference in the corrosion rate between the generation III alloys (P > 0.05). (3) Under the scanning electron microscope, the surface of the alloys at I-III generations showed uniform scratches before immersion, and obvious corrosion marks were observed after immersion. (4) After immersion, the surface roughness of the alloys at I-III generations was increased, and the surface roughness of the generation II and III alloys showed no difference from that of the generation I alloys (P > 0.05). (5) After immersion, the surface free energy of the alloys at I-III generations was increased, but there was no difference between different generations of the alloys (P > 0.05). Fungal diseases have always been a major problem for cantaloupe crops; however, synthetic fungicides are hazardous to humans and the environment. Consequently, a feasible alternative to fungicides without side effects could be by using bio agents and naturally occurring plants with antibacterial potential. This study has achieved a novel procedure for managing wilt and root rot diseases by potentially using Trichoderma sp. culture filtrates in consortium with plant extract of Calotropis procera , Rhizoctonia solani , Fusarium oxysporum , and Pythium ultimum , which were isolated from infected cantaloupe roots with identified root rot symptoms. The antagonistic activity of four Trichoderma isolates and analysis of antibiotics and filtrate enzymes of the most active Trichoderma isolate were determined as well as phytochemical analysis of C. procera plant extract using HPLC-UV. The obtained results showed that all Trichoderma isolates considerably lowered the radial growth of P. ultimum , R. solani , and F. oxysporum in varying degrees. The scanning electron micrographs illustrate the mycoparasitic nature of Trichoderma sp. on F. oxysporum . The phytochemical analysis of C. procera indicated that phenolic contents were the major compounds found in extracts, such as vanillin (46.79%), chlorogenic acid (30.24%), gallic acid (8.06%), and daidzein (3.45%) but including only a low amount of the flavonoid compounds rutin, naringenin, and hesperetin. The Pot experiment's findings showed that cantaloupe was best protected against wilting and root rot diseases when it was treated with both Trichoderma sp. culture filtrates (10%) and C. procera extract of (15 mg/mL), both alone and in combination. This study demonstrates that the application of bio agent Trichoderma spp. filtrate with C. procera phenol extract appears useful for controlling wilting and root rot disease in cantaloupe. This innovative approach could be used as an alternative to chemical fungicide for the control of wilting and rot root diseases.

The durability of dental restorations is highly determined by an accurate marginal fit, which is in turn affected by the high temperature of porcelain firing. Information is inadequate about the marginal adaptation of metal-ceramic restorations fabricated by soft metal milling technologies after repeated firings. This study aimed to compare the effect of repeated ceramic firings on the marginal fit of copings fabricated from cobalt-chromium through soft metal milling and a conventional nickel-chromium casting alloy. A single standard brass die was designed, machined, and scanned, based on which, 20 frameworks were designed and fabricated through either soft metal milling or conventional casting (n = 10 per group) and porcelain veneered. The vertical marginal fit of the metal copings was measured after 3, 5, and 7 firing cycles by using a digital microscope on 16 points around the finish line of the metal die at ×80 magnification. The data were analyzed through repeated measures ANOVA and independent t-test (α = 0.05). The marginal fit of neither metal group was significantly affected by the number of firing cycles (P = 0.747). However, the marginal discrepancy was statistically lower in the soft metal milling group than that in the casting group (P<0.001). Repeated porcelain firings did not significantly affect the marginal fit of either alloy and remained within the clinically acceptable range after firings. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the tensile strength, elongation, microhardness, microstructure and fracture pattern of various metal ceramic alloys cast under different casting conditions. Two Ni-Cr alloys, Co-Cr and Pd-Ag were used. The casting conditions were as follows: electromagnetic induction under argon atmosphere, vacuum, using blowtorch without atmosphere control. For each condition, 16 specimens, each measuring 25 mm long and 2.5 mm in diameter, were obtained. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) tests were performed using a Kratos machine. Vickers Microhardness (VM), fracture mode and microstructure were analyzed by SEM. UTS, EL and VM data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA. For UTS, alloy composition had a direct influence on casting condition of alloys (Wiron 99 and Remanium CD), with higher values shown when cast with Flame/Air (p < 0.05). The factors 'alloy" and 'casting condition" influenced the EL and VM results, generally presenting opposite results, i.e., alloy with high elongation value had lower hardness (Wiron 99), and casting condition with the lowest EL values had the highest VM values (blowtorch). Both factors had significant influence on the properties evaluated, and prosthetic laboratories should select the appropriate casting method for each alloy composition to obtain the desired property.

