Kenikir leaves are one of the traditional medicines used in Indonesia, yet only some studies investigate the compounds tested against them. This study aimed to evaluate Kenikir leaves as mouthwash with organoleptic tests and determine the differences in preferences. This type of research is quasi-experimental. The sample size is 32 people as organoleptic test panelists. The parameters were the color, smell, and taste of Kenikir leaf extract mouthwash material with original, mint, and mixed fruit flavors with a hedonic scale with ethnic groups of Jawa, Flores, Lombok, Bali, and Timor. The study results showed that regarding the color, the panelists preferred the mixed fruit color, with a p = 0.032 (p <0.05). Regarding the smell, the panelists preferred the mixed fruit with p = 0.019 (p <0.05). The panelists preferred the taste of mouthwash ingredients with mint flavor, but the assessment difference was insignificant at p = 0.276 (p> 0.05). Timor people like the product most. Meanwhile, the Flores ethnic group hardly likes all mouthwash products with Kenikir leaf extract. In conclusion, most preferred organoleptic test panelists of mouthwash ingredients are mouthwash ingredients with mixed fruit aroma/smell, color, and mint flavor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study aims to improve the antimicrobial and remineralization-promoting properties of mouthwash by synthesizing novel Ag/ZnO/Oyster Shells nanocomposites and evaluating their anti-caries properties and biosafety in vitro and in vivo, so as to reduce the incidence of caries. The antimicrobial properties of the synthesized Ag/ZnO/Oyster Shell nanocomposites were examined by bacterial inhibition zone, minimum inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal concentration, fluorescence staining and scanning electron microscopy. The potential of the materials to promote remineralization of demineralized enamel was detected by scanning electron microscopy, surface microhardness and depth of hard tissue defects, and laser confocal electron microscopy analysis. The synthesized materials were then incorporated into mouthwash, and their effects on antimicrobial properties, remineralization-promoting properties were evaluated. Furthermore, an oral mucosal contact model was established to assess local irritation and systemic effects. The results showed that the novel Ag/ZnO/Oyster Shell nanocomposites possessed strong antimicrobial activity, remineralization-promoting ability and good biosafety, and the mouthwash containing Ag/ZnO/Oyster Shell possessed strong antimicrobial performance and remineralization-promoting ability, and showed no obvious abnormalities in local mucosal tissues, blood indices, and histopathology of the liver and kidneys in the oral exposure model of the SD rats. These findings indicate that Ag/ZnO/Oyster shell incorporated into mouthwash has strong antimicrobial activity, good remineralization-promoting properties and good biosafety in vivo. Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) affects many patients. Various therapeutic options have been devised to alleviate this condition by achieving dentinal tubules (DT) occlusion. This research aimed to investigate the effects of dipotassium oxalate-containing mouthwash, diode laser and their combination on DT occlusion. Methods: Forty dentin samples were obtained from 20 human single-rooted third molars, 40 dentin specimens were obtained, and exposed DT were created in vitro. They were assigned into four groups: Group 1 (n = 10), the control group where no treatment was applied; Group 2 (n = 10), a mouthwash with a 1.4% dipotassium oxalate was applied twice for 60 s during a 5-day period in a shaker at 100 rpm; Group 3 (n = 10), a combination of the same mouthwash and an 810 nm diode laser at an output power of 0.25 W in continuous mode was applied for 60 s without contact at a distance of 3–4 mm; and Group 4 (n = 10), only a diode laser with the same protocol was applied. Occlusion of the DT was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Results: The analysis revealed occlusion of the DT in all treatment groups; however, the effects were more pronounced in the combined treatment group (Group 3). Compared with the test groups, the control group had significantly more open DT in 100 µm2 (p < 0.01). The difference between the Group 2 and Group 4 was not significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion: DT occlusion was achieved via the use of a mouthwash containing 1.4% dipotassium oxalate and an 810 nm diode laser. Dental plaque provides a proper environment for the growth and activity of bacteria responsible for periodontal diseases and caries. As a result, it should be removed by individuals to prevent periodontal diseases and caries. There are different mechanical and chemical plaque control methods. In one study is shown that dental plaque removal efficacy of dentifrice containing Ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid(EDTA)/Methylsulfonylmethane(MSM) was nearly five times that of commercially available fluoride toothpaste. In another study, authors found that xylitol-containing chewing gums caused a marked reduction in the count of Streptococcus Mutans compared to conventional ones. This difference was highly prominent in individuals with poor oral hygiene. In this study we assessed the synergic effects of Xylitol, EDTA and MSM in a chewing gum in comparison with chlorhexidine mouthwash. This study was a crossover, randomized clinical trial. Twenty-four patients were divided in two groups randomly. At the baseline scaling and root planing was done for each patient. Group1 used chlorhexidine mouthwash twice a day. Group2 used novel chewing gum for 15 min twice a day. After 14 days, for every patient O'leary plaque index, gingival index and sulcus bleeding index were reevaluated and recorded. Professional brushing was done for patients. 14 days were considered as wash-out period. After that, method of plaque control of groups was changed. After 14 days, all patients were reevaluated and recorded and were compared with previous data. Samples in 2 groups had no significant difference in age and sex. Paired sample t test revealed that there were significant differences between first and second period for O'leary plaque index, gingival index and sulcus bleeding index in Group1 (P < 0.05). But in Group2 there were no differences between first and second period for all indexes. Also independent sample t test showed that there were no significant differences between baseline, after first treatment and after second one for all indexes in both groups (P > 0.05). According to regression model results, type of treatment had no effect on mean of all indexes. According to our findings which showed the similar efficiency of novel chewing gum and chlorhexidine mouthwash in improving and reducing plaque and gingival indexes, we can conclude that novel chewing gum can be introduced as an effective, cheap and accessible tool for dental plaque control. Background and purpose: Aphthous and oral ulcers are the most common ulcerative conditions of the oral mucosa, presenting as painful sores on the oral or tongue mucous membranes that make eating and drinking difficult. Zataria multiflora Boiss. has demonstrated therapeutic potential and has been used in formulations such as Protact® mouthwash. Recent studies indicate that this plant possesses several therapeutic effects, including alleviating inflammation and promoting healing in oral, digestive, and skin wounds. Given the documented effectiveness of this plant in treating various types of oral wounds and inflammation, along with the availability of Protact® mouthwash in pharmacies nationwide, this study aims to evaluate patient and physician satisfaction with the efficacy of Protact® mouthwash for treating oral ulcers and aphthous ulcers in Sari and Babol, the two largest cities by population in Mazandaran province. Materials and methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included a sample of 75 individuals, consisting of 35 physicians and 40 patients from Sari and Babol who either prescribed or used Protact® mouthwash. A convenience sampling method was used, with participants selected based on their willingness to complete a checklist. Data were collected by trained interviewers visiting medical centers, physician clinics, and pharmacies, and inviting participants to complete the checklist. Data were presented as mean ± standard deviation (M ± SD), percentages, median, minimum, and maximum values. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-squared, Kolmogorov–Smirnov, and independent t-tests. Results: The majority of participants in both groups were men (patients: 52.5%, or 21 out of 40; physicians: 94.3%, or 33 out of 35). The mean, median, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum ages for physicians were 53.94, 56, 7.6, 40, and 68 years, respectively, while those for patients were 40.13, 42, 10.8, 18, and 63 years, respectively. Most patients in this study (75%) reported a high level of satisfaction after using Protact® mouthwash. This mouthwash was mainly used for the treatment of aphthous stomatitis and oral inflammation, with a frequency of 52.5%. Results from the physicians' checklists showed that Protact® mouthwash was most frequently prescribed by dentists (42.9%), followed by general practitioners, hematologists and oncologists, and radiologists (each with a frequency of 11.4%). Additionally, physicians expressed satisfaction with the healing progress in their patients. Conclusion: The findings support the effectiveness of Protact® mouthwash, a natural product produced in Iran, for the prevention and treatment of oral cavity-related conditions. The efficacy of this product is likely attributed to the presence of major phytochemicals in Zataria multiflora extract and essential oil, including thymol and carvacrol, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and tissueregenerative properties beneficial to mucosal and skin healing. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Azadirachta indica based Herbal mouthwash to treat tooth sensitivity in patients. Method: This single-blinded clinical trial was performed at School of dentistry, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medial University, Islamabad from 1st February, 2023 to 30th April, 2023. In this interventional study incorporated 120 participants with clinically visible signs of erosion, abrasion or recession. Visual Analog Scoring (VAS) Tool was used to investigate tooth sensitivity in these patients. Values of VAS for tooth sensitivity was calculated by exposing teeth of these patients to cold air blasting with triple syringe attached to dental unit at psi-30.0 pressure between 23±30ºC for duration of one second without using Azadirachta indica based Herbal mouthwash. Later on, these patients were provided with this Herbal mouthwash and its usage was recommended twice a day for one month. After One month, tooth sensitivity of patients was determined by VAS again. Data was analyzed by Paired T-test at 95% confidence and significance < 0.05. Results: VAS mean value for tooth sensitivity of patients before using Azadirachta indica based Herbal mouthwash was higher and found to be 55.43% ± 12.04 whereas its mean value after using Herbal mouthwash for one month reduced to 35.38% ± 11.62 which was statistically significant (p value=0.001). Reduction in tooth sensitivity of patients was almost 20.05% just after one month. Conclusion: Azadirachta indica based Herbal mouthwash was potent enough to reduce the tooth sensitivity in patients after one month of its usage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Objective Materials and Methods Results Conclusions Clinical Significance To examine the effects of six whitening mouthwashes on tooth color and immediate bond strength to the enamel.Human incisors were divided into seven groups (n = 10) according to mouthwashes (R.O.C.S Black Edition White, Splat White Plus, Colgate Plax White Charcoal, Signal White Now, Listerine Advanced White, Colgate Optic White, and distilled water). After the initial color measurements, the teeth were exposed to mouthwash for 4 weeks. Then, the color measurements were repeated. Then, cylindrical composite resin blocks were immediately applied to the enamel surfaces and subjected to shear bond strength tests. Data were analyzed using Kruskal‐Wallis and Bonferroni tests (α = 0.05).Δ푏, Δ퐿, and ΔE00 values did not present significant differences among the groups. Significant differences among the groups were determined for Δ푎 and ΔWID values (p < 0.05). R.O.C.S Black Edition White and Splat White Plus produced clinically acceptable color changes. Signal White Now, Splat White Plus, and Listerine Advanced White created acceptable whiteness changes. The mouthwashes did not statistically affect the bond strength compared to the distilled water (p > 0.05).Whitening mouthwash containing blue covarine revealed more acceptable color and whitening changes. Mouthwash containing charcoal led to the lowest enamel bond strength values.The content of whitening mouthwashes affected the degree of tooth whitening and shear bond strength to enamel. Objective: This laboratory study aimed to evaluate the effect of different mouthwash solutions on the surface and mechanical properties of NiTi arch wire. Methods: This experimental study was conducted at the Department of Preventive Dental Sciences, College of Dentistry, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, Saudi Arabia from September 2023 to November 2023. A 30 mm NiTi wires in length with 0.017 × 0.022” in dimensions were selected and equally divided into four groups: Control (G0) group wires were immersed in distilled water (DW); G1 wires were immersed in antiseptic mouthwash; G2 wires were immersed in fluoridated mouthwash; and G3 wires were immersed in therapeutic mouthwash. Surface morphology, nanohardness, and flexural modulus were evaluated at 24-hours, four weeks, and eight weeks’ time points. Data were statistically analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (P<0.05). Results: The arch wires immersed in DW showed insignificant effects on surface roughness, nanohardness, and flexural modulus at different time points. However, all the experimental groups showed a significant effect of time and immersion solutions on the said properties (P<0.05). At the end of eight weeks, G3 showed the highest surface roughness (0.346 ± 0.032 μm) and the lowest nanohardness (1.350 ± 0.412 GPa) and flexural modulus (3.960 ± 0.140 MPa) compared to other study groups. Conclusions: The efficiency of tooth realignment could be influenced by the detrimental influence of fluoride and hydrogen peroxide mouthwash solutions on superelastic NiTi arch wires. Dental caries is a prevalent global health issue, causing tooth damage due to bacterial activity in dental plaque. Despite the availability of fluoridecontaining products, it remains a significant challenge, especially in developing countries. This study aims to develop and test a mouthwash formulation containing sappan wood extract (Caesalpinia sappan L.) as a preventive agent for dental caries. Dental caries is caused by the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria that form plaque on the teeth. Sappan wood is known to contain brasilin which has antimicrobial activity. This study used a laboratory experimental design to test the antibacterial activity of the mouthwash formulation. The main ingredient, secang wood, was obtained from a traditional market in Surabaya, Indonesia. Extraction was carried out by maceration method using 70% ethanol. Formulation of the mouthwash involved a mixture of secang extract with glycerin, sorbitol, ethanol, methyl paraben, flavouring agents, and distilled water. Antibacterial activity was tested using the disc diffusion method on agar media inoculated with Streptococcus mutans. The results showed that secang wood extract effectively inhibited the growth of Streptococcus mutans with a significant inhibition zone. This study also showed that sappan wood extract has antibiofilm activity which is important in the prevention of dental caries. In addition, sappan wood also has antiinflammatory activity that is beneficial in the treatment of periodontal disease. These results support the potential use of sappan wood extract in oral care products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and mouth gel to support dental health and prevent periodontal disease. However, further research is needed to confirm the long-term safety and effectiveness of these formulations through human clinical trials. Aims: Nowadays, oral diseases affect many people and oral mouthwash is commonly used as a preventive measure. However, some chemicals contained in mouthwash are thought to have negative effects with long-term use. Andrographis paniculata (AP) plant is recognized for its antibacterial properties and is known for its usage in herbal medicine. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of AP herbal mouthwash in combating oral pathogens and examining its cytotoxic effects. Methodology and results: The antibacterial activity of AP ethanol extract mouthwash was tested on common oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus and Staphylococcus aureus by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) using the broth dilution technique, followed by determining the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Cytotoxicity analysis was carried out in an in vivo study using a brine shrimp lethality bioassay. The results showed that AP herbal mouthwash at a concentration of 25 mg/mL has the best antibacterial activity and recorded its MIC against S. mutans and S. sobrinus, while S. aureus recorded the MIC at 50 mg/mL. However, the MBC for S. mutans and S. sobrinus were recorded at 100 mg/mL and no MBC was detected for S. aureus. The AP herbal mouthwash in the brine shrimp lethality assay shows LC50 value at a concentration of 3207.98 µg/mL, below the toxicity level. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: Thus, AP herbal mouthwash has been proven to be effective against common oral pathogens. The machining of implants and parts for dental prostheses to eliminate biofilm in the implantoplasty process causes a loss of mechanical properties and also characteristics of the surfaces, making tissue regeneration difficult. In the present work, treatments consisting of elements that can reduce infection, such as citric acid and magnesium, together with elements that can improve cell adhesion and proliferation, such as collagen, are proposed for implant–crown assembly. Titanium, zirconia, composite (PMMA + feldspar) and cobalt–chromium discs were immersed in four different solutions: 25% citric acid, 25% citric acid with the addition of collagen 0.25 g/L, 25% citric acid with the addition of 0.50 g/L and the latter with the addition of 1% Mg (NO3)2. After immersion was applied for 2 and 10 min, the roughness was determined by interferometric microscopy and the contact angle (CA) was evaluated. Human fibroblastic and osteoblastic line cells (HFFs and SaOS-2) were used to determine cell viability and proliferation capacity. Cell binding and cytotoxicity were determined by resazurin sodium salt assay (Alamar Blue) and cell morphology by confocal assay (immunofluorescence F-actin (phalloidin)) after 3 days of incubation. For the evaluation of bacterial activity, the bacterial strains Sptreptococcus gordonii (Gram+) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram−) were used. The antibacterial properties of the proposed treatments were determined by means of the resazurin sodium salt (Alamar Blue) assay after 1 day of incubation. The treatments considerably decreased the contact angle of the treated samples with respect to the control samples. The treatments endowed the surfaces of the samples with a hydrophilic/super-hydrophilic character. The combination of elements proposed for this study provided cell viability greater than 70%; considering the absence of cytotoxicity, it therefore promotes the adhesion and proliferation of fibroblasts and osteoblasts. In addition, it also endows the surface with antibacterial characteristics against from Gram+ and Gram− bacteria without damaging the cells. These results show that this mouthwash can be useful in oral applications to produce a new passivation layer that favors the hydrophilicity of the surface and promotes cellular activity for the formation of fibroblasts and osteoblasts, as well as showing bactericidal activity. Background: A Commiphora myrrha (CM)-based polyherbal mouthwash with enhanced stability and oral bioavailability was developed using a high-energy homogenization method. Methodology: The formulations primarily consist of herbal extracts from CM, ginger, and white tea, optimized based on various parameters, including organoleptic properties, pH, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), and Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR- FTIR). Stability studies were also conducted on each formulation. Results and Discussion: The particle sizes ranged from 77 to 216 nm, with zeta potential values between -0.92 and -2.09 ± 0.38 mV, indicating stability. ATR- FTIR studies confirmed no interaction between the ingredients. Antioxidant activity was significant, with IC50 values for pure extracts of CM, white tea, and ginger being 0.071 ± 0.003, 0.073 ± 0.004, and 0.066 ± 0.004 mg/ml, respectively. For formulations M1 and M2, IC50 values were 1.030 ± 0.901 and 0.495 ± 0.496 mg/ml, respectively, showing a concentration-dependent increase in antioxidant activity. The MTT cytotoxicity assay showed high cell viability for M1 (96.1%) and M2 (133.3%) at 0.002 mg/ml, suggesting low cytotoxicity, though variability in results indicated further assay optimization. High standard deviations, 0.06 and 0.208, indicated limitations in experimental conditions emphasizing the need for improved assay parameters for accuracy. Conclusion: The mouthwash formulations, M1 and M2 Show promise, with future work focusing on increasing CM concentration and refining cytotoxicity testing methods to ensure reliable data for subsequent antibacterial and in vivo studies.

Given the documented effectiveness of this plant in treating various types of oral wounds and inflammation, along with the availability of Protact® mouthwash in pharmacies nationwide, this study aims to evaluate patient and physician satisfaction with the efficacy of Protact® mouthwash for treating oral ulcers and aphthous ulcers in Sari and Babol, the two largest cities by population in Mazandaran province. Materials and methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included a sample of 75 individuals, consisting of 35 physicians and 40 patients from Sari and Babol who either prescribed or used Protact® mouthwash. A convenience sampling method was used, with participants selected based on their willingness to complete a checklist. Data were collected by trained interviewers visiting medical centers, physician clinics, and pharmacies, and inviting participants to complete the checklist. Data were presented as mean ± standard deviation (M ± SD), percentages, median, minimum, and maximum values. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-squared, Kolmogorov–Smirnov, and independent t-tests. Results: The majority of participants in both groups were men (patients: 52.5%, or 21 out of 40; physicians: 94.3%, or 33 out of 35). The mean, median, standard deviation, minimum, and maximum ages for physicians were 53.94, 56, 7.6, 40, and 68 years, respectively, while those for patients were 40.13, 42, 10.8, 18, and 63 years, respectively. Most patients in this study (75%) reported a high level of satisfaction after using Protact® mouthwash. This mouthwash was mainly used for the treatment of aphthous stomatitis and oral inflammation, with a frequency of 52.5%. Results from the physicians' checklists showed that Protact® mouthwash was most frequently prescribed by dentists (42.9%), followed by general practitioners, hematologists and oncologists, and radiologists (each with a frequency of 11.4%). Additionally, physicians expressed satisfaction with the healing progress in their patients. Conclusion: The findings support the effectiveness of Protact® mouthwash, a natural product produced in Iran, for the prevention and treatment of oral cavity-related conditions. The efficacy of this product is likely attributed to the presence of major phytochemicals in Zataria multiflora extract and essential oil, including thymol and carvacrol, which possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and tissue-regenerative properties beneficial to mucosal and skin healing.

The machining of implants and parts for dental prostheses to eliminate biofilm in the implantoplasty process causes a loss of mechanical properties and also characteristics of the surfaces, making tissue regeneration difficult. In the present work, treatments consisting of elements that can reduce infection, such as citric acid and magnesium, together with elements that can improve cell adhesion and proliferation, such as collagen, are proposed for implant–crown assembly. Titanium, zirconia, composite (PMMA + feldspar) and cobalt–chromium discs were immersed in four different solutions: 25% citric acid, 25% citric acid with the addition of collagen 0.25 g/L, 25% citric acid with the addition of 0.50 g/L and the latter with the addition of 1% Mg (NO3)2. After immersion was applied for 2 and 10 min, the roughness was determined by interferometric microscopy and the contact angle (CA) was evaluated. Human fibroblastic and osteoblastic line cells (HFFs and SaOS-2) were used to determine cell viability and proliferation capacity. Cell binding and cytotoxicity were determined by resazurin sodium salt assay (Alamar Blue) and cell morphology by confocal assay (immunofluorescence F-actin (phalloidin)) after 3 days of incubation. For the evaluation of bacterial activity, the bacterial strains Sptreptococcus gordonii (Gram+) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram−) were used. The antibacterial properties of the proposed treatments were determined by means of the resazurin sodium salt (Alamar Blue) assay after 1 day of incubation. The treatments considerably decreased the contact angle of the treated samples with respect to the control samples. The treatments endowed the surfaces of the samples with a hydrophilic/super-hydrophilic character. The combination of elements proposed for this study provided cell viability greater than 70%; considering the absence of cytotoxicity, it therefore promotes the adhesion and proliferation of fibroblasts and osteoblasts. In addition, it also endows the surface with antibacterial characteristics against from Gram+ and Gram− bacteria without damaging the cells. These results show that this mouthwash can be useful in oral applications to produce a new passivation layer that favors the hydrophilicity of the surface and promotes cellular activity for the formation of fibroblasts and osteoblasts, as well as showing bactericidal activity.

