The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a highly destructive agricultural pest. The ability of S. frugiperda to survive and reproduce is widely recognized, but it is also important to consider the role of larval cannibalism as a significant biological trait. Understanding the cannibalistic habits of pests helps to explore the dynamics and evolution of their populations and facilitates the monitoring of insect outbreaks. Therefore, the stages, densities, and intensity of cannibalism in S. frugiperda larvae, as well as the consequences for their development, were investigated under laboratory conditions. Spodoptera frugiperda larvae showed obvious cannibalism after the third instar even in the presence of maize (Zea mays L., Poaceae) leaves; cannibalism was not observed in first instars. In the case of only one cannibal, the percentage of prey consumed by cannibalism decreased with higher prey density, and the predatory functional responses of fourth‐ to sixth‐instar predators to first‐ to third‐instar preys were fitted using the Holling II model. Compared with larvae feeding on maize only, larvae feeding on a diet of maize supplemented with third‐instar conspecifics had a longer developmental duration and a higher body weight, with no significant differences in larval survival, pupation, or eclosion rates. Larvae supplied with conspecifics only, in the absence of maize leaves, generally had a lower body weight than larvae supplied with maize only, although developmental duration was still longer, and longevity and fecundity rates were lower for these larvae. Overall, consuming a small quantity of conspecifics in addition to maize leaves prolonged the developmental duration of larvae and pupae to some extent, increased the body weight, and did not impact the longevity or reproduction of S. frugiperda. However, cannibalism only, without access to maize leaves, had a detrimental effect on adult longevity and reproduction. These findings could serve as a valuable reference for studying the life history of insects that consume agricultural crops and may have potential applications for biological control. The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an important insect pest of maize (Zea mays L., Poaceae). The use of synthetic insecticides to control this pest remains the most popular option amongst growers. Natural insecticides offer a safer alternative to synthetic insecticides for controlling FAW. This study aimed to investigate the lethal and sublethal effects of a calcium carbonate formulation against this invasive insect pest. The tested formulation was a mixture of calcium carbonate (five concentrations), wetting agent and dispersant agent. Four experiments were conducted including a direct contact test, a no‐choice feeding test, a choice feeding test and an oviposition test. The application of the calcium carbonate formulation on maize leaves had a strong anti‐oviposition effect for adult female FAW, but a low‐to‐moderate antifeedant effect on FAW larvae. The growth and development of FAW larvae were only slightly affected by the calcium carbonate formulation in the feeding and the direct contact tests. The lethal effects of the calcium carbonate formulation against FAW larvae were low in direct contact and feeding tests. These results indicate that a calcium carbonate formulation has the potential to be used as the push component in a push–pull strategy for FAW control. Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), has a long association with maize (Zea mays mays L., Poaceae) and is among the crop's most significant pests worldwide. We contrasted the preference for and performance of FAW on three maize cultivars: the Mexican landrace Tuxpeño, the USA inbred B73 and B73‐lox10; B73‐lox10 is deficient in production of jasmonic acid (JA), green leaf volatiles (GLVs) and herbivore‐induced plant volatiles (HIPVs). Female oviposition and neonate colonization preferences were assessed in triple‐choice tests in greenhouse settings. Performance was assessed on the bases of larval, pupal and adult weights, larval and pupal development times, and adult longevity. We expected females to preferentially oviposit on plants on which their offspring performed best, and neonates to randomly colonize plants because they disperse aerially, presumably oriented solely by wind currents. Females preferred to oviposit on Tuxpeño plants, followed by B73‐lox10 and B73 plants, whereas their offspring performed best on B73‐lox10 and poorest on Tuxpeño. In contrast, neonates preferentially colonized plants on which they performed best, B73‐lox10, though initially and transiently they colonized plants on which they performed poorly, B73 and Tuxpeño. Altogether, our results showed that FAW females preferred to oviposit on maize plants on which their offspring's performance was poorest (Tuxpeño), and neonates preferentially colonized plants on which their own performance was best (B73‐lox10), though they initially colonized plants that were detrimental to their performance (Tuxpeño, B73). These results suggested that the ovipositional choices of FAW mothers are uncoupled from their offspring's performance, but newborn offspring rectified their mother's sub‐optimal host plant choice by colonizing plants that enhanced their own performance. Notably, these results also suggested that aerially dispersing (ballooning) FAW larvae do not colonize plants randomly, and that plant volatiles (GLVs, HIPVs) and JA may be relevant to host plant selection by ballooning larvae. Trehalase (TRE) is a key enzyme for degrading trehalose, which plays a vital role in the growth and development of insects. Although validamycin, a compound belonging to a class of efficient antibiotics and fungicides, can control pests by suppressing TRE activities, it remains unknown whether it acts on both trehalose and chitin metabolism in Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a major pest of maize (Zea mays L., Poaceae). This study investigated the changes in trehalose metabolism after validamycin treatment in S. frugiperda and its effects on the downstream chitin synthesis pathway. Compared with the control, S. frugiperda exhibited varying degrees of mortality after treatment with four concentrations of validamycin, showing a dose‐dependent increase in mortality rate. The mortality rates 24 and 48 h after treatment with 0.07 mg μL−1 validamycin were 35.6% and 42.2%, respectively, indicating the effective lethal concentration. Treatment with 0.07 mg μL−1 validamycin led to developmental delay, abnormal molting, and death in S. frugiperda, but it exerted no lasting effects on the survival rate, pupal weight, and phenotype during its subsequent developmental stages. At 24 h after validamycin treatment, TRE1 and TRE2 activities and glucose content decreased significantly, whereas the trehalose content increased significantly. Treatment with validamycin significantly upregulated TRE1 and TRE2 expression after 24 and 48 h and downregulated the mRNA expression of chitin synthase A and B genes. However, after 72 h, chitin content was not significantly affected. Hence, validamycin can destroy the dynamic transformation balance of trehalose and glucose by inhibiting the activities of the two TREs, and further affect the expression of downstream chitin synthase genes. Photosensitizing compounds are eco-friendly promising organic dyes for managing insect pests without facing the risk of resistance. The photodynamic efficacy of four Photosensitizing compounds (rose Bengal, rhodamine B, methylene blue and methyl violet) was monitored against the third larval instar of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval), after exposure to sunlight. The LC50 values of the four compounds; rose Bengal, rhodamine B, methylene blue and methyl violet recorded 0.029 × 10–5, 0.24 × 10–5, 14.69 × 10–5 and 15.59 × 10–5 M, respectively. Therefore, rose Bengal was the most effective compound followed by rhodamine B, Methylene blue and methyl violet. Compared to similar previously documented photosensitizer compounds, these four tested compounds recorded higher mortality percentage. The effect of those compounds on the larval biochemical components was assessed by measuring larval spectral and thermal reflectance. Larvae fed on photosensitizing compounds showed distinct spectral reflectance patterns. Treated larvae had same reflectance manner; which were higher than that of control samples. Along the whole spectrum, the highest reflectance was after 60 min of exposure to sunlight in case of rose Bengal, rhodamine B and methylene blue. Methyl violet reflected sunlight mostly at zero time then the reflectance decreased after 30 min then increased again after 60 min. There was a noticeable absorption of IR wavelengths at ~ 1900, 1400, 1200 and 950 nm in all treated samples. Thermal imaging indicated abnormal larval warmth after treatment. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is among the key invasive pests attacking maize and sorghum, the staple cereals in many countries in Africa. The determination of habitat suitability of invasive species via correlative model is among the priority tasks that provide basic information for achieving sustainable plant protection. In this study, we developed a species distribution model of S. frugiperda and identified the key influencing environmental factors under current and future climatic conditions in Ethiopia via the MaxEnt program. The results showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of the simulated model was 0.856 (±0.010), confirming the good predictive ability of the model. The isothermality and precipitation of the driest month are the most dominant bioclimatic variables with a percentage contribution of 39.4% and 11.6%, respectively, in the model. The percentages of very highly suitable, highly suitable, moderately suitable, low‐suitable, and unsuitable areas were 21.24%, 21.17%, 28.22%, 16.34% and 13.03%, respectively, of the total Ethiopian land mass. From the present to the 2070s, the areas of highly suitable and very highly suitable habitats for S. frugiperda will increase due to global warming. This study noted that the pest was a major threat to maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. Hence, due emphasis should be given to strengthening monitoring and management in a suitable range, which would lessen economic losses due to invasion and ensure agricultural safety. Many species of noctuid moths exhibit long-distance migratory behavior and have an important pollination service function in terrestrial ecosystems. Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) is a globally distributed insect; however, its role in pollination remains underexplored. In this study, the feeding preferences and inter regional pollination of S. litura adults were explored. We conducted pollen analysis on 1253 S. litura migrants captured from 2018 to 2021 on Beihuangcheng Island in the Bohai Strait of China, which is located in the East Asian insect migration path. The results show that an average of 51.1% of S. litura migrants carry plant pollen each year, and the carrying rate shows fluctuations based on sex, year, and season. By combining morphological identification and DNA barcoding, pollen species were identified from 40 species of plants, representing 21 families and 26 genera, mainly from angiosperms of Dicotyledoneae, with Asteraceae, Apocynaceae, and Amaranthaceae being the dominant taxa. The geographical distribution range of Chrysanthemum zawadskii and Adenophora trachelioides and a migration trajectory simulation analysis indicate that S. litura predominantly migrate from Liaoning Province in Northeast China to North China over the Bohai Sea in autumn. These findings indicate the potential pollination activities of S. litura in North China and Northeast China, enriching our understanding of the interaction between S. litura and the plants it pollinates. This study reviews the genus Arctelene Kirti & Gill, 2008, from India, utilizing a museum collection housed at NZCZSI Kolkata, supplemented by fresh collections made between 2015 and 2023. The examination of specimens related to the Asura/Miltochrista complex led to the discovery of two new species: Arctelene brevisvalvasp. nov. from Ponda, Goa (Western Ghats, India) and Arctelene rajbanshisp. nov. from Panijhora, West Bengal (Terai Doors). Detailed illustrations of the adults and genital capsules of the new species are provided, along with diagnosis with closely related congeners, including Arctelene rubricosa (Moore, 1878), Arctelene arcuata (Moore, 1882), Arctelene rufescens Kirti & Gill, 2008, and Arctelene neouncodes Kirti & Singh, 2016. The presence of Telenomus remus Nixon, a scelionid egg parasitoid of noctuids, including the fall army worm (Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith)) in Việt Nam and Lao PDR is reported. Records suggest that T. remus originated in Malesia, a region encompassing Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and northern Australasia. It subsequently spread more widely in Indochina and southern East Asia where its presence appears to have been overlooked due to the relatively low economic importance of hosts other than the recently introduced S. frugiperda, low levels of parasitism of some hosts, limited resources for surveys, and inadequate support within the region for the identification of taxa. Spread of the parasitoid may have been associated with phoresy and natural dispersal of hosts, with or without wind assistance, and movement of noctuid- and pyralid-infested plants by humans over land and sea. Summary: Recent studies show that nocturnal pollinators may be more important to ecosystem function and food production than is currently appreciated. Here, we describe an agricultural field study of pyrethrum (Tanacetum cinerariifolium) flower pollination. Pyrethrum is genetically self‐incompatible and thus is reliant on pollinators for seed set. Our pollinator exclusion experiment showed that nocturnal insects, particularly moths, significantly contribute to seed set and quality.We discovered that the most abundant floral volatile, the sesquiterpene (−)‐germacrene D (GD), is key in attracting the noctuid moths Peridroma saucia and Helicoverpa armigera. Germacrene D synthase (GDS) gene expression regulates the specific GD production and accumulation in flowers, which, in contrast to related species, lose the habit of closing at night.We did observe that female moths also oviposited on pyrethrum leaves and flower peduncles, but found that only a small fraction of those eggs hatched. Larvae were severely stunted in development, most likely due to the presence of pyrethrin defense compounds.This example of exploitative mutualism, which blocks the reproductive success of the moth pollinator and depends on nocturnal interactions, is placed into an ecological context to explain why it may have developed. The biological control of pests and diseases in Brazilian crops has increased substantially, and the large-scale multiplication of microorganisms, a practice known as "On Farm", is now being used by farmers. In this study, we aimed to produce and evaluate the quality of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki strain HD-1 in "On Farm" biofactories under three aeration rates (0.2, 0.5 and 0.8 air volume/volume of medium/min) (vvm), with regard to the production of endospores and crystals, contaminants, and to calculate the lethal concentration 50 (LC50) against Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. After 48 h, the number of viable spores differed significantly between 0.2 (5.75 × 107), 0.5 (1.33 × 108) and 0.8 (5.40 × 108) vvm. The culture media did not show enough selectivity. A significant difference was observed for the LC50 calculated for 0.2 vvm (7.06 × 104), 0.5 vvm (2.07 × 104), 0.8 vvm (4.40 × 103), and the commercial product (3.79 × 103). The results of this study showed that the aeration rate affects the multiplication efficiency of B. thuringiensis in biofactories. In addition, post-process quality control analyses found no pathogenic contamination, reinforcing the safety and viability of the production process. The 0.8 vvm rate resulted in the greater production of spores and crystals, and statistically similar results to the commercial product for the control of S. frugiperda. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The female sex pheromone of Grammodes geometrica (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Erebinae) was identified as a 2:100:4 mixture of (3Z,6Z,9Z)-3,6,9-icosatriene (T20), (3Z,6Z,9Z)-3,6,9-henicosatriene (T21), and (3Z,6Z,9Z)-3,6,9-tricosatriene (T23) through chemical and electrophysiological analyses of female gland extracts. T23 is a novel sex pheromone component in Erebinae species. Field trapping tests demonstrated optimal male captures in attractant-baited traps when using a 2:100:4 blend of T20, T21 and T23, with a significant decrease in captures observed when T20 or T23 were removed from the full blend. Traps were set in early August, but males began to be captured in early September. The seasonal prevalence showed a bimodal peak, occurring on September 11 and October 9. Biological control is an effective and sustainable method of integrated pest management. Microplitis manilae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a common internal parasitoid wasp of the order Lepidoptera. To determine a suitable host species for the reproduction of parasitoids, it is essential to assess host suitability and parasitic potential of the parasitized pests. Herein, we investigated host selection and exploitation of M. manilae. We evaluated the parasitic efficacy of M. manilae in 4 pest species in the Spodoptera and Mythimna genera of the Noctuidae family. The results indicated that the parasitism rate of M. manilae on 3 species in the Spodoptera genus is higher than on Mythimna separata in the Mythimna genus, with M. manilae exhibiting a higher parasitism rate and shorter development duration on Spodoptera litura compared to other species. The parasitism rate for 1st instars hosts was 86.67 ± 0.04%, while the development duration was 14.1 ± 0.03 days. However, when parasitizing the 3rd instar of Spodoptera frugiperda , parasitoids showed a higher sex ratio, of 0.71 ± 0.05. Additionally, M. manilae had parasitic effect on M. separata , providing a new choice for its parasitism. The results identify the optimal host, which could enhance and reproduction rate and survival rate of M. manilae , thus facilitating their large-scale propagation. Understanding the parasitic effects of M. manilae on pests can further its field application, also plays a major role in promoting the development of biological control technologies and sustainable agricultural production. The invasive fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda , is a polyphagous pest that significantly threatens crops worldwide. FAW may undergo adaptation, enhancing its ability to infect specific plant hosts. However, there is limited knowledge on this topic. After 8 generations of constant rearing on peanut leaves, the performance and enzyme activities of FAW were investigated in this study. Compared to FAW fed on the peanut cultivars 'Fuhua 8' and 'Quanhonghua 1' for 2 generations, those grown on leaves for 5 to 8 generations had significantly shorter pre-adult development times and total preoviposition periods. Fecundity also increased significantly, resulting in an overall improvement in population fitness as measured by demographic parameters. However, the F2 generation of FAW fed on corn leaves outperformed the F8 generation of FAW fed on peanut leaves. In the F2 generation, the FAW peanut population exhibited 30–55% supernumerary larval molts, which decreased substantially in the F5 and F8 generations. Notably, supernumerary larval molts displayed pupation and emergence rates comparable to normal larvae, regardless of the peanut cultivar or rearing generation. The activities of lipase and acetylcholinesterase increased significantly from the F2 to F8 generations, showing substantial negative and positive correlations with larval development time and fecundity, respectively. In conclusion, FAW demonstrated inferior performance on peanut leaves compared to corn leaves, despite its performance was significantly improved after 5 to 8 generations of acclimation. The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith; Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a notorious invasive insect pest. It is very important to understand the foraging behavior of this pest to develop more effective lures to monitor the immigration of this pest. In this study, the use of visual and olfactory cues in the foraging behavior of S. frugiperda was investigated through an attraction experiment in which color (produced from 8 different colored artificial flowers), odor (produced from honey water), and odorous color (produced from artificial flowers supplemented with honey water) were used. When we used 8 different colors to elicit adult responses, S. frugiperda showed a significant color preference despite limited activity (i.e. the total number of visits to the attractant), with black being the most preferred color, followed by orange preferred by both sexes and blue and green preferred only by females. When honey water was used as an attractant, S. frugiperda had relatively greater odor activity than color activity. When we sprayed the artificial flowers with honey, S. frugiperda showed even greater activity in terms of odor color than in terms of color or odor. Compared with male S. frugiperda , female adult S. frugiperda presented greater activity in response to all types of attractants. These findings suggest that S. frugiperda adults rely primarily on olfaction for foraging, with vision as a secondary sense, and that the combined use of olfactory and visual cues increases foraging efficiency. The spongy moth, Lymantria dispar L. (Lepidoptera: Eribidae), is a serious pest of deciduous forests and causes widespread defoliation. Despite this, few studies have evaluated the wide-ranging surveillance of adult male L. dispar using different types of pheromone-baited traps. We evaluated the effect of trap type on captures of adult male L. dispar at 18 sites in Europe; two in Slovenia, two in Spain, 12 in Greece, one in Hungary, and one in Croatia. Seven different trap types, G trap and eGymer 1–6, were evaluated June–September 2022 and 2023. Generally, captures of L. dispar started in late June and lasted until mid-August. Trap type affected captures. The G trap (consisting of a dark brown plastic rectangular parallel-piped body) caught significantly more L. dispar than other trap types in many instances, particularly when the peak of the flight period occurred. Captures of L. dispar in pairs of different trap types showed a significant correlation in trap catch in most investigations, suggesting that most detected comparable fluctuations in L. dispar abundance. Exploring the utilization of drones for field applications of entomopathogenic fungus as a dry powder marks a pioneering effort in pest management. In this study, Metarhizium rileyi isolates CG381 and CG1153 were utilized to target third instar larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda in maize and Chrysodeixis includens in soybean field plots, respectively. A drone, calibrated to dispense the equivalent of 50 g of non-formulated conidia per hectare (approximately 5 × 1012 con ha−1), was utilized, with untreated plots and plots treated with an equivalent dose using a CO2-powered backpack sprayer serving as controls. The application of M. rileyi via spraying exhibited uniformity with minimal drift, with 88% of the expected conidia per unit area collected by conidial collectors. However, the recovery rates after dusting on soybean and maize plants were estimated to be only 3.4 and 16.2%, respectively, with less uniform distribution. Despite this, infection rates in dusted plots were comparable to those achieved with conventional spraying, ranging from 35–48% for S. frugiperda to 29–34% for C. includens. Laboratory susceptibility assays revealed higher infection levels when first instar larvae were fed M. rileyi-dusted leaves, emphasizing the importance of accurate pest monitoring for optimal timing of drone applications or other methods. While adjustments are necessary to improve both conidia deposition and operational efficiency, our findings demonstrate the significant potential of drone-based conidial powder release for caterpillar management in soybean and maize fields. Transgenic crops producing crystalline (Cry) proteins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been used extensively to control some major crop pests. However, many populations of the noctuid moth Helicoverpa zea, one of the most important crop pests in the United States, have evolved practical resistance to several Cry proteins including Cry1Ac. Although mutations in single genes that confer resistance to Cry proteins have been identified in lab-selected and gene-edited strains of H. zea and other lepidopteran pests, the genetic basis of field-evolved resistance to Cry proteins in H. zea has remained elusive. We used a genomic approach to analyze the genetic basis of field-evolved resistance to Cry1Ac in 937 H. zea derived from 17 sites in seven states of the southern United States. We found evidence for extensive gene flow among all populations studied. Field-evolved resistance was not associated with mutations in 20 single candidate genes previously implicated in resistance or susceptibility to Cry proteins in H. zea or other lepidopterans. Instead, resistance in field samples was associated with increased