TRADITIONAL ecological knowledge , *CLIMATE change , *CLIMATE change adaptation , *RIGHT to communicate , *GOVERNMENT policy , *ENVIRONMENTAL degradation - Abstract
Local, indigenous and traditional communities possess a body of knowledge about their territory that can be fundamental for adaptation to the effects of climate change. However, this knowledge, known in academic circles as "traditional ecological knowledge" (TEK), is usually ignored in public policies that seek to respond to climate change and environmental degradation. This situation is not only the result of the epistemological gap between Western totalizing knowledge and grassroots knowledge, but also of the structural deficits in communication and information that afflict many vulnerable communities.

This article seeks to discuss the associations elaborated by riverine interlocutors between infrastructures and the landscape in which they occur, within the context of climate change in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Here, we debate the relational character of infrastructures, and how they act as important markers of river seasonality, landscape, people's existence, and practices from the perspective of the accessed riverine people. This paper's discussion is supported by qualitative data from semi-structured interviews and field notes from two riverine communities in the Amazonas state: Tumbira and Lago do Catalão. Inspired by authors who dialogue with Social Studies of Science and Technology and discuss infrastructures, their effects, their relational and ontological character, we seek to identify entanglements of landscape and infrastructure, and their implications in the practices and ways of living of riverine Amazonian people. Elements such as gas pipelines, power transmission lines, hydroelectric plants, cargo ships, and highways emerge, affect, and are affected in these entangled landscapes in the eyes of the riverine people. They merge with other entanglements such as the rivers and creeks that perform the riverine landscape and life. Thus, they induce reflections on such relationships and the affectations permeated by fears, wishes, and (dis)trust of their operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CLIMATE change , *HUMAN rights - Abstract
The present study aims to bring some reflections on the role of the corporate citizen faithful to the law, as synonymous with a company that has an effective compliance program, in terms of possible violations of human rights as a result of climate change. To do so, it discusses climate change and human rights. In this first stage, the focus is on the interrelationship between the aforementioned themes, insofar as the first can directly affect the second. Then, in the expanded study, when the company is listed as an important agenda promoting climate change, some soft law instruments that regulate the subject matter of study are listed, mainly the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights 2011. Finally, it reflects on how the corporate citizen faithful to the law can be a partner of human rights in the context of climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the legal instruments that respond to the climate crisis at the international and national levels, focusing on Uruguay's leadership in response to climate change. It also includes an international perspective on compliance with norms and general environmental protection issues, as well as the impact of new European legislation in terms of sustainability. An illustrative overview of environmental actions carried out in Uruguay is presented, and an examination is made of how the country can integrate into the green or sustainable economy at the national and international levels. The importance of adapting to new laws on human rights and environmental due diligence is mentioned due to Uruguay's importance as a provider and exporter of goods and services to the EU and Germany. The importance of addressing global warming is also highlighted, and some solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change are mentioned. The article discusses the development of environmental law at the international level and its importance in environmental protection. International agreements on climate change, such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, are mentioned. In addition, the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between Mercosur and the EU and environmental concerns related to deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon are discussed. The article provides information on the new German legislation on supply chain due diligence, which will be implemented starting in 2023. Other similar legislations in California, the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands are also mentioned, as well as the proposal of the European Union. The importance of sustainable supply chain management is emphasized, and the impact of these laws in terms of sustainability is mentioned. Additionally, the importance of cooperation and innovation in this issue is mentioned. The article presents Uruguay's commitment to international environmental conventions, such as the Paris Agreement and the Basel Convention. The implementation of local programs to meet the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals 2030 is also mentioned. The sale of carbon bonds to countries in the northern hemisphere and the adoption of environmental legislation since 1935, with the creation of the Ministry of the Environment in 2020, are highlighted. The article presents the need to include an Environmental Law chapter with sanctions in Uruguay's Penal Code. The approval of the Comprehensive Waste Management Law in 2019 and the prohibition of the manufacture and sale of plastic straws starting in January 2022 are mentioned. The article also discusses the protected legal interest in environmental law and the need for specific sanctions. The article discusses international environmental legislation and Uruguay's position on it. The importance of Uruguay acting in consensus with other countries in the region is emphasized. Uruguay has made progress in environmental matters, such as the reduction of CO2 emissions and the protection of native forests. Additionally, the country has signed international agreements and implemented programs to meet the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The article presents trends in international environmental legislation and Uruguay's positioning in this field. The importance of carbon neutrality and adherence to renewable energies is highlighted. The article also discusses Sustainability-Linked Bonds and the country's financing strategy in relation to climate change. The article presents trends in international environmental legislation and Uruguay's positioning in this field. It highlights the principle of internalizing costs and the meeting in Costa Rica where technical cooperation was formalized in areas of environmental impact and protected areas protection. The commitment to reduce methane emissions by 30% by the end of the decade is mentioned. The importance of environmental insurance is discussed. [Extracted from the article]

