Older adults report higher marital satisfaction than younger adults even after negative interactions. The current study examined affect valuation as a potential moderator to explain age‐related differences in the relationship between negative interactions and marital satisfaction. We conducted a 14‐day daily diary study among 66 heterosexual couples (132 participants) aged from 21 to 80 years. At both person and daily levels, we found that valuing negative affect weakened the negative association between negative interactions and marital satisfaction in husbands. The moderating effect of negative affect valuation was stronger in older than younger husbands at the person but not daily level. Valuing positive affect more was associated with a stronger negative association between negative interactions and marital satisfaction in husbands at the person but not daily level. Such effect was again stronger in older than younger husbands. No significant results were found in wives. ABSTRACT Although most cyanobacteria grow in visible light (VL; λ = 400–700 nm), some cyanobacteria can also use far-red light (FRL; λ = 700–800 nm) for oxygenic photosynthesis by performing far-red light photoacclimation. These two types of cyanobacteria can be found in the same environment. However, how they respond to each other remains unknown. Here, we reveal that coculture stresses FRL-using Chlorogloeopsis fritschii PCC 9212 and VL-using Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. No significant growth difference was found in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 between the coculture and the monoculture. Conversely, the growth of Chlorogloeopsis fritschii PCC 9212 was suppressed in VL under coculture. According to transcriptomic analysis, Chlorogloeopsis fritschii PCC 9212 in coculture shows low transcript levels of metabolic activities and high transcript levels of ion transporters, with the differences being more noticeable in VL than in FRL. The transcript levels of stress responses in coculture were likewise higher than in monoculture in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 under FRL. The low transcript level of metabolic activities in coculture or the inhibition of cyanobacterial growth indicates a possible negative interaction between these two cyanobacterial strains.IMPORTANCEThe interaction between two cyanobacterial species is the primary focus of this study. One species harvests visible light, while the other can harvest far-red and visible light. Prior research on cyanobacteria interaction concentrated on its interactions with algal, coral, and fungal species. Interactions between cyanobacterial species were, nevertheless, rarely discussed. Thus, we characterized the interaction between two cyanobacterial species, one capable of photosynthesis using far-red light and the other not. Through experimental and bioinformatic approaches, we demonstrate that when one cyanobacterium thrives under optimal light conditions, it stresses the remaining cyanobacterial species. We contribute to an ecological understanding of these two kinds of cyanobacteria distribution patterns. Cyanobacteria that utilize far-red light probably disperse in environments with limited visible light to avoid competition with other cyanobacteria. From a biotechnological standpoint, this study suggests that the simultaneous cultivation of two cyanobacterial species in large-scale cultivation facilities may reduce the overall biomass yield.

ABSTRACTThe human gut microbiota constitutes a vast and complex community of microorganisms. The myriad of microorganisms present in the intestinal tract exhibits highly intricate interactions, which play a crucial role in maintaining the stability and balance of the gut microbial ecosystem. These interactions, in turn, influence the overall health of the host. The mammalian gut microbes have evolved a wide range of mechanisms to suppress or even eliminate their competitors for nutrients and space. Simultaneously, extensive cooperative interactions exist among different microbes to optimize resource utilization and enhance their own fitness. This review will focus on the competitive mechanisms among members of the gut microorganisms and discuss key modes of actions, including bacterial secretion systems, bacteriocins, membrane vesicles (MVs) etc. Additionally, we will summarize the current knowledge of the often-overlooked positive interactions within the gut microbiota, and showcase representative machineries. This information will serve as a reference for better understanding the complex interactions occurring within the mammalian gut environment. Understanding the interaction dynamics of competition and cooperation within the gut microbiota is crucial to unraveling the ecology of the mammalian gut microbial communities. Targeted interventions aimed at modulating these interactions may offer potential therapeutic strategies for disease conditions.

