There is an absence in the literature on sports of a conceptualization of what in French are labeled sports de glisse: sports that imply gliding on water, through air, and on snow and ice, such as surfing, paragliding, skiing, and skating. Inspired by Ingold's (1993) concept of the taskscape, we introduce the idea of the glidescape: a perceptual field in which gliding sports practitioners inhabit, create, and transform their environment while at the same time being recreated and transformed themselves. Using an applied phenomenological approach, we describe the main experiential qualities and structure of the glidescape. In the quest for extended phases of effortless movement, gliders engage in a clearly accentuated rhythm with sharp contrasts between forceful effort and smooth effortlessness based on a fine-tuned proprioceptive sense for material and ecological resonance, which opens fleeting and emplaced moments of freedom and authenticity. Bleed-air control of ram-air parafoils is a lightweight and cost-effective mechanism that enables significant landing accuracy improvements compared to traditional trailing edge brake control due to the addition of direct glide slope control. Single-surface parafoil canopies have been shown to be lightweight and possess similar flight behavior as their ram-air counterparts. The design of bleed-air spoilers is more challenging for single-surface canopies, which lack the internal ram-air that provides a high pressure differential at any chordwise location. This paper explores bleed-air spoilers on single-surface parafoils with a focus on turn rate and glide slope control capabilities. Through a flight test campaign, it was shown that bleed-air spoilers on a single-surface parafoil provide both turn rate control from asymmetric vent opening and glide slope change from symmetric vent opening. Vents located far forward at the 10% chord location yield substantial control response with a maximum turn rate response of 38 deg/s and a maximum glide slope change of 58%. Vents located farther aft at 30, 50, and 70% chords demonstrated diminished control authority. Varying the spanwise locations of the spoilers revealed that the outermost vents had negligible lateral and longitudinal control authority. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hike&fly is a recent development in adventure tourism combining cross-country paragliding flights with hiking in remote destinations and is currently under-researched as a relatively new tourism phenomenon. As it highly intersects with media technologies such as the GoPro, the paper explores how this media technology can introduce new ways of studying mobile tourist practices from a more-than-representational perspective. By drawing on work in mobility and media studies, the paper argues that the GoPro does not simply record the subjective viewpoints of the users and their environment but also modifies how users encounter and make sense of destinations. Through challenging the former notion, the paper makes two contributions to tourism geographies: First, the paper provides background – based on preliminary fieldwork – on the recent development of hike&fly paragliding travels and the role of GoPro in the context of adventure tourism. Secondly, it contributes a methodological framework for further studies on tourist encounters with a "GoPro" by proposing a three-layered approach that considers the GoPro's ability to augment the human body, record a video trace, and generate somatic images. The purpose of this study was to use the Sports Policy Factors Leading to International Sporting Success (SPLISS 2.0) instrument and the nine pillars of elite sports success approach to survey and assess the success factors of coaching. Athletes from eight districts or cities in Central Java that had paragliding organizations, as well as chairs, secretaries, treasurers, and coaches were included in the survey. Data were analyzed through SPLISS 2.0 reports and quantitative analysis methods. Potential success factors were determined quantitatively using 96 CSFs assigned to a score of 0-1 based on nine pillars. Findings show that Banyumas, Grobogan, the Semarang district, and Karanganyar are the four regions offering the highest numbers of paragliding sports. The districts of Grobogan and Semarang are best in participation, talent identification, and talent development. The results show that many regions have yet to adopt the nine pillars. It is intended that each region would produce paragliding athletes of the highest caliber, honoring Central Java and Indonesia as a country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVES: In light of the growing popularity of paragliding, this cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of paragliding accidents, providing insights into the types and severity of injuries sustained as well as the body regions most commonly affected. METHODS: This cross-sectional retrospective study utilized data on adverse paragliding events on Mount Babadağ in Turkey, collected by the Muğla Sports Tourism Board (STB) between January 2020 and December 2021, with data sources including out-of-hospital STB forms and in-hospital electronic health records. RESULTS: Out of 241,420 paragliding flights, a total of 44 accidents were identified, with only three resulting in fatalities. Most of the accidents occurred during take off and landing, but the deadliest phase was during flight. The majority of accidents were of low severity, with a median National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics score of 1 (interquartile range [IQR] 1-3) and a median injury severity score of 1 (IQR 1-7.75). The lower limb was the most commonly injured body part, accounting for 55.8% of injuries, followed by the upper limb at 30.8%. CONCLUSIONS: Despite being considered an extreme sport, paragliding carries a relatively low risk of accidents and serious injuries, owing to advancements in training, equipment inspection, and protective gear. We designed and built a reduced-scale model experiment to study the paragliding inflation and launching phase at given traction force. We show that the launch trajectory of a single skin glider is universal, that is, independent of the exerted force. As a consequence, the length of the take-off run required for the glider to reach its "ready to launch" vertical position is also universal. We successfully compare our results to full-scale experiments and show that such universality can be understood through a simple theoretical model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the aerodynamic effects of the inflation of a paraglider wing (canopy) are investigated at the maximum chord Reynolds number of 330000. The aerodynamic forces and surface flow patterns were compared between the inflated and uninflated canopy models in a wide range of angles of attack. The stall angle and maximum lift coefficient of the inflated model are approximately 80 % and 38 % greater than those of the uninflated model. Before stall, dot- and line-shaped separation bubbles are formed on the inflated and uninflated models, respectively. The dot-shaped separation bubbles remain to a much higher angle of attack than the line-shaped one, with little change in the size and location. For the inflated model near stall, the flow is partially separated in the spanwise center, and the separation bubbles remaining are distorted. After stall, the canopy inflation has little effect on aerodynamic performance as the flow is fully separated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I (the first author) explore my qualitative research teaching for a cohort of Chinese students and their interactions in the classroom. These students reported experiencing feelings of paragliding from unsafe distrust to enjoyment through writings, drawings, questionings, feelings, reflections, and struggles. By graphic elicitation, I unfold a cartography of becoming a qualitative researcher and describe lines of becoming-events that entangle with rhizomatic relationships of self and language, self and other, and self and knowledge. The process of learning and teaching qualitative research involved multiple interactions, connections, reflections on the contingencies along the way, and searching for the meanings of life and research under the governance of audit culture. This paper contributes to qualitative research teaching and unpacks its impacts on learners, and it also calls for scholars, particularly those from China, to reassess the value of qualitative research in the academic field. Muğla is an international tourism destination in Turkey. Babadağ Mountain, located in Fethiye, is also one of the renowned paragliding destinations in the world. The objective of this study is to implement MDIM in Babadağ mountain paragliding destination. This model has already been empirically tested in Alpine mountain tourism destinations (Kuscer, 2013); a destination which is located out of Europe is tried to be focused in terms of MDIM. The rationale is to understand links among destination environment, innovativeness, and tourism development. The relations among these concepts might contribute to sustainable tourism development and create a competitive advantage. Data have been collected by gathering the opinion of paragliding pilots who work in Babadağ. Results related to MDIM were tested by using confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM).
