Kraft lignin as an emerging renewable feedstock can be used to produce fuels, chemicals, and materials. Hardwood kraft lignin bears intrinsic variation due to wood species and the isolation process. The structure and property variation of hardwood kraft lignin could introduce new challenges and opportunities for its application. To better understand such variation, seven kraft lignin samples, originated from southern mixed hardwood (North America), northern mixed hardwood (North America), and Asian mixed hardwood, were isolated from commercial kraft pulping black liquor using both LignoBoost and LignoForce processes. Modern analytical techniques were used to elucidate the characteristics of mixed hardwood kraft lignins, including chemical composition, molecular weight, functional groups, and thermal properties. All lignin samples had a lignin content over 90% (92% to 96%) with one exception, which was northern mixed hardwood kraft lignin with 86% of lignin content and 6% polysaccharides. The elemental and methoxy analyses revealed the expected variation of hardwood kraft lignins with the methoxy content ranging from 0.85 to 1.20 per C9 unit. The weight average molecular weight exhibited a higher variation (from 4800 to 1895 Da) with a descending order of southern mixed hardwood kraft lignins, northern mixed hardwood lignins, and Asian mixed hardwood lignins. The aliphatic hydroxy groups ranged from 14 to 25 per 100 C9 units, and phenolic hydroxy groups ranged from 65 to 112 per 100 C9 units. The catecholic group content ranged from 12 to 34 per 100 C9 units, which is higher than softwood kraft lignin. The lignins isolated from the rapid displacement heating (RDH) pulping process were more condensed than from the regular kraft pulping process. 2D HSQC and quantitative 13C NMR revealed the drastic structure change upon kraft pulp with the low abundance of native lignin linkages and formation of new interunit linkages, such as stilbene, enol ethers, and 1-1'/5'. The total hydroxyl content calculated from 31P NMR was 5.24 mmol/g KL. The aliphatic hydroxyl content was 1.04 mmol/g KL, and phenolic hydroxyl content was 4.20 mmol/g KL. Of the phenolic hydroxyl groups, the contribution of syringyl (S) and guaiacyl (G) was 1.02 and 0.97 mmol/g KL, respectively. The S/G molar ratio of KL calculated from 31P NMR was 1.05. The carboxyl content was 0.44 mmol/g KL.

There is a current and pressing need to develop engineering standards for timber- and other wood-based mats. In 2018 a group of mat producers and users began discussing a potential grading specification standard specific to mats. There are large gaps in the literature regarding the performance of the available raw materials as well as bolt-laminated mat systems. This work represents a novel attempt to begin to assess the mechanical properties of timber mats. Eight-inch deep mixed hardwood timbers were graded according to an experimental specification standard. Then, they were drilled and bolt laminated into 28 three-timber composite mats that were 24 inches (60.96 cm) in width. The bending stiffness (modulus of elasticity [MOE]) and strength (modulus of rupture [MOR]) performance were evaluated with a static bending test. The 5th percentile nonparametric tolerance limit (5% NTL) and design value for fiber stress in bending (Fb) were calculated. To compare the structural changes that occurred in KL, two milled wood lignins (MWLs) were prepared from the same hardwood samples used in the production of KL. Elemental analysis showed that the MWL from acacia (MWL-aca) and mixed hardwood (MWL-mhw) had almost similar carbon content, methoxyl content, and C9 formula. KL had high carbon content but low oxygen and methoxyl contents compared to MWLs. The C9 formula of KL was determined to be C9H7.29O2.26N0.07S0.12(OCH3)1.24. The Mw of KL and MWLs was about 3000 Da and 12,000–13,000 Da, respectively. The structural features of KL and MWLs were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (1H, 13C NMR). The analyses indicated that KL underwent severe structural modifications, such as γ-carbon cleavage, demethylation, and polycondensation reactions during kraft pulping, which resulted in increased aromatic content and decreased aliphatic content. The main linkages in lignin, β-O-4 moieties, were hardly detected in the analysis as these linkages were extensively cleaved by nucleophilic attack of SH- and OH- during pulping.

