During the period preceding the vegetation growing season (GS), temperature emerges as the pivotal factor determining phenology in northern terrestrial ecosystems. Despite extensive research on the impact of daily mean temperature (Tmean) during the preseason period, the influence of diurnal temperature range (DTR) on vegetation photosynthetic phenology (i.e., the impact of the plant photosynthetic cycle on seasonal time scale) has largely been neglected. Using a long-term vegetation photosynthetic phenology dataset and historical climate data, we examine vegetation photosynthetic phenology dynamics and responses to climate change across the mid–high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere from 2001 to 2020. Our data reveal an advancing trend in the start of the GS (SOS) by −0.15 days per year (days yr−1), affecting 72.1% of the studied area. This is particularly pronounced in western Canada, Alaska, eastern Asia, and latitudes north of 60°N. Conversely, the end of the GS (EOS) displays a delaying trend of 0.17 days yr−1, impacting 62.4% of the studied area, especially northern North America and northern Eurasia. The collective influence of an earlier SOS and a delayed EOS has resulted in the notably prolonged length of the GS (LOS) by 0.32 days yr−1 in the last two decades, affecting 70.9% of the studied area, with Eurasia and western North America being particularly noteworthy. Partial correlation coefficients of the SOS with preseason Tmean, DTR, and accumulated precipitation exhibited negative values in 98.4%, 93.0%, and 39.2% of the study area, respectively. However, there were distinct regional variations in the influence of climate factors on the EOS. The partial correlation coefficients of the EOS with preseason Tmean, DTR, and precipitation were positive in 58.6%, 50.1%, and 36.3% of the region, respectively. Our findings unveil the intricate mechanisms influencing vegetation photosynthetic phenology, holding crucial significance in understanding the dynamics of carbon sequestration within terrestrial ecosystems amidst climate change. The measurement of global precipitation is important for quantifying and understanding the Earth's systems. While gauges form the basis of conventional measurements, global measurements are only truly possible using satellite observations. Over the last 50–60 years, satellite systems have evolved to provide a comprehensive suite of observing systems, including many sensors that are capable of precipitation retrievals. While much progress has been made in developing and implementing precipitation retrieval schemes, many techniques have concentrated upon retrievals over regions with well-defined precipitation systems, such as the tropics. At higher latitudes, such retrieval schemes are less successful in providing accurate and consistent precipitation estimates, especially due to the large diversity of precipitation regimes. Furthermore, the increasing dominance of snowfall at higher latitudes imposes a number of challenges that require further, urgent work. This paper reviews the state of the current observations and retrieval schemes, highlighting the key factors that need to be addressed to improve the estimation and measurement of precipitation at mid-to-high latitudes. This study investigated the contributions of mid–high-latitude circulation anomalies to the extremely hot summer (July and August; JA) of 2018 over Northeast Asia (NEA). The JA-mean surface air temperature in 2018 was 1.2°C higher than that of the 1979–2018 climatology, with the amplitude of such an anomaly almost doubling the interannual standard deviation, making 2018 the hottest year during the analysis period 1979–2018. The abnormal warming over NEA was caused by a local positive geopotential height anomaly reaching strongest intensity in JA 2018. Further investigation suggested that the upper-tropospheric circulation anomalies over northern Europe and the Caspian Sea were crucial to forming this NEA circulation anomaly through initiating downstream wave trains. Particularly, the geopotential heights over these two regions were concurrently at their highest in JA 2018, and therefore jointly contributed to the profound circulation anomaly over NEA and the hottest summer on record. Due to these two teleconnection patterns, the temperature anomalies in NEA are closely related to those in both northern Europe and the Caspian Sea, where the similarly extreme warming also happened in 2018.

The northern polar region possesses the most extensive cold airmass on Northern Hemisphere. The generation of this polar cold airmass and its outflow to lower latitudes play an important role in the climate system in terms of mass and heat exchanges. However, long-term changes in the polar cold airmass, especially in summer, and the climatic effects on mid-high latitudes are still unclear. Using an isentropic approach, we quantitatively show that the polar cold airmass amount has decreased rapidly since the 1980s, with a decade lagging behind the global warming. The equatorward flux of the cold airmass has also weakened, trapping the cold airmass in its source region. These profound changes in the cold airmass coincide with a period characterized by rapid surface warming and increasingly frequent heat waves in recent three decades over the mid-high latitude continents. Owing to regional differences in the cold airmass reduction, Europe and North America have experienced a surface warming faster than the Northern Hemisphere mean. Furthermore, such a long-term trend in the polar cold airmass can be attributed to Arctic sea ice loss and internal decadal variability of sea surface temperature in high-latitude oceans. Our results highlight that the isentropic analysis of cold airmass may serve a good detection of the climate change at polar region and mid-high latitudes.

Impacts of the MJO on winter rainfall and circulation in China are investigated using a real-time multivariate MJO index. Composite results using the daily rainfall anomalies and 'rainy day' anomalies according to eight different MJO phases show that the MJO has considerable influence on winter rainfall in China. Rainfall anomalies show systematic and substantial changes (enhanced/suppressed) in the Yangtze River Basin and South China with the eastward propagation of the MJO convective center from the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific. When the MJO is in phase 2 and 3 (MJO convective center is located over the Indian Ocean), rainfall probability is significantly enhanced. While in phase 6 and 7 (MJO convective center is over the western Pacific), rainfall probability is significantly reduced. MJO in winter influences the rainfall in China mainly through modulating the circulation in the subtropics and mid-high latitudes. For the subtropics, MJO influences the northward moisture transport coming from the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea by modulating the southern trough of the Bay of Bengal and the western Pacific subtropical high. For the mid-high latitudes, the propagation of the low frequency perturbations associated with the eastward-propagating MJO convection modulate the circulation in the mid-high latitudes, e.g. the East Asian winter monsoon and the low trough over central Asia.