Introduction: The aerosols produced by an ultrasonic scaler contain bacteria that may enter the respiratory systems of both dental surgeons and patients. Lemongrass oil is one of the essential oils with enormous antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. Aim: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of commercially available preprocedural mouth rinses, containing 0.2% lemongrass oil mouthwash and a 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate solution, in reducing the levels of viable bacteria in aerosols. Materials and Methods: This single-centre double-blinded randomised controlled parallel design split-mouth clinical trial was planned among patients in the Department of Periodontics attending Vishnu Dental College and Hospital in Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh, India. The study was conducted for 40 days, from August 2022 to October 2022. Two distinct types of preprocedural mouth rinses (lemongrass oil and chlorhexidine) were used on 56 participants with Stage II or III and Grade B periodontitis. A total of 56 subjects were randomly assigned to two groups: Group A (0.2% lemongrass oil) and Group B (0.2% chlorhexidine), using a simple coin toss method. Colony-forming units (CFUs) with and without rinsing in each group were assessed and studied. CFUs collected on blood agar plates were counted during ultrasonic scaling both with and without rinsing. International Business Machine (IBM) Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0 was used for data analysis. Paired t-tests and independent t-tests were used for intragroup and intergroup comparisons for both groups. Results: The mean CFU count in the chlorhexidine group without rinsing was 259.6±26.6, and with rinsing, it was 140.7±22.6, which was statistically significant (p-value < 0.001). Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to assess the cytotoxic effects of an extract from Pelargonium graveolens leaves and green-synthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in a mouthwash when used as a substitute for commercial mouthwashes. Human dermal fibroblasts from neonates (HDFn) were used in this study that done in vitro, because their characteristics were nearly identical to those of human gingival fibroblasts. Method: In this study, the green synthesis of AuNPs using extracts from P. graveolens leaves was investigated as a sustainable and economical method. Then, using a range of analytical techniques, the physicochemical properties were evaluated, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolet visible absorption spectroscopy (UV–Vis), so the preparations and analytical techniques of P. graveolens gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) take little time is about 10 days. The current study used the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide Mosmann's Tetrazolium Toxicity (MTT) to study the cytotoxic effects of P. graveolens leaf extract with P. graveolens gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) utilizing a human fibroblast-derived standard cell line. Results: Various doses (1000, 500, 250, 100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, and 3.125 μg/mL) of P. graveolens AuNPs were used to assess cytotoxicity, demonstrating little cytotoxic effects (approximately below 20% toxicity). A high level of biocompatibility was observed between the P. graveolens AuNPs and normal human fibroblasts. Conclusion: The mouthwash made using green synthetic AuNPs obtained from P. graveolens leaf extract show high level of biocompatibility and has low cytotoxicity. Therefore, herbal mouthwash formulations can serve as a viable substitute for chemical mouthwashes.

The practice of using mouthwash has become increasingly common as people have become more aware of the importance of oral hygiene in preventing dental issues. In order to mitigate any potential risks associated with alcohol-based mouthwashes, researchers are exploring natural sources of anti-cariogenic compounds. This study aimed to assess the effectivity of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract as an ingredient in mouthwash formulations, as the use of Averrhoa bilimbi leaves is still limited. The evaluation of the mouthwash included a thorough examination of its antibacterial activity, viscosity, density, pH, and organoleptic qualities. The results indicated that formula with 30 grams extract (F3) was the most effective, exhibiting more robust antibacterial properties, appropriate viscosity and density, and a pH level similar to that of a solution. F3 resulted in an effectiveness of 41.67%, 1.36 cPs for viscosity, 1.0785 mg/l for density, pH of 5.25+0.006, organoleptically liquid, mint odor, and blackish brown clear color. Based on these findings, it appears that Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract could be a promising ingredient in mouthwash formulations.

Background and Objective: Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) extract has antimicrobial and antioxidant potential. The objective was to assess and compare the salivary Streptococcus mutans counts on Mitis Salivarius Bacterium agar plates after 1 h of mouth rinsing with 30 mL solutions containing S. aromaticum and 0.2% chlorhexidine among 18–30-year-old adults in a clinical setting. Methodology: Sixteen participants fulfilling the eligibility criteria were randomized into two groups. Group A: rinsed with 0.16% S. aromaticum extract mouth rinse and Group B: rinsed with 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash. Saliva samples of the participants were collected before and 1 h after mouth rinsing with 30 mL of interventional mouth rinse, for S. mutans count analysis. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows version 20 (IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y., USA) was used for statistical analysis. The significance level was fixed at P < 0.05. Intra and Intergroup comparison of microbial counts was done using the Wilcoxon signed–rank test and Mann–Whitney U-test, respectively. Results: The results of the study showed that there was a significant reduction in salivary S. mutans counts in both the groups postmouth rinsing with interventional solutions (P < 0.05). However, the intergroup comparison revealed that, in the chlorhexidine group, there was significantly more reduction in salivary S. mutans counts compared to S. aromaticum mouth rinsing group (P = 0.02). Conclusion: There was a reduction in salivary S. mutans counts after mouth rinsing with a solution containing S. aromaticum. Hence, clove mouth rinse could be an effective aid for the prevention and control of dental caries since it is safe and culturally acceptable.

Introduction: Essential herbs such as garlic, ginger, and cardamom have shown antimicrobial activity with no potential adverse effects and are cost-effective. Despite these advantages, the efficacy of these agents needs to be tested against common oral pathogenic microorganisms to ensure that if found effective, they can be used in clinical settings. Aim: To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of garlic, ginger, and cardamom oils on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) against chlorhexidine. Materials and Methods: An in-vitro study was conducted at Bharati Vidyapeeth Dental College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai, in the Department of Microbiology and Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Pharmacy, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India from January 2023 to September 2023. Oil extracts of garlic, ginger, and cardamom were loaded onto sterile filter paper discs measuring 6 mm in diameter in concentrations of 50 μL, 100 μL, and 200 μL. Additionally, 2% chlorhexidine (control group) was loaded onto similar sterile paper discs. The discs were dried and placed aseptically on culture media plates inoculated with S. mutans, and the plates were then incubated at 37°C overnight. Subsequently, the zones of inhibition were measured in millimeters. Results: Ginger oil exhibited the highest zone of inhibition, measuring 25 mm, followed by cardamom oil and garlic oil measuring 18 mm and 12 mm, respectively, at a concentration of 200 μL. The zone of inhibition measured for 100 μL concentrations of garlic, ginger, and cardamom oils were 7 mm, 16 mm, and 13 mm, respectively. For 50 μL concentrations of the oils, the zones of inhibition for garlic, ginger, and cardamom were 0 mm, 13 mm, and 9 mm, respectively. The zone of inhibition shown by chlorhexidine was 22 mm for concentrations of 50 μL, 100 μL, and 200 μL. Conclusion: Essential oil extracts from ginger, cardamom, and garlic were found to have antimicrobial activity against S. mutans, with ginger oil showing the highest effectiveness, followed by cardamom oil and garlic oil.

Background/purpose: Helicobacter pylori has been found to be related to periodontitis, and the oral cavity has been considered a reservoir for H. pylori gastritis infection. Thus, this study evaluated the effect of mouthwash containing poly l-Lysine and glycerol monolaurate on inhibiting H. pylori growth, biofilm formation, cell cytotoxicity, adhesion ability, cagA mRNA expression, and pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulated by H. pylori. Materials and methods: Nineteen H. pylori strains were isolated from the oral cavity. The effectiveness of mouthwash containing poly l-Lysine and glycerol monolaurate was examined for its ability to inhibit H. pylori growth and biofilm formation and was tested for cell viability in oral epithelial cells (H357), gastric adenocarcinoma cells (AGS), and periodontal ligament cells (PDL). Additionally, the mouthwash was tested for reducing cagA mRNA expression, adhesion ability to H357 and AGS cells, and pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulated with H. pylori in AGS and PDL cells. Results: The mouthwash containing poly l-Lysine and glycerol monolaurate could eradicate the biofilm by 14.9–19.9% after incubation at 5 min, and cell viability revealed 77.2, 79.8, and 100.0% for AGS, H357, and PDL cells, respectively. Moreover, the mouthwash containing poly l-Lysine and glycerol monolaurate could down-regulate cagA mRNA expression, reduce adhesion of H. pylori by approximately 9.5–47.8% for H357 cells and 24.5–62.9% for AGS cells, and decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially interleukin-8, stimulated with H. pylori. Conclusion: Mouthwash containing poly l-Lysine and glycerol monolaurate could inhibit H. pylori growth and reduce their virulence expression. The mouthwash also revealed low cytotoxicity to oral and gastric cells.

