Net nitrogen mineralization (Nmin) and nitrification regulate soil N availability and loss after severe wildfires in boreal forests experiencing slow vegetation recovery. Yet, how microorganisms respond to postfire phosphorus (P) enrichment to alter soil N transformations remains unclear in N-limited boreal forests. Here, we investigated postfire N-P interactions using an intensive regional-scale sampling of 17 boreal forests in the Greater Khingan Mountains (Inner Mongolia-China), a laboratory P-addition incubation, and a continental-scale meta-analysis. We found that postfire soils had an increased risk of N loss by accelerated Nmin and nitrification along with low plant N demand, especially during the early vegetation recovery period. The postfire N/P imbalance created by P enrichment acts as a "N retention" strategy by inhibiting Nmin but not nitrification in boreal forests. This strategy is attributed to enhanced microbial N-use efficiency and N immobilization. Importantly, our meta-analysis found that there was a greater risk of N loss in boreal forest soils after fires than in other climatic zones, which was consistent with our results from the 17 soils in the Greater Khingan Mountains. These findings demonstrate that postfire N-P interactions play an essential role in mitigating N limitation and maintaining nutrient balance in boreal forests.

Escalating wildfire frequency and severity, exacerbated by shifting climate patterns, pose significant ecological and economic challenges. Prescribed burns, a common forest management tool, aim to mitigate wildfire risks and protect biodiversity. Nevertheless, understanding the impact of prescribed burns on soil and microbial communities in temperate mixed forests, considering temporal dynamics and slash fuel types, remains crucial. Our study, conducted at the University of Tennessee Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center in Oak Ridge, TN, employed controlled burns across various treatments, and the findings indicate that low-intensity prescribed burns have none or minimal short-term effects on soil parameters but may alter soil nutrient concentrations, as evidenced by significant changes in porewater acetate, formate, and nitrate concentrations. These burns also induce shifts in microbial community structure and diversity, with Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria increasing significantly post-fire, possibly aiding soil recovery. In contrast, Verrucomicrobia showed a notable decrease over time, and other specific microbial taxa correlated with soil pH, porewater nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate concentrations. Our research contributes to understanding the intricate relationships between prescribed fire, soil dynamics, and microbial responses in temperate mixed forests in the Southern Appalachian Region, which is valuable for informed land management practices in the face of evolving environmental challenges.

Nonliving resources frequently flow across ecosystem boundaries, which can yield networks of spatially coupled ecosystems. Yet the significance of resource flows for ecosystem function has predominantly been understood by studying two or a few coupled ecosystems, overlooking the broader resource flow network and its spatial structure. Here, we investigate how the spatial structure of larger resource flow networks influences ecosystem function at metaecosystem scales by analyzing metaecosystem models with homogeneously versus heterogeneously distributed resource flow networks but otherwise identical characteristics. We show that metaecosystem function can differ strongly between metaecosystems with contrasting resource flow networks. Differences in function generally arise through the scaling up of nonlinear local processes interacting with spatial variation in local dynamics, the latter of which is influenced by network structure. However, we find that neither network structure guarantees the greatest metaecosystem function. Rather, biotic (organism traits) and abiotic (resource flow rates) properties interact with network structure to determine which yields greater metaecosystem function. Our findings suggest that the spatial structure of resource flow networks coupling ecosystems can be a driver of ecosystem function at landscape scales. Furthermore, our study demonstrates how modifications to the structural, biotic, or abiotic properties of metaecosystem networks can have nontrivial large-scale effects on ecosystem function. Planting diverse forests has been proposed as a means to increase long‐term carbon (C) sequestration while providing many co‐benefits. Positive tree diversity–productivity relationships are well established, suggesting more diverse forests will lead to greater aboveground C sequestration. However, the effects of tree diversity on belowground C storage have the potential to either complement or offset aboveground gains, especially during early stages of afforestation when potential exists for large losses in soil C due to soil decomposition. Thus, experimental tests of the effects of planted tree biodiversity on changes in whole‐ecosystem C balance are needed. Here, we present changes in above‐ and belowground C pools 6 years after the initiation of the Forests and Biodiversity experiment (FAB1), consisting of high‐density plots of one, two, five, or 12 tree species planted in a common garden. The trees included a diverse range of native species, including both needle‐leaf conifer and broadleaf angiosperm species, and both ectomycorrhizal and arbuscular mycorrhizal species. We quantified the effects of species richness, phylogenetic diversity, and functional diversity on aboveground woody C, as well as on mineral soil C accumulation, fine root C, and soil aggregation. Surprisingly, changes in aboveground woody C pools were uncorrelated to changes in mineral soil C pools, suggesting that variation in soil C accumulation was not driven by the quantity of plant litter inputs. Aboveground woody C accumulation was strongly driven by species and functional identity; however, plots with higher species richness and functional diversity accumulated more C in aboveground wood than expected based on monocultures. We also found weak but significant effects of tree species richness, identity, and mycorrhizal type on soil C accumulation. To assess the role of the microbial community in mediating these effects, we further compared changes in soil C pools to phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles. Soil C pools and accumulation were more strongly correlated with specific microbial clades than with total microbial biomass or plant diversity. Our results highlight rapidly emerging and microbially mediated effects of tree biodiversity on soil C storage in the early years of afforestation that are independent of gains in aboveground woody biomass. The incorporation of organic amendments is widely acknowledged for its capacity to enhance soil fertility and boost crop productivity. However, whether the addition of organic amendments can improve soil quality and crop production, simultaneously causing methane emissions in paddy fields, deserves further investigation. In this meta-analysis, the effects of different organic amendments on soil nutrient levels, rice yield and CH4 emissions were evaluated in paddy fields based on 328 observations from 77 field trial studies. Our results revealed that the addition of organic amendments significantly increased soil organic carbon (9.47%), microbial biomass carbon (21.13%), microbial biomass nitrogen (28.91%), urease (25.07%) and β-glucosidase (24.41%). Moreover, straw addition significantly increased the CH4 emissions by 152.68% and rice yield by 7.16%; green manure addition significantly increased CH4 emissions by 71.62% and rice yield by 10.09%, respectively. Although both increased the CH4 emissions, green manure had the ability to improve the availability of N, which could improve rice uptake. The regression results showed that the variation in crop yield, soil nutrients and CH4 emissions are influenced through the types and quality of organic amendments. Overall, this study suggests that organic amendments are beneficial in maintaining soil quality and improving rice yield, whereas it also increased the CH4 emissions. These meta-analysis results may provide some references for optimizing organic amendments incorporated into the soil to sustain soil fertility and crop production while mitigating soil constraints and methane emissions. Bacillus species have emerged as promising agents for reducing chemical input in sustainable crop production. These bacteria possess diverse abilities, including nutrient cycling, phytohormone production, and stress tolerance enhancement in plants. Recent advances in omics technologies have revolutionized the understanding of Bacillus sp. biology and expanded their potential applications. Bacillus-based products have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer requirements while maintaining or improving crop yields. However, their field performance may be inconsistent, highlighting the need for further research to optimize formulations and delivery methods. The compatibility with other agricultural inputs varies depending on the specific chemicals and conditions involved. The introduction of Bacillus sp. can significantly affect the soil microbiome, potentially promoting plant growth and microbial diversity. Strain specificity and host compatibility play crucial roles in determining the success of host–parasite interactions. The regulatory and safety aspects require further investigation to ensure the safe and sustainable use of Bacillus species in various applications. The integration of Bacillus-based products into existing crop management systems, following the principles of Integrated Pest Management and Integrated Crop Management, is essential for their successful implementation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge on Bacillus sp. for reducing chemical inputs for sustainable crop production, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for future research and application. Conventional cropping systems (CCSs) rely heavily on large-scale and intensive crop production, using mechanical tillage and synthetic inputs such as chemical fertilizers and pesticides. While these methods can be economically beneficial, they can also be environmentally destructive. Organic