Objective: To describe the prevalence of obesity and analyse possible differences in it according to sociodemographic characteristics, diet, physical activity, screen use and family perception of the weight and dietary habits of schoolchildren aged 3 to 4 years in Barcelona. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in a representative sample of schools selected based on the socioeconomic status (SES) of the corresponding neighbourhood and school ownership. We selected 101 schools in Barcelona and recruited pupils aged 3 to 4 years during the 2016–17 academic year (n = 2936 children). Anthropometric measurements were taken in each participant. Family members completed a questionnaire on eating habits, physical activity, sleeping hours, screen use and the family’s perception of the child’s weight and diet. The primary variable was the body mass index (BMI) for age and sex, subsequently categorised as normal weight, overweight or obese. Results: Approximately 7.0% of girls and 7.1% of boys aged 3 to 4 years presented obesity. The prevalence of obesity (8.3%) was higher in neighbourhoods of lower SES compared to those of higher SES (5.2%; p = .004). Parents of children with obesity reported that the child had some excess weight or excess weight in 46.9% of cases, 3.9% indicated the child’s weight was appropriate and 0.9% that the child was a little underweight or underweight (p

Obesity is a global health problem that affects not only adults and older adults, but also children and adolescents, thus recognizing the need to adapt the educational intervention programs of the Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health, to adapt them to the children's universe. It has been demonstrated in practice that physical activity is an ideal space for the educational inclusion of all schoolchildren; we have moved from the paradigm of integration to the paradigm of inclusion, where everyone enjoys differentiated attention according to their needs. It is the authors' purpose to communicate about an educational intervention applied to 9-year-old children with obesity and overweight, with actions that modify their lifestyle and educate the family to face this alarming health problem in this age group.

ABSTRACT Introduction. The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased considerably since 2000, acquiring the dimension of an epidemic, with 5.9% of children under 5 years of age being overweight. Modifiable causative factors include lifestyle, sleep, diet and physical activity. The objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention in a school environment to modify the habits of children aged 6-12 years in 3 areas, diet, physical activity and screen time. Methodology. The sample is 540 children, in primary education stage distributed, in three groups: a) diet and screen time intervention, b) physical activity and screen time and c) diet, physical activity and screen time. The educational intervention includes contents of the plate method, food pyramid and exercise based on the Canadian physical activity guide for children aged 5 to 11 years. Age variables and anthropometric measurements are collected. Introduction: although the prevalence of childhood obesity (CO) is high globally, there are no composite indices to estimate territorial aspects associated with its risk Objective: to develop an obesity risk index (IROBIC) for small administrative units, called “comunas” in Chile Methods: we used 2019 data from public sources on children under 10 years living in “comunas” of the two largest regions. IROBIC includes 16 indicators standardized for each “comuna” and grouped together into four domains, determined by principal component analysis (health, socio-economic, built-in and educational environments). IROBIC was calculated as a weighted geometric mean. Differences in obesity risk between the 10 and 5 “comunas” with the highest and lowest IROBIC and of each domain, were calculated with the disparity ratio. Results: in spite of the poorest “comunas” having the highest IROBIC, when its value and that for each domain were considered, we observed that the effect of inequality could be mitigated. The 10 and 5 “comunas” with the highest IROBIC have a 2.41 and 4.05 higher risk of CO compared to those with the lowest values Conclusions: IROBIC is a useful tool for monitoring the risk of CO and its factors from a territorial perspective. - Abstract
Hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia contribute to the endogenous formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), and diet constitutes one of the exogenous sources. The binding of AGEs to receptor for glycation end products (RAGE) induces signaling pathways that activate the transcription of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers. Soluble RAGE (sRAGE) levels have been proposed as a biomarker in inflammatory diseases. Several studies describe the role of RAGE in obesity, so it has been discussed whether there is a differential pattern between children with normal weight and obesity. Several studies describe the role of RAGE in obesity, so it has been discussed whether there is a differential pattern between children with normal weight and obesity. Aim. Describe the relationship between RAGE, its isoforms, ligands, biological functions, and comorbidities related to childhood obesity. To determine if decreased sRAGE levels represent a biomarker of childhood obesity based on the results of clinical, observational, and cross-sectional studies. Methodology. Descriptive review of studies published in the period from 2016 to 2022 in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases using the terms "AGEs", "RAGE", "sRAGE", "childhood obesity". Results and conclusion. A total of 141 articles related to the keywords were consulted. The elimination criteria consisted of references published before 2015, except for classic references. 63 articles from 2016 to 2022 were reviewed, six represent cross-sectional studies on sRAGE levels in the pediatric population, finding differences in the expression of RAGE according to nutritional status. ADVANCED glycation end-products , *RECEPTOR for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) , *CHILDHOOD obesity , *MONONUCLEAR leukocytes , *GENE expression , *TRANSMEMBRANE domains , *OVERWEIGHT children - Abstract
Introduction: advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) interact with the receptor for AGEs (RAGE). Full-length RAGE is associated with intracellular signal transduction, and soluble-RAGE (sRAGE) lacks the transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains, acting as a competitive inhibitor of AGEs-RAGE binding. sRAGE levels in healthy children are associated with cell surface expression of RAGE. However, the expression of RAGE has not been explored in childhood obesity. Objective: the study aim was to evaluate the sRAGE levels and the gene expression of RAGE in children and its association with cardiometabolic markers. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study with 6-11-year children, 20 with overweight and 20 with obesity. Anthropometric measurements included waist circumference (cm) (wC), neck circumference (NC), weight (kg), fat mass (%), trunk fat (kg), muscular mass (kg), height (cm), and body mass index (BMI) (kg/m²). Blood samples following an overnight fast were collected to measure glucose (mg/dl) and lipid profile with colorimetric methods. sRAGE was determined in serum using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Quantitative reverse transcription (RT-qPCR) was performed to analyze RAGE transcripts in peripheral blood mononuclear cells isolated by Ficoll®-Hypaque. Results: we found higher RAGE (p = 0.0315) and lower sRAGE (p = 0.0305) levels in the obesity group. sRAGE level showed a negative correlation with RAGE (r = -0.35) and BMI (r = -0.24), and positive with HDL-cholesterol (r = 0.29). Regression analysis suggests that HDL-C and RAGE levels are predictors of sRAGE levels. Conclusions: expression of RAGE is associated with lower sRAGE levels in childhood obesity. Moreover, obese children show higher cardiometabolic risk markers, and a positively associated with sRAGE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Childhood obesity is a serious global health problem that is continuously increasing worldwide. Many studies suggest that socioeconomic factors are related to the development of obesity. The objective of our study was to analyse the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Aragón, calculated applying the World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards, and to study its association with socioeconomic factors. Material and methods: We collected data for the entire paediatric population of Aragón aged 2–14 years. We classified each child as normal weight, overweight or obese based on the body mass index. We calculated prevalences by province and basic health care zone. To analyse differences in relation to social inequalities, we used the Aragón deprivation index as an indicator of socioeconomic status. Results: The final sample consisted of 161 335 children aged 2–14 years, 51% male and 49% female. The overall prevalence of excess weight was 31.1% (17.7% overweight and 13.3% obesity) and was significantly higher in boys. We found a high frequency of under-recording in health records (65%). There was a direct association between the deprivation index and the prevalence of obesity and overweight throughout Aragón, with a significant strong correlation in urban areas, where socioeconomic factors explained up to 66.4% of obesity and 48.9% of body weight excess. Conclusions: In Aragón, the prevalence of obesity and excess weight is high and associated with low family socioeconomic status.