Autohydrolysis (AH) prior to the kraft process is one way to valorize hemicelluloses. The presented results show that AH also has a beneficial effect insofar as kraft cooking can be substituted by soda cooking, and higher brightness levels can be achieved under the same bleaching conditions. The lignin has more free phenolic groups after AH, which is attributable to depolymerization, and which could partly explain the better pulping and bleaching results. Structural performance of chemically modified oriented strand board (OSB) has drawn great attention from builders, home insurance companies, and panel manufacturers. This study was conducted to provide time-dependent creep and moisture change-induced mechano-sorptive (MS) effect data from borate-treated and randomly formed strand board. The strand boards were lab-fabricated with flakes from southern yellow pine and mixed hardwoods. Commercial liquid phenol-formaldehyde resin was used as the binder. The treatments involved in the study were one level of zinc borate, one level of calcium borate, and two species groups that included separate controls. The load level, equivalent to 25% of the static bending modulus of rupture, was selected as a long-term constant load. Creep at 65% constant relative humidity (RH) developed in a normal time-dependent fashion and the Burger body creep model with four spring-dashpot elements was found appropriate to predict the creep response of borate modified strand board. Noticeable influence of borate modification on the fractional deflection was demonstrated under changing RH for both the absorption and desorption cycles. The measured fractional deflection due to the MS effect followed a linear relationship with moisture content change. The established material constants for various strand boards provided a way to predict the structural performance of treated strand board under varying RH conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Disposing of solid waste and demand of fossil fuel have become the great challenges in the 21st century. Malaysia as one of the top producers of palm oil and wooden furniture in the world is well positioned to take the challenge of the reuses of its enormous output of lignocellulosic biomass such as oil palm trunk, sawdust of rubberwood and sawdust of mixed hardwood generated from palm oil and furniture industries. Before these lignocellulosic biomasses can be used to produce fuel and major chemicals which are normally derived from petroleum, lignocellulosic materials have to be converted to glucose. Hence, it is a need to investigate the conversion efficiency and to determine the optimum conditions for the conversion of lignocellulosic materials to glucose. This present work is aimed to investigate the potential use of oil palm trunk, rubberwood sawdust and mixed hardwood sawdust as an alternative feedstock for lignocellulosic glucose production. This research also served to identify the optimum two-stage concentrated acid hydrolysis condition that can convert these three lignocellulosic biomasses to glucose efficiently. Two stages concentrated sulfuric acid hydrolysis process using different acid concentration and reaction time were performed on those lignocellulosic biomass samples. The optimum results for oil palm trunk, rubberwood and mixed hardwood sawdust were obtained by using 60% acid concentration reacted for 30min during 1st stage hydrolysis and subsequently followed by another 60min reaction time with 30% acid concentration during the 2nd stage hydrolysis. The results, showed that oil palm trunk has a higher glucose conversion yield than those of rubberwood sawdust and mixed hardwood sawdust. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The ForNBM was applied to the Nashwaak Experimental Watershed Project in central New Brunswick, Canada. The data represented a mixed hardwood site and included information about nutrient leaching, foliage and wood biomass, leaf fall, and ancillary information required for model initialization. Ancillary information included forest cover type, stand density, forest floor depth, soil rooting depth, soil texture, soil substrate type, initial amounts of biomass and N, S, Ca, Mg, and K content in foliage, wood, and roots, and mineral soil nutrient contents in soil solution, on ion-exchange sites, and in the soil.The authors were able to calibrate the model with existing data. The model simulated observed monthly leaching reasonably well. The r2-values of model simulations compared with field observations of monthly leaching of NO3−_N, NH4+_N, Ca, Mg, and K were 0.78, 0.7, 0.78, 0.84, and 0.75, respectively. Modeled multi-year cumulative leaching of NO3−_N, NH4+_N, Ca, Mg, and K compared with actual values gave r2-values close to one for all cases considered.The results also showed that soil nutrient leaching had increased approximately five-fold for NO3−_N, 80% for NH4+_N, 71% for K, 20% for Ca, and 14% for Mg during the 3 years following a stem-only harvest operation applied watershed-wide. However, the model simulation showed that increased nutrient leaching during the 11 years following the stem-only harvest was small compared with the amounts removed in the biomass during the harvest. From 1989 to 1996, ion deposition in precipitation, throughfall, andstemflow were measured under a deciduous and a coniferous stand, located in the Lake Clair Watershed, during the growing and the dormant seasons. During the growing season, throughfall deposition under bothstands was significantly depleted in H+ and NH4+ compared with wet deposition, and a significant uptake of NO3- was observed under the coniferous canopy. Deposition of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, Cl-, and SO42- was significantly higher in the throughfall than in the wet precipitation. During the growing season, the coniferous stand was more efficient in retaining nitrogen (NH4+ and NO3-), while H+ was more intensively retained in the deciduous stand. Significant interactions between precipitation and forest canopies were also observed during the dormant season: throughfall depositions of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, and Cl- were significantly higher than wet precipitation under both canopies, while throughfall SO42- was significantly enriched only under the coniferous stand.Using a Na+ ratio method, foliar leaching was found mostly responsible for the throughfall enrichment on a full-year basis in both stands, with values averaging 61, 73, and 96% of the total throughfall fluxes for Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+, respectively. Under both stands, net canopy exchange (NCE) of base cations, expressed on a monthly basis, were correlated to water volume and to H+ and SO42- deposition.