This article shows that the experience accrued by the Chilean Supreme Court in lawsuits on tort and environmental liability, should allow it to address the ethical-environmental and legal issues that global warming implies, either by preventing harm through the imposition on the major emitters of greenhouse gases, including the State, of the duty to reduce emissions rapidly and significantly, or by demanding and enforcing the obligation to adapt to climate change through the attribution of tort liability or environmental liability. The implementation of ecosystem-based adaptation (eba) and blue carbon (bc) favors climate change management; the Greater Caribbean has great potential to develop both measures, however, there is limited contextualization on the support provided by the countries for their implementation. Under this approach, the article analyzes the inclusion of eba and bc measures in regulations and institutions as a mechanism for climate change management in the Greater Caribbean. For this purpose, it conducts a qualitative documentary review (n = 77) in which 25 % of the records address the regulations and institutions that support climate change adaptation and mitigation, 35 % present regulatory impacts in the execution of eba and bc, and 40 % of the texts relate the marine protected areas as propitious policy instruments for the management of both measures. The records show that eba and bc need specific support regulations, the application of eba in mangroves and seagrasses is limited, and the bc is incipient. There are difficulties to access funding and a need to strengthen governance and improve stakeholder participation and institutional capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

KINGDOM of God , *CLIMATE change mitigation , *WATER security , *PLURALITY voting , *NUCLEAR energy - Abstract
Environmentally conscious citizen don't think homogeneous. Their different perceptions of the world cause a moral diversity in climate politics. The article shows that religious and non-religious approaches to climate adaptation refer back to a variety of transcendent notions of truth. Claims of validity result from concrete images of the world including community constructing ideas and action guiding notions such as the kingdom of God or the icon "blue Planet". We can therefore not expect worldwide homogeneous climate-politics. But notions of truth do not describe the world as it is, they rather show the images that people follow. This is why even opposing conceptions for climate mitigation such as the demand for and the claim against nuclear power can be open to compromise. Voting for the acceptance of plurality, the article suggests not to ignore the Christian wisdom of Chalcedon that offers a way, how to deal with opposing proclaims. The article originates from the Global Centre for Water Security and Climate Change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the influence of education on the sustainable behavior of the inhabitants of the municipality of Sabaneta. Using data from the 2018 Citizen Perception Survey on Quality of Life, a probit model is used to analyze the effects of education considering sociodemographic characteristics. The results show better environmental behavior as schooling increases, although there are significative differences between individuals: it is more favorable among people under 55 years of age and rural dwellers than among members of their control groups. These results are of interest for educational initiatives aimed at improving attitudes towards the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 21st century is the century of environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change. Climate change will condition public policies and private actions throughout the world to achieve the objective of reducing emissions enhanced in international agreements (Kyoto, Paris). The objective of this article is to carry out a review of the already verified effects of climate change in the Mediterranean region, as well as the adaptation and mitigation measures in the short-medium term to face global warming, such as the adaptation of urban spaces (local scale), and the improvement of teaching about this phenomenon. According to the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically n.13 ("Action for the climate"), it establishes two main actions that countries must complete by 2030: the approval of laws and mitigation and adaptation plans, and the implementation of educational programs. Environmental education like all forms of education is a process of learning that requires an optimally designed teaching curriculum. However, unlike other conventional courses and forms of education, environmental education is not a linear form of learning as it requires complex and placebased designed teaching due to the individuality and diversity of people and their local environment and biodiversity. Libya like most countries of the world has joined the active fight against climate change through the incorporation of environmental education into the traditional system of education and designing a curriculum for the entire school system to ensure uniformity in learning standards. This study carries out an investigation of the efficiency of the Libyan primary school environmental education curriculum from the perspective of primary school teachers. Using openended questionnaires designed using an adequate theoretical framework, teachers in Libya were surveyed for their perceptions on satisfaction with the curriculum, their dislikes about the curriculum, what they enjoyed the most in the curriculum, and how they prepared using it and the complementary modifications they carry out on it. The results of this study indicate a finding where the majority of the teachers were happy with its efficiency but have recommended several changes to it to enable it to become optimal. YELLOW fever , *CLIMATE change , *EPIDEMIOLOGY , *LAND cover , *CITY dwellers , *LOW temperatures - Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the occurrence of yellow fever - YF and the climate and environment during the epidemic-epizootic process in the Brazilian Southeast region from 2016 to 2018. Methods: the methodology considered four approaches: a spatial analysis of the epidemiological situation; detection of clusters of human cases and spatial distribution of epizootics in clusters; identification of environmental and climatic factors; and correlation of the relative risk of the clusters with the associated factors. Results: Most positive cases