cropping systems (OCSs), on the other hand, offer a more sustainable approach with less harmful effects on the environment. CCSs exhibit higher prevalence rates compared to OCSs. This means that there is less research on soil processes in organic fields and the impact of these processes on soil quality. In this study, we aim to assess the functional potential of soils by analyzing their ability to transform carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. We use shotgun sequencing data to predict the activities of enzymes involved in these cycles. These predictions are then compared to the actual enzyme activity measured in the soil. The objects of study are samples of Chernozem soil from fields cultivated for 11 years using the OCS method and 20 years using the CCS method. It was found that the chemical properties of the studied soils differed significantly in terms of total carbon and total and available nitrogen and phosphorus. Except for phosphorus, the concentration of these elements was significantly higher in the CCS than in the OCS. We assessed the quality of the soils by measuring their enzymatic activities. A comparison of the two cropping systems showed that the activities of the enzymes involved in the C, N, P, and S cycles were, on average, 2.91, 1.89, 1.74, and 1.86 times higher in the CCS than in the OCS, respectively. A two-way PERMANOVA showed that the cropping system was the main variable (F = 14.978, p < 0.01) determining the enzymatic activity of soils, followed by soil depth (F = 9.6079, p < 0.01). We used shotgun sequencing to identify functional genes involved in C, N, P, and S metabolism, as well as genes encoding the measured soil enzymes. Compared to the OCS, the CCS soils had a higher relative abundance of genes involved in N-conversion (log2(FC) +0.22), C-conversion (log2(FC) +0.14), P-conversion (log2(FC) +0.47), and S-conversion (log2(FC) +0.24). At the same time, we found no significant differences between the systems in the relative abundance of genes encoding the measured soil enzymes. Thus, the comparison of the two cropping systems studied showed that the soil microbiome in the CCS has a greater functional potential to support biogeochemical cycles of the key biogenic elements than in the OCS. In addition, this study links the data on the representation of functional genes with the actual activity of enzymes. Based on the results, it would be helpful to focus more specifically on actual enzyme activity or to combine several indicators to obtain a more accurate understanding of soil quality. Invasive zebra and quagga (dreissenid) mussels have disrupted nutrient cycling and benthic macrofauna communities in the Laurentian Great Lakes and other invaded ecosystems. Dreissenids are now the dominant benthic macroinvertebrate in the Great Lakes, replacing the formerly dominant native bioturbating amphipod Diporeia spp. Dreissenids and Diporeia interact with their environment in fundamentally different ways, and the consequences of this functional shift in benthic community structure on benthic–pelagic coupling are not well understood, particularly in unproductive offshore lake regions.To determine how functional biology and benthic community structure impact sediment mixing and biogeochemistry in low particulate organic matter (POM) lake regions, we conducted a 6‐week sediment microcosm experiment with dreissenids, Diporeia and oligochaete worms—the second most common Great Lakes benthic macroinvertebrate.We found that sediment mixing rate and depth varied significantly among the taxa. Diporeia mixed sediment the deepest and strongest, followed by oligochaetes, while dreissenids did not appreciably mix sediment. Despite these differences, we found no significant variations among treatments in sediment oxygen penetration depth, sediment respiration (oxygen uptake) or nutrient dynamics.Our results suggest that dreissenids mix sediment less than native Great Lakes taxa, but that differential mixing rates may not measurably affect nutrient and oxygen dynamics in low‐POM sediments. Phonolite rock powder is an alternative to potassium fertilizer, having applicable K and Na content among rocks, as well as others nutrients (e.g. Ca, S and Si). The study tested the effects of replacing KCl with phonolite rock powder on tree growth, nutrition, and nutrient cycling in a Eucalyptus stand. We compared four top dressing fertilization treatments: PHO (91.7 kg ha− 1 of K and 47.5 kg ha− 1 of Na, applied via phonolite); SOD (54.2 kg ha− 1 Na, applied via NaCl); KCl (91.7 kg ha− 1 of K), and Control (no top dressing fertilization); where KCl and SOD present equivalent molar amount (2.33 kmol). Leaf K concentrations were elevated in the KCl treatment and leaf Na concentrations were elevated in the SOD treatment. Leaf K and Na concentrations in the phonolite rock powder treatment were similar to or lower than those in the KCl and SOD treatments. There were no differences among treatments in tree growth, volume, and aboveground biomass, probably due to a prolonged drought, during which precipitation was 27% below and the average temperature was 2.3ºC above the local historical average. Trees fertilized with KCl had the highest K deposition in litterfall, those fertilized with NaCl had the highest Na deposition, and phonolite rock powder fertilization was intermediate for both elements. We conclude that despite the use of phonolite did not significantly enhance the growth of eucalyptus plants, its application as a fertilizer yielded comparable leaf concentration, stem volume, and aerial biomass to that achieved with KCl, and in certain instances, even surpassed the results obtained with NaCl fertilization proving it applicability when compared to traditional sources, such as KCl. Biochar is an effective material for enhancing soil ecosystem services. However, the specific impacts of biochar on microbial indicators, particularly in degraded soils, remain poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar produced from cashew residues and sewage sludge, in a highly degraded soil, on microbial indicators. We analyzed soil chemical composition and microbial biomass C and N, enzyme activity, and stoichiometry. Cashew biochar increased soil respiration, indicating a higher availability of C to microorganisms compared to sewage sludge biochar and a better adaptation of soil microbial communities to C-rich organic material obtained from a native plant. Although the biochar differentially impacted microbial biomass C, both significantly increased N in the microbial biomass. Arylsulphatase activity did not respond to biochar application, while β-glucosidase, urease, and phosphatases showed significant changes with biochar treatments. Importantly, stoichiometry and vector analysis revealed that both types of biochar increased P limitation for soil microbes. Conversely, both biochar alleviated C and N limitations for the soil microbes. Thus, biochar applications in highly degraded soils should be supplemented with external P sources to maintain soil functions, mainly for cashew residues. Our results provide evidence that biochar can restore soil biological properties and enhance the availability of C and N to microorganisms. Exotic plant litter presents different chemical and physical properties relative to native plant litter and alters ecosystem processes and functions that may facilitate exotic plant dispersal. However, these effects are largely unknown, especially within wetland ecosystems. This study examines whether introducing litter from the exotic mangrove Laguncularia racemosa could result in (1) accelerated community litter decomposition rates and increased nutrient cycling rates and (2) microbial community structure changes in the invaded areas. A single decomposition experiment using litterbags was conducted to examine the shortterm effects of L. racemosa litter in the native mangrove forest ecosystem. The soil nutrients and microbial communities of Rhizophora stylosa, L. racemosa, and mixed forests were also compared to explore the long-term cumulative effects of L. racemosa litter in native ecosystems. The results indicated that L. racemosa has lower-quality leaf litter than R. stylosa and a significantly faster decomposition rate. Thismay result from changes in the soil microbial community structure caused by L. racemosa leaf litter input, which favors the decomposition of its own litter. Both the short-term and cumulative effect experiments demonstrated that L. racemosa leaf litter significantly increased the relative abundance of microbes related to litter decomposition, such as Proteobacteria and Bdellovibrionota, and enhanced the alpha diversity of soil fungi, thus creating a microbial environment conducive to L. racemosa leaf litter decomposition. Moreover, the accumulation of soil nutrients was lower under L. racemosa than under R. stylosa over several years. Thismay be related to themore rapid growth of L. racemosa, which causes soil nutrient absorption and storage within the plant tissues, thereby reducing the soil nutrient content. Inputting exotic mangrove L. racemosa leaf litter reduced the soil blue carbon content, potentially adversely affecting global climate change. L. racemosa may employ a unique strategy to lower soil nutrient levels in native mangroves based on its lowquality leaf litter, thereby weakening the competitive ability of native plants that are intolerant to low-nutrient conditions and enhancing its own competitive advantage to further spread into these areas. This study investigated the effects of integrating various fish species in a rice field co-culture system on water quality and soil properties. The species included common carp (Cyprinus carpio), Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus), snakeskin gourami (Trichopodus pectoralis), and giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). The key water quality parameters measured included water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, transparency, ammonia, and nitrite. Soil properties were evaluated through pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. All the selected aquatic animals showed high adaptability in co-culture systems, with survival rates exceeding 80%. Additionally, rice yields increased by approximately 16%, with the highest yield observed in plots stocked with prawns. The results indicated that the presence of aquatic animals enhanced nutrient cycling, leading to significant improvements in both water quality and soil fertility. Differences in water quality and soil properties throughout the culture period were specific to the species present. These findings suggest that rice-fish co-culture systems serve as an effective nature-based solution for enhancing productivity, sustainability, and food security. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil biodiversity is pivotal for ecological intensification of agriculture by enhancing soil functions, sustainable crop production and resilience to environmental shocks and disturbances. However, a detailed understanding of mechanisms in field conditions to inform ecological intensification strategies based on the beneficial effects of soil biodiversity on soil functions remains to be established. This special issue gathers thirteen original studies investigating the influence of soil biodiversity (bacteria, fungi, nematodes, collembolans, earthworms, and plant roots) on soil functions, namely soil C transformation and nutrient cycling, soil structure maintenance, biological pest regulation, water regulation and metal contaminant mitigation. Whether in field or microcosms conditions, most articles in this special issue focus on how agroecological practices impact the nexus between soil biodiversity-soil functioning and sustainable crop production (soil/crop management). The issue notably covers the effect of varietal selection and their diversity, crop diversification in time and in space, reduced tillage, and organic residue management over short (few weeks) and long-term (> 10 years) periods. Key insights revealed that the abundance of specific species/groups was the main driver of soil functions, while organism diversity influenced soil multifunctionality. Main research gaps highlighted include limited consideration of temporal variations (long or short term), the links between soil water regulation and soil biodiversity, better consideration of trophic interactions, and the need to define a common approach to measure and model the concomitant effects of soil biodiversity on multiple soil functions in partnership with farmers. Subantarctic Nothofagus forests are the southernmost forests in the world, with negligible atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition. Most paradigms about the role of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi in N cycling and plant N uptake at high latitudes have been tested in boreal coniferous forests, while in the southern hemisphere, ECM hosts are primarily angiosperms. Using ITS1 meta‐barcoding, we characterized ECM and saprotrophic fungal communities in evergreen and deciduous Nothofagus forests forming monodominant and mixed stands in the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego (Chile and Argentina). We assessed the N economy of Nothofagus by correlating host species with fungal relative abundances, edaphic variables, net N mineralization, microbial biomass N and the activity of eight extracellular soil enzymes activities. The N economy of deciduous N. pumilio forests was strikingly similar to boreal coniferous forests, with the lowest inorganic N availability and net N mineralization, in correlation to higher relative abundances of ECM fungi with enzymatic capacity for organic N mobilization (genus Cortinarius). In contrast, the N economy of evergreen N. betuloides forests was predominantly inorganic and correlated with ECM lineages from the family Clavulinaceae, in acidic soils with poor drainage. Grassy understory vegetation in deciduous N. antarctica forests likely promoted saprotrophic fungi (i.e., genus Mortierella) in correlation with higher activities of carbon‐degrading enzymes. Differences between Nothofagus hosts did not persist in mixed forests, illustrating the range of soil fertility of these ECM angiosperms and the underlying effects of soil and climate on Nothofagus distribution and N cycling in southern Patagonia. Plant roots represent about a quarter of global plant biomass and constitute a primary source of soil organic carbon (C). Yet, considerable uncertainty persists regarding root litter decomposition and their responses to global change factors (GCFs). Much of this uncertainty stems from a limited understanding of the multifactorial effects of GCFs and it remains unclear how these effects are mediated by litter quality, soil conditions and microbial functionality. Using complementary field decomposition and laboratory incubation approaches, we assessed the relative controls of GCF‐mediated changes in root litter traits and soil and microbial properties on fine‐root decomposition under warming, nitrogen (N) enrichment, and precipitation alteration. We found that warming and N enrichment accelerated fine‐root decomposition by over 10%, and their combination showed an additive effect, while precipitation reduction suppressed decomposition overall by 12%, with the suppressive effect being most significant under warming‐alone and N enrichment‐alone conditions. Significantly, changes in litter quality played a dominant role and accelerated fine‐root decomposition by 15% ~ 18% under warming and N enrichment, while changes in soil and microbial properties were predominant and reduced decomposition by 7% ~ 10% under precipitation reduction and the combined warming and N enrichment. Examining only the decomposition environment or litter properties in isolation can distort global change effects on root decomposition, underestimating precipitation reduction impacts by 38% and overstating warming and N effects by up to 73%. These findings highlight that the net impact of GCFs on root litter decomposition hinges on the interplay between GCF‐modulated root decomposability and decomposition environment, as well as on the synergistic or antagonistic relationships among GCFs themselves. Our study emphasizes that integrating the legacy effects of multiple GCFs on root traits, soil conditions and microbial functionality would improve our prediction of C and nutrient cycling under interactive global change scenarios. Litter decomposition is a crucial biochemical process regulated by microbial activities in the forest ecosystem. However, the dynamic response of the fungal community during litter decomposition to vegetation changes is not well understood. Here, we investigated the litter decomposition rate, extracellular enzyme activities, fungal community, and nutrient cycling-related genes in leaf and twig litters over a three-year decomposition period in a pure Liquidamabar formosana forest and a mixed L. formosana/Pinus thunbergii forest. The result showed that during the three-year decomposition, twig litter in the mixed forest decomposed faster than that in the pure forest. In both leaf litter and twig litter, β-cellobiosidase and N-acetyl-glucosamidase exhibited higher activities in the mixed forest, whereas phosphatase, β-glucosidase, and β-xylosidase were higher in the pure forest. The fungal α-diversity were higher in both litters in the pure forest compared to the mixed forest, with leaf litter showing higher α-diversity than twig litter. Fungal species richness and α-diversity within leaf litter increased as decomposition progressed. Within leaf litter, Basidiomycota dominated in the mixed forest, while Ascomycota dominated in the pure forest. Funguild analysis revealed that Symbiotroph and ectomycorrhizal fungi were more abundant in the mixed forest compared to the pure forest. In the third-year decomposition, genes related to phosphorus cycling were most abundant in both forests, with the pure forest having a higher abundance of cex and gcd genes. Fungal community structure, predicted functional structure, and gene composition differed between the two forest types and between the two litter types. Notably, the fungal functional community structure during the first-year decomposition was distinct from that in the subsequent two years. These findings suggest that dominant tree species, litter quality, and decomposition time all significantly influence litter decomposition by attracting different fungal communities, thereby affecting the entire decomposition process. Organic farming can enhance biodiversity and soil health and is a sustainable alternative to conventional farming. Yet, soil protists especially protistan predators, have received inadequate attention, and their contributions to the sustainability of organic farming remained underexplored. In this study, we examined soil microbial communities from 379 samples, including both organic and chemically fertilized soils from China. Our findings revealed higher bacterial diversity and increases in plant-beneficial bacteria in organically farmed soils. Notably, organic farming systems facilitated dynamic predator-prey interactions, which may be disrupted by the application of chemical fertilizers. Additionally, organic farming enriched protistan predators, enhancing the relative abundance of functional PGPR, thus improving soil health. We further conducted a case study highlighting the critical role of organic matter in sustaining protistan predator populations and their interactions with bacteria. We propose the crucial contributions of organic inputs for supporting protistan predators and the interplay of predator-prey, ultimately enhancing soil functions and promoting agricultural sustainability. Integrating agricultural production with livestock systems can restore soil quality from poorly managed pastures, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase carbon sequestration. We evaluated soil fertility, litter decomposition, and stabilization in extensive continuous grazing without management, intensified rotation grazing, integrated crop-livestock, livestock-forestry, crop-livestock-forestry systems, and a forest for comparison. Intensified systems showed the highest cation concentrations due to tree nutrient use while extensive systems had lowest nitrogen and carbon:nitrogen values. Forest sites had lower phosphorus and carbon:nitrogen ratios than pastures but higher organic matter, nitrogen, and nitrogen:phosphorus ratios. Higher decomposition rates and lower stabilization factors were found in open pastures compared to areas with trees and the forest. A structural equations model indicated direct negative effects of shading by trees on decomposition rates, possibly correlated with lower temperatures or different decomposer composition due to differential litter composition in systems with trees. Increased radiation had adverse effects on the stabilization factor and positive effects mediated by soil base saturation, which was higher in more open pastures. Integrated systems including forestry presented similar decomposition rates and stabilization factors to forest sites, although the responsible mechanisms may differ, with higher nutrient limitation for decomposers in forest sites due to higher nitrogen:phosphorus ratios. Therefore, our results indicate that better management practices can improve nutrient cycling in intensified and integrated livestock production systems and contribute to stabilizing the soil organic matter. Microbial biomass (MB) is an important indicator of soil quality, being responsive to changes resulting from soil management and use. Although there are studies that evaluate changes in soil microbiological attributes in coffee growing systems, the effects of these systems on MB and its relationship with other soil attributes have rarely been investigated, especially in tropical climate conditions at altitude. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of different coffee growing systems on biomass and microbial activity and how these responses relate to other soil and litter attributes. Our study was carried out in soils under three Coffea arabica cultivation systems (CCM—monoculture, CCB—consortium with banana, AFS—agroforestry system with Grevillea robusta) and under native forest (NF). Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0–10 cm and subjected to analysis to determine the microbial biomass carbon content (MB-C) by the fumigation-extraction method, accumulated respiration through released CO2, soil organic carbon (SOC) and labile carbon by wet oxidation. There was a 45% reduction in SOC in coffee growing systems and a 75% reduction in MB-C in CCM compared to NF. The AFS is closer to native forest conditions due to its positive influence on the SOC content and the efficiency of converting this carbon into microbial carbon. Abstract Biochar is an effective material for enhancing soil ecosystem services. However, the specific impacts of biochar on microbial indicators, particularly in degraded soils, remain poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar produced from cashew residues and sewage sludge, in a highly degraded soil, on microbial indicators. We analyzed soil chemical composition and microbial biomass C and N, enzyme activity, and stoichiometry. Cashew biochar increased soil respiration, indicating a higher availability of C to microorganisms compared to sewage sludge biochar and a better adaptation of soil microbial communities to C-rich organic material obtained from a native plant. Although the biochar differentially impacted microbial biomass C, both significantly increased N in the microbial biomass. Arylsulphatase activity did not respond to biochar application, while β-glucosidase, urease, and phosphatases showed significant changes with biochar treatments. Importantly, stoichiometry and vector analysis revealed that both types of biochar increased P limitation for soil microbes. Conversely, both biochar alleviated C and N limitations for the soil microbes. Thus, biochar applications in highly degraded soils should be supplemented with external P sources to maintain soil functions, mainly for cashew residues. Our results provide evidence that biochar can restore soil biological properties and enhance the availability of C and N to microorganisms. These findings have significant implications for restoration practices in degraded lands of semiarid regions.

Crop residue decomposition is fundamental for ecosystems, influencing carbon cycling, organic matter accumulation, and promoting plant development through nutrient release. Therefore, this study aimed to ascertain the rate of decomposition of four commonly cultivated crops (alfalfa, maize, avocado, and eucalyptus) along the northern coast of Lima (Huaral) and in the Ancash Mountain range (Jangas) areas. Decomposition rates were assessed using mass loss from decomposition bags measuring 15 × 10 cm, filled with 10–15 g of material tailored to each species, and buried at a depth of approximately 5 cm. Sampling occurred every three months over a year, totaling four sampling events with three replicates each, resulting in ninety-six experimental units. The findings demonstrate that the decomposition rates and the release of nutrients were markedly greater in Huaral for maize and avocado. In contrast, these rates were notably elevated in Jangas for alfalfa and eucalyptus. The leaf litter of avocado and eucalyptus (tree) had periods of accumulation and release of heavy metals such as Cd. The initial C/N ratio was one of the main factors related to the nutrient decomposition rate; in contrast, there were no significant relationships with soil properties at the study sites.

In this study, Illumina MiSeq sequencing of 16S and ITS2 rRNA genes were used to determine the dynamic changes in bacterial and fungal communities and soil properties and enzyme activities in rhizosphere soil of ginseng under forest after 5, 10 and 15 years of cultivation and different growth stages. Results showed that the changes were particularly prominent in 10-year-old ginseng under forest, and the trends of organic carbon, alkaline hydrolysed nitrogen, and available potassium were extremely similar in different duration of the crop, especially in the middle stage of rapid root growth, when soil nutrient consumption was severe, and soil enzyme activities of rhizosphere were significantly reduced. The observed changes in soil properties and enzyme activities caused by the cultivation duration of the crop and growth stage could be explained by the variations in the microbiome. The microbial composition of 10-year-old ginseng under forest has undergone significant changes, at the genus level, both Acinetobacter bacteria and Kazachstania fungi exhibited a higher abundance; the abundance of Bacillota (Firmicutes), and Candidatus udaeobacter with significantly lower abundance. This study initially revealed the changes in nutrient utilisation of ginseng under forest at different cultivation duration of the crop and different growth stages, as well as the regulatory role played by microbes in this process preliminarily. We consider 10 years to be a critical stage for the long-term cultivation of ginseng in the forest, during which it is more sensitive to environmental factors and may exhibit special dynamic changes affecting its growth and quality. This provides a reference for further precision planting and harvesting of ginseng under the forest.

Abstract Accurate estimation of cryptogam biomass, encompassing bryophytes and lichens, is crucial for understanding their ecological significance. This estimation is conducted based on the strong correlations between mass and volume of cryptogams. However, mass–volume correlations vary among cryptogams because of their morphological differences. This problem can be solved using models that consider life forms that classify cryptogams based on morphological similarities. In this study, we investigated whether life form models improve cryptogam biomass estimation accuracy. The cryptogam mass–volume correlation of each life form was estimated using Bayesian linear models. The coefficients and intercepts of linear models differed between life forms, which was attributed to the morphological characteristics of each life form. Therefore, life form models can improve the accuracy of estimation models by incorporating morphological differences. However, taxonomic models that consider only the taxonomic difference (bryophytes vs lichens) demonstrated better overall estimation than the life form models, probably because of the ability of taxonomic models to capture systematic differences between bryophytes and lichens. Furthermore, these models may mitigate estimation errors related to morphological variations that cannot be adequately represented by life form types. Based on these results, we propose the appropriate use of estimation models.

Abstract Background Leaf nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) resorption is a fundamental adaptation strategy for plant nutrient conservation. However, the relative roles that environmental factors and plant functional traits play in regulating N and P resorption remain largely unclear, and little is known about the underlying mechanism of plant functional traits affecting nutrient resorption. Here, we measured leaf N and P resorption and 13 plant functional traits of leaf, petiole, and twig for 101 representative broad-leaved tree species in our target subtropical transitional forests. We integrated these multiple functional traits into the plant economics spectrum (PES). We further explored whether and how elevation-related environmental factors and these functional traits collectively control leaf N and P resorption. Results We found that deciduous and evergreen trees exhibited highly diversified PES strategies, tending to be acquisitive and conservative, respectively. The effects of PES, rather than of environmental factors, dominated leaf N and P resorption patterns along the elevational gradient. Specifically, the photosynthesis and nutrient recourse utilization axis positively affected N and P resorption for both deciduous and evergreen trees, whereas the structural and functional investment axis positively affected leaf N and P resorption for evergreen species only. Specific leaf area and green leaf nutrient concentrations were the most influential traits driving leaf N and P resorption. Conclusions Our study simultaneously elucidated the relative contributions of environmental factors and plant functional traits to leaf N and P resorption by including more representative tree species than previous studies, expanding our understanding beyond the relatively well-studied tropical and temperate forests. We highlight that prioritizing the fundamental role of traits related to leaf resource capture and defense contributes to the monitoring and modeling of leaf nutrient resorption. Therefore, we need to integrate PES effects on leaf nutrient resorption into the current nutrient cycling model framework to better advance our general understanding of the consequences of shifting tree species composition for nutrient cycles across diverse forests.

