Strawberries fruit are highly appreciated by consumers due to their high nutritive value, sweet taste, and fruity flavour. However, strawberries are highly perishable fresh produce, with very short storage period and rapidly are deteriorated mainly by fungal diseases. In the present study, strawberry fruit were purchased at a local market. Examining fruit microflora after 5 days of storage at 12°C and 95% relative humidity (RH), in an ozone-enriched atmosphere (0.05-0.2-1.0 ppm), a decrease of colonies of bacteria (at 1.0 ppm of ozone), and of fungi and yeast (at ≥0.05 ppm ozone) was observed. In another batch of strawberries, fruit were inoculated with 20 μL of spore suspensions (106 spores mL-1) of Botrytis cinerea and subjected to either clear air or ozone-enriched air (0.05-0.2-1.0 ppm) at 12°C and 95% RH. Fungal lesion growth decreased at the high ozone levels, after the 3rd day of storage. Fungal spore production was decreased up to 32, 48.3 and 60.9% for 0.05, 0.2 and 1.0 ppm of ozone concentrations, respectively. In vitro studies performed on fungal raised on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) for 6-7 days at 12°C and 95% RH revealed no direct effects of ozone on fungal growth (no great effects on colony growth) per se, implying that suppression of pathogen development was due in a large part to the impacts of ozone on fruit-pathogen interactions. Indeed, the reproductive phase of the pathogen was greatly affected by the ozone application, with decreased spore production up to 56% in .0.2 ppm of ozone or complete inhibition at 1.0 ppm of ozone. Therefore, ozone is considered as an alternative sanitizer for the fresh produce preservation.

The changes in the antioxidant capacity, anti‐inflammatory, and wound healing properties of strawberry fruits as a consequence of the storage in atmospheres enriched in oxygen and carbon dioxide were investigated. Berries were exposed to two different gas compositions: 70% O2 + 20% CO2 and 90% O2 + 10% CO2, and stored for up to 20 days at 5°C. The antioxidant capacity, assessed through DPPH and FRAP methods, decreased around 17% in samples exposed to 70% O2 + 20% CO2 at day 20. However, the antioxidant activity of fruits stored in 90% O2 + 10% CO2 was maintained until day 20 and experienced an increase of around 10% on day 10. Moreover, strawberry stored in 90% O2 + 10% CO2 at days 5?10 showed an improved suppression of the pro‐inflammatory genes Cox‐2 and iNOS up to 30% higher than samples at day 0 in an in vitro LPS‐stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage culture. In addition, berries exposed to 90% O2 + 10% CO2 at day 10 showed a human dermal fibroblast migration 30% higher than samples at day 0 in an in vitro skin‐fibroblast‐migration model. Therefore, evidence suggests that strawberry storage in 90% O2 + 10% CO2 can be a promissory alternative to offer fruits with enhanced bioactivity. Fil: Van de Velde, Franco. Wild rocket ( Diplotaxis tenuifolia L.) is packaged under modified atmosphere (MA) to maintain quality after harvest. Evaluation of the quality of packaged produce is complex because only visual quality can be accessed through the packaging film. A method for volatile analysis that allowed for multiple sampling without affecting the fresh produce was applied to wild rocket stored for 14 days at 5 °C and 10 °C in closed glass jars to resemble MA packaging of fresh produce. Changes in the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored during storage using solid-phase microextraction. The gas concentration was continuously monitored with non-invasive sensors, and from these data, the respiration rate, cumulative respiration, respiratory quotient (RQ), and the low O 2 limit (LOL) was determined. The LOL of wild rocket was 2.1 kPa O 2. Below this level the RQ increased and above this level the RQ was unaffected. Most VOCs were released from wild rocket during storage under restricted conditions (O 2 0.1 ng g −1 fresh weight) during prolonged storage under moderate O 2 conditions (O 2 ≥2.1 kPa). Under these conditions, carbon disulfide, nitromethane, and 2-ethylfuran were linearly related to cumulative respiration. Large variations were observed between replicate samples for dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, pentane, and acetone, although the leaves were sampled carefully at experimental start to reduce the biological variation. The results show that the VOC profile of wild rocket change in response to gas composition, temperature and storage time.