Heavy elements accumulate rapidly in the soil due to industrial activities and the industrial revolution, which significantly impact the morphology, physiology, and yield of crops. Heavy metal contamination will eventually affect the plant tolerance threshold and cause changes in the plant genome and genetic structure. Changes in the plant genome lead to changes in encoded proteins and protein sequences. Consuming these mutated products can seriously affect human and animal health. Bioremediation is a process that can be applied to reduce the adverse effects of heavy metals in the soil. In this regard, bioremediation using plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) as beneficial living agents can help to neutralize the negative interaction between the plant and the heavy metals. PGPRs suppress the adverse effects of heavy metals and the negative interaction of plant-heavy elements by different mechanisms such as biological adsorption and entrapment of heavy elements in extracellular capsules, reduction of metal ion concentration, and formation of complexes with metal ions inside the cell. BackgroundFine particulate matter (PM2.5), one of the most common air pollutants worldwide, has been associated with many adverse birth outcomes in some studies. Pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is an important indicator of maternal obesity that may also contribute to a wide range of birthweight outcomes. Both PM2.5 and maternal obesity have been found associated with issues on neonatal birthweight respectively, and more attentions and interests are focusing on their combined effect on pregnancy outcomes.PurposeTo explore the modifying effect of pre-pregnancy BMI on the association between gestational PM2.5 and birthweight; to investigate the interactive effect between gestational PM2.5 and pre-pregnancy BMI on birthweight among pregnant women during three trimesters and the whole pregnancy.MethodsThis nationwide cohort study used the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project (NFPHEP) data collected from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2012. A total population of 248,501 Chinese women from 220 counties registered this project. Pre-pregnancy BMI as a common anthropometric examination was collected during preconception investigation, and gestational PM2.5 was derived from a hindcast model for historical PM2.5 estimation from satellite-retrieved aerosol optic depth. Subgroup analysis was conducted to explore a potential modifying effect on the association between PM2.5 and birthweight during pregnancy by four pre-pregnancy BMI subgroups. Interaction analysis by introducing product terms to multivariable linear regression was also used to examine whether there was an interactive relationship between PM2.5 and pre-pregnancy BMI.ResultsTotally, 193,461 participants were included in our study. The average concentration of PM2.5 was 75.33 μg/m3. Higher exposure of PM2.5 during the entire pregnancy was associated with higher birthweight (17.15 g per 10 μg/m3; 95% CI:16.15, 18.17). Each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 during the first, second, and third trimesters was associated with increases in birthweight by 14.93 g (95%CI: 13.96, 15.89), 13.75 g (95% CI: 12.81, 14.69), and 8.79 g (95% CI: 8.09, 9.49), respectively. Higher pre-pregnancy BMI per kg/m2 was associated with an increase of birthweight by 7.012 g (95% CI: 6.121, 7.902). Product terms between PM2.5 and pre-pregnancy BMI were significant for the first, second trimesters, and the entire duration of pregnancy.ConclusionsOur results found both gestational PM2.5 exposure and pre-pregnancy BMI respectively correlated with the increase of birthweight. A negative interaction between pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational PM2.5 was discovered in term of birthweight gain. Avoidance of high-dose exposure to PM2.5 during the early and middle stages of pregnancy and pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity may help prevent high birthweight.

Plant mycorrhization can be achieved by transplanting new seedlings with mycorrhizal nurse plants; however, this method inevitably induces plant interactions. Transplanting nurse plants downwards may prevent light competition among new seedlings and nurse plants in the same pot. We hypothesized that seedling mycorrhization via mycorrhizal provision from plants planted downwards would be a feasible and efficient strategy. We used seedlings cultivated for 6 months after inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as nurse plants, and seedlings cultivated for 1 month without AMF as recipient plants, transplanting one nurse plant and three recipient plants together in one pot. We compared two approaches for cultivating mycorrhizal Broussonetia papyrifera seedlings: planting mycorrhizal nurse plants upwards (M-NU) and downwards (M-ND). We also planted non-mycorrhizal nurse plants upwards (NM-NU) and downwards (NM-ND) as controls. We analyzed growth parameters and the mycorrhizal colonization status of recipient plants at 45, 60, and 75 days after planting (DAP). As expected, the plant growth, gas exchange, and root morphological parameters of recipient plants with mycorrhizal nurse plants were higher than those of recipient plants with non-mycorrhizal nurse plants at 60 and 75 DAP. Furthermore, the AMF colonization status and physiological growth status of M-ND recipient plants were improved compared with M-NU recipient plants. Our results demonstrate that inducing seedling mycorrhization by planting mycorrhizal nurse plants downwards is a feasible strategy for achieving AMF symbiosis while mitigating negative interactions among plants. This article provides information about 27 records of the Caracal Caracal caracal in Uzbekistan, particularly in the Kyzylkum Desert and the Ustyurt Plateau. The data collected between 2011 and 2017 were based on information from literary sources, field research, and interviews with local people. At least 11 individuals of the species were killed intentionally and one was run over by a car. Basic threats to the species in Uzbekistan are negative interactions between herders and Caracal, lack of knowledge about its protected status among local people, and lack of conservation measures. The preconditions for the protection of Caracal are the existence of remote unpopulated areas close to state borders between adjacent countries and socio-economic factors that prompt people to move from rural to urban areas. Caracal habitats are protected in Kyzylkum State Reserve, Saigachiy Landscape Sanctuary, and six wildlife sanctuaries. To conserve Caracal, it is necessary to strengthen the network of protected areas in deserts and raise the awareness of local communities and decision-makers in the national government. It is important to continue research on Caracal and develop a government-approved action plan for its conservation.