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment offers an eco-friendly opportunity for simultaneous nutrient recovery and biomass generation, aligning with the circular bioeconomy concept. This approach aims to utilize the nutrients of potato industry wastewater (PIW) for algal growth while mitigating the environmental impact of this industrial byproduct. This study focused on cultivating three cyanobacterial strains, Anabaena oryzae, Nostoc muscorum, and Spirulina platensis, in PIW and synthetic media for 30 days to assess feasibility. Growth performance was monitored by measuring chlorophyll content, dry weight (DW), optical density (OD), and pH at 3-day intervals. The high-performing cyanobacterial biomass from the laboratory findings was formulated into a biofertilizer, which was then evaluated in a controlled greenhouse experiment on celery and lettuce plants. The biofertilizer replaced conventional NPK mineral fertilizers at different levels (25%, 50%, and 75%), while a control group received 100% chemical fertilizer. The results showed favourable growth of all three cyanobacteria strains and their mixture in PIW throughout the experiment. The mixed cyanobacteria followed by Spirulina platensis exhibited the highest growth rates, achieving chlorophyll contents of 3.75 and 2.30 µg·mL−1, DWs of 1.79 g·L−1 and 1.63 g·L−1, and ODs of 0.41 and 0.38, respectively, surpassing the other treatments. The formulated biofertilizers, Spi-PIW (Spirulina platensis + potato industry wastewater) and Cyano-PIW (mixed culture+ potato industry wastewater), significantly enhanced plant height, root and stem lengths, and the number of leaves per plant in celery and lettuce compared to the control group. These biofertilizer treatments also improved chlorophyll contents, as well as macro- and micronutrient levels, in the two crops. Additionally, the application of these biofertilizers improved certain sandy soil properties, i.e., pH, total organic matter, total nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. In conclusion, utilizing PIW as a substrate for cultivating cyanobacteria strains and producing high-quality liquid bio-organic fertilizers holds potential for reducing recommended NPK fertilizer doses by 25–50% in celery and lettuce growth, providing an environmentally friendly approach.

Fertilizer application plays a crucial role in the decomposition of white poplar leaf litter and cycling of nutrients within forest ecosystems. The impact of various fertilizer additions on white poplar leaf litter and nutrient cycling is poorly understood. In this study, seven treatments were conducted at the following levels: Control (CK), no adding mineral fertilizers, N fertilization (+N), N and P fertilization (+NP), N, P, K fertilization (+NPK), P, K (+PK), manure fertilizer (+MF), and bird fertilizers (+BF) in a white poplar plantation in Qadis district, and used the litterbag techniques to measure litter mass remaining. The main objectives of our study were: (1) to explore the response of white poplar leaf litter decomposition to various fertilizers and accelerate the decomposition process; (2) to examine the relationship between C, N, and P concentration and their stoichiometric characteristic in leaf litter and soil. In this investigation, our results showed that white poplar leaf litter was significantly affected by fertilizers, and the decomposition process was greatly accelerated with + MF, +NPK, and + BF. The decay rate constant k (year −1) shows the decomposition rate of white poplar leaf litter as follows: +MF > +NPK > +BF > +PK > +NP > +N > CK (0.56, 0.53, 0.52, 0.51,0.51,0.5, and 0.46). Soil nutrients N, P and K increased significantly during the decomposition time with + MF, +NPK, and + BF, respectively, while C:N, C:P, and N:P ratios were highest in the white poplar leaf litter, and lowest in soil, we observed significant association between nutrients concentrations in soil and white poplar leaf and their stoichiometric. This current study concluded that adding + MF, +NPK and + BF fertilizers might be the preferred management option as they provided potentially beneficial changes in leaf litter decomposition and increased nutrient concentration. The data obtained will be a valuable reference for fertilization management strategies in forest ecosystems.

Although aboveground biodiversity has been extensively studied, the impact of nutrient enrichment on soil microbial populations remains unclear. Soil microorganisms serve as important indicators in shaping soil nutrient cycling processes and are typically sensitive to nutrient additions. For this, we employed a factorial combination design to examine the impact of nutrient additions on the composition and function of soil bacteria in a temperate steppe. Nitrogen addition promoted the growth of copiotrophic bacteria (Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidota) but inhibited the growth of oligotrophic bacteria (Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Verrucomicrobiota). Phosphorus addition alleviated phosphorus deficiency, resulting in a decrease in the abundance of phoD-harboring bacteria (Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria). Significant enhancement of soil bacterial alpha diversity was observed only in treatments with added phosphorus. Changes in NO3 --N, NH4 +-N, available phosphorus, and dissolved organic carbon resulting from nutrient addition may have a greater impact on microbial community structure than changes in soil pH caused by nitrogen addition. Moreover, nutrient addition may indirectly impact microbial ecological function by altering nutrient availability in the soil. In conclusion, our study suggests that soil nutrient availability, particularly available phosphorus, affects soil bacterial communities and potentially regulates the biogeochemical cycles of soil ecosystems. Current fertilizer recommendations often neglect nutrient cycling across crop rotations. This study aimed to assess the decay rate and nutrient (N, P, K) release patterns of sorghum, black oat, and corn residues (omitido) in an integrated crop–livestock system. The experiment used factorial treatments based on two sward heights (high and low) and two nitrogen fertilization levels (N-pasture at 200 kg N ha−1 and N-corn at 0 kg N ha−1). Litter bags were collected at various intervals from each crop to measure nutrient release patterns and decomposition rates. The results showed that pasture height and nitrogen fertilization significantly influenced decomposition and nutrient release, affecting the subsequent grain crop phase. Potassium was released rapidly and in high amounts. Nitrogen fertilization during the pasture phase prevented nitrogen and phosphorus immobilization in black oat residue and reduced immobilization in corn residue. These findings highlight the importance of accounting for nutrient cycling and decomposition rates in fertilization strategies to enhance the sustainability of integrated crop–livestock systems. Plant litter imported from forest headwater streams is an important supply of material and energy to the downstream aquatic ecosystems, affecting the storages and fluxes of carbon and nutrients of the whole forest ecosystems. However, our knowledge on the dynamics of plant litter potassium (K) storage is still limited. Here, we monitored the spatial and temporal characteristics of plant litter K concentration and storage in a subtropical forest headwater stream for an entire year. Results showed that: (1) the annual average concentration and storage of K in plant litter were 1.4 mg/kg and 19.6 mg/m2, respectively, with an overall decreasing trend throughout the year and from the source of the stream to the mouth; (2) riparian forest type (broadleaved vs. mixed forests) and the presence of a tributary showed significant effects on twig K concentration and storage, but did not affect those of other types of plant litter (total, fine woody debris, leaf, reproductive part, and twig); (3) water depth and active channel width positively correlated with litter K storage, while stream gradient, water dissolved oxygen, and alkalinity negatively corrected to litter K storage. Our results clearly demonstrated the spatiotemporal dynamics of plant litter K storage in the subtropical forest headwater stream, which provides basic data and scientific basis for an in-depth understanding of nutrient fluxes and cycling along with ecohydrological processes in subtropical forest ecosystems. Measuring the chemical traits of leaf litter is important for understanding plants' influence on nutrient cycles, including through nutrient resorption and litter decomposition, but conventional leaf trait measurements are often destructive and labor-intensive. Here, we develop and evaluate the performance of partial least-squares regression models that use reflectance spectra of intact or ground leaves to estimate leaf litter traits, including carbon and nitrogen concentration, carbon fractions, and leaf mass per area (LMA). Our analyses included more than 300 samples of senesced foliage from 11 species of temperate trees, including both needleleaf and broadleaf species. Across all samples, we could predict each trait with moderate-to-high accuracy from both intact-leaf litter spectra (validation R2 = 0.543–0.941; %root mean squared error (RMSE) = 7.49–18.5) and ground-leaf litter spectra (validation R2 = 0.491–0.946; %RMSE = 7.00–19.5). Notably, intact-leaf spectra yielded better predictions of LMA. Our results support the feasibility of building models to estimate multiple chemical traits from leaf litter of a range of species. In particular, intact-leaf spectral models allow non-destructive trait estimation in a matter of seconds, which could enable researchers to measure the same leaves over time in studies of nutrient resorption. Microplastics (MPs) as emerging contaminants have a global occurrence, including