The salacca (Salacca zalacca cv. Pondoh) fruits were stored in various modified atmosphere conditions in the impermeable cuverles with the variation of oxygen concentration of 2, 4, 6 and 8%. carbon dioxide concentration of 1, 2. 3 and 4% and nitrogen concentration as the rest. The variation of temperature was 12, 20 and 24 C. Gases within each cuvette were replaced daily. The respiration rate of the fruit was mudded based on the enzyme kinetic theory. The result showed that the respiration model Mows the Michaelis-Menten enzyme kinetic, with CO2 as the uncompetitive inhibitor. The model was fit to predict the respiration rate of the fruit.

This study was carried out to see the effect of modified atmosphere storage on the storage life of Southport White Globe (SWG) onions. SWG onions were packed in polyethylene bags and stored at 20°C for 14 weeks. To increase its effectiveness, phorone, KMnO4 and Ca(OH)2 at various levels were also placed inside the polyethylene bags. Production of CO2, O2 and ethylene were monitored fortnightly, and at the end of storage, onion sprouting, rotting, and rooting were also observed. The results show that phorone at 2 ml tended to stimulate CO2 production, while KMnO4, Ca(OH)2 at either 200 g or 400 g inhibited CO2 production, however, ethylene elimination tended to stable. No root growths were detected. Disease incidents were also prohibited by KMnO4, Ca(OH)2, and KMnO4 plus Ca(OH)2 at 400 g. On the other hand, those chemicals stimulated onion sprouting.

In this study,performance of modified atmosphere storage packaging (MAP), 1-MCP and MAP+1-MCPapplications on the Bacon avocado variety was determined. The fruits which are applied1-MCP and/or placed in modified atmosphere bags were stored at 6ºC and 90-95%relative humidity for 3 months in cold stores and were analyzed every month.The weight loss, fruit flesh firmness, titratable acid content, pH, totalsoluble solid content, fruit skin and flesh color, incidence of physiologicaldisorders and fungal decay and appearance were determined during storage.According to the results, modified atmosphere storage and 1-MCP application werefound to be advisable., Bu çalışmada Bacon avokado çeşidinin modifiyeatmosfer paketleme (MAP), 1-Metilsiklopropan (1-MCP) uygulaması ve MAP+1-MCPuygulamasının muhafaza performanslarına etkisi belirlenmiştir. 1-MCP uygulananve/veya modifiye atmosfer torbalarına konan meyveler 6°C’de sıcaklıkta ve%90-95 oransal nemde 3 ay süreyle depolanmış ve depolama süresince ayda birdepodan çıkarılan örnekler analizlenmiştir. Muhafaza süresince ağırlıkkayıpları, meyve eti sertliği, asit miktarı, pH, SÇKM miktarı, kabuk ve etrengi, fizyolojik ve mantarsal bozulmalar ve görünüş belirlenmiştir. Eldeedilen bulgulara göre modifiye atmosferde muhafaza ve 1-MCP uygulamalarıbaşarılı bulunmuştur.

Tomatoes, strawberries, table grapes and plums were inoculated with Botrytis cinerea (grey mould), transferred to chilled storage (13 °C) and exposed to 'clean air' or low-level ozone-enrichment (0.1 μmol mol-1). Ozone-enrichment resulted in a substantial decline in spore production as well as visible lesion development in all treated fruit. Exposure-response studies performed specifically on tomato fruit (exposed to concentrations ranging between 0.005 and 5.0 μmol mol-1 ozone) revealed lesion development and spore production/viability to be markedly reduced in produce exposed to ozone prior to, or following, infection with B. cinerea; higher concentrations/duration of exposure yielding greater reductions in lesion development and spore production/viability. Impacts on Botrytis colonies grown on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) for 5-6 days at 13 °C and 95% relative humidity (RH) revealed less effects than studies on fruit inoculated with the pathogen in vivo. Taken as a whole, the results imply that ozone-induced suppression of pathogen development is due, to some extent, to impacts on fruit-pathogen interactions. This work suggests that ozone may constitute a desirable and effective residue-free alternative to traditional postharvest fungicide practices. Data presented illustrate that optimal ozone treatment regimes are likely to be commodity-specific and require detailed investigation before such practices can be contemplated commercially. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Ozone is considered the most economically important air pollutant worldwide. Experimental studies reveal contrasting effects of ozone on foliar pathogens with several successful applications in postharvest level. Oranges, grapes and tomatoes were infected with green mould (Penicillium digitatum) and grey mould (Botrytis cinerea), then fruit incubated in 'clean air' or an ozone-enriched atmosphere (concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 1.0 ppm). In vivo and in vitro experimentation revealed lesion development and spore production to be markedly reduced in fruit maintained in an ozone-enriched atmosphere. Higher concentrations/duration of exposure resulted in greater impacts on lesion development/spore production, with considerable benefits resulting from exposure to low levels of ozone (i.e., below the 0.2 ppm threshold set for the protection of human health). In vitro studies performed on fungi raised on potato dextrose agar (PDA) for 6-8 days at 13°C and 95% relative humidity (RH) revealed no direct effects of ozone on fungal development, implying that suppression of pathogen development was due in a large part to the impacts of ozone on fruit-pathogen interactions.

