Introduction: The genus Agassizia in Mexico is represented both in the fossil record by the species Agassizia regia? during the Miocene of Chiapas and by the extant species Agassizia excentrica on the Atlantic coast and Agassizia scrobiculata on the Pacific coast. Qualitative diagnosis and descriptions make it hard to distinguish morphological boundaries between species, especially in groups with fossils and recent representatives, increasing the level of complexity by having samples of disparate qualities and quantities. Objective: We propose the use of little explored statistical methods in the comparison of paleontological and biological populations. This methodology allowed us to resolve issues of missing values in a morphometric data set for the genus Agassizia. Methods: Using samples recently collected and specimens already housed in collections, we explore a routine of recovery of missing data MICE and the numerical and graphic analyses PERMANOVA, PCA, and SIMPER to compare morphometric parameters between these species for recognizing diagnostic characters. Results: Our results show a morphological difference in the length of the ambulacrum II and the length and width of the periproct and peristome structures, these being greater in A. scrobiculata, with a consistent pattern in both population samples not previously described. Conclusions: Quantitative morphometric comparisons can be an assertive and complementary tool to determine distinctive differentiation characteristics in species of the same genus. Comparative morphology reviews should be an ongoing exercise to keep taxonomic knowledge on both extinct and extant species up to date. Our research encourage the scientific community studying fossil populations to utilize quantitative and multivariate methods to strengthen their investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Este trabajo presenta los resultados del estudio paleontológico de la sección de Peña Adrián (Miranda de Ebro, Burgos), formada por facies aluviales y palustre-lacustres del Mioceno Superior. Se han muestreado dos niveles margosos, PAF15 y PAF24 (A y B) donde se han identificado diferentes géneros y especies de gasterópodos, carofitas, y ostrácodos. A partir del estudio estratigráfico y paleontológico ha sido posible conocer las condiciones ambientales del sistema lacustre y su variación a lo largo de la sucesión, mostrando fases de mayor y menor energía hasta la colmatación y retracción final del sistema.

El yacimiento de Los Ibones supone una nueva aportación al conocimiento del registro icnológico de vertebrados del Mioceno de la Cuenca del Ebro. El yacimiento se encuentra en la superficie de un nivel de calizas en el tránsito entre las formaciones Uncastillo y Alcubierre. Se corresponde con depósitos en un área encharcada de escasa profundidad sometida a exposición subaérea y localizada en zonas aluviales distales. El yacimiento se incluye en la UTS N1 T5 y se propone una edad Mioceno inferior como lo más probable. Se han identificado ocho icnitas de grandes dimensiones y bajo grado de preservación morfológica, no reconociéndose en su mayoría sus elementos anatómicos salvo con una excepción que muestra la presencia de dedos en posición anterior. Considerando su tamaño y forma, un mamífero de gran tamaño, posiblemente un perisodáctilo o un artiodáctilo, sería el productor más probable.

En esta contribución se reporta por primera vez restos fósiles de mamíferos y trazas continentales hallados en la Formación Sarmiento (Eoceno medio a Mioceno Temprano), aflorante en la localidad de Cabo Raso (Chubut, Argentina). Entre los mamíferos se destaca la presencia del roedor Soriamys gaimanensis (primer registro fuera de la localidad de Bryn Gwyn), además de los chinchilloideos Eoviscaccia australis y Perimys sp. En el mismo nivel se hallaron dientes aislados de notoungulados (Hegetotheriidae indet. y Pachyrukhinae cf. Pachyrukhos sp.). Por otra parte, se reporta el icnotaxón Chubutolithes gaimanenesis (hallado en el nivel subyacente al portador de mamíferos), siendo ésta la tercera localidad de la provincia del Chubut en la que se lo registra. Estos materiales permitieron proponer edades relativas para ambos niveles de la Formación Sarmiento en dicha localidad, uno de ellos referible a las Edades Mamífero Continentales de América del Sur (SALMA su sigla en inglés) Casamayorense (Eoceno medio) y el otro a la SALMA Colhuehuapense (Mioceno Temprano). Desde un punto de vista faunístico, el hallazgo de la nueva asociación Colhuehuapense para Argentina resulta relevante dada la restricción geográfica de los yacimientos de esta edad comparado con otras SALMAs (e.g., Deseadense o PanSantacrucense). Desde un punto de vista geográfico, Cabo Raso es la única localidad actualmente costera de Chubut con fósiles del Mioceno Temprano descriptos hasta ahora.