both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Soil enzymes contribute to maintaining ecosystem multifunctionality, for example, nutrient cycling, organic material decomposition, and carbon and climate regulation. Our present review highlights the impacts of MPs on soil enzyme activities, influencing factors, and the underlying mechanisms. Increasing findings confirm that MPs can change the activities of a range of soil enzymes involved in the biogeochemical cycling of C and N. However, current results are highly controversial. The effects of MPs highly vary from significant to nonsignificant and are dependent on polymer type, biodegradability, dosage, size, shape, and aging degree of MPs, and exposure conditions. Compared to traditional MPs, biodegradable MPs generally show more pronounced effects. MPs can change soil enzyme activities via different pathways. On one hand, MPs can directly change soil enzyme structure, leading to alterations in enzyme activity. On the other hand, MPs can create unique habitats, provide carbon sources for specific functional microbes producing enzymes, and release plastic additives and pollutants disturbing the production of these enzymes. Furthermore, MPs can alter soil physicochemical and biological properties, the availability of substrates, plants and soil fauna, regulating soil enzymes and their functions. Agroforestry has recently gained attention as it is capable of having multiple outlooks in both economic as well as product-oriented ways, also with its full potential can result in a sustainable life. Agroforestry nowadays can also be called as Integrated Farming System (IFS) as it combines all the systems altogether viz agriculture, horticulture, forestry, animal husbandry, apiculture, pisciculture etc. In recent days the problem of climate change and carbon sequestration, declining food security, improper nutrient cycling in the soils, soil conservation, livelihood improvement of the farmers, biodiversity enhancement all gain utmost priority. But, altogether cannot be solved in a single stretch except Agroforestry. The reason behind this is Agroforestry with its four dimensions namely regulating services, supporting services, cultural services and provisioning services has the potential to solve all these problems at a single stroke. The current area under agroforestry in India is estimated as 25.32 m ha, or 8.2% of the total geographical area of the country which should be increased to meet all the above-mentioned recommendations. The benefits which we get from agroforestry are innumerable. Additionally, substantial extent of areas of unproductive crop, grass, and forest lands as well as degraded lands could be brought under agroforestry. The places which are under the government but not used to its full potential has to be brought under agroforestry for the purpose of not only utilizing the land but also to derive some of the environmental and ecological benefits which it provides. Our knowledge on these issues is unfortunately rudimentary. Diversifying wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-based cropping systems is important for the sustainability of dryland agriculture. Research has focused on the agronomic benefits of increased crop diversity in semi-arid environments, but less is known about the impacts of increased crop diversity on the soil microbial community. This work compared soil health parameters between a continuous wheat crop sequence to a diverse sequence that included pea (Pisum sativum L.), proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.), safflower (Carthamus tinctorius, L.), and spring wheat. Respiration was higher (p <.005) in the diverse sequence while activity of N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase was lower (p <.05) with a mean rate of 26.3 and 16.3 mg ρ-nitrophenol kg−1 soil h−1 for the continuous wheat and diverse sequences, respectively. The mean net nitrogen mineralized during the growing season was 33.2 ± 2.5 kg ha−1 and was not different between treatments (p >.05). No difference was observed in bacterial alpha diversity, while fungal community diversity was 52% lower in the diverse rotation. The results of this work suggest that specific crops in a rotation may impact microbial processes related to nitrogen mineralization and that the soil fungal community may be more sensitive to changes in crop sequence than the soil bacterial community. Aims: Soil fauna play a key role in the litter decomposition process in two ways; directly via fragmentation and consumption of the litter, and indirectly through changes in soil structure and the activity of microorganisms. The study aimed at better understanding how soil fauna affects the release of nutrients from litter. Methods: We conducted a litter decomposition experiment using litterbags of three mesh sizes (0.01 mm, 1 mm, and 4 mm), and chemical treatments (no naphthalene; naphthalene application) to assess soil fauna effect on nutrient release in a poplar plantation in eastern China over a two-year period from Jan 2019 to Dec 2020. Results: We found that the contribution of soil fauna to the mass loss of poplar leaf litter was 29% over the two-year period, and the contribution was more pronounced within the first four months. Soil macrofauna and meso-/micro- fauna contributed similarly to leaf litter mass loss, while microbial decomposition contributed the most to the decomposition process. The presence of soil fauna significantly promoted the degradation of cellulose and lignin, and accelerated the release of nitrogen at later stages of decomposition. A structural equation model revealed that higher soil fauna abundance not only promoted the litter decay rate directly, but also indirectly through modifying nitrogen and lignin contents. Conclusions: Our results highlight the importance of soil fauna on cellulose and lignin degradation, and the importance of including this when simulating decomposition models for obtaining a better mechanistic understanding of forest litter decomposition. Scavenging is a key process for the cycling of nutrients in ecosystems, yet it is still neglected in the ecological literature. Apart from the importance of specific groups of animals in scavenging, there have been few ecological studies that compare them. Furthermore, the ecological studies on scavenging have mainly focused on vertebrates despite the crucial importance of invertebrates in this process. Here, we performed a large‐scale ant suppression and vertebrate exclusion experiment to quantify the relative contribution of ants, non‐ant invertebrates and vertebrates in scavenging nitrogen‐rich (insect carcasses) and carbon‐rich (seeds) baits in two contrasting mountainous habitats in Brazil (grasslands and forests). Overall, bait removal was 23.2% higher in forests than in grasslands. Ants were the primary scavengers in grasslands, responsible for more than 57% of dead insect larvae and seed removal, while, in forests, non‐ant invertebrates dominated, removing nearly 65% of all baits. Vertebrates had a minor role in scavenging dead insect larvae and seeds in both habitats, with <4% of removals. Furthermore, our results show that animal‐based baits were more consumed in forests than seeds, and both resources were equally consumed in grasslands. Therefore, we demonstrate the superiority of invertebrates in this process, with a particular emphasis on the irreplaceable role of ants, especially in this grassland ecosystem. As such, we further advance our knowledge of a key ecosystem process, showing the relative importance of three major groups in scavenging and the differences in ecosystems functioning between two contrasting tropical habitats. Skid trails are a major management‐induced disturbance in temperate forest ecosystems with considerable impact on soil ecological processes that are so far poorly understood. In German forests, skid trails comprise 10%–20% of the forest area that is potentially affected by soil compaction through heavy machinery. We systematically investigated the influence of skid trails on physical, chemical and microbiological soil parameters at 84 paired plots across four Central European forest types.In low mountain forests with steeper topography, skid trails had more drastic effects than in lowland forests. Skid trails in low mountain areas showed a decrease in the C to N ratio of microbial biomass (MBC/MBN), as well as increased microbial (MBC/SOC) and enzyme activities leading to faster carbon turnover (lower C/N, EOC/EN) and increased CO2 losses (CO2/SOC) from the soil.The overall effects of the skid trails in lowland forests were small. On base‐poor soils, we found an increase in the MBC/MBN ratio, while skid trails in base‐rich lowland soils showed a reduction in CO2/SOC, suggesting a proportional increase in soil carbon storage.Regardless of region‐specific effects, the relative increase in the bulk density of the fine soil was identified as a 'golden trait' that determined the effects of skid trails on many soil parameters, as shown by negative correlations with SOC, N, MBC, MBN, MBP, MBC/SOC and CO2/SOC and positive ones with the activities of certain hydrolytic enzymes.Synthesis and applications: Our data clearly showed that carbon conversion processes and soil respiration leading to significant carbon and nutrient losses increased significantly on skid trails in low mountain regions with relatively steep slopes, which was in sharp contrast to lowland sites. The strong context dependence of our findings suggests that the mapping of soil conditions in terms of slope, substrate and moisture with high spatial resolution is mandatory to assess the vulnerability of sites to soil compaction by heavy machinery. Based on such vulnerability analysis, negative impacts can be minimised through the designation of permanently fixed skid trails, technical adaptation of vehicles (e.g. wide base tyres) as well as careful planning