Objectives Good oral hygiene measures are important for successful orthodontic treatment. They involve various types of mouthwashes which have been reported to cause alteration of mechanical properties of archwires. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a new kind of chlorine-dioxide-containing mouthwash on the mechanical properties and surface morphology of stainless steel orthodontic archwires against the already prevalent chlorhexidine mouthwash in the market. Method Group A – Chlorhexidine mouthwash 0.2% (study), Group B – Chlorine Dioxide mouthwash (study), and Group C – Artificial Saliva (control). 42 specimens of 5 cm long 19x25 inch SS archwires were immersed in each group equally. Post immersion, the frictional force was analyzed in the universal testing machine for each group using custom-made acrylic jigs for 10 specimens. The remaining 4 specimens from each group were sent for surface morphology evaluation using an atomic force microscope. Results Friction resistance evaluation for the archwires revealed a mean friction of 0.011 ± 0.0056 in Group A, 0.015 ± 0.0052 in Group B, and 0.010 ± 0.0067 in Group C. Results suggested that the static friction of Group C (control group) was found to be the least when compared with the experimental groups, although not producing statistically significant values. Surface roughness of archwires compared at a 10μm range revealed a mean roughness of 19.38 ± 0.82 in Group A, 25.39 ± 7.01 in Group B, and 16.65 ± 3.07 in Group C which shows there wasn’t any statistically significant difference in the mean roughness midst the three sets. Conclusion Chlorine dioxide and Chlorhexidine mouthwashes caused an increase in the frictional resistance of the archwires when compared to the control group. This increase was statistically insignificant. When measured at a range of 10μm the mean surface roughness did not statistically differ across the control and the experimental groups.

Background Removal of the microbial deposits (plaque and calculus) by performing effective scaling and root planing (SRP) is the fundamental step for managing periodontal disease (gingivitis and periodontitis). Various adjuncts in the form of mouthwash, gels, and toothpaste are also being used as adjuncts to SRP for managing periodontitis. Recently, Lycium barbarum ( L. barbarum), commonly known as goji berry or wolfberry, has gained popularity for managing chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases. However, its efficacy in managing periodontitis has never been explored. Hence the present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of goji berry mouthwash compared to chlorhexidine mouthwash for managing periodontitis. Methods 60 adult participants were divided randomly using computer-generated random sequences into two groups (case group: L. barbarum mouthwash (Males: 16; Female: 14); control group: 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash (Males: 14; Females: 16)). The changes in the gingival index (Gi), plaque index (Pi), bleeding on probing (BOP), clinical attachment loss (CAL), probing pocket depth (PPD), microbial load, and antioxidant levels (protein thiol) in saliva were noted at the baseline, at 15 days and one month. Results A significant reduction in the mean PPD, Pi, BOP, and Gi was seen from baseline to one month in both the control (P-value=0.006, 0.027, 0.000, and 0.036 respectively) and test groups (P-value=0.035, 0.000, 0.034, and 0.000 respectively). However, the antioxidant levels (protein thiol) in saliva were significantly increased only in the test group. Conclusion Goji berry mouthwash along with SRP reduced the Gi, Pi, BOP, and PPD in patients with periodontitis. However, no statistically significant difference was noted between the use of goji berry and chlorhexidine mouthwash. Goji berry mouthwash was more effective than chlorhexidine in increasing the antioxidant levels in saliva.

Aim: The study aimed to examine the efficacy of neem, tea and chlorhexidine mouth washes in the reduction of plaque and periodontal inflammation. Methods: This study was conducted in the department of Public Health Dentistry, Dental College, Hospital and Research Centre, India. The study included 60 adult patients fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria were randomly divided into three groups. In Group A 0.12% Chlorhexidine Mouthwash, in Group B – 5% Neem Mouthwash and in Group C- 10% Tea mouthwash was given to the patients. Plaque index, gingival index and Periodontal pocket depth was measured before starting and after competition of study. Any side effect experienced by the patients was also recorded at the end of study period. Result: plaque Index, Gingival Index and Periodontal pocket depth significantly decreases during the study (P<0.05) in all the groups. However the indices values showed non-significant differences between groups at baseline and after completion of study. Significantly more percentage of patients finds the taste of white tea palatable in comparison to other mouthwashes. No major side effects was seen during the study. Conclusion: Daily mouth rinsing using tea and neem mouthwash had beneficial effects on periodontal disease. Oral cavity and larynx cancers are generally associated with tobacco consumption, alcohol abuse or both. Mouthwashes are liquid antiseptic solutions that decrease the microbial load in the oral cavity. Alcohol is often used in mouthwashes for its antiseptic functions and as a carrier for some active ingredients, including menthol or thymol, helping them penetrate the plaque. There is some evidence for alcohol-containing mouthwash use which is associated with the potential risk of developing carcinoma of oral cavity. The results are inconclusive, as actual mouthwash use patterns may be inconsistent and cannot be easily quantified. Based on the available data, there is no sufficient evidence to accept the proposition that the use of mouthwashes containing alcohol can influence the development of oral cancer. Sutures are natural or synthetic biomaterials utilized to hold tissues together. Following oral surgery, the surgical site and sutures are physically affected by many different factors. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of artificial saliva (AS) and chlorhexidine mouthwash on the tensile strength of absorbable multifilament PGLA (polyglycolide-co-l-lactide) and non-absorbable multifilament silk sutures. PGLA and silk sutures, which are commonly used in oral surgery, were used to evaluate the change in strength of the sutures. A total of 352 suture samples were divided into eight equal groups (n = 44) and used for the experiments. Tensile strength was tested on days 0, 3, 7, and 14. For the silk sutures, there was a significant decrease in tensile strength in all groups at time T3 compared to T0, T1, and T2, and at times T1 and T2 compared to T0. For PGLA sutures, there was a significant decrease in all groups at time T3 compared to T0, T1, and T2. This study shows that chlorhexidine mouthwash significantly reduces suture resistance for 14 days after surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oral candidiasis is an opportunistic infection caused by fungi of the genus Candida. Nystatin, fluconazole, and miconazole are the most widely used antifungal drugs in dentistry, but in recent years, they have been shown to be less effective due to the increase in the resistance to antifungal drugs. The growing challenge of antifungal resistance emphasizes the importance of exploring not only alternative strategies in the fight against Candida spp. infections but also supportive treatment for pharmacological treatment for oral candidiasis. This review aims to evaluate and compare the in vitro reports on antifungal efficacy against Candida spp. exhibited by mouthwashes distributed on the European market. The research question was elaborated through the PEO framework recommended by PRISMA 2020. A bibliographic search strategy was developed for the scientific online databases Pubmed and ScienceDirect. According to the eligibility criteria, 21 papers were included in this study over a 27-year period. Mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine digluconate, cetylpyridinium chloride, hexetidine, and fluorine compounds among others, and natural antimicrobials, such as menthol, thymol, eucalyptol, and Glycyrrhiza glabra extracts, have demonstrated antifungal effectiveness. Nonetheless, the methodological variance introduces ambiguity concerning the comparative efficacy of distinct molecules or mouthwash formulations and complicates the evaluation and the comparison of results between studies. Plant-derived biosurfactants are widely used due to their emulsifying and surface-active properties and can be applied in various products. The aim of this present study was to develop a mouthwash using chitosan hydrochloride and saponins extracted from the plants Chenopodium quinoa and Glycine max. After extraction of the biosurfactants using the Soxhlet method, they were characterized with the aid of infrared spectroscopy and subjected to determination of critical micelle concentration, which was found to be 4.0 and 3.5 g/L for C. quinoa and G. max, respectively. The stability of the emulsions was investigated in the presence of different oils and at different values of temperature, pH, and salinity, which showed an emulsification index greater than 40% under all conditions analyzed. After obtaining the mouthwash formulation, tests of foaming capacity, pH, and genotoxicity were performed in cells of onion (Allium cepa) roots. No presence of micronuclei was found in the roots exposed to the formulation, which indicates that there was no aggression to the cells. The results of antimicrobial susceptibility tests revealed