The Miocene strata of the Qom Formation from the Ghalibaf section, Central Iran (NW Semnan) documented a high diversity of shallow-marine microfacies. These deposits in the Ghalibaf section, with a total thickness of 445 m, are characterized by twenty-one microfacies. The carbonate microfacies are deposited into five facies belts, including a lagoon, upper slope, lower slope, platform-margin sand shoals and margin facies. The presence of barrier reefs, intraclasts, oncoids, and grainstone aggregates, along with the absence of vast tidal flat areas, are distinguished. According to the aforementioned evidences, these sediments were deposited on a rimmed carbonate platform. In addition, the heterolithic calciturbidite deposits also show that the carbonate sequences were sedimented on a rimmed carbonate platform. Based on the available data of sequence stratigraphy analysis, seven third-order depositional sequences are bounded by type-1 and type-2 sequence boundaries. The relative sea-level changes between the upper and lower sequence boundaries in accord with the global sea-level curves reveal a reasonable correlation. However, some differences in other sequence boundaries might be due to local tectonic activities in the Qom Formation sedimentary basin, thereby leading to local sea-level changes. Moreover, biostratigraphic data based on the larger foraminifera index markers, including Praebullalveolina curdica, Borelis melo, Dendritina rangi, Meandropsina iranica, Elphidium sp. 14, Neorotalia viennoti, and Miogypsina sp. suggests the Miocene Shallow Benthic Zones, SBZ24-SBZ25 equivalent to the late Aquitanian-Burdigalian timespan. Discinids are a group of inarticulate brachiopods with organophosphatic shells and a very poor fossil record. we report for the first time the presence of this family in the Cenozoic of Patagonia, represented by two new species: Discinisca porvenir sp. nov. and Discinisca messii sp. nov., both found in marine deposits of the Gaiman Formation (Lower Miocene) in Chubut province, Argentina. Specimens come from four localities: Bryn Gwyn, Cañadón del Puma, Isla Escondida, and Punta Loma. The first species, D. porvenir sp. nov., presents a shell with subcircular to subtrapezoidal outline in dorsal view and maximum width located slightly anterior, apex near to the last quarter of the total valve length, and external sculpture formed by narrow concentric bands with irregular edges. In contrast, the second species, D. messii sp. nov., shows a valve with subcircular to circular outline in dorsal view with apex placed near to posterior margin, and external sculpture formed by concentric bands with a rounded triangular profile in transverse section. The new species seem to be related to the living D. lamellosa and D. laevis, respectively, both with a western South American distribution. The Gaiman Formation includes phosphatic nodules and abundant cases of well-preserved phosphatic vertebrate remains. Due to this, and the biostratinomic conditions deduced for vertebrates, the preservation of the brachiopods could be favoured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cojímar Formation, —Lower Miocene (upper part) to Middle Miocene (lower part)—, is a unit in Western Cuba well known for its extensive development and exposure outcrops. It has been widely used in bioestratigraphic studies. However, paleoecological studies on this unit through foraminifera, both planktonic and benthic species, are considered insufficient. The richness and variety of microfossils, especially foraminifera, has allowed us to address the paleoecological aspect. In this paper, the sedimentary environment is established. Besides the systematic classification of these species was updated and the biozonation re-evaluated from planktonic foraminifera. A detailed sampling, from material taken every 15 meters was fulfilled along with a compilation of all species of foraminifera reported for the studied unit. The micropalaeontological analysis allowed the identification of 40 taxa of planktonic foraminifera grouped into 12 genera, being the most representative Globigerina, Globigerinoides, Orbulina, and Globorotalia. Moreover, 226 taxa of benthic foraminifera belonging to 102 genera were determined. These included: Lituolida, Loftusiida, Textulariida, Lagenida, Rotaliida and Miliolida suborders. The main genres represented were Cibicides, Cibicidoides, Cibicobis, Uvigerina, Angulogerina, Anomalinoides, Planulina, Bolivina, Amphistegina, Lenticulina, Nodosaria, and Textularia. Cojímar Formation corresponds to a deep platform, which was determined from the benthic microforaminifera (Uvigerina, Lenticulina, Marginulina) analyzed. Thanatocenoses developed in outer neritic to upper bathyal depths between 100 m - 500m. New reports of both planktonic foraminifera species for that unit as small benthic, such as Anomalinoides flintii, A. trinitatensis, Planulina valued cf. P. mantaensis, Catapsydrax cf. C. dissimilis, Globigerinoides cf. G. obliquus, Globigerinoides primordius, and Hastigerina praesiphonifera were evaluated. As a contribution Gyroidinoides cibaoensis taxon is here first reported to Cuba.

No nordeste brasileiro, sistemas vulcânicos de pequena escala constituem uma ampla província cenozoica tectono-magmática, o Alinhamento Macau-Queimadas, composto de rochas vulcânicas máficas alcalinas. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi caracterizar a petrogênese e o mecanismo de colocação de uma dessas ocorrências, localizada na borda sul da Bacia Potiguar. Para isso, são apresentados dados de mapeamento geológico, petrográficos e geoquímicos de rocha total. Na área estudada, três corpos vulcânicos ocorrem com diferentes geometrias. O mais expressivo tem alojamento magmático controlado tectonicamente, gerando um sistema de diques nas direções NNW-SSE e NE-SW. Petrograficamente, o conjunto mostra feições vulcânicas e intrusivas rasas, constituídas de olivina basaltos e nefelina microgabros. As fácies texturais observadas indicam resfriamento final em nível crustal raso de magmas alcalinos insaturados em sílica, gerando basanitos, melanefelinitos e olivina basaltos. Em termos litoquímicos, são rochas relativamente primitivas (#mg = 65–79), com baixo SiO2 (39–43%) e elevados MgO (12–19%) e Ni (> 200 ppm). Apresentam enriquecimento em terras raras leves (LaN/YbN ~ 35–17) e em elementos incompatíveis, destacando-se anomalias negativas de Rb, K e Hf. Modelamento geoquímico de óxidos com base em equações de balanço de massa e simulações com MELTS mostra taxa de cristalização de ~64% e cumulato composto de olivina, melilita, nefelina, magnetita, apatita e perovskita. Modelamento geoquímico de elementos traço para fusão parcial em equilíbrio sugere taxa de fusão menor que 5% de fonte do tipo granada-lherzolito enriquecido em elementos incompatíveis e contendo anfibólio e/ou flogopita. O mecanismo de colocação é associado à instabilidade do campo de tensões local no Mioceno, que reativou estruturas das unidades encaixantes favorecendo abertura de canais para escoamento de magmas de origem mantélica...