In recent years, persimmon crop has become very relevant in Mediterranean Spain, where the production of this fruit centres on only one variety, persimmon cv. Rojo Brillante, majorly located in the Valencian Community. The main postharvest disorders manifested by ‘Rojo Brillante’ persimmons are flesh browning, which is associated with mechanical damage and chilling injury displayed after low-temperature storage. Previous research has determined the postharvest conditions that lead fruit to develop such alterations. However, the biochemical process behind flesh browning and chilling injury disorders is still unknown. Currently, there is special interest in introducing cultivars from other countries to broaden the varietal range. Besides, prolonging the fruit storage period to supply the markets according to the demand is one of the main challenges. In this context, the present Thesis approached three main objectives: 1) Studying the biochemical process implied in the main physiological postharvest disorders manifested in persimmon fruits by focusing on changes in the fruit redox state; 2) Evaluating postharvest treatments to preserve fruit quality during cold storage; 3) Assessing the physico-chemical and nutritional quality of persimmon cultivars introduced from other countries to increase the varietal range.

To unravel the mechanism by which low level atmospheric ozone-enrichment (0.05 μmol mol −1 ) increases the shelf-life of tomato fruit ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) by suppressing the growth of pathogens ( Botrytis cinerea ), protein yield and composition were examined during and following exposure to the gas at 13 °C/95% RH. Ozone-enrichment caused marked changes in protein yield and composition in control tomato fruit and suppressed shifts in the proteome induced by wounding/fungal attack. Wound/fungal-inoculation with B. cinerea resulted in a 7% increase in protein yield, and the down-regulation of at least 32 proteins. A number of proteins affected under ozone and wound/fungal-inoculation treatments are involved in the control of cellular oxidative status. Proteins that may be enhanced under oxidative stress were induced during ozone exposure (e.g. thioredoxin peroxidase-TPX), but suppressed following transfer to ‘clean air’ (e.g. ascorbate peroxidase-APX1). Constitutively-expressed proteins tended to increase reversibly under ozone-treatment, however proteins involved in ripening such as an enzyme related to ethylene biosynthesis (1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase-ACO) were markedly reduced in ozone-treated tomato fruit but increased in wound-inoculated fruit. Levels of proteins involved in carbohydrate metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, terpenoid and flavonoid biosynthesis differentiated among the treatments. The presented dataset makes a central contribution to a comprehensive analysis of the manner in which tomato fruit react to ozone-enrichment and/or pathogen infection during storage/transit.