copy number of a cluster of nine trypsin genes. However, trypsin gene amplification occurred in a susceptible sample and not in all resistant samples, implying that this amplification does not always confer resistance and mutations in other genes also contribute to field-evolved resistance to Cry1Ac in H. zea. The mismatch between lab-generated and field-evolved resistance in H. zea is unlike other cases of Bt resistance and reflects challenges for managing this pest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, the presence of bean pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera Hubner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), poses a significant threat to beans, causing quantitative and qualitative damage each year. To evaluate the effect of sowing date and cultivar on bean pod borer damage in Markazi Province, Iran. A split plot experiment design based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications and nine treatments was conducted over two crop years (2020‐2021 and 2021‐2022). The main plot had three sowing dates: 15 days earlier than the conventional date (early sowing), the conventional date, and 15 days later than the conventional date (late sowing). The subplot focused on three pinto bean cultivars: "Ghaffar," "Talash," and, "Sadri." General, "Sadri" showed the highest mean of the number of larvae in per plant (0.46–0.53) and infection rate, while "Ghaffar" had the lowest mean of number of larvae (0.24–0.30) in both years. The mean of damaged pods was highest (0.42–0.61) in "Sadri" for both years, but lowest in "Ghaffar" (0.27–0.3) for both years. Similarly, the mean of the highest (4.08–4.96) and the lowest (1.54–1.79) damage percentages were observed in "Sadri" and "Ghaffar," respectively, in both years. "Sadri" had the highest mean number of damaged grains (0.58–0.61) in both years, with "Talash" having the lowest (0.30) in the first year and "Ghaffar" (0.30) in the second year. Moreover, despite the higher pest population and damage, early sowing (May 20) resulted in higher yields in both years. The highest yield was associated to early‐sown "Ghaffar" plants whose yield was 3581.00 ± 225.43 kg/ha in the first year and 3571.0 ± 223.40 kg/ha in the second year. Drepanidae are one of the families of Lepidoptera that have received little attention in terms of phylogenetic studies. This study aims to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships among Drepanidae using eleven molecular markers, totalling more than 7,500 bp. A phylogenetic tree based on 37 species of Drepanidae was inferred, including 21 of the 22 European drepanids. The results of this study support monophyly of all four subfamilies of Drepanidae. Oretinae and Drepaninae were recovered as sister groups forming one of the two main clades of Drepanidae, whereas Cyclidiinae and Thyatirinae belong to the other clade. This analysis demonstrates that hooked wingtips, a characteristic feature of the Drepaninae + Oretinae lineage, have disappeared repeatedly in the course of evolution. All "winter moths" among the drepanids, i.e. species characterized by their fl ight period being very early in spring form a distinct well-supported clade within the subfamily Thyatirinae. Moreover, all studied thyatirine genera that are characterized by pink or orange blotches on the forewings also belong to one statistically well-supported clade. The phylogenetic framework presented enhances our understanding of the diversifi cation of Drepanidae and provides the groundwork for future taxonomic and evolutionary studies. Background: Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a key agricultural pest, impacts a broad spectrum of crop species, such as cotton, maize, rice, sorghum, and a range of vegetables. Chemical pesticides and transgenic maize are commonly used to protect crops against this major pest. However, biological control offers a safer and more sustainable solution for long-term FAW management. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF), a substitute for synthetic insecticides, have been proven to be an effective biocontrol agent for managing pest populations. The present study objective is to isolate and identify the EPF, Purpureocillium lilacinum from soil using morphological and molecular techniques and evaluate its pathogenicity against FAW eggs and various larval stages under different spore concentrations. Results: The micro-morphological characteristics fluctuated in growth behavior, appearance, and color under diverse growth media and temperatures. Molecular analysis, which involved constructing a phylogenetic tree from ITS and TEF gene regions, confirmed that PT-02 was P. lilacinum. The pathogenicity of the fungus was tested on FAW eggs, neonates, and larvae at multiple concentrations (1 × 108, 1 × 107, and 1 × 106 spores/ml), resulting in variation mortality. The egg mortality rate at 1 × 108, 1 × 107, and 1 × 106 spores/ml was 98, 98 and 96%, respectively. The neonate mortality rate was 100%, while first and second instars larvae mortality ranged from 10–36% across three concentrations, seven days after treatment (DAT). The median lethal concentration (LC50) values of P. lilacinum PT-02 against FAW eggs, first and second instars, were 3.02 × 107, 1.38 × 108, and 2.56 × 108 spore/ml, respectively. Conclusions: The findings revealed that the native strain of P. lilacinum exhibited strong virulence against FAW, suggesting its potential use as an effective biocontrol agent for managing field pest populations. Background: Control techniques using biological control agents such as Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin have the advantage of not showing any negative impacts on environmental health and safety issues. This study used isolates from B. bassiana collection from Laboratory of Pest Monitoring belonging to Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture (LPHP) in Central Java which showed potential in controlling target pest. The problems that still occur are the lack of facilities and infrastructure and the lack of quality testing of collection isolates in LPHP, so that the isolate identification process is still carried out in simple method, and bioassay testing on the fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) as a target pest, is not commonly conducted. The results of bioassay testing can be used to determine the potential of a biological agent to control target pest. Result: The two DNA extraction methods showed different results regarding DNA concentration and purity values, but both methods were good and could be used to amplify DNA using PCR. The DNA band was amplified at 500–600 bp using primers ITS 1 and ITS 4. The results of molecular analysis showed that the four isolates of B. bassiana from Central Java were found in the same clade as B. bassiana from South Sumatra, Dhaka, and Oromia, where these isolates showed similar similarities descended from a common ancestor. Genetically, B. bassiana isolates from Central Java show more genetic similarities to B. bassiana isolates from South Sumatra, Indonesia. Quality testing was carried out by calculating the density and germination ability values for LPHP isolates from Sukoharjo (Sukoharjo isolate), Temanggung (Purworejo isolate), and Banyumas (Banyumas and Cilacap isolate), which showed varying results. The bioassay test used three isolates, namely B. bassiana from Sukoharjo, Banyumas, and Cilacap, which were selected based on density values, germination ability, and molecular analysis. The ability to cause death of the three isolates against S. frugiperda showed different results where the isolate from Sukoharjo, Banyumas, and Cilacap caused mortality of 60, 40, and 60%, and the LC50 value of each isolate was 3.3 × 106, 1.3 × 107, and 3.5 × 107 conidia ml−1, respectively. Conclusion: Morphological identification by macroscopic, microscopic, and molecular analysis showed that the isolate from the LPHP collection in Central Java, Indonesia, was B. bassiana. Genetically, the four isolates showed similar characteristics to isolates from South Sumatra, Indonesia. In Brazil, the common earwig Doru luteipes (Scudder) (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) is considered an important biocontrol agent for the maize crop, consuming the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) eggs and caterpillars from 1st to the 3rd instar. Despite this, several aspects of the interaction between these species have not yet been studied. We aim to evaluate the non‐consumptive effects of earwigs on the oviposition of moths, the earwig's