Beetles occupy a vast amount of different ecological roles in both terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. The often very specialised morphology of the adults can frequently be associated with their specific roles. Yet, the ecologically independent larvae of the same species are often unknown; this applies even more so to fossils. Here we report a new fossil beetle larva preserved in Mexican amber. The beetle larva was documented via digital microscopy and X-ray micro-computed tomography (X-ray µCT). The observed features, especially of the trunk, but also the maxillo-labial complex as well as the moulting suture of the head capsule are reminiscent to those of larvae of variegated mud-loving beetles, Heteroceridae. The trunk end is tube-like and protrudes ventro-terminally from abdomen segment 9. While present in other beetle lineages, this morphology is in these lineages, for example, not combined with a simple moulting suture. Some features potentially further supporting an interpretation as a larva of Heteroceridae are not accessible. The interpretation yet remains the most compatible one. Assuming a similar life style to modern larvae of Heteroceridae indicates an original lifestyle associated with running waters, but not within these. Heteroceridae is an ingroup of Byrrhoidea; the fossil record of byrrhoidean larvae is still very scarce. The new fossil hence adds a rare ecological function to the Miocene amber fauna, representing the first fossil record of a larva of Heteroceridae and expanding the fossil record of byrrhoidean larvae. In this paleoecological study we focused on coralline red algae-rich shoal grainstone facies in the Lower Miocene (Aquitanian) carbonates of the Qom Formation in the Vartun section in central Iran. The identified coralline red algae are mainly non-geniculate, although very rare geniculate forms of corallines were also recognized in thin section analysis. The identified algae are represented by Melobesioideae (Lithothamnion cf. valens, Lithothamnion cf. rovereoti, Lithothamnion cf. peleense, and Lithothamnion spp.), Mastophoroideae (Neogoniolithon sp., Spongites spp., and Spongites cf. fruticulosus), Sporolithon spp. (Sporolithon spp. and Sporolithon cf. airoldii), and geniculate coralline (Corallina). The algal taxa mainly display fruticose and lumpy growth forms. The dominance of the former is consistent with high water energy in the identified shoal environment. The presence of Lower Miocene algae indicates that deposition of carbonates took place in warm tropical to subtropical waters in a euphotic marine environment during the Aquitanian. Likewise, high water energy and sediment agitation resulted in taphonomic features such as fragmentation, abrasion, and disarticulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Libro de Resúmenes del VI Simposio del Mioceno-Pleistoceno del Centro y Norte de Argentina, organizado durante 30 de noviembre al 3 de diciembre 2021 en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Introduction: Neotropical seasonally dry forest (NSDF) climatic constraints increased endemism, and phylogenetic niche conservatism in species that are restricted to this biome. NSDF have a large number of endemic Capparaceae taxa, but it is unknown if phylogenetic niche conservatism has played a role in this pattern. Objective: We carried out an evolutionary analysis of the climatic niche of neotropical species of Capparaceae to identify whether the climatic constraints of NSDF have played a major role throughout the family’s evolutionary history. Methods: Using three chloroplastic (ndhF, matK, rbcL) and one ribosomal (rsp3) DNA sequences, we proposed a date phylogeny to reconstruct the evolutionary climatic niche dynamics of 24 Neotropical species of Capparaceae. We tested the relationship between niche dissimilarity and phylogenetic distance between species using the Mantel test. Likewise, we used a set of phylogenetic comparative methods (PGLS) on the phylogeny of Capparaceae to reconstruct the main evolutionary historic events in their niche. Results: Capparaceae originated in humid regions and subsequently, convergent evolution occurred towards humid and dry forest during the aridification phases of the Middle Miocene (16-11 Mya). However, adaptation towards drought stress was reflected only during the precipitation of the coldest quarter, where we found phylogenetic signal (Pagel λ) for gradual evolution and, therefore, evidence of phylogenetic niche conservatism. We found convergent species-specific adaptations to both drought stress and rainfall during the Miocene, suggesting a non-phylogenetic structure in most climatic variables. Conclusions: Our study shows how the Miocene climate may have influenced the Capparaceae speciation toward driest environments. Further, highlights the complexity of climatic niche dynamics in this family, and therefore more detailed analyses are necessary in order to better understand the NSDF climatic constrictions affected the evolution of Capparaceae. A new cyclodorippid crab, Berglundus bretoni n. gen., n. sp. (Cyclodorippidae Ortmann, 1892) from the Astoria Formation (early to middle Miocene) of Washington State is herein described. It represents the fourth genus of cyclodorippids in North America, keeping the stratigraphic range and the palaeogeographic distribution of the Cyclodorippidae unchanged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new genus and species of Hypselosomatinae (Heteroptera: Dipsocoromorpha), Hypsotsijilia bretoni Cifuentes-Ruiz and Brailovsky gen. nov., sp. nov. is herein described based on a female specimen. It represents the first fossil record of Schizopteridae in the early Miocene amber from Chiapas, Mexico. It is compared with related taxa and the estuarine paleoenvironment is discussed, matching the one previously cited for the subfamily in other estuarine amber deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Se propone la enmienda del género Margocolporites y tres nuevas especies fósiles con sus afines actuales provenientes de la Formación Palo Pintado del Mioceno tardío, en la provincia de Salta, Argentina. Ellas son: Parihiatus aquaticus sp. nov. (Pontederia spp., Pontederiaceae), Margocolporites gleditsioides sp. nov. (Gleditsia amorphoides, Fabaceae) y Margocolporites constrictus sp. nov. (Parkinsonia aculeata, Fabaceae). A partir del análisis del registro fósil en el lapso Cretácico–Pleistoceno, se desprende que las nuevas especies constituyen para Sudamérica las primeras citas de polen afín a Pontederia, Gleditsia y Parkinsonia en el intervalo mencionado. Los antecesores de Pontederia spp., Gleditsia amorphoides y Parkinsonia aculeata ya integraban, en el Mioceno de la región, las paleocomunidades acuáticas, palustres y de bosques higrófilos y/o en galería. Se deduce también que las nuevas especies fósiles ocupaban la misma área de distribución nativa que las actuales. Este trabajo aporta consideraciones paleobiogeográficas y una actualización de la paleoflora del noroeste argentino, acrecentando el conocimiento de la historia evolutiva de las Fabaceae y Pontederiaceae.

En el presente trabajo se muestran resultados de la identificación de cinco fósiles vegetales incluidos en ámbar de Simojovel, Chiapas. Las estructuras estudiadas corresponden a dos flores pertenecientes a la Familia Arecaceae; a dos hojas compuestas (foliolos) pertenecientes a la Familia Fabaceae y una hoja aislada perteneciente a la Familia Myrtaceae. La identificación y descripción de este tipo de estructuras fortalece el registro existente de la distribución de esas familias vegetales para el Mioceno en Chiapas. Este estudio contribuye a ampliar el conocimiento de la diversidad de restos vegetales incluidos en el ámbar de Chiapas.