Objectives A common mechanism underlying premature morbidity may be accelerated biological aging as reflected by salivary telomere length (STL). This study examined the extent to which social relationships, both positive and negative, can be protective or confer risk relative to biological aging. Method Data from the Health and Retirement Study and multiple regression were used to examine cross-sectional associations between STL, self-reported social support, and negative interaction (e.g. conflict, criticism) with family in a nationally representative sample of African American and non-Hispanic White middle-aged and older adults (N = 4,080). Results Social support from family was associated with shorter STL. Negative interaction with family had no main effect on STL but interactions characterized by high social support and more frequent negative interactions were associated with longer STL. Negative interaction with family was negatively associated with STL for African Americans and Whites but the magnitude of the effect was greater for African Americans. Discussion Study findings highlight the role of social relationships in physiological deterioration among middle-aged and older adults and identify a potential mechanism whereby race is linked to accelerated biological aging. Findings highlight the importance of considering positive and negative aspects of social relationships to understand the consequences of social connections for cellular aging in diverse populations. Understanding the dietary habits of sympatric apex carnivores advances our knowledge of ecological processes and aids their conservation. We compared the diets of the sympatric Snow Leopard Panthera uncia and Grey Wolf Canis lupus using standard microhistological analyses of scats collected from the western complex of Nepal Himalaya. Our study revealed one of the highest recorded contributions of livestock to the diet of top predators (55% for Grey Wolf and 39% for Snow Leopard) and high dietary overlap (0.82) indicating potential exploitative or interference competition. Their diet composition, however, varied significantly based on their consumption of wild and domestic prey. Limitation in data precludes predicting direction and outcome of inter-specific interactions between these predators. Our findings suggest a high rate of negative interaction with humans in the region and plausibly retaliatory killings of these imperilled predators. To ensure the sustained survival of these two apex carnivores, conservation measures should enhance populations of their wild prey species while reducing livestock losses of the local community through preventive and mitigative interventions. Background: The association between the couple relationship and the mothers' and fathers' psychological adjustment to the transition to parenthood has been examined in the literature. However, the direction of effects between these variables has not been extensively explored. This study aimed to assess the direction of effects between mothers' and fathers' positive and negative interactions and anxiety and depression symptoms trajectories over the transition to parenthood.Methods: A sample of 129 couples (N = 258) completed self-report measures of positive and negative interactions, anxiety and depression symptoms at each trimester of pregnancy, at childbirth, and at 3- and 30-months postpartum. Dyadic growth curve models were performed using multilevel modeling.Results: Whereas anxiety and depression showed no moderation effect on positive and negative interactions over time, negative interaction moderated depression from 3- to 30-months postpartum. Mothers and fathers with high negative interaction scores experienced a steeper increase in depression from 3- to 30-months postpartum. Additionally, gender moderated the effect of positive interaction on anxiety from 3- to 30-months postpartum. Fathers with low positive interaction scores experienced an increase in anxiety, whereas fathers with high positive interaction scores and mothers with high or low positive interaction scores did not experience changes in anxiety from 3- to 30-months postpartum.Limitations: Despite the longitudinal aspect of the models, a possible causal relationship need to be taken with caution.Conclusions: Our results suggest that mothers' and fathers' positive and negative interactions affect their anxiety and depression symptoms trajectories: negative interaction raises mothers' and fathers' depression symptoms and positive interaction prevents the increase of fathers' anxiety symptoms over the postpartum period. This study examines the impact of informal social support from family and friends on the well-being of older African Americans. Analyses are based on a nationally representative sample of older African Americans from the National Survey of American Life (n = 837). Three measures of well-being are examined: life satisfaction, happiness and self-esteem. The social support variables include frequency of contact with family and friends, subjective closeness with family and friends, and negative interactions with family. Results indicate that family contact is positively correlated with life satisfaction. Subjective closeness with family is associated with life satisfaction and happiness and both subjective closeness with friends and negative interaction with family are associated with happiness and self-esteem. There are also significant interactions between family closeness and family contact for life satisfaction, as well as friendship closeness and negative interaction with family for happiness. Overall, our study finds that family