Ensemble-based optimization (EnOpt), commonly used in reservoir management, can be seen as a special case of a natural evolution algorithm. Stein's lemma gives a new interpretation of EnOpt. This interpretation enables us to study EnOpt in the context of general mutation distributions. In this paper, a non-Gaussian generalization of EnOpt (GenOpt) is proposed, where the control gradient is estimated using Stein's lemma, and the mutation distribution is updated separately via natural evolution. For the multivariate case, a Gaussian copula is used to represent dependencies between the marginals. The correlation matrix is also iteratively optimized. It is shown that using beta distributions as marginals in the GenOpt algorithm addresses the truncation problem that sometimes arises when applying EnOpt on bounded optimization problems. The performance of the proposed optimization algorithm is evaluated on several test cases. The experiments indicate that GenOpt is less dependent on the chosen hyperparameters, and it is able to converge more quickly than EnOpt on a reservoir management test case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The availability of natural protein sequences synergized with generative AI provides new paradigms to engineer enzymes. Although active enzyme variants with numerous mutations have been designed using generative models, their performance often falls short of their wild type counterparts. Additionally, in practical applications, choosing fewer mutations that can rival the efficacy of extensive sequence alterations is usually more advantageous. Pinpointing beneficial single mutations continues to be a formidable task. In this study, using the generative maximum entropy model to analyze Renilla luciferase (RLuc) homologs, and in conjunction with biochemistry experiments, we demonstrated that natural evolutionary information could be used to predictively improve enzyme activity and stability by engineering the active center and protein scaffold, respectively. The success rate to improve either luciferase activity or stability of designed single mutants is ~50%. This finding highlights nature's ingenious approach to evolving proficient enzymes, wherein diverse evolutionary pressures are preferentially applied to distinct regions of the enzyme, ultimately culminating in an overall high performance. We also reveal an evolutionary preference in RLuc toward emitting blue light that holds advantages in terms of water penetration compared to other light spectra. In philosophical discourse, vagueness is commonly regarded as an undesirable and problematic aspect of human experience. Such standpoints are not unfounded. However, in this article, I argue that vagueness may in certain instances also possess an instrumental role that supports specific modes of human aspiration, including the artistic and the mathematical. In particular, I investigate the ways in which vagueness not only hinders but also fosters the emergence of an aesthetic quality of experience during the imaginative endeavours of fine art and mathematics. The manner in which the benefit from felt vagueness ties into the formation of artistic and mathematical scenarios helps to illuminate deep and often unnoticed relations between these two domains of human ingenuity. In this article, the overall concept of experience and the particular features of human experience, such as the aesthetic and the vague, are examined in the context of John Dewey’s philosophical pragmatism. In Dewey’s philosophical framework, the human mind and culture are understood as natural phenomena. As such, the Deweyan approach fits the paradigm of a twenty-first century scientific understanding of the inherent ontological unity of all modes of human existence and activity.

Background and purpose: We aimed to assess the course and predictors of functional outcome after single and multiple intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in pediatric patients with cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) and to conduct a risk assessment of a third bleed during the first follow‐up year after second ICH. Methods: We included patients aged ≤18 years with complete baseline characteristics, a magnetic resonance imaging dataset, ≥1 CCM‐related ICH and ≥1 follow‐up examination, who were treated between 2003 and 2021. Neurological functional status was obtained using modified Rankin Scale scores at diagnosis, before and after each ICH, and at last follow‐up. Kaplan–Meier analysis was performed to determine the cumulative 1‐year risk of third ICH. Results: A total of 55 pediatric patients (median [interquartile range] age 12 [11] years) were analyzed. Univariate analysis identified brainstem cavernous malformation (BSCM; p = 0.019) as a statistically significant predictor for unfavorable outcome after second ICH. Outcome after second ICH was significantly worse in 12 patients (42.9%; p = 0.030) than after first