A new species of Philander (Marsupialia, Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae), from levels of the Andalhuala Formation (late Miocene) at Tio Punco locality, Tucumán Province (Argentina) is described. Compared to the living species of the genus, the new species is relatively large and has stronger premolars and molars; the skull has short frontal crests which are more transversally placed regarding the cranial axis; the diastema between P1 and P2 is short; the labial cingulum of P3 is vestigial and incomplete; upper molars have more robust protocones, and the posmetacrista of M3 is less developed. Fossils of Balistes are reported for the first time from Miocene deposits in Cuba including the description of a new taxon, † Balistes vegai sp. nov., and the first record of † B. crassidens on the island. At the same time several taxonomic and nomenclatural issues regarding other fossil specimens are assessed, including the reassignment of some incorrect records of Balistes and the recognition of † B. dubius as valid name. A table of dental characters and character states is provided to facilitate future identification of fossil species of Balistes. The fossil record of triggerfish indicate that crown Balistes evolved at least during the Oligocene, and that by the Miocene was occupying in the Atlantic, similar niches to those exploited by modern taxa. The Cu- and Au-rich Tatatila-Las Minas IOCG skarn deposits in Veracruz (central-east Mexico) are circumscribed to the earliest stages of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) and stand for a metallogenic province directly linked to its tectonomagmatic dynamics. This is the first well-documented case for such metallogenic province. These deposits were formed as skarns between rocks of the Mesozoic carbonate series and Miocene intermediate to acid hypabyssal rocks. New U-Pb zircon and 40Ar/39Ar ages provide evidence for four epochs of magmatic activity in the area: (1) early Permian (Artinskian), in association with the Paleozoic basement, (2) late Oligocene to early Miocene suite of pre-TMVB intrusive rocks, (3) middle to late Miocene suite of early TMVB-related intrusive rocks, and (4) Pliocene intrusive and extrusive rocks of the TMVB, possibly associated with the Los Humeros post-caldera stage. The obtained ages range between 24.60 ± 1.10 and 19.04 ± 0.69 Ma for stage 2, and between 16.34 ± 0.20 and 13.92 ± 0.22 Ma for stage 3. Stage 2 corresponds to a magmatic stage unheard of in the area, until this study. Only stage 3 rocks are associated with the IOCG skarn mineralization, with retrograde stages dated at 12.44 ± 0.09 (chromian muscovite, phyllic association) and 12.18 ± 0.21 Ma (zircon, potassic association). Therefore, the ages of stage-3 intrusive rocks are interpreted to date the formation of the prograde skarn associations (mostly ~15.4 to <14 Ma). The petrogenetic affinity of stage-2 and stage-3 rocks is about the same"the main difference has to do with higher Y and Yb contents in stage-3 rocks (although no affinity with within-plate granites was found), which is suggestive of an interaction of their parental magmas with alkaline magmas that most likely belong to the conterminous and contemporaneous Eastern Mexico Alkaline Province. Petrological indicators (elemental and isotopic) in Cenozoic rocks consistently point to intermediate to acid, metaluminous, I- and S-type rocks that were emplaced in a subduction-related continental arc, within the medium- to high-potassium calc-alkaline series, with high-silica adakitic signatures due associated to deep-sourced magmas that underwent crustal contamination to some degree. The various possible sources for the magmas with adakitic signature in this context can be narrowed down to two of them that are not mutually exclusive: adakitic derived from subducted slab melting and melting-assimilation- storage-homogenization (MASH)-derived adakites. Both sources are, in principle, capable of generating magmas that would eventually produce magmatic-hydrothermal mineralizing systems with an associated variety of ore deposit types, including IOCG. Also, both possible sources for adakites are compatible with the renewed steepening of the subducted slab after a period of flat subduction, for the earliest stage in the evolution of the TMVB. Tras el estudio de una amplia muestra de peces fósiles del terciario de Cuba y la Española, hemos identificado restos que corresponden al género Sphyraena, previamente reportado para el plioceno de Cuba. En el presente artículo extendemos la distribución temporal y espacial de barracuda en el Caribe con tres nuevas localidades del neógeno de Cuba y una para la Española.

The gold mineralization located in Vetas, Santander, consists of auriferous quartz veins hosted in Bucaramanga gneiss rocks, intrusive Jurassic rocks, and intrusive to porphyritic Miocene rocks. This study identified four mineralizing events: (1). Sericite, carbonate (ankerite and calcite?), massive and microcrystalline quartz, sphalerite, adularia, albite, galena, thin pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite. The age for this stage is 10.78 ±0.23Ma (Ar/Ar on sericite). (2). Molybdenite, magnetite with exsolution of ilmenite, As-pyrite, sphalerite, fine-grained pyrite and little chalcopyrite quartz with huge, feathery, fine mosaic, flamboyant and microcrystalline textures and, tourmaline and sericite. (3). Gold and tennantite associated with sphalerite, fine- and coarse-grained pyrite, As-pyrite, chalcopyrite like inclusions, and quartz with flamboyant, mosaic, massive and "comb" textures, and tourmaline. Stage 2 and 3 happened from 7.58 ±0.15 Ma to 6,89±0,41Ma (Ar/Ar on sericite). (4). Thick, thin, and pyrite with arsenic, hematite and microcrystalline quartz (forming breccia texture), and sericite. The age for this stage is 5.24 ±0.10 (Ar/Ar on sericite). Post-mineral: quartz comb, alunite, halloysite, kaolinite, and ferrum hydroxides. The stable isotopes, ∂18O, ∂D, and ∂34S and fluid inclusions analysis infer that fluids were producing a mixture of meteoric and magmatic fluids with low salinity and minimum trapping temperatures between 200°C to 390°C. The mineralogy association, and fluid inclusions, in the first event show characteristic of low sulfidation epithermal. The second stage was hottest and with more magmatic signature over printed an intermediate sulfidation system; show a little more salinity on the fluids and more mineralogical diversity, the third and four events, could show an evolution of this fluid, where it was cooling and impoverishing on metals. Two initials stages are contemporaneous with two magmatic Miocene pulses on the area: the first one of granodiorite composition 10, 9± 0.2 Ma (U/Pb zircon), and the other one rhyodacite with 8.4 ±0.2 y 9.0 ± 0.2 Ma. ABSTRACT The "Yanghecun specimen", a proboscidean specimen represented by a mandible from Miocene of China and previously described as Gomphotheriidae, is here reviewed and described as a new genus and species of Mammutidae: Sinomammut tobieni. This taxon is a longirostrine mastodon, lacking lower tusks, and bearing a wide last molar with oblique and non-inflated lophids, broad transverse interlophids, and yoke-like wear figures. Phylogenetic analysis of Mammutidae based on dental and mandibular features recovered S. tobieni as sister group of the mastodon Mammut. The longirostrine condition and the well-developed lower incisors seem to be primitive for Mammutidae, while the brevirostry is the derived condition, probably emerged during the middle Miocene (12-11 Mya). However, two derived conditions are recognized to the lower tusks: the absence of lower tusks (S. tobieni) and the occasional presence of vestigial lower tusks (Mammut).

