Mountain landscapes support hydric and biodiversity potential under different ownership and land use perspectives. A focal point justifying their preservation is often the legislation’s ethical endorsement. Yet, when scales for assessment diverge without a common analytical purpose, the protective measures may become either ambiguous or insufficient. By considering that mountain cryosphere landscapes have both subjective and supply values, we focused on approaches to protect them and examined conceptual dissonances in their assessment. This ambiguity was examined by analyzing the hydric storage potential of the mountain cryosphere in semi-arid regions in the Andes. We reviewed the technical aspects of cryosphere hydrology and how current legislation aims to preserve freshwater supply and non-instrumental value. The analysis found a clash between instrumental and non-instrumental values and, most importantly, the neglect of a temporal dimension for landscape evolution. Particularly, landscape protection becomes suboptimal as scales of analysis for use and non-use values diverge. Therefore, we recommend analyzing mountain cryosphere landscapes as overlapped sub-units bearing a unified potential (future value) as a hydric resource. This analysis should fit the most inclusive scale on which transaction costs reflecting needs and insurance values reflecting management quality are optimal.

7. Representative versus Natural Values of Public Open Spaces—A Landscape Approach (Szczecin Case Study).

- Abstract
Apart from interactivity, representativeness (in the meaning of grandness) is the basic and required characteristic of public open spaces. The representativeness of public open spaces (POS) is understood in terms of their ability to portray cities and their inhabitants as a whole. This study considers the historical value of public spaces and determines their contemporary role as spaces for representing cities. Moreover, we explore the relationship between the natural value of such places and their representativeness function. It was necessary to define the criteria determining the representativeness of public spaces, including their physical, semiotic, and functional features. The study was carried out in the midtown zone of Szczecin. The subject of the study is urban landscape objects. The landscape, according to the definition presented by the European Landscape Convention, is part of the land, as perceived by local people and visitors, which evolves through time as a result of being acted upon by natural forces and human beings. The landscape approach used in this research enables an assessment that requires taking into account and comparing many aspects that build the layers of the landscape. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to assess the characteristics that distinguish POS in the symbolic, formal, location-related and functional layers and to examine their ecological value. The results of the study generally confirmed our hypothesis: i.e., embedding the studied POS within the city's tradition—with its strong semiotic connections and with the specific history of the place (genius loci)—increases the space's range of contemporary, representative functions. At the same time, an apparent decrease in the prestige of the studied POS was observed. Although they originally had high historical value, they either lost key artifacts constituting that identity or were excluded from the main functional and compositional axes of the city. Moreover, this study proves that the representativeness of POS, conditioned by historical value and contemporary functional, spatial, and location features, is generally inconsistent with their high natural value. Still, this inconsistency does not have to be a mean contradiction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