and friend relationships make unique contributions to the well-being of older African Americans. Qualitative aspects of family and friend support networks (i.e., subjective closeness, negative interactions) are more important than are structural aspects (i.e., frequency of contact). Our analysis verify that relationships with family members can both enhance and be detrimental to well-being. The findings are discussed in relation to prior research on social support and negative interaction and their unique associations with well-being among older African Americans. Background A number of studies have consistently indicated that family support has a powerful impact on older parents' well-being, but little is known about the effects of anticipated support and negative interaction on psychological well-being. The present study attempted to examine the relationships between family support, negative interaction, and psychological well-being in older Thai parents. Methods The sample included 578 elderly parents aged 60 years and older. Multiple regression models were employed to determine whether received support, anticipated support, and negative interaction influence older parents' well-being. Results Findings revealed that greater emotional and instrumental support received from family members and anticipated support were significantly associated with a greater sense of older parents' psychological well-being. However, psychological well-being was lower for those with more negative family interactions. Conclusion The results suggest that filial piety and family solidarity should be considered when developing elder care policy and interventions to promote psychological well-being. This study compared marital satisfaction among three age groups and examined how negative interaction patterns and religiosity relate to marital satisfaction at each age using a sample of Protestants (N = 45,387) diverse in denominations, location, geography, and size. We performed a 1-way ANOVA to compare marital satisfaction among three age groups (younger than 40, 40–59, and 60 and older) and found a U-shape curve with marital satisfaction highest among the youngest group, lowest among middle-age couples, and high among older couples. How multiple types of non-trophic interactions map onto trophic networks in real communities remains largely unknown. We present the first effort, to our knowledge, describing a comprehensive ecological network that includes all known trophic and diverse non-trophic links among >100 coexisting species for the marine rocky intertidal community of the central Chilean coast. Our results suggest that non-trophic interactions exhibit highly nonrandom structures both alone and with respect to food web structure. The occurrence of different types of interactions, relative to all possible links, was well predicted by trophic structure and simple traits of the source and target species. In this community, competition for space and positive interactions related to habitat/refuge provisioning by sessile and/or basal species were by far the most abundant non-trophic interactions. If these patterns are corroborated in other ecosystems, they may suggest potentially important dynamic constraints on the combined architecture of trophic and non-trophic interactions. The nonrandom patterning of non-trophic interactions suggests a path forward for developing a more comprehensive ecological network theory to predict the functioning and resilience of ecological communities. Objective: The purpose of this study is to test three hypotheses involving humility. The first hypothesis specifies that people who are more deeply involved in religion will be more humble than individuals who are not as involved in religion. The second hypothesis predicts that humility will offset the effects of negative interaction in the church on depressed affect scores. The third hypothesis specifies that there will be a positive relationship between age and humility. Methods: The data come from the Religion, Aging, and Health Survey, a nationwide survey of middle-aged and older Christians who attend church on a regular basis (N = 1154). Results: The findings suggest that people who are more committed to their faith tend to be more humble. The results also reveal that negative interaction in the church is greater for people with lower humility scores than individuals with higher humility scores. In contrast, the data indicate that older adults are not more humble than middle-aged people. Conclusions: The findings are noteworthy because they identify a source of resilience that may help middle-aged and older adults cope more effectively with the effects of stress. Background It is well documented that friends' externalizing problems and negative parent-child interactions predict externalizing problems in adolescence, but relatively little is known about the role of siblings. This four-wave, multi-informant study investigated linkages of siblings' externalizing problems and sibling-adolescent negative interactions on adolescents' externalizing problems, while examining and controlling for similar linkages with friends and parents. Methods Questionnaire data on externalizing problems and negative interactions were annually collected from 497 Dutch adolescents ( M = 13.03 years, SD = 0.52, at baseline), as well as their siblings, mothers, fathers, and friends. Results Cross-lagged panel analyses revealed modest unique longitudinal paths from sibling externalizing problems to adolescent externalizing problems, for male and female adolescents, and for same-sex and mixed-sex sibling dyads, but only from older