The presence of Plagiobrissus grandis is reported in a locality of the middle Miocene (Langhiano) of the Tuxpan Formation in the Papantla-Martínez de la Torre region, North of Veracruz. The finding allows to analyze the space-time distribution of the genus, and corroborates its origin in the Caribbean during Eocene times, as well as its later dispersion during the Miocene to North Carolina in the United States and the coasts of Venezuela and Brazil. The division of the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans during the Miocene-Pliocene, by the emergence of the Panama Isthmus, triggered great changes in the marine currents of the North Atlantic; that event favored the dispersion of the genus from the Miocene to the Recent towards the Mediterranean and the coasts of North Africa, to the Gulf of Guinea. The finding of Plagiobrissus grandis in the middle Miocene and its survival until the present provides an example of the longevity of several echinoid species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RESUMENSe describen nuevos materiales fósiles de anfibios y reptiles hallados en sedimentos referidos a la Formación Cerro Azul (Mioceno Superior), procedentes de numerosas localidades de la provincia de La Pampa, Argentina. Los nuevos registros se basan en un resto craneano de anuro asignado al géneroCeratophrys, restos de caparazón de tortugas terrestres del géneroChelonoidis, vértebras asignables al lagarto de la familia TeiidaeTupinambis, y una vértebra troncal de serpiente comparable al género de colubroideos actualesPhilodryas. Tanto los registros terciarios previos de géneros actuales de anfibios y reptiles en América del Sur, como así también la asociación recuperada en el Mioceno Superior de La Pampa sugieren que la mayoría de los géneros que componen la herpetofauna Neotropical estaban presentes en el Mioceno, patrón similar al observado en otras regiones del mundo.

Neogene Argentinean echinoids are important biostratigraphic tools. New specimens of Schizaster iheringi (de Loriol, 1902) from Early Miocene sedimentites (Chenque Formation, Patagonia, Argentina) allowed us to improve its original description, providing for the first time details of the apical disc and the oral side of test. The species is included into the genus Brisaster: the first unquestionable documented reference to the taxon from the Neogene of Argentina. All previously reported specimens of this species are evaluated, concluding that the stratigraphic range of the genus Brisaster in Patagonia must be restricted to the Early Miocene. Remains of cetaceans, particularly odontocetes, are scarce in the Cuban fossil record. Here we describe the second odontocete (toothed whale) record from the Neogene of Cuba and extends the temporal distribution of this group in the Insular Caribbean into the Middle Miocene. This account is based on two isolated teeth found in limestones of the Güines Formation that crop out in a quarry near the town of Guanábana, Matanzas City, northwestern Cuba. The specimens are referred to the superfamily Physeteroidea incertae sedis. These findings, along with other fossils recovered from other Early and Middle Miocene localities in the region support the hypothesis of a complex, diverse marine vertebrate fauna on the formerly called "Habana-Matanzas channel" and circum-Cuban waters during the Neogene. • Here we present the discovery of two fossilized teeth belonging to an Odontocete found in the Güines Formation, northwestern Cuba. This finding represents the second Odontocete report in the Cuban fossil record and expands the known time range of this group in the Insular Caribbean during the Middle Miocene period. • The specimens are categorized under the superfamily Physeteroidea incertae sedis. • This research sheds light on the limited knowledge of Cetacean fossils, particularly Odontocetes, in Cuba and the circum-Caribbean. It contributes to our understanding of the diverse marine vertebrate fauna that inhabited the Havana-Matanzas channel and the surrounding waters of Cuba during the Neogene era. Se han estudiado los testigos de un total de 190 sondeos mecánicos que atraviesan los depósitos miocenos de la montaña de Montjuïc, en Barcelona. Son depósitos detríticos en parte bien litificados (arenisca, conglomerado) y en parte inconsolidados (marga, arena, grava), que gradan lateral y verticalmente entre si. En los sondeos realizados en el sector oriental de Montjuïc, estos depósitos forman una serie de 100 m de espesor, compuesta por 7 ciclos granocrecientes, de origen deltaico-progradante. Por debajo se dispone una unidad masiva aluvial que se extiende hasta un substrato compuesto por rocas metamórficas del Paleozoico, identificado en el subsuelo del puerto de Barcelona. Los sondeos realizados en el sector occidental cortan una serie de hasta 80 m de espesor compuesta por 4 ciclos detríticos granodecrecientes, de origen aluvial-retrogradante que culminan con depósitos marinos. Esta serie se dispone discordante sobre un substrato de sedimentos continentales del Mioceno Inferior (Burdigaliense), identificado en el subsuelo del extremo oriental de la montaña. La serie deltaica del sector oriental corresponde a una posición estratigráfica por encima de la aluvial del otro sector. Se interpreta que ambos sectores están desplazados por una falla lístrica, de dirección NE-SO, que habría causado el hundimiento del sector oriental y a la vez su basculamiento hacia el NO. Esta falla, a la que se ha denominado falla de Miramar, formaría parte del sistema de fallas extesionales con la misma dirección que han configurado el margen litoral catalán a lo largo del Neógeno. Los depósitos miocenos de ambos sectores están también deformados por un suave anticlinal, de dirección NO-SE, que se reconoce bien tanto en superficie como en subsuelo. Este anticlinal tendría un origen sin-sedimentario, anterior a la falla de Miramar. Se interpreta que sería el resultado de una compactación diferencial entre los sedimentos aluviales y deltaicos precozmente cementados que forman el núcleo del pliegue, y los inconsolidados que forman los flancos. Todas estas estructuras han quedado posteriormente fosilizadas por los depósitos cuaternarios que cubre la montaña de Montjuïc.