predatory preference between eggs and neonates and its functional response to S. frugiperda eggs. In no‐choice tests between plants with or without the presence of the predator, S. frugiperda moths deposited a smaller number of eggs on plants with risk of predation. In choice‐based tests, earwigs initially attacked newborn caterpillars, but preferred to feed on eggs. Males and females fed more on eggs with increasing supply density and consumption was adjusted to the type II functional response curve. D. luteipes males were more efficient predators than females when exposed to higher egg densities. These findings clarify aspects of the predatory role of D. luteipes on S. frugiperda that had not yet been addressed and suggest that the earwig has potential for impacting the colonization and population growth of S. frugiperda in maize crops, if conditions are favourable to its early arrival. Simple Summary: Lymantria xylina Swinhoe (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), a moth regulated as a potential invasive species by countries of the North American Plant Protection Organization (NAPPO), threatens coastal forests in Fuzhou, China. This insect spends most of its adult life focused on reproduction and flight, which are crucial for its survival and spread. We studied how these moths emerge from their cocoons, mate, lay eggs, and fly towards light. By understanding these behaviors, we can better predict how they might spread to new areas, and develop strategies to control their populations. This research provides valuable insights into the biology of this potentially invasive insect. The biological characteristics of Lymantria xylina Swinhoe (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), a moth that threatens coastal forests in Fuzhou, China, are closely linked to its spread risk. To characterize these traits, we primarily investigated emergence, reproductive, and flight behaviors. Our findings show that females typically emerge, mate, and copulate during specific times of day. The peak hours of emergence, courtship, and copulation are 13:00–14:00, 19:00–21:00, and around 0:00, respectively. The starting time of oviposition was concentrated before dawn and during the daytime. They preferentially lay eggs on columnar objects, including artificial ones. On average, females laid 361 eggs, lived for 4.5 days, and weighed 0.74 g. Non-ovipositing females were observed to fly for short distances, especially during the evening. Field observations suggest that these females can potentially travel up to 184.5 m in total and 34.5 m continuously. While this indicates a theoretical risk of long-distance dispersal, our findings suggest that the overall risk is limited. Dietary generalist herbivorous insects are widespread and often occur in a variety of environments. Across their geographic range, herbivorous insects may encounter variable plant traits as they feed on high‐quality or low‐quality plants. Herbivorous insect larvae experience both bottom‐up (host plant) and top‐down (parasitoid) factors that affect survival. Host plant quality may affect larval growth and survival in that larvae feeding on low‐quality plants often suffer reduced fitness. However, herbivores on different host plants are also subject to different levels of parasitism. High‐quality plants confer stronger larval performance (higher survival, more offspring), but larvae may also face higher parasitism. In some herbivore species, diet mediates larval immune response. The generalist insect herbivore fall webworm (FW), Hyphantria cunea Drury (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), is a moth native to North America, and its larvae have considerable variance in their performance when reared on different host plants. We investigated whether diet affects the immune response in FW larvae when they are reared on different host plant species known to vary in food quality. We measured immune response by melanization of a nylon filament. We found significant differences in immune response across host plants, indicating that diet mediates immune response in FW larvae. Knowledge of insect dispersal and long-distance migratory flight capacity and patterns represent key factors needed for risk assessment of invasive pest species, insecticide resistance management, and more effective pest control. Having operative tools to both mark and track insect pest movement is therefore critical to achieving such goals. Here, we describe a new procedure for marking Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), one of the most economically important crop pests in the United States. Adult H. zea moths were effectively marked using the liquid fluorophore cartax green, a persistent UV-fluorescent pigment, both directly by topical application and indirectly by briefly submerging pupae in the marking solution prior to adult emergence. Regardless of the application method, the cartax mark was retained on the moths throughout their entire adult lifespan. No mortality differences were observed between cartax green-marked and water-marked (control) moths. Additionally, using rotary flight mills, we found no significant differences in several flight parameters, including total number of flights, flight speeds, flight distances, or flight durations between unmarked and cartax-marked moths. Under laboratory conditions, we did observe the lateral transfer of different colored fluorophores between moths, indicating that undesirable marking could potentially occur. Moreover, we found that not all fluorophores were equally retained on H. zea moths, with cartax green remaining intact on moths longer than did a corresponding magenta fluorophore. The results show that cartax green fluorophore could be a practical marker for H. zea and other holometabolous species targeted for large-scale mark-release-recapture research. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a global pest that feeds on > 350 plant species and causes major yield loses. Variation in the responses of S. frugiperda males to female sex pheromone compounds affects the detection, monitoring and management of the pest. We determined geographic variation in the responses of S. frugiperda males to four different doses of synthetic sex pheromone compounds using a gas chromatography-electroantennogram detector (GC-EAD). Furthermore, we disentangled regional populations into C- and R- mitotypes via molecular analysis of the cytochrome oxidase I gene, and measured their responses to the compounds. When comparing responses of males from Florida, Benin, Nigeria and Kenya, we found some regional differences in the responses of S. frugiperda males to the major compound, Z9-14:OAc and minor component Z9-12:OAc. However, we found no differences in male responses between the different African countries. All males showed significantly higher antennal responses to Z7-12:OAc than to E7-12:OAc. When comparing the mitotypes, we found that Florida R-type males showed higher responses to Z9-14:OAc, Z7-12:OAc and Z9-12:OAc than Benin R-type males, while C-type males from both regions responded equally to Z7-12:OAc. In addition, Florida R-type males showed higher responses to E7-12:OAc than Florida C-type males. Our study thus shows some differential physiological responses of S. frugiperda males towards the known sex pheromone compounds, including E7-12:OAc, but mostly in the different mitotypes. The bogong moth, Agrotis infusa, an endemic noctuid moth of Australia, is known for its extensive long‐distance movement and summer aestivation in the Australian Alps. Recent studies have focused on moth activity in the Alps, but there are limited data for other regions. This study aims to build on the current understanding of bogong moth movement and breeding patterns using unpublished historical data across eastern Australia. We analysed historical data from moth traps in Victoria, New South Wales (NSW) and South Australia (SA) from the 1960s to early 1990s. The study employed the HYSPLIT model for trajectory analysis of moth flight paths and DARABUG2 for phenological modelling. We examined moth catches across different seasons to infer movement patterns, breeding sources and over‐summering activity. Our findings question several long‐standing assumptions about the spatial ecology of the bogong moth. The trajectory analysis suggests that many aspects of A. infusa movement can be explained via dynamic migration, without fully relying on inherent navigation abilities. Important breeding areas may be beyond the self‐mulching clays of NSW and southern Queensland and include far western