Background: Being overweight affects millions of infants and preschoolers in the world, affecting their quality and life expectancy. Exposure to day care centers may play an important role in preventing unhealthy weight (UW). Objective: To point out the prevalence and association of day care exposure and other factors associated with UW in infants and preschoolers. Material and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out. Infant population aged 6-47 months without comorbidities that compromised their nutritional status were included, and those with formal childcare different from the selected day care were excluded. Exposure to day care, and other factors (perinatal, physical activity, nutritional, and familiar) were evaluated. A z score > 1 SD was considered UW. Prevalence, odds ratios (OR), 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) and adjusted RM by low birth weight, initiation of complementary feeding, consumption of sugary drinks, daytime naps, maternal nutritional status, and family income quintile through logistic regression. Results: The overall prevalence of UW was 17.84% (95%CI: 14.93-21.16), 11.84 (95%CI: 8.54-16.14) for children exposed to day care, and 23.78% (95%CI: 19.21-29.02) in unexposed infant population, showing significant differences between both prevalences (p < 0.001). The adjusted OR for UW presentation was 0.39 (95% CI: 0.23-0.66). Conclusions: Exposure to IMSS day care has shown to be a possible protective environment against the development of a UW. In 2018, 50.9% of all Chilean children, measured by the "Nutritional Map" of the Ministry of Education, were categorized as overweight or obese, which is evidence of rising obesity rates in Latin America. Discussions on the subject revolve around the tension between agency-determining factors, such as eating and exercise habits, and structural ones, pointing to the correlations between high levels of obesity and poverty. However, there is also a territorial dimension that stands out, especially in cases with high levels of residential segregation, as is the case in many Latin American cities. Here there are potential clusters of more or less obesogenic food environments, where the socioeconomic level, the nutritional status of the sector, and the food supply of the place are correlated. In this article, the spatial dimensions of childhood obesity are mapped, arguing that the segregation of nutritional status overlaps with the nature of multidimensional inequalities in Chilean cities. The study was done by organizing and combining public databases and spatial analysis techniques to create diagnostic maps. The results show a trend towards higher obesity rates as the socioeconomic level of the neighborhood decreases, while food environments vary according to the availability of different combinations of supply (street markets, quantity and size of supermarkets, traditional channels) for each socioeconomic level, suggesting the presence of different types of food environments. The paper concludes with reflections on how the nutritional context has changed since the Covid-19 pandemic and opens a discussion on the role of urban planning in creating nutritional (in)equity conditions.