The La Pastosa beds constitute a nice example of sediments deposited in the highly meandering reach of the fluvial-tidal transition within an estuary, developed at the top of the "Rionegrense" stage, a marine-estuarine sequence of late Miocene age from Patagonia. Sedimentary facies include channel lags rich in mud intraclasts; cross-bedded sandstones with mud drapes and "set-climber" ripples; heterolithic and herringbone bedding; and inclined heterolithic stratification (IHS), and suggest a strong tidal influence. Tidal facies together with paucity of bioturbation and marine fossils indicate that sedimentation took place mainly in brackish tidal-fluvial channels, bounded by deposits formed in transgressive conditions at the base and at the top of the succession. Channel lag intraformational conglomerates are product of collapse of the cutbank due to erosion in the active margin of lateral migrating meandering channels that eroded adjacent muddy tidal flats and salt marshes. Crossbedded sandstones were accumulated above the conglomerates, forming subtidal sand dunes in the deeper parts of the channels and IHS was formed in point bars. Discontinuities at the base of the channels are the result of the entire channel-system lateral migration, whereas discontinuities capped by small mud pebbles at the base of large IHS sets are the result of seasonally increased run-off and widening of the channels. Alternation of sandy and muddy IHS suggests periodical changes in the position of the turbidity maximum due to seasonal variation of fluvial discharge, in good agreement with the seasonal climate in Patagonia during the late Miocene. IHS sets dipping alternatively to the north and south indicate lateral migration of the east-west running, high-sinuosity channels in the tightly meandering reach of the tidal-fluvial transition. The well preserved vertebrate fauna of Huayquerian mammal age is dominated by the hydrocherid Cardiatherium patagonicum together with whistling ducks and loricariid fishes. This fauna inhabited out-of-channel, freshwater, low-energy restricted environments, like marshes and ponds where the carcasses accumulated and underwent diagenetic fossilization. Repeated lateral migration of meandering channels caused erosion of these deposits and the bones were exhumed and incorporated into the channels, and finally concentrated in channel lags after short transport. Combination of fossilization in a low-energy environment and concentration after short transport in meandering channels make the fluvial-tidal transition "first class" deposits for prospecting vertebrate fossils. In spite of exhumation and transport, vertebrate fossil association closely reflects the environments adjacent to the channels. Excellent preservation is more related to rapid burial than to the energy level of the environment of final accumulation.Los estratos de La Pastosa constituyen un buen ejemplo de sedimentos depositados en la porción meandriforme de alta sinuosidad de un sistema de transición fluvial/mareal en un estuario. Estos representan el tope del "Rionegrense", una sucesión marino marginal del Mioceno tardío de Patagonia. Facies sedimentarias tales como residuos de canal con abundantes intraclastos pelíticos; areniscas con estratificación entrecruzada, cortinas de fango y ondulitas ascendentes en caras de avalancha; estratificación heterolítica horizontal; estratificación tipo "hueso de arenque" (herringbone); y estratificación heterolítica inclinada (IHS) indican una importante influencia mareal. Todo ello, sumado a la escasez de bioturbación y fósiles marinos, indican que la sedimentación ocurrió principalmente en canales de mareafluviales, limitados por depósitos transgresivos tanto en la base como en el tope de la sucesión. Los conglomerados residuales intraformacionales son producto del colapso de la pared erosiva (cutbank) por la migración lateral de canales meandrosos que erodaron las planicies de mareas fangosas y marismas adyacentes. Las areniscas con estratificación entrecruzada se acumularon por encima de los conglomerados, en forma de dunas arenosas submareales dentro del canal y las IHS se formaron por migración de barras en espolón. Las discontinuidades de la base de los canales son el resultado de la migración del sistema canalizado en su totalidad mientras que las discontinuidades en la base de los grandes sets de IHS se deben al incremento estacional de la descarga fluvial con el consecuente ensanchamiento del canal. La alternancia de porciones fangosas y arenosas en las IHS sugiere cambios periódicos en la posición del máximo de turbidez causados por variaciones estacionales en la descarga fluvial, en concordancia con el clima marcadamente estacional que se registra en la Patagonia durante el Mioceno tardío. Los sets de IHS que inclinan al N y al S indican la recurrencia de la migración lateral de canales meandrosos de alta sinuosidad orientados en sentido E-O. La fauna de vertebrados muy bien preservados de edad mamífero Huayqueriense, está dominada por el hidroquérido Cardiatherium patagonicum junto con patos silbadores y peces loricárdidos. Estos organismos vivían fuera de los canales, en ambientes restringidos de agua dulce y baja energía como marismas y lagunas, en donde los esqueletos se acumularon y fosilizaron durante la diagénesis temprana. La repetida migración lateral de los canales produjo erosión de estos depósitos y los huesos fueron exhumados e incorporados a los canales, para finalmente ser concentrados en los depósitos residuales luego de un corto transporte. La combinación de la fosilización en ambientes de baja energía y la posterior concentración luego de un breve transporte en canales meandrosos hacen a los depósitos de la transición fluvial/mareal un objetivo de primera clase en la búsqueda de vertebrados fósiles. Pese a la exhumación y al transporte sufrido, la asociación de vertebrados fósiles refleja fielmente el ambiente adyacente al canal. La excelente preservación depende en mayor medida del rápido sepultamiento antes que de la energía del ambiente de acumulación final.

La asociación de carnívoros miocenos de Grecia incluye un gran número de taxones, descritos en numerosos artículos desde las primeras décadas del siglo XIX. El presente artículo supone un esfuerzo de síntesis de todos estos taxones, suministrando información sobre su historia, localidad, edad, así como su distribución estratigráfica e inferencias paleoambientales. El registro de los carnívoros del Mioceno inferior y medio es pobre, debido a que las localidades existentes y los fósiles son raros. Sin embargo, el Mioceno superior es considerablemente rico, incluyendo numerosos taxones. Las localidades miocenas con carnívoros y su edad se exponen en un cuadro estratigráfico que abarca las Zonas de Mamíferos Europeas desde la MN4 a la MN 13. La localidad tipo, holotipo y algunas notas históricas y morfológicas se suministran para cada taxón. Algunos taxones de carnívoros fueron definidos sobre material griego, nuevas fotografías de los holotipos sonfiguradas. La distribución estratigráfica de los taxones de carnívoros griegos cubren un lapso de tiempo comprendido entre los 19,0 a los 5,3 Ma. La mayoría de los taxones miocenos (Adcrocuta, Hyaenictitherium, Plioviverrops, Protictitherium, Ictitherium, Indarctos, Dinocrocuta, Promephitis) desaparecen al final del Mioceno. La composición de la asociación de carnívoros miocenos de Grecia incluye principalmente vivérridos (Lophocyon, Euboictis), mientras que los hiénidos, percrocútidos, félidos y mustélidos son más escasos. Por el contrario la asociación del Mioceno superior es más rica, incluyendo más subfamilias y más especies; dominando hienas y mustélidos, mientras que los vivérridos están ausentes. La estructura de la comunidad (gremio) de carnívoros del Mioceno superior es similar a la del actual Serengeti, indicativo de un ambiente relativamente abierto, similar a la sabana, de acuerdo con los resultados de otros trabajos realizados en el área.