NSW, south and central SA and southern Victoria. Substantial moth activity during summer in many traps suggests alternative over‐summering strategies including local breeding or even aestivation in areas other than the Alps. Furthermore, the autumn and winter data imply return migrations from diverse source areas and potential local breeding, expanding the understanding of the moth's life cycle beyond a univoltine pattern. In conclusion, the bogong moth appears to exhibit a more complex and adaptable migration and breeding strategy than previously understood, utilising a range of habitats across eastern Australia for breeding and possibly aestivation. This underscores the need for a revised understanding of bogong moth ecology, which is crucial for its conservation and management, especially considering its recent classification as 'Endangered' on the IUCN Red List. The destructive lepidopteran pest, fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) showed resistance to various groups of insecticides. This necessity is taking priority by identifying FAW's preferred hosts and this study primarily focused on assessing the impact of different host plants and an artificial diet composed of chickpea powder, wheat germ and corn flour on various nutritional indices and biotic potential parameters of the FAW under laboratory conditions at the Department of Entomology, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Udaipur. BACKGROUND: Transgenic Bt technology in soybean, with plants expressing Cry1Ac, has been adopted as an insect pest management tool. It was first adopted in large areas of South America and Asia in 2013. The risk of resistance in target pests to this technology demands insect resistance management (IRM) programs. In Brazil, a structured refuge (area of non‐Bt soybean) planted adjacent to the Bt soybean crop has been an important IRM recommendation, particularly for the primary lepidopteran defoliators Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) and Chrysodeixis includens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The overall goal of this study was to validate IRM recommendations to Bt soybean. The objectives were to document the impact of soybean phenology, cultivar choice and non‐Bt soybean defoliation on moth oviposition. In addition, a mark‐release‐recapture study estimated the dispersal capacity of these species. Five field experiments per species were performed for 3 years. RESULTS: Our results revealed an increase in A. gemmatalis and C. includens oviposition, respectively, on Bt plants as a consequence of the difference in plant growth stage at the time of oviposition. Defoliation of non‐Bt plants significantly increased the oviposition preference of both moth species for Bt plants. The mark‐release‐recapture experiment indicated an average dispersal distance of ~300 m from the release point for A. gemmatalis, with maximum recapture at 1000 m. CONCLUSION: Overall, our findings emphasize the importance of planting synchronization of Bt soybean and the structured refuge. In addition, when operational aspects in large soybean areas challenge this recommendation, the priority should be for planting the refuge area first. Spodoptera frugiperda damages crops around the world and has developed resistance to many pesticides. Beauveria bassiana, a fungus that is harmless to humans and the environment, is widely used in pest control. In our study, differentially expressed genes between S. frugiperda larvae, both exposed and unexposed, to B. bassiana were analyzed by transcriptome sequencing. More than 160 Gb of clean data were obtained, and 2767 and 2892 DEGs were identified in LH36vsCK36 and LH144vsCK144, respectively. To explore the roles of glycometabolism and antioxidation-related enzyme genes in S. frugiperda against B. bassiana infection, the expression patterns of those genes when under attack from B. bassiana were analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR. The results of enzyme activity experiments revealed that S. frugiperda larvae exposed to B. bassiana could upregulate these genes to produce more enzymes related to the maintainance of normal glucose metabolism, as well as regulate the expression of detoxification and antioxidant factors to enhance the larvae's detoxification and antioxidant capacity. The result implied that glycometabolism and antioxidation-related enzymes and genes played critical roles in the antifungal immune process of S. frugiperda larvae. This study enhances our understanding of the molecular mechanisms related to regulation of metabolism and provides a basis for exploring new methods to combat antifungal resistance in S. frugiperda.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a devastating invasive pest recently introduced in India in 2018. The fall armyworm infestation has significantly impacted maize cultivation in the country. Identifying the host plant volatiles (kairomones) that are attractive to S. frugiperda from its highly preferred host plant, i.e. maize will help developing eco-friendly management strategies against this nefarious pest. Gas chromatography electroantennogram detector (GC-EAD) analysis revealed that a total of 18 compounds in maize headspace volatiles and 17 in maize leaf extract elicited an antennal response in female moths of S. frugiperda. Olfactometer bioassays of GC-EAD active plant volatile compounds revealed that heptanoic acid, 2,5-ditert butyl-1,4-benzoquinone and n-hexadecane were the most preferred plant volatile compounds and 50: 50 ratio blend of heptanoic acid and 2,5-ditert butyl-1,4-benzoquinone was found to be the most attractive kairomone blend for S. frugiperda. The family Noctuidae represents the majority of moth species attracted to light traps at night, with approximately 12,000 species identified worldwide. In Egypt, Noctuidae is represented by 206 species, many of which are pests affecting field crops, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. This study is concerned with 25 species of noctuid moths from family Noctuidae (Lepidoptera). The specimens were collected by light trap operated at the experimental research station of the Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria University, at Abis district (31.21743, 29.98271). The adults of each species were spread and pinned to help in recording the general appearance. Additionally, some specimens were dissected to prepare slides of male and female genitalia, while wing patterns were also examined as critical taxonomic features these species were classified into eight subfamilies (Amphyprinae, Agrotinae, Hadeninae, Heliothinae, Acontinae, Plusiinae, Catocalinae and Chleophorinae). Taxonomical keys were restricted on the male and female genitalia. The larvae of certain species in the Noctuidae family cause significant economic damage annually. Due to the importance of this group, specimens of the subfamily Noctuinae, specifically from the tribe Leucaniini, collected from the Fars, Ilam, Kerman and Khuzestan provinces were studied. As a result, among the nine identified and studied species from the genera Mythimna and Leucania, four species from Khuzestan province, three species from Ilam province and one species from Fars province were registered as new provincial records. Additionally, the distribution of Leucania (Leucania) herrichii Herrich-Schäffer, 1849 was confirmed for the first time in Iran. The migratory fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith), has become an important agricultural pest worldwide. In this study, a comparative analysis of the cannibalistic behavior of S. frugiperda larvae in different instar stages was carried out. The predation function of S. frugiperda and the effects of cannibalism on the development of S. frugiperda were assessed based on the Holling functional model and two-sex life tables, respectively. The functional response results reflected that the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th instar larvae of S. frugiperda exhibited theoretical maximum predation values of 82.89, 83.39, 110.52 and 111.2, respectively. According to observations of the development of S. frugiperda under three treatments, S. frugiperda completed its life cycle in the control and cannibal groups but not in the only cannibal group. The larval and pupal developmental duration in the control group and the cannibal group were significantly different. S. frugiperda in the cannibal group had the shortest adult period (5.82 d) and the lightest pupal weight (0.1387 g); the survival rate in the cannibal group was lower than that in the control