and timing of management operations that should be restricted to dry weather and soil moisture conditions or periods of frost. Carrion ecology, i.e. the decomposition and recycling of dead animals, has traditionally been neglected as a key process in ecosystem functioning. Similarly, despite the large threats that inland aquatic ecosystems (hereafter, aquatic ecosystems) face, the scientific literature is still largely biased towards terrestrial ecosystems. However, there has been an increasing number of studies on carrion ecology in aquatic ecosystems in the last two decades, highlighting their key role in nutrient recirculation and disease control. Thus, a global assessment of the ecological role of scavengers and carrion in aquatic ecosystems is timely. Here, we systematically reviewed scientific articles on carrion ecology in aquatic ecosystems to describe current knowledge, identify research gaps, and promote future studies that will deepen our understanding in this field. We found 206 relevant studies, which were highly biased towards North America, especially in lotic ecosystems, covering short time periods, and overlooking seasonality, a crucial factor in scavenging dynamics. Despite the low number of studies on scavenger assemblages, we recorded 55 orders of invertebrates from 179 families, with Diptera and Coleoptera being the most frequent orders. For vertebrates, we recorded 114 species from 40 families, with birds and mammals being the most common. Our results emphasise the significance of scavengers in stabilising food webs and facilitating nutrient cycling within aquatic ecosystems. Studies were strongly biased towards the assessment of the ecosystem effects of carrion, particularly of salmon carcasses in North America. The second most common research topic was the foraging ecology of vertebrates, which was mostly evaluated through sporadic observations of carrion in the diet. Articles assessing scavenger assemblages were scarce, and only a limited number of these studies evaluated carrion consumption patterns, which serve as a proxy for the role of scavengers in the ecosystem. The ecological functions performed by carrion and scavengers in aquatic ecosystems were diverse. The main ecological functions were carrion as food source and the role of scavengers in nutrient cycling, which appeared in 52.4% (N = 108) and 46.1% (N = 95) of publications, respectively. Ecosystem threats associated with carrion ecology were also identified, the most common being water eutrophication and carrion as source of pathogens (2.4%; N = 5 each). Regarding the effects of carrion on ecosystems, we found studies spanning all ecosystem components (N = 85), from soil or the water column to terrestrial vertebrates, with a particular focus on aquatic invertebrates and fish. Most of these articles found positive effects of carrion on ecosystems (e.g. higher species richness, abundance or fitness; 84.7%; N = 72), while a minority found negative effects, changes in community composition, or even no effects. Enhancing our understanding of scavengers and carrion in aquatic ecosystems is crucial to assessing their current and future roles amidst global change, mainly for water–land nutrient transport, due to changes in the amount and speed of nutrient movement, and for disease control and impact mitigation, due to the predicted increase in occurrence and magnitude of mortality events in aquatic ecosystems. With growing awareness of the environmental, economic, and social costs associated with food waste, there is a concerted effort on multiple scales to recover the nutrient value of discarded food. These developments are positive, but the rapid movement toward alternatives and the complexity of solving problems located at the intersection of economic, social, and environmental systems also have the potential to produce unanticipated risks. This paper draws upon long-term stakeholder-engaged research throughout New England, with a focus on Maine, to develop a transdisciplinary, systems-based model of the potential social, economic, and environmental risks of food waste nutrient cycling. This study examines the critical interaction between seasonal precipitation variability and forest maturity in determining ion deposition patterns in rehabilitated forest ecosystems. This research was conducted in rehabilitated forest sites in Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia that had ecologically similar plant distribution, species, and age in each planting area. This facilitated the standardization of rainfall deposition in the different study plots which streamlined the study of these specific facets of ecosystem dynamics. The goal is to understand how seasonal changes and the age of the forest influence the chemical composition of the flux that relates to the movement and deposition of nutrients through the forest ecosystem. This flux is a key factor in the health of the forest ecosystem and nutrient cycling. Using ion exchange resin (IER) samplers, we accurately measured and compared the deposition of different ions (Ca2+, Na+, Fe2+, Cu2+, NO3−, NH4+ and SO42−) across different seasons and forest ages. The deposition of Ca2+ and NH₄+ was significantly lower in the low‐precipitation season than in the high‐precipitation season in all forest stands, regardless of the year they were established (1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, and 2009). In contrast, ions such as Na+, Fe2+, Cu2+, NO3− and SO42− showed no clear seasonal fluctuations. In addition, the study shows that through‐fall in forest stands from 2002, 2005 and 2009 had higher concentrations of Ca2+ in both seasons than in 1996 and 1999. Interestingly, forest stands from 2009 and 2002 had elevated levels of Na+ and SO₄2− in seasons with low precipitation, while stands from 1996 had higher levels in seasons with high precipitation. Our results emphasize the crucial role of precipitation amount and canopy age in determining ion deposition in forest ecosystems. By demonstrating the significant influence of precipitation seasonality and forest maturity on the chemical composition of throughfall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of nutrient dynamics in developing forest landscapes and provides valuable insights for ecological restoration measures. The Devonian-Carboniferous (D-C; 359 Ma) boundary is marked by widespread deposition of organic-matter-rich black shales associated with the Hangenberg mass extinction event. The Exshaw Formation spans the D-C boundary in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) and includes the basal Exshaw Shale deposited under broadly anoxic waters. The sediments at the base of the Exshaw Shale were deposited synchronously during a transgressive event across the WCSB, spanning the geographic variability of the basin. The variable Corg content of the shale was affected by local nutrient upwelling and paleotectonic features impacting water depth and circulation. To characterize the link between paleogeography and nutrient cycling, geographic (N = 20 locations) and stratigraphic (N = 6 locations) trends of δ13^^ and δ15^^ were examined throughout the WCSB, representing a range of depositional settings. The δ15^^ values range between 0.0 and 6.3%" and δ13^^ from -29.5 to -26.8%. Phytoplankton production in focused upwelling zones acquired a relatively 15N-depleted signature through isotopic fractionation during nutrient assimilation, and the residual nutrient pool was 15N-enriched. The advection of surface waters away from the location of upwelling supported additional phytoplankton growth and the deposition of sediments with higher δ1^ values. The stratigraphic sections include black laminated and burrowed mudrock sequences that record changes in paleoredox conditions, water depth, and tectonism over time. Up-core from the base of the Exshaw, the Corg content decreases and simultaneously δ15^^ increases, suggesting a decrease in eutrophic conditions. Variable δ13^^ and δ15^^ trends demonstrate that there is no "type" isotopic profile spanning the D-C boundary in the WCSB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and aims: Cover crops have the potential to aid in adapting agricultural systems to climate change impacts through their ecosystem services, such as preventing soil erosion, remediating soil structure, and storing carbon belowground. Though roots are integral to these processes, there is a lack of cover crop root trait data. This study aims to characterize rooting behavior of several commercially available cover crops and assess how differences in root system architecture potentially impact their selection for ecosystem services. Methods: Twenty-two cover crop cultivars across the grass, legume, and brassica families were grown in O'Fallon, Missouri, USA. Canopy cover was monitored throughout the growing season. Shoot and root biomass samples were collected and analyzed. Results: Cereal rye and winter triticale were the most winter hardy cultivars and provided the highest percent canopy cover. Cereal rye and winter triticale also generated the highest amount of shoot and root biomass among treatments but diverged in their root system architectures. Winter triticale forms coarser roots and exhibited deeper rooting, which may be better suited for carbon sequestration. Rapeseed and Siberian kale have favorable C:N ratios for nutrient recycling, but rapeseed may invest more into lateral root formation and have a higher potential to "catch" excess nutrients. Conclusion: Selection of cover crops for ecosystem services should account for root system architecture and their suitability for these ecosystem services. Differences in root traits among cultivars within the same family highlight the potential to breed cover crop root system architecture to further enhance ecosystem service efficacy. Drilosphere is the zone of interaction between earthworms and soil environments. Besides contributing to soil microporosity, the drilosphere provides habitat for a wide array of micro-organisms. There is growing evidence that the impact of earthworms on soil functions is mediated by microbial populations in the soil. It is important for agroecosystems that the soil quality is maintained for processes like decomposition, soil formation, and several other soil ecological properties. This review focuses on the structure and function of the Drilosphere, as well as its significance as a microbial 'hotspot'; which contributes to the agroecosystem earthworm-driven Drilosphere is a key to agroecosystem, boosting soil health and productivity through improved water movement, enhanced fertility, and nutrient cycling. Their mucus stabilizes soil and promote microbial activity, while interactions with plant roots supports nutrient exchange. Tasmanian eucalypt forests are among the most carbon‐dense in the world, but projected climate change could destabilize this critical carbon sink. While the impact of abiotic factors on forest ecosystem carbon dynamics have received considerable attention, biotic factors such as the input of animal scat are less understood. Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii)—an osteophageous scavenger that can ingest and solubilize nutrients locked in bone material—may subsidize plant and microbial productivity by concentrating bioavailable nutrients (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus) in scat latrines. However, dramatic declines in devil population densities, driven by the spread of a transmissible cancer, may have underappreciated consequences for soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and forest productivity by altering nutrient cycling. Here, we fuse experimental data and modeling to quantify and predict future changes to forest productivity and SOC under various climate and scat‐quality futures. We find that devil scat significantly increases concentrations of nitrogen, ammonium, phosphorus, and phosphate in the soil and shifts soil microbial communities toward those dominated by r‐selected (e.g., fast‐growing) phyla. Further, under expected increases in temperature and changes in precipitation, devil scat inputs are projected to increase above‐ and below‐ground net primary productivity and microbial biomass carbon through 2100. In contrast, when devil scat is replaced by lower‐quality scat (e.g., from non‐osteophageous scavengers and herbivores), forest carbon pools are likely to increase more slowly, or in some cases, decline. Together, our results suggest often overlooked biotic factors will interact with climate change to drive current and future carbon pool dynamics in Tasmanian forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Straw returning has gradually been adopted as an effective approach to address the serious degradation of farmland. However, the carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio of rice straw is generally too high for microorganisms to decompose the organic materials and release nutrients, which may minimize the benefits of straw returning to the agricultural production system. This study aimed to investigate the effects of straw returning on rice production and propose optimum nitrogen (N) management for early rice production under a straw returning system. The total N fertilizer that was evaluated was 165 kg N ha-1, urea (46% N), applied in different proportions in three stages of rice cultivation: basal, tillering, and panicle. Using no straw returning with the N fertilizer ratio of basal:tillering:panicle = 5:2:3 treatment (T1) as the control, four different N fertilizer ratios of basal:tillering:panicle, including 5:2:3 (T2), 5:2:2 (T3), 5:4:1 (T4), and 5:5:0 (T5) were set under straw returning. The return of straw decreased the available N in the soil at the tillering stage, and impeded root growth and the crop canopy from establishing, which decreased the effective panicles by 10.1% compared with that of T1, limiting the increases in rice grain yield. Increasing the N fertilizer ratio 10–20% (T3 and T4) at the tillering stage effectively increased the content of soil ammonium and nitrate nitrogen, improved the root growth, and increased the root activities by 16.0–40.5% at the tillering stage. As a result, the effective panicle number increased by 5.1–16.2%. Among these, T4 treatment maximized the benefits of straw returning the most. Additionally, increasing the N fertilizer ratio at the tillering stage increased the shoot uptake across the early rice growing season and synchronized crop N uptake with the accumulation of carbon assimilates, which enhanced the crop growth rate and increased the rice yield by 13.5–25.1%. It is concluded that increasing the N fertilizer ratio by 20% at the tillering stage is a promising strategy to increase the availability of N in the phases of high demand for this nutrient. Animal-derived biowastes can be alternatives to mineral phosphorus fertilizers. However, they typically have lower efficiency and higher transport costs because of their low bulk density. Pelleting can reduce their volume and facilitate their use as placement fertilizers but may also decrease phosphorus availability. This study examined how acidification and pelletizing affect phosphorus availability in biowastes. Digestate solid fraction and meat and bone meal were treated in four ways: (1) untreated (U), (2) acidified (A), (3) untreated pelletized (UP), and (4) acidified pelletized (AP). These treatments were tested in soil incubation and pea growth experiments, with fertilizers placed 5 cm beneath the seeds to evaluate their effectiveness as placement fertilizers. Acidification significantly enhanced the phosphorus solubility of DSF and MBM by approximately 5 and 7 times respectively, while pelletizing acidified materials reduced it. In the incubation experiment, acidified materials in the powdery form showed the highest soil water-extractable phosphorus, with no significant differences among U, UP, and AP ways. In the rhizobox experiment, pelletizing untreated digestate significantly reduced plant dry matter compared to the untreated fibrous form (from 2.0 g to 1.35 g). Acidified and acidified pelletized digestate treatments resulted in the highest shoot dry matter (2.8 g and 2.95 g, respectively), surpassing even triple the amount of superphosphate (2.53 g). For meat and bone meal, the acidified powder led to the highest plant growth (2.0 g), while untreated powder resulted in the lowest amount of plant growth (0.4 g), which was lower than that of the negative control (0.6 g). No significant differences were noted between untreated and acidified pellets. These findings indicate that acidification enhances phosphorus availability in biowastes, while pelletizing reduces it. The acidified pelletized digestate solid fraction has lower volume and higher P use efficiency than its untreated material, showing higher plant growth when compared to mineral P fertilizer.

Waste management is one of the most pressing environmental issues due to the result of human activities with changes in lifestyle and consumption patterns. To combat this, waste minimization solutions have been built on the basis of the waste hierarchy so as to procure practical value from the product source. However, efforts taken in the previous stages have turned out to be uneconomical and resulted in immense quantities of chemical waste. The challenges and barriers are significant, but so are the opportunities. Therefore, the usage of marine organisms has been recommended as an efficient alternative in the waste management process because of its unique attributes. The bacterial communities among marine habitats play an important part in the global biogeochemical cycle due to their diverse metabolic capacities. Marine microorganisms have unique biodegradation processes for dissolving a broad range of organic contaminants, either as individual strains or as members of microbial consortia. They have the ability to degrade, alter, or create a wide range of compounds created naturally or by man-made processes. These microorganisms are actively involved in nutrient cycling and productivity and, therefore, aid in balancing the ecosystem by managing the concentrations of pollutants. Intense research on marine microorganisms through all these years has gathered that marine microorganisms play a crucial role in the production of non-toxic biosurfactants and biopolymers. Furthermore, a deeper comprehension of the harmful heavy metals that interact with marine microbes has led to the suggestion that these microbes could be used in a variety of ways to treat contaminated water systems. The core of this paper reports the literature on the degradation of organic wastes, inorganic wastes and wastewater by several marine microorganisms that can break down and extract toxic substances from the environment. This review paper attempts to explore the potential of marine microorganisms in depth. Marine microorganisms have demonstrated their significance through a novel source of their enzymes, paving a promising scope for the industry and academia. A significant fraction of these organisms have not been identified, and their enzyme activity has not been studied due to exploratory limitations. Therefore, profiling the role of marine microorganisms in waste management will enable us to observe the significant benefits in the long run. Also, this paper has emphasized the challenges and opportunities involved in the usage of marine microorganisms and the outputs acquired in this bioeconomy era. Utilizing these resources has exposed several natural products that may present several opportunities for biotechnological applications. This will also provide us with the treatment outcome to overcome their adverse properties, if any, and deliver effective ways to advance the use of marine microorganisms in waste management systems.