La historia del estudio de los suoideos de talla pequeña del Mioceno de Eurasia es compleja por varias razones: la escasez de material fósil, un grado alto de convergencia y paralelismo dental entre linajes cercana y lejanamente relacionados, y la frecuente errónea identificación de los fósiles, teniendo como resultado el desarrollo gradual de una taxonomía confusa. Los cambios en la taxonomía por encima del nivel de género, han contribuído a esta complejidad; linajes europeos clasificados como Suidae en 1924 ahora se reparten en tres familias separadas; Suidae, Palaeochoeridae y Sanitheriidae. Estudios recientes han clarificado considerablemente la situación, pero quedan varios asuntos problemáticos por resolver, especialmente en el caso de los Palaeochoeridae. El registro fósil de algunos taxones es limitado, así que es necesario recopilar los especímenes actualmente reconocidos para completer nuestro conocimiento con respecto a ellos. Este trabajo incluye material no descrito previamente de Palaeochoeridae y pequeños Suidae, así como la reinterpretación de algunos fósiles publicados en revistas científicos poco accesibles. Entre estos últimos se incluyen algunos taxones que tienen prioridad sobre nombres propuestos recientemente. Se lleva a cabo una revisión sistemática de estas formas, y se finaliza con una propuesta de revisión taxonómica de Palaeochoeridae, una familia que ha tomado recientemente gran importancia en el debate acerca de los orígenes de Hippopotamidae.

Durante los últimos veinte años, algunos científicos han sugerido que los grandes monos africanos y los linajes humanos surgieron en Europa, un escenario conocido como la “ Hipótesis de la vuelta a Africa”. A pesar de que los homínidos se extendieron en Eurasia durante el Mioceno Medio y Superior debido a las condiciones tropicales que prevalecian en esta region, no podemos descartar el hecho de que ellos estuvieron presentes en Africa (contra algunos autores). En realidad, ellos tuvieron una alta diversidad al mismo tiempo (al menos 10 líneas representadas), incluso si el registro fosil es menos completo que el de Eurasia. Elementos postcraneales de especies africanas sugieren que en algunos carácteres los homínidos modernos estaban ya presentes en el Mioceno Inferior y Medio de Africa, no sólo restringidos a las formas europeas. Teniendo en cuenta las evidencias disponibles, no es posible, en el estado actual de conocimiento, favorecer más un origen europeo que otro africano. Los homínidos vivieron en áreas tropicales del Norte de África y del Sur de Eurasia, cambios faunísticos se sucedieron entre los dos continents a lo largo del Mioceno Medio y Superior, sin que el Tetis actuase como una barrera efectiva a los intercambios entre Europa y Asia.

Tanto los machos como muchas de las hembras del ciervo primitivo Dicrocerus elegans de Sansan (Mioceno Medio, Francia) poseían apéndices craneales de tipo asta que consisten en una protoasta bifurcada y ornamentada con surcos y crestas que es sustentada por un pedículo moderadamente largo. La capacidad de la protoasta de ser expulsada y regenerada es evidente a partir de los ejemplares de desmogue y también por las diferencias histológicas existentes entre la protoasta y el pedículo. El primer apéndice consiste en una vara larga, comprimida lateralmente, y con el ápice bifurcado, sin que se observe ningun límite apreciable entre la protoasta y el pedículo. En las hembras, el ángulo que forman los margenes anterior y posterior del apéndice es más agudo que en los machos (los márgenes son más paralelos en vista lateral). Tras el primer desmogue, la base de la protoasta es más amplia que la sección distal del pedículo, y se desarrolla una estructura similar a la roseta en la parte medial. Con los sucesivos desmogues, el pedículo se acorta y su sección se hace más circular, mientras que la protoasta es cada vez más grande y las ramas son más largas y parten más separadas desde la base sin interposición de un tramo basal. En las hembras, las ramas son más cortas, especialmente la anterior, y su trazado es rectilíneo en vez de curvo como en los machos. En los ejemplares seniles, las ramas son más cortas y de longitud más similar entre ellas. Es frecuente la presencia de ramas accesorias, así como irregularidades de este patrón básico. Los análisis discriminantes y de componentes principales realizados muestran una clara separación entre los morfotipos atribuidos a machos y a hembras. Existen importantes diferencias histológicas con las verdaderas astas que sugieren que el desmogue podría no haber sido anual. Se confirma que no se desarrolla hueso esponjoso y que la mineralización del protoasta progresa centrífugamente desde el centro hasta la periferia. El desmogue tiene lugar una vez que los tejidos están completamente mineralizados (muertos). A diferencia de otras protoastas, el ciclo en Dicrocerus era completo dado que están documentadas tanto la fase de muda del terciopelo, como la de exposición del hueso desnudo antes del desmogue. Dadas las similitudes en el ciclo de crecimiento, y dado que la base de la protoasta presenta parcialmente una estructura similar a la roseta, las protoastas de Dicrocerus y las astas parecen ser apéndices homólogos. Las diferencias histológicas podrían estar relacionadas con diferencias en el ciclo hormonal que regulaba su crecimiento. Diferencias que podrían guardar relación con el hecho que i) Dicrocerus vivió en ambientes tropicales, ii) las hembras también poseían protoastas. Cabe resaltar que las verdaderas astas aparecieron varios millones de años más tarde de que surgieran las protoastas y otros apéndices craneales en Ruminantia, y en coincidencia con la transición climática del Mioceno Medio.

Se describe una especie nueva perteneciente al género Eriosachila, hallada en la Formación Colón (Oligoceno - Mioceno), de Cuba. Esta es la segunda especie perteneciente a este género que se encuentra en estratos posteocénicos.