In een netwerk van 10 exportbedrijven is gedurende twee jaar verpakkingsonderzoek uitgevoerd, met als doel om het gebruik van een dichtere folie in combinatie met een droger vulmiddel voor de consumentenverpakking van vaste planten en leliebollen breder in de praktijk te stimuleren. Genoemd verpakkingsconcept bleek in eerder onderzoek van PPO het uitstalleven van vaste planten en bollen aanzienlijk te verlengen. Tevens is een aantal nieuwe substraten getest op hun toepasbaarheid als vulmiddel in consumentenverpakking van vaste planten en leliebollen. Gedurende de loop van het project is het netwerk regelmatig bijeengekomen voor overleg over de opzet en de resultaten van de verpakkingsproeven en over de implementatie van de nieuwe verpakkingsconcepten op het bedrijf. In het eerste onderzoeksjaar, waarin op tien exportbedrijven vaste planten en leliebollen zijn verpakt, werd nog eens bevestigd dat in een dichtere folie met droger turfmolm de kwaliteit van planten langer behouden blijft. Na dit jaar is een groot deel van de exportbedrijven die nog gebruik maakte van consumentenverpakkingen van microperforatie met vochtig turfmolm, overgestapt op dit nieuwe verpakkingsconcept. Het onderzoek in het tweede jaar heeft geresulteerd in mogelijke alternatieven voor turfmolm als vulmiddel voor vaste planten en bollen in consumentenverpakkingen; in bark en houtvezel, beide gemengd met rijstkaf, bleef de productkwaltiteit beter behouden dan in turfmolm. De exportbedrijven waren zeer positief over de productkwaliteit in deze substraatmengsels.

Hoe zorg je dat planten hun kwaliteit tijdens de afzetfase zo goed mogelijk behouden? MA-verpakking kan hier een belangrijke rol in spelen

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar la conservación de fresas frescas envasadas en: (i) atmósfera con alta concentración de oxígeno (AAO) en envases con atmósfera modificada en equilibrio (AME) (película permeable), (ii) AAO en envases con AME con adición de un adsorbedor de etileno (AE) y (iii) envases macroperforados (aire), tomados como referencia. En los envases con AME se empleó una película de permeabilidad selectiva al oxígeno y al dióxido de carbono. La temperatura de almacenamiento fue de 7 ºC. La composición gaseosa fue 95 % de oxígeno y 5 % de nitrógeno. Se efectuaron conteos de levaduras, bacterias ácido lácticas y microorganismos psicrófilos y anaerobios totales. Se evaluaron las pérdidas de peso por pérdida de humedad, afectaciones por Botrytis u otros hongos y defectos. Al tercer día la pérdida de peso por defectos superó 10 % en las frutas envasadas en AME. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the preservation of fresh strawberries packaging in: (i) high oxygen atmosphere (AAO) in equilibrium modified atmosphere (AME) packages (permeable film), (ii) AAO packages in AME with a ethylene adsorbing packaging material, (iii) macroperforated packaging (air) which was taken as reference. For AME packages a permeable packaging film with a selective permeability for oxygen and carbon dioxide. Storage temperature was 7ºC. The gas mixture composition was 95% oxygen and 5% nitrogen. Counts of yeast, lactic-acid bacteria and psychrotrophic total anaerobic microrganisms were followed. The loss of weight due loss of moisture, spoilage by Botrytis or other mould and visual defects were evaluated. At third day the loss of visual defects was higher 10% in fruits packaged in AME. The postharvest quality of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) fruit was evaluated after treatment with eucalyptus (Ec: Eucalyptus globulus L.) and cinnamon (Cn: Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Blume) volatile oil compounds and storage at 13 °C during or following vapour exposure. Fruit decay decreased in fruit treated with oil vapours and transfer to 'ambient air' (AA). Cn-treated tomato maintained fruit firmness during exposure, but the effects were not persistent following storage to AA. However, no effects on fruit firmness were observed for Ec-treated tomato and strawberry-treated with Ec-and Cn-vapours. Oil vapours stimulated levels of total soluble solids during exposure but effects were persistent only for 'cherry' tomatoes following exposure. Fruit samples treated with oil vapours did not differ in percentage weight loss, organic acid content, sweetness and total phenolic content during or following vapour exposure compared with untreated fruit. The results suggest that essential oil vapour may improve fruit quality-related attributes on top of the well-documented antimicrobial protection during fresh produce storage and transit. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Sommige soorten vaste planten en bollen hebben tijdens de bewaring bij de handels-of exportbedrijven of bij de retailer sterk de neiging tot uitlopen en/of uitdroging. Het uitlopen en uitdrogen kan voorkomen of geremd worden door ze te verpakken in een MAP-folie. Deze folie heeft een beperkte doorlaatbaarheid voor zuurstof waardoor, ten gevolge van de ademhaling van het product, het zuurstofgehalte in de verpakking daalt en de groei, en dus uitloop, geremd worden. Het zuurstofgehalte dat ontstaat in de verpakking wordt bepaald door de doorlaatbaarheid van de verpakking én door de ademhalingsactiviteit (afhankelijk van de temperatuur) van het product. Doordat een MAP-folie volledige ondoorlaatbaar is voor water wordt uitdroging voorkomen. Om condensvorming en dus ziekte te voorkomen, moet in combinatie met een MAP-folie een vulmiddel toegepast worden dat het overtollige vocht in de verpakking in voldoende mate kan opnemen en afgeven. Het doel van het onderzoek was om voor verschillende soorten bloembollen en vaste planten die gevoelig zijn voor uitdroging en/of uitlopen, een consumentenverpakking (t.b.v. de retail) en/of ‘bulk’-verpakking (t.b.v. handels- en exportbedrijven) van MAP-folie te ontwikkelen en tevens een vulmiddel te vinden, waarbij het product geen (of een aanvaardbare) spruitgroei vertoont en vochtproblemen (uitdroging of condensvorming) voorkómen worden. Het onderzoek bestond uit 3 onderdelen: I. De bepaling van de ademhalingsactiviteit tijdens een ketensimulatie. Dit was nodig om een MAP-folie met de juiste zuurstofdoorlaatbaarheid te kunnen ontwikkelen. II. M.b.v. de verkregen ademhalingsgegevens zijn door een foliefabrikant MAP-folies ontwikkeld voor de consumentenverpakking (t.b.v. retailer) en de ‘bulk’-verpakking (bewaring bij handels-of exportbedrijf). Een aantal soorten planten/bollen is verpakt in MAP-verpakkingen met verschillende type vulmiddelen en verschillende vochtgehaltes. De planten/bollen zijn gedurende een aantal weken/maanden op het laboratorium bewaard onder ketenomstandigheden. De kwaliteit van planten/bollen uit de MAP- verpakkingen is vergeleken met die van planten/bollen uit praktijkverpakkingen. III. Planten en/of bollen zijn bij bedrijven verpakt in consumenten- of in ‘bulk’-verpakkingen van MAP-folie in combinatie met de vulmiddelen die uit het onderzoek als meest perspectiefvol naar voren kwamen. Na (langdurige) bewaring is de kwaliteit van planten/bollen uit de MAP-verpakkingen vergeleken met die van planten/bollen uit praktijkverpakkingen.