ICH and in five patients (55.6%; p = 0.038) after a third ICH compared to a second ICH. Cumulative 12‐month risk of rebleeding during the first year after a second ICH was 10.7% (95% confidence interval 2.8%–29.37%). Conclusions: Pediatric patients with a BSCM have a higher risk of worse outcome after second ICH. Functional outcome improves over time after an ICH but worsens following each ICH compared to baseline or previous ICH. Second bleed was associated with neurological deterioration compared to initial ICH, and this deteriorated further after a third ICH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite recent advances, the origin and utility of consciousness remains under debate. Using an evolutionary perspective on the origin of consciousness, this review elaborates on the promising theoretical background suggested in the temporospatial theory of consciousness, which outlines world-brain alignment as a critical predisposition for controlling behavior and adaptation. Such a system can be evolutionarily effective only if it can provide instant cohesion between the subsystems, which is possible only if it performs an intrinsic activity modified in light of the incoming stimulation. One can assume that the world-brain interaction results in a particular interference pattern predetermined by connectome complexity. This is what organisms experience as their exclusive subjective state, allowing the anticipation of regularities in the environment. Thus, an anticipative system can emerge only in a regular environment, which guides natural selection by reinforcing corresponding reactions and decreasing the system entropy. Subsequent evolution requires complicated, layered structures and can be traced from simple organisms to human consciousness and society. This paper examines the concept of conscious experience from an evolutionary epistemological perspective, inspired by a non-reductionist naturalistic approach. Situated in the conceptual framework of philosophy of mind, it considers what processes could have led to the appearance and development of a specifically human mind in our biosphere, both from a phylogenetic and an ontogenetic point of view. Salient features of Edelman’s theory of consciousness are revisited from an epigenetic perspective, in light of some of the most recent measurements of conscious experience proposed by Tononi and other scholars in the field of Integrated Information Theory (IIT). The paper analyzes some criticalities in the algorithmic approach of the IIT, highlighting the need to identify new measures of complexity (new axiomatic systems) for the study of semantic processes of transmission of biological (intentional) information.

Biogenesis and abiogenesis stages of natural evolution are the well-known terms to characterize a quite different phases of life development on the Earth. It is accustomed to think that an abiogenesis as the early stage of evolution is predominantly the chemistry phase dealing with interaction between less or more complex polymer chains when possible appearances of life if any assumes significant involvement of collective effects. A biogenesis as the later stage of evolution is the time for predominance of Darwin's laws manifesting, in part, in competition among individual species in the form of variability-heredity game. In this report, we discuss possible nature of abiogenesis-biogenesis transition as a natural result of energy development in an evolutionary cybernetic system simulated by mathematical model of open thermodynamic system with unlimited number of energy links with its surroundings. AIM: To report the clinical features and evolution of zone II retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: RetCam images of preterm infants with zone II ROP at our hospital between January 2009 and January 2019 were reviewed. The location, extent, and severity of ROP were recorded. Eyes were classified as type 1 zone II, type 2 zone II, and mild zone II ROP. The clinical features and evolution of zone II ROP were analyzed. RESULTS: In total, 184 infants (302 eyes) were enrolled. Of these, 55 eyes (18%) developed type 1 zone II ROP, 39 eyes (13%) developed type 2 zone II ROP, and 208 eyes (69%) developed mild zone II ROP. The proportion of type 1 zone II ROP significantly decreased over the 10y. The onset of type 2 zone II and mild zone II ROP were 1wk earlier than type 1 zone II, and both regressed at 45wk. Isolated neovascular tuft (popcorn) and double track signs were characteristic manifestations of zone II ROP. Eighty-seven percent of type 1 zone II ROP regressed completely with an unfavorable outcome that emerged in seven eyes after laser treatment. CONCLUSION: Zone II is an area with ROP disease at various risk levels. Zone II ROP has unique clinical presentations like popcorn and double track signs. Over time, the proportion of zone II ROP with high risk gradually decrease and respond well to therapy.