La Cuenca de Aluminé constituye un área de acumulación volcano-sedimentaria localizada en el retroarco andino a los 39°S. Forma parte de un conjunto de depocentros denominado Cuenca de Bío Bío-Aluminé, integrando su parte más austral. Estudios estratigráficos, geocronológicos, sedimentológicos y estructurales realizados sobre el relleno de la cuenca indican que la misma habría evolucionado en dos etapas: una etapa extensional oligocena, integrada por lavas basálticas y sedimentos producidos por el retrabajo del material volcanoclástico asociado a depósitos piroclásticos (Formación Rancahue) y otra etapa contraccional del Mioceno Tardío, con depósitos aluviales y piroclásticos coronados por efusiones basálticas (formaciones Chimehuín y Tipilihuque). El relleno de la etapa extensional es fuertemente volcánico y tiene proveniencia del oeste, vinculado al profuso volcanismo basáltico oligoceno del área andina chilena. La etapa contraccional adopta la forma de una cuenca ultramontana, localizada entre las cadenas levantadas principalmente por la inversión de estructuras extensionales mesozoicas y muestra fuerte asimetría y proveniencia desde el este. Evidencias estructurales y geomorfológicas indican la existencia de un hiatus depositacional entre ambas etapas.The Aluminé Basin is a volcano-sedimentary depocentre located in the Andean retroarc at 39°S. It is the southern part of a major depositional system: the Bío Bío-Aluminé Basin. Stratigraphical, geochronological, sedimentological and structural analysis allow us to conclude that the basin evolved through two stages: an Oligocene extensional stage filled with basalts and reworked volcaniclastic and pyroclastic deposits (Rancahue Formation) and a Miocene contractional stage, filled with alluvial and pyroclastic deposits covered by basaltic lavas (Chimehuín and Tipilihuque formations). The volcanic-rich (basaltic) infill of the extensional stage has a western provenance and was derived from widespread magmatic activity that took place during the Oligocene in the adjacent cordilleran axis. The contractional stage basin is an intramontane depocentre limited by uplifted blocks generated mainly by the inversion of Mesozoic extensional faults. It is strongly asymmetric and shows eastern provenance. Structural and geomorphological evidence indicate the existence of a non-depositional hiatus between the two stages.

La zona de estudio muestra la estratigrafía de la Cuenca Térraba, que se describe a continuación: La Formación Tulín está representada principalmente por gabros y basaltos vesiculares en almohadillas con texturas microdolerítica y geoquímicamente similares. Se observan intercalaciones de coladas basálticas con lentes de sedimentos epiclásticos. Se describen pequeños stocks de gabros de textura doleríticas. Su edad es Cretácico Superior al Eoceno Inferior. La Formación Descartes fue definida por primera vez en esta área. Está compuesta por intercalaciones centimétricas a decimétricas de areniscas y lutitas color negro y rojo a rosado verdoso. La formación se encuentra bien estratificada con buena laminación pero también puede encontrarse estratificación masiva. Localmente poseen una fuerte alteración hidrotermal que le confieren un color verdosa. Es datada como Paleoceno Tardío basado en el microfósil Morozovella velascoensis. La Formación Caraigres corresponde a la cuenca del Valle Central, está compuesta por intercalaciones de areniscas y lutitas, color gris a negro con influencia volcánica. Su edad es Oligoceno-Mioceno Inferior Basal. Aunque el contacto inferior no fue observado, las evidencias de campo hacen suponer que el contacto Caraigres y Descartes es de carácter transicional. La Formación Curré está compuesta por areniscas negras finas a gruesas, lutitas y conglomerados grises oscuros volcaniclásticos intercalados. Estos conglomerados forman paquetes métricos bien estratificados o se presentan como laminaciones intercaladas dentro de areniscas. Su edad correspondecon el Mioceno Medio. La Formación Grifo Alto se compone de andesitas porfiríticas con fenocristales de piroxenos, anfíboles y plagioclasas además de basaltos porfiríticos con augita. También se han observado tobas finas y gruesas muy meteorizados. Todos estos depósitos pueden tener alguna alteración hidrotermal ya sea piritizaciones y/o arcillitizaciones. Edad es Plioceno-Pleistoceno. Depósitos Lacustres Altos Chiral se definen por primera vez como una unidad nueva en la estratigrafía nacional. Estos lacustres se componen de depósitos arcillosos, café anaranjados, poco consolidados y sobreyacen en discordancia angular sobre la formación Descartes. Los depósitos lacustres afloran en los Altos Chiral y Alto San Juan al oeste de San Marcos de Tarrazú. Edad probable Plio-Pleistoceno(?). Terrazas aluvionales corresponden con depósitos aluvionales compuestos por fragmentos métricos de composición variada, aunque principalmente volcánicos. Los bloques pueden presentar fuerte alteración hidrotermal. Estos depósitos , se localizan en la zona de San Marcos, Sta. María, Copey y los poblados de Londres y Naranjito en Quepos. La zona estudiada presenta una fuerte fracturación por fallas inversas y transcurrentes. La deformación se inició con fallas inversas, las que posteriormente fueron cortadas por fallas transcurrentes. La falla transcurrente mas importante es la falla Paquita-Chonetera , ésta afecta las secuencias sedimentarias dejando expuesto el Paleoceno.The studied area belongs to the Térraba basin. The stratigraphy is represented by the following units: The Tulín Formation is composed by gabbros and pillow lavas with geochemistry similar. The pillow lava has vesicular and microdolerite texture. There are basaltic lavas interbedded with epiclastic sediments. The age of this formation is Upper Cretaceous to Basal Eocene. Descartes Formation was defined by first time in this area. The formation is composed by interbedded sandstones and mudstones. The colors of the rocks are black, red and greenish pink. The strata beds are good with centimetric laminations, but they are massive strata beds; locally the sequence present hydrothermal alterations and the rocks become light green color. The age is Late Paleocene using the Morozovella velascoensis foraminifera. Caraigres Formation belongs to the Valle Central Basin. It is composed by interbedded sandstones and mudstones, with black and gray color, the volcanic influence is common. The age of the formation is Oligocene to Basal Miocene. The geologic contact between Caraigres Formation and Descartes formations probably transitional. Curré Formation is composed by fine and coarse black sandstones, mudstones and dark grey volcaniclastic conglomerates. The conglomerates has metric packages with good stratification or interbedded with sandstones. The age is Middle Miocene. Grifo Alto Formation consists of porphyritic andesites with plagioclases, pyroxenes, amphiboles phenocrysts and porphyritics basalts with augite. It is possible to find fine and coarse weathering tuffs, and hydrothermal alteration. The age of this formation is Pliocene to Pleistocene. Altos Chiral Lacustrines Deposits are defined by first time in this study like a new geologic unit. It is composed by orangized mudstones. It is not consolidated and it overlays Descartes Formation by angular unconformity. The outcrops are near Altos Chiral and Alto San Juan, to the west of San Marcos de Tarrazú. The age of this new unit probably is Plio-Pleistocene? Alluvial Terraces consist of alluvial deposits, with metric blocks of different kind of volcanic rocks. Some blocks have hydrothermal alteration. The outcrops are near San Marcos, Sta. María, Copey and Londres and Naranjito near Quepos. The study area presents a strong tectonic influence, the deformation started with reverse faults which were subsequently cut by transcurrent faults. The most important fault is Paquita-Chonetera fault, which expose the Descartes Formation.