occurred in Minas Gerais and São Paulo. Clusters were detected in the years 2017 and 2018. The study period had the highest temperature values and the lowest precipitation compared to the 20-year climatological period of analysis. Seasonality marks the temporal pattern of the disease, where most cases occur between December and May. In addition, outbreaks occur with irregular periodicity when the virus finds favorable conditions for transmission. The constant transformation was observed in geographic space, where land use and land cover have the highest percentage linked to rural areas, followed by forest areas. A correlation between the relative risk of clusters and environmental and climatic factors was confirmed. Conclusion: The correlation of climatic and environmental factors and the presence of vectors and non-human primates-PNHs generated a vulnerability scenario for the Southeast region. Public health plans for vaccinating the population and controlling urban vectors should be evaluated to prevent the re-emergence of urban YF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Supplementation of grazing cattle with native and naturalized forages using silvopastoral systems has been suggested as an affordable strategy to reduce methane production and improve nutrition, diminishing the environmental impact of cattle production. Objective: To evaluate the effect of three tropical forage species in a silvopastoral arrangement on methane production and fermentation parameters using an in vitro ruminal simulation system (RUSITEC). Methods: Four diets were evaluated. The control treatment was a basal diet of colosuana grass (COL; Bothriochloa pertusa), while the other diets consisted of 70% COL complemented with 30% shrub forage from either Leucaena leucocephala (CL), Guazuma ulmifolia (CG), or Crescentia cujete (CT). A randomized complete block design with repeated measurements over time was used. Results: The inclusion of shrub forage did not affect pH, organic matter degradation (OMD) or volatile fatty acids (VFA). The inclusion of shrub forage affected the degradation of structural components. The concentration of N-NH3 increased in the CL diet compared to COL (p<0.05). In general, methane production in terms of mL/day, mL/g DMi, mL/g DMd, and mL/gOMd was reduced for CL compared to COL (p<0.05). Conclusions: Based on these results, inclusion of Leucaena leucocephala, Guazuma ulmifolia or Crescentia cujete on B. pertusa-based diets improves ruminal fermentation parameters and reduces in vitro methane production.

TEACHER training , *COMPULSORY education , *SECONDARY education , *OZONE layer , *CURRICULUM , *CLIMATE change - Abstract
Currently, many studies are already available on people's theoretical knowledge about climate change. The results of some of these studies show the existence of serious confusion regarding certain phenomena and basic concepts of great importance, even despite the fact that, in recent years, the problem regarding climate change has become increasingly relevant in different media, and it is also present in school curricula as a fundamental part of Education for Sustainability. Some of these confusions constitute true alternative ideas. This paper first analyses the incidence and strength of five of these ideas in students of Compulsory Secondary Education (CSE) and in various groups of teachers in training. Then, a didactic proposal is made to achieve change in one of those ideas, which involves various concepts and principles of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RAINFALL , *GEOGRAPHIC information systems , *LAND use , *CITIES & towns , *CLIMATE change - Abstract
In this paper, three case studies are analyzed in Uruguay at the basin level, to identify the factors that favor the flood phenomenon. Transformations in land use and eventually climate change are considered. Over a 30-year period, land use modifications were evaluated using a Geographic Information System, and the variability of rainfall and river levels was analyzed. The three basins show completely different behavior from their land use change, and show increasing trends in rainfall over the period analyzed. It is evident that land use change is one of the most influential factors in the increase of flooding in urban areas. These transformations are mostly related to the exploitation of soil for the generation of commodities for export and generate modifications in the agrarian territories in Uruguay. The study was inspired by the theoretical approaches of Beghtol, Buckland, Kleinberg, and Hjørland to discuss knowledge representation on Climate Change and COVID-19 in the context of Agenda 2030. This exploratory research was based on bibliometric methods through VOSviewer and CitNetexplorer tools to analyze the terms Climate Change and COVID-19, in the databases Scopus, Web of Science, and Dimensions, in the period 2019-2020. Approaches 7 and 8 of domain analysis were used to discuss the knowledge of disciplinarity and to identify the emergence of domains. Data collected from Brazil National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, in the Lattes Platform and Directory of Research Groups, were added for analysis purposes. The conclusion pointed out that Climate Change and COVID-19 can be considered emerging domains, suggesting a possible post-disciplinary model. The 2030 Agenda reinforces the importance of international cooperation and a commitment to exchange information on scientific communities and other communities that discuss sustainable solutions to global problems such as Climate Change and COVID-19. HAILSTORMS , *URBAN agriculture , *CLIMATE change , *HORTICULTURE - Abstract
On the night of 1 June 2021, the northern region of Maputo and Matola city was buffeted by hailstorms of various sizes, the most predominant ranging from 0.5 cm - 4.5 cm. This study aims to analyze the impacts of hailstorms on urban horticulture in the northern strip of Maputo and Matola city. We also observed the effects on domestic horticultural production in some neighborhoods affected by hailstorms. Mixed methodology was chosen, supported by the following methods and techniques: bibliographical and documental research, direct observation, measurement of the dimension and characteristics of the hail generated in the soil, cartography, interview, analysis, and synthesis. In all production areas it was notorious the total and partial destruction of ready-to-cut vegetable, with emphasis on cabbage, lettuce, and onions, which resulted in heavy financial losses for farmers. These losses generated a significant increase in vegetable prices in the following days in local markets. This research suggests the need to closely monitor weather events considering the dynamics imposed by climate change, as well as to improve the system of communicating environmental risks to the most vulnerable population.