Las sociedades contemporáneas proyectan horizontes de futuro, ventanas sociológicas de exploración lanzadas desde el presente hacia el futuro que afrontan las ventajas, así como los peligros que afectan a la naturaleza humana tanto en la esfera pública así como en la privada. Estas constelaciones enfrentan la incertidumbre, eso “desconocido conocido” (el punto ciego desde el que observo y veo que no veo) pues en cuanto ámbito de lo indeterminado (Apeiron según Anaximandro) permanece todavía velado, pero es desvelable a través de las premisas de perfectibilidad y racionalidad abiertas por la Ilustración, especialmente a través de la figura de Condorcet que actúa como narrativa preparatoria. El objetivo principal de este trabajo se expresa en el análisis sociológico de las disputas sostenidas entre tres de las narrativas -el humanismo, el transhumanismo y el poshumanismo- que asumen contornos distintos entre los conocimientos de las ciencias y las humanidades que pugnan o bien por preservar o bien por transgredir los límites de lo humano, para concluir proponiendo un “principio proaccionario” limitado de transgresión basado en la noción de “capital biocultural”. Contemporary societies project horizons of future, sociological windows of exploration projected from the present into the future, which take into account the dangers which will affect the human experience in the public as well as in the private spheres. They imagine how the human life will be in the future according to the decisions taken in the present. These constellations face uncertainty, that “known unknown” (the blind point from which I observe and don´t see that I don´t see) because as a part of the undeterminate yet veiled, could be unveiled throughout the premises of perfectibility, calculation and rationality which were open by the influence of Enlightenment, mainly by the figure of Condorcet who stablished the preparatory narrative. The main goal of this paper is the sociological analysis of the conceptual struggles between the three narratives -the humanism, the transhumanism and the posthumanism- which have different positions on either to keep or to go off the limits of the human nature to suggest a limited “proactionary principle” of enhancement based in the notion of “biocultural capital”.

The aerosol at the previous time (initial aerosol) and climate conditions control the next step annual variation of global air pollution through the complex aerosol-climate interaction. However, the individual influences remain unclear, leaving a great gap for understanding the mechanism of air pollution evolution and supporting the environment management. We estimate the annual variation using statistical methods and satellite observations at global scale from 2001 to 2016 Results show that significant variation of annual aerosol occurs over 13.6% of land areas, in which a perturbation of aerosol may cause 0.58 ± 0.45 times change in the next phase. Initial aerosol and climate influences contribute 48.4–51.6% of the total variation, respectively. Specifically, the influences of precipitation, air temperature and surface temperature represent 0.1, 18.3 and 33.2% of the total variation. Physically, the observed variation is strongly correlated with fine mode aerosols, radiative scattering and warm/hot summers in temperate and cold zones. The environmental management therefore should implement cause-oriented strategies for emission control or climatic adaption.

John Dewey’s philosophical pragmatism offers a reformatory approach to the arduous relationship between natural sciences and humanities. The crucial issue, which Dewey sets himself to resolve, is the pre-Darwinian influence of classical philosophy upon various scholarly practices. Ancient background assumptions still today permeate a considerable proportion of academic research and argumentation on both sides of the debate. Even evolutionary accounts appear to be affected. In order to avoid the often implicit, but nonetheless problematic, consequences that ensue from such archaic premises, I examine Dewey’s reappraisal of the concepts of art, science and knowledge. An analysis of these key concepts renders it possible to understand the proper function of aesthetic experience. In this paper, natural constitution of an aesthetic experience, which carries one of the intrinsic relations between art and science, comprises the core of the proposed solution. Furthermore, establishment of an integral aesthetic connection forms a fruitful basis for further bridging of the gap between hard sciences and humanities.

Fritillariae Bulbus are the most commonly used antitussive and edible herbs in China. Based on UPLC-QTOF-MS and UPLC-QQQ-MS, the validated MRM-based non-targeted quantitative method was applied to determinate the contents of 48 Fritillaria alkaloids (FAs) in three Fritillaria species (F. thunbergii Miq., F. unibracteata and F. ussuriensis). The RNA-Seq results showed that gene transcript levels have different expression patterns in three Fritillaria species. Based on transcriptome data, the full-length cDNA sequences of squalene epoxidase gene were cloned and characterized. Natural evolution of squalene epoxidase genes resulted in four mutations (C236R, M489L, G510A and K517R) in three Fritillaria species. Molecular docking analysis showed that the 236 residue is located inside the pocket and the binding center while other three residues are located on the surface of the protein. Functional verification indicated the mutations of SQE (C236R) could effectively increase the activity of SQE and obtain higher yield of 2,3-oxidosqualene in recombinant yeast. And the mutations of SQE (M489L and G510A), which increased the hydrophobicity of the protein surface, could also enhance the activity of SQE. This study provides major insights into the metabolites differentiation