In dit rapport wordt een onderzoek beschreven dat in een praktijkpootgoedbewaarplaats is uitgevoerd om te kijken naar de mogelijkheden van ontsmetting van pootgoed met ozongas. De knollen werden met een hoge concentratie ozon op de band behandeld tijdens het inschuren, met een lage concentratie continu tijdens de bewaarperiode en met een hoge concentratie in combinatie gevolgd door UV-licht tijdens het uitschuren. De werking van ozon is nagegaan op knollen die kunstmatig waren besmetting met Erwinia chrysanthemibacteriën en met Phytophthora- en zilverschurftsporen. Ook is het effect van ozon op de vitaliteit van het pootgoed nagegaan.

Planten en/of bollen zijn bij bedrijven verpakt in consumenten- of in ‘bulk’-verpakkingen van MAP-folie in combinatie met de vulmiddelen die uit het onderzoek als meest perspectiefvol naar voren kwamen. Na (langdurige) bewaring is de kwaliteit van planten/bollen uit de MAP-verpakkingen vergeleken met die van planten/bollen uit praktijkverpakkingen.

In dit rapport wordt een onderzoek beschreven dat in een praktijkpootgoedbewaarplaats is uitgevoerd om te kijken naar de mogelijkheden van ontsmetting van pootgoed met ozongas. De knollen werden met een hoge concentratie ozon op de band behandeld tijdens het inschuren, met een lage concentratie continu tijdens de bewaarperiode en met een hoge concentratie in combinatie gevolgd door UV-licht tijdens het uitschuren. De werking van ozon is nagegaan op knollen die kunstmatig waren besmetting met Erwinia chrysanthemibacteriën en met Phytophthora- en zilverschurftsporen. Ook is het effect van ozon op de vitaliteit van het pootgoed nagegaan.