to younger siblings. Moreover, these paths were above and beyond significant paths from mother-adolescent negative interaction and friend externalizing problems to adolescent externalizing problems, 1 year later. No cross-lagged paths existed between sibling-adolescent negative interaction and adolescent externalizing problems. Conclusions Taken together, it appears that especially older sibling externalizing problems may be a unique social risk factor for adolescent externalizing problems, equal in strength to significant parents' and friends' risk factors. Current meta-community theories postulate that the structure of local communities depends on dispersal, environmental filtering, and biotic interactions. However, disentangling the relative effects of these factors in the field and for diverse assemblages is a major challenge. A solution is to address natural but simple communities (i.e. with low numbers of species in few trophic levels), wherein one of these factors is predominant. Here, we analyse the micro-arthropod community of a moss-turf habitat typical of the Antarctic Peninsula region, and test the widely accepted hypothesis that this system is abiotically driven. In the austral summers 2006/7 and 2007/8, we sampled nearly 80 units of moss from four islands in the Argentine Islands. Using variance partitioning, we quantified the relative contribution of: (1) multiple scale spatio-temporal autocorrelation; (2) environmental effects; (3) the island effect. Little variance (1 %) was accounted for by sources 1 (1 %, significant) and 2 (<1 %, not significant). The island effect significantly accounted for the largest amount of variation (8 %). There was a relatively large effect of spatially structured environmental variation (7 %). Null models demonstrated that species co-occurred less frequently than expected by chance, suggesting the prevalence of negative interactions. Our data support the novel hypothesis that negative biotic interactions are the most important structuring force of this micro-arthropod community. The analysed system is a good proxy for more complex communities in terms of taxonomic composition and the functional groups present. A rapidly growing literature indicates that supportive social relationships are associated with better physical and mental health. However, this research further reveals that interaction with others may also be conflicted and unpleasant. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate negative interaction that arises within a social context that is important to many older Mexican Americans (i.e., negative interaction with a member of the clergy). Findings from a nationwide survey of older Mexican Americans indicate that more frequent interpersonal conflict with a member of the clergy is associated with less favorable self-rated health as well as more acute and chronic health conditions. Both PM 2.5 and maternal obesity have been found associated with issues on neonatal birthweight respectively, and more attentions and interests are focusing on their combined effect on pregnancy outcomes., Purpose: To explore the modifying effect of pre-pregnancy BMI on the association between gestational PM 2.5 and birthweight; to investigate the interactive effect between gestational PM 2.5 and pre-pregnancy BMI on birthweight among pregnant women during three trimesters and the whole pregnancy., Methods: This nationwide cohort study used the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project (NFPHEP) data collected from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2012. A total population of 248,501 Chinese women from 220 counties registered this project. Pre-pregnancy BMI as a common anthropometric examination was collected during preconception investigation, and gestational PM 2.5 was derived from a hindcast model for historical PM 2.5 estimation from satellite-retrieved aerosol optic depth. Subgroup analysis was conducted to explore a potential modifying effect on the association between PM 2.5 and birthweight during pregnancy by four pre-pregnancy BMI subgroups. Interaction analysis by introducing product terms to multivariable linear regression was also used to examine whether there was an interactive relationship between PM 2.5 and pre-pregnancy BMI., Results: Totally, 193,461 participants were included in our study. The average concentration of PM 2.5 was 75.33 μg/m 3 . Higher exposure of PM 2.5 during the entire pregnancy was associated with higher birthweight (17.15 g per 10 μg/m3; 95% CI:16.15, 18.17). Each 10 μg/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 during the first, second, and third trimesters was associated with increases in birthweight by 14.93 g (95%CI: 13.96, 15.89), 13.75 g (95% CI: 12.81, 14.69), and 8.79 g (95% CI: 8.09, 9.49), respectively. Higher pre-pregnancy BMI per kg/m 2 was associated with an increase of birthweight by 7.012 g (95% CI: 6.121, 7.902). Product terms between PM 2.5 and pre-pregnancy BMI were significant for the first, second trimesters, and the entire duration of pregnancy., Conclusions: Our results found both gestational PM 2.5 exposure and pre-pregnancy BMI respectively correlated with the increase of birthweight. A negative interaction between pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational PM 2.5 was discovered in term of birthweight gain. Objectives: This study is the first to investigate the relationship between perceived emotional support and negative interaction with family members and suicide ideation and attempts among African American and Caribbean black adults. Method: Cross-sectional epidemiologic data from the