group. Significant differences were observed in the mean fecundity of females, with the largest number of eggs (1075.06 eggs) laid by S. frugiperda in the control group. S. frugiperda in the control group had the highest intrinsic rate of increase (r), net reproductive rate (R0) and finite rate of increase (λ). On March 2019 a severe flood episode inundated large agricultural areas of Golestan province, in northern Iran. In this study, we assessed the impacts of the flooding episode on cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). To do so, a network of pheromone-bait traps distributed throughout Golestan was installed and used to weekly record moth captures from May to September. The interpolated spatial distribution of cotton bollworm infestation by the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolation method was overlaid by satellite-imagery flood maps. Flood extent maps were provided by seven mosaicked images of Sentinel-1. In addition to SAR products, a 15 m-NDWI of Landsat-8 was used. The flood extent based on NDWI (pan-sharped 15 m) was 52752 ha (47423 ha based on slope mask). Using ground control points of flooded and non-flooded areas within the supervised SVM classification procedure, the kappa coefficient (κ) was as 0.89 and 0.91 for VH polarization and NDWI, respectively. Our results showed a reduction in moth populations in the areas that were flooded in spring for the earlier generations of H. armigera. Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is one of the most damaging crop pests worldwide and has become a significant threat to the food security in many countries. The Lancang River (Mekong) valley and Nujiang River (Salween) valley, which are typical mountain agricultural areas located in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) mountain range, are the key channels for the south to north migration of FAW in southwestern China. The purpose of this study was to analyze the population structure and distribution of FAW winter populations in the Lancang River and Nujiang River basins and relate these findings with respect to altitude, latitude, and mean monthly winter temperature in order to explore the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the winter population. Our results indicated that overwintering populations of FAW mainly appeared in winter cornfields with a few pupae found in summer cornfields near the middle and lower reaches of the Lancang River basin (south 26.04° N and below 1600 m) and the Nujiang River basin (south of 26.80° N and below 1500 m). Winter corn appeared to be a prerequisite for the occurrence of FAW in winter. The mean monthly temperature of the coldest month being greater than 10 °C is one critical factor determining where FAW populations will occur in winter. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda J.E Smith, is a highly destructive insect pest of maize that first invaded Africa in 2016 and has since posed additional constraints to maize production and food security in the region. This study thus investigated the seasonal difference in the abundance of S. frugiperda egg masses and larvae on 25 maize varieties during the early and late planting seasons of 2018 and 2019 in Ibadan, southwest Nigeria. The relationship between larva abundance and foliar damage was also investigated at three-, five- and seven weeks after planting (3WAP, 5WAP, and 7WAP). Results showed that abundance was higher in 2018, in the early season, and at 3WAP. Though foliar damage occurred weekly in both seasons, the relationship between foliar damage severity and larva abundance at 7WAP was consistently weak and insignificant. Also, in both seasons, most of the observed kernel damage was caused by stem borer and not fall armyworm larvae. Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is an economically important pest throughout the world. At present, the control of S. frugiperda in China largely relies on the application of chemical insecticides. In this study, the susceptibility of nine field populations of S. frugiperda to eight recommended insecticides was evaluated by using the diet-overlay method. The results indicated that spinetoram, lufenuron, and emamectin benzoate exhibited high acute toxicity to S. frugiperda, whereas chlorantraniliprole, indoxacarb, tetrachlorantraniliprole, chlorfenapyr, and lambda-cyhalothrin exhibited relatively low toxicity. Two site mutations (A201S and F290V) of the Ace-1 gene were identified from the field populations, the R allele frequencies of A201S and F290V ranged from 5.0% to 29.6% and 21.2% to 67.3%, respectively. In addition, the resistant homozygote F290V was detected in the field, with the highest genotype frequency of 40.0% in the JZ population. However, no site mutation in VGSC was detected in any tested field population of S. frugiperda. Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is the most important pest on maize (Zea mays L.) crops in Mexico and can cause substantial economic losses if left unmanaged. Commonly, growers carry out some control strategies when observe damage caused by S. frugiperda in their crops without considering whether the level of damage is sufficient to warrant any action. Some authors suggest considering as reference a level damage of 20% or more. Nevertheless, the Sinaloa growers lack of a practical method to estimate such damage. Therefore, the objective of this research was to develop a sequential sampling method that can determine the most appropriate time to initiate a control strategy and that can be applied by the producers of Sinaloa, Mexico. Three trials were established during the 2019–2020 fall-winter planting cycle in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico in regions of the state where maize is commercially grown to evaluate six different sequential sampling methods. The results indicate the best option was a sequential sampling plan based on the Taylor method, performing the regression analysis with Log10, with a maximum of 50 sampling units per plot. The fall armyworm, Spodopterafrugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a highly polyphagous, migratory pest native to the tropical and subtropical region of Americas. Grass crops particularly corn have been most heavily impacted since S. frugiperda invaded Australia in 2020. In northern Western Australia, S. frugiperda is primarily a problem in dry season (May to October) crops when there are abundant host plants available in monocultures. During the wet season (November to April) it is not known what host plants may support larval growth and development. Accordingly, this present study undertook a no-choice feeding bioassay to assess larval and pupal development on several grasses and legumes that are present over the wet season in northern Western Australia to evaluate their potential as suitable host plants for S. frugiperda. Maize (control) and sorghum were the most suitable hosts for S. frugiperda development as they supported greater larval and pupal survival, heavier larvae and pupae, and shorter development period. Following maize and sorghum, pastoral grasses, particularly blue grass, and a weedy grass, barnyard grass, had comparable effects on larval and pupal development. Legume pastures (Cavalcade, butterfly pea, and siratro) were unsuitable hosts in this bioassay as very few larvae completed their development to adults. This study demonstrates the potential for rangeland pasture grasses and weedy grasses as wet season host plants for S. frugiperda. They provide the necessary green bridge for S. frugiperda populations to survive. Simple Summary: This study extended the use of Track 3D trajectory instruments to investigate the previously unobserved nocturnal activities of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a species of moth Noctuidae. The results indicate that flying and wing flapping are the most common activities, with observed flight patterns including parabolic, circular, and zigzag trajectories. Spodoptera frugiperda, also known as the fall armyworm (FAW), is classified by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as a major agricultural pest. By gaining a more nuanced understanding of the fall armyworm's courtship behavior, simpler and more environmentally friendly methods of controlling this pest can be developed. This study used the Track 3D system to meticulously record and describe the activity characteristics and patterns of adult males and females during courtship. The results show that adult FAWs engaged in a variety of activities during courtship that were either discrete (flying, flapping, moving, and crawling), continuous (flapping + flying, flapping + crawling, and flying + crawling), or combined (flapping + touching + flapping; flying + touching + flying). Flying and flapping were the most common activities, with observed flight patterns consisting of parabolic, circular, and zigzag trajectories. The peak activity times for adult FAWs are mainly concentrated at 11:00 p.m., 3:00 a.m., and 5:00 a.m., providing fundamental data for the precise attraction and control of adult FAWs at later stages. Simple Summary: Insect migratory success is dependent on the correct allocation of energy resources with them opting to allocate energy to fuel flight rather than spend it on reproduction. However, the molecular metabolism underlying the trade-off between migration on one hand and reproduction on the other is poorly understood. Our study provides evidence supporting the trade-off between migration and reproduction in the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by comparing behavioral and physiological characteristics between migratory and non-migratory individuals. Transcriptome analysis revealed the enrichment of genes with roles in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism in migratory females. Additionally, more triglycerides were stored in the abdomen of migratory females and provided energy for later phases of migratory flight. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the physiological strategies employed by migratory insects and set the stage for future research on energy allocation and trade-offs in long-distance migration. Striking a trade-off between migration and reproduction becomes imperative during long-range migration to ensure proper energy allocation. However, the mechanisms involved in this trade-off remain poorly understood. Here, we used a takeoff assay to distinguish migratory from non-migratory individuals in the fall armyworm, which is a major migratory insect worldwide. Migratory females displayed delayed ovarian development and flew further and faster than non-migratory females during tethered flight. Transcriptome analyses demonstrated an enrichment of fatty acid genes across successive levels of ovarian development and different migratory behaviors. Additionally, genes with roles in phototransduction and carbohydrate digestion along with absorption function were enriched in migratory females. Consistent with this, we identified increased abdominal lipids in migratory females that were mobilized to supply energy to the flight muscles in the thorax. Our study reveals that the fall armyworm faces a trade-off in allocating abdominal triglycerides between migration and reproduction during flight. It is challenging to make nocturnal observations of the natural behaviour of flower‐visiting moths as they are highly sensitive to visible artificial light sources. One solution, implemented here, is to use specially‐adapted close‐focusing camera traps that rely on infrared wavelengths for detection and illumination of small insect subjects. We investigated the pollination system of Bonatea saundersiodes, a rare African terrestrial orchid that is phylogenetically nested in the large Habenaria clade.We used modified camera traps and direct observations to study the pollination system of B. saundersioides. We quantified floral traits, including morphology, nectar, spectral reflectance and scent chemistry.Flowers of this orchid species were found to be pollinated exclusively by settling noctuid moths. Moth visits to the orchid were recorded throughout the night, with peaks of activity after dusk and just before dawn. Pollinaria of the orchid are attached between the palps of visiting moths. Floral traits generally consistent with settling moth pollination include the relatively short floral spurs (ca. 20 mm) containing small amounts of nectar, white and green perianth segments, and the floral scent which is produced at night and is dominated by β‐ocimene and other terpenoid compounds.This study demonstrates that close‐focusing camera traps have tremendous potential to improve our understanding of plant–pollinator interactions which are not easy to study using traditional methods. Anthropogenic-mediated climate change is expected to negatively affect pest management in agriculture. Hence, we investigated the oviposition, immature mortality, and developmental processes of Spodoptera species (Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) and Spodoptera litura (Fabricius)) under different temperatures (20, 25, and 30°C) and relative humidity (RH) (30–35, 50–55, 70–75, and 90–95%) conditions. For fecundity, mouths of each Spodoptera species were released into a rectangular box whose inner walls were covered with a sheet of white paper for each combination of temperature and RH. The mouths were kept inside the box to deposit eggs for 72 h. Temperature and RH significantly affected the fecundity, with the maximum number of eggs laid in 70–75% at 30°C. The highest egg and larval mortalities were recorded in 30–35 and 90–95% RH, respectively. Temperature and RH greatly affected the developmental period (egg–adult) and adult emergence rate. The rapid development was recorded in 70–75% RH at 30°C. Higher number of adults was found with an increase in temperature and RH. Adult longevity was significantly higher in 70–75% RH at 20°C. Based on the present study's findings, temperature and RH had an individual apparent effect on the developmental processes of Spodoptera species instead of an interactive effect. Therefore, there is need for an in-depth study of the influence of several climatic factors, including CO2, on the developmental modality and demographic changes of Spodoptera species to assess the impacts of climatic components and the sustainable development of management strategies. The fungal order Entomophthorales occurs worldwide, with most species infecting arthropods as pathogens. Species in this order can cause epizootics and change the behavior of infected hosts. Molecular data are available only for 20% of the known species, and distributions of species are seldom summarized. Significant diversity of hosts, poor molecular data availability, and poor resolution of the phylogenetic relationships within this fungal order suggest that the diversity of these fungi is not sufficiently described. The subfamily Erynioideae includes 111 arthropod pathogens, divided among six genera, with the genus Pandora being one of the most diverse genera. Sequences of 18S, 28S, and ITS for two species are used to place these Pandora species in a phylogenic tree of the subfamily; this tree also supports our synonymy of the genus Furia with Pandora. Among the two species specifically covered in this paper, Pandora gloeospora was observed during epizootics occurring in mushroom flies (Diptera: Sciaridae) on Agaricus bisporus cultures in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland (US) mushroom farms and also in Florida on Pleurotus sp. Outside the US, P. gloeospora was found infecting several Nematocera (Diptera) in Europe (France) and Asia (China). Pandora sylvestris n. sp. was collected during epizootics occurring in larvae of hickory tussock moths, Lophocampa caryae (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), in hardwood forests in Michigan and Vermont. Acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylases (ACCs) are pivotal in fatty acid metabolism, converting acetyl-CoA to malonyl-CoA. While ACCs in humans, plants, and microbes have been extensively studied, insect ACCs, crucial for lipid biosynthesis and physiological processes, remain relatively unexplored. Unlike mammals, which have ACC1 and ACC2 in different tissues, insects possess a single ACC gene, underscoring its unique role in their metabolism. Noctuid moths, such as Trichoplusia ni, are major agricultural pests causing significant crop damage and economic loss. Their resistance to both biological and synthetic insecticides complicates pest control. Recent research has introduced cyclic ketoenols as novel insecticides targeting ACCs, yet structural information to guide their design is limited. Here, we present a 3.12 Å cryo-EM structure of the carboxyltransferase (CT) domain of T. ni ACC, offering the first detailed structural insights into insect ACCs. Our structural comparisons with ACC CT domains from other species and analyses of drug-binding sites can guide future drug modification and design. Notably, unique interactions between the CT and the central domain in T. ni ACC provide new directions for studying the ACC holoenzyme.