bacteriostatic/bactericidal activity as well as antibiofilm activity of formulations against the microorganisms tested. In conclusion, the biosurfactants present in extracts from C. quinoa and G. max were found to be stable, non-toxic molecules with antimicrobial activity, with potential to replace toxic emulsifying agents commonly used in commercial products. This study investigated the antimicrobial activity of surface pre-reacted glass ionomer eluate (S-PRG) against oral microcosm biofilms collected from the oral cavity of patients. Dental biofilm samples were collected from three volunteers to form microcosm biofilms in vitro. Initially, screening tests were carried out to determine the biofilm treatment conditions with S-PRG eluate. The effects of a daily treatment for 5 min using three microcosm biofilms from different patients was then evaluated. For this, biofilms were formed on tooth enamel specimens for 120 h. Biofilms treated with 100% S-PRG for 5 min per day for 5 days showed a reduction in the number of total microorganisms, streptococci and mutans streptococci. SEM images confirmed a reduction in the biofilm after treatment. Furthermore, S-PRG also reduced lactic acid production. It was concluded that S-PRG eluate reduced the microbial load and lactic acid production in oral microcosm biofilms, reinforcing its promising use as a mouthwash agent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Antiseptic mouthwashes are useful adjuncts to daily brushing and flossing for the control of dental plaque and gingivitis. The objective of the present study was to compare the effect of three mouthwashes: chlorhexidine, essential oils and cetylpyridinium chloride on oral health‐related quality of life, gingival health, tongue coating and also to compare their potential side effects after 2‐week consumption. Methods: Sixty participants were enrolled in this study and were divided into four groups (three mouthwash groups plus no mouthwash group). At the beginning, scaling and cleaning were performed and the following parameters were recorded: oral health impact profile (OHIP‐5) questionnaire, tongue coating index, modified gingival index, calculus surface index, modified Lobene stain index and a questionnaire for side effects. Each group has followed up in 2 weeks. Data were analysed using paired t‐test, ANOVA, Fisher's exact test and Pearson chi‐square. Results: At the end of second week, all three mouthwashes significantly improved OHIP‐5 score and reduced modified gingival index whereas essential oils and cetylpyridinium chloride significantly reduced tongue coating index when compared to control group (p < 0.05). The differences between four groups were significant for calculus formation, dental staining and reported burning sensation and changes of taste sensation and perception (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The use of all three mouthwashes has been effective in controlling and reducing gingivitis and tongue coating; however, it appeared that essential oils has the minimum and Chlorhexidine has the maximum side effects. Moreover, the use of all three mouthwashes has been examined to improve the quality of life. Overall, essential oils mouthwash has the best performance among these three mouthwashes. Objectives: This study was conducted in order to determine the effect on halitosis and the antibacterial effect against halitosis‐causing bacteria of the mouthwash made of the natural material, Glycyrrhiza uralensis (G. uralensis) extract. Materials and Methods: A randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study was conducted on 60 patients who visited M dental clinic located in Busan, South Korea, excluding those with systemic disease that may induce halitosis. There were 30 patients classified to the saline gargle group and the remaining 30 patients were classified to the G. uralensis extract gargle group. In addition, their level of halitosis and halitosis‐causing bacteria were measured. They visited the dental clinic on a fasted state at baseline before gargle application (Baseline), immediately after gargle application (Treatment) and 5 days after gargle application (After 5 Days). For clinical indicators, participants were tested for halitosis and bacteria immediately after waking up without brushing their teeth and without hydration. Results: The prevalence of halitosis decreased in the G. uralensis extract gargle group compared to the saline gargle group at Treatment and After 5 Days. In cases with pseudo halitosis, there was a significant decrease in halitosis‐causing bacteria when G. uralensis extract gargle was applied (p < 0.05). Conclusions: It was identified that using a mouthwash made with G. uralensis extract is effective for halitosis improvement and reduction of halitosis‐causing bacteria. Sodium fluoride (NaF) is a fluoride application recommended by the World Health Organization for its efficacy and safety in preventing dental caries. Gingival fibroblasts that constitute the majority of connective tissue cells play a major role in wound healing via the expression of growth factors, including fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). This study examined the effect of NaF mouthwash on FGF-2 and TGF-β expression in human gingival fibroblasts (HGnFs). Fibroblasts were exposed to a medium with 225 ppmF NaF for 1 min, then switched to either 15 ppmF NaF for continuous stimulation or no NaF for transient stimulation. Continuous NaF stimulation significantly increased the gene and protein expression of FGF-2 and TGF-β in HGnFs compared to controls, suggesting NaF's potential role in modulating periodontal tissue wound healing. Signaling pathway investigations showed the involvement of heterotrimeric GTP-binding proteins, calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII), and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation. Inhibiting CaMKII reduced NaF-induced FGF-2 and TGF-β expression, while ERK phosphorylation increased after NaF stimulation. These results highlight NaF mouthwash's potential in promoting wound healing in extraction sockets, particularly during the mixed dentition period. Introduction: Essential herbs such as garlic, ginger, and cardamom have shown antimicrobial activity with no potential adverse effects and are cost-effective. Despite these advantages, the efficacy of these agents needs to be tested against common oral pathogenic microorganisms to ensure that if found effective, they can be used in clinical settings. Aim: To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of garlic, ginger, and cardamom oils on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) against chlorhexidine. Materials and Methods: An in-vitro study was conducted at Bharati Vidyapeeth Dental College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai, in the Department of Microbiology and Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Pharmacy, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India from January 2023 to September 2023. Oil extracts of garlic, ginger, and cardamom were loaded onto sterile filter paper discs measuring 6 mm in diameter in concentrations of 50 µL, 100 µL, and 200 µL. Additionally, 2% chlorhexidine (control group) was loaded onto similar sterile paper discs. The discs were dried and placed aseptically on culture media plates inoculated with S. mutans, and the plates were then incubated at 37°C overnight. Subsequently, the zones of inhibition were measured in millimeters. Results: Ginger oil exhibited the highest zone of inhibition, measuring 25 mm, followed by cardamom oil and garlic oil measuring 18 mm and 12 mm, respectively, at a concentration of 200 µL. The zone of inhibition measured for 100 µL concentrations of garlic, ginger, and cardamom oils were 7 mm, 16 mm, and 13 mm, respectively. For 50 µL concentrations of the oils, the zones of inhibition for garlic, ginger, and cardamom were 0 mm, 13 mm, and 9 mm, respectively. The zone of inhibition shown by chlorhexidine was 22 mm for concentrations of 50 µL, 100 µL, and 200 µL. Conclusion: Essential oil extracts from ginger, cardamom, and garlic were found to have antimicrobial activity against S. mutans, with ginger oil showing the highest effectiveness, followed by cardamom oil and garlic oil. In this prospective pilot study, 84 patients with a history of poor oral hygiene were enrolled in an open-label, interventional, randomized controlled clinical trial. The aim was to provide preliminary clinical data on a new line of oral hygiene products containing a prebiotic and a paraprobiotic based on Lactobacillus plantarum. The recruitment rate and patient satisfaction were analyzed to estimate resources for the future primary study, and descriptive data on rebalancing of the oral microbiota were collected. The population was divided into 5 groups based on the products assigned to the patients: 1, delicate mint toothpaste (n = 20); 2, mint toothpaste (n = 12); 3, mint mouthwash (n = 20); 4, delicate mint toothpaste, mint mouthwash, and an antimicrobial toothbrush (n = 20): and 5, continued use of their usual oral care products and routine (control group; n = 12). The study duration was 28 days. All patients tolerated the products well, and there were no adverse events. The recruitment capability and procedures allowed for a realistic estimation for the future main trial. The products did not cause any changes in tooth color. The participants in group 4, who completed the treatment consisting of delicate mint toothpaste, mint mouthwash, and an antimicrobial toothbrush, reported the greatest reduction in gingival sensitivity (P ≤ 0.000; Wilcoxon signed rank test). Analysis with the Wilcoxon signed rank test revealed that all products induced a statistically significant decrease in plague (P ≤ 0.002) and a reduction in gingival sensitivity (delicate mint toothpaste, P ≤ 0.005; mint toothpaste, P ≤ 0.015; and mint mouthwash, P 5 0.015). All products were effective in stabilizing the oral microbiota. The tested products showed an optimal safety profile and a statistically significant efficacy in reducing gingival sensitivity and plague. They also stabilized the biodiversity of the oral microbiota, making it less susceptible to microbial fluctuations than the control group. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05999175). Helicobacter pylori has been found to be related to periodontitis, and the oral cavity has been considered a reservoir for H. pylori gastritis infection. Thus, this study evaluated the effect of mouthwash containing poly l -Lysine and glycerol monolaurate on inhibiting H. pylori growth, biofilm formation, cell cytotoxicity, adhesion ability, cag A mRNA expression, and pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulated by H. pylori. Nineteen H. pylori strains were isolated from the oral cavity. The effectiveness of mouthwash containing poly l -Lysine and glycerol monolaurate was examined for its ability to inhibit H. pylori growth and biofilm formation and was tested for cell viability in oral epithelial cells (H357), gastric adenocarcinoma cells (AGS), and periodontal ligament cells (PDL). Additionally, the mouthwash was tested for reducing cag A mRNA expression, adhesion ability to H357 and AGS cells, and pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulated with H. pylori in AGS and PDL cells. The mouthwash containing poly l -Lysine and glycerol monolaurate could eradicate the biofilm by 14.9–19.9% after incubation at 5 min, and cell viability revealed 77.2, 79.8, and 100.0% for AGS, H357, and PDL cells, respectively. Moreover, the mouthwash containing poly l -Lysine and glycerol monolaurate could down-regulate cag A mRNA expression, reduce adhesion of H. pylori by approximately 9.5–47.8% for H357 cells and 24.5–62.9% for AGS cells, and decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially interleukin-8, stimulated with H. pylori. Mouthwash containing poly l -Lysine and glycerol monolaurate could inhibit H. pylori growth and reduce their virulence expression. Corrosion of dental implants is one of the most critical factors in the failure of implant treatments. Generally, corrosion depends on the type of material used in implants and the chemical composition of the oral environment. Due to the antibacterial activities, mouthwashes and chlorhexidine gels are often used after implant surgery. Ti6Al4V is commonly used in manufacturing dental implants. The present study aims to investigate the corrosion behavior of the Ti6Al4V alloy under different concentrations of chlorhexidine (0.12%, 0.2%,and 2%) during 2‐ and 24‐h immersion. This way corrosion may be minimized while obtaining an antibacterial environment around the implant. In this regard, the electrochemical behavior of the specimens was investigated using polarization and impedance tests, and then their morphology, cross‐section and nano‐tribological behavior were evaluated using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy, and nano‐scratch test. The results show that using chlorhexidine solution with a concentration of 0.12% could yield a lower corrosion rate and material loss after implant surgery. Abstract Introduction The control of peri-implant biofilm plays a crucial role in the long-term success of dental implants. Topical treatment alternatives aimed at reducing or preventing biofilm accumulation around the implant's prosthetic components are critical for the success of the treatment. Objective The present study has clinically evaluated the effects of an oxygen-releasing mouthwash (BlueM®) over a 90-day period, following implant placement surgery. Material and method Inclusion and exclusion criteria allowed for the selection of participants who, after implant placement, were randomized into two groups: the control group, which used a 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash, and the BlueM group, which received the oxygen-releasing BlueM mouthwash. All participants were instructed to rinse twice daily for the first 10 days and once a day up to 30 days post-surgery. Clinical parameters were evaluated, including the visible plaque index (VP), marginal bleeding (MB), presence of calculus (PC), suppuration (SUP), mucositis (MU), and the extent of keratinized gingiva (KG). These data were collected at the time of suture removal (baseline). At 90 days postoperative, in addition to the aforementioned parameters, probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and the presence of peri-implantitis (PI) were evaluated. Result Nine patients were included in this study, with a total of 38 implants. The BlueM group demonstrated a reduction in MB and an even greater reduction in VP. The other assessed parameters showed similar results to those in the control group. Conclusion BlueM mouthwash has clinical benefits for biofilm control and gingival inflammation reduction.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of a mouthwash containing Lespedeza cuneata extract (LCE) on halitosis as an alternative to chemical mouthwashes. The effect of this natural mouthwash on halitosis-causing bacteria (HCB) was clinically evaluated. Materials and Methods: A total of 84 subjects among 103 participants were recruited from the M Dental Clinic (Busan, South Korea) in this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The participants were divided into two groups: 41 in the saline-gargle group (saline group) and 43 in the LCE-gargle group (LCE group). A week before the experiment, scaling and oral health education were conducted to standardise the subjects' oral condition. For clinical evaluation, halitosis and HCB were evaluated pre-gargle (baseline), immediately after gargling (treatment), and 5 days after gargling (5 days post-treatment). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS for Windows. Results: The level of subjective improvement was statistically significantly greater in the LCE group than the saline group (p < 0.05). Compared with the saline group, the LCE group showed reduced halitosis after 5 days of application. Furthermore, halitosis statistically significantly decreased over time (p < 0.05). Moreover, the LCE group showed a statistically significant decrease in the number of all six HCBs (p < 0.05). Conclusion: LCE gargle was effective in reducing halitosis both subjectively and objectively, suggesting an antibacterial effect on HCBs in the oral cavity. Thus, LCE, which can be used as a safe mouthwash ingredient, can promote oral health and will be valuable for the oral healthcare product industry. Purpose: The present study assessed the efficacy of 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) and Salvadora persica-based mouthwashes (SPM) in reducing oral Candida carriage (OCC) and periodontal inflammation in cigarette smokers and non-smokers after non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT). Materials and Methods: Self-reported cigarette smokers and non-smokers with periodontal inflammation as well as nonsmokers with a healthy periodontal status were included. NSPT was performed in all participants. Based on the type of mouthwash, participants were randomly divided into three groups as follows: group 1: CHX; group 2: SPM; and group 3: distilled water (ddH2O) with mint flavour (control group). Clinical attachment loss (CAL), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), and marginal bone loss (MBL) were measured. Clinical periodontal parameters were re-assessed at a 6-week follow-up. Oral yeast samples were collected and identified using a concentrated oral-rinse culture technique and PCR, respectively. Clinical and laboratory-based investigations were done at baseline and after six weeks. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: At baseline, PI, MBL, PD and CAL were comparable in all participants. None of the patients had periodontitis at baseline. Post-operatively, CHX and SPM were more effective in reducing PI (p < 0.01), GI (p < 0.01) and PD (p < 0.01) in nonsmokers than in the control group. The OCC was statistically significantly higher among smokers compared with nonsmokers at baseline. At the 6-month follow-up, CHX was more effective than SPM in reducing OCC in non-smokers (p < 0.01). At the 6-week follow-up, there was no difference in OCC among cigarette smokers regardless of the type of mouthwash prescribed postoperatively. Conclusion: In cigarette smokers and non-smokers, CHX and SPM are effective in reducing periodontal soft-tissue inflammation after NSPT. Background: Povidone-iodine 1% mouthwash is one of the products recommended for preventing and controlling COVID-19 infection in dental procedures. Jatropha multifida Linn. has the same antiseptic effect as povidone-iodine. Purpose: The objective is to determine the effectiveness and interaction effect of secondary metabolites from the latex of Jatropha multifida Linn. and povidone-iodine against the main protease (MPro) SARS-CoV-2 and the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein - ACE2 receptors. Methods: The in silico test was used in this study and carried out using the Molegro Virtual Docker software for molecular docking and BIOVIA Discovery Studio and PyMOL for visualization. Results: The results show that secondary metabolite compounds contained in the latex of Jatropha multifida Linn. have a better effectiveness potential in relation to MPro SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-2 spike protein - ACE2 receptors than povidone-iodine. Conclusion: The latex of Jatropha multifida Linn. shows potential as a preventive and curative therapy for COVID-19 in the in silico study.