National Survey of American Life and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to examine the association between perceived emotional support and negative interaction and suicide behaviors among 3,570 African Americans and 1,621 Caribbean blacks age 18 and older. Results: Multivariate analyses found that perceived emotional support was associated with lower odds of suicide ideation and attempts for African Americans and Caribbean blacks. Negative interaction with family was associated with greater odds of suicide ideation among African Americans and Caribbean blacks. Ethnicity moderated the impact of emotional support and negative interaction on suicide attempts; among Caribbean blacks, those who reported more frequent emotional support from their family had a significantly greater reduced risk for suicide attempts than African Americans. The effect of negative interaction on suicide attempts was also more pronounced for Caribbean blacks compared to African Americans. Discussion: Negative interaction was a risk factor for suicide ideation and emotional support was a protective factor for attempts and ideation. These associations were observed even after controlling for any mental disorder. The findings demonstrate the importance of social relationships as both risk and protective factors for suicide and ethnic differences in suicidal ideation and attempts among black Americans. Data from the National Survey of American Life are used to investigate relationship satisfaction and their relation to extended family relations (i.e., emotional support and negative interaction) among nationally representative samples of African American and Black Caribbean adults. The study contributes to the literature by focusing on two groups of unmarried persons-those who are cohabiting and persons who are unmarried/non-cohabiting-in addition to married persons. Findings indicate that emotional support from extended family is positively associated with relationship satisfaction for married and cohabiting African Americans and Black Caribbeans who are romantically involved. Negative interaction from extended family is associated with lower relationship satisfaction for married, cohabiting, and romantically involved African Americans and for married Black Caribbeans. Differences in the pattern of associations between extended family relations and relationship satisfaction are discussed in terms of the distinctive social and family contexts of Black Caribbean and African American families. Summary Research indicates that positive relationships with fellow church members are associated with better mental health. However, far less research has focused on the relationship between negative interaction with fellow church members and mental health outcomes. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between church-based negative interaction and depressive symptoms with data from a nationwide sample of older Mexican Americans. Statistically significant findings were found for the following core relationships in our study model: (1) older Mexican Americans who encounter negative interaction with fellow church members experience more doubts about their faith; (2) older Mexican Americans who experience more doubts about their faith are more likely to expect transgressors to perform acts of contrition (i.e., make amends); and (3) older Mexican Americans who require transgressors to perform acts of contrition are more likely to experience symptoms of depression. The model organism Pyrococcus furiosus has recently been reported to interact with Methanopyrus kandleri in coculture, suggesting a H2 symbiosis. In the current study we further investigated this hypothesis by growing P. furiosus with four other hyperthermophilic methanogens providing evidence that the organisms did not only exert positive effects (P. furiosus/Methanocaldococcus villosus and P. furiosus/Methanocaldococcus infernus) on each other, but also neutral (P. furiosus/Methanocaldococcus jannaschii) and even inhibitory interactions (P. furiosus/Methanotorris igneus) were detected suggesting interspecies relationships not only based on H2 symbiosis. Using various microscopic techniques we further analyzed the coculture with the highest positive interactions (P. furiosus/ M. villosus) concerning its growth behavior on various surfaces, which turned out to be in stark contrast to the previous reported coculture of P. furiosus/M. kandleri. This communication provides new insights into possible interactions of extremophilic Archaea in cocultures and again raises the question if and how hyperthermophilic Archaea communicate besides metabolic intermediates like H2. growing literature examines the correlates and sequelae of spiritual struggles. Particular attention has been focused on three specific types of such struggles: (a) divine, or troubled relationships with God; (b) interpersonal, or negative social encounters in religious settings; and (c) intrapsychic, or chronic religious doubting. To date, however, this literature has focused primarily on one or another type, leaving open the possibility that these are highly correlated and may tap a single, underlying dimension. Further, because studies have relied mostly on small, specialized samples, it is not clear whether the associations between spiritual struggles and psychological functioning vary across key subgroups in the US population. Using data from the 1998 NORC General Social Survey we address these issues. Findings reveal strong and independent associations between each type of spiritual struggle and psychological distress, and they also show that these patterns