of FAs biosynthesis, and a firm foundation for the quality control and metabolic engineering of Fritillariae bulbus. Objective: A greater wrist depth/width ratio and wrist depth/palm length ratio are known risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome. We hypothesized that these parameters might also predict progression in patients who were not surgically treated., Methods: Seventy-eight patients with moderately severe idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome of at least 10 months duration at recruitment, who declined surgical treatment and steroid injection, underwent repeated neurophysiological assessments after 3 years. A > 10% increase in median SNAP latency was taken as evidence of significant deterioration., Results: Patients with a wrist ratio ≥ 0.72 showed a statistically significant deterioration in SNAP latency from 5.46 (SD 2.09) to 7.16 (SD 1.56) ms and in SNAP amplitude from 30.19 (SD 13.8) to 16.62 (SD 14.42) µv. For those with a wrist-to-palm ratio ≥ 0.42, SNAP latency deteriorated from 5.27 (SD 1.21) to 7.1 (SD 1.52) ms, and amplitude from 32.78 (SD 13.76) to 19.45 (SD 16.62) µv. Patients with lower ratios did not show significant changes in any neurophysiological parameter. By inverting the movement of the galaxies, which are constantly moving (except the ones forming local clusters) away from each other and thanks to a system of complex equations, astrophysicists have found that all matter detected in a 13.799 billion light-year radius was originally contained in a volume 10 24 times smaller than an atom. In the same spirit, a relationship between the processes of biodegradation and the general evolution of the entire universe is suggested in this short communication. In Europe, very small forest areas can be considered to be old-growth, and they are mainly located in Eastern Europe. The typical structures of old growth forests infrequently occur in Mediterranean mountainous environments, since they have been affected by human activities for centuries. This study focused on a remote and almost pure Italian maple stand located in southern Italy, which has not been managed for long time due to its inaccessibility. The effects of natural evolution on the forest stand were evaluated through the analysis of the spatial and chronological structure and the regeneration patterns, then estimating the amounts and quality of deadwood occurrence. Across the whole stand, all the trees with DBH (diameter at breast height) larger than 50 cm (LLT, large living trees) were measured (DBH and height) and age was also determined through a dendrochronological approach. The diameters observed ranged between 50 and 145 cm with ages of 120 to 250 years. The Latham index calculated for trees within the sample plot highlighted a multilayered canopy with a dominant layer of large living trees (age > 120 years). The size-class distribution of stems had a reverse-J shape, and basal area was 52 m ha. Deadwood was exclusively constituted by standing dead trees and CWD and its volume was on average 31 m ha. Pure Italian maple forests are generally rare in Europe, and it was unexpected to find a forest stand characterized by a so complex structure with old growth attributes. The study of complex forest stand, even if small, could give precious information on the forest evolution, clarifying also diverse auto-ecological traits of tree species that usually are not common in our forests. Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) form a popular optimisation paradigm inspired by natural evolution. In recent years the field of evolutionary computation has developed a rigorous analytical theory to analyse the runtimes of EAs on many illustrative problems. Here we apply this theory to a simple model of natural evolution. In the Strong Selection Weak Mutation (SSWM) evolutionary regime the time between occurrences of new mutations is much longer than the time it takes for a mutated genotype to take over the population. In this situation, the population only contains copies of one genotype and evolution can be modelled as a stochastic process evolving one genotype by means of mutation and selection between the resident and the mutated genotype. The probability of accepting the mutated genotype then depends on the change in fitness. We study this process, SSWM, from an algorithmic perspective, quantifying its expected optimisation time for various parameters and investigating differences to a similar evolutionary algorithm, the well-known (1+1) EA. We show that SSWM can have a moderate advantage over the (1+1) EA at crossing fitness valleys and study an example where SSWM outperforms the (1+1) EA by taking advantage of information on the fitness gradient. Bauxite residue, a highly alkaline solid waste, is extremely hazardous to the surrounding environment and current research approaches have largely focused on the removal and separation of alkaline substances. Natural weathering processes may be a step forward in terms of their regeneration. In this study, natural evolution of basic alkalinity, electrical conductivity, exchangeable ions and acid neutralizing capacity of residue in the disposal areas was discussed. Minerals, exchangeable cations and alkaline anions were analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and titration, respectively. Acid neutralizing capacity was carried out by batch neutralization experiments. Basic alkalinity, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity and exchangeable sodium percentage decreased with increasing disposal duration. Sodium was the predominant exchangeable cation in fresh residue but its concentration significantly decreased with increasing time from initial disposal. The acid neutralizing capacity of bauxite residue was investigated by incubation with hydrochloric acid. Acid neutralizing