- Abstract
In Mexico, 1 out of 3 schoolchildren aged 5 to 11 years is overweight or obese, which represents one of the main public health concerns, due to the fact that this condition in the child population is highly associated with the development of metabolic complications in adults. To date, dietary and physical activity interventions to prevent this problem have shown modest results worldwide. Biomedical studies in Mexico have shown that the pathophysiology of childhood overweight and obesity presents different molecular patterns, inflammation and oxidative stress, possibly associated with specific variants in the genome. However, the challenge is to achieve a secure characterization of this evidence so that it can be used in intervention studies aimed to improve the ability to predict and treat childhood overweight and obesity in Mexico. The biomedical challenge is to make knowledge a prevention strategy in families, in society and in the country, in order to fight the serious problem of obesity and its consequences.

Using multimedia strategies to decrease obesity and eating disorders in prevention programs for children is a promising approach that has shown good results. The current challenge for their dissemination is implementing and evaluating these programs to ensure their validity in different countries. Recently, a group of researchers from Spain developed and evaluated an "intelligent e-therapy system" (ETIOBE). The program involves learning through a multimedia training system on nutritional habits, physical activity and lifestyles. Objective. The present study aims to validate the psycho-educational component results of the ETIOBE system in Mexican population. Method. A sample of 149 children from Mexico City participated in a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design study. Results. The results show significant improvement in the mean scores of nutritional knowledge about foods. Discussion. The results of this study indicate effective changes in health knowledge and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHILDHOOD obesity , *COMMUNITY schools , *SCHOOL children , *LOGISTIC regression analysis , *OBESITY , *ELEMENTARY schools , *AGE groups , *SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC factors - Abstract
Introduction: between 2006 and 2020, obesity in Mexico increased across all age groups and displayed a homogenizing evolutionary trend throughout, prevalence overweigth and obesity (Ow+Ob) has 38.2% in school age children. Objectives: to analyze the changes of Ow+Ob in a cohort with four years of evolution of students from Mexico elementary schools and to evaluate its association with socio-demographic factors. Methods: information comes from a nutritional surveillance system of 52,545 elementary schools, with weight and height measurements from 2,008,474 children from six to eleven years old. A follow-on panel longitudinal analysis was performed from 2015 to 2019 in a dynamic cohort with three measurements. Ow+Ob prevalences were obtained; through a logistic regression with random effects, odds ratios (OR) were calculated, adjusting by sociodemographic characteristics (p < 0.05). Results: between 2015 and 2019, positive OR were observed for Ow+Ob development in 2017-2018 (OR = 1.02) and 2018-2019 (OR = 1.06). Students from the northern and southern regions of the country showed a greater probability of suffering Ow+Ob (OR = 1.58 and 1.64) when compared with the center. Attending to community or indigenous schools was a protective factor (OR = 0.54) whereas attending to a private school increased the risk (OR = 1.75). Adjusted Ow+Ob prevalences showed an accelerated increasing trend in males through all the periods. Conclusions: in Mexico, obesity in school children is a growing problem related to sociodemographic factors, therefore, urgent actions are needed for its restraining. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Understanding the underlying factors that influence the approach to overweight and obesity in children is basic to best support families searching a solution to this important public health problem. Objective: To assess attitudes and feelings of paediatric staff in addressing overweight and childhood obesity to parents, exploring perceived barriers and facilitators, for an effective care. Participants and method: Qualitative study by means of individual semi-structured questionnaires of paediatric staff (paediatricians and paediatrician nurses; n = 57; 68% female) of primary health care centres and hospitals in Mallorca. Thematic analysis was done. Results: Three themes emerged from the data: “Parents’ attitude in childhood obesity” (sub-themes “The conscience of parents”, “The parents ask for help”), “Paediatric staff and childhood obesity” (sub-themes “Approaching to the problem: The interview with parents”, “Looking together for the solution”), and “System barriers” (sub-themes “Improving teamwork and health policy”, “Family participation in addressing childhood obesity”). Conclusions: Paediatric staffs know how to treat childhood obesity, but demand training on motivation. Effectivity on therapy of childhood obesity will be obtained after parents/carers recognize the problem and establish a trustful relationship with paediatric staff. The health system is still a barrier to the activity of paediatric personnel.

Introduction: Sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS) and childhood obesity are two high prevalence conditions that represent a public health challenge. Objective: To analyse the association between both and comparing child groups that had or did not have both conditions. Patients and methods: A prospective study in children (3–14 years), referred to the “Multidisciplinary Sleep Unit” due to suspected SAHS, between 1 November 2015 and 1 August 2017. The following parameters were evaluated: anthropometry, symptoms, blood pressure, ear, nose, and throat examination, polysomnography (nocturnal PSG) and laboratory tests. Results: A total of 67 children were evaluated (64% non-obese (NOb) and 36% obese (Ob). It was observed that the Ob were older (P