are robust across most population subgroups, except for variations by age and marital status. Objectives Both emotional support and negative interaction with family members have been linked to mental health. However, few studies have examined the associations between emotional support and negative interaction and psychiatric disorders in late life. This study investigated the relationship between emotional support and negative interaction on lifetime prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders among older African Americans. Design The analyses utilized the National Survey of American Life. Methods Logistic regression and negative binomial regression analyses were used to examine the effect of emotional support and negative interaction with family members on the prevalence of lifetime DSM-IV mood and anxiety disorders. Participants Data from 786 African Americans aged 55 years and older were used. Measurement The DSM-IV World Mental Health Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WMH-CIDI) was used to assess mental disorders. Three dependent variables were investigated: the prevalence of lifetime mood disorders, the prevalence of lifetime anxiety. Results Multivariate analysis found that emotional support was not associated with any of the three dependent variables. Negative interaction was significantly and positively associated with the odds of having a lifetime mood disorder, a lifetime anxiety disorder and the number of lifetime mood and anxiety disorders. Conclusions This is the first study to investigate the relationships among emotional support, negative interaction with family members and psychiatric disorders among older African Americans. This study examines the effects of negative interaction in church on psychological distress. After outlining a series of theoretical arguments linking negative interaction with health and well-being, relevant hypotheses are tested using longitudinal data from two surveys of the 1997–1999 Presbyterian Panel, a nationwide panel of members and elders (lay leaders) in congregations of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Findings confirm that negative interaction appears to foster or exacerbate distress over the study period. In addition, specific dimensions of social negativity have distinctive effects; the impact of criticisms on distress surface only in cross-sectional models, while the effects of excessive demands emerge only in the longitudinal models. No subgroup variations in these effects are detected. Implications of these findings are discussed with regard to (a) research on religion and health and (b) congregational life, and a number of promising directions for future research are elaborated. The purpose of this study was to see whether 3 types of social support (enacted support, negative interaction, and anticipated support) are associated with change in meaning in life. Data from a nationwide longitudinal survey of older people suggested that greater anticipated support (i.e., the belief that others will provide assistance in the future if needed) is associated with a deeper sense of meaning over time. The same was true with respect to emotional support received from family members and close friends. The authors proposed a model of depressive symptoms in early marriage in which relationship confidence, defined as perceived couple-level efficacy to manage conflicts and maintain a healthy relationship, mediates the effect of negative marital interactions on depressive symptoms. The model was tested in a sample of 139 couples assessed prior to marriage and 1 year later. As predicted, relationship confidence demonstrated simple negative associations with negative marital interaction and depressive symptoms for all participants. Longitudinal path analyses supported the mediational model for women only. In women but not men, negative marital interaction indirectly had an impact on depressive symptoms through the mediator of relationship confidence. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationships among stress, social support, negative interaction, and mental health in a sample of African American men and women between ages 18 and 54 ( N= 591) from the National Comorbidity Study. The study findings indicated that social support decreased the number of depressive symptoms, did not mitigate the effects of stress, and was reduced in response to financial strain. Financial strain and traumatic events were associated with increased negative interaction with relatives and depressive symptoms. The findings verify that stressful and traumatic events have direct influences on levels of depressive symptoms and affect the quality of social interactions and suggest how social interaction processes contribute to mental health. Objective: The purpose of this study was to see whether negative interaction is associated with an increased risk of having heart disease. In the process, an effort was made to see if older people in lower socioeconomic status (SES) groups were more vulnerable to the potentially deleterious effects of interpersonal conflict than upper SES elders. Methods: Interviews were conducted with a nationwide sample of older adults at three points in time. Survey items were administered to assess exposure to negative interaction, SES, and whether study participants had heart disease. Results: The findings reveal that negative interaction is associated with an increased risk of heart disease for lower SES elders only. Moreover, the data suggest that the pernicious effects of negative interaction on heart disease take between 2 and 4 years to become manifest.