capacity curves changed with disposal duration and each revealed a characteristic buffering behavior that could be controlled by its alkaline components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We look at dark energy from a biology inspired viewpoint by means of the Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) and late time cosmological observations. We find that dynamical dark energy comes out on top, or in the ABC language naturally selected, over the standard Λ CDM cosmological scenario. We confirm this conclusion is robust to whether baryon acoustic oscillations and Hubble constant priors are considered. Our results show that the algorithm prefers low values of the Hubble constant, consistent or at least a few standard deviation away from the cosmic microwave background estimate, regardless of the priors taken initially in each model. This supports the result of the traditional MCMC analysis and could be viewed as strengthening evidence for dynamical dark energy being a more favorable model of late time cosmology. Six plots have been drawn in an mixed aged coppice stand, 40 years after last coppicing; they represent a typical expression of Doronico-Carpinetum phytosociological association and they are characteristic of many woods of Gargano’s territory, composed by Quercus cerris L. (turkey oak), Quercus pubescens Willd. (downy oak), Acer opalus Mill. (italian maple), Carpinus betulus L. (european hornbeam), Ostrya carpinifolia Scop. (hop hornbeam). Compared treatments are: natural evolution of the coppice without thinning versus two thinning regimes with different intensity, both aimed to convert the stands into high forests. 1200 and 1600 stems per hectare were released in the conversion plots. Plots, control and treated in 2001, have been measured before and immediately after thinning and remeasured five years later. At the present time, stands are characterized by a basically monolayered structure, in which turkey oak is prevalent in term of basal area. Moreover in thinned areas, losses on the released shoots number are unimportant both in absolute and in percent terms; in control plot, instead, competition by plants of upper storey on the dominated ones means high values of mortality.

This article revisits the place of normative and other practical issues in the wider conceptual architecture of communication theory, building on the tradition of philosophical pragmatism. The article first characterizes everyday concepts of communication as the accumulated outcome of natural evolution and history: practical resources for human existence and social coexistence. Such practical concepts have served as the point of departure for diverse theoretical conceptions of what communication is. The second part of the article highlights the past neglect and current potential of normative communication theories that ask, in addition, what communication ought to be, and what it could be, taking the relationship between communication and justice as a case in point. The final section returns to empirical conceptualizations of different institutions, practices and discourses of communication: In a pragmatist perspective, it is conceivable to study not only what communication is, but also what it could be, and what it ought to be. Ensemble-based optimization has recently received great attention as a potentially powerful technique for life-cycle production optimization, which is a crucial element of reservoir management. Recent publications have increased both the number of applications and the theoretical understanding of the algorithm. However, there is still ample room for further development since most of the theory is based on strong assumptions. Here, the mathematics (or statistics) of Ensemble Optimization is studied, and it is shown that the algorithm is a special case of an already well-defined natural evolution strategy known as Gaussian Mutation. A natural description of uncertainty in reservoir management arises from the use of an ensemble of history-matched geological realizations. A logical step is therefore to incorporate this uncertainty description in robust life-cycle production optimization through the expected objective function value. The expected value is approximated with the mean over all geological realizations. It is shown that the frequently advocated strategy of applying a different control sample to each reservoir realization delivers an unbiased estimate of the gradient of the expected objective function. However, this procedure is more variance prone than the deterministic strategy of applying the entire ensemble of perturbed control samples to each reservoir model realization. In order to reduce the variance of the gradient estimate, an importance sampling algorithm is proposed and tested on a toy problem with increasing dimensionality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To improve the study of mixed microalgal populations, three naturally evolved marine microalgal cultures were subjected to a light crushing mechanical treatment using a silicon spatula coupled with zymolyase treatment at four concentrations: 5, 10, 20 and 25 U/ml, for 15, 30, 45 and 60 min before being observed under a microscope. The enzyme concentration of 20 U/ml after 45 min reduces the size of macroscopic microalgal aggregates and improves the microscopic observation of the different microalgal species comprising the population. There was no improvement using the higher enzyme concentration. This paper proposes a new approach to the study of naturally evolved microalgal populations which is useful for distinguishing the morphology of the different species present in the population and allowing for the identification by classical keys, and also to obtain a pure culture from an inoculum of mixed species by using a micromanipulator for cell counting.