The concept of HNVF raises thanks to the integration of biodiversity theme into the CAP. The precise definition of the topic and the application of a correct identification procedure deeply affect the assessment needs of European RDPs. Nevertheless, the level of HNVF knowledge is rather limited due to a methodological variability and a structural lack of suitable data. The research aims at overtaking HNVF identification difficulties complying with specific Community requirements and the use of an efficient theoretical framework that allows accurate location and monitoring over time. The methodology results in characterization and accurate HNVF map for the Apulia Region that can effectively calibrate the implementation of the regional management policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CONFLICT of interests , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *NATURAL resources , *DATABASES , *BUILDINGS - Abstract
The article proposes a procedure for determining the location of potential spatial conflicts. The author presents issues concerning spatial conflicts which may arise as a result of different uses of spaces adjacent to each other. The proposed procedure has been tested on one of the districts of Poland's Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship, namely Nidzicki District. In order to determine the use of the space, CLC databases made available by the Chief Environmental Protection Inspectorate were used. Based on them, the use of fragments of space, which were also differentiated due to their natural value, was determined. For the thus described space, a map of burden of potential spatial conflicts was compiled. The proposed method may be used as a tool supporting the processes of space planning and monitoring the environmental changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Data were collected on the ichthyofauna of the Lake Velence from 38 sampling sites, on 9 sampling days during 2017 June. The data were collected by using battery operated electric fishing gears working with pulsating direct current, from boat and wading in the water. After the identification of the species all individuals were released, specimen collection was not implemented. The exact sites of the sampling were identified by GPS, the obtained EOV coordinates were processed using a commercial spatial analyst software. The analysis of the faunistical data was carried out using the Access data base management software. The number of individuals and the geocoordinate data were registered on site using a digital dictaphone. During our survey 11.928 fish specimen were cought and identified, representing 19 species. One of the 19 species (Weatherfish - Misgurnis fossilis) is protected at national level in Hungary, while two species (Asp - Leuciscus aspius; Weatherfish - Misgurnis fossilis) are listed in the Appendices of the Habitat Directive. The occurance of the invasive alien species black bullhead (Ameiurus melas) is completely new information, since recently the presence of the species was not mentioned by the previous papers from the Lake. Based on the number of species determined, the absolute (TA: 37) and relative (TR: 1,276) conservation values of the fish fauna were expressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VALUATION of real property , *URBAN research , *SOCIOECONOMICS , *URBAN planning & the environment , *LAND use & the environment - Abstract
Socioeconomic development involves expansion of urban areas, which has its consequence in changes in the condition of the environment. Mismanagement of the process results in disturbing the environmental balance. Examples of this effect include intensive, frequently wasteful exploitation of non-renewable natural resources and overly rapid consumption or improper management of renewable resources. Chaotically located investments result in pollution of the soil as well as surface and underground waters. The aim of this paper is to value the natural features of an area before the local land use plan is approved and the same area in the condition described by the plan. A comparison of the value before and after the plan is drawn up shows whether the intended project has met the conditions of natural compensation. They are met when the land use is planned in such a way so as to allow it to retain its value after the area has been transformed. The method used for the analysis is called 1st generation analysis of landscape value. It involves adding up the products of multiplication of partial areas with specific land use and the corresponding score point indexes. The index values lie between 0 and 1. The analysis was started with the stocktaking of the land features and the analysis of cartographic materials, as well as the provisions of the local plan approved in 2004. The state of land development as of 1995 and the specified target state, as per the plan, provided grounds for determination of the intensity of the environmental change resulting from the land development policy implemented in the area. ENVIRONMENTAL ethics , *AESTHETICS , *NATURE & nurture , *ETERNITY , *QUOTATIONS - Abstract
Many environmental philosophers have held naturalness to be a primary source of nature's value. Seen this way, the nature that is most valuable is wild nature, and 'wild' is that which is unmodi?ed by human activity. However, accounts of our attributions of value to the wild often have an aura of elusiveness to them, as if what really matters about nature being wild could not ultimately be captured by words. In an attempt to account for what really matters, I relate our fascination with wild nature to a famous Wittgensteinian quote-'Ethics and Aesthetics are one and the same' (Tractatus 2006a: 28, §6.421)-and inspect the ways in which important dimensions of our attributions of value to wild nature can be elucidated by re?ecting on such cryptic identi?cation. I claim that the experience of wild nature more than any other experience forces on us the adoption of what Wittgenstein called the view sub specie aeternitatis ('through the lens of eternity') leading us to appreciate the miraculous character of anything being the case at all, ourselves included. Accordingly, the value of wild nature lies in its being a most powerful gesture towards the miracle of existence. The experience of wild nature shows us the good of being alive rather than not. This sort of experience is one in which ethics and aesthetics are one and the same. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study presents the findings of research into the effect of the variability of site conditions on their floristic composition providing a basis for the identification of lower phytosociological units. Patches of Arrhenatheretum elatioris described with the assistance of phytosociological surveys conducted using the Braun-Blanquet method were subjected to multi-criteria evaluation. On their basis, the following parameters were determined: ecological and botanical structure, geographic-historical distribution, the structure of the life-groups of the floristic types identified, as well as natural values by the Oswit method and sward fodder value according to Filipek. In order to determine the causes of the floristic variability observed, the following soil conditions were assessed: moisture content, soil reaction and nitrogen content by Ellenberg's indicator method, as well as potassium, magnesium and phosphorus content by the appropriate laboratory methods. Typical forms of Arrhenatheretum elatioris phytocenoses were found to develop on mucky soils in moderately moist sites. Patches of ryegrass occurring in sites with a periodically higher moisture content on organic soils refer to the Alopecuretumpratensis association. On the other hand, the sward of ryegrass meadows developed on dryer, mineral soils was characterised by increased numbers of species characteristic for xerothermic swards from the Festuco-Brometea class and sandy plant communities from the Koelerio glauca-Corynephoretea canescentis. More intensive utilization, primarily-fertilisation, was among the causes of the development of species-poor phytocenoses of low natural value but sward of a good fodder value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic biology makes use of genetic and other materials derived from modern biological life forms to design and construct novel synthetic organisms. Artificial organisms are not constructed from parts of existing biological organisms, but from non-biological materials. Artificial and synthetic organisms are artefactual organisms. Here we are concerned with the non-instrumental value of such organisms. More specifically, we are concerned with the extent to which artefactual organisms have natural value, inherent worth and intrinsic value. Our conclusions are largely supportive of the value of artefactual organisms. However, they do not constitute a comprehensive ethical evaluation of them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jacobsen, R.M., Framstad, E., Sverdrup-Thygeson, A. & Storaunet, K.O. 2020. NINA Rapport 1883. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. I dagens intensivt utnyttede skoglandskap vil trolig verneområder ligge for spredt til alene å kunne ivareta langsiktig overlevelse for tilknyttede arter. Jacobsen, R.M., Framstad, E., Sverdrup-Thygeson, A. & Storaunet, K.O. 2020. The significance of size and diversity of nature types for the natural value of forest areas. A review of knowledge. NINA Report 1883. Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. Proposed criteria for assessing the natural value of forest areas for possible protection include the size of the areas and their diversity of nature types. Objections have been raised against these criteria, mainly claiming that they are not relevant for capturing values associated with special or endangered species and nature types. In this report, we discuss the suitability of size and nature type diversity of potential forest protected areas as criteria for natural value, and summarize relevant knowledge from the scientific literature. There is no general answer as to whether few large or more small areas conserve most species over time. This depends on the characteristics of the species and the ecological network of pro-tected areas, where the distribution of the habitat resources in the landscape relative to the species' dispersal ecology is particularly important. In today's intensively managed forest landscape, protected areas will probably be too scattered to be able to ensure long-term survival for associ-ated species. Several examples in the literature show that specialists, rare species, and species demanding large home ranges often occur more frequently in forest landscapes with less human impact than in natural forest fragments in forest landscapes strongly influenced by intensive for-estry. Larger areas are also more robust against disturbances, where parts of the area can re-main unaffected and maintain a similar species composition as before the disturbance. Hence, natural disturbances such as forest fires can to a greater extent unfold naturally in large areas. Several studies show that increased environmental variation provides a basis for higher species richness, but there are fewer studies where such variation can be linked to the number of nature types. It is also well documented that various species communities are connected to different forest types, often defined by the dominance of different tree species. Some species are also associated with the transitions between habitat types, most often documented for transitions between forest and open landscape. Several aspects of environmental variation are also important for the occurrence of refuges from disturbances such as forest fires or long-term climate change. Such refuges may increase the likelihood of species surviving in an area over time. Thus, there is a basis in the literature for assuming that an increased diversity of nature types will also result in an increased number of species, although there is potentially a trade-off against the amount of each nature type. Based on the literature, forest area size and diversity of nature types can be regarded as relevant criteria for natural value, although these criteria may in some contexts conflict with criteria related specifically to the conservation of endangered species and habitat types. The various criteria for natural value must in any case be weighed against each other in an overall assessment of the natural value of a forest area.