Background/Aim. One of the results of many years of Cerec® 3D CAD/CAM system technological development is implementation of one intraoral and two extraoral optical scanning methods which, depending on the current indications, are applied in making fixed restorations. The aim of this study was to determine the degree of precision of optical scanning methods by the use of the Cerec®3D CAD/CAM system in the process of making ceramic inlays. Methods. The study was conducted in three experimental groups of inlays prepared using the procedure of three methods of scanning Cerec ®3D system. Ceramic inlays made by conventional methodology were the control group. The accuracy of optical scanning methods of the Cerec®3D system computer aided designcomputer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) was indirectly examined by measuring a marginal gap size between inlays and demarcation preparation by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results. The results of the study showed a difference in the accuracy of the existing methods of scanning dental CAD/CAM systems. The highest level of accuracy was achieved by the extraoral optical superficial scanning technique. The value of marginal gap size inlays made with the technique of extraoral optical superficial scanning was 32.97 ± 13.17 μ. Techniques of intraoral optical superficial and extraoral point laser scanning showed a lower level of accuracy (40.29 ± 21.46 μ for inlays of intraoral optical superficial scanning and 99.67 ± 37.25 μ for inlays of extraoral point laser scanning). Conclusion. Optical scanning methods in dental CAM/CAM technologies are precise methods of digitizing the spatial models; application of extraoral optical scanning methods provides the hightest precision.

Introduction: the finite element method was used to analyze the stresses in teeth restored with posts. The variables studied were material and modulus of elasticity of dowel. Methods: the model of the post-restored tooth involved dentin, ligament, cortical and trabecular bone, gingiva, metal-ceramic crown, and gutta-percha. The dowels were made of zirconium, base metal and noble metal casting alloys. The dowel was cemented with resin luting agents. The variable included was modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. A load of 200 N was applied to the crown an angle of 45 degrees in order to calculate the stress distribution and tensile shear also von misses stresses. Results: showed von Misses stress in dentin: Noble metal alloys 105.1899 N/mm2, base metal alloys 69.86746 N/(mm2) and zirconia 69.06321 N/mm2. Von Misses stress in dowel: Noble metal alloys 210.3797 N/mm2, base metal alloys 349.3373 N/mm2 and zirconia 345.3161 N/mm2. Conclusions: within the limitations of the study, it was found that increasing the elastic modulus of the post l was found to cause decreased dentin stress.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of a self-adhering lowable composite on four substrates used in indirect technique, for a week and one year of storage in distilled water . Forty eight samples (5 mm wide / 15 mm length / 2 mm thick) were prepared at dental prosthetic laboratory: 12 samples of the ceromer Adoro/AD, leucite ceramic IPS Empress Esthetic/EE, zirconia ceramic ZirCAD/ZI (Ivoclar Vivadent) and the metal ceramic alloy Fit Cast SB/ME (Talladium do Brasil). Samples of each substrate were divided into two groups for each time (a week and one year). Two lowable composites (Control/FF-Filtek Z350 XT Flow/3M ESPE, and the self-adhering/DF-Dyad Flow/Kerr) were bonded to four substrates. Four Tygon tubing were positioned over each sample, which were illed in with the composites FF and DF, and visible light-cured for 20s. The tubings were removed to expose the specimens (12 per group) in format of cylinders, and the samples were stored in distilled water at 37 ± 2°C for one week and one year . After these periods, each sample was attached to testing machine and the specimens were submitted to the shear bond strength test at speed of 1.0mm/min, until failure. The results were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test (p<0.05). To one week tests, the substrates leucite and metal showed the highest SBS means, to both composites. For the one- year experiments, the substrates did not show differences in the SBS averages for both composites, except for zirconia that showed null result.