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is essential in acute allergy reactions and chronic allergic inflammatory disorders.Purpose: This report aims to describe the advantages of total IgE screening for detecting mouthwash allergic reactions associated with ROEM.Case Presentation: A 29-year-old woman came to the Oral Medicine clinic complaining of canker sores all over her mouth and swollen lips accompanied by crusts that had been bleeding easily two months prior. Complaints worsened after the patient used alcohol-containing mouthwash without a history of fever or other symptoms. Extra-oral examination showed upper and lower lip edema with hemorrhagic crusts that bleed easily. No lesions were found in other parts of the body. Intra-oral examination showed ulcers, multiple, irregular in almost the entire oral mucosa. Laboratory examination revealed non-reactive anti-HSV-1 IgG and a total IgE serum level of 612.00 IU/mL. The diagnosis based on the examination results is recurrent oral erythema multiforme.Case Management: The patient was instructed to stop using alcohol-containing mouthwash, maintain oral hygiene, a healthy lifestyle, adequate hydration, and a balanced diet. Prednisone, benzydamine HCL mouthwash, 0.025% hyaluronic acid mouthwash, multivitamins, and hydrocortisone cream were given as pharmacological therapy. The oral lesions improved in 12 days and the total IgE serum level examination showed a decrease (385 IU/mL).Conclusion: The total IgE examination can be a screening tool for mouthwash allergy-related reactions to disease and represents the response of ROEM therapy as evidenced by clinical improvement.Keywords: allergy, erythema multiforme, IgE, mouthwash, recurrent

Abstract Objectives Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) increases the length of hospitalization and mortality rate. This study aimed to determine the effect of propolis mouthwash on the incidence of VAP in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Materials and methods Triple-blind, comparative randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted over one year, with 110 ICU patients at Imam-Hossein and Bahar hospitals (Shahroud) and Kowsar Hospital (Semnan) in Iran. The intervention group used 15 cc of 0.06% propolis mouthwash solution twice daily at 8 AM and 4 PM for seven days. The control group used 15 cc of 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash at the same times and duration. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, APACHE II, Beck Oral Assessment Scale, and Modified Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (MCPIS). Results There was no significant difference in demographic information, disease severity, and oral health between the two groups before and after intervention (P > 0.05). The incidence of VAP in the intervention group compared to the control group was 10.9% vs. 30.9% on the third day (P = 0.0166, 95% CI: 0.53–0.83 and RR = 0.35), 23.6% vs. 43.6% on the fifth day (P = 0.0325 and 95% CI: 0.31–0.95 and RR = 0.54), and 25.5% vs. 47.3% on the seventh day (P = 0.0224, 95% CI: 0.32–0.92, and RR = 0.54). The Mann–Whitney indicated the incidence of VAP was significantly lower in the intervention group on the third, fifth, and seventh days. Conclusion Propolis mouthwash can be considered as an alternative to chlorhexidine mouthwash for ICU patients. Clinical relevance Propolis mouthwash serves as a simple, economical intervention to potentially reduce incidence of VAP. Trial registration (IRCT20110427006318N12, date 02.04.2019).

Abstract Background Alterations in the mechanical properties of the materials utilized in orthodontic appliances could affect the working properties of the appliances, thereby affecting clinical progress and outcome. Numerous studies have confirmed the correlation between alloy corrosion and raised surface roughness, which has a direct impact on the working characteristics of orthodontic archwires. Methods Thirty nickel-titanium (NiTi) orthodontic archwires were utilized in this study. Patients were randomly selected and allocated into three groups according to the randomization plan; (The control group): subjects practiced regular oral hygiene; (The fluoride group): subjects used fluoride for intensive prophylaxis; (The chlorhexidine group): subjects used chlorhexidine. Representative samples were evaluated by SEM, and then SEM images with high resolution were examined using Image J software to determine the surface roughness and obtain the results for further statistical analysis. Results Our findings indicated a significant difference was found between the three groups regarding the anterior and posterior parts between the control and the two other groups and a non-significant difference between NaF and CHX groups. Overall, the p-value for group comparisons was 0.000 for both parts, indicating a highly significant difference especially between the control and NaF groups. Conclusion Mouthwashes containing sodium fluoride demonstrated more significant surface alterations than the control and CHX groups and should be prescribed in accordance with orthodontic materials to reduce side effects.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness of a combination of ε-poly-L-lysine (ε-PL), funme peptide (FP) as well as domiphen against oral pathogens, and assess the efficacy of a BOP® mouthwash supplemented with this combination in reducing halitosis and supragingival plaque in a clinical trial. Materials and methods The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the compound against Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus mutans, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans were determined by the gradient dilution method. Subsequently, the CCK-8 assay was used to detect the toxicity of mouthwash on human gingival fibroblastst, and the effectiveness in reducing halitosis and supragingival plaque of the mouthwash supplemented with the combination was analyzed by a randomized, double-blind, parallel-controlled clinical trial. Background: Oral mucositis as a complication of chemotherapy has posed significant challenges to the quality of life in cancer patients. Tricyclic antidepressants, including nortriptyline can control the pain caused by mucositis by inhibiting sodium channels. Since patient compliance and rapid drug effect are the goals of the proposed formulation, it was decided to prepare and evaluate a nortriptyline mouthwash according to the United States Pharmacopeia. Methods: Based on the pharmacopeia, the necessary excipients in the nortriptyline mouthwash were determined, and the amount of each was specified. After validating the UV spectrophotometric technique, drug interaction with the mouthwash container was investigated. In addition to measuring the aqueous activity, necessary microbiological tests were also performed. Results: The UV spectroscopy method validation for nortriptyline was performed at the obtained maximum absorption wavelength (238.5 nm). The findings of the investigation of the interaction of polyethylene terephthalate container with nortriptyline indicate almost no drug adsorption into the internal part of the mouthwash container over 28 days. The results of antibacterial and antifungal/antimycotic tests were within the standard range of the United States Pharmacopeia. The mouthwash's aqueous activity was also found to be 0.81, indicating an unfavorable environment for microbial growth. Conclusion: This study has shown that the prepared nortriptyline mouthwash meets microbiological resistance standards and there is no interaction between the active drug ingredient and the proposed container. Therefore, this formulation can be suggested as a promising candidate for clinical exploration.