32. Natuurinclusief als ontwerp- en communicatietool

- Abstract

Harm to natural rights of an individual Abstract Findings collected in this rigorosum thesis confirm that functional and sensitive settings of the universal system of private law, which provides the legal protection of values connected naturally with human being against unlawful attacks, is an essential task for every civilized legal environment because the natural values connected with a human are really important. The text suggests that the conception of this legal protective system consisting of three cohesive components, namely the conception of an object of legal protection, civil liability, a list of protective rights), is shaped by findings, which have their origin in legal theory, written laws and case law. At the beginning of this rigorosum thesis I concentrate my attention on the first component of the legal protective system. Due to the elastic range of legal protection exclusively focused on human being as an individual, and as a person of law in the legal sense, it is allowed to try to achieve protection of all natural values of human being, that in the summary create the most personal, the innermost and the most intimate sphere of human being1 . This type of particular values has either a biological or psychological or sociological character. The substantive definition of the interest which is...

The paper aims at assessment of functioning of farms from gminas (municipalities) of high natural values at the background of farms from other gminas in Poland. The gminas for which the Natural and Tourism Value Index (NTVA), established by the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – State Research Institute, amounted to at least 35.6% out of 100% possible to be achieved were considered as gminas of high natural values. The comparative analysis took into account the production potential of farms, production organization, costs incurred, productivity of factors of production, farm income per 1 FWU, share of operating subsidies in farm income and the net investment rate. The analysis was carried out using the data of farms keeping accounting for the Polish FADN in 2015 and data of the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – State Research Institute. It was recognized that farms from areas of high natural values and keeping accounting for the Polish FADN in 2015, for instance, provided payment for the owner’s and his family members’ labour costs at above the parity level and saw possibilities for further development for themselves.

The paper presented landscape and natural values of meadows situated within the Natura 2000 “Ostoja Nietoperzy Gór Sowich” area. Based on the study, 6 plant communities were highlighted. They were characterized by high species richness (from 64 to 109 species in a community) and average values of floristic diversity index H’ (2.1-2.4). The greatest natural value of grassland community was found in Polygono-Trtisetion community - distinctive in its color richness, thanks to the presence in the sward of 109 species of plants, including many colorfully flowering ones. Its natural and landscape value was increased by the presence of species under strict protection (with endangered and rare species among them). All studied grassland communities, located among dark green forests, which dominate in this area, are one the most important element deciding about landscape values.
